Book Description
I am Princess Meredith, heir to a throne of faerie. My day job, once upon a time, was as a private detective in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, princess has now become a full-time occupation.
My aunt, Queen Andais, will have it no other way. And so I am virtually a prisoner in faerie–trapped here with some of the realm’s most beautiful men to serve as my bodyguards . . . and my lovers. For I am compelled to conceive a child: an heir to succeed me on the throne. Yet after months of amazing sex with my consorts, there is still no baby. And no baby means no throne. The only certainty is death at the hands of my cousin Cel, or his followers, if I fail to conceive.
Now Mistral, Queen Andais’s new captain of the guard, has come to my bed–defying her and risking her terrible wrath in doing so. But even she will hesitate to punish him in jealous rage, because our joining has reawakened old magic, mystical power so ancient that no one stands against it and survives. Not even my strongest and most favored: my Darkness and my Killing Frost. Not even Mistral himself, my Storm Lord. But because Mistral has helped to bring this magic forth, he may live another day.
If I can reclaim control of the fey power that once was, there may be hope for me and my reign in faerie. I might yet quell the dark schemes and subterfuges surrounding me. Though shadows of obsession and conspiracy gather, I may survive.

More like a chapter than a book...give us more!.......2007-10-06
Time continues to move at glacial speed in Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series. Mistral's Kiss occupies such a brief time that I felt dissatisfied at the end. I mean, Merry only has sex twice...or is that three times? Luckily the latest installment is just around the corner.
The Merry Gentry series is one that you should begin from the beginning with A Kiss of Shadows (Meredith Gentry Novels). You will be frustrated and confused if you don't.
In Mistral's Kiss, Merry has an opportunity to consummate the powerful attraction she and Queen's guard Mistral experienced in A Kiss of Shadows. Merry's sidhe powers continue to grow through expressing her sexual energy, and it's even hinted that she may be becoming less mortal (if this isn't like being "a little pregnant"). Speaking of being pregnant, this is Mission #1 for Merry, and since this need drives most of the plot tension, it's not a spoiler that doesn't seem to become pregnant in this book either. Although it's not clear if Faerie relies on home pregnancy tests or something more mystical for early detection.
In Mistral's Kiss we get more understanding of the court of the Sluagh and its powers. Sholto, King of the Sluagh makes another appearance and gets a chance to collect on Merry's commitment to him.
Merry's fans will enjoy this book but will find it unsatisfying. Perhaps Ms. Hamilton is stretched thin between two active series. I look forward to A Lick of Frost (Meredith Gentry, Book 6)and hope for more!
My second favorite Merry book, though not necessarily strong enough to stand alone.......2007-10-02
Mistral's Kiss is by far the best Meredith Gentry book I've read in awhile. True, it doesn't necessarily have the depth and plot to be considered as its own story, and is more a continuation of where we left off in A Stroke of Midnight, but I must give Hamilton credit for actually making this story go somewhere finally. The first Meredith Gentry book, A Kiss of Shadows, did an excellent job of world building and making me interested in Merry. Books 2 and 3 (A Caress of Twilight and Seduced by Moonlight) were more a session in "Faerie Court Politics for Dummies" than an actual continuation of the storyline; and then we have book 4, where the story finally began to progress and I could stop hearing about Merry's background and start seeing her get down to business.
In that same vein, Mistral's Kiss continues with the story of Merry and her merry men getting down and dirty to bring the Unseelie Sithen back to life, though most of the sex in this book wasn't even of the sort that would get her on the Unseelie throne. Still, some of my favorite characters, Sholto, the Lord of That Which Passes Between, and Mistral, the new captain of Queen Andais's guard, are featured prominently in this book and give me a break from listening to Galen being clueless and Frost pouting all the time. In fact, Mistral's Kiss is a breath of fresh air in a series that had become a bit stifling in its monotony. I finished this book in only four hours, and just in time since it's only three weeks until book 6 (A Lick of Frost) makes its debut in bookstores. And after the way this one ended I can hardly wait to see what's next in this series. I can only hope that book 6 keeps furthering the plot and doesn't take us back to that stagnant place where we're just waiting for something to happen, with Merry have needless sex while we do it.
The Sithen Rejuvenated.......2007-09-15
Mistral's Kiss (2006) is the fifth fantasy novel of the Meredith Gentry series, following A Stroke of Midnight. In the previous volume, the sithen began to respond to Merry's implicit requests. The long lost ambiance of meadows and forest under a sunlit sky manifested within the faery mound. Such power was supposed to signify the rightful ruler of the sithen.
Queen Andais began to accept the unsuitability of her son as the proper ruler of the Unseelie. As she began to admit his faults, others came forward with other defects. At the same time, she was forced to admit that Merry lacked such flaws.
In this novel, Merry is having strange dreams. Of course, most dreams are strange, but these seem to have some message to her from the god and goddess. Then she wakes up with a horn cup in her hand. Her guards even seem to recognize it.
When a tear drops into the cup, a deep gold liquid bubbles up and fills the cup to the brim. Merry offers the cup of horn to Abe and he drinks it down. Then he falls back and appears to be sound asleep. Yet when Merry calls his name, Abe sits up, laughs, kisses her and starts loving her.
In the middle of this coupling, Mistral enters the room abruptly and literally falls onto Merry. He is trying to disengage himself when brightly colored patterns begin appearing on the bodies of the guards. Then Merry notices that they are no longer in the bedroom, but within the dead gardens.
Queen Andais breaks into the gardens and interrupts the action. Yet a stray breeze diverts her from the usual rant and she sees signs of rejuvenation in the dead space. She is so startled that she leaves Mistral with Merry to continue the sexual coupling.
In this story, Merry is able to restore life to the gardens, but has trouble leaving the underground space. She and the guards end up within the Slaugh dead gardens with several irate Night Hags and other such threatening them. Then she has sex with King Sholto and the Slaugh garden also blooms.
A side effect of this renewal is the intrusion of white marble into the dark corridors of the Unseelie mound. The torture chamber gains white walls and floors. Flower gardens appear in places where they have not been before. Queen Andais begins to fear that her mound will become an example of Seelie chic.
This story has more sex in the opening chapters than any of the previous books. Obviously, the sexual magic generated by Merry is driving the rejuvenations. However, the plot only begins to widen out from an orgy in the ninth chapter, when Merry and her guards try to leave the renewed gardens. The story diverges even further after the renewal of the Slaugh garden, with the wild hunt chasing Merry, her guards and even King Sholto.
The story also features some exotic forms of violence. Swords and projected magic are not evident until the final chapters, but blood flows from the very beginning. But so does magical healing.
The magical renewal of these dead gardens is not explained in this volume. The fertility rites are foreshadowed in Merry's dream, but the purpose is never revealed. Maybe this dangling ribbon will be explored in the next installment.
Recommended for Hamilton fans and for anyone else who enjoys exotic sex, fertility magic and divine manipulations.

I like LKH but I feel something was missing.......2007-08-23
I really like LKH's books don't get me wrong but this one did seam to be lacking something. Normally in her books she has this amazing chapter that reminds me why I like them and take time to read them. The chapter is normally interesting and all about the fairy people and their history or something like that. But in this book there was no chapter like that. It was a little like LKH had a outline of what should happen in each on of her books and just filled things in. You know: Merry has sex with at least 4 guys, The Queen get angry, Someone gets hurt, Something strange happens with sex location and so on with the rest of the normal things that show up. I just felt lost and like there should be more to most of the book..
This time, the author gives us only half a book, and no plot advancement.......2007-08-20
I really enjoyed the first four books of this series, but book 5 annoyed me, because it's way too short (just over 200 pages), and it only covers perhaps a half day of real time in the story ... during which very little in the way of plot advancement happens.
Don't get me wrong - the erotica's equally on par with all that's occured in the first four books ... but erotica is not enough. There needs to be some plot advancement !
I feel like the author has deliberately slowed down the pace of her story, and has fobbed off only half a novel on her readers ... and charged them full price for it. Although enjoyable to read, I felt very cheated. I'd wait til this one comes out in used paperback ... this one isn't worth full price, much less hardcover prices.
Book Description
Wulf is an ancient Viking warrior with a useful but extremely aggravating power-amnesia. No one who meets him in person can remember him 5 minutes later. It makes it easy to have one-night stands, but hard to have a meaningful relationship, and without true love he can never regain his soul. When he finally meets Cassandra, the one woman who can remember him, she turns out to be the princess of the cursed race he's sworn to hunt-and forbidden to him. The two of them must face ancient curses, prophecies, and the direct meddling of the Greek gods to find true happiness at last.

Made me queesy rather than hot.......2007-09-30
I had read "Fantasy Lover" and "Night Pleasures" and loved both of them so much that I decided to try "Kiss of the Night" this time. While all of Kenyon's books are a bit absurd dealing with devastatingly handsome, yet troubled men who amazingly can't find anyone to love them except rather plain average women.... they were still hot smoldering romances with a fun plot thrown in for good measure. When I read the premise behind "kiss of the night" I thought that it would be a bit more of them same perhaps. Not so. Kenyon really got caught up in her world with this one and while I found some of the new information about Apollites and Daimons interesting, I also found the romance in the book suffering because of it. There were just too many lenghty gaps between Wulf and Cassandra's meetings that were filled with tedious information. I am also not into vampires per se. I enjoyed Buffy the Vampire Slayer but am not someone that finds bloodsucking erotic or sexy. I find it disgusting and was disappointed that there was so much of it in this book. While "Night Pleasures" had been about Daimons and Dark Hunters it never had descriptive scenes of bloodsucking. When the main characters finally resort to it in this book, I thought that I was going to be sick. Rather than a fun, humourous story filled with smartmouthed characters and moments that touch you. This book took itself way too seriously for my taste and quenched any heat or romance that I had received from previous books. This is not going to be a keeper for me.
Walk Silently While Being Mystified.......2007-04-27
Taken into a world that will mystify you to the last, readers will be shocked to find out that they really did not know a great deal about Diamons and Apollites and they are much more complex than the Dark-hunters were ever allowed to believe. Wulf Tryggvasen, a Viking warrior which no one remembers five minutes after they met him, which seems to be fine with him because he always has the best one night stands and no complicated relationships. However, that was before he met Cassandra Peters, a princess who has the destruction of the earth on her conscience; if she dies the rest of the world dies with her. I thought that it was an awe inspiring book with quite a few surprises set in between the pages!
A weaker link to the series ?.......2007-03-09
SK has a wonderful concept with the Dark Hunter series, but this is not one of better reads. I enjoyed Dance with the Devil so much more. I couldn't fully immerse myself in the attraction between Wulf and Cassandra and struggled with it throughout the story. The physical attraction is hot, but I couldn't understand how sworn enemies could become soul mates. This book has some emotional parts and some good secondary characters are introduced. There is a reunion of sorts between Wulf, Ash, and the four previous Dark Hunters. Simi also returns for a brief appearance.
This book is important to the series; however, because it explains more about the different Daimons, Apollites, and other creatures in the realm.
Really dissapointed.......2007-02-12
Not my favorite at all.The characters were good and the details about the Damons and Apollites were interesting, but I guess I was expecting more from the book. I don't have kids, so the whole having-wild-sex-while-pregnant is a little bit disturbing, at least for me. Consider yourself warned.
kiss of the night.......2007-01-10
one of my top 3 series I am reading currently - if you love vampire books this is a great series.

Laurell K. Hamilton revitalized vampires, werewolves, and zombies in the popular Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books. In this new series, she updates faeries. A Kiss of Shadows introduces Merry Gentry, a.k.a. Meredith NicEssus, a faerie princess of the Unseelie Court, where politics is a blood sport. Merry, who's part sidhe (elvish), part brownie, and part human, never really fit in. She's short, not skilled in offensive magic, and mortal because of her human blood. These are real liabilities when your family, especially aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, is out to kill you. Merry has been in hiding for three years, living in Los Angeles and working for the Grey Detective Agency, which specializes in "supernatural problems, magical solutions." A new case sets her against a man who uses forbidden magic to seduce fey women and drain their power. A plan to trap him goes awry and Merry's cover is blown. Now Andais knows where she is. But things have changed in Andais's court, and Merry is changing too.
Despite the selkies, brownies, goblins, and ogres in this book, it's not for children. The fey are "creatures of the senses"--and in the Unseelie court, sex and pain go together. Merry is sexually adventurous and surrounded by gorgeous, powerful males, most of whom want her badly. She's politically savvy and no coward, though she's not the warrior Anita is. Hamilton fans and readers of adult fairy tales like Anne Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy will want to give Merry a look. --Nona Vero

But now the Queen’s assassin has been dispatched to fetch her back–whether she likes it or not. Suddenly Meredith finds herself a pawn in her dreaded aunt’s plans. The job that awaits her: enjoy the constant company of the most beautiful immortal men in the world. The reward: the crown–and the opportunity to continue to live. The penalty for failure: death.
Download Description
All it would take was my true name being mentioned after dark, and it would float back to my aunt. She was the Queen of Air and Darkness, and that meant that anything said in the dark was hers to hear, eventually. The fact that spotting the missing Elven American Princess had become more popular than spotting Elvis helped. Her magic was always chasing blind leads. Princess Meredith skiing in Utah. Princess Meredith dancing in Paris. Princess Meredith gambling in Vegas. After three years I was still a front-page story for the tabloids, though the latest headlines had been speculating that I was dead as the King of Rock and Roll . . . Three years ago, Princess Meredith fled the court of her cruel Aunt Andais, the Queen of Air and Darkness, leaving that garden of decadent delights and backstabbing intrigues for the comparative calm of Los Angeles. Using her magic to pass for human, Meredith began a new life as a private investigator specializing in supernatural crime. But now Doyle, the Queen's chief bodyguard and assassin, has been dispatched to fetch her back--whether she likes it or not. The product of a marriage designed to cement peace between the rival Seelie and Unseelie courts, Meredith has always been scorned by both factions in spite of her royal blood. But that blood is behind the Unseelie Queen's surprisingly urgent summons. For ever since the fey's exile from Europe to America, their power and purity have been fading. Desperate to renew her race, Queen Andais now pins her hopes on a contest between Meredith and her own son, the sadistic Prince Cel. The first to produce a child will win the throne. The loser's reward will be death . . .

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Meredith Gentry is a faerie princess. Not the disneyfied children's version either. This one lives in Los Angeles, and much like Angel, is a private investigator of sorts, and looks into problems associated with the supernatural world a lot of the time.
She is also involved with the politics of the faerie realm, and this is why she is hiding out. She gets discovered, and has to fight back against the relatives that want to bump her off.
Could've been a lot better..........2007-09-03
I'm new to LKH. Read all of the Anita Blakes I could and stomached the ones I couldn't to the best of my ability while letting go of the books then picking them back up to try again. They get sooooooo dull, I swear. Couldn't even finish the lastest one because all they did was sat in a tomb or room and talk about getting a tiger and all this other stupid uninteresting stuff with swarms of animals running in and out the door. Sometimes I just skip chapters all the way. Then I decided to try lil' Merry out just to see what could be happening in her corner...
Which ended up being...
Nothing.
Don't get me wrong. I thought this book was GREAT! - In the beginning. I was having a great time reading about Merry on the run! Nothing was better than her hiding out in the van, jumping through the van while she's on the run, her being chased and those witches coming down on her, her sorting wards on the bathroom door to keep her enemies at bay. Guys! Was I the ONLY one having fun during those parts until it got DULL. I was so steamed. Why couldn't the first book BE about Merry on the run using her powers to stop her foes THEN toward the end her next book be about the point of this book? Man, all the fun was sucked out and all I remember reading about after that was descriptions, descriptions, descriptions.
I got soooooooo sick of Merry describing how some guy's different colored hair "spilled" over his shoulders. Why does EVERYBODY have to have LONG hair farie or not? Get a personality, ya know. I got so tired of her describing EYES over and over again and chest, and thighs, breast, legs, the whole BUCKET of chicken! I was wondering when she was gonna FIGHT something and about time the end came when she was attacked I didn't even care anymore, I lost touch with the girl from the beginning, all alone, hiding, who was trying to stay alive. Hell, Frost and whatnot were there anyway.
What happened! Where was the power? Where was Merry on the run using wit to divert her foes. And am I the ONLY one who thought Roane was the more interesting males than any of the guys in this book. When she encountered him I was actually drawn to the page, then all these other people were just flat. Personally, I didn't care about anybody else. They didn't sick out to me like Roane. Nor did they stick out to me like Jeremy and Ringo and everyone else at the agency. All the other characters are just THERE, seriously, except the Queen (I do love the Queen). Even Cel was dull to me, there just wasn't enough of him. I expected Sholto (SP) to be Cel at first, guess not.
Merry visiting her Grandmother, short and sweet when it could've been fulfilling and made things interesting. Merry got all her men and she's ready to go. Guess she's not exactly fertile with the sixth book coming out this year. I really don't think I can stick around if this is it. It's like I liked her at the very beginning of this book and about time the end came I was like "well, she got her men, no need in me sticking around, they can handle it".
Someone! Please give me a reason to keep reading this series! Please!
Princess Meredith gets lucky...often!.......2007-08-23
A Kiss of Shadows is the first in a new series by Laurell K. Hamilton of Anita Blake fame. Like the Anita Blake books, it takes place in a modern-day USA where magic is real and everybody knows it. Instead of focusing on vampires, the supernatural community in this series is Faerie - magical, beautiful, immortal beings who are headquartered in St. Louis (for reasons that are not completely clear other than that Hamilton lives there). Our hero Merry Gentry is a mixed-heritage Faerie princess who is on the run from her people. She's working in a magical detective agency in LA. I'm a big Dresden Files fan, so I thought I would give this new series a try.
But once Hamilton sets the scene in LA, the action is moves to the Faerie Court and centers on Merry (Princess Meredith NicEssus)and her stepchild relationship with the court and her aunt, Queen Andais of the Unseelie. Without spoilers, Princess Meredith comes into her magic through sex. Apparently faeries are very sensual beings, and Merry has many opportunities to explore various aspects of faerie sensuality and the different forms that faeries take. A Kiss of Shadows has lots of hot scenes.
If you enjoy supernatural romance and adventure, but are a little put off by bloodsucking, you will enjoy this new series.
Not impressed....and a ripoff of another book...........2007-08-07
This was a boring, boring book. Did not engage me at all, didn't keep my interest. In addition, it is written in the 1st person, which I loathe.
It also reminded me that this series is a ripoff of the Highlander Series by Karen Marie Moning. Yes there is a subtle twist in the fact that the story focuses on the female fae (so not a COMPLETE ripoff) but still not impressed. The original idea for the book came from another author. That's pathetic.
I've been looking for a great book for a long time, and I keep being disappointed. I guess anyone can publish a book now-a-days.
The Princess Returns.......2007-06-07
A Kiss of Shadows (2000) is the first fantasy novel of the Meredith Gentry series. Merry Gentry is the alias of Meredith NicEssus -- the mortal daughter of Prince Essus -- and the niece of Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness. Three year ago, Princess Meredith had run from the Unseleighe Court because she knew that her cousin Cel wanted her dead and his minions would keep challenging her until she died in a duel.
In this novel, Merry is an agent of the Grey Detective agency. While she is only partially sidhe, her talents are much greater than most humans. Jeremy Grey -- owner of the agency -- has a great deal of faith in her mystical abilities and asks her to listen to two women who would like to become their clients.
The agency does not do divorce work, but Jeremy is reconsidering for this particular case. The wife, Frances Norton, is carrying a nasty death spell put on her by her husband. The mistress, Naomi Phelps, is part fey, but untrained in magic. The husband has taken Polaroid shots of his mistresses and shown them to his wife. When Frances sees Naomi is a restaurant, she introduces herself and the two have become close friends due to their common victimization.
Merry is not able to refuse the two victims and becomes a decoy to ensnare Alistair Norton in the use of magic to seduce women. All goes well until Merry finds herself falling in lust for Alistair. Yet she retains enough clarity to recognize that the oil being smeared on her is Branwyn's Tears, a magical substance that bestows sidhe-like powers and lusts on humans.
Merry escapes from the trap, but Alistair becomes very dead. However, her true identity has become known to the police. They are hesitant to believe her about the Branwyn's Tears until several of them become enflamed with lust after the oil touches their bodies. Although Merry is released and smuggled out of the building, Queen Andais now knows where she is and sends for her.
In this story, Merry returns to the Unseleighe Court with trepidation and distrust. After all, someone has sent the Slaugh out to kill her and she is attacked two more times on the way to the court. OF course, Cel is definitely out to kill her and thinks that his favored position will protect him from his mother the Queen. Yet Merry has other enemies besides Cel and his toadies.
The attacks have one good effect: she has come into her powers. She has the Hand of Flesh and is welcomed back by the sithin and the earth itself. Then Queen Andais announces that the celibacy geas on her Guard has been lifted, but only for Merry; many of the guards are now hoping to get her pregnant and thus become the King. Of course, some sidhe males have long since excluded themselves from this privilege by their past treatment of the young princess.
Merry has a few sidhe that she trusts and they soon decide to transfer their allegiance to her. She also gains some other allies, including the King of the Goblins -- and a small, common goblin named Kitto -- as well as the Queen of the Demi-fey. Even Sholto, the mixed blood King of the Slaugh, has swung to her side, at least for a while.
This story is full of sex and blood. Since Merry is descended from five fertility deities, some of her magic is based on sexual acts; in fact, she is beginning to discover that she can heal and be healed during sex. Indeed, she finds herself able to heal more than the fey.
Blood, however, is both less important to the quick-healing fey and more significant because of the sadistic tendencies of the Unseleighe. Dueling to the death is a common way for the sidhe to get rid of their enemies. Moreover, the queen tortures her enemies and even her subjects -- sometimes for millennia -- and casually kills minor offenders.
Highly recommended for Hamilton fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of sidhe magic, court intrigue and sexual powers.

3 1/2 stars. Enjoyable, but by no means a five star book.......2007-02-24
My first try of Kimberly Logan, and I enjoyed A KISS IN THE DARK. For a debut novel, it's very good. I can only imagine how good her writing will get as her talent develops over the years.
Firstly, the writing style was wonderfully easy to read and quite engaging. It had a nice, flowing style that, for the most part, avoided jarring point-of-view switches and overly complicated sentences. I often feel that writers are trying to impress me with their knowledge of grammar and complicated sentences in their writing, which gets really annoying after a while. Luckly, this is an author who doesn't do that. Her words paint a vivid picture without getting bogged down in the telling.
The character sketches were also fairly well done, although I felt that this book could have used an extra 50 - 100 pages to really flesh them out as well as they deserved. There were a lot of times that I felt like the romance was overwhelmed by the other plotline (Tristan and Deirdre trying to find Tristan's runaway sister, Emily). While that plotline was very well executed, I often felt that the romance was left on the back burner. Also, a few of the problems seemed to be resolved just a little too easily at the end. I found it difficult that Tristan could forgive Deirdre's role in his mother death so quickly and easily after it was revealed.
Still, this was an enjoyable read, and I'm not sorry that I bought this book. I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by Kimberly Logan, as I think she shows great promise, especially considering that this is her first novel. Hopefully her later books will live up to the talent I see in A KISS IN THE DARK. Recommended, but not a five-star book.
Could not get into it.......2005-12-22
I had a hard time getting into it. In fact I may have made it to the third chapter then skipped around when I finally decided it just was not going to keep me interested. I see others really enjoyed it but for me it just didn't have what the spark necessary to hook me.
A New Voice To Watch In Romance!!!.......2005-07-28
Ms. Logan's debut effort will leave the reader speechless! This is a fresh new voice in the industry that has a gifted way of telling a unique story without leaving any details unturned. The result...a well balanced read that will stay with readers long after the book is done.
Viscountess Rotherby has a secret. One that she protects as well as she can while helping those in need. Her secret though is about to be exposed when Lord Tristan Knight comes to her door requesting help in locating his run-a-way sister. It's thought to be believed that she has entered Tothill Fields. Deirdre at first refuses to help but her soft heart and giving nature won't let her turn her back on the handsome "knight" that has asked for help. See...what Tristan doesn't know is that he and Deirdre share a past. One, that haunts Deirdre. This is her way of making things right. But, there's a problem. She is falling for the handsome Tristan, falling hard. Will she be able to walk away from him once they find his sister?
Ms. Logan has seamlessly blended all the details that she has included into this read into a story that entertains. Her storyline is fresh and romantic, and her characters are larger than life. Tristan is a remarkable hero, and his love for his sister, grief and personal issues totally shape the man that he is on the pages. Deirdre is a herione that you can't help but cheer for. I truly would like to come back and visit with this group again...especially Peter from the Rag-Tag bunch. I think there is a hero in the making there.

Bravo .......2005-07-14
As a history teacher and an avid reader, I was pleased with the historical accuracy of the novel. At a time when social class was determined by birth, street children were dispensable. Ms. Logan has done her research! Her work accurately depicts the times without "getting in the way" of the mystery.
A love story that confronts social class is timeless - if you have doubts, look at the press releases re: Prince Albert of Monaco and his stewardess lover.
I am looking forward to reading more from this "new" author.
A keeper!.......2005-07-10
A Kiss in the Dark is a definite keeper--a fabulous debut by new author Kimberly Logan. It's no surprise that this book won RWA's Golden Heart award. The plot and characters seemed fresh, the pace was quick, and it was a totally engrossing read. Deirdre and Tristan are characters who will stay with you, long after you finish the book. Highly recommended!

Dark, Mysterious & Sensuous.......2007-08-06
I finished His Dark Kiss within one day and I liked it a lot. This tale had all the necessary elements to make a gothic fan very happy. Dark, atmospheric, tense and menacing. Evenly-paced and vivid story-telling. Well fleshed-out vivid characters, both likeable and sympathetic, as well as sinister and unusual. Nail-biting mystery, with an unexpected villain. A crumbling and spooky castle which safeguarded years of secrets. Featuring a sexy, smouldering, mysterious hero and a loving, loyal, down-to-earth heroine.
Unlike the previous and debut book, Dark Desires, this one fairly smouldered with sexual tension. The heroine fell in lust with the hero almost from the outset, and their every encounter intensified that tension. Although, the author did the sexual tension very well, I am still not sure if I was convinced of the heroine's immediate lust for her employer.
I also found the heroine a little too forward and vocal with her opinions...especially with the hero, who was supposed to be dark and forbidding. She had certainly heard enough rumours about him and should be wary of him.
While this story was almost pitch-perfect, I just felt that the sexual tension took over too much of the story, hence the mystery, which could had been stronger, was compromised.
Eve Silver is undoubtedly a fast-rising, masterful storyteller. I will pick up her next gothic novel without doubting her brilliant ability to evoke the mood and create an atmosphere of perfect tension for a gothic story, populated by a cast of vivid, multi-layered characters.
Incredible Gothic Romance- It will give you chills! (B+ Grade).......2007-07-13
Eve Silver is becoming a star in the gothic romance arena. "His Dark Kiss" is a perfect novel that channels a classic- "Jane Eyre". This dark story is seductive, mysterious and everything in between. All that it was missing was the typical, dark and stormy night approach. (No clichés here!)
Emma has come to Manorbrier Castle as a governess for her cousin's six year old son. She has never met Lord Anthony Craven, as he was married to her cousin. She ended up dead and assumed by the locals that he murdered her. Emma doesn't believe in them since she is well read and intelligent. She has lived a life of indifference from her aunts who gave her shelter, but nothing else, due to being born illegitimate. This is now her time to shine and perhaps some happiness.
Anthony is her brooding yet handsome employer who makes her all tingly inside from the moment she meets him. Sparks fly on both ends but Anthony has too many secrets and everyone around him seems to end up dead. Did he really kill her first wife and other governesses? Will Emma end up like them?
This story is so well written that it keeps the questions rolling till the very end. There are so many mysteries and villains a foot that you will not fully understand who is causing the problems and why Anthony keeps corpses in his tower (Yes, dead bodies are around!)
Emma and Anthony's exchanges are very passionate, so much so that regardless of the tension and mistrust between them, you hope things work out and they will have their happily ever after.
Fans of sexually charged scenes, suspense and of course mystery will enjoy this gothic tale.

Emma has always been more of a burden than anything to her aunts, also being the brunt of many slights and insults due to her illegitimate birth. When she has the chance to escape her aunts' home and become a governess to the child of her late cousin, she jumps at the chance. Never mind there are many rumblings about the widower, Lord Craven, and what really happened to her cousin.
When Emma arrives at the Manorbrier estate, she is immersed in even more mysteries. Previous governesses met unfortunate ends and Emma herself experiences strange accidents. What exactly is Lord Craven doing in that forbidden tower late at night, and with dead bodies no less? These questions plague Emma, but she can't resist her delightful charge, Nicky, or his sinfully handsome father. When opportunity presents itself for a more personal relationship with Lord Craven, Emma is torn between her unanswered questions and her dangerous attraction to the seductive man. But what will be her fate if she gives in to her desires for His Dark Kiss?
Eve Silver has written another brilliant gothic romance. Her first novel Dark Desires was wonderful, and His Dark Kiss is even more incredible. There is a richness to the setting and the story which measures up to even the extremely high standards set by classic masters of the genre like Victoria Holt. However, Eve Silver brings a modern heat level to her stories that is guaranteed to curl your toes in delight. The interactions between our hero and heroine are very passionate and intense. Characters are brought to life with vivid descriptions and mysterious behaviors.
As with any true gothic story, suspense is key to the story, as is the requisite spooky manor house and dark hero. His Dark Kiss has all that in spades. I found myself drawn into the setting, envisioning the manor and experiencing Emma's fears and desires. I, too, wondered what was going on in the dark tower and why the servants were so secretive. As events spiral farther onward, I was sucked into the maelstrom, and carried along for the ride.
The gothic romance is far from dead as some would like to believe. Eve Silver breathes new life into the genre that is the basis for so many romance novels on the market today. If readers want a thrilling story that will give them goose bumps in an oh-so-good way, than His Dark Kiss by Eve Silver is just the novel for them!

Recommended Gothic Romance ..........2006-11-28
Emma Parrish finds herself rescued from the untenable situation of being sold to the highest bidder by her heartless aunts when she receives an offer from Anthony Craven to come to his home in Wales to act as governess to his young son, Nicholas.
Manorbrier Castle is dark and foreboding and boasts a cast of servants that are deeply loyal to Lord Craven and intimidating to Emma. Upon arrival at Manorbrier, Emma is warned to never venture near the round tower of the castle. It is forbidden.
As Emma goes through her days, she finds herself falling completely in love with Nicky, Lord Anthony Craven's son, who loves her back just as wholeheartedly. More disconcerting, she finds herself incredibly drawn to Anthony. Anthony has many secrets and spends a good deal of every day in the round tower conducting mysterious business. Emma finds herself learning more about him from the servants and from neighbors--and what she finds is terrifying. Many are convinced that Anthony is some sort of ghoul that has a fascination for the dead and is conducting horrible experiments on them. This is contrary to everything Emma has learned about him. He adores his son, can be warm and loving, and during their encounters, Anthony conducts himself as a gentleman, despite his deep attraction to Emma. What is the truth about Anthony, and will Emma still be able to love him once she knows all of his secrets?
His Dark Kiss is a tightly written gothic romance. Silver deftly creates a foreboding atmosphere that colors all of Emma's encounters. The secondary characters are sharply written and interesting and enhance both the mood of the story and the relationship between Emma and Anthony. The story is written exclusively from Emma's viewpoint, so it is fortunate that she's both likeable and smart. Anthony is virile and handsome, but also a loving father, and it becomes easy for the reader to see why Emma falls in love with him.
Armchair Interviews highly recommend this gothic romance.
I liked this book, but ..........2006-11-19
I did like this book, but there wasn't enough conflict between the two leads. She liked him, really liked him, right from the get go. He kept trying to push her away, but you knew they were going to end up together. I know, it's a romance, and the hero and heroine always end up together, but it was just too easy here.
I loved the atmosphere. Gothic romances are what I grew up on and I love them. A gloomy castle, a dark, brooding hero and I'm in heaven. Eve Silver had all that in this book, but it just wasn't enough. There needs to be a little more turmoil before the happy ending.

This book is horrible. There are many other great cocktail books on the market. Craft of the Cocktail by Dale Degroff, Douglas Ankrash Shaken & Stirred, The Art Of The Bar, Gary Reagons Joys of Mixology. I already tossed this book in the trash. It's no worthy of taking an inch of space on my book shelf

Maybe it's just me..........2007-04-27
From the back cover:
Even in the darkness of the moonless night he saw the passion blazing in her green eyes...
His kiss was hot and powerful, a primal act of male domination. She hated him, hated herself for responding to Mitch Durant, the man who stole her heart with a kiss, the lawyer who destroyed her father in court years earlier. Now she was back, engaged to another man--but determined to get even...Until she was framed for theft and murder and Mitch was her only way out. His price for defending her was total trust--and a promise to never investigate his shrouded past...
Royce was a journalist at the top of her form, challenging him with her beauty, brains--and a fiance Mitch despised. But not even Mitch Durant, San Francisco's top criminal attorney, could have anticipated the felony-murder charges that drove her into his arms. He was her only refuge. Mitch, the man she hated, was willing to risk his life to clear her name--and to catch the killer who stalked her every move...
And my review:
Second try of Meryl Sawyer, and probably my last. I find that the relationship between the leads is pure sex, and no substance. I guess that a lot of readers like that, but I don't. I have no problem with sexual attraction between characters (in fact, good chemistry is vital for a good romance), but there needs to be something besides flying hormones for me to cheer a couple on. This was another "I hate you, come here" kind of story, and I've gotten very sick of those over my years of reading romance.
Also, this felt a bit like a "melodramatic lives of the rich" for me. I prefer "ordinary people" romances. Obviously, not everyone agrees with me, but that's my opinion. I doubt I'll be trying this author again. I read romance for a relationship, not just a lot of hot sex.
One of the Best Love Stories!.......2001-03-05
This book was incredible!! It was sexy, page-turning, & emotional all at once (similar to an SEP novel). It was such an unexpected surprise; I've never read Meryl Sawyer before but now I'm very curious to see if her books are always this well-crafted and moving. The love story between Mitch and Royce is possibly the most passionate and plausible I've ever read in a romance novel. If I had any complaints, I'd say that the resolution to the mystery needed to be explained better. I cried more than once reading this book, but at the same time, it's steamy...and has an uplifting sweetness to it. Read this book!
Very Good.......2000-04-24
This book is very hard to find. I won it at Amazon auctions. I'm glad I read it. Mitch, a criminal attorney with a very sad past and Royce, a columnist who hates him because he convicted her father 5 years prior. She's accused of theft and he's there to defend her. I usually figure who is the villian in most books but this one fooled me. I didn't like it that Royce's uncle conducted an investigation on Mitch even though he specifically told Royce not to do it. Right... Royce didn't do it but she didn't demand her uncle seize. That was the least she could do as she couldn't afford his attorney fees. Nevertheless, it made for a good story. I loved it that they had this chemistry that neither could deny, hard as they tried. I recommend this book to anyone who can find it, although, Tempting Fate is still my favorite.
One Of Her Finest !.......1998-08-29
Any fan of Meryl Sawyer's never has to worry about setting high expectations with her books, and "A KISS IN THE DARK " is no exception. This one delivers. This is one of my favorites. A romance that practically sizzles off the pages, and a mystery that has more twists and turns that a pretzel ! Mitch Durant is a tough, smart yet unfailingly likeable guy, and Royce Ann Winston is his perfect foil. Both are trying to keep their lives in some kind of order , yet fate keeps throwing them curves - and throwing them together! Trust was what nipped their relationship in the bud years before, and now Royce realizes that trusting Mitch might be the only way out of the mess she's found herself in. Meryl Sawyer has again given readers a sexy, touching love story, and a crackling mystery that keeps you turning the pages at a fever pitch. Beg , borrow, or steal this one folks! It's FANTASTIC !
Fabulous! A gripping mystery and sensual love story........1998-08-07
Royce Winston is in deep trouble. Accused of grand theft, then murder, the only man who can help her is Mitch Durant. But she hates him because she blames him for her father's death. Still, she is forced to turn to him if she wants to clear her name. Mitch is a dark, tortured hero with secrets of his own, but that doesn't stop him form helping Royce. They have to sort through a list of possible villains while the murderer lurks in the back ground ready to strike. The ending is a zinger! I was surprised, then I looked back and all the clues were there. Well, crafted. VERY SENSUAL. I can't recommend it more highly. One of my all time keepers.

Redemption Anyone? (3.5 Stars).......2007-06-01
A Kiss in the Dark by Mary R. Butler is a story of friendship, betrayal, love and redemption. Billy Ray is a young boy whose mother dies when he is a young child. Billy is left in the care of his father, Darrel. Darrel falls in love with a woman who does not want his child and he betrays his son by abandoning him. Darrel is particularly vicious in what he says to Billy prior to leaving, telling him he never loved or wanted him. He also tells his son he is cursed and his children will be cursed. The abandonment and words will affect all of Billy's relationships, particularly with women and with God.
Billy is left in the care of his best friend, Travis Malcolm's family. Travis is a young boy in the comfort of a two-parent home who is raised as a Christian. Throughout the boys childhoods they are there for each other. The Malcolms raise and love Billy as their own son, providing him with the same opportunities as Travis. Billy, however, is always troubled and in trouble and Travis is always there to pick up the pieces and prove his love for his friend. At age ten, Adrienne Mitchell moves to their hometown of Silver Rock, Georgia. Both boys are enamored with her.
As adults the men become successful lawyers though on different paths. Travis is working to be strong in his faith and Billy is a notorious womanizer. He marries Adrienne and within weeks a series of events turns his life upside down. Travis, as always is there for his friend, though he has a secret of his own. He is in love with his best friend's wife.
A Kiss in the Dark is a dark story filled with betrayals, fears and people seeking and needing redemption. This book would have touched me even more if I had gotten to know the characters a little better. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy stories of flawed people who ultimately realize all problems can be resolved through faith.

"Your Love Will Torture and Torment You".......2004-09-14
The melodramatic and cliched title "Kiss of Death" says everything you need to know about this book - it is silly, dull, predictable, confusing, and ultimately pointless. Characters are one-dimensional, suspense is non-existence, questions raised go unanswered, and the story itself is packed full of endless episodes that go no where and lend nothing to the flimsy plot.
It's summer in Winthrop, Massachusetts and four teenagers are settling into a hot and humid break. They are Jeffrey Thomas, his girlfriend Barbara, his best friend Paul, and other close friend Miranda. Winthrop is your average seaside town, but a new arrival stirs things up: Rebecca Webster, a very beautiful young woman who seems to have an intent interest in Jeffrey. Soon weird things are going on: your usual nasty accidents, odd dreams, weird animals and abnormal behaviour from our main characters. Jeffrey in particular is effected by Rebecca's presence, and it doesn't help that his awe-struck girlfriend is dressing exactly like her.
So what's the deal with Rebecca? What does she want with Jeffrey? The answers won't be found in this book - you'll have to spend more money in order to get the second book, which has the even more ridiculous name "Dreams of Revenge". There is absolutely no reason why this slim volume should be split into two books, except - of course! - it makes you spend more money this way!
The author ends chapters like R. L. Stine's "Goosebumps" books - with dramatic, gasp-inducing shocks...only for the beginning of the next chapter to take place several days later, telling us in hindsight what really happened. For instance, a teenager in the diner begins to choke on her food, and we end with "Silently, Vicki slipped off her chair to the floor". The next chapter begins a week later, with characters commenting on the strange occurrence, saying simply: "Thank goodness she was alright", without any explanation on how she was saved. The entire narrative is riddled with these cliched `suspense' moments that have no real purpose in the over all story, and aren't scary enough themselves to merit their presence. Almost every chapter ends with one of these attempts at shock, and eventually they just get silly - from "then there was only darkness," to "then, mercifully, a velvet darkness enveloped him as he lost consciousness" to the ludicrous "Rebecca didn't have a telephone." Horrors!
Finally, the forced `love' story between Jeffrey and Rebecca is unlikely (based entirely on the effect she has on him, which the reader can hardly experience or understand for themselves) as well as repetitive - she draws him in, she pushes him away, she draws him in, she pushes him away - you get the picture.
Definitely give this particular teen-read a wide berth.
Exellent book.......2004-01-23
Out of all the books i have read i would say this is in my top 10 books that really got my imagination flowing, and elizabeth moore should keep writing. I would love to read more of her books. she is an inspiration to many people including myself.
AMAZING.......2002-01-29
I read this when i was a very little kid. I thought it was the most amazing book i'd ever read. And to this day whenever i write i use the name Rebecca. That book molded me to be what i am today... a strange person who likes witches.
This book was the kiss of death!.......2000-06-02
The writing in this book was truly terrible. There wasbasically 200 pointless pages in which the cast of one-dimensionalcharacters went on and on about how wonderful Rebecca was (and I didn't particuarly think she was all that great). Then there were ten pages that were somewhat interesting (and earned the second star, since they sparked a bit of interest). This was one of the worst books I have read in a long time. It wasn't even suspensful, or scary, and it's supposed to be a horror book!
It was well detailed but it had a few problems........1998-11-22
It was written well enough that I'd like to find the sequel but I'm not completely impressed with it.
