Book Description

A charming and moving novel about female friendship and the experiences that knit us together-even when we least expect it.

Walker and Daughter is Georgia Walker's little yarn shop, tucked into a quiet storefront on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The Friday Night Knitting Club was started by some of Georgia's regulars, who gather once a week to work on their latest projects and to chat-and occasionally clash-over their stories of love, life, and everything in between.

Georgia has her hands full, juggling the demands of running the store and raising her spunky teen daughter, Dakota, by herself. Thank goodness for Anita, her mentor and dear friend, and the rest of the members of the knitting club-who are just as varied as the skeins of yarn in the shop's bins. There's Peri, a prelaw student turned handbag designer; Darwin, a somewhat aloof feminist grad student; and Lucie, a petite, quiet woman who's harboring some secrets of her own.

However, unexpected changes soon throw these women's lives into disarray, and the shop's comfortable world gets shaken up like a snow globe. James, Georgia's ex, decides that he wants to play a larger role in Dakota's life-and possibly Georgia's as well. Cat, a former friend from high school, returns to New York as a rich Park Avenue wife and uneasily renews her old bond with Georgia. Meanwhile, Anita must confront her growing (and reciprocated) feelings for Marty, the kind neighborhood deli owner. And when the unthinkable happens, they realize what they've created: not just a knitting club, but a sisterhood

5 out of 5 stars Love it! Why Am I Not Surprised!!! :o).......2007-09-20

I bought this unabridged audio because I could relate to the topic. I belong to many beading classes... mainly because I love the days I can bond with other women via the beading. It's a wonderful experience, so I had a feeling I would love this book. However, I had no idea that this read would capture my heart and soul the way it did. Each character was so rich in their identity and I loved the way that they were given voice by Carrington McDuffie. The author Kate Jacobs must be so excited to know that her book is soon to be a movie starring Julia Roberts!!! How exciting is that! She will be perfect for the lead role of Georgia Walker, a strong single mother and owner of the knit store "Walker & Daughter" ...... I wonder who will play the other incredible cast of characters. I just loved them all and was so sad when the story ended. Truly this is one of my favorite books this year. I highly recommend it. I'd also like to recommend "The Knitting Circle" ... another truly fabulous book! 5 starz JMHO //(*_*)\\

1 out of 5 stars Big disappointment.......2007-09-14

I was so excited about this book I bought 3 copies - one for myself, one for my friend who's preparing to open a yarn shop and start a knitting club, and the other for our knitting mentor. I read the book as soon as it arrived, and now I'm almost embarrased to give it to my friends. I was really disappointed in the quality of the writing and felt even I could do a much better job. The characters were shallow, the wording was awkward in many places, and lots of things didn't make much sense. For example, it was not believable that Georgia would keep James' letters for all those years and not read them. She would have thrown them away! The chapter about the crazy film student who was looking for Julia Roberts (what a coincedence, since she just happens to star in the upcoming movie) was strange and added nothing to the story. And what was the purpose of the use of the f-word? It didn't fit the characters. I also figured out the ending way too soon. Plus, knitting had very little to do with the book. When in Scotland, around all those sheep, for instance, there wasn't even a mention of the great yarns that were available!!! You'd think a yarn shop owner would spend time checking out the yarn and how it was produced. Tragic missed opportunity to add something authentic to a book about knitting. This novel was too predictable throughout. Save your money and wait for the movie. Hopefully it will be better.

5 out of 5 stars Inviting, Cozy Book .......2007-08-07

I enjoyed this book so much that I'm rather taken aback at how divided the reviews are. I found the book to be like a blanket, warm and cozy and something you want to curl up in. I don't knit, but the references to the wool and the process made it seem very inviting.

The characters were diverse - of varying ages, walks of life and economic circumstances - and written so vividly that I began to cast them as if for a TV show. Overall, the book is about love and friendship and finding ourselves, with the store and knitting being the central theme that brings most of the characters together.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was sad to see it come to a conclusion, ending my connection with the colorful and enjoyable characters. Like some of the other reviewers, I would have liked a different ending because I'd grown attached to everyone, but I did see it coming and the author did tie it all together well.

My biggest disappointment in the book was discovering it's Kate Jacob's first and now I'll have to wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars A one-of-a-kind tale of true camaraderie.......2007-08-07

Featuring tracks every three minutes for easy bookmarking, The Friday Night Knitting Club is the audiobook version of professional editor Kate Jacobs' debut novel, tantalizingly narrated by recording artist Carrington MacDuffie. Once a week, the regulars of Georgia Walker's little yarn shop gather for tips of knitting - and end up learning much more as they swap stories about themselves, their loves, their lives, and virtually everything else. When sudden change shake the women to their cores, they discover they've created not just a knitting club, but a tightly bonded sisterhood. Soon to be turned into a major motion picture starring Julia Roberts, The Friday Night Knitting Club is a one-of-a-kind tale of true camaraderie, highly recommended. 10 CDs, 12 1/2 hours, unabridged.

2 out of 5 stars Got better as it went on.......2007-07-28

I'm giving this two stars: averaging one star for the first half and three for the second half. Through the first half of the book I kept thinking, "how are they going to make a movie of this?" It was just all these seperate women and their individual stories and none seemed to have anything to do with the others. They did all come together at the end, though. The first thing that really got my attention was in Darwin's story. She was talking about how she was a good girl, but she didn't want to be a good girl. She said that she didn't want to burn money for her dead anscestors on Chinese New Year. Having grown up in Asia, I can tell you no one burns money or anything else during Chinese New Yea (which lasts for 15 days). Money is burned for dead anscestors at the Feast of the Hungry Ghosts. I just hate it when authors write about something they don't know about and don't bother to check it out. She also mentioned about not wanting to go the Sunday School and skipping church. Anyone going to church likely isn't burning money for dead anscestors in any case. The part about Julia Roberts was weird, too. If the lady was so certain Ms. Roberts was going to show up at that particular yarn store on that particular, why not just hang around by the front door? If someone bought and returned the same item all day long at my store (if I had one) I'd put a stop to it. And why did she stagger in slurring something about "roooobbbeerrrs" at the end of the day? Was she drunk? Overheated? Dehydrated? Deranged? That was just kind of left dangling. I also didn't understand about the letters. Georgia had gotten two letters from James that she never opened. Yet he was sending checks to help with Dakota's expenses and she opened all those. How is it she opened the later envelopes that contained checks but not the first two where he said he wanted to get back together? I wondered, too, about the evening gowns Georgia knitted. If she was capable of doing that, why did she wait to be asked? She could have knitted a few and sold them to some boutiques. For someone who managed to be a single parent and run her own business and do a good job at both, she seemed to be short-sighted about breaking into the fashion business. Peri got right down to business with her knitted purses and had them in store windows in no time. And my final question was about the trip to Scotland. Georgia decided Dakota could miss a little school since it was "just seventh grade". I thought they'd only be gone a week. When it was revealed they spend a month in Scotland, I figured she'd just missed the last week of school. Then they came back and Dakota had to go back to school. It doesn't matter what grade you're in, missing a month means you're going to have repeat the grade. No one can miss that much school. They'd probably withdraw your enrollment.

I wasn't too impressed with the character who tricked her date into getting her pregnant. That was just uncalled for. Who conducts themselves like that? I also could have done without the bad language. These are all college educated women, surely they didn't have to resort to four-letter words to get their points across.

It could have been a good book, but there were so many thing that just made no sense to me. I think the movie might be better, though. If they just hit the highlights it should make a good story.

Book Description

"The Light of Evening" is a story of attachments, the attachment to land and especially the attachment between mother and daughter, who yearn for closeness but are also estranged. From her hospital bed in Dublin, the elderly Dilly awaits the visit of her daughter, Eleanora, from London. The epochs of her life pass before her: emigrating to America in the 1920s, a romantic liaison, and the destiny that brought her back to Ireland and marriage into the formerly grand property called Rusheen. She also retraces Eleanora's precipitate marriage to a foreigner, which alienated mother and daughter even more, and Dilly's heart-rending letters sent over the years in a determination to reclaim her daughter. But Eleanora's visit does not prove to be the glad reunion Dilly prayed for. And in her hasty departure, Eleanora leaves behind a secret journal of their stormy relationship—a revelation that brings the novel to a shocking close.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Poetic but disjointed.......2007-09-29

I sometimes think that well regarded and established writers get away with flawed efforts because of their faithful readership (as opposed to younger, newer writers, whose technique is more closely scrutinized). An example of this, in my opinion, is this novel by Edna O'Brien, a beautifully lyrical writer, and someone I genuinely admire. She can really carry a reader a long way with the fluid beauty of her prose. Her sentences sound purely Irish and yet like nothing or no one you've heard before. Her command of language is stunning. And yet the story line in this book felt sorely lacking to me. I didn't really understand either character -- I didn't feel either was fully realized. Nor was I able to see or understand the rift that grew between them. That rift seemed to have been meant as the point of the tale, and yet O'Brien never quite gets to it. The writing is elliptical in this regard, as if we're looking at a star in the sky but can't quite see it straight on. The book felt disjointed to me, a bit piecemeal, and underdeveloped. And yet the prose, the prose, the prose...

2 out of 5 stars very disappointing read.......2007-01-27

This book held my interest initially when the mother, Dilly, is a young girl and travels against her parents' wishes to America. The descriptions of what life was like for a young domestic were illuminating and offered interesting food for thought on the class structure (Irish emigrees still subjugating their own countrymen). And the letters from Dilly to her daughter, Eleanora, were real and full of life. Sadly, all of the novel that centers on Eleanora and her sad life is just empty in feel--I couldn't wait to be finished reading those sections. If, metaphorically, O'Brien wishes for the reader to see Dilly as the one full of life despite her impending death, then she succeeded. Otherwise, this novel simply fails on almost all levels to be either an enjoyable read or a book with any true enlightenment about the mother/daughter relationship.

5 out of 5 stars O'Brien's Talent Strong as Ever.......2007-01-14

It's an intense pleasure of the senses to read Edna O'Brien and this novel is gorgeously written - I trust this author as I read and I admire how visual her writing is. I long for things I've never known when I read her. I can't read this on a bus - I must be in the bath or on the couch (with rain out the window) with tea or hot chocolate, as then I'm enveloped; her writing deserves full attention.

2 out of 5 stars Well written but basically depressing.......2007-01-10

This book got good reviews from professional reviewers so I bought it. Big mistake. It's basically a rehash of all the old Irish immigrant stories, although Dilly and daughter are not dirt poor. Reviews have said the book is about mother love and the push and pull of passion. Maybe. The faux "Joycean" stream of conciousness writing is hard to follow and unenlightening. This author is not for me. Sorry!

5 out of 5 stars The Mother Daughter Relationship.......2006-12-06

The most difficult of the parent-child relationships is the one between mother and daughter. If you don't think so, just tell a woman she is acting like her mother, but don't do it while she's holding anything sharp.

In this book Ms. O'Brien explores this relationship between a mother in the hospital dying of cancer and her daughter who has moved away. As the book progresses we find that the lives, the actions of the two women are not all that different.

In her youth mother had left her family for New York. More recently daughter has gone off to London. Ms. O'Brien uses this to bring out the differences in the generations, or is it the changes in the times in which they live?

Finally I've got to say that Ms. O'Brien confirms her Irish literary background with the tragic overtones in the story. There seems to be something about the literature from Irish authors that prevents them from having happy, normal, well adjusted personalities. She also confirms her status of being a major novelist of our time.

Book Description

The New York Times bestselling authors take a journey into the Cape Light of Christmas past.

As the citizens of Cape Light deck the halls for a Christmas to remember, the curmudgeonly Lillian Warwick has been confined to her bed with pneumonia. Cared for by her daughters, Emily and Jessica, she lets her thoughts drift back to the holiday season of 1955, to the magical time when she first met Oliver Warwick-the dashing man who would become her husband.

Back then, Lillian was beautiful, spirited, and idealistic, and Oliver was a wonderful man who took a real joy in living. As she recounts those romantic early days to her daughters and faces the mistakes she's made, she is reminded of a time when she had much to be grateful for-and of all the special gifts Christmas can bring.

And, to cap off this special, life-altering holiday season, there just might be a winter wedding on the horizon...

5 out of 5 stars Don't Hesitate to Read These Books!.......2007-05-06

I have read several books by Thomas Kinkade of this Cape Light series, including this one. While they are all related, you can pick up a random one and very easily know what is going on as the author will review the characters. I've read them out of sequence but it's been very easy to follow along. This one I especially enjoyed as I loved the flashbacks to Lillian's life. I guess the only thing I don't understand is that Lillian runs away against her parents' wishes to marry Oliver, and in another book in the series, her daughter Jessica marries someone against her wishes. You'd think she'd be more tolerant after what she went through with the estrangement from her parents.

I'd love to live in a town this close where everyone cares about each other and steps in when they are needed. While I'm not overly religious myself, these books have just enough religion in them that you don't feel like you're in church or being preached to. It's just comforting.....don't hesitate to read any of these books.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-01-15

I have read all of Thomas Kinkadebooks. this book is one of the best.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Tale from quaint Cape Light.......2007-01-09

Each book in this series features a different character in the quaint little New England town just North of Boston called Cape Light. Each story brings those characters to life, so you feel like you've gone back home to visit all your friends and relatives again. This particular story zeroes in on Lillian Warwick, the fiesty, often sarcastic grandmother of Emily, the town's mayor. She isn't your typical "warm, cuddly grandmotherly" type, that's for sure, but in this episode she's fallen down the attic stairs trying to retrieve a box of old photos and letters that are very precious to her. She winds up in the hospital, and needs a cast on one arm and one leg. As she's home recovering from her injuries the holiday season approaches. She does a lot of reminiscing about her youth as she re-reads those old letters and looks at the photos. The story keeps flashing back to the 1950's when she was a young woman, and you gain insight into this character's past. At the same time, you're enjoying all the preparations being made for the current holiday season, getting reacquainted with what's going on in the lives of all your other Cape Light friends. An excellent read, during the holiday season or any other time of the year. If you've read and enjoyed the previous Cape Light stories, you'll enjoy going back for another visit in the pages of this book. The last couple of pages get just a little too sappy for my taste, but otherwise - a truly excellent read!!

5 out of 5 stars Cape Light Series is the best!.......2007-01-09

I love the Cape Light series! This book is great!!!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Kinkade/Spencer Book.......2007-01-05

Cape Light is a charming, friendly town filled with believable characters who lead normal, yet interesting lives. Although a work of fiction, these stories bring a feeling of home-coming the moment I open one of their books. Great fire-side reading for those of us who like enjoyable, clean, and posative Christian fiction. The romantic attractions of the book's characters makes it a great alternative to all who are tired of the usual romantic fiction, plus the Kinkade/Spencer series offer a bonus of having thought-provoking situations and Christian ethics included to give us something to mull on long after the last page of each novel.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars a little disappointing.......2007-06-02

The heroine, Rebecca seems overly stuck on her grief with losing her late husband, Randy. I thought it dragged out way too long, and started to show a pattern with Britton's books, that often seem to have the heroine as the only one who needs to deal with some inner crisis. It was very frustrating reading several of Britton's NASCAR books, and finding this pattern. It's like, why isn't there something wrong with the hero in her books??? Why is it always the woman who seems to be holding things up?
Though, the most recent of her NASCAR novels, To the Limit did improve in this respect. I will keep reading her material and see if there is continued improvement in how she casts the heroine.

5 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS BOOK!.......2007-05-30

Anytime you can read a book and laugh at loud and finish the book with a smile, you have a keeper. Once again, Ms.Britton, keeps me entertained and yes, educated (about NASCAR - who'd a thunk!) and wanting more. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to get Total Control (yep, already preordered it)!

5 out of 5 stars You will laugh and cry with NASSAR in the background - ENJOY !.......2007-02-27

On The Edge by Pamela Britton is G-Rated romance novel. You don't miss the steam - the story and the characters are great. Widow of famous race car driver Rebecca hires a new driver and trys not fall for him as well. All the previous characters show up in this novel - which is always fun - A GREAT AFTERNOON READ ! When Lindsey shows up at Newman Motor sports looking for Rebecca Newman, Becca is shocked and amazed at the ten year old's spunk. Lindsey is very insistent that her dad, Adam Drake, deserves a shot racing for Becca's NASCAR truck team.

Adam arrives at Becca's home in a panic searching for his daughter. Once Adam is calm, Becca offers him an opportunity to drive for her. It takes a few weeks but Becca eventually convinces Adam to take the chance and when he does, it pays off big. Adam is an awesome truck driver and Becca knows hiring him is going to be great for the company, it means she'll be around him a lot, which is good and bad. Good because she is very attracted to Adam, but bad because after losing her husband Randy four years ago, Becca doesn't think she is ready to date again. Also, if she is going to be his boss a personal relationship with Adam is out. Adam has other ideas though.

Becca finds herself in a professional bind, but she refuses to accept Adam's love and support. If she doesn't put her fears and pride aside, Adam might race right out of her life.

On The Edge is a tender story with emotion and excitement on every page. Lindsey is adorable, Adam is a hunk, and Becca is a sweetheart. I fell in love with them instantly. The high-speed action on the track and the slow burning love off it, took On The Edge straight to victory lane for me!

Mariah Stewart continues to be a favorite author even though I did not rate The President's Daughter as high as I did some of her other titles. The basic plot is an old one, but Stewart included a few surprises that kept the story line moving. You will be mildly surprised at the conclusion. While it is not Stewart's best work, I'm glad I read it. True Stewart fans will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Super Political Thriller with a Touch of Romance Thrown in.......2004-05-03

Simon Keller quit his job as a journalist when the paper he worked for wouldn't print one of his stories without knowing his source. Out of work, he accepts an offer from an old college prof, who is now a small press publisher, to write a book about late President Graham Hayward, who many consider to be just about the most honest and ethical man to ever grace the White House. President Hayward has been dead a long time, but that doesn't mean Keller's book won't have repercussions, because Hayward's son is now running for the presidency.

Simon takes home tons of documents to review. He sets up interviews with colleagues, friends and family of the late president, and during one of these sessions he is stunned when Alzheimer's victim, Miles Kendell, tells him how he and his friend Graham once loved the same woman. If this is true, if President Hayward had a secret affair, it's news that will rock the political world.

The woman, Blythe Pierce, was the darling of the Washington social circuit back in the late 60s. She was an Ambassador's daughter, rich, beautiful and cultured and Simon discovers that she had been killed in a hit and run accident in 1972. The driver who struck her down has never been found and the sole beneficiary of Blythe's multi million dollar estate was her college roommate, Jude McDermott.

Thirty-year-old Dina McDermott owns a landscaping and nursery company on the upper end of Maryland's eastern shore. She is doing well and is close to her mother as her father had died in her infancy. When she firsts sees Simon she is attracted to him. Simon is attracted to her as well, for more reasons than one, because she bears a striking resemblance to the long dead Blythe. Simon knows right away that she is President Hayward's illegitimate daughter. And soon others know and Dina's life is in grave danger, because this is a secret someone is will to kill to keep buried. Fortunately for Dina, she is not just a story for Simon. It's personal and he puts her safety and well being above everything else, but can he find out who is after Dina and can he stop them?

Ms. Stewart has written a first class political thriller that had me on the edge of my seat. Maybe the romance was a little slow heating up, but I don't think it made any difference. This fast-paced story was peopled with characters that will live with you long after you put away the book and it'll have you coming back for more of Ms. Stewart's fine work.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre..........2004-03-02

"The President's Daughter" wasnt a bad book, but it wasnt great either. The characters had absolutely no chemistry. I felt that the label of "romantic suspense" was misleading. There was ABSOLUTELY NO romance in this story. All in all, I'd say that this book was pretty forgetable. I wouldnt recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Fair, at best........2002-12-11

The dialog was stiff, the chemistry between the two main characters non-existent,and the book could have been reduced by 90 or 100 pages and still told the story.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining plot, Well written characters, quick read.......2002-10-05

I got this on a whim. I enjoy fictional stories about conspiracy at high levels, this seemed like a good fit. I don't like reviews that give away the ending, so I won't go into great detail. However, one of the main characters, Simon, has the task of writing a memoir for Graham Hayward, past President of the U.S., for the purpose of transferring positive memories of him onto the son, who is planning a presidential bid.

No surprise here, but the supposedly unblemished reputation of the President is uncovered. The ease of this discovery is surprising though, especially since it's been covered up for 30 years, and one visit to a rambling Alzeheimer's patient reveals the truth.

However, while somewhat predictable, I have found this book a captivating page-turner, and the characters are well written and explored fairly thoroughly. I'm looking forward to more of this author's work.

Pajama Light is a first-rate book about a young girl and her father taking their nightly walk along the coastline to the nearby lighthouse. But don't take my word for it, take DJ's. My four-year-old son often chooses this book for his bedtime story. It's masterfully told in rhyme, a perfect style for four-year-olds who are just beginning to grasp this concept. Gale Sypher Jacob's words are well-chosen; soft and melodic, echoing not only the coastal setting, but also the gorgeous pastel illustrations, which change in color and intensity as the story (and time of evening) progresses. The climax--when the lighthouse light first begins to flash--never fails to thrill DJ (and me). We both strongly recommend this book.

This is a lovely story about the special love between a young girl and her dad. Their before bedtime ritual takes them on a short trip to the nearby lighthouse. The end of the day has come and so it is time to say goodnight. Written in rhyme, this story is a delight to read.

Soft, gentle illustrations capture the beauty of the ocean, lighthouse and surrounding woods and fields, and make the reader feel as if he is a part of the story. Pajama Light is a perfect bedtime story.

5 out of 5 stars Short and sweet book for my 3 year old girl.......2006-06-09

This is a great bedtime book! It's got great rhythm. It's not too long so I can read it more than once and not turn the bedtime routine into an eternity! The illustrations are beautiful. The colors are rich and deep.

This book is great!

5 out of 5 stars My four year old daughter loves this book!.......2006-06-05

I recently bought this book for my four year old daughter and her father who read together at bedtime. They both really enjoy the story of a little girl and her father who take a walk at dusk to say goodnight to a lighthouse. The pictures are beautiful and the story was written with a gentle sing-song quality which is very calming at bedtime. It transports us to our favorite beach vacation memories!

Book Description

Jasmine Houston, a widow with a young son, agrees to harbor former slaves at her horse farm outside of Lowell, even though her father, a plantation owner, supports slavery. When a boardinghouse keeper unwittingly becomes involved with a traveling peddler who sells something infinitely more valuable than shoes, Jasmine is devastated to discover that her son and the former slaves have been kidnapped. Jasmine's determination to free them threatens to undo her family as well as the ties that bind the burgeoning textile industry to the southern cotton growers. Book two in the bestselling Lights of Lowell.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Aterrific historical tale .......2004-12-08

In 1849 Lowell, Massachusetts, widowed Jasmine Houston and her two years old son Spencer are making new friends to include a closer relationship with her brother-in-law Nolan, an antislavery author. Jasmine has also finally committed herself to work against slavery by becoming a conductor on the Underground Railroad. She has regained her equilibrium and balance lost during her marriage to the late Bradley.

Her father requests she come home to the Willows in Mississippi because her mother and her Mammy are deathly ill and want to see her. Nolan accompanies his sister-in-law and nephew on the trek south. At the Willows, Mammy obtains a deathbed vow from Jasmine to free her son, which she does before returning to Lowell. However, ethical deeds do not prevent bad things happening to good people as her son is abducted perhaps for her allowing escaped slaves to hide on her farm; feeling like Job without his faith, Jasmine questions all she believes in.

Book two of the Lights of Lowell series (see A TAPESTRY OF HOPE) is a terrific historical tale that brings to life a bygone era when people had to choose sides. Jasmine is a fabulous protagonist raised on a southern plantation by parents who owned slaves, and had one Mammy raise her. Interestingly, the thriving mill city of Lowell in Northern Massachusetts is divided over slavery as the town depends on cotton from the south to keep the textile mills running and competitive with England. A LOVE WOVEN TRUE is a deep look at mid-nineteenth century America at least in two fronts as states, communities and families are divided over slavery.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Addition To This Series!.......2004-11-14

Ms. Peterson and Ms. Miller have continued with their "Lights of Lowell" series and this title is just as wonderful and inspiring as the last. This story is rich with histocial details, historical figures, and characters that the reader will grow to love and we the reader will experience their ups and downs, joys and heartaches.

Jasmine has moved on from the death of her first husband. She has made a life for herself and her son Spencer in Lowell, Ma. in a new home, with new friends. Her relationship with her brother-in-law Nolan is growing closer, and she has finally taken a stand on slavery as part of a group that has been helping those on the underground railroad on their way to Canada and freedom. Soon her world is turned upside down when she is requested to go back home to "The Willows". Her mother and her mammy are gravely ill and she is needed. When she is there Mammy askes her from her deathbed to find her own son and free him. Jasmine can do nothing less and with the help of Nolan she finds Mammy's son and takes him with his wife and son back to Lowell. Within no time life has fallen into a predictable but comfortable pattern until events happen that cause Jasmine to question her faith and to wonder what good could come from such despair.

This was a wonderfully emotional read that draw the reader in and transport them back to a time that is long past, but has had long ranging repurcussions into society today. This was a difficult topic to touch on (Slavery) and the author's have done so with grace and sensitivity. This is a read that I highly recommend and found not only inspirational but entertaining as well.

This book reels you in like a serpent. I found it jaw dropping and compelling and read it all in one evening! After I finished it I thought about it for hours and am still thinking about this amazing story!

4 out of 5 stars Spooky kid solves a mystery.......2006-01-05

Pregnant and freshly divorced, Jillian and daughter Gracie return to the summer home once owned by her grandmother for a new lease on life. It is on Pawley's Island that Jillian has both her most cherished and most painful memories, as her best friend Lauren disappeared without a trace 16 years earlier.

Gracie's apparent second sight divulges long buried secrets, forcing Jillian to face her greatest fears and befriend the guy who was accused of murdering Lauren and fled soon after. Now a successful architect, Linc has re-emerged, renamed himself, and returned to the island that he both loves and loathes. He is not prepared for the feelings that Jillian's presence invokes, and debates on leaving the past ... in the past.

Haunted by memories of childhood abuse and the loss of her beloved friends, Jillian at first discounts Gracie's ramblings about her imaginary friend (also named Lauren) until she realizes that there are far too many coincidences. New secrets and passions are revealed on the small island, as Jillian and Linc work together to discover what happened to Lauren all those years ago.

While the story is well written, with believable dialogue (thought Gracie could be grating after awhile), unfortunately, you don't need second sight to see where the story is going. You can pretty much predict the outcome, as it is really no mystery with all the foreshadowing the author provides. Despite its predictability, it is a solid and original story, with endearing characters. Don't miss "Falling Home" and "After the Rain," also by White. They are not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Another very good read.......2005-11-16

I really enjoyed this book, and I don't want to say too much as I don't want to give anything away. Good plot, although I did figure out some of it earlier on. Still very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read but one Author had me in hives!.......2005-07-18

This is a wonderful book..and something every mom and woman can relate to. All the stories were detailed and you can picture the story as if you were watching it in a movie theater...but this one author had a way of writing that can be compared to fingernails on a chalboard. To be fair to her I have never read any of her other stories or books...so maybe she does not write this way habitually...she can't possibly be doing that...because I see she is quite popular..but in this book Elizabth Beveraly's writing style can be compared to the style of a children's writer...ie..the author who wrote the If You give a Mouse a Cookie" series. She repeats herself over and over expressing the exact same thing paragraph after paragraph, uses the same words, to the point I was cringing through the whole story..simply because her writing style was so childlike as the narrator for her characters. Overall the book is an easy beach read...but that last story by the above mentioned author can really grate on your nerves unless you are prepared to read it as if you were reading "If you give a Mouse a Pancake" to your child...because that is the writing style this famous author chose. Hives aside...the stories are very fun, light and sweet...an enjoyable read....the first two stories would make great Lifetime Television movies..and so would the last story if you eliminate the repetitive narrartion style.

Like most of the books I have read by Rosalind Laker, it was not easy to put the bookmark in the page and go to sleep/work. I wanted to read, read, read. The characters are believable and just as you think you know where the storyline is going, it changes and ends a little differently to the usual "happily ever after". The story is set in England, commencing in 1890 and concentrates on jewellery design, gambling and love. As with most of her books, Laker seems to cut to the end too quickly but worth the read and very enjoyable. Read it, you'll love it!
