The 1964 Caldecott Medal Winner for the Most Distinguished Picture Book of the Year by Maurice Sendak. Brian O'Doherty of The New York Times said the Mr. Sendak's work "disguised in fantasy, springs from his earliest self, from the vagrant child that lurks in the heart of all of us."

Amazon.com

Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.

The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination.

This Sendak classic is more fun than you've ever had in a wolf suit, and it manages to reaffirm the notion that there's no place like home.

5 out of 5 stars Still As Good.......2007-09-26

I grew up just loving this book. I think it havd more influence on my imagination than any other book.

I recently had a son and purchased this book to read with him and it is just as entertaining after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Tale Is Sheer Magic!.......2007-09-19

What child hasn't dreamed of being a wild animal, untamed and free? Of having no boundaries or restrictions?

In the magical world of a young boy's imagination, a wonderland can blossom. Sent to bed without supper for misbehaving, the unrepentant and spirited Max lets his imagination soar. His bedroom transformed into an exotic wilderness, Max sets sail across a deep blue sea to where the "wild things" are. After taming all of these fearsome monsters (turns out, he's the wildest of them all), the newly crowned "king of all wild things" leads them on quite a romp....until the lonely boy decides to return to the place where he is loved.

This journey into imagination is wonderful, whimsical and extraordinary. Small wonder that "Wild Things" was named the Caldecott Medal Winner for the Most Distinguished Picture Book of the Year in 1964. Author/Illustrator Maurice Sendak has created a timeless classic - one which will always be among my personal favorites.

5 out of 5 stars FUN!.......2007-09-19

Read as a child myself, who does not have this book?? If you don't-- get one! My children love it, I love it, even my husband loves it! It's fun, fun, fun! And kids LOVE to act it out quoting verbatim after reading for the 123rd time! Must have for the family library! (hang onto it even after they've grown, let them have it to read to their kids!)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, imaginative book.......2007-09-15

This is a great children's book and is on many top lists, won numerous awards, etc. It is a wonderful, typical Sendak-style story where something scary is not so scary after all. Great for girls and boys!

4 out of 5 stars Something different.......2007-09-08

I like reading this story to my little girl. She loves the unique pictures and the story line makes her giggle. It is something different than the normal fairy tale stories, which I happen to be sick of. I think it is a fun book for both me and my little girl to read.

Book Description

Raised in the wild by intelligent, language-using wolves, in her teens Firekeeper was abducted back into the lands of men, where her upbringing as a wolf helped her survive the deadly intrigues of human beings. One of the first things she learned in Hawk Haven was that magic was a thing to be feared and despised. Long ago, all the human kingdoms were ruled by powerful sorcerers. Then a plague came and the sorcerers died. Nobody misses them. Much was lostbut still, nobody misses them. Yet as Firekeeper has travelled and grown wiser in the ways of human beings, shes learned that the true story was more complex. In coming to the country of the Liglim, she, Derian Carter, and Blind Seer discovered that magic is still working in the world, and that it isnt always the evil theyd been warned against. But it also turned out that the old plague specifically targeted magic users. And when Firekeeper and her friends learned to open the gates between worlds, the plague came back with them. Firekeeper, Blind Seer, and Derian Carter survived the plague: not unchanged, but still themselves. Now Firekeeper is determined to learn the nature of the plagueand if she can, to end it forever.

5 out of 5 stars Firekeeper Expands Horizons.......2007-09-15

Wolf's Blood (2007) is the sixth fantasy novel in the Wolf series, following Wolf Hunting. In the previous volume, Firekeeper and Blind Seer foiled a group of Nexans attempting to open a gate to escape from the island. Afterward, those from the New World called a general meeting of the Nexans to decide their next move, giving them the choice of cooperation or exile. Meddler asked for a favor from Firekeeper, taking a kiss to allow him to manifest on Nexus.

In this novel, five months later, the conquerors of Nexus are stymied due to the dangers of querinalo -- the Fire Plague -- to any newcomers with magical abilities. Having no way of identifying those with magic, reinforcements cannot be brought in from the New World. Since Blind Seer caught the illness, they are even afraid to bring in more yarimaimalom.

Meddler interrupts Firekeeper's dreams to suggest that she search for the source of the illness. The Nexans start looking through their archives, but the ruling council also sends Firekeeper to the New World to ask for assistance from the maimalodalum. The combined searches indicate that querinalo is really a curse developed by a sorcerer named Virim. Firekeeper and Blind Seer set off to find Virim or his descendents.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer travel back to the New World through a gate terminating in New Kelvin. After exiting the gate, they discover Grateful Peace and Citrine waiting for them. Explaining their presence, they arrange for periodic contacts through the gate and resume their journey.

In this story, the Old World nations discover that the Nexus gates are blocked. King Bryessidan of Mires is one of the first to be informed and he calls a meeting of interested parties to discuss the situation. Six other nations send emissaries to the meeting in the Kingdom of the Mires.

The ambassadors, emissaries and Once Dead at the meeting conclude that the government of Nexus has changed hands. They decide to force the gates and invade Nexus. King Hurwin suggests a simultaneous sea invasion of the island. Planning and plotting begin immediately.

This story brings several plot threads to resolution, but not to any final conclusion. Magic seems to be destined to play a more prominent part in the expanded culture of the Old and New Worlds. The new plot elements really deserve a sequel.

Highly recommended for Lindskold fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magical powers, realpolitik and unusual relationships.

-Arthur W. Jordin

3 out of 5 stars Far from Lindskold's best.......2007-09-03

Books 1-3 of this series I loved, books 4-6 I liked less well, with book #6 Wolf's Blood, being my least favorite. But I did finish it. In Wolf Hunting (#5) they came to the Nexus Islands. In this book they must defend the Islands from their trading partners who find the magical gates closed. Meanwhile, they have made many friends whose aid they enlist in the struggle. Also, there is much search for identity in this novel: are you who you look like, feel like, or who you love? And who does Firekeeper love? Trust is important to this novel, should she and the others trust the Meddler?. How much? But mostly, this is a dense, hard to read, ultimately, to me, unfulfilling novel.
I'd recommend Wen Spencer's Ukiah Oregon series, with somewhat similar plotlines and questions, instead...
I'd also recommend Lindskold's own Brother to Dragons, Companion to Owls, which is not at all similar.

4 out of 5 stars Still worth the read.......2007-05-22

The series is still going strong and managing to bring ever new elements into play.
Some long time characters are a bit neglected (e.g. Elise) some make a bit of a reappearance (e.g. Grateful Peace), many of the Yarimaimalom stay two dimensional while other new/newish characters take up the gap.
Firekeeper and Blind Seer further mature as does their relationship.
The Old World characters become alive only to go back to being mostly ignored toward the end. So the book could have done with a bit more cohesion between and within the characters but the plot was always interesting.

This all sounds a bit mixed but I did enjoy the read and would definitely buy the book again if I hadn't already.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, great series.......2007-05-15

According to the author this is the last book in the series. I have enjoyed all the books in this collection, some more than others. This is one of the 'more than others' books. The author has done a good job of tying up many loose ends, although I wish more time could have been spend with some of the characters, I guess there is only so much room in a book.
To really appreciate this book a reader should be familiar with the story line. I would recommend reading the earlier books in the series.
I also can't help but wonder, given the ending of the book, if the author hasn't left a bit of room for another book.

3 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-05-13

Wolf's Blood isn't really what I expected. I couldn't wait to read the others in the series; but this one seems to have gotten off track some how. I read 3 other books while reading it. Kinda a let down.

2 out of 5 stars Ick.......2007-08-20

Read J.R.R. Tolkiens The Simillarion if you want a way cooler history of the Elves & other fantasy races. This book is kinda wimpy. The editor must of had the day off because the writing goes on and on and is a rehash from previous sections of the book. The basic design/typeography/illustrations are below meager for a rich fantasy book. The illustrations are not that good. WOTC got a sweet deal by hiring cheap illustrators to push this book out the print shop.

3 out of 5 stars It works on some levels.......2007-08-08

I'm a recent Halfling convert, so I didn't like what they did to Halflings by basiclly turning them into Kender Gypsies. Whatever! What it does do is help to explain how the wild races live freely and differently than those city bound folk. Good selection of prestige classes and new feats.

5 out of 5 stars Races of the Wild: A Race Guide for Dungeons and Dragons.......2007-05-16

Great alternative class features for halflings and elves. Raptorans pretty much "pwn". You will FAIL your WILL SAVE if you try to resist this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good if your DM let you use it..........2006-12-06

I agree that this book is good for beginners and just another book for veterans, but you can find some interesting things inside that you can certanly use for your character.
Particularly a feat called Woodland Archer.

4 out of 5 stars Useful and pretty cool........2005-09-25

I've used the weapons and culture discriptions in both a game I'm DMing and a game I'm playing, though I have yet to use the new bird-race yet. The flying thing is a little complicated, and their culture makes it harder to use them accordingly as a PC. I may put them in a game some day though.

Book Description

New York Times bestselling authors Maggie Shayne and Marjorie Liu join two hot talents in an anthology of all-new sexy paranormal romance.

New York Times bestselling authors Maggie Shayne and Marjorie M. Liu, and sizzling newcomers Alyssa Day and Meljean Brook discover the wild instinct in everyone with four all-new stories of feral heat. Fans will get swept away by the passions in the unfathomable depths of Atlantis; they'll follow the shadows that stalk both the living and the undead in a world of vampires and guardian angels; they'll enter the forbidden world of the demon horde and their willing victims; and they'll be privy to the secrets of a beautiful animal-whisperer who's drawn closer to the most suspect of all male animals-man.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent anthology..........2007-07-08

Paranormal fans rejoice! Four exceptional authors have joined forces to create a fabulous anthology with WILD THING.

Maggie Shayne opens up this anthology with "Animal Magnetism". Macy McNamara is an excellent veterinarian but she has a secret: Macy can communicate with animals. Unfortunately, this talent puts her in jeopardy when Detective Jay Harris enlists her help with an injured dog who has witnessed a brutal crime.

Maggie Shayne takes readers through a gamut of emotions with "Animal Magnetism". She sharply contrasts the brutality of the rapes with the charm and unconditional love of the dogs, particularly with Cassie. The romance between Macy and Jay is extraordinarily well done and I love the witty repartee between the two of them. Maggie Shayne provides some clever but very dark and shocking twists in this phenomenal tale.

"Paradise" by Meljean Brook is yet another entry in her Guardians series. Someone is killing vampires and Guardian Selah is determined to put a stop to it. But first she must enlist the help of Lucas Marsden, leader of the vampire community in Ashland. Lucas is devastated by his guilt after one of the recent deaths. Will Selah and Lucas be able to stop the terror stalking the vampires or will Lucas' guilt overwhelm him instead?

Meljean Brook has created a fascinating world. The depth and complexity of her world building leaves me literally in awe as I want to know more. There are some continuing characters from her other Guardians' book and I think readers who have read her previous books in the series will probably appreciate the characters more as a result.

Marjorie M. Liu introduces readers to "Hunter Kiss". Maxine has a unique gift that enables her to hunt demons. She thought she knew the pattern her life would take but meeting Grant Cooperon turns her whole world upside down.

"Hunter Kiss" is the first story in a new urban fantasy series and wow, what a start! Marjorie M. Liu teases the reader with fascinating tidbits about this phenomenal new world while still providing a very satisfying short story. I love the gumption of Maxine and the entire concept behind the tattoos is perhaps one of the cleverest things I have ever read. "Hunter Kiss" is a tantalizing tale that promises readers a new series that is sure to be a hit.

Alyssa Day concludes this anthology with "Wild Hearts in Atlantis". As one of the Warriors of Poseidon, Bastien considers himself more brawn than brains so he's horrified when he is sent to be a liaison between the Atlanteans and the shape-shifters. His contact is the fiery shape-shifter Kat Fiero, a woman he hasn't been able to forget since their first encounter. Will another one of the Warriors of Poseidon lose his heart?

Alyssa Day really hits her stride in this second story in the Warriors of Poseidon series. Bastien's story incorporates all of the best elements of this complex but very intriguing world. The first book in the series, ATLANTIS RISING, set the stage for the conflicts between all of the various factions within the supernatural community and "Wild Hearts in Atlantis" directly follows up on those uneasy relationships. If you haven't read ATLANTIS RISING, be forewarned that "Wild Hearts in Atlantis" reveals much of the finale from the book. Alyssa Day has solidified me as one of her fans with this very solid sequel!

WILD THING is one of those rare anthologies in which every story provides an interesting twist to the more traditional paranormal themes. There are no dull moments in this anthology! WILD THING is definitely a must read for fans who like their stories on the dark side of paranormal. Easily recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A fun and magical easy read.......2007-09-30

Wild Magic catches your attention from the start and never lets it go. The story is full of action and adventures. This is my first Tamora Pierce book and after the first few pages I became a fan! My advice: read the Song of the Lioness series before starting with this one. If you love knights, swords, horses and magic you must read his book.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Magic.......2007-09-14

Well I have to say that this is one of the newest book series that have really caught my eye because I have to say that this is GREAT! The entire series is a very enticing read and I really didn't want to put it down. Definetly get all four and venture your way into the alanna adventures as well (I'm just getting started on them) I have to say that this is one of the best series, everything just pulls you in. I just couldn't stop reading. Literally.

3 out of 5 stars shy girls rule.......2007-08-06

I don't have much to say about this book, with is unusual for me. All I really wanted to say is that I loved the main character, Daine. It's very refreshing to see a shy girl overcome that shyness to become something great. I read this book after reading City of Bones, in which the supposedly "shy" main character never once acted shy, but Daine blushes and has to force words out and feels ashamed at angry outbursts and, for a shy girl like myself, seeing that reflected in a book character was refreshing.

I also loved Numair, although I'd love to know exactly how old he is because I understand that he and Daine get together in later books and, well. Yeah.

There wasn't much else in this book that really interested me. It kind of dragged on, even though I read it in one sitting, and I don't particularly care for books about animals, which is probably why, Daine aside, I wasn't too interested in this book. I will be reading the other three books in the series, however, since I am back on my Tamora Pierce kick.

5 out of 5 stars Tortall, here we come!.......2007-06-13

This is book one of the Immortals series. It follows the Song of Lioness series. Although you won't have to read this series first to understand, I recommend that you do.
This is the story of Daine. A young girl who is able to talk with animals. With her family gone and a town that has shunned her, she sets off on her own. She takes a job as an assistant in handling horses. On her journey and through her deeds, it is discovered that she has what they call "Wild Magic". A kind of magic that she will never have full control over. Through training and the love of animals (and the love the animals have for her) she becomes a hero. Something she never quite expected.
This is a wonderful book. The characters are carefully woven and you become attached to all of them. I enjoyed seeing characters from the previous Song of the Lioness books.

Wild Magic By: Tamora Pierce 0-679-88282-X

` Onua Chamtong meets Daine, a girl with a "knack for animals", at a fair in Cria, and hires her on for an assistant on her trip to Tortall's capital, Corus. Daine seems very open to Onua, and to Onua's friends, but does she have a secret? And is there a reason for Daine's "knack for animals"? Who is the strange badger who keeps visiting her dreams, and how does he know her? Where are all these immortal monsters coming from, and why have they been gone hundreds of years? Can this simple, Gallan, country-bred girl change the fate of Tortall, and her own life? And Daine dosen't have the Gift (human magic), but does she have magic? Daine will show them what she can really do at Pirate's Swoop! Even though this is fiction/fantasy, this book (and most of Tamora Pierce's books) take place around medevil times. Action, adventure, and some humor mixed in keeps this book interesting. Daine's whole life will change in Tortall, from bastard to mage, and all because of her strange, rare magic. This book is an excellent beginning to Tamora Pierce's Immortals series.

Book Description

In Wild Rain and the novella "The Awakening," Christine Feehan created an exotic, sensual race-the Leopard People. Fever brings the two stories together for the first time in one volume, a one-way ticket to a dizzying new world of desire.

In "The Awakening," a beautiful naturalist's dream comes true-to live among the feral jungle creatures. But an untamed, irresistible beast of another sort inspires her to explore her own wild side.

Wild Rain's Rachel Lospostros has escaped from a faceless assassin and found sanctuary thousands of miles from home, under the towering jungle canopy. In this world teeming with unusual creatures she encounters Rio, a native of the forest imbued with a fierce prowess, and possessed of secrets of his own. When Rio unleashes the secret animal instincts that course through his blood, Rachel must decide if he is something to be feared-or desired.

5 out of 5 stars The review of FEVER ........2007-10-09

FEVER IS THE TITLE GIVEN TO A BOOK WITH 2 OF CHRISTINE FEEHAN'S BEST BOOKS ABOUT THE LEOPARD PEOPLE.HOW THEY CHANGE INTO A LEOPARD FOR THE FIRST TIME AND MEET THEIR MATES AND HOW THEY PROTECT THE RAIN FORRESTS. IT IS FILLED WITH EXCITMENT AS WELL AS ROMANTIC PARTS. IT IS A VERY GOOD BOOK, WELL WORTH THE MONEY,TIME AND TROUBLE TO HAVE.

5 out of 5 stars Two Short Stories.......2007-08-14

Both of these stories are about the rainforest cats (people).

I read these way back when they came out, but failed to post a review. I was recently chastised about a review of a book that I didn't like, but mentioned I did like book #1. Folks got hung up on the fact that I never posted a review for book #1, so I dragged out my index file box that I keep on books, ranked and alphabetized and here goes. My Feehan collection. Yes, I've read them all. LOL

I enjoyed both The Awakening and Wild Rain: the two short stories in this book.

They were well written and entertaining. Typical Ms. Feehan style.

5 out of 5 stars Very sensual and adventurous!.......2007-08-11

Both of these stories really made you believe you were in the rain forest. I did enjoy "Wild Rain" a little more since it seemed to have more story to it. I do hope Christine continues this series, and soon! The love scenes were very descriptive but realistic, which is romantic.
You do end up really visualizing the scene and feeling she didn't leave anything out. I will read more of her books.

5 out of 5 stars Two wonderfully written short stories!.......2007-06-11

I enjoyed these wonderful short stories by Christine Feehan, and would have even loved if the first one "The Awakening" had been longer.

The first short story "The Awakening" was about a young woman, Maggie Odessa, who always loved wild animals, especially large cats, and could not resist the urge to visit the rain forest once she was told that she had inherited a jungle home. Once in the rain forest, she finds it alluring and irresistable. Apparently someone has lured her there because they realize that she will soon experience the "Han Vol Dan"...(and you must read to find out what that is). As Maggie unlocks the mystery of who she is and what she is fast becoming, will she fall in love with the man who already knows, loves and accepts her?

The second story "Wild Rain" is about Rachel Lospostros who is on the run from a dangerous assassin. After having several attempts made on her life, she decides to escape to a jungle hideaway where she is mauled by a leopard belonging to the very reclusive Rio Santana. Rio, an outcast amongst his people, realizes that he is drawn to Rachel and doesn't understand why. As she recovers from her injuries, and attempts to hide from her past (among them a wayward brother, Elijah, who I would love to read more about), she finds herself being drawn to Rio and his odd ways. What she doesn't realize is that she too is experiencing the "Han Vol Dan". As both women navigate there troubled pasts, they find love with men who are both captivating and adventurous.

I suggest that anyone who likes to read about romance and shape shifting read this novel. It was extremely entertaining and difficult to put down. I am now searching to see if there are any other novels by Feehan concerning these characters. I would love to find out how all of their lives progressed. And as you all know, this is the sign of a good writer, one who leaves you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Christine Feehan - no comment.......2007-05-13

the book is amazing and extremely intruiging .. but then again all of Feehans books are .. she is an amazing writer .. i cant wait for the release of her other books..f it was a dish, my mouth would be watering by now

5 out of 5 stars If you have Fever you already have this story!.......2007-08-14

This is book #2 in the rainforest (cat people) and is included in the Fever book which has The Awakening and Wild Rain (both cat people stories).

Fyi

This story was entertaining. Rachael running and escapes into the rainforest where she encounters Rio (wild cat). Rachael learns she is part of the feline breed.

Entertaining and well written. Moves right along with two likeable characters.

1 out of 5 stars Derivative Trash.......2007-02-02

This is just a horrible book. The characters are flat, the writing is unimaginative, and the subject is trite.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-06

I thought that there would be no match for "dark gold." I was completely wrong. Wild rain I think now, would have to be on my top #1 romance book followed by dark gold and conspiracy game. I love the area, the whole animal idea and the characters are exceptional! I would like for more of these to be written!

4 out of 5 stars excellent paranormal read!.......2006-06-12

I'd forgotten how good Crhristine Feehan can be at her best. This was one hot and sexy book, with lots of interesting details and secondary characters to flesh the plot out. I'd have given it 5 stars except for the leg wound thing, which went on far too long. But even given that odd little hitch, it was still a riveting story, and I really liked both the lovers - something I can't always say. Last but not least, the inside front cover pictured the sexiest man I've seen in a long time. Yum!

1 out of 5 stars The One Trick Pony Rides Again.......2006-05-04

I want to like Ms. Feehan, I really do. I loved her novellas in "After Twilight" and "Fantasy" (the story in "Fantasy" is the first setting of these leopard-man tales) but I can't.

I tried, really I've tried, to read her novels but they are all the same. Giant blocks of description that begin the novel as sensual, and end with me taking some Tylenol. The Carpathian ones are more palatable, than this one and her gaslight-the-reader style "Mind Games"

Her plots are all the same with small variations, and this one has Rachel faking her own death to escape her brother. She runs to the jungle and squats in a cabin that appears to be a tree house, yet has running water and other bizarre amenities.

Of course, it belongs too Rio, a 2 dimensional tortured-hero leopard-man with two pet leopards who attack her. They give her a deadly puncture wound on her leg and Rio breaks her wrist.

Gee, how romantic.

On the same page as Rachel is bleeding pus she is also dry-humping Rio. It's disgusting and illogical, the wounds used to delay the first sex scene. And, as a person who's had serious wounds, I can't believe anyone laid out like that would be panting for a man like that, she'd be in too much pain.

But of course she is hot to trot because she's approaching her Han Vol Dan, her first change into a leopard-woman. Rio doesn't tell her because he is an over-controlling alpha male with a perfect body and a shady past that has gotten him cast out of Leopard society.

I can't finish it, it's just so bad. But I can tell you how it will end, because all her frigging books end the same way. Rachel will panic over the change, Rio will soothe her, she will change to escape the bad guys coming for them. Rio will kill her brother and his men, and they will mate. Rachel and Rio, that is.

And because they've found true love, he'll be accepted back into leopard society. The end.

Just don't waste the money on this book. It's overdone setting on a sparse plot and the characters are just flat stereotypes.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant begining!.......2007-10-10

This is an excellent begining to my absolute favorite series in the world. When I first got this book it was because I kept seeing ads for it, so I decided to get it just to keep the ads happy. I fell in love with the book, and back then I didn't know about its sequels. A couple years later I got the next five books in the series. I read them all. Now I own every book and have read the first series 3 or 4 times, the second series twice, and I am eagerly anticipating the next books to come. For people wondering "Hmmm... Should I buy this?" GET IT! It is a wonderful series and I encourage people to buy it. I won't summarize the book because I wouldn't be able to do it any credit. Besides plenty of other people have written descriptions of it. All I can say is that this book is worth the money, and that this is a book that I will cherish forever. I love this series!

P.S. - I know it says "A kid's review". Please don't pay attention to that, I'm not some 5-year old that thinks kitties are cute. And I don't think that many "kid's review" people are, so don't shoot this review down, just because of that title. I enjoy the books for what they are, not because their names are adorable and I want to hug them all because they're fluffy wittle kittens. (I would like to hug them though, and the names ROCK! They'd bite me for it though, oh well...)

5 out of 5 stars A very Good start to a very good series.......2007-10-01

Any cat lover or animal lover should read this series! My favorite thing to do after school is to sit on my bed, my cat curled up next to me, and read a warriors book. This book is a great start, explaining everything and getting you set up for the rest of the series. I am currently reading the new prophecy book #2, Moonrise. If you are just starting the series, here's something you should know: you have to read the books in order! And DON'T read the backs or the character lists of books ahead of you! I made the mistake of looking at the character list of the new prophecy book #4 (Starlight?) when I was reading book #4 of the regular Series, Rising Storm, and saw something that you will find out in the 6th book, Darkest Hour. This is a very good start to a very good series!

4 out of 5 stars Start of a series that will last you years........2007-08-31

This book takes the view of a cat, Rusty, as he is accepted into ThunderClan, a group of warrior cats. Two villans, one on the outside, one traitor in the clan. Suspenseful, shocking, and action are all over this book. Not only does it end with Firepaw (formerly Rusty, now a warrior apprentice) becoming a full warrior, it leaves you hanging with the dangerous deputy, Tigerclaw, watching intendly on young Fireheart and the evil Brokenstar banished, but plotting. It leaves you itching for the future books, and starts a series that will make you read nonstop.

4 out of 5 stars Predictable, but Fun.......2007-08-28

If you picked up this book and read the summary and are expecting animals with magical powers, then look away. While `Warriors' are about wild cats living in clans, the names of the clans do not mean cats are water masters or wind mages. They are wild cats who live in clans, and that's about it. Nothing much special.

Rusty, a typical house pet, or `Kittypet', dreams about hunting and eating mice (a la Tag from `The Wild Road', etc), while Smudge, his cat friend, will eventually be neutered and spend his time lazing around (a common neuter myth). Rusty eventually walks into one of the Clan's Territory, Thunderclan, and runs into Graypaw. Soon enough, the two become friends and Rusty is sent to the leader of Thunderclan, Bluestar, who admits Rusty into the group due to the fact that the clan needed more warriors, and Rusty is now Firepaw. Him being at a clan with cats who despise Kittypets, Firepaw meets many challenges, especially when something sinister lurks in ambitious Tigerclaw. And the obvious-dark-clan-of-the-forest Shadowclan.

This book, while very, very predictable (no joke, a child will have this book figured out), was very interesting to read, and actually grips you to the end, even though Firepaw was a sugary sweet hero who seems to know what is going on while the others don't. Flaws, while small, affect the series as a whole. For one,

(-) Bluestar needs more warriors for her clan, yet is fine with the fact that only one cat joined her clan. Why not send scouts to recruit more Kittypets?

(-) The `Fire alone can save our clan' bit is obvious. We all know what this is referring to.

(-) The obvious characters who will nonetheless be bad (Longtail's dark pelt, Tigerclaw's dark pelt, Darkstripe's dark pelt and dark name; not to mention Shadowclan).

(-) The big one: inbreeding. If the clans were really big, that would be understandable, but these are wild cats...well, wild cats with human qualities and no, no wild cat will bunch up in a group like this, but this is a book. Even so, I notice that if you have such a little group of cats together like this, it won't be long until there would be some inbreeding going on, so isn't it kinda obvious that you need cats from different clans, and Kittypets, too, to prevent something like this happening?

These flaws aside, I'm sure `Warriors' will suit your needs, even though it's a predictable book. I liked it, nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Pick it up and you can't put it down. You will love it. By a cat freak........2007-08-23

I won't say anything about the story (there are enough reviews already) except that it's about a kittypet (house cat) named Rusty that feels attracted to the wild forest. He eventually joins ThunderClan, one of 4 Clans, and becomes the apprentice Firepaw. Each book has its own great plot, and one big mystery that continues to fold out throughout the whole series. It's full of suspense, intrigue, mystery, action, friendship, grief, happiness, death, excitement (about... um... A LOT)... and of course cats! Each new book is better than the last. I have all of them except the New Prophecy (a runner-up series) #6 Sunset and the Power of Three (3rd runner-up) The Sight. Read them all. You'll be hooked. Then, after reading Warriors and at least some of The New Prophecy get Warriors Field Guide (contains spoilers!) and when you've finished Dawn (TNP #3) read the manga (The Lost Warrior). You'll become a HUGE fan. Oh, and a warning: if you buy a set or something with the first four, DO NOT, by any circumstances, read the fourth one without having the fifth one close by (I won't say why). MAKE SURE you have it ready. Oh and yes, I feel horrible that there's only 5 stars. This one should have, like, a bazillion. BUY ALL OF THEM! Warriors 4ever!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better than the first, looking forward to the third.......2006-12-29

Canavan delivers a good middle book here. The plotlines with the Pentadrians and Elai are somewhat disappointing; the real story is what's going on with the gods and the immortals. What to the gods have against the Wilds? Where did the gods come from? What are they planning? How much of what's going on are they aware of? There's clearly a much larger story going on here than the base plot of the Circlian/Pentadrian conflict. I'm waiting anxiously for the grand design to be revealed in the third book. Hopefully she'll do a better job of wrapping it all up than Brin did with the "Startide Rising" series.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2006-10-06

This was the first book by this author that I've read. I loved it and rushed out to pickup Book 1 and preordered Book 3. Highly recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars Hydroslider.......2006-06-06

This book is amazing! Trudi Canavan has truly evolved in her writing since her "Black Magician" trilogy. It picks up just days, if barely weeks, after the first book (I took my time to read this book to keep myself in suspense ha ha), so some of the characters in the book stay, but we change focus so can we get to become familiar with newer people as well as those met briefly in the first book (such as the Elai). The book is easy to follow and so much fun to imagine yourself in! Just make sure you read the first book, "Priestess of the White" before starting on "Last of the Wilds"! I cannot wait until the third book comes out! Also recommend reading the "Black Magician" trilogy by the same author if looking for books to pass time until the third comes out!

4 out of 5 stars Much better!.......2006-06-05

After reading this book, I thought, finally! This is Trudi Canavan as I remember her from her first trilogy.

"Last of the Wilds" is a middle book, but in many ways is stronger than its predecessor, "Priestess of the White." In this book, the storylines for all the main character groups (the White, especially Auraya, the Pentadrians, the Wilds, the Elai and the Siyee) get more interesting. There is depth to each of the individual plots and the author sets up a complex and intriguing political scene for the third book.

One of Canavan's strengths is her ability to show all sides of the story, much like another favorite author of mine, Hilari Bell. By this I mean, the "bad guys" aren't necessarily bad, and the "good guys" may have questionable motives and actions too.

Whereas "Priestess" felt very linear (all Pentadrians are evil, all Circlians are good and just being vicitmized by the bad Pentadrians), "Last of the Wilds" delves deeper into the motives and thoughts behind the character groups' behavior. Both sides feel that they are "correct" and are trying to spread their influence, either through war, alliances, or whatever. I actually liked the Pentadrians in this book, because the author showed why and what they were trying to do. Meanwhile, I found myself not feeling kindly toward the Whites, because they seemed to lack compassion and fairness.

Then you've got the other major group, the Wilds, which are literally a wild card in the book. Emerahl runs off to find other people like her - with an unclear goal in mind, but it is fascinating to speculate what the author might do with this group in the third book. With their knowledge of what used to be, they might upset the balance and cause a completely different society to emerge. They already do upset the balance when Auraya discovers something shocking about one of them - forcing her to make a hard and surprising decision that makes you anxious to read the conclusion in the third book.

Overall, a MUCH BETTER book than the first one and well worth the time to read. I am definitely looking forward to the last book in the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Two good books in a row.......2006-05-09

"Last of the Wilds" is the second book of Trudi Canavan's second trilogy, the first being The Black Magician Trilogy. Although all of the living characters are still present in this book, the focus shifts from the Dreamweavers and the White to some of the other characters and characters sets. The Siyee are once again used as a culture bridge. Added to the mix are the Siyee's water bound cousin's the Elai (met briefly by Auraya in the first book). The Wilds, or unpredictable sorcerers, are of much interest. These long-lived or immortal characters (like Mirar and Emerahl), remember the history of the five Circlian Gods. Additionally, focus shifts to give the reader a better view of the foes from "Priestess of the White," the Pentadrians. We get a better look into the religion of the Pentadrians, their social structure, their mysterious five gods who rarely show themselves, and their continuing plans to spread their religion. I recommend this book. Be warned that it is Canavan's heftiest book yet, 555 pages and might not appeal to some readers because of this. I hope the conclusion of the series doesn't disapoint like the final epilogue of Black Magician.

4 out of 5 stars Followon the Wildcat and good read.......2005-10-18

Tis is the follow on the wildcat and follows Dean's attempts to put a stop to the rustleing ad to deal with her case of the hots for Jake who dumped her for a carrer as a lawman. The mistery continues in the next book. The sex is welll written and while the plot is weak its Ok and woith giving a better than average rating to the book.

5 out of 5 stars Do you love westerns?.......2004-09-29

I just love westerns and this one didn't disappoint. The love scenes were HOT, HOT, HOT!!! I loved the heroine she wasn't winey or annoying, she was very independent and self-assured. The hero was a nice alpha male and the heroine really made him work to earn her trust again. **sigh** It was a very believable relationship. I was a little surprised at the ending. I don't think I'm giving anything away, there is a cattle-rustling mystery that does not get solved and continues on into the next book. So of course I have to get the next one. I also recommend anything by Sarah McCarty too. She writes great westerns and has great alpha cowboys.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent erotic western romance ..........2004-08-21

Great characters, great love story, and fantastic alpha male. I love everything written by this author and this story was no exception. The next in the series (available as an e-book) was also wonderful. I think Ms. McCray has a way with the westerns--the characters are pleasing and the dialogue seems very genuine. GREAT HOT love scenes and and dark brooding alpha male make this story a keeper for me.

4 out of 5 stars Saddle up, partner! (Corny, I know.).......2004-07-24

This is the first Western romantica I've ever read, and Wildfire is one of the yummiest, sexiest, most erotic romances out there. The thing that I like the most is that it is set in rural Arizona with a backdrop of country life. Dean "Dee" MacLeod has had a great deal of horses and other life stock stolen from her ranch, and no one in town appears to know what's going on. But things get even more complicated in Dee's life when ex-boyfriend Jake Reynolds decides to help out with the case. He'd left her ten years ago and her heart is still broken. Her plan is to make the ultimate seduction that will show him what he's missed out on all these years, but Jake has other ideas in mind...

Cheyenne McCray's descriptions are insatiable beyond compare. I couldn't help but turn the pages until I was done with this gem. I had loved Book 1 of The Seraphine Chronicles, and now McCray has outdone herself with this first installment of the Wild series. The one thing I didn't like is that she left a rather big cliffhanger -- the reader doesn't get to find out who the rustler is. I guess I'll have to read the other books and find out, not that I wasn't going to anyway! I highly recommend this delicious romantica. Ellora's Cave and Ms. McCray have done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Those Cowboys!!!.......2004-03-17

Wildfire is the first in Cheyenne McCray's Wild series. If you love alpha cowboys this is the book for you, be warned though this is an erotic romance so has graphic sex scenes. Dee Macloud is running her ranch by herself, her ranch hands call her the "Ice Queen" which couldn't be further from the truth. Ten years ago Jake Reynolds left Dee in the middle of their hot love affair without a second thought, or so Dee thinks, but Jake has never forgotten Dee and is back in Arizona looking to take up where he left off. This is a very sexy read and you will not be dissapointed. Ms McCray is an author who is on my must buy list simply because i know she will deliver in her books and i know i haven't wasted my time or money.
