I got this book and it definetly is like a refference guide, it does not go into depth and just reccomends the obvius, or describes what dif. vitamins are for, I bought at the same time TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR FERTILITY and it did give me a lot of information I did not know about our cycles, and now I am more knowledgable of as the name states: I FEEL IN CHARGE!!! and know what is going on in my body on a daily basis, a GREAT BOOK! GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars Helped Us Get Pregnant! .......2006-01-13

I'm 39- my husbands 43 - and we had all but given up hope on getting pregnant. We were about to start seeing a fertilty expert, when a woman in my office told me about this book. She was my age, followed the plans and conceived within 7 months. I decided to give it a try! I used the nutrition advice, diet advice, and made some of the lifestyle changes, as well as changing some habits that I was surprised to learn could affect my fertility. Just as I was about to give up hope - I FOUND OUT I"M PREGNANT! Yay! It took about 8 months - but we did it on our own, without any fertilty experts. This book is well worth the price - and it's worth giving it a try before you sign off for the expensive IVF or other treatments. I read some of the other reviews before buying and they almost convinced me not to - but my friend was so sure it would help me, ( she had given her copy to her sister-in-law!) I decided to buy it anyway. I'm so glad I did! It wasn't scary - but it was realistic and made me see how important small changes can be! Buy it! It might work for you too! Good LUCK!

Don't waste your money! It states the obvious. Hey, if you want to get pregnant, don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Nothing else about this book useful...

1 out of 5 stars This book is not for the average couple..........2005-12-26

Aleksandra is obviously involved in the publication of this book somehow. Why this moron feels the defensive need to attack other reviewers is beyond me, and downright pathetic. Why do you have to call other people uneducated? Isn't the average reader allowed to post their opinions? You're a desperate loser and a pathetic excuse for a fellow human.

My wife and I bought this book last year hoping it would give us some basic answers to some very basic questions. I agree that the fertilization of a hamster egg is of little consequence to the average couple. We found our money was better spent on "Taking Control of Your Fertility." It offered us very basic information. We were pregnant the following month. Spend your money there. Don't listen to the agenda-pushing moron below!

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Financial Must Read for Twenty-Somethings & College Grads.......2007-06-23

I've read several books on personal finances that were supposedly for 20 year olds and they were all a bore. Those books either were for 40 year olds or never progressed beyond "How to write a check". But, Peter Bielagus' book is just right.

He addresses all the concerns of a twenty year old and beyond with great advice and humor. Peter shows you how to budget without feeling restricted and frustrated. Getting Loaded explains the stock market in laymen's terms which makes you feel comfortable investing your money. All in all, Getting Loaded is a great book to help you set up your financial future and learn how to get your money to work for you.

College graduates should definitely pick up this book and it's also a great graduation gift. I highly recommend this book, it's a great read!

"Getting Loaded" is a sure read that can help you become a millionaire after smart investments and good savings. Bielagus uses step by step examples and explainations that make the hardest economic concepts easy to interpret and learn. "He shows how you can use your youth to your advantage--and take control of your finances while time is on your side." Specifically, Bielagus thoroughly introduces the stock market and how to invest with control and risk in mind and still get a great reward towards the future. Initially, he gives a broad overview of how to's within the stock market and then procedes to explain how to take as much advantage of the stock market as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book, awesome author, awesome advice!!!.......2007-03-04

Ten stars! I wish I bought this book when I was in my 20s, but its not too late at any age. Each of the 50 strategies is a gem, and a few are geared towards middle aged and older folks, the rest I can pass on to my kids (when i have them). It's the best $12 I've ever invested! Here's a quote from the book that I totally agree with: "[this book] is by no means a stairway to heaven, but it is a rope ladder. Keep climbing, you'll get there" (referring to having a healthy financial life). Plus I love his writing style. What good is a book on finances if it'll put you to sleep? On the contrary, it was VERY hard to put this book down. this book goes on my very short list of "must read" books. you can't afford not to.

5 out of 5 stars Funny Money....a book about finances that won't put you to sleep.......2006-03-10

I am a 19 year old high school graduate. I was given a copy from my boss, a commercial realtor. I have to admit that when I read the cover, I laughed inside. I'm 19 like I care about money markets, stocks, bonds, IRA's, and 401k's. All this is like a foreign language to someone my age...and it is a language few can help us decipher. Peter Bielagus is one of those few translators. He does it in a poignant and humorous manner that made it hard for me to put down. I intend to make sure that everyone I know has a copy of this hilariously and helpful guide to finances. Peter finally proves that money can be fun. Go out and get yourself a copy today it's a must have for young adults and a should have for every other age group

5 out of 5 stars Informative, entertaining, and very concise.......2005-04-28

This book is wonderful for a young person looking to get on track with his/her finances. It manages to explain the mundane world of treasury bonds and retirement accounts in an witty and entertaining way while avioding jargon. After just a few chapters I was ready to fianlly open up that tax-favored 401k and stuff it with some no load index mutual funds. It's a must read for anybody who's green on investments (no pun intended.)

    Book Description

On hearing about the coming energy crisis and impending ecological collapse many people ask, "But what can I do?" Relocalize Now! provides the best answers to date.

This timely guide from the Post Carbon Institute analyses the full depth of the crisis of industrial civilization, outlines the centrality of the global economic system in this crisis, and then proposes a plan for the global relocalization of our way of life. It promotes the idea of people recreating local communities--or "outposts"--at the level of neighborhood and nation that can begin to build "parallel public infrastructures" for survival, along with ways of networking efforts together for wider support. It does this through presenting:

The book's innovative project ideas such as a community retirement fund and corporate disobedience--nonviolent ways to disengage from globalization--are supplemented by practical tools for relocalizing and examples of charter outposts from LA to Alaska and Toronto. With a glossary and an extensive resources section, Relocalize Now! contains all you need to build the alternative.

This second volume in Kettelhack's series takes on the "terrible twos." Here people in recovery share their experiences and insights in dealing with long-suppressed feelings of anger, loss, guilt, love, and self-acceptance. Kettelhack shows how "sticking with it"--persevering with the struggle to deal with new feelings and refusing to give in to addictive impulses--ultimately creates the sense of life as an ongoing adventure, one more vivid, exciting and sustaining than had ever been thought possible. Guy Kettelhack has written seven books on recovery. He is completing a Master's degree in psychoanalysis, and is an analyst-in-training at the Boston and New York Centers for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. A graduate of Middlebury College, Kettelhack has also done graduate work in English literature at Bread Loaf School of English at Oxford University. He lives in New York City.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful and practical.......2007-04-10

Excellent book that I used as a guide for the my early recovery. Must have for the struggles and challenges of recovery.

    5 out of 5 stars Understanding Me.......2006-02-18

Having recently celebrated my 1 year anniversary in AA, this book really helped me understand where I am. There just aren't many people with my sobriety time in the fellowships I attend. They seem to have more or less time, so it has been difficult for me to understand why I feel the way I do. Those that came into AA when I did all seem to be gone and anybody with about my sobriety has been there before. I have a great sponsor, a solid Big Book Program, great fellowship and a constantly improving "life", but why do I feel different than I did a few months ago? Not bad, not great, but just good.
This book was an incredible experience of being able to feel comfortable with the fact that I am "normal" at this stage.
The author has a nice mix of his feelings and some testimony from real, live AA members sharing their experiences and feelings. I would read a little each night after my meetings and feel like I had gone to another meeting. It left me calm and hopeful, like most of my AA experiences on my path. I rarely read a book that I appreciate, but this is one. Thank you, Guy.

4 out of 5 stars If you're in your second your, look forward to relate..........2004-01-17

I received this book after my first year of sobriety. It was incredibly useful to understand the transitions that I went through after just focusing on being clean & sober. I highly recommend to anyone who starts becoming more aware of feelings and life circumstances that we had years of not dealing with.

5 out of 5 stars Helped to remind me that I'm not alone.......2001-01-05

I bought this book after I celebrated my first abstinence Bday and didn't read it for another 6 months. I was so comforted by the stories of recovering folk in their 2nd year of sobriety, all who were experiencing difficulties in recovery that I could relate to. One of the most important things this book helped me to see is that it's okay to struggle. Now that I have 21 months of sobriety, it's not all about how do I take a shower or cook for myself; rather, I'm learning how to be a part of the world. This book was a welcome reminder that the issues I struggle with are akin to those that many 2nd-year recoverers struggle with.

Businesses will only achieve their true potential, according to Dave Marcum, Steve Smith, and Mahan Khalsa, when the people that run them learn to "think business." In businessThink, the authors, all corporate veterans now with the FranklinCovey leadership development organization, propose eight rules that create a framework for cultivating this different thought process. "Most people are just going through the motions of doing (not thinking) business--merely practicing their comfortable old routines," they write. "Others, the really successful ones, are getting killer results through changing their thinking to become more disciplined, rigorous, creative, and sound." Applicable to any position, from staffer to senior executive, the principles are: check your ego at the door (to develop an open, united atmosphere); create curiosity (to uncover new options); move off the solution (to clarify the issue); get evidence (to clarify the problem); calculate the impact (to weigh investment against return); explore the ripple effect (to view the big picture); slow down for yellow lights (to watch for obstacles); and discover the cause (to understand underlying truths). Each element is fleshed out in one or more chapters that showcase them in identifiable, real-world situations. The combination adds up to a logical, feasible program that virtually everyone can follow. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

Research shows that over fifty percent of all business decisions fail; sixty percent of all businesses fail before the sixth year, and eighty-two percent go under before their tenth anniversary; and eight out of every ten new products fail. In direct contrast, research also shows that ninety-one percent of all businesspeople are as confident as ever in making decisions. Decision confidence is up. Success is down. While we are an inventive, entrepreneurial society, an innovation explosion has also been tagged with a business implosion. What gives?

businessThink is a revolutionary new method that bridges the monumental gap between the results businesses and people want and the failure they often get. This book is the only business training that tomorrow's leaders will need to consistently create effective solutions and take themselves and their associates into the zone of optimum performance.

businessThink transforms readers into businessthinkers with provocative new rules for accelerating work while revitalizing the enterprise. With rules like "Check Your Ego at the Door," "Move Off the Solution," "Get Evidence," and "Create Curiosity."

businessThink promises to significantly increase results by delivering hard core business thinking and fusing it with high intuition and emotional intelligence that open up, rather than shut down, thinking and collaboration. Effectively blended, these skills become the new business intelligence that is needed to get it right-no matter what.

FranklinCovey is the world's premier leadership development organization, whose client portfolio includes eighty-two of the Fortune 100 companies and more than two-thirds of the Fortune 500 companies. With 45 offices in 38 countries, FranklinCovey employs 3,500 associates.

Dave Marcum has a unique blend of management experience with positions ranging from VP of Sales & Marketing, to Chief Operating Officer in the publishing industry, to Business Transformation Leader at FranklinCovey, a 500 million dollar company. Dave is a respected authority in complex sales and has worked with companies across the globe like EDS, Andersen, Microsoft, and Accenture.

Steve Smith has two degrees in management and psychology. He has been a human resources manager inside a Fortune 500 company, an entrepreneur starting his own consulting firm, and head of development of FranklinCovey's The 4 Roles of Leadership. He has presented management programs to clients such as Nike, Hard Rock Cafe, and the U.S. Air Force.

Mahan Khalsa is a world-renowned expert in business development, whose clients include Arthur Andersen, Microsoft, and Walt Disney. He graduated with honors in economics from UCLA and has an MBA from Harvard. Mahan is Vice President of the Sales Performance Group at FranklinCovey Co.

2 out of 5 stars An overdose of self-praise, little originality or practicality.......2005-08-25

    Summary:
Do not read businessThink, unless you want to learn how to write hundreds of pages of common knowledge and hype it as revolutionary thinking. The book does contain useful thoughts but they are definitely not new and are wrapped in disgusting self-propaganda for the businessThink "methodology". The authors do not demonstrate any significant knowledge of business best practices or the relevant literature, consequently the examples used to underline the points are far from enlightening.

    Details:
Normally I stop reading such books before the end of the introduction, but being on holiday and the weather being rainy, I got as far as the beginning of Chapter 5. Then I decided that businessThink was not even worth the $6 bargain price I paid for it.

I do not expect every business book to contain breakthrough ideas (for instance, I enjoyed reading "Thinking Inside the Box" even if it claimed to contain only the old, commonsense rules of business). However, what Marcum and Smith did in this book; pasting together trite from business literature, calling it "revolutionary" on every second page of the book, lacing it with irrelevant or imprecise examples, and using a conceited and patronizing style in the meantime is way too much for me.

Being mostly a compilation of common business knowledge, businessThink does give you some good general advice, but much better business books exist, with more relevant and practical examples and written by more modest authors.

Let me share with you what I have read in the first four chapters and then you can decide whether you are interested in the rest. (My comments are in parentheses.)

Foreword by Stephen R. Covey: Powerful breakthroughs need a paradigm change, not just a change in attitudes. He believes that businessThink "presents a provocative, principle-centered paradigm shift for rethinking the way we do business". This book is "every person's MBA for the real world". And this goes on for 8 pages... (By the way, if I hear or read "paradigm change" or "paradigm shift" I get immediately suspicious. This is one of the favorite phrases of empty-headed corporate parrots.)

Introduction: Despite of an "innovation explosion" and a confidence among entrepreneurs, most businesses fail. This is because most businesspeople just "do" business and not think about it. (This is the first of many not-so-solid conclusions of the authors. A business can fail for many reasons, inadequate thinking being just one important aspect.)
But do not worry, all you feeble-minded, unable-to-think-coherently businesspeople around the globe, because here we are to help you out with our eight rules that "will be the seeds of a much-needed revolution in business". We offer a complete, fail-proof solution to the "dysfunction of the real business world". Live by these rules and "you will develop a business instinct or seventh sense".
If you learn how to think correctly - that is, if you adopt businessThink - then it will be better for both you and for your company. Since you may find this idea difficult to comprehend, let us elaborate the upsides of thinking versus not thinking. (And they actually list the advantages of using your brain at work! This is probably necessary because the moronic reader has not learnt businessThink yet. By the end of the book, he might be able to assemble such a list himself, but for the time being he surely needs instruction by the bright authors on this point.)

Chapter 1: Today thinking is the most important activity of businesses. But most decisions fail, while decision confidence is high. (The authors cite research results, some of them without proper reference.)
Let us see an example of a company making bad decisions - Webvan. (A verbatim quote from Fortune magazine follows, with what I believe to be a rather shallow analysis of Webvan's failure. Surfing on the Net, I found a better article on the topic in 5 minutes. If Marcum and Smith could not come up with an original example, at least they should have chosen their quote wisely.)
In today's business white-collar productivity is all-important. Thinking is everybody's job. (I believe, I've also heard this before...)
Currently in most businesses "there is no common approach or common criteria for making decisions". But here are the Eight Rules of businessThink listed and shortly explained.
Neither EQ, nor IQ is enough for proper application of businessThink, you need a fusion of the two.

Chapters 2 and 3: The first rule is "Check Your Ego at the Door". That is, listen to others, do not be overconfident, show humility etc. (Of course, this rule is only applicable in business decisions but you can forget about it when you write business books - at least that's what Marcum and Smith seem to think...)
Some of the revolutionary ideas regarding the first rule include:
    - Don't think black and white, but consider other options.
    - Beware the absolutes like all, never etc.
For your convenience, these rules are also demonstrated in business scenarios, comparing the "old school" thinking with businessThink.
(Many of these thoughts are meaningful. The only problem is that the "old school" does not exist. At least I have never read any business book or methodology that would recommend that on a company meeting you should say things like "The idiots. I totally agree with you..." instead of "What kind of information could we get together...?". Of course in practice you will meet stupid reactions, but this is not because of some pervasive "old school". Smart people have avoided thinking black and white for centuries, while dumb people will continue to react stupidly. So it is a ridiculous claim of the authors that businessThink provides the reader with a completely new approach.)

Chapter 4: The second rule is "Create curiosity". Ask questions, refresh your beliefs and forget about hierarchy and titles.
(This is of course not bad advice, but the examples cited range from the inaccurate - Grace Murray Hopper inventing the COBOL language - to the unproven in practice - the company IDEO reinventing the shopping cart in a TV show -, indicating a lack of serious knowledge or adequate research by Marcum and Smith on this topic. This shallowness of the authors is also evident from other parts of the book, e.g. in the beginning of Chapter 5 they cite a research result but instead of referencing the original publication they refer to another book. I would expect that if you make an experiment a starting point of a chapter in your book, you would actually read the original report in full, not just some interpretation of it.)

Enough said... If you are really in need all these ideas then I doubt that you will profit from any book, including this one. I give two stars for the glitters of humor and for the honesty of the authors' own failure stories.

    4 out of 5 stars A framework for decisions.......2004-01-18

There aren't many new ideas within this publication - hence 4 stars. I couldn't help but think of De Bono's six thinking hats as a framework for thinking that has many parallels with the BusinessThink publication.
However, that doesn't detract from what is a message that needs repeating and a message that needs to be absorbed by all of us to make the process of decision making (and thinking in general) more productive.
You're going to get value from this book where dysfunction is at its greatest. If you're already part of a productive team you're probably going to read this book and see recognition of what you're already doing rather than learn anything new.
Personally, this books remains a favourite. Whenever we make a few successful decisions (or believe we do) this is the first sort of book we disparage and neglect. But it's just when we start to believe our infallibility and skip steps within this framework that we start to make blunders.

The authors introduce some interesting statistics: successful decisions are fewer on the ground that what our beliefs might suggest.

1 out of 5 stars An exercise in cynical plagarism.......2004-01-06

Some time ago I read the excellent "Let's Get Real Or Let's Not Play" by Mahan Khalsa. Seeing him listed as one of the authors of "BusinessThink" I bought it. Only then did I discover that Khalsa appears to have had very little to do with "BusinessThink" (in a long list of acknowledgements he doesn't even feature) and, more seriously, that "BusinessThink" is essentially just a rewrite of "Let's get Real" - indeed whole swathes of "BusinessThink" consists of word for word plagarism of "Let's Get Real". Had there been some acknowledgement of this fact by the authors or Franklin Covey this practice might, just, have been okay. But there is no hint in the introduction, or elsewhere, that "BusinessThink" is just a slightly reworked "Let's Get Real". Shame on the authors, on FranklinCovey, and on the publishers for this exercise in cynicism.

5 out of 5 stars How to get things done!.......2003-12-10

I loved this book. As a manager in a large company I've found that it can be difficult to deal with all of the politics, games, and ego's that are part of my daily routine. Business Think provides a methodology for dealing with all of the bull that goes on in business. It also gave me a good outline to make better decisions and be able to determine the things that I should be doing from those things that I could be doing.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book for the real world!.......2003-12-06

This is one of the rare business books that isn't chuck full of useless theory or excessive amounts of research with no application. This book provides real skills and a real business tool for objective thinking. I now understand how to build a logical buisness case for or against a presented solution, rather than the typical impulsive projects that are typically based off of bias, ego, opinion, or gut feel. The emphasis on ego is invaluable. Ego costs companies millions of dollars every day, primarily because everyone's in denial that it exist. Thank you businessThink for finally bring a book to the table that is insync with business realities.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the easily Frightened!.......2005-07-14

My husband and I recently decided to begin trying to have a baby. We decided to buy this book along with a couple others so that we could prepare. This was one of the 1st books that I read and after about the first half, I was convinced that I would be infertile and unable to have a baby. Some of the information is very good but a good proportion of the book covers the plethora of things that can cause a woman to be infertile and then all of the latest medical treatments that can help an infertile woman get pregnant. This might be a great book for the woman who has been trying for a while without success but for me, I finished it and was scared to death!

    3 out of 5 stars Overkill!.......2003-10-29

This book provides some wonderful information, in a very easy-to-digest format. The section on the pre-conception exam is great- you'll know what to expect, and how to make sure your doctor isn't overlooking something important. I also liked the attention on male fertility issues, which are often ignored. However, the first half of the book is esentially "you could be infertile, and not even realize it!" It describes the fertility problems caused by cysts, endometriosis, etc., and lists the very common symptoms (gee, who hasn't had headaches or heavy periods?) and stresses how frequently women have these diseases without realizing it. Halfway through the book, I was convinced I had every problem listed. The authors' approach may be helpful if you're having difficulty getting pregnant and want to educate yourself on possible causes, but I think for most people it's really overkill.

    5 out of 5 stars Well..........2001-07-07

Ordered it....1 week later it came, I opened the box while my wife was doing the ept exam, two lines appeared, never read the book. One month later, gave it to my brother since his wife is trying to get pregnant. She says its pretty good.

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative..........2001-02-27

My husband and I purchased this book while we were undergoing fertility treatments for "unexplained" infertility. The doctors had no other explanation for why two otherwise healthy people would be having problems conceiving naturally. I found this book full of information in laymen terms without all the medical jargon which can be boring and hard to understand. I wanted to be a better informed patient and be able to make responsible decisions regarding what treatments we were going to have. Getting Pregnant tells us about environmental factors, personal habits, and all the treatments that's available as well as general information for couples who are not experiencing infertility. I was surprised to read some of the unfavorable comments left by other readers. It is extremely draining physically and emotionally having to deal with infertility and everyone should take what they read with a grain of salt. I am happy to say that we had a beautiful baby girl while waiting for an IVF cycle and I guess that's where the "unexplained" comes in again. In all this book is well worth the read.

3 out of 5 stars Would not recomend this couples just beginning to try.......2000-09-10

I thought the book was ok but not really geared for couples just starting to try to conceive as it claims to be. There are a few helpful suggestions on baby making but most of the info is about the many things that can possibly be wrong with you or your spouse to cause you NOT to conceive and about medical treatments available.

        Book Description

Do you have a story or a message that just keeps dogging you and just won't let you go? Every time that your gaze falls upon a bestseller list, do you wonder why your name is not on it? Are friends, family members, and/or colleagues continually commenting on how much they love to read your letters? Would publication of your work land you the professional praise or tenure that you seek? If you answered "Yes" to any of the above, "You were born to be published," says author Tom Bird, founder of The Tom Bird Method T, which offers, no matter what you write, a proven system for getting your writing published. Some of the central themes to be covered in this book include: . Seeing your book in print in as little as twenty days . Learning the secrets behind getting published that other authors don't want you to know . Getting paid for your book before it is even written . Receiving offers to get your book published or represented by a top literary agent in as little as a few hours . Discovering everything you need to know about protecting your work from being stolen. Tom Bird employed all of the orthodox methods for getting published and met with nothing but frustration and failure. So he finally decided to develop his own strategy for not only writing a book quickly, easily, and enjoyably, but getting whatever it is he wrote published, The Tom Bird Method T. Six weeks after doing so, at the age of twenty-six, Tom sold his first book to, at that time, the third largest publisher in the world, for an amount equivalent to three times his yearly salary as The Assistant Director of Publicity with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since then, Tom, who has gone onto publish fifteen other books and whose work has appeared in dozens of magazines, has shared his Eleven Laws through over 3,000 appearances at more than 100 top college and university campuses, and has helped thousands of writers in securing a publishing deal. He details in this book not only his own successes, but his methods for leading so many others to their literary dreams. As a result, you will find everything you need to know to publish whatever it is that you write. If you ever wanted to publish, for whatever reason, and/or felt that you were born to be published, this book is for you. Tom resides in Sedona, Arizona, with Tammy Kelly, their daughter Skyla, and their two dogs, five cats, and two birds. "I can't thank you enough for helping me fulfill my heart's deepest desire..."-Debra Blais, Author of Letting Your Heart Sing. "Thank you for showing me how to get published...over 200,000 books sold to date..."- Jan Larkey, Author of Flatter Your Figure, Simon & Schuster

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Put your passion into action!.......2006-12-19

Outstanding... the system presented in this book is simple enough for the unpublished writer to follow, motivating enough to follow it, and detailed enough to follow through, each step of the way. Tom Bird answers every reason for not getting published in this inspiring, common sense manual. He assumes we writers want to make a positive difference in the world, and that we need to make a living. Right on!

This book introduces the world of publishing in a step by step way. The author is well aware of how frightening this can be to a novice. He gives generously of his own positive attitude, and addresses each concern with practical strategies. The eleven "laws" that organize the book function more as a motivational "ladder" than as a useful list. The 90+ pages of examples, to do lists, and resources are worth the price of admission, alone.

If you are looking for a book to inspire and inform you, this is the perfect one. Forget lethargy, passivity, and inaction. Forget ruthless self-criticism! The success stories of new writers will renew your faith in your own unique contribution. From there, it is just a question of taking action. If you have a passion to be published, this book can help you to get it done.

3 out of 5 stars Some golden nuggets among the sludge.......2006-11-24

Shouldn't someone who teaches writing and publishing have an editor whose spell check program at the very least deletes the "a" from "heafty" before putting the book into print? This type of pervasive sloppiness, along with a little too much oddly placed self-promotion, distracted me from the main message, which is how to get a book or magazine article published.

On the plus side, it does appear that anyone can get published, with perseverence and time and effort, especially if one happens to be buddies with a famous person in need of a ghostwriter. There are some good references to valuable resources, including one web site that is misspelled once but spelled correctly another time. And the book has a very positive, encouraging tone, which may provide stuck would-be published authors with the impetus to get those hundred letters to literary agents out sooner rather than later.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Bird Nails It Again.......2006-11-11

Tom Bird gives you the nuts & bolts of publishing in an easy-to-learn intuitive manner. He breaks down publishing your book, whether fiction or non-fiction, into simple chunks of information.

Just like in "Write From God" or "Releasing Your Artist Within," with Tom's fresh approach and deep industry knowledge, he distills the essence of publishing into a handful of simple guidelines. These guidelines or laws range from, "Always write what you feel most strongly about..." to "If you are so led, collaborating on a book with a well-known source or celebrity is a great way to get published fast."

Tom provides substantial supporting information such as a checklist for self-publishing, sample query letters and sample book proposals.

"You Were Born To Be Published..." is a great tool for you to become the published writer that you want to be!

5 out of 5 stars You Were Born to be Published by Tom Bird.......2006-11-07

So, you've just completed your first opus, and you're pretty proud of yourself. After all, this could just be the Great American Novel. Little do you know that, even though your manuscript is finished, your work has only just begun! There are miles to go between "The End" and that Oprah interview.

You're a babe in the woods. You are about to enter the world of agents, queries, proposals, copyrights, contracts, publicity and promotion, and you are a deer in headlights. You haven't a clue about the many procedures, options and decisions that lie ahead of you, not to mention the many landmines in your way that will derail your progress to the top of the best-seller list.

Enter Tom Bird with his roadmap to getting there. He has been down this road, through the trials and tribulations and, finally, with his own method, to the successes of book publishing.

This book is a gem, a "must have" for any first-time writer. It is not only comprehensive, but concise, succinct, clear, and very easy to use. It is well organized, and loaded with examples of query letters and proposal submissions to help jump start the process of getting published.

You Were Born to be...Published will be an indispensable reference book on any writer's shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Reality Orientation on Getting Published.......2006-10-29

Tom Bird's You Were Born to be Published

As a published author with my share of rejection slips, I find Tom Bird's book a fresh breeze. That's because it's the no-bull guide to getting published. His eleven laws frequently conflict with the conventional wisdom. He tells you don't even try to go to a traditional publisher without an agent. Don't send manuscripts until the agent likes your query letter. Make your letter one page. Don't expect the publisher to spend a fortune on marketing your book unless you're a famous author. Realize that print-on-demand is the way of the future (or even the present). Face the costs of writing and publishing realistically. Write what you know and are passionate about. And on and on.
He also points out the multidimensional roles you have to take if you're going to self-publish--writer, editor, publisher, marketer, publicity agent, business manager. You have to be a literary schizophrenic!
Stuff I know from hard experience is right!
I have read a number of authors on getting published, but none has the ring of reality that Tom Bird does.

TV chef Carrie Robbins (aka The Negligee Gourmet) thinks her archrival Philip Mallory is the ultimate food snob, but the network wants them to tape a cooking series together. The stuffy Brit just doesn't get Carrie's take on cuisine: serving up a mouthwatering dish while dressed like one. Well, if he can't take the heat, he can get out of the kitchen!

Only, after she and Philip share a stimulating session of beating and whipping -- eggs, that is! -- Carrie realizes two things. First, that even though the so-called king of cooking is as difficult as a chocolate soufflé, he's even more delicious. And second, that one taste isn't going to be nearly enough....
