Book Description
In stories that are simple yet elegant, hard-hitting yet poignant, J. California Cooper writes about the search for fulfillment that propels people’s dreams and desires. In “As Time Goes By” a young woman named Futila Ways grows up focusing her dream of a better future on material wealth, only to discover that having everything she ever wanted cannot compensate for the emptiness in her heart. “The Eye of the Beholder” recounts the story of an unattractive young girl, Lily Bea, whose search for love leads her to embrace her own brand of freedom. And in “Catch a Falling Heart” a woman mildly crippled in a fall endures loneliness and solitude until she finds a man and provides a resting place for his love. Each story beautifully conveys the profound human need to seek some sort of satisfaction, just as a wild star seeks a midnight sun.
J. California Cooper’s insights into the hearts and souls of ordinary people and her irresistible storytelling voice have endeared her to fans and critics. As Ms. magazine wrote, “Cooper’s stories beckon. It is as if she is patting the seat next to us, enticing us to come sit and listen.”

Great book!.......2007-08-28
I've read all of j. california cooper's books, and I have to say that she is my favorite author. She has down-home style of writing that draws you into her characters lives and makes you want to just eat her books up! Thank you Ms. Cooper for your meaningful stories!
Not Quite the J. California Cooper I know and Love.......2007-07-25
I must admit that I was somewhat disappointed in this book as it compares to her other novels. I absolutely love J. California and own everything she has ever written, but this book was lacking in a way that I had never seen in her writings. Not every writer can write short stories well. Most can't seem to bring it full circle with a complete "conclusion." She is unique in that she has that ability as a writer; her short stories are full and complete. She is a master story teller. After reading her books, once completed, I am always in anticipation of the "next" one and that may add to my sense of disappointment with this book, but it is still J. California Cooper and that is good enough for me!
Life and the Dream.......2007-05-13
J. California Cooper has a great unique quality of weaving a story that touches the spirit of men and women. These stories along with the many others that she has written over the years cannot compare to other writers. J. is in a class of her own and I highly recommend that you share in the journey.
Speak to My Heart.......2007-02-01
J. California is one author who truly knows how to "speak to my heart" with her stories. This collections of short stories are built on relationships, healings, self esteem and a host of other humanistic emotions. In "As Time Goes By" Futila dreams of having everything she wants, only to wake up and discover that everything she wants CANNOT cure an empty heart. Lily Bea in "Eye of the Beholder" lives for her very own definition of freedom. In the same way stars seek the comfort of the sun the characters in these shorts was seeking the same satisfaction.

Wise, earthy and intimate, these stories are moving parables of the human need to seek some sort of satisfaction, just as a wild star seeks a midnight sun.

WHAT A BOOK!!!!.......2006-01-13
Now my husband is not the Catherine Coulter fan. Having been a Catherine Coulter fan for years, I just now got the chance to read the Star Series. What an excellent book and I fell in love with Chauncey and Delaney. I was drawn into the book and was living their experiences, well done Catherine Coulter. What a way to spend the day. Could not put the book down until I had finished it.
Good rainy afternoon read.......1999-12-31
If you are looking for a diversion on a rainy afternoon, this is the book for you. I bought the book in an airport when I was stuck waiting for a delayed flight, and it really made the time fly. The characters were realistic and not at all like the usual "oh, he is so handsome, so I will fall for him" sort that so many romance authors seem to create. The characters really seemed to struggle with the issues including Chauncey's need for revenge against the man she thought caused her father's death and Delaney's curiosity at her distance. The end was exciting, though the very end seemed to just lose a little steam. If you are looking for a diversion, this is a worthwhile escape for a few hours.
Very exciting and suspenseful!.......1999-12-08
This was a wonderful series! I think this is my favorite of the four. Delaney and Chauncy were meant for each other. You fall in love with the characters from the start. She is determined to seek revenge on Delaney for her father's death and falls in love instead. No matter what happened in the past Delaney is there to find out who is trying to kill her and their love and passion is very strong!
Another HIT!!.......1999-04-23
I love series books. You get to become friends with all the characters, and this series is terrific. This book was a real knuckle biter. I loved it! Onward to number three!

Another great entry!.......2000-03-07
This book is another great entry in the Midnight Louie series, giving us the back story on Darcy McGill and Steven Austin. I really enjoy finding out about the characters before we got to know them in the other Midnight Louie "The cat and the..." books. If only I didn't have to wait until June to find out what happens next...
I'm glad they these books are now in print, as they give the series an added dimension.

Midnight Louie is the cat's pajamas!.......2005-12-03
I was lucky to stumble onto this author and find this book before any of her others. From the first page, I couldn't put the book down. Midnight Louie is the narrator and what makes this so great? He's a cat! And every so many chapters, he gets to interject.
This fun story is set in the playground of vintage Vegas, which brings back that old magic. The author time warps you to experience all of the glitz and blinding neon of the city and really makes you feel like you are there with the characters. I totally fell in love with Nicky Fontana and Miss Van von Rhine and I'm thrilled that there are three more books in this series!
This is a beautiful love story with classic romance without getting gushy. It also has elements of mystery woven in that don't all get explained. I also loved the way the author put words together making the language poetic without being flowery.
But my favorite part was the end where, after the story is told, there is an interview between the cat and the author, explaining things in the book and about the series that you weren't clued in on. You really start to believe the cat is real! I highly recommend this book.
An Excellent Book.......2000-02-09
I really enjoyed this book. Going back to before the series as we know it began and getting history on some of the characters gives the book another dimension. This book would be interesting reading in and of itself, but as an avid fan of the Midnight Louie series, I was thrilled. I can wait to read the remaining three from the beginning of the series.
Excellent, great fun and fast moving........1999-08-14
I have all of Carole Nelson Douglas Midnight Louie and Irene books. Love them and hope they keep coming. Also, get the audios every chance I get. Thanks for hours of enjoyment. I find them very absorbing and entertaining.Wish they came out faster.
Midnight Louie's first great tale.......1999-05-22
Though his family is renowned as Mafiosi, Nicky Fontana runs a completely legal business. He currently plans to renovate an aging Las Vegas landmark into a major, first class casino. He hires Van Von Rhine to oversee the operation, giving her a budget of just under $8 million.
However, an unknown assailant wants Nicky to fail. That individual will do anything to make sure that the renovation project fails. Midnight Louie, feline private eye extraordinaire, decides to investigate in order to expose the culprit. As Louie snoops, Van struggles with adapting to the Vegas glitter as well as her personal attraction to Nicky.
THE CAT AND THE KING OF CLUBS is the full version of Midnight Louie's debut novel. The publisher sliced and diced this tale and the subsequent three other books that made up the original series. However, Carole Nelson Douglas has brought the gem back to its original glittering self. The who-done-it story line remains fresh and even more fulfilling this time around as Louie shows why he owns the universe. Fans of the series will take great pleasure with this "expanded" reprint. The audience will feel elation over the upcoming release of the other three tales from the original set that established Louie as one of the best feline sleuths on the prowl.

Purrr-fect.......2000-05-27
Long before Midnight Louie adopted Temple Barr, or as much as this womanizing cat can settle down with anyone, he made his home at the Crystal Phoenix. Nicky Fontana and his wife Van von Rhine own the classic Vegas small hotel and casino and are making it a must go to place in Las Vegas. Inside the hotel is the Crystal Curtain Music Theatre where Gentleman Johnny Diamond sings the tunes that have made him the heartbreaker of millions of women.
Someone stalks Johnny, sending him letters threatening to kill the performer. Nicky beefs up security to the point that the crooner begins to go stir crazy and needs a taste of diversion. Professional gambler Jill O'Roarke is hired to teach Johnny how to play poker. They fall in love, but each of them conceals secrets that could tear them apart.
Superstar Midnight Louie's role in this delightful prequel from his seafood salad days is that of watcher. He studies the strange behavior of humans as if he is a social anthropologist struggling to understand an alien race. His witty, ironic observations entertain the audience as few charcaters can. Still, he also plays a pivotal role in the superbly designed romantic suspense. Louie proves why he is such a favorite of readers, as Carole Nelson Douglas leaves her audience purring for more.

Absolutely the most accurate and most convenient to use........2003-05-12
When I was introduced to the Rosicrucian ephemeris I promptly sold the one that I had been using. In my opinion, this is the most accurate and convenient ephemerides in existance (it is based on the newest standards of the International Astronomical Union, as well as, the latest research conducted by NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.) It is also computer typeset to eliminate human error. You have all the data you need for planet and lunar node calculation right in front of you on a single page. Plus time is based on midnight and not noon figures, so it saves you a correction in your calculations.
Perhaps I am old fashion in my thinking, but if you cannot use an ephemerides and a book of tables to erect a natal horoscope by hand (at least once) then you do not really understand astrology.
The introduction for this edition is written in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. The tables use standard symbolism that any user should understand regardless of language.
As for this volume being "obsolete", the vast majority of people currently living were born between 1900 and 2000, so this will be a useful tool for many years to come.

THE CAT AND THE JACK OF SPADES.......2001-10-09
JUST WAS BROWSING FOR NEW MIDNIGHT LOUIE BOOKS WHEN I SAW THESE. MY MAIN COMMENT IS ABOUT THE REVIEW WRITTEN BY THE MAN WHO SAYS THIS IS NOT A LARGE PRINT BOOK. WHILE THIS IS NICE TO KNOW NOT ONE WORD ON WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT.
This is NOT a Large print edition.......2001-01-27
This is NOT repeat NOT a large print edition. My wife finally got tired of waiting for the regular one and had me order this one (she doesn't use a computer much). It is set in 11 pt Plantin font, which is probably what the others are, but it's regular print. I wanted you to know in case you were waiting for the regular print edition. As far as the book itself is concerned, my wife says not enough Louie, too much talking. People aren't as developed as in the other books. She does wish the authoress would tell in the current series what happened to some of the people introduced in these prequels but not in the current series. She feels the invention of him being a missing English Lord was a bit much.
Book Description
Welcome to Scarlet Oak Manor, Louisiana. This plantation has a tragic history, tied to a magnificent sapphire that carries a wonderful gift, and a terrible curse.... the Midnight Star. Twice already, the Midnight Star has brought tragedy to Scarlet Oak. But when the Manor's new owner, Remy Terreau, attempts to turn the centuries old plantation into a hotel, he could find he's getting more than he bargained for. The spirits of Scarlet Oak Manor are walking, and Remy's new chef, Gillian Martin, might be the only one who can save him.

Intrigue.......2007-01-07
Remy Terreau has purchased Scarlet Oak Manor outside of New Orleans with the intention of transforming it into an upscale resort hotel. He didn't plan on the FBI barging in hunting possible corpses in a serial abduction investigation; nor did he bargain for a cursed property, with ghosts, hauntings, and all sorts of unusual and frightening paranormal phenomena. In fact, one of the prime FBI investigators claimed to have encountered, and spoken with, Lyle Forrester, Scarlet Oak Manor's original owner, deceased nearly two centuries ago, in the bayou; Lynsee Frost insisted that Lyle had told her he was still hunting for the Midnight Star, and then identified him from an antique photograph in the Manor's family gallery.
Even worse for Remy is that now he is persistently dreaming of Susannah Wilmington Forrester, Lyle's young and ill-fated wife, and the horrible fate that had befallen her. In her dreams she is begging Remy to rescue her. Remy can't understand why his cousin Garner, a certified paranormal investigator, isn't the one experiencing these nightly onslaughts. Remy isn't a ghost hunter, he's a businessman trying to turn a very run-down property into a paying resort.
Esther Mitchell delivers her installment in the ongoing story of the Midnight Star's curse with aplomb and intrigue, for which she is noted. At times ghostly, at others down-to-earth, Intrigue is an intriguing story, which can be read with or without the benefit of reading the entire series; but I definitely deem the series worth acquiring.
