Book Description

After the firing squads of the Russian Revolution  murdered Czar Nicholas II, Czarina Alexandra, and almost every other member of the Romanov family, there appeared in a small coastal village of western France a grand duke and duchess who proclaimed themselves to be the new monarchs of Russia.

The grand duchess was Victoria Melita, nicknamed Ducky. To begin with, she was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria as well as of Czar Alexander of Russia. Her sister was the remarkable Queen Marie of Romania, and her intricate family connections with the rulers of the world were almost unprecedented. The first cousin not only of King George V but also of Kaiser Wilhelm and Czar Nicholas, she had previously been married to Ernst Ludwig, grand duke of Hesse and the Rhine, but this relationship was destroyed by dark secrets, a betrayal that filled her with bitterness and shame.

Then, in a scandal that shocked the royal world, she married Kirill, a cousin of the late czar of Russia. She had married and divorced one of her first cousins and then married another--her father's nephew, and then her mother's nephew.

The family opposition was so great that Victoria Melita and Kirill were stripped of their wealth and their titles before being banished from Russia. When they were finally allowed to return, they tried in vain to bring democratic reforms to the dying, autocratic monarchy in a desperate effort to save it.

Trapped, inevitably, by the revolution, they managed to make an incredible and perilous escape, which led to a long life in exile abroad as pretenders to the throne.

Victoria Melita had never aspired to play the role of an empress without a throne. The shadowy life of a royal pretender was the last thing this strong and independent woman had ever wanted. However, her passionate nature had centered itself totally upon her adored second husband, and, now, as Kirill set up his imperial court in the French fishing village of St. Briac and assumed the title of emperor of Russia, Victoria Melita became his empress and for twelve years proudly worked by her husband's side for the restoration of the monarchy.

And then, unexpectedly and brutally, her world collapsed again, and her inability to compromise almost brought her to ruin.

A Fatal Passion is the story of great wealth and privilege when rival royal families vied for position and power even as they were about to lose almost everything in the First World War. Among the few who survived the painful times was Victoria Melita, one of the most beautiful and liberated women of her era.

The book is set against the majestic canvas of Queen Victoria's far-flung empire, the intrigues of the royal courts of Europe, and the exotic splendor and fantastic events of imperial Russia as it balanced on the precipice of disaster. It culminates in the turbulent era of ruthless dictators and the advent of the Second World War.

Through the use of private diaries and letters previously unpublished, as well as exclusive interviews with many of the surviving principals, Michael John Sullivan has revealed the heart and mind of a remarkable woman, who, for too long, has been largely overlooked by history.

3 out of 5 stars You'll either love it or hate it.......2004-11-05

This is not a terrible biography, but I have to agree with the reviewer who said the author is way too enamored of his subject to be objective. He's not the best writer in the world, and he does his subject no service by romanticizing; being melodramatic (that title!), and/or speculating about her life and the people who surround her...It's difficult to write about someone who ordered her personal papers destroyed, which must be why Mr. Sullivan indulges in speculation at times. I preferred John Van der Kiste's "Princess Victoria Melita" as the better biography of this granddaughter of Queen Victoria; it's a far more balanced biography than Mr. Sullivan's.

1 out of 5 stars A Fatal Passion is a fatal flop..........2002-10-20

I have at least 100 different books about the Romanovs in my personal library, and I have to say that this is the bottom of the barrel. The writing is trite, the research is flawed, and there are so many inaccuracies that I question this book being called non-fiction. There were so many things Sullivan could have developed in greater depth--especially the relationship between Victoria and her sister. Of course, Ducky was such a shallow individual that I imagine it must have been difficult to write a biography about her. Past reviewers seemed to either love or hate this book. I suspect that the raves came from Sullivan's friends. Any historian familiar with Romanov history will identify this book for what it is--a very flawed attempt to make a minor character in Russian/German/English history into a major one.

1 out of 5 stars Royal Pain.......2002-07-23

This is the biggest lot of historical nonsense. Sullivan has an
irritating style and a gushing attitude towards his subject
(either he's related to Ducky or madly in love with her). He
cannot get over how impossibly wonderful, gorgeous, perfect, etc
he thinks she was. This is a totally inappropriate stance for a
historian towards a subject. He also trashes everyone Ducky knew
to make her look better. Sullivan's treatment of the murdered
Empress Alexandra is particularly cruel and unnecessary. Bottom
line: Ducky was an overrated, frumpy, greedy historical footnote.
Cyril wanted to be Emperor, so why didn't he start by executing
traitors like himself and his wife? Their behavior was inexcusable, even during a revolution. This book is inexcusable
as a history or as a biography. Don't waste your time or money.

5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Historical Biography.......2000-12-07

This was an immensely enjoyable and fascinating book from beginning to end. The author certainly did a superlative job in gathering and presenting the facts and placing them in a very skillful and compelling narrative. So often history comes across as dull and lifeless, but not here. Sullivan has a rare talent for dramatic construction and detail which ignites the story and makes it fascinating to follow. I really enjoyed his character descriptions and the clever way he created the time and place and unique sensibility of a long-passed era. I find many of the critiques here rather difficult to comprehend. Maybe some readers had been misled or misinformed as to what type of book they would be reading. For some of the more vicious reviews, I can only assume these readers would be more at home in a ultra-hip and downbeat modern subject matter. Certainly Victoria Melita was no beauty by our current standards, but the author fully explains this and only references her in the then estimations and standards of her own era. These rather mean-spirited and extremely carping criticisms aside, I think anyone who wants to read a wonderfully written historical biography will fully appreciate this book and not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An Extremely Well- Written Book.......2000-08-29

I really don't know where to begin. I read this book a year ago and am reviewing it now only in response to the extraordinarily absurd and unfair customer reviews that I recently read here. I am 36, a Phd in English Lit and teach at a local college. By any reasonable and fair criteria of review, this book is exceptionally well-written. The author Sullivan has a wonderful way of using words and an unusual gift for weaving a narrative that is both dynamic and engaging. His style equally entertains and informs. Although I am not a historian, I can appreciate his extensive and thorough research. Of course the book has flaws - but they are relatively minor ones, and certainly not the awful errors that the incredibly shallow and mean-spirited critics on this page seem so convulsed. How curious to me that this excellent biography has seemed such a lightning rod for these acutely negative people. In an age where criticism is 100% personal and subjective, it is a true study in psychology when these highly prejudiced and obviously bitter people gleefully attack a work such as this with their sharpened stilettos. Imagine someone writing a review and basing an entire negative attack on the opinion that the book's subject is not beautiful in their own estimation. Obviously Victoria Melita is no beauty for today's standards, but Sullivan bases his estimation on numerous quotes which show her as a beauty by the standards of a different world a century ago. Why anyone should have trouble accepting this fact of changing fashion and taste and cruelly dismiss the book because of it - I simply don't understand this mind-set. I think the fact that Sullivan is a young, handsome male who comes off as privileged, if not aristocratic himself, has antagonized many readers (liberals, men-hating feminists, ect) and made them resentful and jealous. There can seemingly be little other excuse for these hostile and unfair critiques. Any open-minded, intelligent reader without some extreme agenda would find this book to be what it is - not the greatest biography ever written, but certainly a fascinating, entertaining and extremely well-written historical work - one which is more than worthy of a long and careful read.

5 out of 5 stars Divine chocolate desserts.......2007-01-29

This is an excellent book. I particularly like it as it has photos of every dessert so you can be inspired by the photos and at least you can see what the finished product looks like. The desserts are a little time consuming but you can probably tackle them over a couple of days. I have made a few of the desserts and I can only rave about them.

5 out of 5 stars The best collection in a single book!.......2006-05-28

I've bought this book probably less than a year ago but I already tried several recipes. I have quite a few books for chocolate cakes recipes, but this is the best for sure. And mainly due to this book, my chocolate cakes have been improving a lot. They take time and are relatively expensive but it worth, especially when you see how people enjoy each bite.
Every party with friends it's always a surprise for them, since I try as many new recipes as I can.
Thanks Mr. Desaulnier for sharing such a great talent!

5 out of 5 stars This is a keeper!.......2006-03-04

I have had this book for ten years. I have yet to see any chocolate-guised cookbook that compares.

I have not dared to make most of the delights in this book (how DOES he stay so skinny?) but have made many. Not being a trained chef of any sort, the instructions are clear, professional and consise. The hardest parts of creating these confections are not getting the book dirty, and deciding which one to make next.

While some reviews have talked about some recipes being "complicated," only the excitement of finally tasting them should be intimidating. It is very rewarding to treat yourself to these deserts after the labor of making them, knowing they are the same things you could enjoy in the world's finest resturants.

Chocolate is center on stage in all these recipies, and this book has increased my reverence for it 100-fold. (And also spoiled me away from sub-par chocolate deserts.)

4 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2005-10-03

This book is beautiful to look at in addition to having incredible recipes. Some of them are a bit complicated, but for the most part, worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars What a way to go!.......2005-07-25

Death by Chocolate is the book of books if you are serious about your chocolate. This book is sublime in its luscious photos...one can almost taste them! Where Desaulniers shines most is in his pragmatic, practical approach to cooking with chocolate is that he uses ingredients and supplies the normal, average Joe can get his hands on...nothing exotic or too difficult.

There is a recipe for every taste and culinary skill-level. Some are challenging, some are average, some are just fun. Whoever would have thought of chocolate popcorn!

If you want to treat or impress anyone, the recipes in this book will do it. Every recipe I've made are met with rave reviews...quickly followed by "can I have the recipe."

Desaulniers' tips, teaching, and advice are a great addition. They are valuable and comforting especially when first attempting to create a delicious chocolate concoction. I have not been disappointed in one recipe I've tried...and, they've all worked. His instructions are easy, clear, and right on.

My only critique is that he includes recipes for white chocolate...pu! As a purist (and owing to the fact white chocolate contains no chocolate), these should be put in the trash or another appropriate receptacle.

If you are or know a serious chocolate hound, this is a great book to give as a gift. I've purchased both editions. Finally, if you only have one cookbook on chocolate this one is it, hands down.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-09-16

Jayne Ann Krentz has done it again with this delightful, charming book. As always, the characters in this book are stunning! They are very dynamic and true-to-life and they are people you'd want to know. Cleo is a down-to-Earth woman with an underlying sensuality that she is desperate to bring forth. Max is successful in everything he tries, everything that is, except relationships. He is searching for a place he fits in. He finds that place in a remote inn known as the Robbins' Nest Inn. Robbins' Nest is peopled with a group of characters who call themselves 'the family' and are funny, warm and complex. These delightful denizens are headed up by the Inn owner, Cleo Robbins.

Here, among these people, Max finds the love and acceptance he has been searching for all his life. Cleo and 'the family' take him in and add him to the bunch almost instantly. With their help he learns that being part of a family isn't about when you mess up, it's about being there. Watching Max break out of his shell and flourish under Cleo's love and the love of 'the family' is heartwarming.

There is a mystery that plays throughout the book and unlike usual, I had half of it figured out almost instantly. The other part of the mystery, nevertheless, kept me guessing until the end.

However, the mystery is not the driving force of this book as is most times the case. The tone of this story is definitely self-discovery. Watching Cleo and Max discover each other and learn things about themselves is wonderful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The humor, the passion, and the love were touching and kept me interested right from the first. One of the best by Ms. Krentz in any of her many incarnations. I am always pleasantly surprised by the high quality and wonderful characters in Ms. Krentz's books. Buy this book now -- you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Love, Family, and a Sense of Belonging.......2004-05-19

Cynical and uptight, Max Fortune, head of the giant Curzon Hotel chain, arrives at the quaint Robbins' Nest Inn. Max is searching for five priceless paintings bequeathed to him by his mentor, Jason Curzon. The inn is where Jason had directed him to seek out the works of art. What he discovers during his stay is his attraction to the inn's owner, Cleopatra Robbins, and the importance of belonging to a family. Cleo lovingly refers to her staff members as "the family", and they do support each other as such. Max, who has no family, has spent his life working for money and power in an effort to fit in somewhere. As Max searches for the paintings, his relationship with Cleo intensifies, and he begins to realize his mentor intended for him to find another type of treasure at this little inn. But he feels Cleo is hiding something from him, plus it appears someone wants her out of the way permanently.

This was, for the most part, a satisfying reading experience. It contained many of the elements of a great story, such as romance, intrigue, depth of feeling, well-developed characters, and sexual tension. The main and secondary characters were all likeable, and it was a nice touch that the hero wasn't physically perfect, since he walked with the aid of a cane. The mystery was well done, because while I had figured out part of it, I wasn't able to figure out all of it for quite some time. Probably my only complaint would be, I would've liked more description of the love scenes. They had real possibility, but fell short after all that buildup to get there. Not a book I feel compelled to read again, but enjoyable all the same.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2002-07-29

I had this book laying around for 2 years before I decided to actually begin reading it. It just didn't seem like my type of book, but when I started reading it, I couldnt stop. Cleo's character is very lovable. I had just gotten done reading a JAK book before this one that was not very good, so I was hoping to come across a novel by her that I would enjoy. Well, I've found it! This book is packed with love, humor, suspense, and anything else that makes up a good novel. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

    3 out of 5 stars Passion????.......2002-04-30

Where exactly was the grand passion between Cleo and Max? There was no building up of passion, no sexual tension, no clandestine desires. Events evolved very quickly. Both Cleo and Max had no depth, no mystery. Even when Cleo lost her virginity to Cleo, it was presented in such a nonchalant manner.

    Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A Romance That Is Both Sweet And Sexy!.......2005-06-21

Ms. Winston (aka Jennifer Macaire) has written a romance that is both sexy as well as sweet. She has taken the concept of American living abroad an taken the various cultural as well as social situations one encounters and created a wonderful story that fans of romance will scoop up readily.

Casey Hatter is living in Italy going to art school and trying to get on with life after the death of her young husband. One phone call later from a friend in need sends Casey, with notebook in hand, in order to interview Italy's premier "football" player Alessandro Sottini. What she knows about football could fill the head of a pin but she goes anyhow. From the first meeting these two spark something off of each other but Casey wants a quiet life. Alessandro is a star and his fans are many...and vocal. Will these two different people be able to save a romance that they both need but never thought they would find?

Alessandro is a quiet hero and perfect for the emotionally shy Casey. As a result their romance is wonderfully romantic and sweet. Ms. Winston has taken time to flesh out her characters and get the most out of them in the time that she gave them. Fear not, the reader will not feel cheated in anyway! Being a displaced American it was fun to read a romance with the same theme. Alessandro is perfectly european in his actions and feelings. As a result I was fully able to relate to him as well as understand the issues that Casey faced!

Bottom line, this is a great romance that I really think you should take the time to get a hold of. Needless to say I'm going to look for Ms. Winston's backlist as she has proven to catch my interest.

4 out of 5 stars A new author to glom! Sexy and sweet!.......2004-09-05

I first discovered this author when I was checking out the new ebook publisher loose-id.com and read the excerpt for her latest ICE MAN (which I wound up buying and which was terrific BTW) and it got me digging up other stories she's written. I found A GRAND PASSION in paperback here at Amazon and snapped it up. I really enjoyed this story!

Casey Hatter is a widow of two years who has moved to Italy (Turin) to study art and to start her life anew. She cherishes her husband's memory and meeting a man is the last thing on her mind, but when her former boss, editor of a women's magazine, asks a favour she is hard-pressed to refuse. The favour is to interview an Italian soccer star for a profile on international athletes. Though she knows nothing about soccer and has never even seen a game, she agrees. But when she meets Alessandro Sottini unexpected sparks fly (he's got gorgeous raven curls and mesmerizing amber eyes) and she finds herself agreeing to have dinner with him. Little does she know what's in store for her as she has no idea how famous and popular he is in Turin!

Alessandro is immediately attracted to the blond-haired brown-eyed out-of-a-Botticelli-painting Casey. In complete contrast to the various actresses and models his publicist usually sets him up with she's genuine and sweet and just plain nice. A woman he wants to get to know and spend time with. But it's easier said than done when Alessandro can barely go out in public without being mobbed by his fans and the papparazzi. While he loves his fame and the lifestyle it affords him it's also lonely, isolating and at times superficial. All of which makes Casey even more desirable and he is determined to have her in his life. But Casey is not comfortable with life in a fishbowl or with the reaction of his fans to their relationship and when her former in-laws visit, even more complications arise. But you'll root for this terrific couple to overcome all of there obstacles and have the happily ever after they deserve!

My only issue with the story was with Alessandro's passive attitude toward the actions of his fans and the press, but I guess there really is only so much one can do in that situation. Anyway, I loved it and recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars A truly splendid passion --.......2005-11-25

A grand passion is not necessarily a fun thing to live with. Or through. Oh, to be sure, there are occasional moments of pure bliss, but on the whole-it so confuses your mind that you end up doing unbelievable things you'd never thought of doing while totally ignoring the very basics of life that you should be doing. But then, you see the object of your obsession, and away you go-there's no immediate relief.

This wonderful double volume of two more classics from the marvelous Elizabeth Mansfield (sadly no longer with us) tells of not one-but two-such grand passions; one in each of the two stories.

The first of these-A Splendid Indiscretion-demonstrates just how well opposites attract. When the very organized Ivor Griffith, Viscount Mullineaux, first tangles with the hopelessly muddle-headed Ada Surringham, she inadvertently saves him from a supreme disaster. Having been followed to a roadside inn on the way to Wales by a wandering wife (not his own) and then by the lady's husband, Ivor flees the ensuing scene, right into Ada's room. Ivor and Ada know that he left the room immediately after the confrontation with the suspicious husband, but had no way of knowing that they would soon be residing under the same roof-in London.

The farcical un-masking that takes place in chapter nineteen could not be improved upon-for sheer joie d'vivre, good humor and vivid astonishment. Ms. Mansfield, consummate writer that she is, never puts a foot wrong while thoroughly engaging the reader's interest and juggling several plot lines all at once.

Fortunately, Ivor realizes that Ada is essential to his well-being, but it does take a while. Enjoy!

The Grand Passion tells an entirely different tale of mistaken identity, revenge and, yes-passion. It's an excellent explanation of just how muddle-headed a seemingly sensible and intelligent person can become while in the throes of such an emotion.

Tess Brownlow thinks she should know a grand passion when she encounters one, and so she chooses to marry her neighbor and friend Jeremy Beringer. It is his grand passion for her that puts her in this position, even though she cannot return his love in the same way. When a coaching accident takes the life of Jeremy even while he's on his way to the wedding, Tess feels such remorse she determines to avenge him.

But first she has to discover the person responsible for the accident, and after a search, learns of one name-Lotherwood. With the aid of a cousin, Tess heads for London to achieve her goal. Even when she learns that he is betrothed, still she sets her plan in motion. When he is sufficiently in love with her, she'll leave him, desolate. Indeed Matt is desolate, but so is she, as she's fallen into her own trap. And then she discovers, quite by accident, that she's sprung her trap on the wrong man.

It takes time, but finally, Tess and Matt find each other and are happily united in their Grand Passion.

This is an extraordinary pairing of two classics-unhappily for us, we'll not see their like again anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars great (re)reads for the price of one.......2005-07-27

I'm rather glad that Signet is reprinting some of the earlier works of a few of the more noteworthy Regency-era romance writers. And that they're actually issuing them in form of two-for-one packages, is just the icing on top of the cake. This time around, Signet has reissued "A Splendid Indiscretion" (one of my favourite Regencies) & "The Grand Passion."

In "A Splendid Indiscretion," pretty and good hearted Ada Suurringham is everything that a doting uncle could wish for in a niece -- if only she didn't have this propensity to be constantly woolgathering, and for forever falling into one muddle or the other because of her daydreaming. Always the foil for her more beautiful and self-abosrbed cousin, Cordelia, Ada had thought that she had gotten rather used to remaining in the background and being the subject of a lot of eye rolling. But when Ada's godmother, Viscountess Millineaux, issues an invitation for either Ada or Cordelia, to visit her and be launched into London Society, Ada's uncle is determined that Ada should be the one to go. What follows is a wonderfully humorous romp as Ada stoically makes for London, only to end up working in her godmother's house as a librarian's assistant instead of staying on as an hounoured guest. But that would be nothing if it were not for the fact that Ada has managed to fall in love with her godmother's son, the sophisticated and urbane, Ivor. Is it too much to hope that Ivor would look past her muddle-headedness and fall in love with her instead of the prefect Cornelia? (5 stars)

In "The Grand Passion," Tess Brownlow has decided to marry her childhood playmate, Jeremy Beringer, even though she's not passionately in love with him. But when Jeremy dies in a coaching accident, all Tess can do thirst to avenge his death. And when she discovers the identity of the "gentleman" who so thoughtlessly caused Jeremy's death, she meticulously sets out to make the man pay. What Tess never counted on, however, was how Matthew Lotherwood, the Marquis of Bradbourne would awaken in her the passionate feelings that Jeremy never did. Should Tess go on with her plan of revenge, or embrace this chance to have a grand passion... (4 1/2 stars)

I feel in love with "A Splendid Indiscretion" the first time I read it, and even now, almost 20 years later, it is still one of my favourite novels and still brings a smile to my face. It is one of those charming and well written humourous tales that one can read and reread over the years without fearing that it will become stale or boring. On the other hand, my feelings about "The Grand Passion" have changed quite dramatically over the years. I didn't really like it all that much the first time I read it, and stayed away from rereading it over the years. But when I reread it a few days ago, I must say that I changed my outlook quite a bit. It is a very well written novel, and the manner in which Elizabeth Mansfield handles the whole thorny issue of revenge is one of the best I've ever read. I'm still not all that enamoured with the book, but I will note that it is, like "A Splendid Indiscretion" and a host of other Mansfield gems, a very well written and highly polished novel. The only reservation I have with "The Grand Passion" is that I still don't buy Matthew Lotherwood's sudden capitulation at the end of the novel. It just felt too rushed. He goes from cold fury, disillusionment and pain at how Tess has schemed to hurt him to completely giving in and forgiving her after just one impassioned speech from her. And while I know that Matthew would have forgiven her eventually and acknowledged that he still did love the totally single-minded, passionate and high-handed Tess, I didn't think that Mansfield made a good enough case for why it happened so very quickly one page from the end of the novel. On the whole, though, both these books are gems. And if you've found lately that the more recently published Regency-era romances have not quite come up to par, and that they lack the polish, wit and effervesce that one expects from a Regency, I'd recommend you check out some of these wonderful reprints.

    5 out of 5 stars 4-1/2* - Double the Entertainment! .......2005-07-09

Both stories in this reprint are an exemplary example of what one should expect to
find from one of the best Regency-era romance novelists of our time. If you are even thinking of reading regency A SPLENDID INDISCRETION, should be on the top of your list to truly give you an enchanting taste of this marvelous genre. Ada Surringham is surely one of the most muddleheaded females you might ever discover who is sure to give absent-mindedness a new meaning. If she weren't so innocently charming in her day-dreaming and forgetfulness one would truly want to wring her neck. For Ivor Griffith, Viscount Mullineaux, the last thing this well set up Corinthian needed was a bubbleheaded wife, yet, with Ada, and her ethereal presence - she was a vision that he was sure he always to find, in his life, and in his bed. Presented with a marvelous set of secondary characters, along with the very engaging lead couple the reader should totally enjoy this offering. - In this first story of this double volume, you will find a smile on your face from beginning to end in this totally delightful and fun read. Overall Rating - 5

The second story in this volume, THE GRAND PASSION while still showcasing the superb writing and feelings of regency era, will give the reader another emotional high, but rather than sweet, I found it to be rather a sadder tone dealing more with the complexities of human emotion than the lighter versions one generally associates with a traditional regency.

After several proposals Tess Brownlow finally accepted the suit of her childhood best friend who had always loved her. Jeremy Beringer might not have been what she anticipated as her `grand passion' but she'd always cared and loved him so that when she was delivered the heartbreaking news on the morning of her wedding day, that Jeremy had been tragically killed as a result of a coaching accident, she was devastated. Later when she found that the driver had been replaced by a drunken `sportsmen' of the famous Four-In-Hand club - Tess vowed revenge. Fortunately, Tess's scheme for retribution would work very well, unfortunately, Tess would discover that revenge was not at all sweet. - While finding this an extremely clever plot, I often felt very sad reading it as a vengeance theme is not uplifting, but when the writing is as polished as Mansfield presents in this regency realm, you still have to love it! In spite of Tess' intent to exact retribution on Matthew Lotherwood, they were totally engaging together and both extremely likable as they managed to seek forgiveness in one another. Couple this with engaging secondary characters and you are in for a rare double-dipped treat! Overall Rating - 4

EVEN OUTRIGHT REJECTION WOULDN'T STOP HER FROM PURSUING HER GRAND PASSION. . . .

No man in London could match Lord Kendal's cool elegance nor rival his skills as a diplomat. His icy calm was as notorious as his untouchable heart. And few women had any illusions of finding love in his arms. Lady Celia Greer, however, was not among them.

Young and very determined, she has made it her mission to melt the ice around his lordship's heart. Though charmed by the exuberant young widow, he is not willing to toy with one still innocent in the ways of love. But if ever there was a gentleman worth saving from his own cold prison, it was Kendal. And if ever there was a woman for the job . . . 'twas she!

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!!! .......2005-04-02

I expected a pleasant tale but was not ready for the maelstrom of emotions this book contained. Every character was so well introduced and fleshed out! You were allowed to form opinions and then have them dashed as you found out each person's background.

My slight relating of the story will not do it justice -- Lady Celia Greer, widowed and wealthy has arrived in London to take in the season. On her first day, she sees a man (Lord Kendal) who has dominated her dreams - they have never formally met. She had seen Lord Kendal (James) leaving a church many years before on his wedding day, beautiful beloved bride on his arm. Chance has thrown them together again. He is now a widower, and being an experienced diplomat, he possesses the ability to both charm, yet distance himself from everyone. Thinking to have a quick, meaningless affair with the beautiful Celia - James finds himself faced with much more than his icy heart can deal with. Their unorthodox first meeting and subsequent encounters and conversations are amongst the best I have ever read. Will Lord Kendal be Celia's "Grand Passion?"

The romance will take you from London to the Lake District where you become better acquainted with Lord Kendal's son Charley and James's brother Kit. Along the way you will learn of Celia's disappointing marriage and Lord Kendall's disastrous union also. Some diplomatic adventures are introduced as you meet a Russian general and famous poet. You will also be reacquainted with deep love, for family, for friends and for life itself. I was truly moved.

This is Regency Romance at its very best. Do not miss reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Boy, is this good. A terrific Regency by a great author........1999-09-03

I loved this book-- the impulsive, idealistic heroine, the dashing hero, and the sweetest kid... I just felt like I knew the characters and suffered with them. And I loved the connection to the great romantic poets of the time. She's a great author-- I've read her earlier books-- and I think she's really reaching her pinnacle here.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling dialogue and wonderful characters.......1999-03-01

Topnotch Kerstan, Celia is a survivor with style who gets her man with wit and humor and tenacity. The supporting cast for a regency is broad but well delineated. Loved this book it is a keeper.
