i needed it for class.......2006-03-21
I bought this book because I had to have it for school,
it is full of infromation on activities from history to the
future. it is a must have for anyone in the health care profession
More than the essentials.......2001-07-17
Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position.

Book Description
Written by the wife of a man with Asperger Syndrome (AS), this book will provide the answers to many of the questions asked by the increasing number of people in that situation. Ashley Stanford explains how behaviors that may have appeared odd - or even downright irritating - are the manifestation of AS, and shows how understanding can lead to change, or to greater tolerance. She provides a wealth of strategies for living successfully with characteristics that cannot be changed, pointing out that AS brings also enormous strengths to a relationship, and emphasizing the value of understanding. Including numerous quotes from people in long-term AS relationships, the book describes many positive solutions that have worked for other couples.

Great Asperger Marriage book.......2007-02-12
This book is outstanding. Anyone living with someone with Aspergers needs to read this book. I am sure this book will help to save many marriages.
Best AS Relationship book I've read.......2007-01-03
I read this book 4 years ago, when I was in a very desperate search for information to save my marriage. Ashley Sanford gave me a lot of hope, where other books on the subject offered little. This book made a big difference in my approach to issues in my relationship and I highly recommend it to anyone in a relationship with a partner on the spectrum.
The author is real sweet but she doesn't know much or wright it great!.......2006-11-15
With this book had a few pages I really liked but other then that as the author says at the end she wrote this mostly for herself (That's not so great) and it defiantly showed. The little she wrote I liked like the one page on sex and the disorder isn't found anywhere else but almost all the rest of the info is and is delivered elsewhere better. She states she was pretty ignorant before her limited research and I could tell prior to her statement of it and frankly now she may be more informed but she still has along way to go and some of her assumptions which she states as facts are also wrong. But, she is right that a book like hers is well needed and the fact she acted on that is great. The fact that she deals with someone like her husband as well as she does and her commitment to her kids with it and without are also admirable. But, couldn't someone tell her stuff like that 70-75% of the people with this also have ADD/ADDHd? Which IS a fact.Ask the leading guy on the topic who she admires so much Tony Attword. She needs to know the area better herself and needs to do better research on it especially with her job being what it is in life and as a mother with 3 kids and a husband with it.
Well written book.......2005-07-25
Well written book by one strong woman. What about a woman like that for me too? I have Aspergers. Ashley Stanford really lays out good arguments about why people with Aspergers can marry and not believe garbage that Aspies should be forced celibates. She said being told you shouldn't marry is like telling Rosa Parks to sit only in the back of the bus. Fact is Aspies just function differently than the normal person and the rules of marriage are altered. People with Aspergers just communicate differently. The best communication is on a phone, text messaging, or talking to your partner in the dark where body language is useless. Body language is the key to understanding the opposite sex, we Aspies just are worse than the average guy at understanding it. Should be required reading for psychiatrists and pyschologists who think Aspies should live lives of forced celibacy. Perhaps I bought the book because I had a female friend in high school named Ashley, and she was gorgeous, too.
Aspie (and all) marriages are works in progress.......2004-04-12
In this book a woman tells of the joys and struggles of living with a husband and children who have Asperger Syndrome. She also draws on the experiences of others who have had lived with "Aspie" partners. She honestly describes her own difficulties understanding and translating her husband's reactions into her own more emotionally demonstrative frame of reference.
I got the impression that she would have liked her husband to write more about his perspective on their relationship. He does give some information but he is not an "express your emotions" type of guy.
I have refered several people to this book. It is good for individuals who are learning to appreciate and deal with a family member with Aspergers. At the same time this book has something to say for any couple who despite vast differences, strive to understand each other and make a long term relationship work.

Excellent 1 of my 2 'must haves' for parents & professionals.......2003-04-26
I'd been a special education teacher before our son was born, then served for 15 years as a Developmental Disabilities Specialist (mental health DD case manager). Now I'm back with special education, and our son, who has multiple developmental disabilities himself, is doing wonderfully. I came across Nancie's book by chance when our son was 1 year old when an OT checked in Nancie's book in my presence. After seeing how valuable it was (it was used as a text book at PSU at the time) I determined I would not go home (two hours away) until I owned a copy! That was an excellent decision.
Even after 20 years, I still useNancie's book. I recommend her book to everyone who loves, lives with, or works with young people with ANY type of motor impairment. It has many useful applications. For instance, it describes ways to play, set up a room, cope, physical handling, toileting, eating, sleep, ways to make stuff inexpensively, enjoy, and it also describes typical development, grief, and growth. Her illustrations are simply and convey useful information in realistic situations. Nancie writes forthrightfully and constructively. Challenging, too, in a bracing manner. There is no wallowing in pity or mincing of words. Yet, in all of this, Nancie conveys positive acceptance, focuses on forward movement, and she somehow shares that disabilities, after all, are part of all that is normal. Then she sets about showing you how to teach, love, and care for a child.
If you want an informative, practical "how to," this is the book you want. I've always felt, as a parent, that this book is something like having a PT/OT/friend/teacher/mentor in my pocket. That is in spite of being a special educator, myself. Someone who supposedly knows what to do. Sorry, no one is prepared for everything that can happen. Nancie provides a holistic and realistic guide... one that speaks directly, constructively, and respectfully. She focuses on taking action and on results. As a professional, her book can be very useful when working with individuals, families and/or staff. For young people growing up with disabilities, it can offer good illustrations to show how to do things. The text, however, at least in my 20 year old copy, is written for adults, not children.
This book is one of two books I'd like every person to have who lives or works with people who have motor impairments, neurological disorders, or cognitive impairments, to have. Social workers, doctors, RNs, therapists, interventionists, students, teachers, and fellow parents, this is a tool I believe you will value, use, and enjoy. (My other "must have" is the classic "Your Child's Self Esteem" by Dorothy Corkille Briggs. It is good for any relationship as well as for interacting with anyone. It certainly is not "just" for use with children.)
My best wishes to all of you who are searching for help, information, and/or direction. This book will not let you down.
Okay, but....................2003-03-23
I read this book when my son was first diagnosed with CP 10 years ago. It contained a wealth of useful information but also contained information on how a "normal" baby/child would develop. I did not care for that portion of the book although I understand the authors reasoning in so doing. I also read the book Children with Cerebral Palsy -- I found it easier to read.

Helen Laverty, Health Lecturer, University of Nottingham

"innovative and bold... A wide range of ideas and opinions are introduced at a good pace, and the writing is elegant and engaging - sure to be attractive to a wide range of readers. ...Robert Orr...stimulated us to think in a new way about how some people with complex needs may or may not view the world...My Right to Play will be a valuable addition to the field -...to our thinking on multiple disability" Eye Contact
This lively and accessible book provides a take on life from the perspective of a child who has no sight and no speech and who uses a wheelchair because of physical disabilities.
The book:
- Offers a glimpse into the thoughts of such a child, recognizing that family and support workers sometimes get things right and sometimes don't
- Enables people new to disability work to avoid pitfalls and take short cuts in becoming interesting and useful to a child with complex needs
- Examines the puzzling behaviour often encountered when working with children who are dependent on others for the ordinary aspects of daily life
Compassionate, sympathetic and down to earth, My Right to Play is invaluable reading for a wide ranging audience including the families of profoundly disabled children, teachers, carers, therapists and medical staff.

A Basic Self-Contradiction.......2001-09-06
Israel and Tarver write that they respect the self-determination of transgendered people, yet they propose guidelines that leave decisions about transgendered people's bodies, ultimately, in the hands of mental health professionals. The authors do not address this basic self-contradiction. To their credit, the authors also include essays by other writers, some of whom contest this autonomy-denying aspect of their proposed guidelines.
Gives a most current (1997) view of human sexuality.......1998-12-08
The authors propose three elements of human sexuality: sex (male, female, or intersexed), gender identity (male, female, androgynous), and sexual orientation (attracted to male, attracted to females, attracted to transexuals, attracted to gay men, attracted to lesbian women, etc.).
I am writing this review from memory, so I am not certain I have the (types) correct. The key thing is that the authors argue that sexual orientation is not the same thing as gender identity.
Excellent overview, not for novices.......1998-04-07
A great overview of current care standards and practices. Also includes some personal narratives. Directed to professionals in the health and therapeutic fields, but clear and readable by non-professionals, including patients, family and friends. Probably more useful if reader already has some familiarity with the field.
