Book Description

Are you ready to face life’s tests?

God tests a man. Into the flow of everyday life He sends “pop quizzes”–those unexpected trials that show us what we’re made of; that reveal the true quality of our faith and character; that show our willingness to obey Him.

Every Man’s Challenge, part of the best-selling Every Man series, will prepare you to obey. It does take guts to stand firm in facing what life throws our way. We need courage to acknowledge our own weaknesses and to change. We need understanding in handling moral dilemmas and family crises. Thankfully, God has given us the strength we need. By His power we can “participate in the divine nature” and triumph over our sins and the temptations and corruption of the world.

The forty “exams” in this book, comprised of Scripture, stories, and reflective questions, will give you the necessary tools to draw closer to God and win life’s battles. Used in your devotional times or for personal reflection or group study, you’ll find strength to overcome sexual temptation, learn how to love your wife better, and gain increasing confidence to live as Christ did.

In the defining moments of your life, you can obey God and pass the tests that challenge every man.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Reading.......2007-01-06

I enjoyed this book. It has thought provoking questions at the end of the chapters that will test your mettle. The real question isn't how far you are willing to go; it is how real you are willing to be. If you are willing to be brutally honest this book will definitely challenge you. This is especially true if you are married as I found several of the chapters geared towards married men. It is still an excellent read, even for a single guy.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative and Challenging!!.......2005-10-06

Having had this book for some time now, I'd usually read a chapter a day, and other times, a few chapters. That's how it's set up, but the authors provide a great deal to think about, and if you read the whole book in one sitting or two, the reader might miss some important points.

As it is, Arterburn and company has delivered what I'd considered a potentially explosive encourager to a man's walk with Christ. With many chapters dealing with intimacy, marriage, our walk with Christ, and temptation in its many forms, the questions at the end of each chapter are designed to provoke more than thought. More like action!!

It's a fine book and highly recommended!!!

4 out of 5 stars You may learn something new about yourself or others........2007-07-12

Book of interesting questions. I got this because I thought I'd enjoy answering the questions, and getting to know myself even better. Don't you like it when someone asks you a thought provoking question, and you know that they really wanna know your answer? This would be a fun book to use with company or your friends or family. (Course, there may be some questions that would be better left unanswered from some people.) It would also make for a good coffee table book.

Some of these questions I'm sure you've never thought of, or how you'd answer them. The back cover of the book says "Define your boundaries". I know people, who have no idea what their boundaries are or if they even have any. Some questions are fun, some are trivial, and some are more serious. Some will take longer to answer than others.

I think this could also be good excercises for writers, as a writing prompts.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-02-09

This book has sparked some very interesting conversations with my friends.
Thanks for the ideas.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-06

The title of this book is misleading. I expected the book to be about hypotethetical situations where the major question would be "how far will you go?" Unfortunately the book is a bunch of random questions, most of them uninteresting, but several of them thought-provoking. It's good for a laugh but don't expect to have any deep conversations over this thing. I got it as a present but I wouldn't spend any money on it.

4 out of 5 stars This book is great in getting to know friends........2007-01-07

My friends and I had a girls night out and I decided to whip this book and the other "If" book out. Two hours and a few tears later we know more about each other than we did the years that we've known each other. I would recommend it to anybody, not just for social situations and in getting to know others but to get to know yourself better too, your limits, strengths, and weaknesses.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for company........2004-08-19

I really enjoy this book for it's ability to start group conversations around more than the latest movie you saw or plans for next week.

This book has tons of very different, thought provoking questions varying in depth, but really can stimulate good conversations, or simply getting to know people better. Generally testing the limits of morality, and personal views of what boudries can and can't be crossed, it makes for interesting discussion, and you will often find yourself getting way off track as your conversations take surprising turns from the original questions.

A terrific end table book, because it's impossible for guests not to pick it up and start asking away.

Book Description

The most controversial and hotly debated bestseller of the year — read it, and discover the truth for yourself

The Truth About Hillary was viciously attacked by the liberal media, because it revealed how the most prominent Democrat in America has lied, bullied, cheated, and manipulated people in her quest to become our first woman president.

Who is the real Hillary Rodham Clinton? She's a feminist, yet she rode to power on her husband's coattails. She's strong and assertive, yet she has put up with decades of infidelity. She inspires fierce loyalty, yet she frequently stabs her followers in the back. She's a liberal, yet she's pretending to be a moderate.

This edition includes a fascinating new foreword about Edward Klein's head-on collision with the Clinton machine and its allies. BACKCOVER: “This is not a scandal book intended merely to gratify the reader's salacious interests. Instead, Mr. Klein has written a serious political and psychological biography of the most likely next Democratic nominee for president—and thus, quite plausibly I fear, the next president of the United States.”
—Tony Blankley, The Washington Times

“We've already seen what [the media] are willing to do to protect Hillary Clinton. They trashed a perfectly respectable, though highly critical, biography of Hillary by veteran newsman Ed Klein.”
—Fred Barnes, The Weekly Standard

“The press is not curious about what Klein is saying. They are circling the wagons, trying to defend Hillary.”
—Rush Limbaugh

“I've never in the history of this program had more demands to cancel a guest.”
—Sean Hannity

Download Description

"Hillary Rodham Clinton is a polarizing figure in American politics. Love her or hate her, everyone has a strong opinion about the former first lady turned senator who is almost certainly going to run for president in 2008. Despite more than a dozen years in the national spotlight and more than a dozen unauthorized books about her, she has managed to keep many secrets from the public-especially about her turbulent marriage and its impact on her career. There have been plenty of rumors about what Hillary and Bill Clinton did behind closed doors, but never a definitive book that exposes the truth. Bestselling author Edward Klein draws on rare access to inside sources to reveal what Hillary knew and when she knew it during her years as first lady, especially during her husband's impeachment. Klein's book will break news about the choices and calculations she has made over the years. It will also prove that she lied to America in her bestselling autobiography Living History. When she was just a little girl, Hillary Rodham dreamed of becoming the first female president, and her lifelong dream is almost within reach. But just as the swift boat veterans convinced millions of voters that John Kerry lacked the character to be president, Klein's book will influence everyone who is sizing up the character of Hillary Clinton."

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this book.......2007-09-15

Although this book is about Hillary's character, I wouldn't call it an attack on her character. Filled with quotes from people who knew or met her and entertaining anecdotes, this book is a fun read.

I read this book after watching Al Franken and his two cronies conduct an ambush interview with Edward Klein. Franken's entire critique was based on two misspelled names as well as an opinion on the authors picture in the back of the book. Seeing how much Franken and company hated this book was enough to tell me that it was all true.

But this is not the sickening type of description of Hillary found in books like, 'Unlimited Acces' (Aldrich) and 'Dereliction of Duty' (Patterson). It's more of a biography. Parts of the book actually show Hillary in fairly good light.

5 out of 5 stars SHE.......2007-08-25

When the impostor psychologist Dr Greta Penterschloss counsels Gomez and Morticia in the first Addams Family movie, she ensnares them by using the word "displacement." Mr & Mrs Addams eagerly enquire as to whether the condition is unpleasant. "Deeply," the good doctor replies, to their delight. So it is with this book - it is deeply unpleasant, but at the same time as absorbing as Harry Potter.

The unpleasantness is already evident on page one in the Prologue where Monica Lewinsky reminisces about an encounter at Radio City Music Hall in August 1996. From there it's downhill all the way.

Part One: The Big Girl, deals mainly with the revelation of the Lewinsky scandal whilst listing the others, like the cattle-futures windfall, Gennifer Flowers, the health-care debacle, travel office purge, purloined FBI files, the renting of the Lincoln Bedroom and the missing Rose Law Firm files.

Part Two: The Book Of Life, looks at Hillary's childhood, her school years, her first loves, her time at Wellesley College, her internship for a liberal Republican in Washington, Yale Law School, the meeting with Bill and the romance (if it can be called thus), her role in the impeachment of President Nixon, her move to Arkansas, the wedding in 1975 and the politics up to 1982.

Part Three: The White House Years, deals extensively with the running of the White House, the Bimbo problem and how Hillary handled it, her coven of close aides and supporters, the health care fiasco, the Ken Starr investigation and how she successfully played "the wronged woman."

Part Four: The Candidate, explores her successful senate run and Part V: The Road Back To The White House, her role as senator, their marriage of inconvenience since leaving the White House, the 2004 Democratic Convention, and her first moves towards the Presidency in 2008.

Chapter 34: Nixon's Disciple and the Epilogue recount the Nixon visit to the White House in 1993. Afterwards, the old president observed that she inspires fear. This section also speculates on what the "new, new Hillary" might look like: sincere, genuine, forbearing, open-minded, sunny and smiling. The make-over is in progress.

This riveting book concludes with acknowledgments, a bibliography, a note on sources, 31 pages of notes and an index. There are 30 black and white photographs, including the notorious one where She embraces Suha Arafat.

Sheologists now have a tasty variety of titles to choose from, including Barbra Olson's Hell to Pay, Christopher Andersen's American Evita, Bay Buchanan's The Extreme Makeover of Hillary (Rodham) Clinton, R. Emmett Tyrell's Madame Hillary: The Dark Road to the White House and two rather boring recent biographies: Her Way by Jeff Gerth & Don Van Natta Jr. and A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton by Carl Bernstein. But for sheer unpleasantness, it's hard to beat this one by Edward Klein.

1 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY NOT THE WHOLE TRUTH.......2007-08-07

Though presented asa book that is revealing, this book turns out to be a book that reveals nothing; and in fact it appears suspiciously to be a book designed to help Hillary by making it appear that while she is often criticized there is really nothing serious to criticize her for. There are quite a few books of this genre circulatung these days, and they definitely do not apppear to tell the whole truth about Hillary. This book does not do so. But why are there so many of these books? And where might there be a book that really does tell the whole story? Well, there are a lot of these books because people seem to sense that there really is much about Hillary that they need to know and want to know, so there is a market for these books that are "pitched" as "tell all" books; but to find a book (and yes, there is one) that really does "tell all" a reader needs to get and read, and then study, a book presented as a book "of fiction", which turns out to be in fact the book that tells the whole unvarnished true story to the reader who will get and read it; and that book is entitled "The Empress Project". As for this book by Klein, it is not really worth taking time to read. It is not going to reveal anything to the reader. The Empress Project

4 out of 5 stars Keep Hillary OUT of the White House - Once was enough!.......2007-07-31

Very interesting read - but not surprising. She has always come across as a very controling, egotistical, want to be! This book just delivers the information. Keep her out of the White House!

1 out of 5 stars No stars if at all.......2007-06-29

This is another right wing piece of trash written by trash for trash. There will always be a market for this sadly. Let's keep the war going in Iraq, kill off more of our American soldiers, and continue to move backwards.

Ed Klein will eat this book when Hillary Rodham Clinton is elected the 44th President of the United States as no candidate on either side is more qualified than She.

I want to restore the respect for America around the world, therefor, I will be voting for Hillary !

4 out of 5 stars Understanding Chinese characters by their ancestral forms.......2007-05-20

Learning 5000 Chinese characters is a daunting task. It often is a question where and how to start. This book is quite novel in that it presents the most important characters by also showing the original ancient pictoral form. In that way it is easier to remember the modern character. And once one is getting used to the Chinese characters, it then is easier to remember more.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best book to help a student understand Chinese!.......2007-04-17

So many of the books out there are really not user-friendly. In fact, they tend to confuse more than help, but this book is very different. It truly makes understanding Chinese characters very easy and is helping my son to commit what he's learned to memory, the key he was seeking. He won't be taking Chinese officially until next year, but this book has given him a leg up & will definitely be attending college with him next year. We highly recommend "Understanding Chinese Characters by Their Ancestral Forms", by Ping-Gam Go!

5 out of 5 stars The key that unlocks the door!.......2006-10-25

Wow! I wish I had this book before I started studying the Chinese language. Knowing the symbology of the characters makes the language and culture so much more accessible. A "Walk Through Chinatown" will never be the same! I'm giving this book as a Christmas present this year.

4 out of 5 stars It fell apart........2006-08-05

I've been studying with this book and it's very helpful in my work toward learning more chinese characters. I love this book. It contains 288 characters.

The only aspect that I didn't like is the binding on the book which has now officially fallen apart because of so much use.

5 out of 5 stars A fun way to learn characters.......2006-07-07

I have been studying Mandarin for several years, and this was one of the very first books I purchased.

It was difficult for me to begin study of a character-based language because, unlike Spanish or French, Chinese characters lack correlation to the Roman-based alphabet, phonetics, and word construction. This book was wonderful in helping me learn Chinese characters because it made them relevant and interesting. Once I formed a good base, I found it easier and easier to learn more characters.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone starting out with Chinese.

A passport is a really necessary item -- most of the time -- but as this book shows, you don't need one all the time. And, for certain places, a passport is not needed at all. But, how far can you go without one? This book gives you details on that and more. It will make your passport even more valuable, and, significantly, it will give you the lowdown on where you should go -- passport or not. Highly recommended.

Book Description

Stories that trace the decline and fall of a marriage, a history made up of the happiness of growing children and shared life, and the sadness of growing estrangement and the misunderstandings of love.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Greater than the sum of its parts.......2005-09-16

This book is comprised of several short stories, which, like the title characters themselves, often seem like little more than sketches. Although I initially found that frustrating, I eventually came to realize that that works in this book's favor. As the title would suggest, the focus is on the Maples- their marriage, their infidelities- and the brevity and compactness of the stories helps to highlight that. Current events, politics, and the existence and plight of children are of secondary importance, and are mentioned, when they are mentioned at all, primarily to mark the passing of time and to fit the stories into a larger context.

Like a relationship that has ended, in which we remember the beginning and the ending more than the middle, the two stories that stand out the most are the first and the last, "Snowing in Greenwich Village" and the ironically-titled "Here Come the Maples".

"Snowing in Greenwich Village" shows a young couple just beginning their lives together, naive and inexperienced, who know very little about each other. "Here Come the Maples", by contrast, shows a couple who deeply understand one another, the result of familiarity and the passage of time as much as love. By this point, however, it's too late, and there's nothing they can do but go their separate ways. The final sentence is a perfect summation, touching and sad, that, despite its transparent literary-ness, still gets me choked up just recalling it.

5 out of 5 stars Thou still unravishýd bride of quietness..........2004-02-22

Of all the scientific works that have dealt with the subject of love, marriage, divorce, children, parents, and care, none can truly explain the complex emotional waves that crash into lives of people when love is born. John Updike's Too Far Too Go is an astonishing work of literary fiction dealing with the early love and eventual separation of a young man and woman. Using simple language that is refined and beautiful, Updike masterfully explores the complex emotions that arise out of marital conflict and the stress it can cause on others, especially children. Updike's characters are so real that it becomes hard not to feel true sympathy for them. They are flawed as any human being, which makes them so wonderful.

His best work in Too Far To Go is "Separating", the end of the road for the Maples who have been dealing with marital troubles and are contemplating a short separation. Being the child of a divorced family, I found his account so accurate that it felt as though the words and actions of the characters were lifted word for word from a real conversation. It brought tears to my eyes as Richard, who seems always to be the collected father, break down and cry at dinner and confess his own shortcomings to his family. Every couple considering marriage and every child whose life has been so hurt by a divorce should read Updike's work in Too Far To Go. He is truly an American treasure and a master of the English language.

4 out of 5 stars Updike's wistful scenes from a marriage.......2002-05-29

Here come the Maples, John Updike's fictional representation of a typical married couple in mid-to-latter twentieth century America. The Maples fight, drink, and sex their way through life, somehow still managing to find a little happiness. This book, comprised of a number of related short stories, is highly evocative of the mood of the early sixties. The gender roles and sexual repression of earlier decades was giving way to a new kind of freedom, but there was still an awful price to be paid in anger, in jealousy, in heartbreak. Yet somehow, this book explains, life goes on; stands are taken, moves are made, and children are raised, despite all the unpleasantness. The stories are told from the husband's point of view, so it seems odd that we don't get a very clear picture of the 'other woman' who causes so much trouble. But the really big question that hangs over this melancholy little volume is: Why are these people so hung up on sex? Updike takes pains to show how much these people care for each other, but somehow they still can't seem to be satisfied with each other. No answers are offered here, but no judgments are passed, either. Essentially, we're presented with a novel of manners that documents (for future generations) a particular time and lifestyle.

As always, Updike's prose is as flawless as his characters are flawed. Confused, weak, vacillating, frequently suffering from some self-inflicted or psychosomatic ailment, Richard is the everyman we don't want to glorify even though we see much of ourselves in him. His more conservative wife Joan feels herself trapped in a pit of self-righteous indignation. Together they feed off each other's neuroses until the inevitable occurs. This is not a happy book, but it doesn't have a powerfully tragic feel either. It's almost as though Updike had written these stories about his own failed relationships, from which he'd since moved on, but which still bore a kind of nostalgic, wistful glow. A lovely book, although not a spectacular one, aimed at those who enjoy analyzing relationships, rather than those who expect big things to actually happen.

5 out of 5 stars Another great series from Rabbit's author........2002-01-08

And so there I was, having just finished the latest of the Rabbit series, sad to be leaving a group of people with whom I had spent many entertaining hours, when I came upon this book in the store. Terrific, I thought, another series in which to immerse myself, even if for much less time. I was not disappointed. This is excellent.

In addition to the storytelling, it is interesting in that it gives one a picture of an artist in development. As with the Rabbit series, the writing improves with each story, as the writer matures over a period of years. I highly recommend this collection.

Also of interest: this contains "Gesturing," selected by Updike himself for inclusion in "The Best American Short Stories of the Century."

5 out of 5 stars Rebecca Cune, I love you.......2000-12-13

The Maples story "Snowing in Greenwich Village" is the most erotic short story I've ever read. Now that I've told you that, you'll read it and be disappointed. But what makes me feel this way is what Updike deliberately doesn't say about this one evening in the life of Richard and Joan Maple and their guest, Rebecca Cune. Doesn't say, that is, until the final sentence. And in that sentence, a single omitted comma where anyone else might have inserted one had the effect of nearly taking my breath away. Once you're finished reading, go back and read the first sentence again to see how well it all ties together.

I don't mean to ignore the other stories in this collection. They're all good, and I'll take the Maples as a series over Rabbit's sequels anytime.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars interesting.......2006-08-02

I have several things I would like to say about this book. First and foremost if you love action then this book is definitely for you. However, it seemed more than a little trite. THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE was more like FEAR FACTOR, SURVIVOR, and THE AMAZING RACE with a little JERRY SPRINGER thrown in for good measure. And, was I the only one that noticed Kathryn's last name changed from Williams to Thompson in the middle of the book? That was certainly a newbie-writer flub (and I know Mr. Jacobsen is not a new writer). That SHOULD have been caught by SOMEBODY in the rewrites. Also, the constant head jumping is really annoying. I'm all for different points of view but not jumping from one person to another in the same paragraph for goodness sake! It really throws you out of the story. All in all, it was an interesting book and I would recommend it for those who enjoy fast paced action but if any of the above annoys you you might want to skip this one altogether.

4 out of 5 stars Intense, suspense... WHAMO!!!.......2006-06-09

For Clay Jacobsen, the media is nothing new. I've read all his stuff, and I'm not disappointed. If I had to pick, I'd personally say that "Interview With the Devil" is his best work. Now he's back with a new publisher, along with a new idea, and it still has me sweating just a bit! Clay takes on the Reality Show world, and Clay has spoken. Randy Singer did a similar theme this year in "The Cross Examination of Oliver Finney", and they both deserve attention. This is good stuff!

I can't imagine doing my job, just hammerin' away at whatever I'm doing and having my life possibly change... BOOM!!! (I said possibly, no guarantees, ok?) just like that. But that does happen to Jack Forrest. He tells his varsity football team to hit the showers, they hit the showers all right... and here comes this chopper! "You want the chance for 10 million? Come with us. You have 1 minute to decide." What would you do? To say the least, Jack takes it. Oh, and by the way, his job is on the line as well! OH, who are you taking on? Well come on now! You have a couple of babes, one cocky son-of-a-gun, the strategist, a few others come into play... AND YOU.

Is this really just a game? You are being tested. You are on some strange island, and you don't even know WHERE that stinkin' island is! Huh? What's going on here? This isn't like the other reality shows we've seen. And on top of all that, YOU are the Christian, the one who's supposed to make a difference in a world gone mad. Can you really stand by what you believe? You don't exactly like some of the challenges that are being presented to you, but you press on. With 10 million on the line, you hang in there. Don't worry, you have people praying for you back at home. There were a couple of drawn out places where I myself had to hang in there, and to say the least a little of it was too perfect. When I say that, I give nothing away, although the ending had me feeling just slightly cheated.

So, is this Clay Jacobsen's best? Not in my opinion, because it SCREAMS "Ultimate" and that's what I expect with a title like that. People like Clay Jacobsen deserve a pat on the back! Always giving 110%, despite what the odds are is always worth something to me. That's what keeps me coming back!

4 out of 5 stars Christian Book with Current TV Show Theme.......2006-03-26

he Ultimate Reality Show by Clay Jacobsen is a Christian novel whose plot centers on the hit TV Reality Show whose concept is to fulfill a selfish wish of the Director to meet a woman from his past and to get to know her son whom he has heard lives by his Christian standards. He wishes to put him to the test and devises some amazing events to prove his moral fortitude. The novel is written in an interesting manner and boldly teaches concepts of chastity and honesty and living uprightly even when you don't think you're being watched and even against great odds and temptations. The central figures go through many trials and have a happy ending with an unexpected twist. An enjoyable read and a good book for teens also.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2006-02-23

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Most of the time in books and movies, Christian characters, or characters of moral standing and fortitude, seem dull and one dimensional. Not so with this book. I could fully relate to Jack's predicament and never once did he seem weak, boring, or "religious."

Using a fictional game show as a plot device was brilliant and allowed the characters to face all kinds of bizarre and sticky situations without it seeming contrived. There were many plot twists. Some I saw a mile away and others that caught me completely off guard. Again, this was very well done. If you like reality shows such as Survivor or Biggest Loser, then you will love this book. If you think these shows are interesting, but ultimately a waist of time, you'll love this book. Where typical game shows are shallow and pointless, this book has depth and meaning that those other shows lack.

My only problem now with this book is who to loan it to first. I get to share this wonderful gem with many of my friends and family. Sometimes that's the best part of reading a great book.

One last thing: When does the movie come out? Surely someone must be looking at this book as a script for a movie. It'd be awesome!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Reality Show is an undisputed winner!.......2006-02-21

Jack Forrest didn't count the cost when he decides to compete for a ten million-dollar prize. Author Clay Jacobsen gives readers a glimpse into an ultimate reality game show that in the end deals with eternity. In this well-written novel, opposing forces set up camp. On one side are the ordinary lives of Jack and his fellow contestants. Across the way is the lure of a huge amount of money that could make those ordinary lives extraordinary. The only catch is that to win the game, the players must dodge danger, deceit, and a bit of deviltry. And the only rule is that there are no rules.

Jack Forrest is a committed Christian and he brings an entirely new slant to the challenge. It is inspiring to see how he smoothly revealed his worldview through his actions and dialogue. His wit and wisdom make him stand out in the crowd, but readers will have to wait until the last page to see if he wins the jackpot!

Operating on a parallel line to the story is the personal life of Jack and his mother. Their steadfast faith in God is tested when a secret from the past threatens their future. This bit of mystery is smoothly incorporated into the main plot to give it an additional layer of interest.

These pages offer plenty of action with a strong emotional appeal. The lure of a grand prize is cleverly contrasted with the most important things in a person's life. The excitement of the game show steadily builds until the final pages when the true victory is revealed. The Ultimate Reality Show is an undisputed winner! -- Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com
