4 out of 5 stars recommend for siblings of children with autism.......2007-04-06

I also read this book with my daughter. I found it really helpful for the both of us. Some of the suggestions she has taken to heart and has started to practice them with her brother who is high function autisic.

I would reccemond this to anybody who has other children that needs to uderstand about what autism is and can learn about different ways to do things

5 out of 5 stars Good for kids and adults.......2007-03-22

I bought it for my granddaughter who has an autistic brother. I found it useful for myself, because it is not full of psychobabble.

4 out of 5 stars Everybody is different: A book for young people who have brothers or sisters with Autism.......2007-02-13

This book is quite good and explains quite easily to older children, the concept and behaviours of Autism. I think it was a little over the understanding of my 8 year old, but my 12 year old could quite easily gain a better understanding. It would be helpful to read it with your children so you canvdiscuss any siblings concerns, and troubleshooting methods for if you happen to be unavailable.

5 out of 5 stars All for Matthew-.......2007-01-12

My daugher is only 4yrs old so I had to read the book first and water it down. I was surprised by how much she already new about her 6yr. old brother. She said when she grew up she would help me take care of Matthew by giving him a drink, tucking him in bed and singing him a lulaby. She already does alot of talking for him when they meet people.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids.......2006-06-27

My granddaughter loved the explanations about autism in this book. She is 9, and it is written where she can understand more about the behaviors of her brother with autism. She was even going to take it to school for her teacher to read, and some of her classmates. Many adults would benefit from reading it also.

Tite Kubo, Bleach: The Deathberry Returns (ViZ, 2001)

Finally, everything comes to a head. Rukia's execution is at hand, and while Ichigo has healed somewhat, he's nowhere near full power, but there's no one else left to save her. Is there any hope left? Another fine installment in an excellent series. ****

4 out of 5 stars The breaking point.......2007-05-22

The moment is at hand. This series just keeps upping the ante. Rukia is about to be executed, Ichigo is still mastering Bankai. Renji is in all out combat with Byakuya, soul reapers and hacking each other up left and right and this is just the beginning of the volume! On top of this we still don't know why Captain Aizen was really killed or what Captain Ichimaru is up to. By the end of this volume there will be even more intense combat. The ridiculously powerful Ichigo will appear and the Captain-General will enter the fight to put the fear of god in anyone who stands in his way. The Soul Society is completely split in half as what can best be described as civil war breaks out! Whew!

5 out of 5 stars Argh the suspense.......2007-05-13

this is a great series. In this book you get the idea that there is something more to what is actually happening...something behind the scenes. You get a glimpse but you are not quite sure, it's right around the corner

I really loved volume 2, in volume 2 they reveal more about chad and add two new characters, one named Kon which is a pretty funny guy and the other named Hat and Clogs, which I guess you could say he's a soul reaper seller. (and volume 2 as a lot of action which I loved)

4 out of 5 stars Series starts showing its potential........2007-02-28

Tite Kubo, Bleach: Goodbye Parakeet, Goodnight My Sister (Viz, 2001)

Strawberry and Rukia are back in Goodbye Parakeet, Goodnight My Sister. Strawberry's school chum Chad stumbles into Strawberry's father's clinic sporting a mysterious scar on his back, then just as mysteriously disappears. Strawberry and Rukia suspect that Chad's being tailed by a Hollow, an evil spirit tied to the human world until it's dispatched by a soul reaper. But is this Hollow too much for Strawberry to handle alone?

For the second volume, Kubo can do less introducing of characters and more character-building. As the cover of the first one suggested he'd be concentrating on Strawberry, this one suggests he'll concentrate on Rukia, and we are not disappointed. She's quite the charmer, she is, and adding Chad to the mix pretty much guarantees some fireworks between Strawberry and Chad down the line. This is very good stuff. Recommended. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars I like where this is going.............2006-11-26

I just started reading Bleach 3 days ago, and I finished this one today. I have never read manga before, but I love Bleach so much that I will be trying some others, too. This 2nd addition in the series is very exciting and leaves you satisfied. The cliffhanger wasn't as good as the first, but I will still be checking out 3 and up!

5 out of 5 stars Good Start, I Think Part 2.......2006-05-26

Alright, now I see what everyone is talking about. For those of you who may have read my review for the first volume, you know that I was skeptical of the start that Bleach had. I had felt that it wasn't enough to truly be rated as of yet, and thought that the story wasn't exactly the most original ever created. I also wanted a better glimpse of the main character, Ichigo, which the first volume failed to provide. But after reading this second volume, I definitely understand.

This is, simply, an exciting manga to read. The characters, the story, almost everything about this series isn't original, but it's a damn lot of fun. In fact, it's so fun that I think Bleach is doing a kind of reinvention of sorts by enlivening the manga ghost/action story (YuYu Hakusho, Shaman King). And, while this volume doesn't take many more steps than the first did, it definitely made it clear that those steps would eventually pop up somewhere. For now, you just have to enjoy the action and the comedy while meeting some possibly interesting people along the way.

After finishing this volume, which basically explored Ichigo's continued training as a substitute Soul Reaper, I'm actually sorry I gave the first volume a four. It deserved a five and I can't go back now and change that. This is an excellent manga series that promises to only get better. It can appeal to all ages, having more than enough to keep adult manga readers entertained while also not being graphic enough to make it too mature for kids. I highly recommend this manga to fans of Shonen Jump, as the similarities are too many to count.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Series.......2005-10-04

Bleach was my very first introduction into Japanese Manga, after reading a preview of it in Shohen Jump. Since then, I've downloaded translations of TV shows like Naruto and even Bleach, but the manga volumes have always remained my favorites. If you want an introduction in this kind of stuff. From there, you can download and watch episodes from Naruto and Bleach, and even gives a link to a cool Bleach fan club! This is my favorite series ever, and I thought it would be neat if I could lead the way for other followers of the series.

Tite Kubo, Bleach: The Death Trilogy Overture (ViZ, 2002)

The sixth volume of Tite Kubo's much-acclaimed Bleach continues the battle between Uryu and Ichigo, and more importantly, the battle between both of them and the myriad of hollows who've descended upon the city. The problem is, Uryu's hollow-bait has attracted enough hollows that a critical mass is about to be reached...

I'm quite fond of this series, and recommend it highly. My only real problem with The Death Trilogy Overture is that I saw the ending coming a mile away. Still, after six volumes, Bleach is still going strong. Great stuff. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars A Manga That Caters For All!.......2005-08-13

First off 'Bleach' is a great manga - one of the best i've read and that's saying something, because between me and my best friend we have quite the bundle of graphic novels!

Seeing as this is volume six, anyone looking to buy it must already be hooked on Tite Kubo's amazing creation, but those of you who are just not sure then please read on and i'll try my best to convince you that this manga is the right choice.

'Bleach' is the story of Ichigo Kurosaki, a fifteen year old 'delinquent' with bright orange hair and a bit of an attitude. Ichigo can also see ghosts which is one of the things that sets 'Bleach' apart from most manga. He lives a fairly boring life until Rukia Kuchiki, a soul reaper, turns it all upside-down! Her job is to hunt down Hollows (spirits unable to move on to the next world for some reason or other) and bring them back to the soul society. Events transpire and Ichigo ends up taking all of Rukia's spirit energy in an attempt to save his family, leaving Rukia stranded in Japan with no means of getting back to her home. Ichigo must now become a substitute soul reaper while Rukia regains her powers.

Volume six continues the deadly contest between Ichigo and Uryu but the Hollows just keep coming and to make things worse there's a bigger, meaner Hollow on it's way by the name of Menos Grande! Orihime and Chad have to make some big desisions and it looks like times up for Rukia!

One of the things i loved about 'Bleach' was the illustrations. They are so distinctive and easy to look at - no squinting to make out someone's face, which is always a good thing!

The characters are all very entertaining (there's the big-boobed and ditzy Orihime, the VERY open lesbian, Chizuru, the serious Uryu, the spunky Karin and a whole lot more) each with their own distinctive personalities and quirks - there's a 'Bleach' character for everyone! The comedy ranges from slapstick to adult humour with everything in between and you are guarenteed to laugh out loud - some of the jokes are just priceless!

There's a whole lot of action, a whole lot of comedy, even a dash of romance for the ladies! I suppose what i'm saying is this manga has something for everybody.

If you're still not convinced then just ponder on this; You wont know untill you try it!

Hope this helped,
Sarah.

Tite Kubo, Bleach: Memories in the Rain (Viz, 2002)

Memories in the Rain shows why Bleach is such a well-loved and long-running series. Kubo completely shifts gears here and pulls it off with aplomb. While there's still a good deal of action to be found, the core of this volume is Ichigo at his mother's graveside, contemplating her death and his part in it. Kubo does reflective as easily as he does action, and there's some real emotion to be found in these pages. Strongest volume in the series so far. ****

4 out of 5 stars Ichigo Remembers Mommy... And Fights Her?.......2006-07-10

This volume of Bleach follows Ichigo as he remembers his mother and the circumstances behind her death. Eventually, a hollow shows up to wreck Ichigo's day of mourning, yet this hollow seems to have a direct connection to Ichigo's mother's death, and this is one connection Ichigo can't forgive. Along the way, we are introduced to Kon, the teddy bear body of the mod soul introduced in the previous volume. And Orihime and Tatsuki, Ichigo's classmates, discuss the events surrounding Ichigo's mother's death.

Most of this volume is back story and the fighting of the same creature, so it lost a little of the speed that was introduced in the first volume. But this was one of those inevitable slow-downs, as the events in this volume are important in making the characters more lovable, especially Ichigo. Seeing him as a cry-baby youngster and seeing the change that happened because of his mother's death really solidifies his tough-guy attitude, which is really a defense mechanism to keep people away from him and out of danger. This will become obvious to you once you read this volume (and I assure you, this isn't a spoiler as none of this is mentioned).

Still, even though this volume slowed a bit I still have to recommend it, mainly because of the ending cliff-hanger, as it appears to introduce a true antagonistic force. Plus, the art is still the same and comedy, when it's there, is enough to smile at, even if most of it is unoriginal.

4 out of 5 stars Back to the action........2007-03-13

Tite Kubo, Bleach: Quincy Archer Hates You (ViZ, 2001)

I spent the first hundred ninety-eight pages of the fourth volume of Bleach wondering who on Earth Quincy Archer was, then found out I'd been taken for quite a ride. I'm not sure if it's a spoiler to say why, so I'll omit it for the moment. (I'm sure I'll get 'round to it in my review for Book 5, so be on the lookout.) In any case, the title character doesn't make anything more than peripheral appearances until the last chapter, so it's not worth worrying about the title when you dive into this.

The meditative atmosphere of the third book recedes into the background, and we get back to heavy action. The big sensation on Japanese TV these days is Don Kanonji, an exorcist who travels to various haunted locations and gets rid of ghosts. This week, he's headed for Karakura-- in fact, an abandoned hospital near Ichigo's neighborhood. Ichigo and Rukia quickly find out that the hospital is, in fact, haunted, and that Kanonji's meddling may end up making things worse.

Quincy Archer Hates You gives us the welcome return of Chad, though he's a spectator for much of the book, and introduces a subplot regarding Rukia's pager (how she and Ichigo find out about hollows that need destroyed) being on the fritz, but this book concentrates more than the others in the series to date on its main story, which is action- and humor-packed enough for Bleach fans one and all. Good stuff. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars Quincy Acher Hates Ichigo.......2006-11-04

The whole story is about the Quincy history and the last remaining quincy who hates the main character and goes on a showdown with him trying to defeat as many Hollows as they can. But it also has stories of Orihime and Chad and how they get their power, but only part of the story.

4 out of 5 stars In which we get to know Chad. Hurrah!.......2007-04-13

Tite Kubo, Bleach: Right Arm of the Giant (ViZ, 2002)

In which we discover that Ichigo is not the only member of this loosely-allied group that has superpowers. As the cover of the book lets you know in no uncertain terms, the enigmatic Chad, who was previously seen as someone who had no supernatural abilities whatsoever (remember how he had to be told where to punch in his first battle with a hollow?), may actually be far more important to everyone's safety than we thought. Meanwhile, Uryu challenges Ichigo to a test to see which group, the Quincies or the Soul Reapers, is more efficient at dispatching hollows. Ichigo accepts, with dire consequences (but sets up a multi-book story arc, so there you go). Chad's my favorite character in the series, so I loved this; I can see why some folks who have given it not-so-good reviews might not think there's enough going on in this one, though. ****

5 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorites!.......2006-10-16

For those who have not read this series yet, I HIGHLY recommend it! And as for those people out there who have read this volume and have trash talked it, that is your opinion, but I disagree thoroughly. Yes, the hollows can be odd but I still love them, and yes Orihime's fairies are out there, but they are just too awsome not to love. Once again, I highly recommend this series to anyone who has seen the anime and want better, or those who are looking for more spiritual awsomeness with lovable characters!

2 out of 5 stars ICHIGO'S PALS FIND POWER.......2006-02-27

In Volume 5 of Bleach we learn that Soul Reapers are not the only sect that dispatches Hollows. A branch of them, called "Quincies", also hunt Hollows, the difference being that instead of purifying them so they can go on to the Soul Society, they out and out KILL the demonic spirits. The last Quincy was thought to have died around 200 years ago, but Uryu Ishida, a classmate of Ichigo's, claims he is one of the clan and challenges Ichigo the Soul Reaper in a contest meant to prove Quincy superiority. He spreads bait over the entire city to attract Hollows, uncaring of the innocents that will be hurt. Whoever can kill the most Hollows wins! Ichigo probably won't be able to protect all the people he cares for, but he might have to, because his friend's own psychic powers just might awaken.

The latter half of this volume began an abrupt decline in quality. The shakiest thing about this series is the unimaginative and sometimes outright laughable design of the Hollows. Just to give one instance, when Orihime and her pals are attacked by a Hollow, it looks like one of those cut octopus looking frankfurters you see in Japanese lunches. Then the obviously pathetic Hollow says "I don't like to fight...so I fire seeds from my forehead". You feel as if the Power Rangers are going to fly in any second to fight giant guys in rubber suits! And wait till you see Orihime's power, which involves gnat sized fairies. Oh, the horror of it all. I don't know if I'm going to go beyond the next volume if this keeps up.

5 out of 5 stars by far one of my favorite manga.......2005-04-08

i'm 17 and my manga collection is around the 40 something books mark. so i know what i'm talking about. this not only has some of the best and most unique artwork, but it's funny. there are even some parts that i laughed out loud at. it has some of the best action sequences, and dialogue i've read. definitely one of the best manga series' i've read. i suggest buying this. and just when you think it can't get any cooler, then volume 5 comes around. i can't tell you much because it's integral to the plot, but it will probably blow you away. i like this series a lot, i would suggest it to pretty much everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!.......2005-03-16

My first impression on BLEACH was not good, after watching some episodes of it's anime version...up to episode#18(translated in english subtitles),I've change my mind and bought volume#1 at once! After reading the first volume#1...I saw differences from the manga and the anime, but that won't Stop me for being Fanatic fan of Bleach!!!This sure heck of a Series!!!!I love the couple Ichigo and Rukia!!!I want to see more. Now I got volume#1 of the manga now I should get the others,I'm already late...but there's a saying..."Slow but sure!".

Book Description

Ever since he was little, Ichigo Kurosaki has been able to see the spirits of the dead, so when a teenage girl materializes through his bedroom wall, this should be no call for alarm. Rukia Kuchiki is a shinigami, a member of the mysterious Soul Society that is charged with capturing rogue ghosts, and is hot on the trail of an evil spirit. But in the ensuing confrontation, Ichigo absorbs Rukia's powers, giving him the ability to not only see the undead, but to fight them as well. Now this 15-year-old high school student begins a brand new vocation: hyperkinetic, all-purpose ghost-busting. With enough attitude to make a grown ghost blush, Ichigo and crew are taking on the after-life one ghoulie at time.

4 out of 5 stars The best since Memories in the Rain........2007-07-10

Tite Kubo, Bleach: Night of Wijnruit (ViZ, 2001)

Wow. Kubo reprises the best volume in the series Memories in the Rain, this time to tell us the real story behind Rukia's involvement with the death of Kaien Shiba. While it sounds like a rather silly conceit (and, really, how often is a sequel as good as the original?), it works here. In doing so, it gives us a great deal of insight into some of the more mysterious parts of Rukia's character (read: why she's never wanted to be saved). Now, if only Ichigo can figure it out... ****

My teen loved this book and completed it in one afternoon. It's also a great read over.

4 out of 5 stars manga review.......2007-02-16

In this 16th volume of Bleach Tite Kubo finally treats us to the story of Rukia's past in which she claims to have killed Ganju's older brother Kaein. It's a rather tragic story for which I feel she's being to over dramatic. True he did die at her hands but is she really to blame? Also the similarities between Kaein and Ichigo dont just stop at their appearances, which Captain Ukitake cant be blamed for thinking the two of them somehow connected, the two guys also have similar behaviors that Rukia seems to be drawn to. Also in this volume we finally find out what was in Captain Aizen's letter to his adjutant. It's a rather shocking revelation that leaves your head spinning as to who is telling the truth and who on earth is lying. I mean do the dead tell lies or what? And no big shocker Rukia's execution date is moved yet again though she doesnt seem to be to bothered by it having already accepted her fate. Though for the most part the volume has a rather serious and suspenseful tone it also has that lovable humor that makes the series so great, mainly due to Kenpachi and crew looking for Ichigo. Yachiru is truly adorable in my opinion. She doesnt know the difference between left and right but Kenpachi is always listening to her for some crazy reason. All in all it's a good vloume. If you're a fan of the series you wont be dissapointed at all since there are a few things that are revealed that had been left as loose ends in previous volumes plus it ends on a wicked cliffhanger. My only complaint is that there was no Radio-Kon. I sure do love those things.

4 out of 5 stars Volume 16: More of the same, though still a good read........2007-01-26

I'm going to spare the hardcore details here and get right down to business.

Ichigo is training with Yoruichi in an attempt to master a powerful technique crucial in defeating Byakuya and saving Rukia.

Chad, Uryu, Ganju are still in locked up within the Soul Society, while Orihime's whereabouts are unknown.

The Soul Society is still on high alert while tensions between Gin Ichimaru and Captain of 10th Company increase.

While I didn't feel there was any real "filler" here it does continue to move at a rather slow pace. (Much like Volume 15). It still has all of the trademark comedy and even moving slow we still learn a number of new things.

The ending leads me to believe 17 will not wrap this story arc up, but if you're a Bleach fan at this point in the series you'll know what to expect.

The series overall is highly recommended(it's what got me into manga initially) and even giving the pacing manages to deliver, albeit rather grudgingly.

Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a shinigami and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family, but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged shinigami himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits, and along with Rukia, who is slowly regaining her powers, it's Ichigo's job to both protect the innocent from Hollows and to help the spirits themselves find peace.

I'm 27 years old and my hubby is 34 and we're proud to say Bleach is our new obsession...it's appropriate for pretty much all ages, witty, and highly addictive, even for folks who aren't comic book people.

This is one of the best books I have ever read, the art is great and the story grabs you and doesn't let go, Ichigo Kurosaki/strawberry kicks butt (I love his Dad)! If you love manga, you'll love BLEACH!

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Entertaining.......2007-04-12

I'm not an avid manga reader or anime watcher. However, after catching an episode of Bleach on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, I was hooked!

I decided to see what the roots of the TV show was like and checked out the first volume of Bleach, the manga. I was shocked at how closely the show followed this novel. It is a storyboard for everything that happens in the anime, right down to the sometimes-hilarious facial expressions and situations. The tried and true statement of 'the book is always better' holds up here; small details in the manga don't often make it on the air.

The art is very well done and I appreciated being able to read it in the right-to-left manner intended by its author. Another plus to reading the manga is that you can see the full range of sketches that inspire the 'Death God - Picture Book' short that is found at the end of many of the episodes in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing beginning........2007-02-28

Tite Kubo, Bleach: Strawberry and the Soul Reapers (Viz, 2001)

Tite Kubo opens the popular (and, seemingly, never-ending) Bleach with Strawberry and the Soul Reapers. Ichigo "Strawberry" Kurosaki, a high-school student proficient in the martial arts, has a seemingly-chance encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a soul reaper (a ghost sent from the Lord of the Dead to collect the souls of the recently, or soon-to-be, deceased). Through a rather convoluted series of events, Strawberry ends up absorbing a good deal of Rukia's power, and must take on the soul reaper's job while Rukia regains her strength in the human world. A fun beginning. *** ½
