A thrilling new adventure.......2007-08-03
This book is about another exciting adventure with Nancy Drew and her two friends Bess and George. It all starts when a pigeon drops down from somewhere in the sky. Nancy reads a secret message and the mystery begins. Before she can solve that mystery, however, she gets involved in another mystery involving a girl's grandmother. She eventually finds out that the two mysteries are linked. This is an exciting, suspenseful book, full of twists and turns. I highly recommend it!
Enjoy Nancy Drew again. .......2007-05-19
Enjoyed these books as a young girl. Like the updated versions for readers today. This is a great gift for a young mystery reader.
ANOTHER Nancy Drew that I love!.......2006-10-02
I have read BOTH versions of Password to Larkspur Lane, AND have seen the movie Nancy Drew Detective (1938) on televsion more than once. I have always liked this Nancy Drew like many others that I have read; though I have liked both versions. I have in general liked the originals better than the "new stories for today's readers". The original Nancy Drews paint a picture of life in the Thirties and early Forties, when there were no automatic transmissions, dial phones, transistor radios, or televsions, much less DVD's, audio CD's, automated teller machines, PC's. Indeed, in the era when the original Nancy Drews were written, THERE WERE NOT EVEN MUNTZ TV'S! Two facets of Password to Larkspur Lane stand out, and are particularly funny. One is the use of the phrase "singing horses" as password, changing it from "blue bells". Imagine horses singing into microphones! I can see WHY those gangsters chose "singing horses" as password, as larks are associated with singing, and spurs with riding horses.
That is NOT the REAL origin of the word "larkspur", but the gangsters knew that Dr. Spires HEARD the word "blue bells" used, so changed it to something SUGGESTING larkspurs. Nancy at first could not figure out why the flowers were called larkspurs, as horses do not sing and larks do not suggest horseback riding, but THEN could see why "singing horses" was chosen. (Mister Ed can sing, but that's about all.) The other funny part was Dr. Bull's use of a dummy telephone to pretend to call the cops.
Dr. Bull, called Bell in the new version, could not see why Nancy WANTED him to call the cops, or why she called it a dummy telephone. Nancy wanted him to call the police to get the racketeers arrested, and she declared "the telephone is a dummy because there are no___" but stopped short of saying "wires"
as the quack nut-doctor saw HIMSELF that this telephone was not hooked up to switching machinery, and ccould not fool Nancy. As there were no cell phones in 1933 or even 1966, such a phone as Dr. Bull/Bell used WAS a dummy telephone! (Whether this counterfeit sanatorium HAD a real phone is not clear.) At all events, a friend of mine called a dummy telephone a BULL TULLOPHONE, Bull Tull for short, and drew pictures of pairs of phones, one hooked up with letter-number phone number, the one with no wires all-digits, to show dislike for digitization! Then there was the happy ending when police, her father, and Ned flew in to arrest the participants in this racket, and Mrs. Mary Eldridge's reunion with her nephew John, his wife, and little Marie. ALl in all, a very good Nancy Drew.

Book Description
Historical RomanceLarge Print EditionGarlocks narrative and dialogue lend a rich visual, almost cinematic, flavor . . .Publishers WeeklyKristin Anderson had never left home before, but no one could stop her from going to Montana to take possession of Larkspur, the ranch she had inherited. At 23, she was considered a spinster, but she stood tall, wound her braids primly around her head, and tucked a derringer in her purse. She had no idea that shed be assailed by gunslingers and land grabbers the minute she got to Montanaor that the old foreman at her ranch was a young, lanky, secretive, cowboy who made her heart skip a beat . . .
Download Description
When 23-year-old Kristen Anderson received word that her uncle had died and left her his Larkspur ranch in Montana, she at least had a choice in life. Relegated to the role of servant in her brother's house, she had accepted her fate, but now she had a chance to live on her own. Over her brother's violent opposition, she boarded the train in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. On her arrival in Big Timber, Montana, she found a suspiciously eager buyer waiting to purchase the ranch she had yet to see. With a little help from a local citizen, she evaded the schemer and made her way to the ranch, only to find two men living on her land: one young, strong, and with ideas of his own about the property; the other sad, senile, and completely dependent. Kristen had inherited trouble with her legacy--and mystery. Would the two men help her fight the venal Forsythe forces who sought to wrench the ranch from her? Would she meet life or death here? Would she discover undying hatred--or eternal love?

Not as good as most of her books.......2006-08-15
I didnt like this one as good as her others. I did learn a few things in this book about the souix and ofcource the larkspur.
Splendid. Grade: A-.......2004-08-25
For me, Dorothy Garlock is another new author. In LARKSPUR, Garlock held my interest from the opening page to the final word.
Kristin Anderson is a Wisconsin charmer, blessed with Nordic features, and a Montana ranch. Tired of being an unpaid servant, Kristin firmly says goodbye to her wretched brother, his insipid wife, and their spoiled children. She leaves with both dread and delirium and heads west to her inheritance -- a Montana ranch called Larkspur.
In Montana, things are complicated. It seems others would like to own Kristin's land. It seems someone else already owns a section -- the ranch house. Buck Lenning does not relish sharing his house, let alone his life with an intruding woman. However, through necessity, they join forces and finally join their hearts.
Dorothy Garlock does a fine job on this story. Kristin Anderson is hardworking and kind, yet the author holds the line and does not turn the heroine into a "superwoman". Buck Anderson is understanding, tender, and tough. Dorothy Garlock wonderfully depicts his gentle care for the old man suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Dorothy Garlock built a wonderful gritty western romance. This author stirred this reader with talent and storytelling ability. Yes, LARKSPUR was a splendid book. Finding a new author to savor is such fun!

This IS one of her better ones.......2003-01-09
Man, I sat down and read this story all day. I just couldn't stop. I kept wondering, "if I put it down, I won't know what happens next---" in the sense that----
A rancher is out in the wilderness, defending property of an attractive woman who comes to the wilderness, to the Larkspur, to have something of her own. She finds this rancher dude there.
Its a slow blossoming romance, but sweet. The suspense part was when was the land grabber gonna attack? Were the Indians hostile?
Who was the little old timer? Was her brother gonna come and get her and make her come home? Would this be her home with this man?
It was good. Made you feel like you were in the story.
Out on the western frontier, miles from anywhere. Indians and gunslingers at every turn---would they find love, too?
A real shoot em up! Its good.
Exciting and very entertaining.......2002-01-02
A great collection of characters, like all of the Dorothy Garlock stories, that should entertain even the pickiest readers. This was an extremely entertaining story, however, not my favorite of hers. Still - it's a story that shouldn't be missed! It's very entertaining, suspenseful, romantic, and full of exciting twists. Ms. Garlock is the best creator of characters. I hope, as other readers will too, that Dillon Tallman will come back in another of Ms. Garlock's stories. My favorite thing about the Dorothy Garlock stories, is that characters from other books will return and give you a continuing glance of what is occuring in their lives, long after you finish the novel they were a key character in. Ms. Garlock is currently my favorite storyteller... you are sure to venture into a remarkable journey with every story. Enjoy!!!
Great Story.......1999-11-20
Dorothy Garlock is one of the best romance writers of our time. This book is just one example of her outstanding work. This is one of the first books from her that I read. Since then I have read almost all of them. I can not say enough about Larkspur. If you haven't read it then I definately reccommend that you order it right now. I too would like to see more stories with any of the Tallmans in it.

Customer Reviews:
Great Series.......2005-10-19
I just love this series. I've read it many times and decided to purchase it off Amazon for my own. Lawana Blackwell has a unique style of writing that makes you feel like you are actually in the time period. Her other books are great as well. Check them out.
Great characters and beautiful story!.......2005-05-03
This was the second of Lawana Blackwell's books that I read, giving me a glimpse of how consistently good she is. Since then, I have read everything she has written (I just bought Table by the Window) and can't get enough of them. The Widow of Larkspur Inn was especially endearing because of the people Blackwell incorporated into the story. Gresham is a place where I think all of us would like to live, surrounded by loving (and sometimes quirky) people who enrich lives with their humor and spirit. I believe that some of the Blackwell's strongest characters reside in Gresham; people who are unique and carry the story all the way to the last page. Just realize that you may want to order the next two books in the series before you finish this one...that way you can move right on into the next part of the Gresham Chronicles.
What a fantastic book!.......2003-02-11
This book was really wonderful. The main character, Julia Hollis had so much strength, faith, hope and love. Julia was married to Phillip, who had hidden his love of gambling. She was forced out of her home when Phillip died because of his gambling debts. She moves her family (3 children and her maid/friend) to Gresham to the Larkspur Inn. The Larkspur Inn was the only property of her husbands that the Bank didn't want. She returns the Larkspur Inn back into the beautiful Inn it was in its glory days. Lawanna Blackwell makes you feel as if you are there in Gresham and all the tenants and the owner and her family are your friends! She meets the vicar, Andrew Phelps, whom she forms a friendship with. I can't tell you what happens with the rest of their lives, because it would spoil the book. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book and enjoy! I loved this book so much, I just ordered the other two in this series!!
Lawana Blackwell.......what a great writer........2003-01-29
I picked up "The Widow of Larkspur Inn" at a used book store because I could not find the books I was looking for. Had never heard of Lawana Blackwell and this was the only one of her books there. I did not read it right away, but once I started it I didn't want to quit. She is one of the best writers I have read. She is quite unique......has such wonderful true to life characters. It is hard for me to believe I had not heard of her or read her books before now and now have a list of all her books...obtained from Amazon.com.....and can hardly wait to read them all.
Lack of Climax.......2002-11-27
I was excited about reading this book. Until I realized there is no good climax, and I had to put it down less than 1/2 way through. On to the next book - are there any good books out there?

Book Description
Becky Hale Declares War Against Conventional Medicine. . . . . .after watching her young cousin die at the hands of a prominent Cincinnati physician. She returns home to Larkspur, Indiana, promoting a gentler, herbalistic approach to medicine, while preaching against the evils of university educated doctors. Ephraim Morgan, fresh from Lexington, Kentucky's Transylvania University, arrives at his cousin's home in Larkspur with plans to set up a medical practice. What he hasn't planned, is finding a staunch adversary in his cousin's pretty hired-girl, Becky Hale. When opposing medical philosophies collide on the Indiana prairie, will new love succumb to pride and distrust? Or will God provide a cure?
Customer Reviews:
good historical romance.......2006-12-20
Becky Hale watched her nine-year old cousin, Teddy, die after three days of purging and bleeding. She has despised doctors ever since. Becky has studied Dr. Samuel Thompson's method of healing with botanical medicine and believes God has sent her on a mission to protect the citizens of Larkspur by practicing herbal healing.
Ephraim Morgan is the new doctor in town and he hopes to practice medicine in Larkspur. It's a small community, so it's to be expected Ephraim and Becky meet. He's amused by her attitude toward doctors, but she wants no part of him. Their emotional collisions keep the reader entertained. Ramona Cecil has written an engaging story of love and faith in a period where the practice of healing was rather primitive. This is a new writer for me, and I'm looking forward to more of her work. If you like historical romance, you'll enjoy Larkspur.
Breathtakingly beautiful.......2006-12-01
LARKSPUR will transport you to another time and place. The writing is beautifully descriptive, allowing you to live the story with the characters. Ephraim and Becky are real people with a believable conflict--my heart ached as I waited for them to reconcile their differences and find a compromise. In reading the book, I gained knowledge of 1800's Indiana and medical practices during that time--all very skillfully woven into a storyline that held my attention from page one until the end. I highly recommend this debut novel by Ramona K. Cecil, and I eagerly anticipate her next offering.
Customer Reviews:
A great read. A gifted author........2002-02-08
I enjoyed every minute of the time spent reading this series. Lawanna Blackwell is a gifted author who spends the requisite time to craft novels that are encouraging, heart warming and true to life. Unlike so many authors who write in this genre, Ms. Blackwell's work does not assault/insult the intelligence of her readership.
I have read every book of hers published to date and each leaves me waiting with bated breath for the next. If the reader of this review seeks trashy and poorly written romances published under the guise of "christian, inspirational romance", then Ms. Blackwell wouldn't be the author of choice. If, however, he/she is seeking fiction that is based on sound theology, that is entertaining yet substantive, then I strongly recommend this author's body of work.
Gresham Chronicles.......2001-10-17
These three books are a joy to read! Characters are well
developed and believable. There is joy and love in the stories,
since the reader anticipates happy endings and moral dilemmas
being resolved. Lawana Blackwell has a gift of writing. She
has also written the Victorian Serenade series of 4 books and
Book 1 of her London series. Keep writing, Lawana. I am
greatly looking forward to Book 2 of the London set, and more.
Readers can identify with her plots and empathize with
character's moral decisions. Wonderful writer!
The Gresham Chronicles.......2000-09-26
Excellent books. Keep my interest couldn't put the book down
Widow at Larkspur Inn.......2000-03-11
The pages fly by in this book! A recent widow finds strength she did not know she had. The romantic villiage she and her children find themselves in is full of well developed characters. A great story of triumph over obstacles, and love growing softly. Tell Lawana Blackwell to keep on writing!
The Widow of Larkspur Inn is heartwarming and down to earth*.......2000-02-16
This first book in the Gresham Chronicles revolves around a little country town and its inhabitants. The characters are well developed and woven delightfully together into this series. The reader is privy to the characters thoughts and emphasizes with them as they go about their daily lives. I highly recommend it and you are sure to continue with the next two in the series by Ms. Blackwell. Enoyable reading!

Customer Reviews:
Secret Life of Fairies.......2006-08-04
I rate the book with 5 stars because my 7 year old daughter loves it. As for Kirkus Reviews -- I hope that Amazon did not pay for their opinion.
What was it about The Secret Life that bothers the Kirkus reviewer the most? The Eurocentric illustrations or the missing icing recipe for the fairy cakes? Eurocentric -- get over it! Icing on the cakes... ever heard of Pilsbury? Who cares about an authentic field guide for fairies -- it's fantasy! Get out of the New Age, it's 2006.
Enchanting!.......2001-03-08
My imagination went wild as soon as I opened this charming book! Did you ever wonder what fairies eat? What kind of clothes do they wear? Where you can find them? This beautifully illustrated book will give you the answers. You can't help but believe! Great fun for children and children-at-heart. I highly recommend!
