The Bestselling Classic on Love, Loss, and Letting Go
In Necessary Losses, Judith Viorst turns her considerable talents to a serious and far-reaching subject: how we grow and change through the losses that are an inevitable and necessary part of life. She argues persuasively that through the loss of our mothers' protection, the loss of the impossible expectations we bring to relationships, the loss of our younger selves, and the loss of our loved ones through separation and death, we gain deeper perspective, true maturity, and fuller wisdom about life. She has written a book that is both life affirming and life changing.

Good for everyone.......2007-05-15
Sometimes we wonder why life is so damn tough and sad and tragic. Well, this book doesn't help to answer those questions or to make it seem any better, but it does normalize all of those feelings, and it does explore all of the normal and necessary losses people experience in their lives. My therapist recommended it to me when my not-good-for-me boyfriend broke up with me and in turn, facilitated some of my personal growth and taught me to deal with some really hard feelings. I learned that losing him was necessary to my own well-being. This book is great for everyone.
Awesome!.......2007-05-12
The title caught my attention and I am so glad I bought it. Its one of the easiest books to read about moving on from losses and helps the reader understand that these losses are indeed, necessary. I have been a therapist for 15 years and have not come across such an engaging and practical book as this one. I myself am a slow reader but got through it in record time. Just do yourself and your loved ones a favor by reading this book!
Necessary losses.......2007-03-20
Great book, but you need to take a break now & then..its heavy going and CAN bring up your "stuff" my therapist recommended it...but even she admits that you need to read it slowly..and maybe a few times. It makes a lotta sense.
Deal With Losses.......2007-02-07
I first bought this book over 20 years ago when I got divorced, and it helped me deal with that event as a loss. Frankly, I hadn't even realized that it even was a loss until I read Viorst's wonderful book. I was able also to reach back and deal with the death of my parents, the losses inherent in growing into middle age, and other things . . . even losing my first girl friend.
Since then I have given this book to numerous friends who have had to deal with losses. I hope that they put the book back into full print as it should be required reading for just about everyone.
Necessary Losses.......2007-01-10
First of all, I am a child and adult psychoanalyst and as it happens Mrs. Viorst (a free-lance writer of, among other things, childrens books) was invited by the institute who trained me in Child Psychoanalysis to be a "lay" student-- meaning not medically professional-to participate in the training which was one of the best at that time in child developmental psychoanalytic theory and practice. It was a committment by this author which spanned several years and a very extensive and intensive experience. this book was a distillation of many elements of that program as seen by this very "clear" competent writer. I have given this book to many people and bought this one to replace one of my daughter's copies. It is an indepth look at psychological developement and especially the mother-child relationship (or Object relationships) and was on the New York Times best seller list for many months. It is still very relevent and well-worth the current new and used price.

Book Description
They are still one of the biggest rock bands of the last three decades. With four consecutive triple-platinum albums and 54 million records sold, their tours continue to sell out and classic songs like "Lady," "Renegade," "Come Sail Away," and "The Grand Illusion" have earned them a whole new generation of fans. At the height of their fame, they were living the ultimate rock `n' roll fantasy -- an odyssey of groupies, drugs, and music that most musicians only dream of. As a band, Styx seemed invincible. But their founding member and bass player, Chuck Panozzo, was about to hit rock bottom. His seemingly debauched life as the ultimate rocker was a lie -- and the truth was about to catch up with him.
The Grand Illusion is a no-holds-barred, backstage pass to the journey of one of the world's most revered bands, and the true story of Chuck Panozzo's 50-year struggle to reconcile his public life as a rock star with his private life as a gay man. Beginning with the birth of Styx in Chicago and their meteoric rise, The Grand Illusion is a revealing look at the triumphs and tragedies that surrounded Panozzo's life. He chronicles life on the road, the break-up of the band, his struggle to help his twin brother and bandmate John Panozzo battle addiction, as well as his split with Dennis De Young, and finally coming to terms with his HIV positive status. Illuminating and unflinching, The Grand Illusion will captivate the band's legions of devoted fans, as well as music lovers everywhere.

Not what I thought.......2007-09-06
I have reread this volume several times, the best chapter was,"Hey now youre a rockstar". The book is very informative about what it is like to be in the closet,so to speak. There is very little about how the songs were created, the hedonistic life of a rock star, or the ridiculous extravagances of superstardom.
I was looking for more about the music, but if you are looking for a motivational book to overcome HIV/AIDS, this is a great work. It will inspire all those suffering with this terrible disease.
Perfect for any library catering to rock music readers........2007-07-08
Fans of the rock group Styx won't want to miss GRAND ILLUSION: LOVE, LIES, AND MY LIFE WITH STYX. It can't get more authoritative than this: author Church Panozzo is also one of the group's founding members and provides a full view of the birth of the band in Chicago, their growth as a huge rock group, their experiences on the road, and more. All the highs and lows of the group are charted in a blend of memoir and rock chronicle essential for any fan of the group. Perfect for any library catering to rock music readers.
I highly recommend this!.......2007-06-01
There's enough Styx "stuff" to keep the casual fan interested, but this is much more the story of how a gay man survived being in a huge rock band. This is very well written, and almost feels like he is sitting there telling you this himself. He's honest and doesn't try to sugar coat anything, including the most painful moments. His insight on what it's like to hide your true self from the world is inspiring for anyone, gay or straight, who isn't comfortable in his or her own skin.
Anyone who has struggled with the role of religion in their life, particularly issues with the Catholic Church, will find themselves identifying with Chuck's struggles. And anyone dealing with an addict will recognize themselves and their loved ones in Chuck's ultimately unsuccessful attempts to be caretaker for his brother, John.
Chuck also deals with the far-too-common issue of people with HIV living in denial. The fact that he has made it back literally from the brink of death is a testament to his resiliency, as well as the efforts of doctors & medical researchers.
I found this to be an ultimately uplifting story of a man finally coming of age and finding his voice in the world.
Uncovering the person, not the band.......2007-05-27
The Grand Illusion takes the reader on a journey that starts in Chicago's south side in the 1960's. Chuck Panozzo tells his life story honestly about growing up, being a member of the rock band Styx, his struggle with being a homosexual, and his battle with HIV and AIDS. The book is an educational experience for hetrosexuals, and a wake-up call for homosexuals. For those readers wanting a lot of details about the inner workings of Styx, they're not here. This is a personal story about Chuck and his life. Styx is discussed, but much like anyone's job is discussed in any other autobiography. There are a few interesting facts about the band, and some resentment or anger displayed against cofounder Dennis DeYoung, but that's all you get.
The real story is about Chuck's struggles with depression, and the secret of being gay in an era that was much less tolerant of homosexuality than today. The Grand Illusion reveals Chuck Panozzo completely.
We lived happily forever... so that story goes..........2007-05-23
I've read the book over a couple of times. I was very moved by it. It's a wonderful story about Chuck and his struggle to "find himself". I was also at once happy and sad to read the stories about John. It is always sad and angering and frustrating when someone is in a downward spiral... and though you've given it your best efforts, there is nothing to do but sit helplessly and watch. And this book does give probably the best (if not ONLY) account of what happened to Chuck and John in those years that Styx was dormant.
I have to admit there was a small part of me that wanted to hear about his side of this drama known as Styx. However, I was about 2 chapters into the book when I realized that was not going to happen. The dirt just wasn't going to be there... and I was okay with that... and I actually cursed myself for limiting this book to a dirty tell-all.
It deserves so much better then that.
I was actually was pleasantly surprised at how little he talked about the band once they took off.
Although the title says: Chuck Panozzo. Love, Lies and my life with Styx. This is really about Chuck AND John Panozzo. That, for me, was the surprise twist in this book. And it was a welcomed one!
My only "flaw" with this book is that it's really a very brief "capture" of his life. There were some parts that I wish he'd taken the time and gone into more detail on. But considering that some people write autobiographies that are really boaring and take decades to read, I think "Hound Dog" did it right!!

Product Description
A book that claims with such clarity that 'physical' reality is merely an illusion that only exists in our brain. Fantastic? Sure it is. But David Icke's idea, presented in a way that everyone can understand, is a life-changing exposure of both the illusion we believe to be 'real' and the way this illusion is generated and manipulated to imprison us in a false reality. Icke says we 'live' in a 'holographic internet' in that our brains are connected to a central 'computer' that feeds us the same collective reality that we decode from waveforms and electrical signals into the holographic 3D 'world' that we all think we see.

explains a lot.......2007-10-02
I remember about ten years ago my car died, I couldn't afford another right away, so, I had to take the bus for a while. In order to get to the bus stop I had to walk a 1/2 mile. It was actually kind of nice, very early in the morning I'd walk, having the streets to myself for a few minutes before the world woke up. Into the second week of my walking to the bus stop I had what some would term an epiphany, I suddenly had this very strong feeling that nothing was real, and everything was being moved ever so slightly, but not enought to be noticed. Almost like I was seeing/not seeing something that was a secret and I wasen't in on it. This completely overwhelmed me and I realized I've felt this before, usually at nite usually when I'm alone. Ever since then I've been reading a lot of different books about an alternate state, or something else controling this planet. I've never believed in evolution, or missing links. I believe that this planet never "naturally" evolved. That we are not all products of simian dna and there is so much missing time regarding the "origin of man" that scientists just piece things together to make them fit, and our "experts" really have no idea what really happened. I think there were thousands of civilizations here at different points in time and for different reasons. Very interesting to say the least. It's really not that far fetched to think that we also have reptile dna, don't human embryos look like tadpoles? Don't we have a tail bone that looks like a reptile tail? Not any more far fetched than saying we all started as simian.
Better if it provided some direction.......2007-10-01
Icke's work originally came across my radar screen while reading something written by Stuart wilde. Since I enjoy exploring new topics I bought "And The Truth Shall Set You Free" And the Truth Shall Set You Free many years ago and found it to be a very well-researched and thought-provoking work. When I read this particular book I saw many of the same things I had seen before in Icke's work, plus an even deeper metaphysical orientation. What I felt was lacking was some direction on the part of the author as to how to best approach life in this dimension despite the fact that everything is just an "illusion." Bottom line, if one accepts the title is true, then how do we go about making the most of our lives while we are here? Because whether it's an illusion or not, we are still living here in this world of form and have to deal with it.
Disappointing...........2007-08-19
I had seen David's Secrets of the Matrix DVD here on online and thats when I decided that getting his new book could be a good idea. (Just go to Google Videos and type in Secrets of the Matrix)
Anyways it started out great with a quick recap of his previous research on the illuminati and then he really hit home with me as he was describing that the universe that we live in and percieve is really just a hologram! I mean amazing stuff, I felt a complete jump in my awareness it was amazing!
However, that was the only part I liked about this book. From my perspective the rest of the chapters are pointless. It looks as though he only added them in so that he would have a full book to write. He goes into the tiniest details about religion when we all should by now have a good idea of whats going on there. I didn't buy the book to read more about religions I bought it because I wanted to know what this infinite love is all about. He also pitifully explains how this New Age movement is another illusion too. I mean don't get me wrong a lot of New Age things can seem like a lot of crap but atleast give me more than 12 pages to explain why this is illusion. He only defense is that its just a part of the Matrix. He goes into how we are all Infinite Consciousness and that we live in a Matrix world but outside of that there really is nothing else. The details about what outside the Matrix or who we are, or what we are doing here, etc just aren't there. I'm supposed to accept that we are infinite love is the only truth, everything else is illusion. It sounds a lot like my earlier years being raised on Christianity when my pastor would tell me that Jesus is the only way to heaven and that there is no other way... hmmm... does something sound similiar here???
I mean David's entire book here is based on only ONE experience he had while on a drug or weed known as DMT. (also known as ayahuasca, which is Hallucinogenic) During this experience he telepathically heres a feminine voice explain this concept that infinite love is the only truth everything thing else is illusion. Bullocks as he would say! Who was this lady? Where was David's mind/consciousness/etc during this experience? It raised more questions than answers them. It sounds all great and terrific, I am all about love but I'm not convinced that David's ideas are completely accurate.
Also if you want to hear about the reptilian agenda there is a great video of Rick Reefe doing an interview with Alex Collier. I dare anyone of you to listen to that. Its a 12 part series thats about 2 hours total. You can find it on Youtube or simply doing a google search on Alex Collier. Its probably that most amazing eye opening/awakening experience about what is really going on.
Overall, I like David and I support what he is doing but I only give him a 3/5 for this book.
Freeing........2007-05-19
A helpful reminder of the Reality of the World. I love to read things that affirm the Truth.
Lizards, Jews, Bush and the News!.......2007-04-20
If you have ever read any of David Icke's books, you may feel that the first half of this book is just a rehash of some of his other works. Edited down a bit, but not quite enough for my liking.
Like some of the other reviewers, I really have a hard time taking someone seriously that talks about lizard people! But then I turned to page 166 and lo and behold there was a picture of David standing there in the nude, with his Lizard dangling down!!! Sheesh... I'm a believer now! And on top of it I'll be having nightmares about it for the next year!
I must admit though, he did a real good job on religion bashing. And explaining to the reader why spirituality and religion just can't co-exist in peace. He not only hammered away on Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the Catholicism, he also took a good shot at the New-Agers.
Also this book explains why the Education and Health Systems are detrimental to man-kind. What is wrong with society. And how the Illuminate are behind it all.
I kept finding tid bits of information in the book that I already read in other books. The other books may have given a more in-depth look at certain subjects, but by reading this book you will avoid having to read countless other books.
If wasn't for the Lizard people and David's Balls, I would'a gave this book 4 stars!

Book Description
This book is based on more than three years of research and include more than 30 interviews conducted by the author with such friends and co-workers as Debbie Reynolds, Jane Wyman and Karl Malden. The author had access to more than 150 boxes of Agnes Moorehead papers which are stored at the Wisconsin State Historical Society in Madison. He also had access to the Orson Welles papers held at the Lily Library in Bloomington, Indiana and the Paul Gregory (who produced Moorehead's acclaimed stage productions) Papers held at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming. The author also quotes from private letters between Agnes Moorehead and her secretary over the course of two decades--letters which give Moorehead's biting critiques of the social morals of the 60's; her television series "Bewitched"; and other aspects of her private and professional lives. In addition the author provides the reader with a comprehensive listing of the many sources he used as well as a comprehensive listing of Moorehead stage, screen, radio and television appearances. This is the first comprehensive biography of one of the most acclaimed actresses of her time with never before revealed tidbits which will delight her many fans.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE: THIS BOOK.......2007-08-10
Just a quick note to let you know that this edition of the book is out of print. The book proved to be very popular and the publisher has put out a second edition, which also can be found here on Amazon for ordering. The second edition of I LOVE THE ILLUSION: THE LIFE AND CAREER OF AGNES MOOREHEAD, 2ND EDITION, includes new material not in the first printing. You can find the new edition, listed at $24.95, here on Amazon! under BOOKS, LISTED AS I LOVE THE ILLUSION: THE LIFE AND CAREER OF AGNES MOOREHEAD, or under the author's name, CHARLES TRANBERG. As the author, I would like to THANK everybody who bought this first edition and I appreciate the reviews that were given it by readers.
Bewitching Star.......2007-03-10
An extremely interesting book on one of the worlds most underated actresses. Well researched and contains information not previously recorded. The lists of Miss Moorehead's radio, stage, film and television work is extensive. This book proves there is much more to Agnes than Endora.
So much more than Endora.......2006-11-02
I was delighted to discover this book because Agnes Morehead was successful in every acting venue of her time, but largely remembered today only for her delightful, but campy, Endora on Bewitched. Mr. Tranberg clearly made every effort to cover her long and varied career in depth and to give us as complete a portrait of this private lady as can be hoped for. He made good use of the papers she donated to a library when she died and interviewed people who knew her both professionally and personally. I did not find as many mistakes in grammar, spelling, etc. as other reviewers have mentioned, most likely because I read a paperback edition which apparently was more tightly edited. Or maybe I'm just getting senile and missed them.
I did catch the fact that Mr. Tranberg referred, correctly, to the fact that Julie Andrews won the Oscar the year Ms. Morehead's good friend, Debbie Reynolds, was nominated for Molly Brown, but he incorrectly said that Julie won for The Sound of Music. Her winning performance was in Mary Poppins.
Considering the dreadful state of much of the writing about "celebrities" we are offered today, I can wholeheartedly recommend this fine attempt to help us understand and remember one of the greatest actresses of the 20th century.
As a special treat, find Ms. Morehead's "Sorry, Wrong Number" on a recording of classic radio performances. It still stands as one of the outstanding radio moments of all time.
The other side of Endora.......2006-08-19
I am currently half way through the book. The writer has done his homework and gives an in depth look at the career of this wonderful actress. Prior to reading this biography, I knew that Agnes Moorhead had a film career beginning with Citizen Kane; I did not know about her earlier years on the stage and radio.
A Good Biography of an Elusive Subject.......2006-08-15
What makes this book a standout are the extensive quotes included from people who knew Miss Moorehead well and for a lengthy period. Mr. Tranberg even managed to find a friend of her mother, who contributed some charming memories about Miss Moorehead's parents. Photographs are plentiful, and most I had never seen before. The number of sources is impressive, and the book is well organized, seamlessly interweaving biographical details with an assessment of her work. The editorial eerrors were jarring but not a major detraction.
Here and elsewhere I've read that Agnes Moorehead tried hard to keep her private life private. Previous treatments of Miss Moorehead have either dealt with her career almost exclusively ("Good Dames" and Lynn Kear's excellent chronicle of her work) or else have focused on select aspects of her personal life ("Agnes Moorehead: A Very Private Person" and "Hollywood Lesbians"). If the portrait still seems incomplete, it's not owing to Mr. Tranberg's thorough research but rather the difficulty of his subject: Most of Miss Moorehead's contemporaries are no longer available for interviews, contemporary interviews with Miss Moorehead are scarce, she seemed aloof to many of her colleagues, and in all likelihood Miss Moorehead left behind no diaries or personal letters. That considered, it's surprising that Mr. Tranberg was able to flesh out her personal life to the extent that he did.

Book Description
Domestic violence is a pervasive problem in our society that has only recently come to be acknowledged in public discussion. Though many see it as a social and political problem grounded in unequal gender roles, this level of analysis fails to explain adequately why many battered women return to their abusers despite intense suffering and the certainty of more physical violence.
The Illusion of Love challenges the prevailing model, which views the victim of abuse as a normal woman who is unable to escape from her batterer due to the effects of terror and psychological collapse. Instead, David Celani offers a new answer--that women who are battered have a fundamental attraction to partners who are abusive.
Based on his years of clinical experience treating battered women, Celani applies object relations theory and case examples from his own practice to show that many women--and indeed some men--are unconsciously drawn to abusive partners because of personality disorders caused by childhood abuse and neglect. He argues that any effective treatment for battered women must help unravel futile and self-defeating patterns, such as ones that spring from fears of abandonment and fascination with men who produce exaggerated promises of love followed by extreme rejecting behaviors.
The Illusion of Love examines the personalities of abusers as well, many of whom suffer from narcissism, a disorder that is also often associated with childhood abuse and neglect. Narcissistic men lash out violently in an attempt to control their own fears or abandonment and to compensate for unsatisfied emotional needs.
Celani concludes that domestic violence is often the tragic result of a union between individuals with complementary personality disorders. His findings fly in the face of the politically correct refusal to examine the behavior of the victim of abuse, a strategy that has led to a severe misunderstanding of the dynamics of the battering scenario. The Illusion of Love calls for primary prevention of neglectful parenting to stem the tide of abuse in the future, offering tangible hope for the treatment of victims of abuse as they attempt to extricate themselves from unhealthy, damaging relationships.

Why do Women Stay?.......2001-06-15
If you have been abused or you work with people who are being abused (that accounts for 85% of the US) read this book. It's not obvious, even to victims, why they can't just walk away. Since typically the abuser is male and victim is a female I was impressed that this compassionate book on the subject was written by a male. A classic in the subject of abuse.

an insightful view of destructive relationships.......2000-04-19
The author provides a foundational understanding of the psychodynamics and cyclic nature of abusive relationships. Celani explains how adult relations are unconscious repetitions of early childhood 'object relations'. He also compares his theories to those of other researchers and addresses practical methods for helping the victims. He is apparently passionate about the subject, making the book lively and approachable for lay persons as well as for psychotherapists.

Every Woman's Battle: Discovering God's Plan for Sexual and Emotional Fulfillment
ASIN: 0781442842 |
Book Description
The illusion of the perfect marriage is always just out of reach. Now there's help to escape this addiction to romance and turn women to God's vision for their lives. A subtle conflicting message has been ingrained in American women that their primary goal in life is to find the Prince who will whisk them off to a Magic Kingdom and save them from the drudgery of an ordinary life. The Prince will make them feel beautiful and loved, and will meet all their emotional needs, if he truly loves them. When unmet, these unrealistic expectations lead to a constant craving for "something more." Unable to make their wives happy, husbands often react by emotionally distancing themsevles. Lonely and disillusioned, wives turn to romance novels, movies, food and shopping to fill the emptiness. Those comforts turn into addictions, and that is when women become trapped. Only by finding the "Christ within" and developing a strong sense of their own value and God's vision for their life, can women rise to their potential and overcome narcissism, emotional neediness and the addiction to romance. This comes by focusing on God instead to their husbands to meet their needs and by retraining their thinking about romance. Only then can they have the courage to become the kind of women they admire who are not dependent on romance and constant attention from husbands in order to feel good about themselves or to be happy.

Trapped in the Magic Mirror - Shattering Illusions.......2006-09-21
I found this book to be very helpful both for myself and my clients (mostly women) in getting a grasp on the reality that we are not going to be living the fairy tale life and having a knight in shining armor rescue us is not essential to happiness. Women have been sold a bill of goods that we shoulda, otta, hafta, gotta, musta have a man or our lives are shattered. Well, This book shatters that myth and gives us helpful insight into living a full life as women; not as a princess in a fantasy world. This book is very grounded and practical. An excellent read that captures your attention and leaves you satisfied. This is not fluff - it makes us take a real look at the fairy tales we have allowed to direct our thinking as women. This should be on a top seller list.

Not your typical romance.......1998-11-26
If you're looking for a refreshing twist to the arranged marriage plot, this is the book for you. One of the most memorable aspects of this book is the transformation of the novel's characters. The characters have flaws and it's wonderful to watch them change themselves. The story and dialogue are well-written and antics of the youngest lord (Johnny) will have you laughing out loud. I only wish that Ms. Michaels had given each brother his very own book. I wasn't ready to have the story end.

Informative and well needed.......2004-10-06
This was an eye-opening, thought provoking book that should be required reading by everyone. It forced me into a whole new level of self awareness about my previous relationships and the one I'm maintaining now. The ideas are lucid and observant. It changed my perspective on love and relationships for the better. Thank you for the time and thought in writing this magnificent piece of work.....!!!
A Great Book for Relationships Neophytes and Veterans.......2002-02-22
I highly recommend this book for ANYONE considering getting into a relationship, already in a relationship or recovering from a failed relationship. Not only does it comprehensively explore issues and problems in relationships, it clearly defines what exactly "love" is and what it truly means to love someone; for it is more than an emotion, it is consistency, deed and action. This book not only helps you learn about your own personality and character flaws, it shows you how to recognize them in others and how to transform your own personal shortcomings into proactive, productive approaches internally and within the context of a healthy relationship. There is such a thing as "false love." Where do you stand?
Breaks False Illusions many have about Relationships.......2001-06-02
Great material, should be taught in the Public School systems accross America. They breakdown the many Illusions held by men and women about Relationships and introduce ways to create REAL lasting Monogamous healthy Love.
