"Long before we do anything explicitly religious at all, we have to do something about the fire that burns within us," writes Ronald Rolheiser. "What we do with that fire, how we channel it, is our spirituality." From the opening chapter, where Rolheiser eloquently compares the burning spiritual fire of Mother Teresa, Janice Joplin, and Princess Diana, readers will be fully engaged in a unique and altogether fascinating discussion of Christian spirituality.

As a regular columnist for the Catholic Herald, Rolheiser has clearly honed his writing skills. Like an eloquent marriage counselor, he deftly tries to reconcile the rift between contemporary spirituality and Christianity. For example, he points to the four pillars that support a healthy marriage of Christianity and spirituality, which are "Private prayer and private morality. Social justice. Mellowness of heart and spirit. Community as a constitutive element of true worship." Building upon these pillars, Rolheiser delves into the more challenging marital tensions with chapters such as "Christ as the Basis for Christian Spirituality" and a "Spirituality of Sexuality." This is an excellent book for any Christian who has longs to create a more holy and lasting spiritual union. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Ronald Rolheiser makes sense of what is frequently a misunderstood word: spirituality. In posing the question "What is spirituality?" Father Rolheiser gets quickly to the heart of common difficulties with the subject, and shows through compelling anecdotes and personal examples how to channel that restlessness, that deep desire, into a healthy spirituality.

This book is for those searching to understand what Christian spirituality means and how to apply it to their own lives.  Rolheiser explains the nonnegotiables--the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, the centrality of the Incarnation, the sustenance of the spiritual life--and how spirituality necessarily impacts every aspect of human experience.  At the core of this readable, deeply revealing book is an explanation of God and the Church in a world that more often than not doubts the credibility of both.

3 out of 5 stars Classical Catholicism........2007-07-16

This review offers an anecdotal story. I read this book when it was first published in 1999. After reading the first three chapters, I was excited that this new voice was following in a few sets of footprints of progressive Catholic Leaders like Richard Rohr, Matt Fox, and Diarmuid O'Murchi, to name a few.

Then I got to chapter four only to discover that this was just another book on spirituality in the genre of Catholic orthodoxy. Having left the Catholic Church many years before this book was published, I wrote the author via email to comment on his book. I was surprised when he got back to me. While I don't remember the entirety of the author's remarks, I do remember that he was positive and kind. One point that he made, however, is that he thought that I would not find a home in another tradition. Having been out of the Catholic Church now for over twenty years, I can state categorically that the Church holds absolutely no influence over my spiritual life or my relationship with the ineffable which we all serve.

It is interesting to note that the Catholic Church has morphed even further rightward with the election of Ratzinger as Pope. From a historical perspective, I suppose this event is just a passing cloud on the backdrop of history. All extreme ideologies lose the force of their impact with time, as truth will overcome in the end.

While I agree with the author's fundamental thesis concerning our relationship to God, one does not need the Catholic Church as an intermediary to accomplish that goal. Contrary to the Pope's recent public comments, the Catholic Church represents one religion among many. To assert that the Catholic Church is the "one true" Church is an insult to the vast majority of people on the planet engaging meaningful work on behalf of justice outside of this organization. These types of proclamations only divide people rather than bring them together in mutual respect and dignity. A lesson Mr. Ratzinger might learn to abide by, before his next irrelevant outburst.

5 out of 5 stars Soal searching.......2007-05-13

Has me hooked on Rolheiser's take on what truly is inside each of us; an "energy and fire" that needs to be quenched. Fr. Rolheiser offers many options on how to contain, release and express this "fire within", and at the same time knowing that it is the Spirit of God working within you. Read the book, I read it twice so far. You will be amazed at how you think after reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A book that breaks down the boundaries.......2007-04-05

For those who have often shook their heads in dismay at the constant schitzophrenic warmongering between secular ideals and Christian beliefs, this book is a breath of fresh spiritual air. It is written in a straightforward comprehensive language and yet does not attempt to dismantle the basic tenets of Christian belief. Those who want a deeper understanding of the essential ideas which religion couches in antiquated and dogmatic terms will find in this book a blessing. Rolheiser, like any good writer, puts into simple and precise terms the anxiety and anguish that those who stand in the razor thin neutral zone between the religious and secular worlds feel. He is also refreshingly non-judgemental, reflexive and intelligent in his approach. This book is a wonder.

5 out of 5 stars Christian spirituality.......2007-03-25

Rolheiser writes with incredible clarity about a topic which can be confusing and difficult to understand. I would recommend this book highly to any individual struggling to understand either Christian spirituality or the demands of living a Christian life. Outstanding!!!

5 out of 5 stars Are You on a Course for Life-Giving or Destructive Spirituality?.......2007-02-11

"Everyone has to have a spirituality - either a life-giving one or a destructive one."

So begins Author Ronald Rolheiser's examination of Christian Spirituality in what has become his classic work, "The Holy Longing." Rolheiser writes with uncommon clarity in providing a foundation for Christian Spirituality and in stimulating us to rethink spirituality and our own spiritual journey. Rolheiser shows us that it is not enough to be "spiritual but not religious." The book will either be a reawakening or a disappointment to those who describe themselves this way.

Spirituality, Rolheiser points out, is about what we do with our souls and is subject of concern for all of us. "Spirituality is about being integrated or falling apart, about being within community or being lonely, about being in harmony with Mother Earth or being alienated from her. Spirituality shapes our actions, and in turn, our desire. Desire makes us act and when we act what we do will either lead to greater integration or disintegration within our personalities, minds, bodies...and to a strengthening or deterioration of our relationship to God, others, or the cosmic world."

Our age constitutes a virtual conspiracy against the interior life - narcissism, pragmatism, and unbridled restlessness. And today's secular society looks on Christian Spirituality with suspicion so in its place we now have cults of physical health, new gods (celebrities, star athletes) and new shrines (stadiums, pageants, reality TV). So, how are we to satisfy our fundamental dis-ease, that holy longing - that unquenchable fire that renders us incapable, in this life, of ever coming to full peace?

Rolheiser points the way. After defining the situation and the current struggle for our soul, Rolheiser provides an outline for a Christian Sprituality, the basis for Christian Spirituality (the Incarnation), and key spiritualities within a spirituality including ecclesiology, the Paschal Mystery, justice and peacemaking, and sexuality.

Rolheiser in "The Holy Longing" shows how true Christian Spirituality can come close to quenching the unquenchable and how spirituality is essential to having a healthy soul which holds us together and keeps us energized.

2 out of 5 stars Falling Apart.......2007-08-31

The book and Cohen's writing and pictures are classic Leonard Cohen--wry, thought-provoking and sometimes whimsical. I love that. However, the book binding fell apart the first week I had it. The pages came out in clumps from the cover, making it very difficult to read. I keep it together with a big binder clip and have to manage several clumps of pages to read it...a hassle at best. Bad construction. Amazon gave me a 50% discount, but I couldn't even find a contact person for ECCO Books to let them know about it.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-08-23

This is a very interesting book of poems. If you like Leonard Cohen, you will certainly find this collection well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Many thousand kisses deep.......2007-05-12

Transcending the sum of his arts, The Book of Longing is a miraculous surprise, commingling poems and songs, sketches and musings, the erotic and the divine in the poignant and profound way that is Cohen's saintly and sensual signature.

5 out of 5 stars Book of Longing, by Leonard Cohen.......2007-03-09

For anyone who loves Leonard Cohen's music, this book is a wonderful collection of poems, drawings, images, rants, recollections and celebrations. Some of the material is in the film called Leonard Cohen/I'm Your Man, and like the songs, the book speaks of love and loss, pain and sorrow in his inimitable, elliptical style. Fun to read and easy to pick up and put down at any point.

Welcome to the Fisherman's Rest, a little bar off the Sasoon Dock in Bombay where Mr. Subramaniam spins his tales for a select audience. This is the setting for Vikram Chandra's collection of seven short stories, Love and Longing in Bombay, and Subramaniam is Chandra's Scheherezade. In these stories, Chandra has covered the gamut of genres: there is a ghost story, a love story, a murder mystery, and a crime story, each tale joined to the others by the voice of the elusive narrator. In "Shakti," a discussion about real estate leads to the story of a soldier who must exorcise a ghostly child from his family home. In the final story, "Shanti," a young woman's despair about the state of the country becomes a springboard for a tale of love and hope.

Love and Longing in Bombay is a mesmerizing collection, filled with fully rounded characters and stories that resonate long after the book is back on the shelf. Chandra's prose is luminous, his tales satisfying. Scheherezade would be impressed.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of, and on, storytelling.......2007-06-06

I came to this book by way of its beautiful first story, 'Dharma', which I encountered in an amazing collection entitled "The Art of Fiction". I was keen to follow up on this story's companion pieces and I wasn't disappointed. This is a tremendously accomplished work. Five luxuriously paced stories are linked by a clever framing device involving the first-person narrator, Ranjit, and his story-telling acquaintance, Subramaniam. Importantly, Chandra's literary device never distances his characters or undermines the believability of his stories. His people and plots are fully developed and could easily stand alone. Yet together they add up to something more. First and foremost they add up to Bombay: a compelling and intriguing place, it emerges vibrantly as a city shot through with violence, riven with distinctions of religion, ethnicity and class, and haunted by love and desire. In its teeming history, secrecy, abundance and menace, the city becomes an image of the endlessly astonishing possibilities of human encounter. It's a virtuoso performance, in which Chandra shows himself to be both a master storyteller and a master stylist. In addition to a vast imagination and strong lyric gifts, he has the discipline necessary to bring his stories to stark fruition. What we find at the end is beauty and compassion. For despite an undertow of loneliness and mortality, human moments of epiphany make these stories journeys towards freedom and peace. The telling and hearing of tales, Chandra insists, can heal and exorcize. It's worth noting that the titles - Dharma, Shakti, Kama, Artha, Shanti - remain untranslated. As one critic observed, Chandra belongs to a confident generation of Indian writers in English who feel little compulsion to gloss. On the evidence of these absorbing stories, that confidence seems more than justified. Readers entranced by the noirish third story, Kama, will be pleased to know that Inspector Sartaj Singh reappears in Chandra's newly released novel, "Sacred Games".

5 out of 5 stars Impressionism in prose.......2007-05-30

The eerieness and macabre of Dharma and Shanti (first and last stories in the book) are reminiscent of Saki, the great Hector Hugh Munro. The personality of the protagonist & narrator and how it reveals itself in the end are reminiscent of Yann Martel's classic Life of Pi. The subtle connection between all short stories and yet their aloofness from the theme are reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe. However, well before this review sounds like a ploy to put Vikram Chandra amongst the greats and this work amongst classics, I must resign that his casual and careless writing style sets it apart from any other. Who says you have to be out of the box to think out of the box. For someone who has formal training in creative writing and teaches it as a professor, Vikram Chandra's style is surprisingly original and open-ended.

I did not have any prior expectation from the book and my initial reaction to the book was indifferent-to-negative. The grammar seems to be filled with convolution and localized incorrectness. The selective filtering of important detail is frustrating when it misleads you far beyond any point of easy return. However, the writing style turns out to be quite clever when you start paying close attention and that can be hard when you are reading page after page of prose.

The book never obviates this thesis, but Vikram Chandra breaks out the social life of the city into five characteristic components: Dharma (religion), Shakti (power), Kama (sex), Artha (money), Shanti (peace). The stories do not seem to have any direct connection with Bombay, yet they reveal the essence of life in Bombay. It is neither Chandra's methodical construction of dots that connect to give a bigger picture, nor a work of genius broken into jigsaw pieces that all fit together in one coherent truth. Instead the artistry of this book is in its impressionism. The reason why the whole adds up to be more than the sum of its parts is that the parts are beautifully suspended in Bombay's society, painted with the views of a keen observer. It is yours to love, or not.

3 out of 5 stars Fancy Frosting, Not Much Cake.......2007-04-27

The language is flashy and original, but the old-fashioned skills are lacking: the author does not create fully engaging characters, and the plots are weak. Nor, oddly, does he convey the feeling and atmosphere of Bombay. The female characters, especially, are cardboard cutouts -- the lady in the long sex scene is almost a soft-core parody.

4 out of 5 stars interesting charachters.......2007-03-15

When i was reading this book, I was thinkng about "our town", where the narrator gives us a glimpse into several interesting lives. i have never lived or spent much time in bombay. that being said, i am not quite sure that bombay deserve star billing in the title or connectiveness to these stories. each story (except the first) has compelling charachters that you feel interested in and want to know more about. by the way, in the last story is subramaniam shiv?

5 out of 5 stars Deserving of the acclaim, maybe more?.......2006-01-03

Many of the other reviews seem to concentrate on the fact that these stories take place in Bombay...and now that I think about it, I see why...

However while reading Love and Longing in Bombay, the city itself didn't strike as particularly important...as one reviewer notes, this could've been any city in the world.

What I liked best about the title were the characters themselves, stunningly unique...you'd be hard pressed to assign them any sort of archetype.

Also, Chandra's writing makes this book worth reading, verbose but it all seems so necessary in context...I love this stuff. Can't wait for his next piece.

Book Description

This powerful book shows how many Christians, including pastors, parents and leaders, have unwittingly absorbed many cultural ideas about sexuality that are not supported by the Bible. As people created by God for relationship, our sexuality guarantees that we will long for and be drawn toward others, McMinn provides a blueprint for understanding sexuality--and our longing to be loved-- at all stages of life (childhood, teen years, early adulthood, midlife, and old age), and addresses tough topics including sexuality for those who are single (divorced, widowed, or never married). She also details practical solutions for ways that parents, educators, and churches can nurture others and ourselves in the quest to understand sexuality as a longing that draws us toward God and others, and to embrace it as a God-given gift. Thought provoking study questions at the end of each chapter inspire us to action in reclaiming our sexuality through grace.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book, important topic.......2004-05-28

It's my opinion that the Christian church has done a poor job of addressing sexuality. Lisa McMinn's book is a wonderful exception to that generality. She balances candor and compassion; is didactic but not judgmental. Her presentation is a good antidote for unhealthy views of sexuality that exist both inside and outside the Christian community.

5 out of 5 stars Like trying to condense the ocean into a review form.............2007-07-16

How can I put into words the absolute wordless dimension this collection of poems creates within me?

The commentaries and introduction sections by Coleman Barks are valuable as well beyond words.

The reader would gain insights simply by picking it up and thumbing to any page and just read, read! My daughter and I tried this, we would bring up topics and then say "And what does Rumi say?" and I would read whatever the first words were that I saw in front of me.

They were always universally fitting.

I loved it, just like I love this book.

Wordless, speechless, love-filled - inspired.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-10-14

Rumi needs no praise from me and Barks' translation is beautiful, mysterious, and urgent. I find his introductions to the many sections especially moving. My only problem is that I ordered the book after I bought Barks' "The Essential Rumi," which changed me. This book has many overlaps. I'd have preferred to see more original translations, but as a first introduction, you can do no better.

5 out of 5 stars There Is Some Kiss We Want.......2005-04-22

Coleman Barks once again translates the words of Rumi with respect, good nature, a bit of humor, and a deep understanding of this 13th century mystic and poet. A renowned poet and something of a mystic himself, Coleman Barks leads us through his book as a constant and caring companion. He begins each chapter with his own touching stories, guidance, and expert explanations for the material he lays out. One simply cannot come away from this book without having some sincere appreciation for the devotion and dedication Coleman Barks has for another poet's words.

In "Rumi: The Book Of Love: poems of ecstasy and longing", we are led deep into the regions of the soul, where love is both Universal and Divine. It is a love that beckons us to shed our own image and concepts of ourselves, in exchange for a love that is so vast and joyful, its eloquence can only be experienced rather than explained.

How can we know the divine qualities from within? If we only know through metaphors, It's like when children ask what sex feels like and you answer, "Like candy, so sweet." (88)

Rumi seems to realize mankind is comprised of many faiths, and he mentions many of them with dignity and respect. Yet Rumi's own experience takes him beyond religion, even his own. He often exchanges the word "God" with "Friend", and refers to himself and others who have achieved his enlightened state as "Lovers".

Rumi's words and sublime wisdom ring true for us, as he shares his knowledge of the God-Friend in a both Universal and personal message. We are extremely fortunate to have the poetry of this selfless and compassionate mystic reach us through the fragile, and often forgetful, span of time. Because through Rumi's poetry, we seem to hear our own soul's call and longing to gently open like a beautiful and fragrant flower, and laugh with a tender and colorful sweetness.

There is some kiss we want with our whole lives,
the touch of spirit on the body (33)

~Brian Douthit
author of "Perfectly Said: when words become art"

5 out of 5 stars A Very Illuminating, Stunning Look at Human Life & Beyond.......2003-04-16

I fell in love with this author and his writings after reading this beautiful, simple-hearted though philosophically-deep book. The passages that he quotes and the thoughts that he stirs are nothing shy of amazing! My spirit felt refreshed and challenged upon finishing the book. What a wonderful encouragement this book is. Don't be fooled by the small size, it is loaded with fresh insights and tender spiritual reflections.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational and uplifting.......2002-11-16

I'm in love with this book! It's my favorite book of all time. I first laid my eyes on this book in 1980 when it was first published. It is a book on philosophy but it is written simply and flawlessly, very refreshing. This is one book that you can go back to, time and time again to reflect and be inspired. It uplifts you when you feel down and unspirited. It has been written for the lay person to understand faith, death, hope and happiness drawn from different religions and from different philosophies.

5 out of 5 stars Joyfully intense.......2000-02-25

This is a joyfully intense book, the best I've read on the subject. It does require time to read, and time to reflect, to fully understand the message. That's one reason I loved it -- it isn't trite and full of the same old stuff you've always heard about heaven.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and triumphant accolade to the power of faith........1999-11-04

Refreshing and powerful, well written, and straight to the point. One might suppose that a book on death would be a somber experience: in the end it is a joyful one. Why aren't we ever satisfied ? It is not because we are greedy, but rather because this is the way we were created. We will not be, we cannot be satisfied with anything this world can offer. Nothing will ever satisfy us short of heaven !

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Thoughtful and True........1999-10-04

This book deals with Heaven, but even more it deals with what God, our Heavenly Father, wants for us now. It is an inspiring work drawing wisdom from C.S. Lewis and Aquinas and many more of the greatest thinkers in the history of the Church. Finding its ultimate truth in Sacred Scripture, this book will deepen your faith and bring you to a deeper understanding of the life we have in Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Father Loss.......2007-01-10

I have really enjoyed this book. It is a great resource for the many people I have encountered who have issues of father loss and father abandonment. The book explains why you have such a fear of abandonment, and why you attract people who will later abandon you.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative! Great read for a chronic problem today!.......2006-06-07

I purchased this book to help me understand a family member's issues with not knowing her father. It really gave me much needed insight on how this dilema impacts children. I have several other children in my family who will benefit from the knowledge I have gained from this book as they too begin to question the issue of their father's absence from their lives. It's a big issue in our country and couples should truly realize the effects not having a father present in their lives will have on children and make sure both partners are truly commited to a child long before conception.

5 out of 5 stars empowering guide to living well in spite of father loss issues.......2006-02-25

If you're wondering why you settle for dead end relationships, alienate loved ones, or just have trouble relating in general, this book is for you. It provided me with the facts and explanations of behavior that a year of therapy had barely touched on. It also reads very well. Truly an empowering guide to living well in spite of father loss issues.

3 out of 5 stars It started out good...........2005-05-01

At first I was amazed at the accuracy to which the author's own experience mirrored mine. I had wondered for a long time about why my personal relationships were as difficult as they were. This book did explain a lot of feelings I had and things I had done. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to offer any solution.

Overall, it was helpful because it did allow me to identify exactly how these problems were affecting me and where they came from. I developed my own way of dealing with it once I realized what was wrong.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK NOW!.......2001-04-16

This book has changed my life, and I will be forever grateful. I feel like a new person. I know this may sound dramatic, and no, I don't know the author. It opened my eyes to sooooo much! Such wonderful news, that I'm NOT all that my 8 year old mind believed I was, for the last 20 years. And now I know the reasons why, and can take it as truth. This book is such a blessing. What a freedom I feel from the thinking that I wasn't good enough, or deserving of just about everything. That's gone, and I feel like I can do anything. I've given myself permission to actually like myself. I wish the same type of miracles to whomever else reads it, and of course, to my angel, the author!

Book Description

In the seven centuries since the death of Jelaluddin Rumi in 1273, the world has come to know and thrill to his sacred poetry. In concert with the tabla and sitar, his writing is part of a religious tradition that is believed to excite "spiritual heroism," embracing the holiness of love, lamentation, battle, and the longing for God. RUMI: VOICE OF LONGING collects nearly one hundred of Rumi's most memorable quatrains, presented here on two superbly remastered CD recordings for the first time ever.

Translated and performed by the Rumi scholar Coleman Barks, these works echo with a spiritual complexity that defies their outward simplicity. As Sufism acknowledges the truth of other religions, so does Rumi's poetry reflect universal themes: the search for the highest truth, the mystery of surrender, the longing to overcome ego imprisonment. RUMI: VOICE OF LONGING captures the silence, the love, and the playfulness that make each experience with this work one of sacred wonder.

With musical accompaniment by Marcus Wise on tablas and David Whetstone on sitar. Special appearance by Robert Bly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Glorious mystic poetry.......2007-07-24

Wonderful Rumi poetry as read by Coleman Barks who is my special favourite Rumi translator. Words to open the heart and make the spirit sing.

2 out of 5 stars Grating.......2007-05-26

It gets two stars for unintentional hilarity (refer to some of the more embarrasing moments in the career of one Robert Goulet). Cast somewhere between the imploring musings of Deepak Chopra and his collaborations with 'celebs' like Demi Moore professing 'transcendence, if only one would aspire', the dictor here, is infused with a monotonous Southern accent that unfortunately renders Rumi as prosaic humdrum.

2 out of 5 stars Loud.......2007-05-20

Coleman Barks is my favorite translator of Rumi but this CD is not. Maybe it will work for the seasoned Rumi lover but for a new person I found Coleman having to rush to speak over the music. I couldn't enjoy the poetry because of the drums and fast paced music. I have no relationship yet with Rumi's poetry and just could not enjoy all the distractions. If you already know the poems the loud music may suit you. I was glad when it ended which is not what I was looking for. It didn't let me pace through the poetry, the loud drums and sitar were too forceful.

4 out of 5 stars Can't read Rumi all the time.......2005-10-03

Though I agree Coleman Barks Southern accent and voice are a out of place for me when reading Rumi myself, his passion for Rumi more than makes up for it. I am in my car a lot, so this set allows me to enjoy the poetry. It's relaxing, the music is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars A spiritual but earthy sound.......2005-08-08

On this lovely recital of Jelaludin Rumi's poetry, the voice of Coleman Barks is accompanied by Marcus Wise on sitar and David Whetstone on sitar. There is a flute too, but nobody is credited. The 2-CD set contains translations of poems from the following books of translations by Barks: Birdsong, Say I Am You, One-Handed, Open Secret, We Are Three, This Longing, These Branching Moments and Delicious Laughter. The insert lists the first lines of the all the poems recited.

Disc One: 1. Birdsong brings relief 2. This is how I would die 3. Soul of the world 4. Again, the violet bows to the lily 5. Intricate sounds, not words, I catch 6. You said, "Who's at the door?" 7. The soul must suffer secrets 8. I saw grief drinking a cup of sorrow 9. In this river the soul is a waterwheel.

Disc Two: A sufi was wandering the world 2. Love comes with a knife, not some shy question 3. Someone may be clairvoyant, able to see 4. Last night my teacher told me the lesson of poverty 5. On Resurrection Day your body testifies against you 6. Someone says, sanai is dead 7. Those full of fear are not really on the way 8. We tremble, thinking we're about to dissolve 9. Before Muhammed appeared in physical form 10. I, you, he, she, we 11. There is no prison so dark and small 12. Moses heard a shepherd on the road praying.

The combination of devotional playing and the deep voice of Barks create a type of spiritual ambience that is more earthy than ethereal. I find the sound most relaxing and enjoyable, a fitting vehicle for the inspiring words of Rumi.

Total running time for Disc 1 is 70:08 and for Disc 2, 77:33.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-06-18

If I could only buy one book to help me through my struggles with infertility - it would be this book. Julia's focus is on the mental and spiritual aspects of conceiving. She offers wisdom that comes from her own experience. She is light years ahead of other fertility practioners. I used her book as a guide through my own journey with trying to conceive.
I married 2 months shy of my 40th birthday. We started trying to conceive on our honeymoon. I became pregnant 3 times. All 3 pregnancies ended in miscarriage. I found Julia's first book 'Inconceivable' after my 1st miscarriage. I eventually attended her workshop in Woodstock and purchased her 2nd book -'Fertile Female'. I loved her 1st book, but this book was like medicine for my soul. I really needed a book that dealt with the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of trying to conceive. A few months after reading her 2nd book, (and 8 months after attending her workshop) I conceived my baby. I am 37 weeks pregnant. I turned 44 in May and this will be our 1st child. Her book gave me the tools and the belief that birthing a healthy baby IS POSSIBLE. I love her work and believe that her approach to infertility issues makes so much sense.

5 out of 5 stars A must have book!.......2007-05-01

Words cannot adequately explain how I feel about Julia Indichova's latest book, the Fertile Female. It has become a permanent fixture on my nightstand. I find that it contains wonderful advice not only for those trying to conceive but for anyone who would like to birth an idea, a creation or just a better life for themselves. I became a true Julia Indichova fan after having read her first book, Inconceivable, too many times to count promptly following my "diagnosis" of premature ovarian failure. That first book gave me hope and courage to face the task I had at hand -- improving the quality of my life despite the dire predictions -- which served me immensely upon becoming pregnant a few months later. Now facing life with a toddler, I have found the Fertile Female wonderfully empowering as it contains the general message that one can improve one's life not only despite a difficulty but because of the difficulty. The Fertile Female is an amazing collection of all of Ms. Indichova's "tools" on how we can change ourselves not only by what we do physically to our bodies but also by how we think as well; in other words, the "tools" teach you how to live life in a productive and fulfulling manner. Bottom line, I cannot recommend this book enough!

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life - I'm Pregnant!!!.......2007-04-25

I can't say enough about Julia Indichova, her workshop, THIS WONDERFUL BOOK, and also her first book: Inconceivable: A Woman's Triumph over Despair and Statistics!! My husband and I tried to conceive for over 2.5 years. After 10 months of trying on our own, we met with fertility experts. After several rounds of fertility treatments (including multiple rounds of INVITRO) we were pretty much told that egg donor was our best option. We even met with an adoption counselor last week. The process took such a toll on us. We were beaten down. Then, something led me to Julia's website: FertileHeart.com There I found her first book (Inconceiveable), which led me to attend one of her workshops and ultimately to read her latest book (The Fertile Female). I am a true believer!! I attended Julia's workshop (where she reviews all of the techniques from her book) in Woodstock, NY on April 1st, 2007. I left there so uplifted and revived. My husband and really felt that we could have a biological child. I was so happy that following week, during my OVULATION, and I KNOW that it made a difference. I stand her today PREGNANT!!!! Following the workshop and reading her book, I practiced Julia's techniques on a daily basis. So did my husband. I literally got pregnant that following week!! It truly works! Julia is brilliant. She has developed an easy to follow plan that revives you and helps you in all aspects of your life. I can't say enough! I want to scream to all of the doctors who saw me as a statistic.... I AM PREGNANT!!!! YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK and follow Julia's techniques! Our dreams have come true. I will continue to use Julia's techniques throughtout my pregnancy and for the rest of my life. Stop reading all of those boring, hard-to-follow technical books and stop listening to all the gloom and doom...THIS IS A MUST READ! I purchased over 20 fertility books by so called experts that were hard to follow. This book was so enjoyable to read (Julia has an awesome sense of humor), easy to follow...and magically...it worked! It can for you too! I also recommend going to fertileheart.com and getting Julia's imagery CD and the best thing would be, after reading this book, attend her workshop! Remember, we are all amazing humans who have the power to make our dreams come true! Listen to your heart, find out what it is you want and believe it will happen. I am living proof! PS - I have purchased over 100 books from Amazon and have NEVER felt compelled to do a review before this! Best Wishes! [...]

5 out of 5 stars Unique and powerful approach to infertility, a must-read.......2007-04-19

In the midst of my own struggle with infertility, I luckily came across Julia Indichova's first book, Inconceivable. Her story of hope touched me like no other and allowed me to discover the author's support circles, workshops and website community which I have found to be an invaluable resource on this difficult journey. I highly recommend her second book, The Fertile Female to anyone, male or female, who is struggling with infertility. This book provides hands-on techniques for practicing what Julia calls her "Fertile Heart" tools. Incorporating these tools into my daily life has transformed me mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. While there are many tools regarding diet, exercise and relaxation, the most valuable and unique tools are the mind-body imagery and body talk tools. Deep within each of us who travel on this confusing, often scary journey through infertility, there exists a powerful and magnificent life force that is yearning to be heard. We can tap into this force more easily by listening to our bodies and connecting with our true self. The Fertile Heart tools exist to help us to this, and I am so grateful to have found them. Inconceivable: A Woman's Triumph over Despair and Statistics

5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2007-04-18

Reading Julia's first book INCONCEIVABLE was a breakthrough. She lives in a higher world and yet she is down to earth and accessible communicating emotions, creativity and fertility. In THE FERTILE FEMALE, she shares her wisdom about taking any challenge and difficulty that shows up in our paths as a gift brought to us to enhance our lives and make this a better world. Besides, she conceives a variety of tools that helped her, and many other women, including me, to overcome "infertility", be it physical, emotional, social or creative. One of my favorite chapters, called "The Authority Invested in You", advocates one's faith and trust in oneself by learning how to listen to your heart, to listen to yourself, instead of listening to all the external voices telling us that we are just a statistic number. Highly inspirational and practical book since it offers exercises and tools to travel with during your journey. Try it. It works.

5 out of 5 stars excellent tool.......2007-03-08

fantastic tool for discovering your heart, and discovering where/how God has been leading you all along

3 out of 5 stars Good...but.......2003-01-28

I've always thought workbooks were kinda' silly. I mean, shouldn't the book itself guide you through its content? Why do you need a second book to help you understand the first. The only guidebook I've ever found that wasn't silly was Experiencing God, but that's a different story.

This guidebook does ask some good questions and should be considered vital if anyone is leading a study of this book. It enables one to articulate their thoughts better. It is, however, mostly blank space for answers to the questions (why not just include the questions in the back of the original book...arg Capitalism!).

All in all, if you're leading a study of this book, it might be a good idea to pick this bad boy up. If not, save your cash and see if you can make it through the book without the guidebook.
