Harper Hall.......2007-09-25
I know I wasn't supposed to read this book first, but it was on the free book cart at the library. And I've wanted to read McCaffery for some time now. I'd give this book four a half stars. I'd like to have given it five. But I'll get to that in a minute. Her prose is elegant. Each of her characters is clearly defined. The main, Menolly, is strong and modest, but often bleek and insecure because of her background. Thus her behavior makes sense at times when she is overly passive when she shouldn't be. As well as apologizing for every little thing. However, her giving a shiner to Benis was priceless. I love the tiny info on the Fort Sea Hold, and look I look forward to getting clear description when I read DragonSong. The only problem I had with this book was there was no real action, besides the brawl at the Gather. Though I must say, the book was not boringt any time. But I did have to put it down from time to time because its lack of action.
Can't wait to read more McCaffery. I see why she's one of the leading authors in the SciFi/Fantasy genre.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Menolly is now at the Harper Hall. However, she is a geek/nerd and doesn't fit in with all the girls who like doing the standard chick things. Plus there just happens to be a bunch of fire lizards following her around.
She also has to deal with the problem of choosing or being asked to choose a specialisation and someone to be a mentor.
Great if you like Sci Fiction.......2007-05-13
The Pern series of books from Anne McCaffery are great. Better if you read them in order, (look online at her website for recommendations). This is futuristic science fiction, but if you liked Aregon, you would probably like this series too
A Wonderful Continuation of the Story of Menolly and her Fire Lizards.......2007-01-31
After finishing Dragonsong, I simply had to dive into the next book of The Harper Hall Trilogy, Dragonsinger. No way could I resist that! And as I did with the first book, I found myself completely captivated and in love with the story.
This book picks up just as the first one ends. Menolly is delivered to Harper Hall. There she not only continues with her musical education, she tries to adjust to her new life and the community around her. Plus, she's got her brood of nine fire lizards alone for the ride!
What I loved most about this book was watching Menolly's reactions to the master harpers. They are all wonderfully, quirky old gents and even when one attempts to make a joke, Menolly is at a loss and thinking she did something wrong. Having been raised in an environment where she was continually unloved and unwanted, her new home a mixture of shock and awe for her. Yes, this is a tale that tugs at the heartstrings.
I also adored each and every fire lizard, with their clever and unique personalities. The prim queen, Beauty, is my favorite. She poses, knowing just how pretty she is. And she commands and bosses the other fire lizards about. Yet, when another queen is in the picture, the two become chatty like gossipy old ladies. Fitting to her name if you ask me. :)
McCaffrey has forever endeared these characters to me. This story will be added to my shelf of books I like to reread - a rare thing for this slow reader.
On a side note, I loved how well McCaffrey described playing the instruments and singing. She captures it well and accurately from what I can tell. (My dad is the musician, not me :P)
Menolly fits in.......2007-01-29
Book two in Harper Hall series takes along with Menolly as she fulfills her lifelong dream of becoming the first female Harper. The timeframe of her achieving said dream is unrealistic given how hard McCaffery convinced us of Pern's prejudices in previous books.
What I truly liked about Menolly's character from Dragonsong was how she basically showed the world she was mature and independent. It drove me nuts at how underconfident and meek she was throughout this entire book. McCaffery presents this in vivid detail, the same way she presented Menolly's character in book one. I wanted Menolly's tough, sweet stoic attitude to shine, but it is repressed in this new intimidating setting of Harper Hall. The one time it seems she stands up for herself, she has a breakdown (with lots of angst) regarding the incident, ruining the impact. This bothered me, because our wonderful independent heroine is now another cog in her medieval society, and happy about it.
The fire lizards are there too, and McCaffery uses them as a device for helping Menolly fit in faster. Since the all important people are getting fire lizard eggs, they invariably bestow special attention on Menolly as she helps them.
This is a wonderful novel for young children, especially those that love music or are afraid of a private boarding school experience. It has no adult language or situations, but if you are an adult looking for unique depth or strong personalities, you will be disappointed.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Dragondrums is a similar sort of story to Dragonsong/Dragonsing. A young man with musical talent has the puberty thing hit. He ain't singing soprano anymore.
So, off he goes wandering on adventures, gets into trouble, and makes friends with a fire lizard, and takes up drumming, eventually settling down.
This book is a winner!.......2007-05-27
My admiration for Anne McCaffrey knows no bounds. I think she has created some wonderful fiction. I credit her Harper Hall series with fostering a great love of reading and music in me at a very young age. I found the first book DragonSong at the library when I was about eleven or twelve and proceeded to devour everything I could find that she had put out. I eagerly awaited each new book. I became interesting in vocal music after reading these books and decided to try out for our choir in high school, choral music is still an important part of my life.
I feel badly for the people who came to this book expecting something that they did not find, namely it looks like folks thought it was going to be about Menolly and were disappointed to find it was about Piemur.
In this book as with all of her Pernese novels McCaffrey has constructed a wholly believeable world (Dragons and fire lizards? Sure! I'm down with that!) inhabited with wonderful characters who live interesting lives. They are by no means perfect. Most of the major characters evolve or transform at some point, so I have never found the world stale or boring.
A favorite wrinkle of mine is that there is no smoking on Pern. I always thought that was funny when it was compared to Tolkien's world and those of other Sci-Fi authors. No one is lighting up a pipe, no one is smoking anything. It is funny how much time can be spent padding a novel with smoking business. No smoking on Pern. At least I couldn't find any. Which was a wonder for me since when I was a kid my Mom smoked and I hated it.
I think these books are a perfect intro to Sci-Fi/Fantasy for young readers.

Surprise -- it's not about Menolly.......2007-02-22
*sigh* I've been loathe to write about this book. I'm hoping I've distanced myself enough from it to actually avoid a rant. I guess we shall see....
Dragondrums is the final book in McCaffrey's Harper Hall Trilogy and personally, this story collection should have ended with the two books. There was no need for a third, especially when it wasn't even about the heroine of the first two books, Menolly.
The focus of the third book is on Piermur, a boy that befriended Menolly in the second book, Dragonsinger. His voice cracks and he's forced to face the idea that when his voice does finish changing, he may no longer have a singer's voice. In the meantime, the Masterharper puts him to work by sending him on missions as a messenger and spy. He also becomes a drum messenger.
While Piermur's antics as a troublesome kid in Dragonsinger seemed amusing, in this book he merely comes across as a jerk. He lies to his friends and uses their concern for him just to get more pies. Personally, I felt that after three years he would have grown up some. Guess not.
I didn't like how everyone dismissed his behavior with a "boys will be boys" mentality. Stealing a fire lizard egg just because he wanted a lizard was childish and annoying to read about.
There is also a point where he gets seriously injured by other kids. These murderous natured children were punished with a slap on the wrist. Again with the "boys will be boys."
I also expected us to see more of Piermur dealing with the loss of his voice and the prospect of never getting to sing as well again. In the end, he never even tries to sing again. Instead he makes a dramatic change to his life that makes no sense and seemed to come out of left field. And everyone around him thought his decision was perfect. This confused me.
On a side note, we did get to see Menolly some. But it was mostly in passing. And sadly, in a scene that just disturbed me. There is a sex scene between her and Sebell that bordered on being rape. Sebell's fire lizard was in heat and she mated with another lizard. Since owners of fire lizards experience each other's emotions, he was overwhelmed by what she was feeling and his own feelings for Menolly. He just had to have her. And I had to think...this is a kid's book right?
Anyway, I hope this didn't come off as too much of a rant. I was disappointed with this book. Bored through most of it. And just creeped out by it too. Ick.
I wanted this book to be about Menolly.......2007-01-29
As the third in the Harper Hall series that has exclusively followed the character of Menolly, I began reading this with the expectation it would be about how the more mature Jouneywoman Harper Menolly changes her society into a less stupid and less sexist Pern.
Instead I get a book about that funny one dimensional scamp Piemur from Dragonsinger. As a plus, by the end of this book he is no longer one dimensional, and I understand his character. Or I think I do... because if I did, I'd know why he makes those choices in the end of the novel. Those choices directly opposed to his precious dreams and wild ambitions throughout the entire novel of Dragondrums.
So yeah, this book disappointed on multiple levels. This book is a decent adventure story of Pern with firelizards, but I wanted more than that. If you don't have my expectations, add more stars. Dragondrums is not relevant to the other books in this 'trilogy,' and the amount of loose ends (especially about Menolly) left at the end of novel are huge.

What more to say than, GET THIS BOOK, IT'S ONE OF THE BEST SALVATORE BOOKS OUT THERE!! LOVE IT, LOVE IT, AND LOVE IT!!
The Underdark awaits!.......2007-08-31
Exile is book 2 in The Dark Elf Trilogy.
Exile tells the story of Drizzt outside of the Drow Cities in the open wilderness of the Underdark. For the ten years following his abandoning his house, he is left with no one but his faithful Guenhwyvar, a magical Panther he had acquired in Homeland. He is also met with great dangers that he meets with the business ends of his scimitars. Struggling with conflicting emotions, which involve his failure in Menzoberranzan and a deep grief for his father and friend Zaknafein, he makes his way to the surface to face newer dangers.
As always, Salvatore writes an amazing adventure.
great series.......2007-02-23
just a thorughly enjoyable book, series, main charatcer. drizzt is very likeable and learning about the world he lives is very interesting and intriguing.
Another Great Book!.......2006-12-03
Exile, the second book in the Dark Elf Trilogy and a great follow-up novel to Homeland. Drizzt's epic tale only becomes better as it goes on. After reading Homeland, I was very eager to get my hands on Exile. So, the next day I went to my local library and checked out a copy. This book introduces us to new places in the Underdark other than Menzoberranzan. I finished the book and could not wait to read the last book in the trilogy. This book was just as good as Homeland and provided more insight into the Drow way of life.
Great follow up to Homeland, and another underdark masterpiece.......2006-09-02
This book follows well the footsteps of Homeland. It continues the story of our favorite dark elf and goes further than Homeland in the sense that it breaks out into the vast underdark beyond Menzoberranzan. While I thouroughly enjoyed this book, I did somewhat miss the house politics and negative energy that filled the pages of Homeland. Trust me though, this book does not dissapoint. There is still plenty of Drow deceit to be wrought here, and its told in amazing fashion by one of fantasies best authors.
The characters are well developed and very interesting. One of the most interesting characters in the book may be Clacker, a Pech turned Hook Horror that becomes an intricate part of the story later on in the tale. Zin-Carla is also an amazing "character" if you will, as it takes on a form that we all know well from the previous book. Overall Exile was a fun read that showed me a side of Drizzt Homeland did not. A Drow succumbing to his dark side, the hunter, in an effort to survive the wraths of the underdark without his kin. Recommended! A must read in the bridge from Homeland to Sojourn.

Read all 3 books when published separately. Enjoyable reading for fals of the Pern stories.
Stayed up WAY too late to finish it........2007-09-06
I reread the Dragons of Pern series a few months ago, but didn't pick this one up until yesterday. Once I started reading, I could not put it down. It is easy to feel sorry for Mellony and her life. Having read the Dragons of Pern books, I knew how it turns out, but it still leaves you wondering HOW she will become a Harper.
Many people have said they found this book confusing and that it leaves you hanging. It leaves you hanging because it is the first book in a trilogy. As for confusing, if you haven't read the main Dragons of Pern books, yes, it will be confusing. This book is not a stand-alone, but is intended to go along with what you already know. (Several main characters from the other books make appearances and one major event is relived from a different point of view.)
If you haven't read most of the other Pern books, read them first. Then get this one. You won't be sorry.

Dune: The Butlerian Jihad
Frank Herbert’s Dune series is one of the great creations of imaginative literature, science fiction’s answer to The Lord of the Rings.
Decades after Herbert’s original novels, the Dune saga was continued by Frank Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert, in collaboration with Kevin J. Anderson. Working from Frank Herbert’s own notes, the acclaimed authors reveal the chapter of the Dune saga most eagerly anticipated by readers: the Butlerian Jihad.
Throughout the Dune novels, Frank Herbert frequently referred to the war in which humans wrested their freedom from “thinking machines.” In Dune: The Butlerian Jihad, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson bring to life the story of that war, a tale previously seen only in tantalizing hints and clues. Finally, we see how Serena Butler’s passionate grief ignites the struggle that will liberate humans from their machine masters; here is the amazing tale of the Zensunni Wanderers, who escape bondage to flee to the desert world where they will declare themselves the Free Men of Dune. And here is the backward, nearly forgotten planet of Arrakis, where traders have discovered the remarkable properties of the spice melange. . . .
Dune: The Machine Crusade
More than two decades have passed since the events chronicled in Dune: The Butlerian Jihad. The crusade against thinking robots has ground on for years, but the forces led by Serena Butler and Irbis Ginjo have made only slight gains; the human worlds grow weary of war, of the bloody, inconclusive swing from victory to defeat.
The fearsome cymeks, led by Agamemnon, hatch new plots to regain their lost power from Omnius--as their numbers dwindle and time begins to run out. The fighters of Ginaz, led by Jool Noret, forge themselves into an elite warrior class, a weapon against the machine-dominated worlds. Aurelius Venport and Norma Cenva are on the verge of the most important discovery in human history-a way to "fold" space and travel instantaneously to any place in the galaxy.
And on the faraway, nearly worthless planet of Arrakis, Selim Wormrider and his band of outlaws take the first steps to making themselves the feared fighters who will change the course of history: the Fremen.
Here is the unrivaled imaginative power that has put Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson on bestseller lists everywhere and earned them the high regard of readers around the globe. The fantastic saga of Dune continues in Dune: The Machine Crusade.
Dune: The Battle of Corrin
It has been fifty-six hard years since the events of Dune: The Machine Crusade. Following the death of Serena Butler, the bloodiest decades of the Jihad take place. Synchronized Worlds and Unallied Planets are liberated one by one, and at long last, after years of victory, the human worlds begin to hope that the end of the centuries-long conflict with the thinking machines is finally in sight.
Unfortunately, Omnius has one last, deadly card to play. In a last-ditch effort to destroy humankind, virulent plagues are let loose throughout the galaxy, decimating the populations of whole planets . . . and once again, the tide of the titanic struggle shifts against the warriors of the human race. At last, the war that has lasted many lifetimes will be decided in the apocalyptic Battle of Corrin.
In the greatest battle in science fiction history, human and machine face off one last time. . . . And on the desert planet of Arrakis, the legendary Fremen of Dune become the feared fighting force to be discovered by Paul Muad'Dib in Frank Herbert's classic, Dune.

In the Beginning.......2007-08-12
If you are a Dune fan and haven't read any of the various new titles I urge you to visit the Dune novel website which gives a chronological listing of all the Dune novels, beginning with this trilogy.
In this exciting trio the reader is taken back to the distant past of the Dune universe. Meet the ancestors of the Atreides and Harkonnen families. The reader will also have a front row seat for the birth of such Dune Legends as the Spacing Guild, the Suk School, the first Fremen of Dune, the first Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, discovery of the spice Melange, the first Space Guild Navigator...all played out and woven into the backdrop story of the Butlerian Jihad, humanity's epic battle for freedom from the Thinking Machines.
Kudos to Frank's son Brian and coauthor Kevin Anderson for a fantastic beginning to the growing world of Dune.
Read it for the back story but don't expect anything as deep or as well written as the original Dune........2007-07-18
Meh, so so.
Brian is clearly not nearly the writer his father was, (seems to always be the case when two writers collaborate, doubly so when one of the writers is the son.) and some of the names/concepts/plot lines are totally ridiculous. "Omnious Prime" - Seriously? (I thought he was a transformer?) But it gets better; He controls multiple planets and the way he keps all his brains synchronized is to send a ship around to each planet and have it update and be updated.
Just the one ship.
Just the one single ship that the enemy, (us humans) could maybe intercept and load with a virus? I mean I don't wanna wreck the plot but really? that's the plot? Still, it's nice to get the back story and know the whys and wherefores behind that Jihad and why there are no computers in Dune.
The major problem I had with this though is that I constantly felt as if they kept rehashing and stretching the book out. It's as if they where getting paid by the word. Perhaps if because the original books where so thick, these should be thick too, and just like the student that double spaces their essay, it doesn't really work . Instead it drones on and on. Their editor should have paired it right back and it would have made for a less painful read.
In the end I liked the closure and history these books provided - but these, and the Houses of Dune series little more than the Scifi equivalent of a beach book. Also these prequels help set up the final ending books of the original Dune saga that where never finished because of Frank Herbert's death.
My advice; buy them used or listen to the books on CD.
Not just for Dune fans.......2007-02-08
These three books are fun to read! Well written, easy to read prose style. In fact, these are easier to read than the original Dune novel. The characters are interesting, lots of things going on. Very enjoyable.
If you never were a Dune fan, these books still would be fun to read, because they stand on their own. If you have been a Dune fan, these novels provide answers, such as: Who was the first to ride a sandworm? How was space folding discovered? Where did the Fremen come from, and how were they named? Many sub-plots and interesting characters that we care about make this my favorite sci-fi/fantasy epic.
As a Dune fan, how cold I not love it?.......2007-01-10
I really loved all three books! I couldn't wait to finish the first, so I could begin the second! Same thing with the second...
It's very good being able to continue reading all about Dune universe, even without the great creator, Frank Herbert.
It's a great reading experience and in the top of the "must read" list for any scy-fi fan.
Dune Book Set.......2007-01-10
Recently purchased this trio set of Dune novels and it is GREAT. The box set is a sturdy, durable set that will last for many years. I am glad to own them as part of my collection.

Great Book and Great Trilogy.......2007-07-04
Having thoroughly enjoyed the first two books of The Icewind Dale trilogy, I was eager to find out how this particular Drizzt Do'Urden story ends in the The Halfling's Gem.
Again, I was not disappointed. The book has a very straight forward plot and very good subplots to draw the reader in. The development of the main characters falls into place very well. From reading later novels in the series and knowing how things eventually turn out, I still find myself concerned for the characters in each of the harrowing situations they face and curious as to how they get out of each of the jams they are in.
Many of the non-Drizzt Forgotten Realms novels I have read contain too many subplots for my own liking. I like to have a few going on at the same time, but too many get me too confused, and I find myself resigned to just trying to keep up with the main storyline. I believe that is the one thing I have enjoyed most about each of R.A. Salvatore novels. I know I am going to get mystery, intrigue, action, and adventure, but not so much so that the main story gets lost. This is important to me for any fiction novel I read, but especially for the Forgotten Realms titles. The driving story behind each Drizzt novel is his relationship with his friends and enemies. His goal in life to conquer the prejudices and stereotypes against his race. His story is one of finding peace within himself and with the world around him.
An Exciting Conclusion to the Trilogy........2007-01-01
The third book in the Icewind Dale Trilogy is a great conclusion. Our favorite little Halfling Regis develops from a shallow somewhat one-sided character into a deep and seven fingered (read the book to get the refrence) person. But of course this book has all the great fights and adventure that has become the staple of the series. We are introduced to several new and important chracters and get to see Drizzt fight some pirates!
Excellent.......2006-03-24
Read this years ago and recently revisited this series. One of my first from Salvatore and still a favorite. great characters and writing, and exciting action.
If you like books like this one, might I suggest another I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.
AWESOME.......2006-02-17
R.A. Salvatore is my present favorite Author. I don't think many would agree with me but at least for me, as a personal opinion, he's at Tolkien's level. This as all his other books are a must read for fantasy, D&D or LOTR lovers.
Very Gripping Conclusion.......2005-12-13
This one took me 3 days to get through, its that good. Whenever i would leave to hang out with friends or something, i would tell myself i should be at home reading!
This one delivers everywhere you could expect! Really, if you have read The Crystal Shard & Streams of Silver, dont abuse yourself by not reading this! This is Vintage material.
Showdowns between Drizz't and Entreri are very heart pounding from the get-go. Since you're looking forward to it the whole time, its just that great when you finally get to it!
Pick it up, read it, dig it. It's very good.

Salvatore's original foray into The Forgotten Realms.......2007-08-20
Series review: The Icewind Dale Trilogy
Yet another excellent series by R. A. Salvatore, set in the Forgotten Realms genre. Some have criticized it for being rather derivative (i.e., Wulfgar the Barbarian = Fritz Leiber's Fafhred, Bruenor the Dwarf = JRRT's Gimli, Regis the Halfling = JRRT's Merry Brandybuck, etc.), but I was able to enjoy the series despite those parallels.
It's not Lord of the Rings, but it's still enjoyable none the less ... and it ranks high among the growing plethora of novels set in the Forgotten Realms sub-genre. Fans of the D20/AD&D (Advanced Dungeons and Dragons) gaming system (by Wizards of the Coast) who like simple, straight-forward fantasy action, with plenty of familiar spells, familiar monsters, and familiar magic items, will enjoy this series.
Salvatore's popular character, Drizzt, makes his first appearance in this series.
Drizzt.......2007-08-13
At first this story seemed to imaginative but later on after everythings been introduced the story realy begins. I would recomend this for the heavy science fiction fantasy reader.
A book that will surely keeps you attention.......2007-08-09
It is incredible to see such good work to be continued and keep up the same level of criativity and originallity.
R.A. Salvatore starts this huge story about Drizzt Do'Urden and the Forgotten Realms with the Dark Elf Trilogy and carry on with the Icewind Dale Trilogy, which starts with this book. Not only is the story so full of events and very well written but also is incredible how this trilogy continues the story and is one great story at the same time!
What I want to say is that even though you haven't read the Dark Elf Trilogy, you can read this book and you will understand the whole story this trilogy tells you. But, if you read the Dark Elf Trilogy, you will that this trilogy does continues the story and adds much more to it. A deep plot, excelent dialogs and very well develop characters make this book very interesting and will surely keep you attention until the end.
By the time you finish reading this book, and the other two books in the Icewind Dale Trilogy (Stream of Silver and the Halfling's Gem), you will want to buy the Legacy of the Drow, which is the trilogy that carries this story further on (Legacy of the Drow consist of three books - The Legacy, Starless Nights, Siege of Darkness). And, when you finish the Legacy of the Drow, you definitely will want to read the Quadrilogy (i wonder if this word exists hehehe) Path of Darkness, which will lead this huge story (with a very deep plot) to an end.
Well, not a real end... because you also have the Hunter's Blade Trilogy, which also features Drizzt Do'Urden and his friends.
Enough said, this book is a must if you are already a fan, and if you are beggining to read this kind of literature, R.A. Salvatore is one of the best writers and this is part of his most famous work (The Legend of Drizzt, which consists of 13 books).
This book is pretty good, but its the ones that come later that shine.......2007-07-12
Ignoring chronological order, my first R.A Salvatore experience was with the Legacy of the Drow collection, so when I went back to read all the books in order, I was a little disapointed with this.
While a very interesting read, this first book is litle more than your standard fantasy book, full of battles, goblins, orcs and the like. However it does set the groundwork for some greater novels ahead.
So do buy this book, but dont let its simplicity cheat you out of the later books to come. There is much more depth in the later books and they are why R.A Salvatore is a such a well known author.
Good Start of a Great Series!.......2007-07-09
I love this book! I've reread it so many times over the last 17 years, and still enjoy it. It is the book that introduced me to the worlds of fantasy, and left me thoroughly addicted. Drizzt will forever be one of my most favorite characters of fiction.
This is the first book that Salvatore wrote in this wonderful series. It may not be the strongest link in the chain, and to fully appreciate the storyline and character development you need to continue reading the rest. There are three things I enjoy about his books: The detailed portraits he draws of the different communities of his setups, the way small events twist and turn to meet at the end for a good ending, and his description of battle scenes, especially big ones!
I read some reviews that accuse the book of being a Tolkien rip-off, and that's too harsh. They should give the book a break and not drive away potential readers with such comments. The similarities that they may be referring to are minor. Also, there is something that must be taken into consideration here in defense of the book: It was Salvatore's first book, as an aspiring new author, and who may I ask, in the field of fantasy has not been affected by Tolkien's classic masterpiece?? In later books, the story and characters evolve and Salvatore's true style shines through his work.
The new cover art by Lockwood, is amazing! I actually bought second copies of all the books just for that! Finally an artist who does Drizzt and the other characters justice! Some of the covers of the previous editions were hideous to say the least!! How could publishers stick just any picture onto some author's hard work?
Oh, and the jagged edges of the pages look and feel really cool!
I recommend that you give it a try: everyone has a different taste and nobody can really tell you whether you'll like it or not. If you hate it, just put it aside... but if you like it, it will open the doors to Salvatore's world, with many books to keep you entertained for the next several months!

as I have askethed, so I have been giveth.......2007-07-20
an excellent book, all that I was hoping for in a great conclusion, and yet an amazing lead into the crystal shard book.
we have asked and Salvatore has given, a great book for one who loves fine characters, great plots, and above all, a good story.
sets a great and believable stage for life above ground for drizzt.......2007-02-23
again, enjoyed the book, nothign spectacular, but enough creativity, action, and drizzt to make it 5 stars. one of the most likable charatcers ive ever read about it, i like his silent sidekick also.
BEAUTIFUL!.......2007-01-08
The graphic novel adaptation of R.A. Salvatore's monumental Dark Elf Trilogy comes to an exciting conclusion in Sojourn from Devil's Due Publishing. Drizzt Do'Urden has fled from his home deep under the surface with his faithful companion Guenhwyvar, the magical black panther, always on the run from his Drow who wish to kill him. Despite the sun weakening him, Drizzt cannot help but stare at each new dawn in his strange new world. He comes upon a village of peaceful farmers, observing them from afar, and even killing the Gnolls who want his aid in attacking the small settlement.
But when a family of farmers is murdered, Drizzt is blamed sending a vengeful hunter named McGristle on his trail. Drizzt slays the real killers, two Barghests from the lower planes but finds himself on the run from McGristle, and a party of adventurers led by the Ranger Dove Falconhand. When Drizzt aids them in battle against a group of stone giants, Dover realizes that Drizzt is a friend and ends the search for him. McGristle, though, is driven by hatred and presses on, trailing Drizzt all across the Forgotten Realms. Will Drizzt ever find acceptance in a world that is conditioned to believe that all Drow are evil?
Devil's Due sparkles with the final part of Salvatore's trilogy. One of the main themes of his story was that pall of isolationism. Drizzt is not only an outcast among his own kind, but he's an outcast among all kind. He's constantly harassed and driven away by those who fear him for no good reason often times other than the (much deserved) evil reputation of the Drow. Andrew Dabb's script does a great job of keeping this a focal point of the tale.
The pencils of Tim Seeley, a great team of inkers, and colors by Blond are once again a strong point to the book. Outside of the confines of the Underdark the artists are given a little more freedom to open up their expanse and create a more vivid and rich setting for Drizzt. Fans will be happy to know that Drizzt's adventures will continue in The Crystal Shard and Devil's Due will be presenting more of Salvatore's work with their adaptation of his DemonWars series. Devil's Due pulled off another great win!
A Great Conclusion........2006-12-03
Sojourn is the last book in the Dark Elf Trilogy and a great conclusion. Drizzt, after all his adventures in the Underdark, has finally made it onto the surface. This book introduces us to some great new characters, one of whom will eventually become one of Drizzt's most powerful enemies, and tells us how he ended up in Icewind Dale. This book is a great note to go out on and leaves you wanting more.
Enjoyable tale that brings Drizzt out of the underdark .......2006-09-02
This is the last book in the Dark Elf Trilogy that tells the tale of how Drizzt fares in the surface world. I think its a great follow up to Exile, and really puts into perspective the challenges a dark elf faces in the eyes of surface dwellers that do not want to accept him. Once again, Salvatore creates memorable characters that heavily influence Drizzt's life. He learns and gains much wisdom in this book and I think its a necessary bridge to Icewind Dale.
Although I admit I missed the underdark, Sojourn is still a very enjoyable read. Salvatore presents the material in a very believable manner and we really get to see inside the struggling character Drizzt Do'Urden. By the end of this book, he finally comes into his own and moves onto bigger and better things in the Icewind Dale Trilogy. Welcome home :-)

Wow........2007-09-02
Wow. This is the best fantasy since Lord of the Rings and way easier written. Though Tolkiens world is undeniably the best ever written it is much harder to read. Streams of silver by R.A. Salvatore takes you in depth in a world written in layers of imagination. Drizzt's unending strugle of who he is go's to the extreme whence he meats a shadow of who he might have been. This book is a must have for fantasy readers.
That's Amazing.......2007-08-19
First of all, i'd like to say this saga is the best one I have ever read. To begin with the adventure, the companions who set off for the mithral halls were wonderful, and Drizzt is more powerful than never before.
The landscapes are gorgeous as well as the Salvatore's descriptions. I'd follow the back cover advice: "If you read only one fantasy novel in your life time. Let it be this one"
Amazing story
A leisurely walk to Bruenor's ancient home.......2007-07-27
Streams of Silver is a very entertaining tale about Drizzt and his friends searching for Bruenor's mountain home. As is expected, they encounter all kinds of enemies and monsters along the way. There is also someone very dangerous who is stalking one of the companions...looking for his master's stolen property. I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the re-release of The Halfling's Gem: The Legend of Drizzt, Book VI (Forgotten Realms) so I can continue the adventure.
Good book - great series.......2006-05-01
RA Salvatore has created his own cult following in the world of D&D with his culture of the drow and Icewind Dale, the glacier community in the Forgotten Realms. This book picks up right where "Crystal Shard" left off, with Drizzt Do'Urden and pals fulfilling their promise to help dwarf Bruenor Battlehammer find his lost homeland, Mithral Hall. But! Regis the Halfling, always in trouble, is in the worst of his life, and an evil assassin is on his trail. Salvatore treats us to a new hateful-but-seductive villain in Artemis Entreri.
My only complaint about this book is Salvatore's persistent use of the Irish brogue for his characters, which quickly becomes annoying to read (Even though I share the Celtic heritage, PLEASE just say he has an accent, and write normally!), and his seeming attempt to make a PC statement by focusing so heavily on racism. Written at the beginning of the PC 1990s, Salvatore repeatedly refers to the drow as "black elves" in this book rather than Drow, which he doesn't do in any of the other books in this series. Seemed a bit pandering to me, although Drizzt is definitely a victim of prejudice in the drow-hating Realms. Highly recommend as this is a fabulous adventure series!

Customer Reviews:
Salvatore is the master.......2007-08-31
Homeland follows the story of Drizzt from around the time and circumstances of his birth and his upbringing amongst the drow (dark elves). The book takes the reader into Menzoberranzan, the drow homeland. From here, the reader follows Drizzt on his quest to follow his principles in a land where such feelings are threatened. In an essence, the book introduces Drizzt Do'Urden, one of Salvatore's more famous characters from the Icewind Dale Trilogy
This book is the reason I became a fan of RA Salvatore. It is core reading for anyone interested in fantasy, Drow, or just want to read a wonderful adventure.
Probably the best series set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.......2007-08-20
Series review: The Dark Elf Trilogy
This series is easily one of the best written, and the best selling, series in the entire Forgotten Realms genre.
It is the story of Drizzt Do'Urden, a dark elf loner, and an outcast from the underdark. His crime ? Being the lone heart of gold in a civilization devoted to darkness, the worship of an evil goddess, the pursuit of power and endless inter-clan warfare.
The trilogy follows Drizzt, a master swordsman/ranger, as he makes his way out of the underdark, towards a new life among the surface peoples ... only to encounter distrust and bigotry, which he has to fight tirelessly to overcome. It's an epic saga in the grand tradition, with enough swordfights, spells, and monsters to please even the most the most jaded gamer.
Best of the series! Compared to other fantasies..........2007-06-30
When I first discovered the wonderful world of Salvatore, I was in the bookstore, staring at the large, beautiful cover of Sojourn. I than immediantly went and picked up the original cover edictions of The Crystal Shard - The Halfing's Gem. I fell in love with the series, and also picked up Homeland - Sojourn, along with The Thousand Orcs - The Two Swords, (skipping past most of the series, which I somewhat regret now) and read all of them. The Hunter's Blade Trilogy was a disapointment, the plot seemed to drag somewhat, and I found that Salvatore seemed to be losing that magical touch he possed in early novels. Nevetheless, the trilogy was a fun read, and I'm looking forward to Transitions (The Orc King, The Pirate King, and The Ghost King), and maybe the series will come to a nice close.
The Crystal Shard - The Halfing's Gem was fantastic! My favorite being The Halfing's Gem, and the wonderful battle scene at the end. I have yet to go ahead and read Legacy, and the rest of The Legend of Drizzt series.
When I picked up Homeland, I especially loved the cover. Throughout my 7th - 11th grade of reading epic fantasy novels, few had the appeal to keep me reading the series. Dragonlance: Chronicles/Legends/Second Generation & Dragons of a Summer Flame/The War of Souls were nice, but later on the series got a little dry and stale. I missed the original Hero's of the Lance, especialy my favorite Raistlin Majere. Even though he appeared breifly and made his peace with his older brother, Caramon, the series seemed to come to an uncertain halt.
While Homeland is my favorite of the series, I loved Drizzt Do'Urden journey into the Underdark, and his training he received from the drow and his father, Zaknafein Do'Urden. The Dark Elf Trilogy will keep you reading long into the night, and you won't be disapointed with any of the books. Even though Sojourn can be boring at parts, it makes it's point. Drizzt found a place to defend and stay forever...
Excellent - Read this book until 7 am.......2007-03-14
This was an excellent book. While it is not an overly complex read, and I had worried that the book may be a bit simplistic and aimed solely at a younger audience, as I read the book I found my concerns more than met.
I started this book around 2:30 in the morning when I couldn't sleep, intending to read it for 30 minutes, however, the book's story was so engrossing that I ended up finishing the entire book (at 7 am) and heading to buy the next in the series at the local bookstore the next day, which I also read cover-to-cover.
A fascinating series that is highly enjoyable, though a leach on one's time. Highly recommended.
Great! A fantasy epic........2006-12-03
I remember it so well, I had just finished The Return of the King and a friend recommended the Drizzt series. He let me borrow his copy of Homeland, and I was absorbed by the book. The fast-paced fight sequences, the insight into the politics of the drow, and of course Drizzt. The book amazed me. This book is a great start to a great series and you won't want to put it down!
