Book Description

The final adventure in the beloved and bestselling Margaret of Ashbury trilogy, which began with A Vision of Light and In Pursuit of the Green Lion.

Margaret of Ashbury is ready to settle down; the medieval healer is looking forward to an uneventful life in the country. And, indeed, life with her true love and a brood of rambunctious children is nearly perfect—except for her husband Gregory’s ever-meddling family. Finding himself deep in debt once again, Gregory’s father has plotted to sell Margaret’s daughter off in marriage to save his woodlands from a greedy abbot. In a panic, Margaret turns to her old friend Brother Malachi to help save her daughter by whatever means necessary. The tension within the feuding family rouses an ancient being that dwells in a spring at the center of the disputed woodland. The watery creature has its own plans, and its eye is on Margaret’s infant son.

Favorite characters return, the stakes are high, and the air is thick with intrigue and danger. Written with the historical accuracy, supernatural plot twists, and humor that Riley’s readers have grown to love, The Water Devil is a high-spirited adventure that brings Margaret’s odyssey to a satisfying conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Devils!.......2007-09-16

this is a great follow up to the second book....I almost wish it *was* the second book, which was a little patchy in places. I read "Oracle Glass" years ago, and loved it, but didn't pick up Riley's other books until recently. I loved the first book of the Margaret series, but wasn't that happy with the second one, although it was satisfying! This third one, however, is really wonderful. The characters of her husband Gilbert's family are wonderful, and her daughters are hilarious! And the drama that goes on with the in-laws manor...really fabulous. If you liked the first book and wanted the 2nd to be as good, you won't be disappointed with this third book.

We want more Margaret!

2 out of 5 stars not like the past novels.......2007-06-14

Sorry, I was absolutely bored by this book, where is the fun and adventure and the romance of the past books?! I definitley will not be putting this in my collection which I'm very upset by!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-05-17

This was very good, but just not as good as the first two. I missed Magaret's conversations with God.

4 out of 5 stars Nice ...Good but not Great.......2007-05-12

Interesting read. Not quite as engrossing as earlier titles in the series. Some threads left hanging such as the fate of the two daughters, some new characters not as skillfully drawn or engaging as earlier ones. Worth buying, but probably not a title you'll want to read over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Book.......2007-04-01

The Water Devil is another one of Judith Merkle Riley's wonderful medieval novels about Margaret of Ashbury. It is truly a gem of a book, colorful, descriptive, humorous, and completely fascinating. Margaret is such a wonderful character, feisty and intelligent and totally fearless. She has unusual healing powers (first revealed in A Vision of Light)and a fey quality that blurs the world of spirits and demons and ghosts with her normal surroundings. The wily Brother Malachi and his ally Sister Hilde return to help Margaret once again fight the forces of evil and save her family. Margaret's husband, Sir Gilbert, is gallant but rather clueless. Her father-in-law is my favorite comic relief character. In this book he finally meets his match and the ending is truly delightfully humorous. Once again, the world of the Middle Ages, of Edward III, the Black Prince, the Duke of Lancaster and the wars with France come vividly alive as a backdrop for Margaret's story. A must for lovers of historical fiction!

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-06-06

Very good book, many of the reviewers have already stated what I would say as well. One thing I would like to mention, is this book contains exercizes for developing one's psychic abilities, and although one may find them a bit out of the ordinary from what they hear today, Mr. Weed is very reputable and his words can be trusted.

5 out of 5 stars Succinct rendition of Rosicrucian principles/methods.......2007-02-04

Mr. Weed is a former Rosicrucian Grand Councilor who has written other, less pithy books as well. His "A Rosicrucian Speaks" is very different & IMHO far less valuable than this masterwork. I believe Mr. Weed was strongly criticized by AMORC for publishing this book which succinctly reveals much private information that Rosicrucian students receive over years of study & practice--it was felt that people were not ready to receive this information in such a condensed format-- p. 167: "The unknown is always discovered through the known. This is the way we learn." In accordance with Mr. Weed's several warnings, beware of delving too swiftly into these practices. As he states, p. 123: "Energy that is built up demands release, & if we do not open doors for it & guide it in the proper direction it is likely to break out in an undesirable way." Patience & a step-by-step approach is strongly recommended. Some of the teachings in this book, though based on Rosicrucian principles, are specific to Mr. Weed, but this does not detract from them as he was an accomplished Rosicrucian. Topics in the book include: harmonium, karma, reincarnation, types of energy, thought, healing, the cycles of life, prayer, telepathy, developing psychic ability, & psychic projection. I agree that many people could be successful in such practices. Whether people are ready is another story. Still, if you find this book & really practice these techniques as given, you are probably ready. I would also recommend reading the works of H. Spencer Lewis, former Imperator of AMORC, for further information, esp. on "The Cycles of Life." For more on Rosicrucian philosophy, see the works of his son, Ralph M. Lewis.

This book is written in a concise, yet easily readable style with many experiments/exercises. I notice many parallels with Tibetan Buddhism herein. For example: p. 6: "From the very beginning you must learn to be more aware, not less so" & p. 168: "Energy flows from you to whatever you direct your attention [kavvanah]. We can also turn our attention to Great Beings that do not ordinarily manifest in physical form & from them receive a corresponding return of high grade energy which will stimulate & rejuvenate us in every way, physical, mental, & spiritual." This reminds me of Kabbalistic kavvanah (intention) as well as Tibetan Buddhist guru/deity yoga. For the right student, this is a great book. Even for an accomplished Rosicrucian, it's a wonderful refresher. It is NOT a new age book, but is, rather, based on old, tested, efficacious principles.

5 out of 5 stars a book well before it's time........2006-02-27

I did not understand what I had purchased in this book. Sometimes it's hard to find a book to keep my attention when it comes to the topic of being awake. I understand what to look for on the subject, in my young 20's I woke up. For some reason I did not understand why I began to fell the way I now felt about people. My thoughts were I love all of God's children regardless because he loves them (and because I love him) but being young and with all the blessings that were comming to me my heart became greedy and harden. As I've stated not understanding why these good deeds were happening, this book tells you who what where when why and how. What is happening, why it is happening in life, how to understand and combat the situation so it ends. That is not all, it touches on some topics that one would find in a book about the craft, religion (does not go into detail) also personal development. I would say it's an energy workbook but it's sooo much more. This has truly been an hidden treasure.

It's deeply and beautifully appropriate that this book by the author of the classic cookbook Laurel's Kitchen should begin with a quote from one of our greatest writers on food, M.F.K. Fisher. "It seems to me," Fisher writes, "that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it...." So too with Carol Flinders. Her preface describes her own journey from the kitchen to this very personal series of reflections on these seven women mystics (Saint Clare of Assisi, Mechthild of Magdeburg, Julian of Norwich, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Catherine of Genoa, Saint Teresa of Avila, and Saint Therese of Lisieux), in each case giving us both an intimate and yet objective sense of the person and of her spirituality. Writing with grace, in a style that is both personal and informed (Flinders has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Berkeley), Flinders brings to this project a scholar's authority along with a very large heart. The result is a real gift: a delightful introduction to these extraordinary women. --Doug Thorpe

Book Description

Astonishingly relevant portraits of the lives of seven women mystics

Known to more than a million readers as the coauthor of the classic vegetarian cookbook Laurel's Kitchen, Carol Lee Flinders looks to the hunger of the spirit in Enduring Grace. In these striking and sustaining depictions of seven remarkable women, Flinders brings to life a chorus of wisdom from the past that speaks with remarkable relevance to our contemporary spiritual quests.

From Clare of Assisi in the Middle East to Thérèse of Lisieux in the late nineteenth century, Flinders's compelling and refreshingly informal portraits reveal a common foundation of conviction, courage, and serenity in the lives of these great European Catholic mystics. Their distinctly female voices enrich their writings on the experience of the inner world, the nourishing role of friendship and community in our lives, and on finding our true work.

At its heart, Enduring Grace is a living testament to how we can make peace with sorrow and disappointment and bring joy and transcendence into our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Women Mystics.......2006-08-19

Flinders is very articulate and captures well the lives of these women mystics. She balances their lives well with sections of and explanations of their writings. Scholarly, but easy to read, this book leaves the reader with many thoughts for reflection. It is easy to take away insights into a spirituality that can be applied in the 21st century.

3 out of 5 stars pros and possibly cons.......2006-04-16

as a quick glance at the other reviews will demonstrate, this book can elicit widely varying responses from readers. why so much disagreement among reviewers? i can't say for certain, but here's my guess.

on the plus side, this is a short and informal introduction to seven brilliant female mystics of the middle ages. there are few books that bring together the lives of such compelling and powerful women under one cover, as any one of them can--and have--form the basis for a detailed individual biography. in fact, at least one of my stars reflects the importance of and accessibility to these phenomenal mystics. it is clear that the author deeply (and rightly) respects and admires each of these magnificent women, and has done a good deal of homework in learning about their lives and times. she writes with an amiable voice and attempts to give a flavor of the process involved in historical research.

on the not-so-plus side (or is it?), the author is not a scholar of either medieval history or feminist theory, though these are the main scholarly fields from which she attempts to draw a picture of her subjects. if you enjoy a more casual approach to learning about people in history, you may group this point with the pluses. although the chapters are not overlengthy (the whole text itself is not much more than 200 pages), there is less organization and more meandering than is the norm in biography. again, this informal arrangement may be a plus for some readers, a no-no for others. although there is not a great deal of fresh insight concerning the lives of these remarkable mystics, and not a wide sampling of their writing, you do get an initial taste (this is meant to be an introduction, after all). the writing style is not the most inspired or graceful (and sometimes the author's intended use of vocabulary seems to get away from her), but some readers may prefer a more plain approach. one more significant con: there are, as another reviewer noted, plenty of generic feminist ideas sprinkled about. while an informed and involved feminist view would be fitting in this context, here there appears not to be much independent reflection behind the statements, and so they add little of import and at times feel a bit tacked on.

in a nutshell, this is a congenial, but not profound, book about truly life-altering women, which can make a big impact on those seeking concise portraits and who prefer a less formal and scholarly approach. if this is what you seek, you may feel like a well-informed and intelligent friend dropped in to chat with you about some truly great people. on the other hand, this is not the book for those who seek revelatory insights into the mystics, masterful writing, or a practical framework for bringing a mystical understanding into one's life. if this is what you seek, you may feel instead like you are reading a book report by an enthused, diligent, and well-intentioned friend. (for those who would like to incorporate selections of women mystics' writings into a spiritual practice, Mary Penrose's "Refreshing Water from Ancient Wells: The Wisdom of Women Mystics" is one good starting point).

5 out of 5 stars Never The Same Again Because Of This Masterpiece.......2006-01-14

I will admit to getting upset when any book of this caliber seems somehow to lose ground so to speak. It is one of the few books among thousands out there that has the capacity to transform your perspective of yourself and the world not to omit your faith in God. Too many books on the subject of Beloved Saints seem to only focus on their masterful greatness to which I could never relate on any level [as a woman being so terribly flawed (yet devoted to my faith of Catholicism)]. This book ever so eloquently and exquisitely reads like a dream and shows how these spectacularly popular Saints had trials and troubles aplenty within-and-without as mortals just like you and me. My favorite cameo is of one Saint who regretted that: she could not bring good will to good works....This is a stunner of a book. A classic for all time. Thank you, Carol Lee Flinders. I believe I am a-little-bit-better of a person - because of your book.

4 out of 5 stars I keep thinking about what I've read in this book.......2005-02-16

I will start by saying that, although I was raised a Christian, I am not one now. So I approached this book with some caution. However, it is well written and makes the medieval world that these women dealt with very vivid. It also makes what they did and wrote very accessible. I have found a lot to think about in this book and it made me want to learn more about some of the things discussed. That said, it is not a book to sit down and read all at one go. I read it a bit at a time, taking it on trips with me and keeping it in the kitchen between times. It was well worth the thought I had to put into the reading.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting women, Boring book........2002-07-25

Surely I'm not the only one who found this book totally [bad]. The only thing it made me wonder about is how it's possible to write such a thorougly BORING book about such fascinating women. The writing is just dull and full of the author's biases and prejudices, which just aren't nearly as interesting as the subjects themselves. It's written in that old-school feminism (negative, no fun) tone that thank God feminism has since moved beyond. My advice: find another book about women mystics not filtered through Flinder's lens.

5 out of 5 stars Christianity Corrected. .......2007-05-29

This book turned out to be better than I thought it would be. It really deserves 10 stars. With the thousands of church services I attended in my youth, I never heard anything like this. This book contains Jesus' message of non-duality. Ethan Walker looks at the New Testament thru the "eye" of eastern theology. He uses scriptures from all religions to expose the "ego" for what it is, a tyrant. He equates the ego to Satan both within your mind and on a universal scale. What truly amazed me is how close this book follows "A Course In Miracles" or ACIM. The only two things I would disagree with is the sacrifice and his statement "In order to receive God's grace, we must become warriors and take up arms on the battlefield of our own minds." While I agree that we must be responsible for our own decisions, there is an easier way. Simply abandon the ego. Don't make war with it. That is EXACTLY what the ego wants. WAR! Simply rise above the battlefield and abandon the ego. One other part of the book that really interested me is his guidance on the Greek translation of Mathew 6:22-23, "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore the eye of you single, whole the body of you shining will be."

5 out of 5 stars The Mystic Christ... Food for thought........2007-05-11

Being raise Lutheran, I have always been exposed to a structured religion. As I grew older I started to feel that there was something missing in my experience with Christ. What I found in this book were, if not answers, at least most certainly many things to ponder. I found it thought provoking and supportive of my search for knowledge. I also discovered that with an open mind there was not a single thing brought up in the subject matter that went against my belief in Jesus Christ and his purpose on earth. I found myself with a greater desire to know more. If you are searching, a stop here will be rewarding.

    5 out of 5 stars A guide to living!.......2007-01-12

This is a book that invokes joy, passion, truth and is the key to what scientists having been looking for with regard to a unified field theory. The unifying field is simply - love, which is exactly what one has when one dispenses with the ego and lives for the Self, the one, true Self. Mr. Walker joyously, eloquently and evocatively captures the spirit of Christ by showing that differences don't mean division, dogma certainly does not equate with liberation and that Love, God and Freedom are essentially the same thing. It is works and ideas like this that will save mankind from its own bloated, self serving, ego imposed imprisonment. I hope.

    5 out of 5 stars Blessed Be.......2006-11-09

The Mystic Christ is a perfect book which reveals the true nature of Jesus, and stands as a correction to the dogma strewn, and ego grand-standing scriptures of contemporary bibles. Jesus was a rebel. He rebelled against everything and anything in the old testament that deviated from Love, because God is Love. His message was simple: cultivate The Spirit of Love within You in your own unique way and share it with your neighbors, for this is truly Spiritual communion. The more varied the Spirituality, the better, for variety is the spice of life, and Spirituality is the jnfinity of life. Blessed Be to Ammachi, She is a Goddess; and Blessed Be to Ethan Walker III, and all others alike for giving Jesus back his true identity. As a Wiccan myself I will hope and pray, that eventually all faiths in LOVE will be merry, and dance together someday. BLESSED BE

5 out of 5 stars Walker reveals to us the missing message of Love.......2006-11-07

I found Mr. Walker's work a welcome validation of what I've come to know as a Gnostic Christian. That is, God is love and wisdom and that "we" are all connected to God through the spark of God that represents each and every one of us.

Walker uses key Bible passages to point out that Jesus' message of love and our oneness with God has always been part of his message and his purpose. Walker develops his points and makes his case carefully and lovingly. It's also worth adding that Mr. Walker does not confine his arguements to using Christian texts, but brings in other religious teachings to show the wonderful commonality of all faiths and to demonstrate that "All religions are paths to God".

Walker's research reveals how the knowledge of Mother God and reincarnation as once accepted concepts in early Christianity and other religions have all but been erased from Christian thinking. Again, Walker uses several theological sources to build his case.

The bottom line is if you ever felt separate from God because of current orthodox Christian church beliefs and dogma, Walker will awaken your soul and offer you an enlightening and uplifting premise...We and God are eternally connected and that you can experience and come to know that oneness and LOVE (Oh my, the Love!!) with the Divine NOW. God's love is there to surround us and embrace us, we just need to get over ourselves and open our hearts to God's limitless and unconditional Love. Awaken Children!

Bravo Mr. Walker. Your work was long overdue.

4 out of 5 stars The greatest test for The Great Republic.......2000-01-14

Writing on the U.S. Civil War must be a daunting task for any author. The vast coliseum of scholarship where so many have been and so many are yet to go leaves little scope for something different or new. Somehow, though, David Eicher's "Mystic Chords of Memory" is a refreshing photographic look at America's supreme hour.

The author has seemingly visited every battlefield, seen every monument, heard every story, read every text, letter and gravestone. From Harper's Ferry to Ford's Theatre, there are "then and now" photographs of many of the key places in that great conflict. The "now" photos from Eicher's own albums are splendid, evocative modern portraits of their black and white kin placed nearby. The photographs are matched by Eicher's simple and plain prose, brisk with quotes from the old generals, their soldiers and their families.

Eicher's book seems to share a similar ancestry to Ken Burns' masterful civil war television series. Both employ simple and elegant approaches to the task of conveying meaning to the conflict. Like Burns, Eicher doesn't waste time with interpretative Rubik's cubes. To Eicher, the Civil War is basic history - bloody, tragic, wasteful - but pure and simple history just the same. Get on with the pictures, stories and bonding with the old heroes; leave quarrel and contention to others.

Some might have feared that the world "will little note, nor long remember", yet David Eicher's study highlights the Civil War's enduring facility for bringing forth new and engaging reflections of that greatest test of The Great Republic. This is a beautiful book and a pleasure to read.

    Book Description

Is it still possible to believe in miracles in our modern world? After surviving a life-threatening bout with breast cancer, Sandy Johnson, author of the critically acclaimed The Book of Elders, undertook a personal quest to find out. She sought out the most powerful, authentic spiritual healers across the globe and allowed them access to her own body and heart, to find out who truly had the power to heal and who dealt simply in illusion. Through her own experience and countless interviews with fellow patients, the author provides a glimpse into this world. Among the astounding healers she encountered on her journey: -A 48-year-old furniture maker who can cure the flu over the phone -An En-glishman whose fingers radiate pink light during healing sessions -A Brazilian who, with no anesthesia and an unsterilized knife, has cured patients of cancer, blindness, arthritis, and brain tumors -A musician who can mend broken bones and heal spinal problems

    4 out of 5 stars A HEALING POTPOURRI.......2007-08-30

Johnson has accumulated a number of fascinating stories regarding healers whose patients are actually healed. Their modalities are pretty far out, but who is to say that God must be stereotyped? I enjoyed all of the stories and having once been a program director for a holistic health center, I can attest that there is plausibility in all of these stories. Over the years and from my experiences and research, a healer is only a conduit. The patient actually heals him/her self. It is written: "It is done unto you as you believe." If the modality of healing is accepted by the patient, then the patient is healed. If the sickness re-occurs, then doubt and fear was allowed to come in. It is not the healer who failed, it is the lack of acceptance. The traditional medical modalities are rife with physicians who tell a patient they have only so many months, years to live and this is in effect, condemning the patient to death if the patient accepts the verdict. Medical schools have no idea about true healings. Pharmaceuticals are not the answer. Bettye Johnson, award-winning author, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls.

3 out of 5 stars interesting but limited.......2007-04-19

I am glad that Sandy Johnson wrote this book. It is engaging, interesting reading. But it is a bit thin, which is frustrating. It would be a better book if she had gone into more depth about each healer. Nevertheless, I am glad she has written what she has. The more information about extraordinary people like these, the better.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational book!.......2003-09-13

This book left me with a wonderful feeling, and opened my mind to some of the real healings that are possible if we only seek them out.

5 out of 5 stars A behind the scenes look into the world of healers.......2003-07-20

I just about gulped down Sandy Johnson's latest book, "The Brasilian Healer with the Kitchen Knife". I couldn't put it down once I'd opened the covers. Clearly the author made an amazing internal and external journey in order to write the book. She gives the reader a "behind the scenes" look into the world of healing and healers. Any skeptic who reads the book may well question his/her belief system, yet the writer was even handed in covering the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Profiles of Sixteen Holistic Healers.......2003-07-12

Sandy Johnson describes her magical journey around the world to meet and be treated by a variety of holistic healers in THE BRAZILIAN HEALER WITH THE KITCHEN KNIFE. Disillusioned to discover that traditional medical doctors offered only the vaguest assurances that her breast cancer would probably not recur, Johnson felt inspired to seek out healers who consider all aspects of an individual (not just the physical) when they heal. Beginning with tips Johnson received from the Native Americans she'd interviewed for her previous book, Johnson discovered a wonderfully diverse group of healers working with shamanic soul retrieval, alchemy, intuition, yoga, Kahuna, Australian Aboriginal, chiropractic, water, musical, and psychic surgery methods.

THE BRAZILIAN HEALER WITH THE KITCHEN KNIFE is so fascinating and well-written that I found it impossible to set down, as Johnson devoted a chapter to each of sixteen gifted healers. Here are healers who can see inside peoples' physical and energy bodies with ease -- at times performing miraculous healings. Photos are shown of most of the healers, including one woman healer who comes out of her healing trances to find gold-like metal flakes on her body, an Aboriginal man who works with "love, light, crystals, and energy," and men who remove cancerous lumps and cataracts from their patients -- often with nothing more than a kitchen knife.

Johnson's open-minded skepticism is refreshing; even as she feels certain she's gone "down the rabbit hole," she retains her journalistic common sense and composure to ask these healers how they heal. The healers Sandy Johnson visited include: Sandra Ingerman, Katie Engelhart, Howard Wills, Vianna Stibal, Virginia Ellen, Milton Trager, Gary Brownlee, Auntie Margaret, Warren Barigian, Gerry Bostock, Dr. Ruth Ziemba, Peter Maxwel, Rubens Faria, and John of God.

Whether you are considering enlisting aid from a holistic healer, or are just curious to read stories that prove truth is stranger than fiction -- THE BRAZILIAN HEALER WITH THE KITCHEN KNIFE will satisfy and delight. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Ever since blasting onto the literary scene with the Shamus Award-winning A Drink Before the War, Dennis Lehane has been the golden boy of noir. His Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro novels are marvels of tight pacing, dialogue so good it gets under your skin and stays there, with dead-on portrayals of working-class Boston neighborhoods. Sure, he's the oft-proclaimed, hard-boiled heir to Hammett and Chandler, but Lehane also takes a page from the Hemingway school of hyper-intense writing. He pares away and pares away until he's left with the absolute essentials--and then those essentials just explode off the page.

In his five Kenzie-Gennaro novels, the detective duo is at the nexus of Lehane's big bang. Darkly funny and just this side of jaded, Angie and Patrick move through Dorchester's bleak streets with an assurance born of familiarity. It's impossible to imagine these streets without the pair, or to imagine the pair away from those streets. Mystic River, then, arrives as a bit of a gamble, as Lehane moves from the sharp edges of portraiture to the broader strokes of landscape. No Angie, no Patrick: this neighborhood is on its own. It's not any prettier and certainly no friendlier, and its working-class façade still barely masks the irresistible tug of violent ways, means, and ends.

Twenty-five years ago, Dave Boyle got into a car. When he came back four days later, he was different in a way that destroyed his friendship with Sean Devine and Jimmy Marcus. Now Sean's a cop, Jimmy's a store owner with a prison record and mob connections, and Dave's trying hard to keep his demons safely submerged. When Jimmy's daughter Katie is found murdered, each of the men must confront a past that none is eager to acknowledge. Lehane tugs delicately on the strands that weave this neighborhood together, testing for their strengths and weaknesses; this novel seems as much anthropological case study as thriller.

By turns violent and pensive, Mystic River is vintage Lehane. How good is it? You may go in missing Angie and Patrick, but after a few pages you won't even realize they're gone. Lehane's noir is still black magic. --Kelly Flynn

    Book Description

When they were children, Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus, and Dave Boyle were friends. But then a strange car pulled up to their street. One boy got into the car, two did not, and something terrible happened -- something that ended their friendship and changed all three boys forever.

Twenty-five years later, Sean is a homicide detective. Jimmy is an ex-con who owns a corner store. And Dave is trying to hold his marriage together and keep his demons at bay -- demons that urge him to do terrible things. When Jimmy's daughter is found murdered, Sean is assigned to the case. His investigation brings him into conflict with Jimmy, who finds his old criminal impulses tempt him to solve the crime with brutal justice. And then there is Dave, who came home the night Jimmy's daughter died covered in someone else's blood.

A tense and unnerving psychological thriller, Mystic River is also an epic novel of love and loyalty, faith and family, in which people irrevocably marked by the past find themselves on a collision course with the darkest truths of their own hidden selves.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-09-06

I read Dennis Lehane's "Shutter Island", which sucked. This, however, was a great and absorbing read. Lots of complexity and unexpected events. This is just a marvelous read and it draws you back into it. It's a book where you do not find yourself looking ahead to see what page you're on and how much farther you have to go. Recommended highly.

    5 out of 5 stars Shakespearean.......2007-07-09

As someone who spent most of his life in Boston, I naturally gravitated to Lehane's earlier private eye novels. They wonderfully capture the flavor of Dorchester and the whole Boston townie phenomenon. They are also very intelligent, with nuances and layers and themes that most private eye books never come close to. On the strength of the PI books alone, Lehane would have a distinguished place in the pantheon of American fiction writers.

But none of his private eye stories can prepare you for Mystic River. It is a shattering, intense tragedy played on an Irish Catholic Boston stage. It is haunting. It truly is Shakespearean in its scope. Mystic River is not clever entertainment. It is an astounding, original, tragic masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars In real life, your death was a mundane and forgettable event to everyone but you........2007-04-04

WOW! As a reader, and aspiring writer myself, I was thoroughly, completely impressed with this novel...! This was a good introduction to Mr. Lehane's work!

2 out of 5 stars His worst book.......2007-03-11

First time I tried this book it turned me off Lehane. Fortunately I ran across some of his other work later. I recently tried again and same reaction. Rambling, repetitive, etc. Like listening to a drunk telling a long story meandering story. Try Shutter Island or some other of his work.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book (That Slightly Cheated).......2007-02-06

Lehane's lush characterizations at first were a bit overwhelming, but they won me over completely. Damn, but Lehane can write! The story drew me in and held me until the very last page. Totally compelling, I loved the setup of three boys who go different ways in life, their lives all changed forever by a car that takes one of them away. Everything from the crazy silent calls of the cop's wife to the bad boy redeemed (mostly) by the love of his daughter moved every inch of me. Lehane crept comfortably into everyone's head, which really opened up the tale and forged a special bond between the reader and each character.

However, Lehane slightly cheated. In that process of moving from character to character, he delved slightly less directly into the head of one important character to preserve the mystery of his actions. I felt a bit manipulated by that tactic and suspected something was amiss. In a way, I wish he'd not introduced me at all to that character's mind and stayed with the POV of everyone around him. The story would not have suffered and the mystery would have been more intense.

That said, I can't wait to read his other books. He's obviously a tremendously talented writer who can build character like no other.

Traditionally pictures of saints have auras, but you don't have to be a saint to have an aura. Or read one. Rosetree explores 11 gifts you may have for aura reading. Ironically, any spiritual gift can cause problems until you learn how to handle it--e.g., emotional empaths often don't realize they take on feelings that really belong to other people. As long as you have a gift, why not make it work for you?

Empaths and others, you'll love the do-it-yourself techiques--over 100 of them--to save money, improve health, and more. No doubt this is the most practical book on aura reading ever written. And you'll find a salty sense of humor mixed in with Rosetree's tips using aura reading at the supermarket, during and after sex, for kissing babies, gardening, even a couple of lie detector tests.

This book is very interesting and helpful for the person who wants to know more about the world we belong to. I would recommend to read this book.

    5 out of 5 stars If you're an empath..........2007-05-14

I have almost a hundred books on spirituality and this one and empowered by empathy are my all time favorites... with so many books I had to ask myself why. The first reason is that the author of the book is an empath and I am an empath as well (emotional), it was with great relief that I learned this fact through the books, much more usefull (to me) than being taught how to awaken the kundalini. Furthermore many spiritual masters around the world are not empaths at all and are unable to read other peoples emotions and their real needs...
Secondly the book teaches that you can read auras in so many different ways, with the senses that you are stronger, etc... as opposed to teaching reading auras in a formatted uniform way, like for example through sight alone.
Thirdly I like the playful, funny kind of writing and speaking of the author.
    Overall mark: 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars The jury is still out..........2006-09-12

A close friend of mine had attended a live training with Rose Rosetree and talked highly of her. I then bought her book on Aura Reading and also on Empathy.

My friend tells me that Rose is much better in person than she comes across on the written page.

I tend to take books such as this with a grain of salt, while trying to keep an open mind. At this point I'm very skeptical, but I do not want to "close the book" just yet. I have read the book and reread certain sections, including the exercises.

The book has a section on identifying "your special talent" for reading auras: visual, kinetically, olfactory, "knowing," etc. By the end of the chapter I think that everyone would have identified with one of the things Rose said. This means that we ALL have a special talent. However, if we all have it, what makes it so special?

The book is about "reading" auras, not "seeing" auras. Basically, she talks about gathering information about someone or something through "subtle perceptions."

She has several exercises for developing your ability to read auras. I really want to see colors, but I don't. She relies on the ability to see colors when describing some of the uses of aura reading. At other times, she seems to put everything under the umbrella of aura reading. Want to "hear" the music on a CD before you buy it? Read the aura! Use aura reading to smell perfumes without opening the bottles. (I kid you not, this is in the book).

The preparation for some of the exercises is simplistic and the book doesn't explain how or why certain things do the things she says they will. For example, she reported that you can raise your vibrational rate, by taking three deep breaths, which she calls "High vibration breaths." I've done a lot of deep breathing and a lot of meditation, but I don't believe I've really "seen" an aura.

On the other hand, I've "seen" things and felt things. I'm not sure what these things are. I don't know if it's just me fooling myself or if this is genuinely aura reading. I've always had the ability to look at someone or a picture of someone and size them up fairly accurately (based on reports by others). This is what I mean by the jury still being out. I continue to try the exercises, because I really would like to do the things she describes.

Please note: I'm writing this from my office and don't have the book with me, so some of the terminology may be off, but the concepts are not.

The bottom line is that the book doesn't cost that much and if you are interested, buy the book and try the exercises. Maybe you'll have more luck than I did.

5 out of 5 stars Aura Reading Through All Your Senses.......2006-04-12

This book is well worth your time! If you are looking to expand and enhance your personal Divine abilities, here is the best example of guidance I've had the pleasure of reading in a while. The techniques and guidance have enhanced my own personal experience so much, I simply have this "knowing" that it will benefit other's as well. Rose Rosetree, the author, has a knack of helping one see beyond the walls of the box we tend to compartmentalize our learning. She is encouraging and knows that each of us has our own special abilities, how to indentify those abilities, and then how to enhance and use them. You may find that it "qualifies" things you have done your whole life and didn't realize till you read "Aura Reading Through All Your Senses". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Develop your Reading, Develop Spiritually.......2005-10-26

This book is one of a kind. Most book on aura reading are very limited in the way they teach to develop your abilities. This book cannot fail to help you unravel your gifts because it pinpoints your strengths. It doesn't promise instantaneous and magical aura viewing in "30 seconds!" or in "30 minutes!" Psychic reading is a skill to develop and this book helps you develop it.

One of the most interesting idea she discusses is that of synesthesia, the merging of the psychic senses (clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, etc) that happens eventually as you develop one or two of your talents. She also develops the three basic psychic senses into eleven.

The other strength of the book is that the author links psychic abilities development and spiritual development. She offers recommendations and a resource section to that end. In short, that book is completely worth it to the spiritual student, healer, psychic or else.

this book was the first of the three on the subject of healer of cyprus and his teachings that i read and i was very much impressed by it. now i am looking forward to read the first two books and if they are any thing close to this one then they must be outstanding read as well.

This is the book which I recommend for all seeker of truth.

    1 out of 5 stars Lies.......1999-07-04

This is the book where the Author lost his integrity. If you have an interest in one of the greatest healers and mystics of our time, read The Magus of Strovolos : The Extraordinary World of a Spiritual Healer, which was the first and only book approved by Daskalos ( the magus of Strovolos ). Although Daskalos didn't approve of the second book, Homage to the Sun : The Wisdom of the Magus of Strovolos...I still recommend it. Most of it is honest.

5 out of 5 stars You can see the rational in exploring the mystical.......1998-07-07

If you are a left-brained trained cynic as I am (I am an attorney by trade) a book on the non-material universe that "adds up" on the rational side is a joy and a delight. This is such a book. Markides explains things that I had not understood, and showed me possibilties I had not entertained. Additionally, because the narrator of the tales told to us is, as was Casteneda in the Don Juan books, outside the discipline he is reporting, we see though his initially skeptical eyes, and and hear thouigh his "can this be true?" ears. Thus are we led to feel secure that events have unfolded as they are reported, they can be believed, and may well be part of a new reality we can, ourselves, adopt. It gave me much to "chew on", expanded my thinking, and shines like a small jewel on my recollection. I will, indeed, read more of Markides.

    2 out of 5 stars Half Truths.......1998-07-04

The first part of this book is a good treatment of the subject mater and is an interesting read. However, in the last part of the book the author succumbs to manipulating the actual facts for selfish motives. This leaves the reader with a false impression of the truth concerning Daskalos, the teachings and the so-called Erevna.
