Book Description
At one time or another we have all been betrayed by someone we trusted, all felt the sting of deceit and subsequent shattering of self-confidence. And when the people we count on betray our trust, the wound is deep and long-lasting.
In How Could You Do This to Me?, Dr. Jane Greer teaches readers:the types of people who are more at risk of betrayal the warning signs of someone who is untrustworthy a process that helps decide whether a relationship is worth saving or whether it should be abandoned.Part One discusses the roots of trust, blind trust, and the reasons betrayers betray. Part Two reveals our betrayers' many faces: admirers, users, or rivals. Part Three focuses on the fallout from betrayal: confrontation, revenge, and betrayal, and talks about how you can learn to trust your judgment and others again.

Great Book.......2007-03-05
I bought this book in the aftermath of my divorce. While reading the book, I realized I had been betrayed by most people close to me, all situations I had supressed to avoid conflict. This book helped me to become aware of my own weaknesses so that I am able to better prevent more betrayls in the future. You can not control the way others act or how they treat you, but you can learn to better control your own emotions and not let those people get the best of you. This was a great book! I loved it so much I gave it to my ex husband upon our divorce. Maybe it will help him out in his next relationship.
Nothing new here.......2005-07-06
This is actually not a terrible book; it's just not a book for someone who has already been researching and reading up on how to heal a broken heart after a betrayal. I bought it expecting some new insight and/or advice, but mostly it's a "beginner's primer" that defines betrayal, looks at childhood and how this figures in, etc. Very elementary, very basic. If you're just starting down the road to recovery after betrayal, and have not spent years talking to a therapist and reading books about it, as I have, then this particular book is probably a good place to start. Just don't expect any concrete advice or specific direction. It just isn't here.
No Real Trust after Betrayal.......2004-06-27
Once trust is broken, it is much like a glass window; it cannot be fixed. It can be taped, glued, pieced together, etc. It can never be the intact and unbroken window it once was. Some things just cannot be fixed as if they never occurred. With that in mind, the emphasis is on whether or not one wishes to fix it and why, and the decision to return a trust that is broken, decisions that always determine the value of the relationship and how deeply woven and connected it is. Recovery from broken trust (not trusts) lies in gently picking up the broken pieces, putting them in some type of order, and attempting to keep them there, an almost impossible task, and one too often for objective professionals. Success is tenuous at best, and unsatisfying at worst because both generally mourn what might have been had the trust not been broken, and the relationship unimpaired by those lingering ghosts. Most do not trust once the trust has been broken, but simulate an appearance of trust that is usually a small fraction of that which was thrown away by the deceiver, and which was forced onto the victim, by the knowledge of the deceit.
Succinct.......2004-01-22
This book says a lot with few words; it might almost require a second reading to absorb all it has to offer. It gave me insight into the motives of others and invaluable perspective on my own unconscious contributions to some of the "betrayals" I have experienced.
Soul searching read!.......2002-10-08
"How could you do this to me?" helped me put my thoughts in order. I had pretty much figured out what had happened in my life - why the betrayal took place, why it happened to me and where I needed to go from there. The problem was that it was all so jumbled in my head and I was so emotionally charged that nothing seemed to make sense. I have been able to search my soul, am putting my thoughts together in an orderly fashion in order to move on with my life now.

Character Inside before Power Accumulates Outside: That's How Leaders Evolve.......2007-05-11
I found this book fascinating as the authors focus on the internal world of leaders who are trustworthy, and the nurture of a character that others will want to follow. My favorite quotes:
--To be teachable, one must devote a significant amount of time to learning.
--Leaders are defined buy those who follow them.
--A successful mentoring experience does require a significant prerequisite: a quality person to mentor.
--The mentoring or coaching role is mainly about creating a safe environment to discuss any topic.
--Trustworthiness means being reliable, faithful, and unfailing. Trustworthy leaders are honest and transparent, committed, dedicated, and keep promises and confidences. They also have the moral courage to do the right thing and to stand up for what they believe even when it is difficult to do so.
--In practical, day-to-day leadership, only what is accomplished matters.
--Compared to high-profile leaders with big personalities who make headlines and become celebrities, the good-to-great leaders [leaders who have taken companies to unprecedented long-term growth] seem to have come from Mars. Self-effacing, quiet, reserved, even shy--these leaders are a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will. They are more like Lincoln and Socrates than Patton or Caesar.
For aspiring leaders, this book will help you clarify the character traits needed inside before the power accumulates outside.
SPIRITUAL VALUES & LEADERSHIP.......2005-05-20
Presents a style of leadership based on 8 values: humility; development; commitment; focus; compassion; integrity; peacemaking; and endurance. The authors explore how these spiritual values are keys to building trust with people and becoming a successful leader, as well as building a successful career. This book has its distinct point of view-no question about it. But given the abundance of bad leadership in business, politics, and other spheres, the spiritual qualities this book links with effective leadership deserve serious consideration.
Changed my Life.......2005-05-18
The "how to" leadership books are spilling off the shelves, so I thought that "Trust Me" to be another ineffective book on this subject. However, as I began to read I couldn't put the book down. I read it through in 2 days. I've then re-read it 2 times. It is GREAT!
Ron Potter and Wayne Hastings have managed to peel away to the true core of leadership.
From insight about the greatest leader of all time to colorful stories about other leaders, it's a riveting book.
This book has personally changed my life and my leadership style. I have incorporated the principles from the book and have created personal goals in an attempt to be a better leader.
If you lead people...either a business executive, production line worker, a team player or a parent, "Trust Me' is essential reading.
Great Book for all Leaders.......2004-04-10
Trust Me is one of those rare books that provides timeless insights with personal insights and help for all of us. Hastings and Potter take the reader on a leadership journey and challenge us at the end of each chapter with thought-provoking questions and personal growth suggestions. I literally could not put this book down! It has helped me and my team to understand how we can be successful leaders. This is a must read for any person wanting to improve their leadership skills.
Trust Me - Keys to building trust in people.......2004-04-06
Wayne Hastings and Ron Potter have written an inspirational book that provides the key principles we all need to guide us in our personal and business lives. It is a book to be kept close at hand to keep our thinking and actions on the path of a principle based life. The real life stories and the opportunity provided to reflect after each chapter with thought provoking questions about ourselves and how we interact with others helps teach us how to be leaders others can trust.

Enjoy.......2007-02-16
Albeit the book's computer tech is out of date about 20 years -this book was written in 95. You'll have a wonderful time reading it. It's not a thriller but is a good and touching love story when the couple try very hard to understand each other. If you go to the beach you can read it in a sitting with no problem at all.
characters don't come to life.......2006-10-25
Desdemona is an odd ball in her family. She comes from a family of theater people, but she doesn't have any of the family talent for acting. Instead, she runs a catering company that helps keep the rest of the family financial stable.
Stark runs a computer security company and first meets Desdemona when he is jilted and Desdemona is trying to collect on her catering bill for a wedding that never happened.
The characters in the book seem flat and with about 100 pages left I found myself skimming because I didn't really care what happened. Sometimes the characters just acted completely irrationally. For example, they didn't call the police when major evidence was found in a murder case. I just couldn't get into it when the characters seemed so ridiculously unreal.
Another Great JAK Book!.......2006-04-28
"Trust Me" is another great JAK book! I love how JAK goes out of her way to create unique and funny characters. Here, we have Sam Stark, a high-tech, computer security nerd (reminds me of Bill Gates but sexier of course;-)) and Desdemona Wainwright, a quirky caterer who comes from a fringe theatre-type family. Because Stark is a bit of nerd, he is rather clueless in matters of the heart. He gets dumped by his second (yes second) fiancee at the altar. Despite his high consumption of cerebral brain matter (Stark spent time at a Colorado think tank) he doesn't seem to realize that a prenup agreement doesn't go over so well with the ladies. Desdemona of course doesn't care about prenups. She just wants to get her money for catering Stark's would-be wedding reception. Fortunately for Stark, Desdemona is a softy. She begins to feel sorry that Stark got dumped at the altar and invites him for an evening of fringe theatre instead of moping around on his would-be wedding night with an inflatable doll (you have to read the book to get this point). This of course leads to a mutual attraction between Stark and Desdemona. In the typical JAK fashion, "Trust Me" is full of sexual and romantic tension, which makes for a great read!
Stunning!.......2004-10-07
Being a devoted Amanda Quick fan, I've decided to look up all her many incarnations. I decided on _Trust Me_ as my first foray into her titles written as Jayne Ann Krentz and was well pleased with the selection.
The characters in this book are amazing -- every single one of them! Desdemona is one of the best romantic heroines I've seen. She is sharp, witty and has just enough edge to make her real. Sam is the perfect counterpart to Desdemona. He is brilliant yet so unsure of himself. He needs love and it is touching to watch Desdemona take him in and teach him about real trust and the true meaning of love and family. He also has the most irresistible tendency to just blurt out exactly what he's thinking. His forthrightness is sexy and refreshing. These two have such explosive chemistry and such witty banter that the pages fly by and soon you're at the end of the book before you've even realized it has begun.
Not only are the main characters remarkable, the secondary characters are great! Desdemona's family -- theater people who are all named after characters in Shakespeare's plays -- are hilarious, charming and endearing. Also, Sam's brothers are cute and early on give you insight to the underlying aspects of Sam's personality.
There is a mystery that comes into play mid-way through the book that drives the plot and expounds upon Desdemona's and Sam's relationship. More than anything though, the driving force of this book is the romance between Desdemona and Sam. Their's is a tender, turbulent love that warms the heart.
_Trust Me_, my first by Jayne Ann Krentz, will certainly not be my last. It is evident that under whatever pseudonym, Krentz or Quick, this lady has talent. I highly recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed work by Amanda Quick or to anyone who is looking for a fresh, enjoyable contemporary romance with memorable characters and a romance that is outstanding!
Good Summer Read!.......2004-08-31
This story is probably the best Miss Krentz has ever written. I adore this story. It's a keeper on your shelf!
Desdemona is a caterer with a pass, Stark is a man who was left at the altar. Desdemona was hired to cater his wedding but ended up saving it. And when heat started to arise, mysterious things happen. Especially when the person is eager for ARCADE (the software) to kill...
I love this story. The suspense was wonderful, I couldn't breathe when I read the story. THIS IS A BUYER! GET IT!

Book Description
John Updike's short story collections are occasions for celebration -- the pleasures to be found in them are great indeed. This marvelous volume contains one gem after another, stories to be savored one at a time and returned to again and again.
Here is trust betrayed -- and fulfilled. Here are parents struggling to maintain that fragile claim on their offspring's childish awe....Here are husbands and wives as only Updike knows them, leaving each other, loving each other, often at the same time. Here are passion ignited and quenched, absurd hope, regret at the last minute. Here is life as we live in it, in twenty-two stories of uncommon beauty and pathos from a master storyteller at the peak of his brilliant career.
Customer Reviews:
Typical Updike.......2002-04-03
Updike can write splendidly. However, he cannot be compared favorably to even good past or great contemporary authors. In this book Updike is more of the same labored almost beautiful writing. I found Trust Me to be much of the same. For a good short story look elsewhere. However if you are interested in Updike read his earlier books. It seems that as his career lengthened he changed his writing to try and leave a more refined and antiseptic waft in the readers mind, perhaps he had thoughts of stuffy British grandeur.
Review of Trust me by John Updike.......2001-06-09
The audio casset version of this book is outstanding and is read by the author, which is always a great asset. The short stories are artful character studies that vividly describe the souls of your neighbors, your friends, or yourself in a modern setting. The details are so charming you'll want to listen to it over and over to pick up all the nuances.
A Good First Choice for the Updike Reader.......2000-08-03
Men, women, what works and what does not - this seems to be the central theme of Trust Me. This was my first Updike book and as a collection of short stories, Trust Me represents a wise choice in this regard. The reader gets a taste of the Updike style in several short works which, despite being rich in detail and innuendo, are easily consumable - especially if read from start to finish without any long breaks.
Trust Updike.......2000-07-14
What, really, can one say against John Updike? Where, in these stories, can he be faulted? Well, the question need not be so rhetorical. One might, for example, consider the charge that his material is relatively unvarying. Time and again in his short stories Updike returns to the same territory: the white, middle-class couple caught up in the flux of an extra-marital affair. This is the central theme of no less than six of these twenty-two tales, but it touches the edges of many of the others too. And of these others all are confined to the same domestic and social milieu - from 'Killing', in which a daughter must cope with her father's death from Alzheimer's Disease, to 'The City', in which a salesman unexpectedly contracts appendicitis while on a business trip. Where is the broader vision - the black characters, the homosexuals, the political radicals? They are absent from Updike's vision. And yet, if this artist paints on a restricted canvas, it is the detail and style of the brushstrokes that redeems his art. 'Trust Me' is as reliable - as trustworthy - a demonstration as any work in the Updike corpus that the man's linguistic style is extraordinary. Central to it is an astonishing facility for metaphor; no less characteristic is his ear for the musical, his faculty for critical analysis, and a taste for symbolism that is at once unobtrusive and yet deeply satisfying. With such an abundance of stylistic gifts all working simultaneously, the unchanging world of Updike's characters remains fresh and, in 'Trust Me', fresher than ever.
Good stories.......1999-10-27
If you are looking to be knocked on your butt by a short story book, forget this and go buy "The Stories of John Cheever" IMMEDIATELY. I would suggest that book to ANYONE. It is up there with "One Hundred Years of Solitude," "Beloved," and "A Separate Peace" as the best books I've read. But if you have read that and liked it, this book is a good one. I would have given it 3 1/2 stars if I could, but oh well. These stories are elegant, eloquent, and solid, but not as magical as the world John Cheever created. But the writing is good. The stories move. I was never bored, and I was even very moved sometimes. I think the best one in it is the one called "More Stately Mansions."
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious!.......2006-03-22
TRUST ME ON THIS is one of those books I can read over and over again and not get bored with it. As a journalist, I appreciate the scenes at the tabloid, which are funny as hell. However, Westlake also does a great job blending in the mystery and romance aspects, and has created a believable and likeable character with the heroine, Sara. This is a must read. Trust me.
Very funny, typically Westlake.......2004-01-06
This was a very funny book. It had the usual Westlake shenanigans and completely outlandish behavior, but the twist is how the newspaper in the story is modeled after The National Inquirer. It made good fun of the "excessive news" industry and added a new concept: the body in the box. This is the holy grail of excessive news stories in this book. The protagonists try to take a picture of a dead famous person in his coffin. Absolutely hilarious! The female protagonist is naive and personable, very believable. The male lead is also believable as a cad who just wants stories that sell. I highly recommend this one to fans of Lawrence Block, Elmore Leonard, and Janet Evanovich (as well as Westlake fans).
Great story, but the WORST Australian accents ever!.......2002-07-21
A great story and an otherwise excellent reading was spoiled for me by the APPALLING "Australian" accents used for three of the characters. I certainly don't expect perfection, but this reader didn't get anywhere near.
These Australians sounded like Cockneys with some bizarre speech defect. A little more research to find out how Australians actually speak might have helped.
Send us up, by all means - the Aussie characters were hilariously written - but please try to at least approximate the accent.
If Kate Winslett and Meryl Streep can do it, so can you. (Okay, Meryl's character was a New Zealander living in Australia, but all the more admirable for that!)
My favorite Westlake.......1999-05-22
This is one of my annual must-reads. I have read it every year since it first came out and I still laugh uproariously at it. Westlake is famous for his comedy capers and this is the best of the bunch.
Hysterically funny.......1997-11-28
If you're a Westlake fan, you'll really like this one. If you haven't tried him yet, you're in for a treat. Think about what a loony bin a tabloid like the National Enquirer must be like, and then multiply it by ten, throw in a murder and Westlake's as-always warped perspective, and you will be rolling on the floor. While this isn't great literature, I was literally gasping for breath as I kept cracking up.

Even if he does have a really, really nice smile.
Trust me on this.

Jess had an amazing summer all lined up. She's finally old enough to be a counselor with all her friends at summer camp. Now, she's just found out that her partner for training week is Sean, her nemesis. Every time she thinks that he's nice, he does something drastic to change her opinion of him. This summer, she won't let herself trust him, no matter how cute he's gotten.
With all the other counselors pairing off, Jess and Sean must find a way to work together. When the group goes out into the forest for a trust walk, each pair has to make their way back to camp by themselves, with one partner blindfolded. Will they make it out of the forest as friends or foes?
TRUST ME is the first book in a new series dealing with first kisses, friendship, and drama. These fun reads are stand alone titles and are perfect for middle school girls. I recommend this series to girls looking for a little romance.

Pucker up for a summer romance that will leave you breathless.......2007-01-18
Fourteen-year-old Jessica "Jess" Kane, and her best friend, Elizabeth "Liz" Stewart have spent the last four years at Camp Lone Star as lowly campers. But this year, the two pals want to be seen as more mature and responsible - and be noticed by some of the adorable older camp counselors. So they decide to attend Camp Lone Star as something slightly different...counselors. Sure, it won't be all fun and games, because the two will be watching over their charges, and trying to arrange different activities to keep them entertained, but they'll have the opportunity to kick-start their love lives, in preparation for their freshman year at Memorial High. However, when Jess realizes that her arch-nemesis for the past four years, Sean Reed, has also been chosen as a counselor this summer, she's furious. Sure, he has a killer smile, and eyes so blue you could drown in them, but he's also one of the biggest troublemakers she's ever encountered, having placed a snake in her bed in the past, and cheated during the end-of-summer Capture the Flag game last year. Jess can't stand to even look at his smug face. But she'll be doing a lot more than just looking at him, when she's stuck as his partner for a week of Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program, to prepare the incoming counselors for their new duties. Okay, so Jess may have to be paired up with the little snake, but she doesn't have to like it. However, when Jess realizes that the two partners will have to take part in a series of trust games, Jess feels like calling it quits, packing up her stuff, and heading home instantly. There's no way that she can trust Sean. Especially when just a glimpse of him makes her heart flutter, and every time they touch she feels an electric charge that is both exciting and scary. But Jess isn't about failure. And if she wants to make it through this week, and the next month, she'll have to suck up her pride and make the most of her situation: no matter how much it hurts.
The moment I learned about the FIRST KISSES series, I was ecstatic. It seems that tween girls have very little to choose from in terms of novels, as many releases are geared towards teens (with more mature storylines), or younger readers. FIRST KISSES isn't like that. This series is proof that the tween genre is becoming a hot commodity, as it focuses on girls teetering in limbo between childhood and teenagedom. Rachel Hawthorne has done a marvelous job with the introductory novel TRUST ME. Her characters are realistic, and likable; while her storylines present extremely relatable situations that will help readers identify with Jess, Liz, Sean, and the rest of the counselors-in-training. While Jess can oft-times be slightly over-dramatic, her determination to make it through an extremely harsh week is admirable; while her ability to stick it out with someone she appears to loathe so much is refreshing. The setting is also noteworthy, as it puts the characters in a situation where they are in charge, without the interference of parents. I can only say that if the rest of the FIRST KISSES novels are even half as enjoyable as TRUST ME, they will be worth reading. Pucker up for a summer romance that will leave you breathless.

Cute for all ages.......2007-01-01
As soon as I saw the First Kisses series available for pre-order on Amazon I knew I had to have them! I just recently bought the first two and thought they were great. What I love about this series is that they're good for pre-teens as well as teens. The main characters in these books are around the age of 14, and the common thread is that they have never been kissed before.
Trust Me is about a girl named Jess. She and her best friend Liz have been going to the same summer camp for 4 years straight, but this year it's different, they're counselors now instead of campers. Jess thinks this summer will be the best one yet, until she is shocked to find out her "trust partner" for the counselor training week is Sean Reed. A boy she hates and definitely can't trust.
At first I was annoyed at Jess for being so immature, (she didn't trust Sean because of some pranks he pulled on her in the past years at camp), but she grew up by the end, and found out alot of things she never would have guessed about Sean.
Trust Me definitely kick-started this series, it's fastpaced, cute, and as you read you see how the main character grows and matures. I definitely recommend it to all girls above 10.

An interesting take on mothers and their daughters. Alot of it was common sense knowledge in my opinion. Worth a quick read.
Thinking Before you React- A Helpful Guide to Parenting.......2002-03-24
This book is full of wise, useable, pro-active strategies for taxed parents. Excellent ways for planning and executing conversations about sex, peer related delemas, body-image problems, and discipline for the modern teen are available in this book. It is easy to read a chapter at a time, as various issues arise, and there are many comforting examples of mothers who have gone before you. Even reading the examples of what NOT TO SAY to your teenage daughter in response to various provocations, was very helpful. With all of the difficult moment to moment choices that mothers are forced to confront, it helps to have thought these issues out and taken them apart. The most helpful parenting concept I learned while reading this book is that it is vital to ponder and contain many thoughts and feelings, before reacting, when coping with a teenager. In an astute, good-humored, sympathetic fashion, Roni Cohen-Sandler offers us plenty to consider along the way.

Another Great Story of Two Sisters and Their Fate-A+++.......2005-08-12
Lesley Pearse wrote another goody in this story of two sisters. Dulcie Taylor, and May her younger sister were raised in an orphanage by nuns who were as cruel as it gets. They were sent there from the time they were very young because their father murdered their mother and was sent to prison.
Dulcie was the more sensitive sister, and May the more charming one, knew how to work the nuns to get her way. When they were sent to Austrailia to another orphanage, knowing it would be better there, it was anything but that. The nuns worked the girls like slaves, and the least little incidents were very severely punished. May was the favored one, but there were secrets there no one knew about until much later.
Dulcie found jobs much later when she was old enough to leave the orphanage. She was treated shamefully in her first job as servant to the Masters, and finally after about 2 years could stand it no longer. From there she found a loving family who loved her like one of their daughters. It was at that time she met Ross, a boy who also grew up in an orphanage and was very embittered by that. The two of them got married eventually, but it was not a good thing.
Dulcie connects with where May is when a letter arrives. Feeling she must find her sister, she leaves for Sydney, and finds that May has turned to a life of prostitution and stealing, which she had done all along. And another shocking thing was that May had had a baby she couldn't take care of. So when Dulcie finds the terrible state of neglect the child, Noel, was in, she manages to take him into her care. The child's father Rudie gets custody of Noel, and eventually, he and Dulcie fall in love and the chips will fall where they may there.
The book is a bit lengthy and has many details. It is impossible to go into each one of them here, so I have mainly summarized the story. It is very worthwhile reading, and Pearse is one of the best!

Action & Steamy Passion!.......2006-07-23
Dominic Steele works with his brothers in their security company, Steele Security. His current job has him traveling to the Caribbean to a small island called San Timoteo to save a woman locked in a prison there. This mission is basically routine for him, except for the fact that the woman he is hired to extricate is an old lover. Lilah Cantrell broke his heart ten years ago.
Lilah has not seen Dominic in ten years so watching him being dragged into the cell adjoining hers is a shock. She realizes that Dominic has come to save her, which is a huge relief. She can't deny that she is still attracted to him but she doesn't want him to know. Dominic is having the same reaction. His traitorous desire for Lilah can't get in the way of his mission though. His intention is to get her out and then to get away from her.
Dominic always thought of Lilah as a snob but she is quickly proving him wrong. She is capable and tough. Lilah realizes after spending just a few minutes with Dominic that she never really got over him. Being thrust in a dangerous situation has them depending on each other and that closeness brings forth their true feelings.
Between getting themselves to safety and sorting out their feelings for each other, Dominic and Lilah are kept very busy. Dominic still plans to leave Lilah behind when and if they are out of danger, but Lilah has other plans. She has no intention of repeating the mistakes she made in the past and if they can get to safety, she plans to convince Dominic of the same.
Trust Me is a terrific romance! Dominic's searing masculinity and handsome good looks make it impossible not to want him. Lilah is courageous and beautiful. I love stories about rekindled love. Trust Me combines action, steamy passion and tender romance to create a story that captivated me. I really enjoyed it, and I am equally as excited to read more in the Men Of Steele series!

adventure romance at it's best!.......2006-02-24
I've read Caroline Cross for years, and can say without a doubt that Trust Me is one of her strongest stories. Cross has a flair for writing adventure (and for getting her research right!). Most importantly, she writes women like we really are - strong, complicated and the tiniest bit vulnerable. As I read this book, I truly felt like I was in the jungle with Dominic and Lilah; I fell in love with both of them and I was left desperate for more when the book ended. (Whoever is limiting Cross to 200 pages is doing us all a disservice!) This is a wonderful story and an absolute blast to read - you'll love every minute of the adventure!
