5 out of 5 stars Way to Go Sav .......2005-11-22

This book is super-great in every way. The forms are pretty darned good, but mostly, the book itself is exactly the right thickness to level up my dining room table. So when I'm not whipping out some quick construction contract form stuff, I can enjoy a meal without the table wobbling at all. The cover is colorful too- my pet ferret likes that. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for biginners.......2005-08-01

I'm new in this business and this book help me to make construction forms and contract so easy.

2 out of 5 stars NOT FOR THE HOMEOWNER.......2000-04-12

I purchased this book to help build my house. I am the general contactor for the job and I thought I would be able to find some form for the sub contractors to sign. This was not the case and it really wasn't any help to me at all. It might help someone who is starting their own business but not for someone building their own house.

2 out of 5 stars Far to simplistic an approach to contracting.......1999-02-06

Although this book is the most readily available book containing standard boiler-plate contracts, most of the forms just do not have what it takes. In today's litigious climate it is necessary to spell out every detail, possible eventuality, and its remedy in a construction contract. If that is what you are looking for then don't buy this one. These contracts are about as simplistic and remedial as something that you would come up with yourself after about thirty seconds thought, and that's it. If you want a good, thorough exhaustive contract (like I do) keep looking. Sorry Craig and Karen, but look at a real estate contract used by your local board of realtors. That is what you need to strive for in your contracts; all of the lawsuits against contractors attest to it.

        Book Description

Capital-intensive projects throughout the world -- including large-scale energy, infrastructure, toll road, solid waste, and recycling projects -- rely on project finance as the most important financing technique available. But the complexity of project finance requires that the practitioner predict and resolve a number of potential risks involving bankruptcy, currency, and political issues, among others, and often in emerging economies. Drawing on the author's 15-plus years of experience in all types of project finance, The Law and Business of International Project Finance is the first comprehensive, multi-discipline book to address these risks and their resolution and to detail each of the elements necessary for a successful project financing. Mirroring the structure of an actual project finance deal, this all-in-one handbook examines each step of the process, from the rationale for the project finance, through risk allocation and mitigation, to dispute resolution. Topics discussed include financing sources, environmental issues, bilateral and multilateral support, contract aspects and typical contract terms, project contracts as credit support, project finance loan documents, collateral documents, and permits. All participants in a project financing -- including lenders, developers, investors, host governments, governmental agencies, multilateral and bilateral agencies, off-take purchasers, input suppliers, contractors, and operators -- can turn to The Law and Business of International Project Finance as an accessible tool and a reliable research database. Its unique combination of practical features includes + a checklist of key considerations to assist the practitioner in structuring, negotiating and reviewing a project finance transaction; + a detailed glossary of project finance terms; + references to legal and business books and articles relating to project finance; and + sample project finance clauses and provisions with discussion and suggestions for implementation. These features enable practitioners and non-practitioners at all levels to understand the components and language of project finance and to recognize and avoid potential pitfalls.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-04-28

We bought a copy for our project finance/infrastructure finance dept. at our bank. It's excellent, especially the due diligence checklist

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......1998-10-20

This is the one project finance book I keep at my desk and take with me on business trips. It is invaluable. The book is filled with important information I need when working on a project finance deal (sample contract provisions; explanations of currency risks; financing sources; World Bank lending characteristics; political risk insurance; and on and on. The author manages to do the impossible--he combines legal and business aspects of project finance in an easy-to-use format, from a real life perspective. Each part of a project finance deal is addressed in separate chapters.

My only criicism is that the author uses the European-favored expansive table of contents, rather than a detailed index. Yet, the book is so well organized that the information is easy to find.

It's clearly the best legal and business book on project finance available. It gives me, as a business person, a real edge.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive.......1998-10-02

A well thought out treatise on project finance covering not just the legal issues, but also from a commercial perspective. One of the better books on the subject

            Book Description

Is civil society the big idea for the 21st century? Or will the idea of civil society - confused, conflated and co-opted by elites - prove another false horizon in the search for a better world? By illuminating the uses and abuses of different theories and traditions in clear and engaging prose, this book will help readers of all persuasions to answer this question for themselves.Drawing inspiration and examples from history and contemporary experience, Islam and Christianity, South and North, and activists and academics, this book gives voice to a rich and diverse account of civil society in its many different guises. In moving systematically through theories of associational life, the good society and the public sphere, exploring the neglected connections that exist between them, and clarifying their implications for policy and practice, Michael Edwards provides a comprehensive, accessible and often humorous overview of one of the most important debates of our times. This book will be essential reading for students of politics, public policy, development studies and international relations. It will also be read by all those interested in the role of civil society in the media, policy-making and NGO communities.

5 out of 5 stars "Readable, Challenging and Sophisticated".......2004-02-20

"This is a fine book. At once readable and sophisticated, it is a challenging interpretation of the theoretical and practical significance of civil society as a concept and as a basis for action and hope about the future. Edwards writes with verve and lucidity, and draws upon his wide knowledge to reinforce his general points with an astonishing range of specific examples. It is, in my view, the best short treatment of the subject, and bound to be widely read and discussed."

              Book Description

Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan (1833-1911) is best known for condemning racial segregation in his dissent from Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, when he declared, "Our Constitution is color-blind." But in other judicial decisions—as well as in some areas of his life—Harlan's actions directly contradicted the essence of his famous statement. Similarly, Harlan was called the people's judge for favoring income tax and antitrust laws, yet he also upheld doctrines that benefited large corporations.

Examining these and other puzzles in Harlan's judicial career, Linda Przybyszewski draws on a rich array of previously neglected sources—including the verbatim transcripts of his 1897-98 lectures on constitutional law, his wife's 1915 memoirs, and a compilation of opinions, drawn up by Harlan himself, that he wanted republished. Her thoughtful examination demonstrates how Harlan inherited the traditions of paternalism, nationalism, and religious faith; how he reshaped these traditions in light of his experiences as a lawyer, political candidate, and judge; and how he justified the vision of the law he wrote.

An innovative combination of personal and judicial biography, this book makes an insightful contribution to American constitutional and intellectual history.
