Book Description

This coherent presentation of clinical judgement, caring practices and collaborative practice provides ideas and images that readers can draw upon in their interactions with others and in their interpretation of what nurses do. It includes many clear, colorful examples and describes the five stages of skill acquisition, the nature of clinical judgement and experiential learning and the seven major domains of nursing practice. The narrative method captures content and contextual issues that are often missed by formal models of nursing knowledge. The book uncovers the knowledge embedded in clinical nursing practice and provides the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition applied to nursing, an interpretive approach to identifying and describing clinical knowledge, nursing functions, effective management, research and clinical practice, career development and education, plus practical applications. For nurses and healthcare professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all RN's.......2007-08-21

This book should be required reading for all nurses in all nursing programs. It is an unspoken nursing student idea that when you graduate from your nursing program that you should, "know it all." This is unrealistic for the new/novice nurse. This book explains the process and gives comfort the the new nurse that expecting you to "know it all" is unreasonable and is not an expectation of the profession.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible Nursing Research.......2007-07-12

Patricia Benner started taking a common-sense approach to nursing research, when everyone else was out there in the clouds. She actually did something no one else was doing at the time- she asked nurses what they thought, and observed real working nurses to describe her learning model. She aptly describes how nurses learn at the bedside, and why they make the decisions they do, based on what stage of learning they're in. I recommend this book for new and experienced nurses, preceptors, and nurse educators. A must-read for anyone in the profession.

5 out of 5 stars From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice.......2007-03-20

The textbook was received in perfect condition and in a timely manner.

4 out of 5 stars great for any nurse!.......2007-02-18

this book is excellent for any nurse who wants to understand Patricia Benner's theory on how we learn and develop our skills as nurses caring for others needs moving from the task oriented to seeing the big picture of care.

5 out of 5 stars powerful.......2007-01-03

Timeless since it was published 25 years ago, Benner's book offers a realistic and thoughtful model of nursing practice which addresses many challenges that are just as pertinent today. The exemplars are classic illustrations of what makes nursing so important yet difficult to define, and most importantly that the differences in nursing practice are placed in the context of experience- which offers nursing leaders important insight into our own strategies. A "must-have"resource for managers and an "I wish I knew these things when I started" textbook for the classroom. Has a permanent place on the night stand.

From the Back Cover

Interested in becoming a master of the PHP language and MySQL database but don't know where to begin? This best-selling book ranks among the most thorough and practical guides in print, covering all of the key concepts and features, and showing you how to effectively integrate PHP and MySQL to build powerful web sites.

The book begins with a vast overview of PHP's capabilities, starting with a survey of the installation and configuration process on both the Windows and Linux platforms. Next, several chapters are devoted to basic PHP concepts, including variables, datatypes, arrays, functions, string manipulation, and processing user input. Other key PHP topics are also covered, including PEAR, session handling, LDAP integration, the Smarty templating engine, Web services, and PDO.

Next up is a presentation of MySQL's key features. You're first guided through MySQL's installation and configuration process, and are presented with an introduction to its storage engines, datatypes, administration utilities, security features, and data import/export facilities. New MySQL 5--specific chapters have been added in this edition, covering triggers, stored procedures, and views. Along the way, you'll gain insight into PHP's assortment of MySQL functions (using both the mysql and mysqli extensions), and learn how to create and execute queries, perform searches, and carry out key database tasks from within your Web application.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Definitely not for begginers.......2007-10-02

I never got around to finishing this book because halfway through it I noticed I had not even written a single line of code. The author does not propose any excercises for you to try out what your learned through the book. All he does is list all the functions available in PHP but no examples on how to use them.
I can see this book being useful as a reference after you have programmed PHP for a while, but for beginners that want to get started in PHP for the very firt time I would not recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Far too many typos, syntax errors, and gaps in explinations.......2007-09-15

I bought this book on recommendation. I have a background in programming, and I just needed a book to cement together all the concepts I had picked up in developing PHP apps. Less then 2 chapters in the errors became so frequent in the code that the author no longer holds my confidence. Its hard to be confident of his explanation if it lacks the care to make sure its correct.

The writing and explanations, though following a clear format, are at times wildly inconstant in explaining the parts of various functions. Do not recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Full of value.......2007-08-07

I haven't programmed in almost 10 years, but wanted to jump into PHP and MySQL generated web content. I was able to pick and chose throughout this book to bring myself up to speed and have a functional website in a matter of 2 weeks. I was easily able to adapt examples in the book to fit my needs.

This book was really worth the money. I will be referencing to it for a long time to come.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for all.......2007-07-06

I am a semi-experienced programmer, majoring in CS and currently in my third year. I needed to buy a book to learn PHP for a job and originally went for O'Reilley's _Learning PHP and MySQL_. I quickly realized that was a bad choice, however, because it was way too simple and short and didn't really cover SQL at all. Even as a reference book it just did not suffice compared to Gilmore's _PHP5 and MySQL_ which I borrowed from a friend. PHP and MySQL is covered in great depth, and a thorough index makes this nearly-exhaustive text a great reference book.

**This is likely not a book for someone who has never programmed before** as it uses typical programming language terminology without previous definition. Still, abundant examples and side notes allows anyone with reasonable programming experience to breeze through the book. Reading this cover-to-cover would definitely not be the correct approach, but skimming over the chapters and getting acquainted with the PHP language is something this book makes easy to do when you can simply slow down and go over the examples when you feel you need to, or quickly reach the next section thanks to good organization and text formatting.

If you are looking for a reference book for PHP and MySQL just short of a bible, this is definitely for you. But if you are a complete novice to programming, you would probably be better off coming back to this later or buying it on the side for once you have more experience.

5 out of 5 stars Great starter guide.......2007-06-22

this guide speaks in laymens terms and teached using simple examples. I would recomend this book for grandmothers and professional web admins collections

4 out of 5 stars Great primer for anyone going into the business.......2007-09-13

Wanting to get started in Real Estate, hate the idea of cold calling!!!

This is a soup to nuts primer on how to get started and keep going. Well worth the $$ and time invested!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best beginner real estate book written.......2007-05-20

As a broker, I'm always looking for new material for training my agents. This is the BEST book I've found for new real estate agents in the industry. Being a realtor is not easy, this book helps answer a lot of the questions that a new agent has. I would recommend reading this book BEFORE you decide to become an agent as it may help you with that decision. I would also recommend to read for anyone that is just startig or perhaps has been in a while but not quite making the amount of money or sales that they are happy with.

    1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2007-04-15

I thought this book was a waste of money. It was too simple, suggestions were not worth paying for. I sold it on ebay. It wasn't worth returning it to Amazon, and losing money because of the shipping.

    4 out of 5 stars A good beginning start.......2007-01-28

This is a good beginning start for a 'new' real estate agent. It provides a stepping stone of information and gives perspectives of what you could do in the beginning of your career. Be mindful that you are working for commission and customers is your number one goal. Having customers, being able to network and create leads are three primary necessities. Please note the strategies here are not at all canon. In other words, you need to re-adjust strategies based on your location and your situation. For instance, in one part of the book, it tells you to go with a large brokerage to get your feet wet, but that may not help if you're looking for a mentor, as many large brokerages, especially commercial ones, do not have the time nor are they interested in raising another competitor.

Overall the book is solid, in that it provides a stepping stone.

2 out of 5 stars After one year in the industry, I found the book was misleading........2006-12-17

After one year in the real estate industry, I needed to clean my book shelf. This book was thrown into the box marked "useless".
    Let me tell you why.

The first time I bought and read it, I had no real working experience and thought I got great information about industry. Thus I thought I was ahead of other newbies. I read this book so many times, underlined, and dog eared.
Looking back, the only thing this book was right is "average income is very low".
For the rest, unfortunately, I found this book actually mislead me too much and lead me to costly mistakes.

One example. The author suggested that office located in busy street is better for newbies. I found this was not true. I worked with 3 offices.

The other example is that the author suggested that bigger office is better for newbies. I found this is absolutely not true. The reality is it's much better to start with small office where you can easily find mentor. In reality, in large offices, competition among salespersons are high to the level that no one cares about helping newbies. Get the fact. Everyone is working on commission. They don't even wast time to go lunch with you!!! And here's the facts. This business of real estate sales is not really intellectual, not even to the level of professional. It's all about how much people you know and how much people know you. This is rather a business of convenience. Every other salesperson even in the same office is a potential enemy for your business!!! Why they help and teach you to suceed. It only reduces their chance of making listings and sales!!!

Once I realized this, after actually working in industry, I knew this book was useless and never refered to this book for anything.

One and a half year after I actaully got into the industry, I found the very useful book. If you are about to be a real estate salesperson, read "How to suceed in commercial real estate" by John L. Bowman. I know this is for commercial real estate. But this book is WAY BETTER than "Your First Year in Real Estate".

Don't make costly maistakes by reading "Your First Year in Real Estate". 80-90% newbies fail in first 3 months. Reading wrong books can be fatal for your career.

    Book Description

Ajax breathes new life into web applications by transparently communicating and manipulating data in conjunction with a server-based technology. Of all the server-based technologies capable of working in conjunction with Ajax, perhaps none are more suitable than PHP, the world's most popular scripting language.

Beginning Ajax with PHP: From Novice to Professional is the first book to introduce how these two popular technologies can work together to create next-generation applications. Author Lee Babin covers what you commonly encounter in daily web application development tasks, and shows you how to build PHP/AJAX-enabled solutions for forms validation, file upload monitoring, database-driven information display and manipulation, web services, Google Maps integration, and more. You'll learn how to

You'll also be introduced to other key topics like conquering cross-platform issues, countering potential security holes, and testing and debugging JavaScript with efficiency. All examples are based on real-world scenarios, so you'll be able to apply what you learn to your own development situations.

1 out of 5 stars Error filled piece of @#$@#.......2007-06-17

Were the editors asleep when they put this out? A couple other people commented on the errors, but still gave it a 3 star rating. They were being kind. You can't learn anything when the examples are so completely riddled with errors. Others commented on the use of the deprecated innerHTML. For $35 I expect better from an author and his publisher. This one is being returned.

3 out of 5 stars Too many errors in code.......2007-05-08

I was excited about this book until I realized how many errors there are in the source code! It makes it very impractical to work with, too bad!!

3 out of 5 stars Stephen Rider's Review is Dead On..........2007-04-20

Wish I'd read the reviews more carefully before buying this book. Stephen Rider's criticisms are exactly right. I was particularly disappointed with excessive use of the innerHTML object. It's been deprecated and should not have been included in a book published in 2007. The long code examples are as Stephen says, too. At the very least, some way of highlighting the difference or addition in them to bring it to the reader's attention would have been better. I read "Head Rush Ajax" before this, and it does a much better job overall of teaching the right way to code Ajax--I was just hoping for a book with more PHP-specific coding in conjunction with Ajax.

3 out of 5 stars Good intro, but many errors and poor explanations.......2007-04-11

The author gives a good intro to Ajax and PHP combined. Gives you a good understanding of what those two are able to do together.
Sadly this get ruined by a lot of mistakes in the sample code provided, one example being an SQL phrase that actually will make the script not work. Also he dump several pages of code right in your face, but fails at explaining properly what's going on, leaving you with the feeling he might have "borrowed" the code from somewhere and not really knowing himself what it does.

3 out of 5 stars Decent introduction to Ajax, but flawed execution.......2007-02-23

This book is pretty polished and gives a lot of information, but I found it flawed in a few rather bothersome ways....

First off, the author glosses over a lot of things that are generally considered "best practices" when it comes to using HTML -- for example, web page examples are often cluttered with "style" attributes applied to multiple tags, when this sort of thing should really be dealt with using a stylesheet (reducing the amount of typing and *greatly* increasing the readability of the examples!) If there is a particular reason why he doesn't do this, he should tell us, and he doesn't.

Second is the frequent use of innerHTML, which is nonstandard JavaScript -- I would be far more confident that he's truly teaching me the best way to use Ajax if he were more clearly demonstrating knowledge of best practices for HTML and CSS.

The other thing that made this book cumbersome in places was that in giving an example script, he'll dump four or more pages of solid code in your lap, and then say "Okay, here's what I did...", which leaves you flipping back and forth trying to follow what he's saying about code that's several pages back. I've had a much easier time with other books that explain as they go: give a chunk of code, and if there's something that warrants explanation, do it right away and *then* proceed with more code.

It's a decent book in terms of information, but a harder slog than it could (or should) have been.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Purchase.......2007-08-10

Book is a "second edition" that needs significant editing. References on the pages are not consistent with the text; screenshots use more than one computer so there is no consistency to assist the reader. The supplied DVD for Ubuntu 6.10 would not load so I had to download a copy for myself. If you're interested in Ubuntu, the Forums and online assistance are better resources. Book was returned to Amazon with essentially this same evaluation. They DID credit me for the return.

4 out of 5 stars Content plus readability, AHHH!.......2007-07-31

Found this book to be immediately useful. Am a "newbie" to Ubuntu Linux and need all the help I can get. The book came through. It did it in less than 700 pages and there was sufficient ink on the pages. Easier to handle than the 900 page behemoth, Thank you, Apress.

5 out of 5 stars definitive guide for ubuntu linux.......2007-07-25

This book is the definitive guide for Ubuntu linux. A great manual that guides the user from installation to usage and development with simple and unambiguous language. It includes some very helpful figures.

There are special chapters on the Bash shell and command line editors as well as less traditional topics like managing multimedia and images. Even though I am running a newer version of Ubuntu (7.04) rather than the one described in the book (6.10), I have found very few differences. A book that is strongly recommended, especially to beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Easy read, old info.......2007-07-18

This book is a great read. I found it warn and friendly. If you are new to Ubuntu and do not like tech books, this is for you. One thing though, it was out dated when I got it new. Ubuntu comes out every 6 months, so this book will always be behind unless the author starts using the beta to write the book, which would be the best idea. I would also have liked to see more on Kubunu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu as well. They are all part of the official Ubuntu family and one may have worked better of me as a reader.

5 out of 5 stars Explaining Linux Ubuntu.......2007-07-16

This is a very comprehensive book about Ubuntu. It is especially informative if you are a beginner at using Linux. This book doesn't cover the latest Ubuntu release but the principles are the same. Highly recommended.

A good guide if you are new to google maps. If you are an experienced google maps developer trying to integrate RJS or other cool rails techniques, this book is not very useful. I'm coding rails and google maps applications daily and I haven't picked this book up more than twice since receiving it.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-15

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in using Google Maps with Ruby on Rails. My expectations were exceeded and I believe it lives up to its sub-title "From Novice to Professional".

I develop Rails applications and became interested in Google Maps in conjunction with a Real Estate application I was working on. In particular, I was interested using Google Maps for visual analysis of large data sets. Knowing next to nothing about the Google Maps API, I was truly at the Novice level. The book started off at the basics and quickly built on example and technique to the point where there was a working example of a problem similar in scope to mine. Along the way, the trade offs and techniques were well presented and explained in detail. Not only did I gain the knowledge and confidence to tackle my particular problem, but I was also inspired by all the other potential applications of this exciting new technology.

This book was well organized and written. I was obvious that the authors had worked through the examples and I especially appreciated many of the best practices and hints they gave. Chapter 7 "Optimizing and Scaling for Large Data Sets" was particularly interesting for me and my application. It included code and examples for several server-side and client-side techniques and as well as a clear explanation of their uses and trade offs.

If you are a Rails coder and you want to master Google Maps, this is a must have book

5 out of 5 stars Building Google Maps application in Rails, get this book.......2007-05-01

I was worried when I ordered this book that it would just be a reference book of the Google Maps API, but thankfully I was wrong. This book is an excellent reference to anyone wanting to build a Google Maps enabled Rails Application.

The first four chapters take you through building an application, similar to the author's hotspotr application where a user can save Wifi hotspot information. For many people this may be all they are looking for, a way to create maps, save information and geocode addresses.

Chapters 5-8 deal with larger datasets and the example they use is from the FCC Antenna Structure Registration, which has 120k records already geocoded for you. It then takes you through different presentation methods. If you want to see the output, go to book dot earthcode dot com chapter seven, server custom tiles. It's a very impressive result, similar to the pictures of earth at night.

The rest of the book gives other advanced uses and apis, I have not read all the way through that but it looks interesting. The other thing I like about the tone of the book is the conversational style. For example in Chapter 5 where they are using the FCC dataset they talk about the advantages of using a mysql import instead of going through the ActiveRecord layer, resulting in importing the data in less than a minute compared to 1.5 hours with ActiveRecord. This is the type of information that usually only comes from time spent trying different methods, so it's nice for us to be able to leverage their hard work.

In general I have been impressed with the Apress books ( no pun intended) them and Pragmatic Programmers have really started giving O'Reilly a run for their money.

    Book Description

JavaScript is one of the most important technologies on the web. It provides the means to add dynamic functionality to your web pages and serves as the backbone of Ajax-style web development. Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax is an essential guide for modern JavaScript programming; it's practical but comprehensive. It covers everything you need to know to get up to speed with JavaScript development to add dynamic enhancements to web pages and program Ajax-style applications.

Experienced web developer Christian Heilmann begins gently by giving you an overview of JavaScript--its syntax, good coding practices, and the principles of DOM scripting. Then he builds up your JavaScript toolkit, covering dynamically manipulating markup, changing page styling on the fly using the CSS DOM, validating forms, dealing with images, and much more. Then he takes you to advanced territory, with a complete case study illustrating how many new JavaScript techniques can work together, plus a great introduction to Ajax development.

    5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2007-09-22

I have been going through a lot of javascript books to find that all of them want to teach you the trivial things javascript can do. Not only are the examples trivial, they teach the reader horrible habits. This book doesn't have any "Hello World" examples. It gets into what javascript SHOULD be used for, and how to use it correctly. Other reviews have said that the examples do not work. Do not let that throw you off. I went through the ENTIRE book and every single example worked for me. There are a few towards the end that require a server or a local host like xampp, but either way they still worked. Another review also complained about the DOMhelp library that Chris creates. Chris explains EVERY method in that library before you use it. The library does not do trivial things like "getLinks" You learn how to do that the regular way with the DOM. I think that reviewer got that method mixed up with DOMhelp.getTarget which gets the correct target that a user clicked on depending on which browser the user is using. That is mostly what Chris developed the library for, browser cross compatibility so you don't have to write extensive code. Simply put, some of the other reviews were not very well thought out. If you want to learn useful javascript the right way with plenty of examples to help you learn it, then this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Emphasize "beginner"; "professional" part is false.......2007-09-12

Just be aware of what you're getting into when you buy this book. It is *for beginners*, not for experienced developers. It spends the first 90 pages covering for- and while-loops, if-tests, and the rest of the machinery that you already know if you're an experienced programmer. It is the fate of most computer books, I'm afraid, that they either address rank beginners or professional software developers, with few addressing those in the middle.

After every chapter, I had to take a second to recapitulate what I had just learned into the terminology that I'm aware of from my experience with other languages. One large section, for instance, is devoted to namespace-collision issues -- but the word "namespare" appears nowhere in the index. If you need a book that will jumpstart to "Here's how you solve the namespace-collision problem in JavaScript," this book is not for you.

I had lots of specific questions, having just come to JavaScript. How do I set up a callback *chain*, for instance, on something like the window.onload event? This book is not at that level. It will be unable to answer that question for you. It spends so much time on beginners that it doesn't have enough time to help with best practices or common, cookbook-type programming problems.

And yet it does seem confused about exactly who its audience is. Right after a chapter on basic flow control, Heilmann tosses off "XSLT" as though he expects his readers to know what that is. I submit that those who needed the first chapter will not need the XSLT bit, and conversely.

So just be aware what you're getting into. I'm actually not blaming Heilmann, though I do blame whoever gave the book its title; it's much more about novices than professionals. If you look on the back of this book, you'll see the flow chart that Apress recommends: start with Heilmann's book, and progress into "Pro JavaScript Techniques" and "Pro CSS Techniques." "Pro Javascript" will be my next step.

    3 out of 5 stars Meh..........2007-08-14

He makes me cringe because he describes a lot of practices that are just really cheesy and annoying. People new to programming who start with this book are not going to advance the state of javascript enabled websites. Also, the examples are overly long. There's a 4 page example for each concept.

5 out of 5 stars Bookmarked throughout - lots of useful stuff.......2007-06-15

I liked this book - it has many real applications and explanations. I found myself slipping in markers on lots of pages so that I could come back for information that I knew I needed or showed a better way to code something that I had already done.

2 out of 5 stars Buy DOM Scripting (friendsOfEd) instead.......2007-03-24

Don't let the all-inclusive title of this book fool you - it really doesn't seem to teach that much more than what you could learn by reading DOM Scripting (from Friends of ED). DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model

I keep running into a custom object in the code examples of the book called "DOMhelp". While I like the author's ideas about scripting in a more object oriented way, this does not help at all when trying to demonstrate DOM Scripting. For example, instead of using the actual DOM methods to get all the links on the page and loop through them, he shows you a line of code that just says "DOMhelp.getlinks". Yes, that line does the same thing by accessing his object and running the regular DOM functions, but what does it teach me? Nothing. That alone is a big enough annoyance to regret buying this book.

This book also pulls the "we'll explain that part later" trick one too many times. It's not that this book is completely awful, it's really that you can find a much better book to teach you more useful (and universal) things with DOM Scripting.

1 out of 5 stars Low quality writing.......2007-06-30

I have to admit that I do not write reviews, but this book compelled me to do so. I have read a fair share of computer books in the last fifteen or so years, I'd have to say that this book is one of the worst. Luckily for me, I was familiar with most of the concepts described in it, otherwise, I would be quite lost. This book is on Seam, but the first 100 or so pages are on other technologies. This might be good for some, but I expected to get a Seam book. The number of errors, typos and omissions in this book are innumerable. English is horrible too (has an editor actually read it?). Good percentage of sentences start with "So....". Code examples sometimes list imported classes, and sometimes don't. This makes it very hard to understand where these classes/interfaces/annotations come from. The book is full of statements without a logical path to them. The title says: "From Novice to Professional". Well, this is a bold statement and the the book does not hold up to it. I certainly would not recommend it to a novice, as Seam concepts are not explained well, and would not recommend it to a professional, because it just does not provide answers and does not go deep enough for those trying to dig the Seam. The explanation of a SLSB life cycle and other EJB3 concepts are unintelligible. The only positive thing about this book was time on the market, but as I have read the Michael Yuan's "JBoss Seam" book, online documentation and EJB 3 specification, I'd say that this book was completely useless for me.

    2 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere..........2007-06-26

Don't let this jobfactor happen to you...

    1) the HelloWorld example doesn't work. It's very poor and is missing much detail (WAR or EAR? no ant build script? why is the code for interface file missing? why is this entire example not in the code download? no xml file discussion whatsoever like web.xml or faces-config.xml? seam.properties file is required but no discussion in the HelloWorld example) Off to a poor start.

    2) The author uses "but I'll cover this later on in the chapter" way too many times. Hard to follow.

    3) Not enough details in SEAM and covers JSF and EJB3 too much. The book needed to be a LOT longer to cover the details necessary. There was no coverage on seam-gen. No coverage on best practices.

Save your money and purchase Yuan and Heute's JBOSS SEAM book.

Why didn't Gavin King write a SEAM book? There is a chapter on SEAM in the new Java Persistence with Hibernate book, it's pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Taught me a great deal.......2007-05-04

I learned a great deal from this book. I read it cover to cover. I'll save it for reference and configuration issues.

The first part of the book reviewed JSF and EJB3 and established their relationship to Seam. Since I'm new to those technologies, that really helped me too.

The book is easy to read and was very well written and edited. Congratulations to the author and to the editors.

3 out of 5 stars It does not cover new features in Seam 1.1 and 1.2 .......2007-04-23

This is the only available Seam book on the market, but only cover Seam 1.0.x instead of the latest Seam 1.1 and 1.2. I found that the online PDF manual offers more accurate guide and helps.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Seam as well as EJB3/JSF.......2007-04-09

This book does a great job of introducing the reader to the relevant pieces of EJB3 and JSF that Seam builds upon, and then goes through the various ways you can use Seam. The examples are thorough yet built up slowly; he doesn't skip any steps which is often the case with books on frameworks. I read the book cover to cover and was off and running with Seam, and still from time to time look back on it for details on a specific topic.

It focuses on the core Seam benefits like the annotation framework and persistence contexts, but also covers more advanced topics like Security, AJAX and Rules integration.

James Huddleston's "Beginning C# 2005 Databases, From Novice to Professional" is such a book. Having some former experience with DBs, the first 9 chapters are both a quick read and refresher. The "How It Works" were useful and very clear. The later chapters, especially 13 (Exceptions), 15 (Events), and 17 (XML) in relation to C#, were helpful. The last chapter offers a look into the future with LINQ. I would like to thank Mr. Huddleston for writing this book.

3 out of 5 stars From novice to somewhat less novice.......2007-06-09

[...]In fact it gives a very clear and simple introduction to the very basics of database structure and querying with C#, but it doesn't go beyond that. It seems strange for a 500+ pages text , but most of the space is devoted to long explanations and especially to reprinting the same code over and over. What irritates me is also code formatting. In a mixed attempt to both produce more filler and to indulge on his love for encient poetry and verses the author uses this kind of formatting for basically any string he uses:
    // Set up connection string
    string connString = @"
    server = (local)\MYSERVER;
    integrated security = true;
    database = northwind
    ";
    // Set up query string
    string sql = @"
    select
    *
    from
    employees
    ";
Now, is it really necessary to take 6 or 7 lines for a simple select query or a connection string? No if you are not writing the odissey I think.
Compare for example the extremey compact style of David Sceppa in "[...]Core Reference" where he ha sthe opposite problems of crunching a lot of material in a single book.
In conclusion, if you are really, really an absolute beginner who has no idea of what a table or a query is, and has never used any programming language to query a database, this book can still be useful notwithstanding the misleading title. [...]

    5 out of 5 stars Good Job.......2007-05-04

I got this book a few weeks ago. I try to jump start my leaning process of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005.

In fact, this book is a really good one. This book begins with step-by-step how to set up C# programming and database environment. I like this installation guide since I want to experiment with the exercises in this book and I want to do it right the first time. This book covers fundamental concepts of databases and related data access ADO.Net technology. The author explains very well the following concepts, connections, commands, data readers, data adapters, and data sets, etc. The diagrams in the book really help to understand the relationship between the concepts mentioned above. In addition, the author also includes topics such as transaction, xml, working with text and binary data, and LINQ.

I do think the author should include the topic of CLR integration with SQL Server 2005. CLR integration allows you to create database objects including stored procedures, triggers, user-defined functions, UDTs, and aggregates, in ANY .Net languages. CLR provides much more power and flexibility than T-SQL. In addition, CLR integration has other great benefits too.

Bottom line. It is a very good introductory book about ADO.Net, SQL, and C#. It is a good reference book for experienced professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on using C# and VS to Access Database.......2007-03-23

The author really explains in detail the in's and out's of dealing with databases from the C# perpective. Not only those he provides the same code which many books do, But he explains in detail what is happening behind the scene. He provides excellent examples of parallel access to the same data source through ADO.net, OleDB, and the old ODBC connections.

5 out of 5 stars Best book of its kind!.......2007-01-04

Beginning C# 2005 Databases is a superb introduction to SQL database programming. The book operates effectively on three levels: as a conceptual overview of SQL relational databases, as an introduction to Microsoft's ADO.NET architecture, and as a "hands-on" guide to database programming with C#. The structure of the book is exceptionally well thought out and admirably facilitates Huddleston's economical, attention sustaining writing style. The book operates as a tightly organized, multi-pass tour through some world-class database programming scenery. Huddleston picks out the major landmarks, provides the reader with an opportunity to gain some interesting first hand experience, and then revisits each landmark later after the reader is in a position to appreciate how the details fit into the big picture. Chapters 1 and 2 get the reader over the hump of installing Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Express (VCSE)and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SSE), two very powerful, freely available products that provide the platform for all of the examples. Chapters 3, 10, 11 and 12 show off the high ground of SQL architecture. Huddleston reveals himself to be an experienced guide with strong opinions about what's worth looking at. His calling attention, if only briefly, to the relational calculus and normalization show a concern for providing the reader with a sophisticated viewpoint and plan for follow-up reading. Chapters 4, 7, 8 and 15 introduce and describe Microsoft's ADO.NET as a platform supporting database applications. To my mind, these are the most difficult sections of the book. Huddleston picks an intelligible path through some very challenging terrain, neither avoiding the hard climbs nor losing the reader in the wasteland of detail. Chapters 5,6, 9, 14 and 16 provide an extended excursion into database programming. Huddleston makes it look easy. With his simple, but well chosen examples, and his streamlined, unadorned code he provides the reader with the templates and tools to set out on her own off road experience. The last two chapters of the book provide tutorials on XML and LINQ, Microsoft's general-purpose query capability.

Beginning C# 2005 Databases clearly sets the standard for this class of book. With an expert command of the subject, good judgment about what is important, well-crafted code and a devotion to clarity Huddleston has written a book that should appeal to both novice and professional alike.
