The surgeon-as-rock-star mystique seems like it must have come straight out of Hollywood, but the myth had to begin more concretely. A good candidate is Minnesota's Dr. Walt Lillehei, the hard-working, hard-playing father of open-heart surgery, whose life is told in garish color in King of Hearts by journalist G. Wayne Miller. From his early brilliance, recovery from deadly lymphatic cancer, and dramatic repair of seemingly hopeless heart cases to the disintegration of his career at its peak thanks to an army of personal enemies and conviction on tax evasion counts, his story is consistently surprising and engaging. Fast cars, hard drinking, and plenty of women filled his time when he wasn't turning lives around with a few strokes of his scalpel, and the reader will find the surgeon's actions almost unbelievable--rarely endearing, but occasionally saintly. Combining this melodramatic biography with the fascinating story of the struggle for open-heart surgery, considered impossible little more than a generation ago, Miller makes a compelling case that the daring scientist was simply another side of the arrogant, absent-minded playboy. No ordinary biography, King of Hearts is breathless reading--you'll find yourself surfacing every few chapters to remind yourself its nonfiction. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Few of the great stories of medicine are as palpably dramatic as the invention of open-heart surgery, yet, until now, no journalist has ever brought all of the thrilling specifics of this triumph to life.
This is the story of the surgeon many call the father of open-heart surgery, Dr. C. Walton Lillehei, who, along with colleagues at University Hospital in Minneapolis and a small band of pioneers elsewhere, accomplished what many experts considered to be an impossible feat: He opened the heart, repaired fatal defects, and made the miraculous routine.
Acclaimed author G. Wayne Miller draws on archival research and exclusive interviews with Lillehei and legendary pioneers such as Michael DeBakey and Christiaan Barnard, taking readers into the lives of these doctors and their patients as they progress toward their landmark achievement. In the tradition of works by Richard Rhodes and Tracy Kidder,
King of Hearts tells the story of an important and gripping piece of forgotten science history.

Inspired me to want to know more!.......2007-09-23
When a friend gave me this book to read, I thought I'd skim a few chapters and either get bored with the technical details or be bothered by them since I have had heart surgery for congenital heart defects myself.
I thumbed though the first chapter and I was hooked! The writing demonstrates the intensity found in intense pediatric cases very well and uses that and the determination of Dr. Lillehei to move the story along at a fast clip. I finished it in about 36 hours!
I had gotten to the point there I was trying to take care of myself well as an adult with congenital heart disease (treated defects), but I hadn't quite grasped the details of my own surgeries nor did I want to. After I read this book I ordered my surgical records immediately and was excited to read them! The book filled the descriptions of the surgeries with such excitement that it carried over into my own personal education about my health.
I like how they told the story of Dr. Lillehei as a person who did great things, but was also human being as much as his patients - with faults of his own - but also clearly, great gifts.
For more information about the long-term outcome of patients with congenital heart defects/disease and how we continue to lead the longest and healthiest lives possible for us, please visit the Adult Congenital Heart Association's website at www.achaheart.org
Excellent and interresting through and through.......2007-05-12
Once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down. What a fascinating subject and such wonderful storyteller. From the mom of a "heart baby" it just amazes me how far we've come in such a short amount of time.
One star deducted for his incredible unlikability.......2006-03-23
It's a good story, and Dr. Lillehei blazed an amazing trail, but this man appeared to be a sociopath who destroyed everything and everybody he touched - except, of course, his patients. I can't believe nobody addressed this yet, or maybe they were so fascinated by the story that they missed - or dismissed - it completely. This was more than a massive ego; this guy could have been a Dr. Swango had things been just a wee bit different.
I realize the book was about Dr. C. Walton Lillehei, but his brother Richard was also a transplant surgeon, as are his sons Craig and Kevin.
Better than Best.......2004-03-26
When I read the first paragraph of this book, I was engrossed! I started to read it for a report. It gave plenty of information, and was extremely interesting. You feel like you are in the operating room. I affects your emotion. I highly recommend this book!
A Very Moving Book.......2002-12-09
As I read this book, I was profoundly moved. I was was born with a ASD & pulmonary valve defect. Dr Richard Varco and Lellehei did my surgery At the Variety Club Heart hospital in 1955 . I was one of the 1st one hundred surgeries done at the U of Minn. What incredable dedication , hard work, these men had. In my early twenties, I again needed heart surgery. This time again a very brillent, dedicated surgeon by the name of U Scott Page did a total correction.I have been able to live a wonderful. active life thanks the The King of Heart and team and Dr Page. I owe my life to the many, many dogs used to perfect progress of open heart surgery. I am a nurse, I have cared for many open heart patients. Thank you Dr Varco, Dr Lillehei and Dr S Page

4.5 stars...Romance and Adventure Abound.......2007-05-07
If you like your romances mixed with lots of adventure,as I do, "Maverick Heart" by Joan Johnston is for you . Although it is the second in the Maverick Heart series, you do not have to have read the 1st in the series, a romance set in England 100 years ago, "The Inheritance". There are 2 couples followed in "Maverick Heart", Lord and Lady Linden(Miles and Verity), who we met just briefly in Inheritance, and their son Rand, now 21, and his fiance Lady Winifred.
The story of Miles and Verity goes back to London of 1853. The young lovers are star crossed as a rich suitor, Lord Talbot, blackmails Verity into marriage by threatening the life of her true love Miles. Miles doesn't know the circumstances behind the reason Verity dumped him and carries the bitterness with him for more then 20 years. He also doesn't know that Verity gave birth to his son, after her marriage to Lord Talbot, who shunned his wife and step-son throughout the 20 years.
Flash forward to the Wyoming Territory of 1875. Verity and son Rand are making the trek across the treacherous terrain along with Rand's fiance, the young and feisty Freddie(Lady Winifred), to make anew life at the only thing Talbot left them, a ranch. It's not long before one adventure after another, buffalo stampedes, Indians, the harsh weather, and other bad guys, have them fighting for their lives. It's also not long before Lady Talbot is rescued by her former love Miles, who fled England 20 years earlier and made his home Wyoming and has become a full fledged cowboy. A cowboy with a plan. Revenge on Verity.
With plenty of steamy romance, and terrifying adventures, this full length novel will have you turning the pages. The stories of both couples is equally captivating. Ms. Johnston as always will take you away to another time and place and get you involved with the character's stories as their love grows, and they develop wonderfully . She also seems to do her research well to bring an authentic look at the time and place. This one is no exception, although I was kind of surprised that the Sioux Indian was portrayed as such a villain, without giving us much of their side of the story and their life. In some of her other stories("Comanche Woman"), that I've read involving American Indians, I felt she gave a better look at the the life they led in the old west. Other then that I thought this was a great western/romance/adventure.
I haven't figured out yet which is the next up in this series (if there is a next), but when I do, I will edit this review and/or leave a comment in the comment section. If anyone out there knows, please leave a comment...thanks
Meanwhile I will be continuing with the Hawk's Way novellas, the historical novels, and plan to delve into the Captive Heart series soon.

great storyline.......2005-04-16
potential for really great book but it never quite got there. Turned out to be pretty standard fare. The characters however were really great that I wish they had been more developed. The only part of the book which I thoroughly disliked was that after "freddy" was raped, her new husband Rand sought to "cure" her by persisting in his wedding night. None of that dialogue reflected any understanding of how to treat a rape victim. shame on you, ms johnston.
A Four Star Read!.......2004-03-14
Before you read Maverick Hearts, read The Inheritance prequel. Verity, The Maverick Heart heroine is connected to The Inheritance characters and will give you a broader background view. I would have liked to learn more about Freddy and her story, perhaps another book about her would have made a great series.
Fun!.......2002-12-08
All her books are good and this was full of humor and romance. It kept me turning pages as did, "Anything, My Love" by Cynthia Simmons--a book I HAD TO READ ALL IN ONE NIGHT.
"Great Read".......2001-10-27
After reading previous reviews on this book I was very sorry I had bought it. But since I had it, I thought I would give it a shot. I am so glad I did! I throughly enjoyed this story. Not only was the story about the two main characters, but their son and his fiancee. She made me laugh throughout the book. This was money well spent!

Lindsey McKenna's A MAN WITH A MISSION is one fast and exciting novel. It provides the reader with a rich description of the mysterious land of Peru.
Captain Jake Travers has learned his sister has been captured by notorious drug dealers who are holding her hostage in the dark jungles of Peru. He seeks the aid of a special operations force and is shocked to discover he will be required to work with a female Apache helicopter pilot, Lieutenant Ana Cortina. He is unprepared in his first meeting with Ana, not only is she highly trained, she is also beautiful.
Lieutenant Ana Cortina, born and raised in Peru, joined the army to help rid her country of the drug activities which plagued her country. She is determined to help return it to the once safe environment she remembers as a child. Accepting a special operations mission to work with Captain Jake Travers, she finds herself forced to prove her skills. Unexpectedly she also finds herself wanting to give her heart to Jake. She realizes that pursuing this love is fruitless because once Jake finds his sister he will return to North America, or will he?
Ana and Jake are both portrayed as strong characters. Being on an equal level it is hard for either of them to admit their true feelings. Both share a common tragic experience of losing the loves of their life. Their loss and common careers enhance the building foundation of their relationship. This is the first Heart of Mercenaries series I have read. I was very impressed and look forward to reviewing the other stories in the series.
Another hit by McKenna.......2001-03-04
Another great read in the Morgan's Mercenaries series. It's set in the exotic location of Peru where the indomitable Maya Stevenson runs an all women covert ops squad against the local drug traffickers. Hunky Jake Travers goes there to rescue his kidnapped kid sister - and guess what? Falls in love with one of Maya's valkyrie chopper pilots. I loved the location and the smattering of local customs and color from around the Macchu Picchu area. Jake is torn between his feelings of chivalry for his guide and commanding officer Lieutenant Ana Lucia Cortina and his need to rescue his sister from dangerous drug runners. A lot of the interest in this book revolves around the tension between the sex role stereotypes that Jake is burdened with and the realities that he has to face in the field. McKenna shows how women can retain their femininity and still be top combat soldiers. At the same time, Jake struggles with his own feelings and how to express them. It would be nice to think that there were really North American men out there as sensitive to other cultures and feminist issues as this tough ranger. I'm looking forward to the forthcoming novel about Maya.
Very highly recommended!.......2001-02-16
Part of the Maverick Hearts miniseries by Linday McKenna, MAN WITH A MISSION is a heart pounding, heart-stopping novel of danger and love.
They have a mission, a life to find and save. Captain Jake Travers' sister is missing. She traveled to the jungles of Peru to a small village to help them sink wells. Sixty percent of their children were dying before the age of ten from drinking bad water. Talia Travers dreams of saving the children, little realizing the risk to herself. Kidnapped by a drug lord, Tal becomes the pawn of dangerous game that Jake intends to end.
Against his better judgement, Jake accepts the aid of Lieutenant Ana Cortina, a woman that is part of the Black Jaguar squadron that fights the influx of Columbia drugs. His traditional beliefs don't allow for a woman to lead this kind of deadly mission, and he has serious misgivings. But Jake needs a guide that knows the path, the people, and the languages that will lead to saving his sister.
Jake makes Ana feel safe in a world gone mad. She makes Jake long for things he doesn't dare dream of. As they walk the path through the Rainbow Valley, Jake finds himself filled with both terror and joy. Terror for the safety of his beloved sister. Joy to be with this extraordinary woman. Despite their cultural differences, they have much in common, placing family, parents, land and heritage ahead all other things.
Although she calls herself a warrior, Jake comes to understand she's also a sensual woman, with powerful religious beliefs and a profound connection to the land. As his heart becomes further involved, he also hopes she might become a wife and mother. Somehow he must learn to reconcile the warrior with the woman. And somehow, when the mission ends, they must find a way to be together. But the farmlands of Iowa are a long way from the Peruvian jungle.
With a powerful narrative voice and a marvelous imaginative flair, McKenna presents the clash of culture and ideals in this memorable tale. Very highly recommended.
Man With A Mission a Winner!.......2001-02-06
Another "out of the park home run" from romantic adventure novelist Lindsay McKenna! I really enjoyed this book. Ana and Jake were a fantastic romanctic couple, intense, believable, and meant for each other. The action in the novel is top-notch, as we've come to expect from Ms. McKenna, one of the few romantic adventure authors who can write authentically about "edge of your seat" expeditions and make you feel as if you're there in the middle of the action. But as always, the adventure is balanced by the well-done, tender, emotional story of two souls in search of love. I look forward to the next in the line of Morgan's Mercenarys novels...it won't come too soon for me.
Exvciting romantic thriller.......2001-01-27
One day after resigning his commission as an officer with the Army Rangers, Jake Travers performs the impossible and breaches Morgan's impregnable headquarters in Montana. Jake asks Morgan for help to rescue his sister, Talia, a hydrologist working with the Que'ro Indians in Peru. Her employer, the legitimate non-profit Wiraquocha Foundation, informed Jake that his sister is missing and probably kidnapped. Since Morgan has no one available to accompany Jake, he calls an American soldier working in Peru, trading helicopters for a guide who knows the Rainbow Valley where Tal was last seen.
Jake has problems with his guide being a woman, even though Morgan vouches for Lieutenant Ana Cortina. However, she is his only hope of rescuing Tal. In Peru, Jake quickly becomes impressed with Ana's abilities to survive the dangers that threaten them. As he reassesses his thoughts on the capabilities of women, Jake and Ana fall in love, but they still have a deadly mission to survive.
The latest Lindsay McKenna's "Morgan's Mercenaries" novel is an interesting work of romantic suspense with a twist as neither the hero nor the heroine work for the Perseus group. The story line is fast-paced and very descriptive, especially the remote areas of Peru. Jake is a great character because his macho beliefs make Ana the wrong person for him. Ana is a brave individual who proves women can serve in combat. MAN WITH A MISSION is a strong entry in one of the better ongoing romantic suspense series of the past few years.

Captain Thane Hamilton is sent with five men to Bolivia to rescue the fourteen-year-old daughter of a US Senator. Tragically, he is wounded when he tries to stop a rocket launcher from aiming its deadly missile at an approaching Apache helicopter. When he awakes, he is shocked to learn he was the only member that survived. Grieving for his lost comrades, he also finds he is fighting to save his leg from a likely amputation. His only chance of saving his leg is to be transferred to his hometown Sedona, AZ where he will have to face the unfinished business he left behind when he joined the Marine Corp. Will he have the courage to return, face and conquer them?
When Paige Black learns her newest patient is Thane Hamilton, she is thrilled of the opportunity to help Thane get back on his feet. Secretly she has always had a crush on Thane ever since they first met in high school. What she doesn't anticipate is the conflict that surrounds Thane and his mother. She hopes not only to help Thane physically but also to help him mentally put the past behind him. Her greatest fear is once Thane is recovered he will return to his military career and leave the past and her far behind.
A MAN ALONE started with a fast-moving action packed novel I have grown to expect from Lindsay McKenna. Unfortunately, once the hero was wounded, the story started to slow down considerably. The heroine was portrayed as a wonderful strong woman determined to help heal the man she loved. Although this book was somewhat of a disappointment, it will not detour me on my quest to seek out and read other Mercenaries Series books.
A real page turner!.......2001-02-18
The novel starts with a great opening scene - signature McKenna military action, involving men and women in a combat scenario. Then, the action moves on to an emotional level. The blurb about a wounded war hero going home to convalesce may not sound particularly exciting - but in fact, it's an emotional roller coaster. McKenna deals with a lot of issues that are all too real: abuse in military families, domestic violence, racial tension, family feuds, couples problems in coordinating two careers. She shows how love can heal the most difficult problems, and in that sense, its a very optimistic book. The love scenes are dealt with sensitively, and always are an integral part of the characters emotional unfoldment. I just had to keep reading to find out how Thane, Paige and Judy would resolve their issues. McKenna explodes the myth that strong men don't cry and shows how the "quiet heros" in life, whether men or women, can be just as courageous as the more celebrated heroes. NB: if you buy this book in a shop, don't be put off by the cover art. By the end, I could see why it was chosen (a picture of a young man in a denim shirt and cowboy hat) - but it doesn't give much indication of the emotional depth of the book.
promising, but I wasn't satisfied.......2001-02-03
Returned to the states and provided the best care possible, Thane spends weeks recovering in Sedona, Arizona. Thane harbors great resentment toward his mother. As a child, Thane idolized his father. When his parents divorced and his mother forced him to move to a ranch in Arizona, Thane was left feeling imprisoned. As soon as he turned eighteen, Thane escaped to the marines, rising through the ranks quickly. Now all his goals are a risk, along with his leg.
Thane's mother arranges excellent nursing care. Coincidentally, Paige Black was a high school acquaintance. Despite distant, yet mutual, admiration, the young people had never been close, but as adults they are delighted to be thrown together. Paige fears growing too close, however, because Thane is determined to save his leg, recover, and return to his life in the marines.
While A MAN ALONE has a terrific hook in the beginning, I felt disappointed with the plot which seemed to be handled rather superficially. The heroine wastes a great deal of time on self-esteem issues without displaying a temperament to have overcome her past or win the man she loves. Nevertheless, if you've been entertained by this author's books in the past, you will probably enjoy this one as well. Further, the backdrop of Native American Indians should be of special interest to those who like reading about matters Indian.
A Man Alone.......2000-11-23
Loved this book. A wounded warrior. Wounded inside and out, physicaly and spiritually, meets a woman who can help him heal. But will he allow her to get close enough to help? She also has her hidden wounds. Skillfully woven story.

THE 5TH AND FINAL STORY OF THE HAMPTONS!.......2002-10-28
This book contains the final story of the O'Neill/Hampton saga.
Seth Hampton was met in the [original HH Christmas stories 1990] and reprinted in THE SOLDIER and THE REBEL along with his brother Rafe Hampton.
Seth had love the girl, Blythe who loved Rafe, so he bowed out and headed West away from Virginia. All he wanted was peace from the horrors of war. And to lose his nightmares.
He wanted to hook up with a wagon train heading west, but the people voted against having a southerner in their midst. The wagonmaster wanted to include Seth because he was a doctor.
The only way he would be allowed to join was if Kate MacAllister and her brothers, nineteen year old Jeremy and 12 year old Nick would include him as their driver.
Jeremy had suffered in a Confederate prison and Kate had lost her two older brothers and a fiance in the war - her mother died of a broken heart and her father soon after. NO she was not having anything to do with a southern rebel. Doctor or not.
There was an attraction growing between Seth and Kate which both fought, knowing it would only lead to heartache. And Seth couldn't stand many more rejections.
Read about Nick's almost instant friendship with Seth and how Jeremy grew to admire him and how Kate came to love him. Such an inspiring and wonderful story of healing of the hearts. And Kate's devotion to healing Seth's wounds of the body.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - another keeper for the bookshelf.

Another Great Morgan's Mercenaries Story.......2000-08-08
This is a beautiful love story of two very lonely people. Arianna Worthington is driven to complete her deceased mother's dream of drawing the many different orchids that grow in the Amazon jungle, then getting the drawings published in a book. But Ari is a shy, insecure young woman who must stand up to her powerful father in order to take that trip to the dangerous jungles of Brazil. She finds the strength to defy her father enough so that he enlists the aid of Morgan Trayhern, owner of Perseus, who can provide Ari with a bodyguard while she goes on what he considers a worthless trip.
Trayhern has just the man Arianna needs - Rafe Antonio, a backwoodsman and ranger in the Amazon jungle who can get her in to find the orchids and keep her safe. Rafe is a highly educated man, who defied his own powerful and wealthy father when it came to what he wanted to do with his life. Instead of taking over the family's vast banking industry, he has chosen to live in the jungle and help protect the rain forest and natives from the greed of the drug lords, miners and loggers.
Thus begins an exciting journey for both Rafe, who thought he would never find someone with the same capacity to love the jungle that he has, and Ari, who needs to learn to spread her wings and fly.
I loved the story of Rafe and Arianna itself, but I also gained quite an education on the sheer greed and brutality of the drug lords against the natives of the jungle. The story really brings to light what is happening in the rain forest. This is the first of a series of three. but is also the continuing saga of Morgan Trayhern and his mercenaries. I highly recommend the book.
Power and beauty.......2000-07-29
I loved this book. It's unlike anything else I have read, and that's a definite plus. Its power and beauty make it a must buy. The hero and heroine, Rafe and Ari, are full-blown characters with depth and feeling. The storyline is exciting and makes you wish you were there! I can't wait until the secondary character, Inca, shows up in her own book, due out in August. I hope everyone gives Man of Passion a read...you will be so glad you did.
Man Of Passion.......2000-07-19
Linsay, Is the most fantastic writer. I have read all she has had published so far. Rafe is the best. He just is the most exciting man. He's not sure he wants to help Ari, He soon discovers how different she really is and how much alike the two of them are. You can feel the desire Ari has to fulfill her dream of drawing the orchids and showing what she can do. Rafe has a friend Inca comes to help when he is called away. This book can not be put down til the very end and you want to read more and more of Morgan's Men. I can't wait for Inca's Story. Manof Pasion is a keeper.
Wonderful Work Again........2000-07-11
The story centering around Rafe and Ari in his jungle was excellent. I was gratefull to see the maturing of Ari in a smooth story line. Many of the stories we read today just jump right into the characters as full blown individuals. We don't know who they really are. In this story, the characters fully developed within the storyline. It was a no stop reading marathon for me. I enjoyed it to its fullest.
Very Good.......2000-07-10
Arianna Worthington wants to travel to the Amazon to study and draw orchids. It was a dream she shared with her dying mother. Now Ari is ready to face her domineering father for a chance to go. Unbeknownst to her, her father has arranged for a special mercenary to guide and protect her. Rafe Antonio is a wonderful hero. He is tall, strong, honorable, protective, handsome, intelligent...have I forgotten anything? He sounds almost to perfect to like and yet he is very likeable, compassionate, and lonely. Arianna, on the other hand, has little self-confidence. She is introverted and delicate, but also creative, joyful and loving. It takes Rafes strength and confidence to help Ari find herself. She also has help from Inca, (a great character from previous Mckenna stories) who is an extremely powerful woman. Rafe finds in Ari, someone who feels the same wonder and joy he does about the Amazon rainforest. There is great emotion between these two, NOT just lust. Another terrific story by Lindsay Mckenna!
