4 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2001-11-20

I really liked both of the stories in this book. I liked that MacComber developed the father/daughter relationship between Bethany and Ben as much as the romance between her and Mitch. I really got to know and like all of these characters. The only criticisms I had was that I wish that there was dialogue written for Susan and Chrissie as they did their matchmaking and between Bethany, her mother, and Peter Ross.

I enjoyed the Matt/Karen dialogue as well. You can feel both of their pain because they divorced even though they still loved each other. You root for them throughout the whole book. I especially laughed at Scott's "advice." It was great comic relief for a serious subject.

5 out of 5 stars A feel good novel.......2000-08-31

The storyline in this series of books revolves around the efforts of one family trying to inject some new life into their small community in Hardluck, Alaska. The brothers run a small airline service (mail, people, deliveries), and employ a team of pilots. The community is heavily male oriented and in an attempt to get more females into the town, they run an ad for female staff offering them each a small area of land upon completion of a year long contract. This book comprises two novels (one pilot per story).

I had not read anything from this author prior to this work, but I found these two very enjoyable. The plot was lightweight, but the characters were sweet and innocent (compared to some of the darker, tortured heroes around these days). I went to bed with a nice glow after the requisite happy ending and look forward to receiving the others in the series soon.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Two Bachelors.......2000-07-20

It wasn't a surprise that Christian was not able to function without thinking about Mariah after he stop being so stuborned. I knew all along that he would eventually admit that he was in love with Mariah. Nice to be able to dream of such romantic times and put yourself in their place for a time. Debbie Macomber's books keep you reading on and you do not want to stop reading once you start, but must, sigh!

5 out of 5 stars great wrap-up.......2000-07-05

This book was great! It wrapped up all the happenings in Hard Luck, Alaska. It also rapped up all the characters live's. This series left no loose ends. I liked this book because all the characters from the previous two books were brought back in and had a part in the story. This book showed the bond between all the people of Hard Luck. This was an easy read. You will want to keep reading to find out how everyone's stroy ends. This book continued the bond between the three brother's Christian, Swayer, and Charles. The idea of bringing women to Hard Luck worked out for all involved. This book finally finds Duke Porter, Midnight Son's best pilot falling in love. Debbie Macomber's books are always well written, if you have enjoyed any of her other books, this series is a must read. Unlike some other series, this one left no loose ends. This series was one of the best I have read. By the end of this book I wanted to live in Hard Luck and find a handsome man. While reading this book you feel like you know everyone personally. Abbie and Sawyer's son, Scott, ends the book for us all by telling how everybody's lives have settled into place. You will enjoy the great advice of this young boy as he helps, and watches the people of Hard Luck fall in love. It was a great way to end the book. This is a must read!

4 out of 5 stars A Well-Crafted Battle of the Sexes.......2004-05-21

Lady Antonia Paxton has an interesting reputation among the prominent and wealthy men of London. She is the infamous Lady Matrimonia, who champions young widows with nowhere else to turn. Antonia sponsors these ladies in her home, and when each is courted by a well-heeled bachelor, she then crashes their love nest to catch them in a compromising position, thus forcing the man to offer marriage to avoid scandal. She steadfastly believes marriage is the only way these women can be properly provided for and protected.

Remington Carr, the Earl of Landon, is known for his extremely controversial views on the subjects of marriage and womens' rights. He believes marriage should be abolished, and women should be allowed to work and independently support themselves. When a group of Antonia's disgruntled husbands gather to complain of their bachelorhood demise, they enlist the help of Remington in teaching Antonia a lesson that will end her matchmaking career.

When Antonia and Remington meet, the sparks really fly, in more ways than one. The gauntlet is tossed down and a wager is made. Remington is to report to Antonia's house for a period of two weeks, and do an average woman's work each of those days. If by the end of that time, he hasn't changed his mind concerning the nature of women's worth and work, she will then do an average man's work for a two-week period.

The wager becomes more than either bargained for. Antonia has a whole host of older widow ladies residing with her who become Remington's teachers. And the pupil has his own ideas while in close proximity to Antonia. To seduce her into his bed. But what will happen when the "dragon of decency" falls in love with the "ladies man"?

This isn't your run of the mill romance novel. This story is interesting, witty, and unique, with multi-faceted characters that capture your heart and emotions. Antonia's ladies are endearing, and an exceptional addition to the story as secondary characters. Overall, this is a well-written book, and the first for me by this author. There was one problem that prevented me from giving it five stars. This book is 519 pages long, and it took me six days to read. If I'm really engrossed in a story, it takes me an average of one to two days to finish it. While I love detailed stories where I feel like I really know the characters, this had a plodding quality to it, and I couldn't stay with it for very long at a sitting. I think it may have been better edited down to pick up the pace. Overall, it was still worth the time, and I never considered not finishing it. Ms. Krahn is obviously a gifted writer, and I will be trying out more of her work.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, witty look at Victorian gender roles and values.......2003-01-18

Yet another terrific story from Ms. Krahn. This is the fourth of her books that I've read and enjoyed and this and "The Mermaid" are my favourites so far. A Victorian battle of the sexes that leads to some very witty and sweet moments. Two lead characters that you just adore and root for eventhough they are at cross purposes - at least in the beginning!

Remington Carr, Earl of Landon is a proponent of women's rights and an opponent of marriage. He suggests that marriage should be abolished and both men and women should earn their own way. No more kept women sitting around eating bon-bons! Antonia Paxton is appalled and disgusted by these views. Being a widow, she knows first hand that marriage is the only place where a woman can feel safe, protected and provided for. She has taken several widows with no where else to go into her home and has helped marry off several more. When she and Remington meet 1. sparks fly and 2. she challenges him to a wager. He does "women's work" for two weeks and if he changes his opinion he must publicly retract his past statements; if he does not, she will then do two weeks of "men's work". Needless to say, these role reversals offer lots of very funny moments and both think they're so slick! And by the end of the wager both find themselves very far from their original positions and desperately in love!

Ms. Krahn writes some great dialog - wry and sardonic - and creates a very authentic Victorian atmosphere. Queen Victoria makes an appearance and the scurrilous Fleet Street tabloids also play a big part in the story. But the heart of the story are the roles of men and women and the value of marriage. And the stars are Remington and Antonia - with a terrific supporting cast including Antonia's "ladies" and Remington's uncle Paddington.

Read and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.......2001-10-10

When I started the book, I couldn't put it down! I have read quite a few romance books every month and this is one of the best. I loved Remington and Antonia. The "wager" was so unique through the whole story. Too many times I feel the heroine is a ninny but Ms. Krahn has a great talent for creating super characters, such as all those sweet old ladies. The very knowledgeable Cleo was precious. I can hardly wait to start "The Perfect Mistress". So many of her books are rated 5* and I agree. I definitely recommend this entertaining book. She has written so many and I am trying to find as many as I can. I check all my UBS in the area and then browse all the auction sites.

5 out of 5 stars First Class Romance.......1998-12-08

The Last Bachelor is romance for people who love the unusual. It's longer than the usual romance novel, because the author gets deep into her characters and story. And it is nerve tingling romance. I rate this right up there with Diana Gabaldon's writing - it transports you along with the characters into their world. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, warm love story ..........1998-11-18

Actually, I was NOT looking forward to reading this book. I picked it up at a used book store, an unknown (to me) author, and was sure I would be disappointed. But once I started the book, I couldn't put it down! I have read many, many romance books and very few do I end up liking both the hero and heroine through the story. Usually, while reading a romance, I end up saying "What a jerk!" for something he's done, or "She's an idiot!" for something she's done. With this book, the story is so realistic, so well written, I loved both characters from beginning to end. I snickered, I laughed out loud, I cried, and it was steamy and one of the most romantic stories I have ever read. I am looking for more books by this author in hopes that it isn't a fluke.

4 out of 5 stars Marines, gotta love 'em!.......2002-10-22

Back Cover Description: Lilah, a military wife? No Way! For years, Lilah Forrest had dodged her matchmaking colonel father's 'bachelor bullets.' But that didn't stop him from steamrolling Sergeant Kevin Rogan into playing Lilah's personal escort. She'd never marry military-not even sexy soldier Rogan. But at the drill instructor's touch, her icy emotions did a swift about-face...and the virgin found herself unable to resist his masterful seduction. Still, Lilah knew what she wanted in a man-and gruff and solitary wasn't it. So why, after just one more night of loving, did she want to give this marine his marching orders...to meet her at the altar?

Nice story, good sexual tension, and funny dialogue between Lilah and Kevin. The only quibble I had was the part where Kevin finds out she's a virgin and not really engaged. I didn't feel it was that big a deal. It wasn't on the same level as what his ex-wife lied about. This is the first book in this Marine series I've read, and I'm now looking for the others.

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally intense, very sexy read.......2001-10-24

This book is part of Ms. Child's Bachelor Battalion series with Marine heroes.

Lilah Forrest's Marine-colonel father has been tossing hand-picked officers in her path for years, hoping she'll take the bait and settle down with one of them. But Lilah has sworn she'll never marry military--she's just too unconventional to fit into such a structured lifestyle. Her objections haven't discouraged her father a bit, though, and he steamrolls Sergeant Kevin Rogan into playing Lilah's personal escort when she visits her father at the base he commands in San Diego.

When Lilah warns Kevin of her father's plans, he's appalled--divorced and wary, Kevin has no desire to test the choppy waters of romance again anytime soon. Relieved at first at Kevin's understanding, all too soon Lilah is shocked to find that the sexy drill instructor has her rethinking her decree against a military match, ready to give up her status as the Last Virgin in California in the face of his searing touch.

Kevin Rogan is an extremely yummy hero, strong but vulnerable. The sexual and emotional tension between him and the artistic, carefree heroine, Lilah, are tremendous. This book was too hot to put down--I read it in one sitting, eagerly flipping pages, late into the night.

If you like Suzanne Brockmann's SEAL stories, you'll really enjoy Ms. Child's Marine tales.

4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyably Sweet Romance.......2003-12-10

The Last Bachelor is yet another addition to the Lone Star Country Club series. It's number nine of the series and fourth from the end. If you are worried that you need to read the rest of the series to enjoy this one, don't. This book stands on its own. There may be a few odd moments where information about the other books is added. (Each book builds the story of the abandoned then kidnapped baby Lena, all cultivate in the finale Texas...Now and Forever by Merline Lovelace)

In this Story we meet Joe, all around good guy, who ends up marrying Ginger, waitress at the Lone Star Country Club, to help her stay in the country. The love story is charming, he thinks he is too old and she deserves better. She thinks she isn't worthy of him.

The book takes some twists and turns, keeping the reader guessing. Although some problems seemed to resolve themselves a little too quickly for my taste. Then again Judy Christenberry can only do so much in such a short amount of pages.

If you are a Harlequin "Blaze" reader this will be a little too tame for your tastes, but if you are looking for sweet, charming story, this is the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars typical christenberry.......2003-02-18

It was a sweet romance. If you have read Ms.Christenberry's books before, you won't be surprised.

When Rebecca Todman let herself into Eric Chambers" house to water and care for his plants, as she usually did, she didn't expect to find him dead in the bathroom, strangled with his own tie. She knew instantly he was dead as death was no stranger to her. She'd seen her abusive husband up dead up close when he'd crashed their car. Then death had been good to her, ending the horrible way he'd treated her, but this time death made her a suspect.

P.I. Robert Cole is hired by the dead man's boss at Westcott Oil to get to the bottom of the murder. However, it appears that Chambers had no enemies, so Rob goes after the only suspect he has, Rebecca. It doesn't take long before he recognizes the signs of someone who had been abused. He knows first hand, because his father had beaten and abused him cruelly when he'd been a child, right up until Rob got big enough to almost kill him with his bare hands.

He finds himself falling for Rebecca, but he's afraid that he has an inherited mean streak that will come out. She's falling for him, but she's afraid of all men. Will they eventually overcome their fears and get together? And while we wonder about that, there is a killer on the loose in this small Texas town.

Ms. Moreland filled her romance with just the right amount of tension to make sure her readers read the book in one sitting. I know, I did. It's true, we're given few clues as to who the killer is, but this is firstly a romance and the real suspense is if and when our hero and heroine will get together, and how will they overcome the obstacles, in this case their shared fears, that are conspiring against them.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Bachelor is About to Fall.......2004-04-06

Keith Owens is the last of a group of five guys in the Cattleman's club in Royal, Texas to have fallen to marriage and his four friends are joking with him about that as the book opens, because Keith has been selected as the member who picks the charity that will be benefit of a large check at the Cattleman's Club Ball and Keith has picked the New Hope Battered Women's Shelter, run by Andrea O'Rourke. Keith and Andrea were an item many years ago and the boys think Keith wants to pick up where they left off.

Joking aside, the boys begin to muse about who killed Eric Chambers (See "Her Lone Star Protector by Peggy Moreland). They believe Dorian Brady is the guilty party, but he has a solid alibi in Laura Edwards, who swears she'd been with Brady on that fateful day that Chambers was murdered.

The women at New Hope are delighted about the award from the Cattleman's Club, but Andrea has reservations. She believes Keith is setting her up. She's right. Keith relentlessly pursues her, ignoring all the attempts she makes at rebuffing him and in a moment of weakness she succumbs in his car and not to long after discovers she's going to have a baby. In another moment of weakness, Andrea tells Keith about the baby and now he doubles his efforts to win her hand.

Meanwhile, Laura comes into the shelter. She tells Laura she's afraid of Brady, that she'd lied, that Brady is actually the murderer. And now Brady is after them both.

This is an excellent addition to the Texas Cattleman's Club series of romances in the Silhouette Desire series of Harlequin books. Wow, that was a mouthful or should I say, a sentenceful, but no matter how you say it, this was a very pleasant read.

Texas Millionaire Keith Owens loved his bachelor ways- until elegant and sophisticated Andrea O'Rourke came back to town. Years ago the sparks between them had nearly seared them both- but Andrea had left, swearing to forget the power of Keith's touch.... Now she'd returned, cool, calm and collected- until she caught Keith's possessive, passionate eye once more. This time, he swore she wouldn't escape him before he had his fill- but then he would release her. Only, Keith forgot to let Andrea in on his plan...

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Read.......2002-12-14

This was a nice story about love gone wrong and righted.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-07-04

I enjoyed every book in this series, except this one. The Heroine whine to much for me about what happened in the past. She went on with her life and got married, to a man she supposedly had loved then widowed. But when she meets her child hood friend and past love. She harps on the pass. I've read just about all of Jackie Merritt's books and this was a no win situation for me. Before I was finished with book, I definitely wanted the man to move on and dump her.

4 out of 5 stars Passionate reminders of the past -- Highly recommended.......2002-06-12

Texas millionaire Keith Owens remains the last bachelor in the Texas Cattleman's Club. All five men had all been bachelors five months ago until each discovered the power of love. Keith scoffs at other's taunts that he is next, but does not deny that he has placed himself on a collision course with his old flame, Andrea O'Rourke. Eighteen years, earning millions in the computer business, and a divorce did not erased his fascination with Andrea.

Andrea feels incredible frustration that she must accept a large donation from Keith on behalf of New Hope Charity for battered women. Her carefully cultivated life, preference for quiet entertainment, and cool demeanor conceal a heart that never recovered from Keith's rejection. Eighteen years ago she expected a marriage proposal, and received a business proposal instead. Now she finds that her elegant demeanor is not enough to protect her from Keith's passion and her own desire.

Author Jackie Merritt breaks with the age convention I have come to associate with the Desire product line by giving both hero and heroine thirty-eight mature years. I find such a choice refreshing, and suspect such a choice greatly broadens the appeal to her mature audience. One's perspective of the past radically changes as do priorities as the age of forty approaches, and Merritt broaches those changes well, forcing her characters to both confront the past and reconcile it with a future neither feels certain of. They also realize that approaching forty does not give all the answers when love and desire become involved. These strong characterizations combined with an unexpected conclusion to the Texas Cattleman's Club make THE BACHELOR TAKES A WIFE come highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Confirmed Bachelor Meets His Match.......2006-03-27

This is another of the Texas Cattleman's Club series and is Jason's story. He is assigned to watch spitfire Meredith who goes full force after the Club's suspected villan. Fearing she will hurt their investigation, they try to keep her under house arrest only to find out she is not simpering miss and can't be kept down. I like Meredith because she is a real match for Jason. When the tables turn, and she is targeted for violence, Jason's Protective nature goes into overdrive. Good story.

5 out of 5 stars A Tense and Satisfying Romantic Thriller.......2004-04-22

The exclusive members of the Cattleman's Club in Royal, Texas suspect they have a rat name Dorian in their midst, one who they believe may have committed murder and framed his half brother for the crime. To complicate matters, the dirty, rotten, scoundrel, who they have let into their club, complains he is being harassed. Then the harasser, a petit bundle of femine fury, storms into the club in a very unlady like manner, full of invective.

The members persuade Jason Windover, one of their own who has not recently falling victim to marriage, to keep this meddling woman out of their affairs. They figure he is the best among them for this task, because one, he is ex-CIA and more than competent and two, he has sworn that he'll never marry. He wants nothing more than a brief fling here and there.

Then he catches beautiful Meredith Silver slashing Dorian's tires. Rather than arrest her and involve the club's business with scandal, he takes her home and finds out that she'd been harassing Dorian because he'd promised to marry her younger sister, then he broke her heart and fled town with her life's savings. This intrigues Jason even as he's intrigued with Meredith, however the killer isn't amused by their getting together and he blows up Jason's home, our hero and heroine barely escape with their lives.

Now Jason is starting to get upset, he's starting to feel very protective of Meredith as well in this romance that is a sure fire bet to keep you burning the midnight oil. Five stars from me for this one.

3 out of 5 stars O.K........2001-01-25

The story line of this book is great but there isn't enough passion between the two characters. It's hard to realize that these two are even in love. But the idea of a dance class and contest is something original I've found no where else in a romance novel. (I've probably read over 500 romance novels)Unlike some books that are just repeating plots and ideas from other novels.
