Product Description

Grow a flower garden in beautiful fabrics to grace your bed or wall. The patterns for Magic Vine originated in the 1930's in a newspaper guilt column written by Florence LaGanke Harris. As part of a series, LaGanke presented one new pattern each week. In addition to the pattern, the reader was treated to a fictitious story about a quilt group and their leader, Nancy Page. In the group, they shared stories, and decided on what colors to use for their flowers.

4 out of 5 stars The Magic Vine Quilt.......2007-08-06

The book has everything written in a way you can understand and use it. Being a beginer quilter it helps with the picture and wording to understand it.

5 out of 5 stars Burns is Best.......2007-07-16

I'm a very novice quilter and I really appreciate how easy it is to follow Eleanor Burns' directions in every one of her books. She very carefully gives step by step instructions which, if followed exactly, will assure beautiful results whether you're a super experienced quilter or an all thumbs beginner like me.

3 out of 5 stars magic vine quilting book.......2007-07-03

It's a nice book, but not up to Elenore Burns standards. I prefer
to have different projects in a book of that price.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Series.......2007-03-20

My daughter loves this series of books - the biggest problem we have is that she won't stop after one chapter. She's 5, so we do most of the reading, she'll read a paragraph or two, but we do that's it for now. It won't be long before she'll be re-reading them herself. She and her sister love playing fairies now, it's been great for her developing her imagination and her creative play has flourished lately.

We started with book 1 of the Rainbow Fairies and are now on the Weather Fairies Series. I highly recommend these books.

4 out of 5 stars My daughter and I are reading every one.......2005-12-02

These books are just right for my 6-year old girl. She loves the magic (the 2 human girls can turn into fairies and fly!), the puzzle of finding the color feathers, and also the friendship of the girls and fairies working together. I enjoy reading them too, that's important, they aren't boring to me!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect read-to-me chapter book for 5 yr old girls.......2005-09-12

Fern the Green Fairy is book #4 in a terrific read-to-me chapter book series. I think 4- to 6-year-old girls are the target audience. In the series, two girls vacationing on "Rainspell Island" discover a black pot at the end of a rainbow. Through each book, they find a "rainbow fairy" and return her to the pot. Once all 7 are found, color will return to "Fairyland." A wonderful mix of two girls' determination and imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Covers all the basics.......2007-06-08

This is a good basic primer for any beginning wiccan gardener. Fun and easy read, and good 'entrylevel' reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for any level of practioner .......2007-05-18

I found this book entertaining as well as informative. Very easy to read writing style. If you're a novice the book isn't too overwhelming. I like the size of the book, I can tote it anywhere, like the garden or the nursery.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-04-04

I'd been looking for a good refence book for my new garden that included a section on magical trees. This book fits the bill! Also full of little spells and practical ways to use your magical herbs.

5 out of 5 stars just what i was looking for!.......2007-03-06

As a solitary practicioner I was constantly looking for a spot that felt right (if you don't know what I mean, well, it'd take too long to explain) but the point is that I hadn't found it. Sadly, the last place I felt that was at my grandmother's (250miles away) and wasn't sure I could re-create that. Well, this book showed me how! I had a lot of questions answered in this book and most definetly will be getting her other books.

The book is easy to read, makes a LOT of sense and can be just the thing that us gardenless witches need to get a jump start back on track. I also highly recommend her book, Cottage Witchery - another excellent read and again, such a helpful book!

Honestly - if you have an inkling that you're magick lies in the garden or the hearth, but you've never practiced in a place like that I very much getting this book and reading through it. It can help you find the best place for you!

Book Description

Lily has a talent for making things grow. So when she finds a mysterious seed in the middle of the woods, she plants it. But the seedling that comes up is not anything Lily expected. It stinks and it oozes sap. Will Lily have to pull up her poor pesky plant?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2006-05-11

Opinion: I liked this book more than The Trouble with Tink, but not as much as I liked Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg and Vidia and the Fairy Crown though. Lily is much better than I imagined her to be and so is her story. Lily's friend Iris is funny and sensitive, making the story have a deeper meaning than just what you're expecting. This made the sory mean more to me.

Summery: Lily is on a walk, she told her "friend" Iris she was looking for possum ferns just to get away from her. Although she does see a possum fern, she also finds a strange seed. Being a garden talent fairy, Lily can't help but plant it. Since Iris dosn't have a garden, Lily decides to let Iris help her out. But, although Lily and Iris would be heart broken to uproot the plant, they might not be able to help it. Although all the garden talent fairies are trying to defend her, Queen Clarion and the other fairies want it uprooted now! But, the garden talant fairies and Tinker Bell can't outnumber the rest of the fairies, so they might lose, especially if Vidia can help it. Vidia hates this "vile" plant. But is it really what they thought it was? This will ever puzzle them by the mysterious plants likeing and life cycle.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down, and either can you!!.......2006-03-12

Reporter's Opinion: I thought that this was one of those books that you can't put down no matter what! I really couldn't put it down, so I read it all in one night! I was a really, really great book!

Summary: Lily is one of the best Garden-talent fairies in all of Pixie Hollow. When she was walking in the forest, she found a seed that she never heard of. She decided to plant it in her garden. The next day after she planted it, all of Pixie Hollow smelled bad because of it. The next day, it let off pink pollen that made everyone and everything in Pixie Hollow pink and sneeze. The fairies and sparrow men were about to cut it down, but Lily said to let it live one more day. That evening, it grew fruit. She tried it, and it was delicious. Lily told the fairies and sparrow men to try it, and they all loved it! After you pi a fruit, another one comes in it's place. Lily asked her Garden-talent fairy friend, Iris what kind of tree it was. Iris looked in her book and it was an Ever Tree. All of them were destroyed, but now they know that there is one left. Everyone comes to get fruit from it. It was a good plant after all!

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY adorable!!!.......2006-01-10

I have read The trouble with Tink, the Berry battle and I think this one is my favorite of the 3!! all are great books though.
They have really done the Fairy series right with THESE books.
I loved the magic Fairy dust created, BUT they stepped up and just made it better! The characters are people you really connect with, and fall in love with. YOu gain a better understanding of the talents. They make sense and seem to have more of a purpose. The fairy world just got brighter.
If you were not a fan of Levine's fairy dust, I do reccomend giving these books a try. It is an improvement!
The illustrations are great too! with the Help of Disney artists, the pictures are a pure delight!

5 out of 5 stars Very useful but POORLY BOUND.......2006-11-10

I find this book to be a very good "how to" reference. It's one you should read through after you've been stitching awhile too - to pick up those tidbits you're not doing in your own sewing. Unfortunately, it's bound with stitching and glue (I think) and the paper eventually gets cut through on a page that is left open. I had the book open for a few days on my cutting area - I was doing binding and there is a good explanation of ending it. The binding pages simple fell out - they were "cut". Now I will have to see if I can get the book "drilled" with 3 holes and put it into a binder. That has never happened to me before, so I can only think that the publisher choose a poor binding method.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2006-07-29

This is a must have for my quilting/sewing reference library. I am new to rotary cutting, and this book really helped.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2005-01-08

5 out of 5 stars The BEST quilting book!.......2004-04-20

I have purchased numerous quilting books and this one is the absolute BEST! If you are a new quilter, this book is for you and if you are an experienced quilter, this book is for you too! It has great instructions, wonderful pictures to show you how to sew it and 12 projects to do. The project names are "Floating Stars", "Pine Tree Delight", "Campbell House", "Monkey Wrench Times 2", "Indian Puzzle", "Ferris Wheel Flowers", "Dancing Star Table Runner", "Square within a Square Miniature", "Country Potpourri", "A Celebration of Cats", "Black Star Eruption" and "Stars at an Angle". If you can afford only a few books, buy this one. It is that good.

This is the clearest instruction book of ANY kind I have come across. You can tell the author is a real pro, because she gives excellent advice on all aspects of putting a quilt together. It is easy to read, with many quick-find tips on every page, and is loaded with very clear and useful how-to illustrations. The book inspires me to want to make beautiful quilts!

William Joyce's previous children's books, especially Dinosaur Bob and A Day With Wilbur Robinson, have delighted kid-kids and grown-up-kids alike with their strange, stylish illustrations and their slightly warped sensibility. In his latest book, The Leaf Men, things get even stranger, as the reader is plunged into the teeming mysterious world of an old woman's garden. When the old lady falls ill, and her garden falls into disorder, the mythical Leaf Men must be called upon to vanquish the evil Spider Queen and return things to order. Arachnid rights groups may quarrel with the choice of the spider as the villainess, but just about everyone else will marvel at Joyce's invention and his weird, detailed paintings.

Book Description

The brave good bugs march off to save the garden . . .

First, they must fight the evil Spider Queen . . .

Before summoning the Leaf Men to save the day . . .

But what about the mystery of the Long-Lost Toy?

Here is ancient elfin magic, epic adventure, and a bugle salute to the power of memory, loyalty and love as resounding as Robin Hood's call to his Merry Men!

5 out of 5 stars Perseverence, cooperation and compassion - wonderful!.......2007-08-30

_The Leaf Men_ tells of an elderly woman who is sick and cannot tend her garden, which is dying. In order to save the plants (and by extension, the old woman), the Brave, Good Bugs have to embark on a journey to call the Leaf Men to restore health to plants and people alike. Subtly teaching the importance of perseverence, cooperation and compassion, both the woman and her garden are saved. A wonderful story with beautifu (and subtle) artwork - look carefully, as there are "hidden" clues and secrets in Joyce's artwork. A favorite in my home. Recommended for children ages 4 - 7.

5 out of 5 stars The Leaf Men.......2007-04-24

I think this book was awesome. An old woman is sick and her garden grows horribly and so doodle bugs try to climb to the tallest branch of a tree to call the leaf men to fix the garden. A queen spider thinks that no insect can do that. During the doodle bugs` journey the queen and ants attack the doodle bugs, but the doodle bugs call the leaf men and the leaf men save the doodle bugs and the garden. Then the old woman gets better. I recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Still great 20 years later.......2006-09-19

I fondly remember this book from school years, and happily purchased another copy again this year. And at 35, I enjoyed it just as much! The story is beautifully written, and as a reader I feel privileged to share the story from Tom's point of view, and feel that I'm there in the book with Tom as I read. It's easy to visualise the story as it progresses. The characters are lively and the emotions change with the story, a great read.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book you never forget.......2006-07-06

Like all others who read the book as a child, I like them was enchanted by this beautifully written book. I read it (shool library) when I was about 11 and I have been looking for it the next forty years...
It took the Internet and Google to give me another chance at reading the story I cherished for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Never surpassed........2006-02-02

I first chanced upon this book as a seven year old. I had read many books before but this one truly opened my mind to the wondrous joy of reading.

Nearly thirty years later I have not yet found a book to surpass it. Re-reading as an adult I still see why its multi-layered, perfectly self-consistent meanings entranced me.

The apparent wish-fulfilment of the story is really only the surface. Around the dream garden and its marvels flow deeper themes: of growing apart and loss of childhood, time as an enemy, and unfathomable yearning. Which is not to say that this is an overwhelmingly sad book, though it is certainly one in which childhood wishes are portrayed as tempered for the first time. Even the sadness can be beautiful because it is part of life; and the book shows that the tyranny of time can be overcome with mind.

I here have the privilege of urging parents to allow their children to discover the joys of literature through this book. It would be delightful to know that children of today could appreciate it too.

4 out of 5 stars The thirteenth hour.......2005-08-23

Do you remember those old textbooks they used to hand out in fourth grade English class back in the 1980s? How they'd contain a section or a snippet out of some of the great works of children's fiction in the hopes of whetting our elementary appetites and interests so that we'd seek out the books on our own? No? Well, I do. I remember reading one of these textbooks one day and coming across a section in which a boy lives in a house where the clock strikes thirteen one night. Then he stumbles onto a magnificent eerie garden that only appears at this time. For years I carried the images from this single slight little passage with me, not knowing where they came from. It was only when I became a children's librarian that I decided to rediscover my mystery book. It didn't take long either. "Tom's Midnight Garden" is a true literary classic. Combining a British love of gardens with a bit of ghostly hauntings, time travel, and magical hours that don't exist in the regular world, the book has remained a classic, even if it has slipped out of the public eye a jot.

Tom and Peter are uncommonly close brothers. For them, summer is the time when they can play endless games in their backyard for hours at a time. Imagine Tom's sorrow then when Peter comes down with the measles right at the beginning of the warm months AND Tom has been quarantined to his stuffy old aunt and uncle's home. The boy is, needless to say, less than delighted with this chain of events. His relatives occupy the second floor flat in an old building that is separated into apartments. To top it all off, Tom has insomnia every night and finds himself wandering the building. One night the grandfather clock on the first floor starts chiming an unheard of thirteen chimes. Drawn by this peculiar number, Tom goes to the first floor, opens the back door, and finds himself facing a beautiful gigantic garden and woodsy area. This is especially odd when you consider that during the day this place is a paved over alleyway replete with garbage cans and a high fence. At night, however, it transforms into a magnificent wonderland for Tom and the girl he meets there, Hatty. Hatty and Tom become inseparable, in spite of their mutual confusion over what exactly is going on. Only when Tom is threatened with having to leave his aunt and uncle's (and thereby the garden) does he discover the source of the magic and the modern-day tie that pulls him there.

Comparisons of this book to "The Children of Green Knowe" make perfect sense. As I read this title, it didn't take much urging to be reminded of that other great fantasy in which a boy makes friends with otherworldly children. "The Secret Garden" also pops into the brain, due to its eerie ghostlike wailings and magnificent hidden garden. "Tom's Midnight Garden" is a little more methodical and (dare I say?) modern than these other books, though. Though Tom and Hatty don't initially question why a garden mysteriously appears in his backyard every night, eventually Tom must solve the mystery with a little detective work of his own. It's to the author's credit that by the tale's end, everything has been explained in a believable way. Some fantasy authors are far too willing to show something spectacular and then explain it away with the lame excuse of "it's magic!". Philippa Pearce is no such hack. This is a well-thought through book that justifies its fantasy and still remains fun.

I can't help but wish that reissues of "Tom's Midnight Garden" might consider giving it a bit of an updated cover. The original illustrations by Susan Einzig are inoffensive enough, but wouldn't this book benefit from lush full-page color illustrations from someone like Tasha Tudor, Tony DiTerlizzi, or (as long as I'm indulging myself in pure fantasy) Dave McKean? Slap a post-1958 cover on this puppy (possibly showing Tom getting his head stuck midway through the shed door) and you've got yourself a book that kids would be dying to get their hands on. Instead, you've a title that savvy adult, parents, librarians, and schoolteachers will have to coyly promote. Once the right kind of kid discovers it, however, you'll have a dickens of a time prying it from their hands. A fantasy that deserves more attention.

5 out of 5 stars A magical tale of friendship..................................2005-07-10

Tom's brother Peter is infectious, so Tom is sent to live with his uncle and aunt in their flat in America.Tom is very bored because of the lack of gardens and parks nearby, so he is extremely excited when the clock strikes thirteen and he finds himself in a beautiful and magical garden that he will never forget.Tom's midnight garden is for vivid readers who will understand the friendship betwwen a modern and old world.I highly reccomend it to anyone interested in reading fantasy novels that are not too long. This book will tell you the tale of a tragic garden, a family, with a strict and ill-tempered mother and the truth of true friendship.Read this book!

4 out of 5 stars An amazing fantasty/mysery set in the English countryside.......2007-10-05

This is an amazing fantasy/mystery/romance. It is about a girl who is slowly unravelling the mystery of her mother's past and her future, after they move to a beautiful and mysterious country estate in England. The story is very original and filled with symbolism.
I definitely recommend reading it. I gave it 4.5 stars, rather than 5 because I am extremely picky about what I consider a 5 star book. The only qualm I had with this book was that the romance seemed a bit shallow. It was based almost entirely on a fate they seemed unable to escape, and instantaneous sexual attraction. The sexual content is a bit mature for teens too.
Aside from that, I really liked it.

5 out of 5 stars China Garden.......2007-09-10

ISBN 0380732289 - With teens the target audience, and with teens largely able to pick their own reading material without mom and dad nosing in, let me at least note that the sex scenes aren't as bad as romance novels for the grown-up audience, but they're there.

Clare and her mother, Frances, have some trouble getting along lately, partly because of the boy Clare's been dating. Once somewhat idealistic, Clare has taken up Adrian's opinions, which tend toward the "every man for himself", greedy sort. This is a little thing compared to what's coming next - Frances has taken a job as a private nurse and tells Clare, basically, that she ought to stay behind in London. Clare, however, makes up her own mind (for once) and decides to go along to Ravensmere, where her mother will be caring for 87 year old Mr. Aylward. Slowly, long-hidden truths begin to come to light.

So many things Clare thought she knew - from where her mother was born, to her own name - turn out to be half-truths or outright lies. Frances had spent Clare's entire life protecting her from Ravensmere and the legacy that will be hers, no matter what she does. With a history that might well go back tens of thousands of years, Ravensmere and the families tied to it protect a secret so powerful that the head of the Aylward family and his bride, always a Kenward daughter, must protect it with their lives.

Really well done, with a nice build up (that others found too slow) that leaves you wondering where everything is headed. As the secrets are revealed to the reader, and to Clare, understanding begins to dawn - but the real secret is beyond your guessing. You're going to have to read it to find out!

On the negative side, there's not much. At one point Clare snaps "Cat fleas don't live on humans." at Roger Fletcher, which is just stupid, since there's no such thing as "cat fleas" and fleas DO live on humans. And I hate to say it, but the ending wasn't as well done as the rest of the book. If Clare and Mark hadn't actually SAID what it was that they were sworn to protect, I'd still have no idea. Don't let that scare you off, though, because this one is one you'll be sorry to miss out on!

5 out of 5 stars my favorite book.......2007-09-10

This is my favorite book ever. Mystery, intrigue, incredible plot and character development, romance, it's got it all! Liz Berry is a great author.

4 out of 5 stars A Mystery Woven With Skill.......2007-09-06

An intricate web of lore, romance, and mystery, this novel raises some interesting thoughts about the pressure of inheritance and the suffocating nature of responsibility. The plot is well thought out and mysterious, and as a reader you can feel yourself being slowly sucked into the story, lured by the many cryptic clues that lead up to the climax.

Ravensmere, the old country estate that is the setting of the story, is so deeply saturated with history and emotion that it is almost like a character, too alive and potent to be merely a part of the scenery. It creates a mysterious, intoxicating mood for the book simply through its presence, and provides the perfect location for a subtle mystery story.

In much the same way, Clare Meredith provides the perfect heroine for such a story. She is sharp, level-headed and sensible, believable and realistic, just like any ordinary person until she comes to Ravensmere and discovers her seer-like powers and bizarre connection to the estate and its puzzling past.

The only major flaw that I discovered upon reading the novel was that it took a while to get into. Nothing really happened within the first hundred pages to capture my interest. The plot only really starts speeding up after Clare meets Mark, and even then it could be quite slow-moving at times. Rather then hauling the reader in with explosive action or suspense, the author relies on her elaborate plot with its many mysterious references to draw your attention.

5 out of 5 stars the best.......2007-08-11

I have read this book over and over again. I may have read it for the first time at about the age of twelve, but I do feel that the book is captivating for woman of any age. It is mystical, but in a way that feels real and like I might belong, too, to an estate like Ravensmere.
I have been inexplicably drawn to this book, like Claire to Ravensmere, the garden and the biker, for ages.
On top of that I have discovered that the author is one of the nicest around!
The book is magic!

5 out of 5 stars The living Golden Dawn in Regardie's work.......2007-05-27

Dr. Israel Regardie's work reconciling psychology and ceremonial magick is invaluable to understanding the process of initiation into the Golden Dawn tradition. Regardie was one of the last living Adepts of the Order of the Golen Dawn {Stella Matutina} and published "The Golden Dawn" system of magick to ensure the teachings and psychotechnology would survive with each passing generation. He was one of the most prolific occult authors of his time and arguably the sole renewer of ceremonial magick. Taking up the motto, "Ad Majoram Adonai Gloriam," 1934, he joined Stella Matutina, the successor to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Regardie acquired the bulk of the Order's documents, renewing the work of the Golden Dawn.

Dr. Regardie states in 'A Garden of Pomegranates,' "...it is essential that the whole system should be publicly exhibited so that it may not be lost to mankind. For it is the heritage of every man and woman--their spiritual birthright." Therefore modern occult organizations claiming lineage from the original Golden Dawn and its curriculum of ceremonial magick indisputably owe their existence to Regardie's legacy.

Regardie discusses in this work Qabalistic exercises of the Golden Dawn system; the symbolism of each path on the Qabalistic Tree of Life and their pathworking correspondences with the Tarot and angelic evocation; the evolution of Adam Qadmon and the mythos of Genesis; the concept of progressive initiations in the Golden Dawn system while pathworking with Qabalistic archetypes and motifs; and much more. Regardie's exegesis of Qabalistic symbolism & archetypes in "'A Garden of Pomegranates" is indispensable to any student or Adept of the tradition. Dr. Regardie's works including "'A Garden of Pomegranates" are required reading for any student of the Western Mystery Traditions.

Chapters include:

Historical Survey {Golden Dawn magick & mysticism, Qabalah}
The Pit {Practical Qabalah, Yoga, & Magick}
The Paths {Sephirot and the Tree of Life}
Adam Qadmon {Human spiritual evolution and Qabalah}
The Literal Qabalah {Application of Qabalah in magick and initiation}
The Ladder {the "Ladder of Lights," the composition of the soul, and initiation}

Cross reference "A Garden of Pomegranates" with
Tree Of Life: An Illustrated Study in Magic, and Middle Pillar: The Balance Between Mind & Magic: formerly The Middle Pillar...a prerequisite for any serious student of the magick of the Golden Dawn.

1 out of 5 stars And I thought Freud was full of hot air........2007-05-03

Why occultists do what they do, I have no idea. This stuff boils down to Gnosticism. Philosophically, Gnosticism boils down to the elimination of the subject object relationship. The cabalistic tree of life is symbolized by the menorah. The light of the candles symbolizes the light on the tree of life when one becomes illuminated. Those who are illuminated are called "illuminati." And "Lucifer" is the god of these men because they identify the bearer of light as "light bearer." Hence, the worship of Lucifer. Ultimately, like in Genesis, they believe that the tree of life will open their eyes and they will be like gods. And so, it turns out that Genesis, not Israel Regardie, is able to shed light on this hermetic nonsense. It is unfortunate that Israel Regardie's mouth wasn't hermetically sealed since he had nothing important to say. It is also unfortunate that his ears where anxious to listen to Lucifer rather than Jesus Christ. But, such is the path of the fool.

4 out of 5 stars Very complicated read.......2005-10-21

This book is excellent on the topic of the Kaballa but it is a very complicated read if someone doesn't have a varied background in many different kinds of cultures and their different beliefs. The book will use examples and relate things to the different cultures but won't explain what it means. For example, it may say that something is related to Shiva, but won't tell what Shiva is. (Shiva is from Hinduism) So, if you don't have an understanding of HInduism, you won't know what is being talked about. Keep a dictionary by your side while reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars Level headed mysticism.......2005-04-23

In what is certainly an oxymoron for the genre, Regardie introduces the associative language of Kaballah and Tarot without manipulating the reader through false promises of enlightenment. His thumbnail character assessments of various figures in the history of occult literature are variously incisive, inspiring, and cautionary. The structure of the book easily permits the volume to double as a reference. There is no better guide for the curious.

5 out of 5 stars 'Pomegranates' is a charmer . . ........2003-12-21

( revised 5/31/'04)

--Note: the five stars is for Regardie's original content, and not necessarily for the content provided in this edition, in footnote or otherwise, by the Cicero's...--

A charming book, especially for the western magic afficianado, as Regardie was. . .

However, for the beginner, let him or her be steered DIRECTLY to Regardie's primary qabalistic masterpiece, 'The Art of True Healing,' where basic western qabalistic magic is applied to marvelous and practical effect. The Marcus Allen edition is quite suitable, and but little modifies Regardie's original text.

However, with that said . . .

Regardie gives a useful list of some qabalistic books in an essay from a now out of print title, 'Foundations of Practical Magic.' Hopefully, this volume will be soon reprinted.

It may be useful for some to note that Regardie, in later years, did not have a particularly high regard for 'Pomegranates,' at least in its earlier edition. It may be even more useful to note, that in his final years, he felt that 'The Mystical Qabalah' book by Dion Fortune, was the best basic introductory book on the subject of qabalah; especially, apparently, for those interested in pursuing the Golden Dawn material.

I rather enjoy the original printing of Llewellyn's edition of 'Pomegranates,' released in the mid-80s. It was much more portable than this edition. It including the original essay he wrote for the 70s edition/reprint. However, it is now out of print.

I'm such a fan of Regardie's however, that I will probably get this edition also. Especially since the Cicero's, like Pat Zalewski, were apparently friends of Regardie.

Now doubt Regardie's effort is more useful in any edition, than the many glitzy/flashy qabalah books that have leaked onto the market, obscuring the subject for some looking for the western magic view on the subject. That is to say, being from Regardie, 'Pomegranates' would still be useful, with or without any comments by the Cicero's.

Fan ? Yes, a truly grateful fan. I have 20-plus years experience with the Golden Dawn material, and recommend all of Regardie's writings very highly. The benefits will accrue to you, as they have for me.

Book Description

Sometimes that very thin line between illusion and reality is not as clearly defined as we would like it to be. It certainly wasn't the day that Alan Mitz stumbled into the garden of Abdul Gasazi. For in this bizarre and eerie place -- where strange topiary trees loomed -- the evil visage of Gasazi casts its shadow. And even after Alan escaped, the spell of Gasazi still seemed to penetrate into his everyday world. In this extraordinary, unusual, and unique picture book, Chris Van Allsburg explores both the real and surreal worlds with incredible deftness. In doing so, he has created exquisite and beautiful images that will continue to haunt readers long after they have left the enchanted garden of Abdul Gasazi.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Garden of Abdul Gasazi.......2006-05-18

This book was very enthralling to me. It was about a boy who has to take care of someone's evil dog. One day, they go for a walk and near a dog-forbidden magical garden. The leash breaks, and the boy must go find the dog. He goes up to the house of Abdul, and finds out that the dog has been transformed into a duck! He goes back home very worried. When the owner of the dog returns, he tells her the sad story. Then, all of a sudden, the dog appears.

5 out of 5 stars SO MUCH MORE THAN A BOOK.......2004-04-20

If there were a so-much-more-than-a-book category, this title would head the list. The Garden of Abdul Gasazi written and gloriously illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, and read by Jason Robards is a standout.

Threats are more menacing; adventures are higher when recounted in Robards' inimitable voice.

This, Van Allsburg's first book, winner of the Caldecott Award and deemed Best Illustrated Book of the Year by the New York Times, is the imaginative story of a little boy and a very mean magician.

Spectacular reading and listening!

5 out of 5 stars Another Good VanAllsburg Book.......2004-03-28

Very intriguing plot with excellent pencil drawings! A young boy is minding a dog for the day. Did a magician really turn the dog into a duck? Read this engaging book to find out. This is another fine product from VanAllsburg. Very entertaining and children love it. Don't miss another good one from Van Allsburg: The Sweetest Fig.

3 out of 5 stars the garden of abdul gasazi for ms voorhees book reports.......2003-03-17

The garden of Abdul Gasazi begins when a woman leaves her mischeivous dog in the care of a young boy, when she pays her cousin a visit. The boy is very busy trying to keep the bad dog from doing things that would enrage the owner. Later, the boy takes the dog for a walk, he comes across an unusual sign that says "NO DOGS ALLOWED, HOME OF RETIRED MAGICIAN" the boy is about to turn back when the dog breaks the leash and runs past the sign down the path and into a garden. The boy spends a very long time looking for the dog, and decides he should ask the magician if he has or knows where the dog is. The magician reveals that all dogs that wander into his garden... he turns into ducks. He gives the boy the dog, in duck form. He says the spell will revert someday, whether it be a day or a year. The boy is on his way taking the duck home, when it takes his hat and flys away. He then returns to the home where it came from, all the while trying to think of something to tell the owner, when he reaches the door to her home, he knocks and begins to tell her the whole story, when he notices the dog walk up behind her. He had been duped. He walked home laughing at himself... And the woman forgot to give him his hat back...

I really enjoyed this book, its one of the most well illustrated books by Chris Van Alsburg, but the story wasnt quite up to his usual standard, I expected it to be a little bit more ironic, but ah well. Im sure all younger readers and some just learning to read would enjoy this book very much.

5 out of 5 stars Allsburg at his BEST........2001-07-07

I have had this book for years and still enjoy readig it.I can not even edge the divinity of this magnificent work. To say the least, Gasazi is Allsburg's magnum opus. A wonderful read for all generations, especially children. I mean, the artwork is far better than regular children's litterary works. Then, a very rare story-line: A boy must venture far into the garden of a wealthy magician to retrieve his neighbor's canine. Far better than The Polar Express, in my oppinion. Now, don't get me wrong, the story-line is no Harry Potter, but still a good read.
