4 out of 5 stars Destined to be one of your "breakup buddies".......2007-10-04

Reading this book after a breakup is a little like Bridget Jones taking relationship advice from the Smug Marrieds after her breakup with Daniel. But still, I didn't think the authors' writing was pedantic in any way.

The basic message of the book was, "get over him already." Filled with Q and As and basic exercises to get things out of your system, the book also offers strategies for coping effectively with getting over your breakup. Most importantly: do not call. Having recently gone through a breakup myself, I'd add another commandment to the list: don't cry over every little thing that reminds you of your ex (case in point: my ex's last name was Smith, and for three months after the relationship ended, every time I ran into someone with that last name, I burst into tears).

The book is funny and witty, and highly enjoyable, even if the authors aren't the most highly qualified to write about the subject (almost everybody could write a book about how someone or multiple people broke their heart). Many of the things the author says are completely true and blatantly obvious, but the person getting over the breakup doesn't always realize it. The book also made me realize that I'm not as heartbroken as I thought I was.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for those ready to move on after a breakup.......2007-09-28

I am a psychologist working at a college counseling center, and I have recommended this book to several of my clients who have experienced a relationship breakup. However, because the tone of this book is very lighthearted, almost irreverent, I've been selective in my recommendations. The authors--a husband and wife team who talk freely about their own past breakups--infuse plenty of humor into their work. There can be a thin line between being funny and empowering versus funny and belittling, and I do believe the authors fall well on the side of the former, but still, I'd recommend this book mainly for those who are READY to move on after a breakup but just are not sure how to do so.

The book has two main parts: "The Breakup," which centers around coming to terms with the reality that the relationship is truly over, and "The Breakover," which focuses on coping with this new reality. The chapters contain a wealth of helpful information, from personal stories by the authors to simple exercises and questionnaires to occasional recipes (I plan to try the "Crack Brownies" soon!). The second part of the book focuses on "Breakup Commandments" and contains a special chapter for men called "Dude, Get Off Her Long." On the whole, however, this book is mainly geared towards empowering women who have been dumped, with the authors frequently using endearments designed to give a much-needed self-esteem boost (including calling the reader "Superfox," "Pretty Lady," and "Hot Stuff").

Overall, the main point of this book is that the breakups are like a serious illness which is undeniably painful yet completely curable. With empathy, wisdom, and wit, the authors provide plenty of hope that you can pass through the destruction and devastation left by your broken relationship and embrace the wonderful new life waiting for you.

3 out of 5 stars Funny but sad for brokenup couples.......2007-09-20

I'm not picky reading books. sometimes i read business books, and sometimes i read romance or salty novels.
I used to read serious psychological books and cooking recipe books..and so on.
I love books because through reading books i could know what i never got an experience and never done before.
The reason i say that i'm not picky reading books something is that i've read kind of simple, humorous and might be low quality but useful book for our life.
The book is just 'It's called a BREAKUP Because it's BROKEN'
Actually the author wrote this book as a kind of solution for just broken couple especially for girls. how to get over it and how to forget my ex. and what should we do after breaking up the relationship. As you know we spend so hard time after breaking up. The author as a counselor is trying to get people who just broke up encourage. But the side effect of this book is just that the breaking up relationship looks like easy to handle and solve, even subtle and simple one. Anytime we could find another partner as a girlfriend and boyfriend. just forget your ex even if you are so difficult to being alone and trying to find new one. Because of author's these statements make this book so funny and humorous.
Isn't it too much sad ? Through talking other people's sadness we could enjoy reading.
But i should recommend this book for just breaking up couples. It could help them.

4 out of 5 stars Your replacement best friend.......2007-09-15

Greg and Amiira do a great job of providing sound advice and personal experience while topping it all off with great humor. Sure, not everyone is going to find the advice in this book overly astounding. For example, I think most girls know that it is probably not a good idea to keep calling your ex or secretly stalking his old hangouts. However, Greg and Amiira give the little extra nudge you need in order to see the light at the end of the tunnel and not pick up the phone instead of just knowing that you shouldn't. Plus the little extra bonus in this book is reading about all the crazy things people have done after a break-up. Reading their craziness pushes you to be even more sane and on your way to becoming a SuperFox!!

The only downside to this book for me was that I was the one that broke up with my boyfriend. Ninety percent of the time the book takes the perspective of the person dumped. It still was helpful, but just because you ended a relationship doesn't mean it hurts any less. I would have liked to see both perspectives more.

2 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.......2007-09-15

After mutually agreeing to break up after 4 1/2 years I was still very sad and looking for something to help. This book wasn't it.

Whilst I like the fact that they try to get you to think positively about yourself, the "superfox" term is outdated annoying and distracting.

It covers questions or feelings you may have, but the "you thought your break up was bad" sections aren't very positive. I found myself not wanting to read them because I want encouragement, not stories of other peoples nightmares that could happen to anyone.

I have found other books helpful and I will keep them or give them to friends in need, this book will be donated to my local library. Hopefully someone else (maybe younger than mid-thirties) will find it helpful or insightful. I did not.

1 out of 5 stars A Never-Ending Tale.......2007-07-05

I should have gotten a clue from the florid title. This is a tiresome novel that goes on & on & on. The plot starts out well, but then disintegrates after 200 pages. Was this author being paid by "the word"? I became very impatient reading it & kept wondering when, if ever it would end. The writing is rather in the trend of "then he said", "she said" scant descriptive writing I expected better. Ms. King tried to squeeze too much into this tale.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful read.......2007-07-03

I enjoyed this immensely. Well written and a wonderful escape read for those of us women who are a little older. :) Enjoy

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read!.......2007-06-20

The book started really slow for me and didn't grab me to read on at all. I stuck to it though and am glad I did. I can relate to the "letting your husband go" aspect of the main character (since I loss my husband just 2 yrs ago)and learning to let yourself be loved again. At times, it felt like 'past' information was withheld from the reader for too long (how her husband died for instance). I loved the book though in the end.

5 out of 5 stars When traveling on the road to self-discovery, it can be a long ride home...........2007-05-30

Clare Ballenger is an extraordinary woman who has finally come into her own after many years of being in the shadows. Since her marriage ended in tragedy, Clare has focused exclusively on her lucrative career as a divorce therapist. While helping hundreds of men and women mend their broken hearts, Claire chooses not to follow the sound advice she dishes out to her clients. Falling in love again is the last thing she wants.

Clare is furious when her best friend, Dory, decides to reconcile with estranged husband Son. After all, Son doesn't really deserve Dory...or so Clare thinks. Finally realizing that Son and Dory will be staying together, her attention shifts to her own situation. Although fully aware of how lonely her life has become, she constantly beats herself up about her husband Mack's shocking death. Was it her fault?

As if her demons couldn't haunt her any more, Clare has her hands full with her daughter. Haley, the product of a fling her husband had before they were together, experienced a horrible childhood, but Clare found it in her heart to welcome the girl with open arms. Mack never liked Haley's spouse, Austin. Always the one to spot things, Clare drops the ball on Austin and is blind-sided when he leaves Haley and her grandchildren for another woman. Wanting to be there for her daughter, Clare is unconsciously forced into confronting her own mishaps and skeletons. It's amazing what you see when you take the time to look in the mirror.

Wanting to be loved, but trapped in the comfortable position of shutting herself out, Clare has some difficult decisions to make. Should she open up and confront her past, move on and live somewhat happily ever after? Or should she wallow in self-pity, guilt and a psychotic need to constantly relive the not-so-perfect life she had with her deceased husband? It's bad enough that Rye, Mack's cousin, has been chasing Clare since his death. But then there's also Lex, a retired sea captain and new owner of the marina, who's very interested in her --- though Lex's ex-wife is hell-bent on rekindling their relationship. When does the madness end?

Cassandra King pens a novel full of self-reflection, truth and honesty that will compel readers to think about their own lives as well. Witty and light-hearted with some grim and poignant moments, the storyline shows how very hard it is to face your demons, whatever they may be. King does an excellent job of portraying how life has its own way, whether we like it or not. But what we choose to do with it is an entirely different story.

If you're looking for an inspiring read, QUEEN OF BROKEN HEARTS certainly does the trick. One thing is for sure: When traveling on the road to self-discovery, it can be a long ride home.

4 out of 5 stars Combination chick-lit and Southern tale..........2007-05-29

Queen of Broken Hearts by Cassandra King is a combination chick-lit and Southern tale. This delightfully charming novel takes place in Fairhope, Alabama.

Clare Ballenger is a psychologist who specializes in helping people (mostly women) put their lives back together as they navigate through a divorce. She is in the process of building a retreat on land given to her by her mother-in-law, Zoe Catherine. Unfortunately for Clare, her own marriage ended with the death of her husband in a tragic accident. While Clare's specialty is helping others, she seems unable to help herself. Although she has two possible romantic interests, she keeps both at arms length, refusing to trust her heart to love again. She also wears blinders when it comes to the marriage of her daughter.

King excels in her characters, and Broken Hearts is filled with a number of quirky individuals. There is Lex (sturdy marine owner from Maine), Rye (the pretty local society boy) and Zoe (who lives in a bird sanctuary and has shunned society). There is also daughter Haley and best friend Dory. King writes of strong relationships between Clare and the women in her life. Their friendships are a driving force in helping all the women deal with adversity.

While I enjoyed Queen of Broken Hearts, I thought the plot was a bit predictable. But only a Southern author can write a good Southern tale, and I look forward to each book that Cassandra King writes.

Book Description

National best seller and Today show Book Club selection, Broken for You is the story of two women in self-imposed exile whose lives are transformed when their paths intersect. Stephanie Kallos's debut novel is a work of infinite charm, wit and heart. It is also a glorious homage to the beauty of broken things. When we meet septuagenarian Margaret Hughes, she is living alone in a mansion in Seattle with only a massive collection of valuable antiques for company. Enter Wanda Schultz, a young woman with a broken heart who has come west to search for her wayward boyfriend. Both women are guarding dark secrets and have spent many years building up protective armor against the outside world. As their tentative friendship evolves, the armor begins to fall away and Margaret opens her house to the younger woman. This launches a series of unanticipated events, leading Margaret to discover a way to redeem her cursed past, and Wanda to learn the true purpose of her cross-country journey. Both funny and heartbreaking, Broken for You is a testament to the saving graces of surrogate families and shows how far the tiniest repair jobs can go in righting the world's wrongs.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Senseless in Seattle.......2007-09-16

The best thing about this novel is its setting - Seattle, city of residence of the author. The worst is everything else. The story itself, about an elderly woman recluse named Margaret who lives alone in a mansion with valuable ill-gotten goods until she is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, is utterly senseless. After her diagnosis, Margaret chooses to take in a boarder whose temperament and personality suit her mission, which relates to the relics she has watched over for so long. Once the whole "broken" reference becomes is revealed, there isn't much else to it. If, once all of the main characters have appeared, the reader conjures up the sappiest ending possible for each of them, they will have a pretty good idea of the plot. Why, the reader might ask, must the valuable, intact items be "broken" as opposed to say something slightly logical like: donated to an appropriate charity, museum or cause. And if certain plot critical items had been broken, the inevitable (page 341) could not have occurred. Most of the characters stink. And although the only real villain in the story is the father of a main character, the actions of three of the other males don't exactly warm the heart: one deserts his child; one waits ridiculously long for a love interest to "come around," and another does the unspeakable, then tops it off by finding himself a trophy wife. A female character pines ridiculously long after her (fatherly?) love interest: an older, unattractive drunkard. Margaret herself makes some pretty unlikely life choices, which can only be explained by attributing them to the effects of the tumor on her brain. And that only covers the living. Besides the nonsensical plot and the overwhelmingly mediocre, spineless, sorry, sad sacks characters, there are several pages containing overly graphic descriptions of intimate behavior that just don't suit the tone of the book. For a fabulous novel with a Holocaust-related theme, try The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

5 out of 5 stars More Moving Than Most.......2007-09-13

What a great book! The reader grasps early on that breakage (or our collective obsession to avoid it) will be a multi-layered metaphor throughout the book. Kallos' deft character development and their respective tragedies drew me in as though meeting new friends with familiar pain. Thoroughly quirky and cumulatively predictable, the story builds as brokenness and suffering is given great worth - something hard to grasp when you're the one who is hurting, but it's one of humanity's greatest truisms. This book closely compares to John Irving's many delights by demonstrating that our oddities and tragedies prove to be the real substance and perverse joy of being alive.

2 out of 5 stars and now a warning.......2007-09-06

If you like good fiction maybe you should wait for the author's next book. This book begins promisingly but becomes increasingly absurd. Tiresome by the middle, irritating by the end, very hard to finish(club pick). It is well-written and VERY ambitious but the book's real relationships (father/daughter, owner/objects, jilted lovers, guilt/retribution for a few)are mainly resolved so poorly that I would warn serious readers off this one.
The author's Big Themes keep piling up. Many bad fiction cliches including insta-friends, saintly boyfriends, ghosts.

1 out of 5 stars Could have been great.......2007-08-10

This book had the potential to be a wonderful book, with engaging characters, and conflicts that most people could relate to. What spoiled it for me was the generous use of profanity and filthy language. The attitude the author and the characters have toward the "marital embrace" has nothing to do with marriage at all. She treats sexuality with a very offensive courseness. Minus the gutter language and a barn yard approach to intimacy, I might have liked this book.

5 out of 5 stars Made Whole by being Broken.......2007-07-17

This is by far one of the most favorite books I have ever read. The weaving of the characters and their brokenness into healing and redemption is amazing. I highly recommend it. I read a borrowed copy and then had to go buy one so I could own it!

Book Description

In this rare, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in hospitals across the country, a longtime medical insider and international authority on childbirth assesses the flawed American maternity care system, powerfully demonstrating how it fails to deliver safe, effective care for both mothers and babies. Written for mothers and fathers, obstetricians, nurses, midwives, scientists, insurance professionals, and anyone contemplating having a child, this passionate exposé documents how, in the most expensive maternity care system in the world, women have lost control over childbirth and what the disturbing results of this phenomenon have been. Born in the USA examines issues including midwifery and the safety of out-of-hospital birth, how the process of becoming a doctor can adversely affect both practitioners and their patients, and why there has been a rise in the use of risky but doctor-friendly interventions, including the use of Cytotec, a drug that has not been approved by the FDA for pregnant women. Most importantly, this gripping investigation, supported by many troubling personal stories, explores how women can reclaim the childbirth experience for the betterment of themselves and their children.
Born in the USA tells:
* Why women are 70% more likely to die in childbirth in America than in Europe
* What motivates obstetricians to use dangerous and unnecessary drugs and procedures
* How the present malpractice crisis has been aggravated by the fear of accountability
* Why procedures such as cesarean section and birth inductions are so readily used

5 out of 5 stars Every woman should read this book.......2007-09-08

This book should be make available to all women having babies, in all book stores right next to "What to Expect When Your Expecting", and other bools like that. "Born in the U.S.A.", tells the truth about the harm done to women, and their babies in the American medical services system. I refer to health care as medical services, because there is very little healthy caring going on in America. I'm a former RN who belives in doing right by my patients, thats why I'm a former RN. If you read "Born in the U.S.A.", you will get a clear picture of why nurses leave and women are damaged.

5 out of 5 stars Born in the USA.......2007-09-01

This book was excellent, an eye opener, it should be read by every person involved in the care of pregnant women. It was very encouraging to me, as i work in a natural birthing center, and it strengthened my belief in and commitment to midwifery, natural childbirth and out-of-hospital birth. Wagner is very thorough, breaking down the valid (and invalid) research, readable and comprehendable even for those not in the medical/scientific fields. I only wish he went into more detail about the dangers of medications during labor (narcotics, epidurals, etc). Taking birth out of the hospital setting for all healthy pregnant woman will mean no more artificial means of pain relief which i think will be the hardest sell to american women who have been taught to fear labor pain and usually are depending on that quick fix (epidural).

5 out of 5 stars If you are having a baby or know anyone who is this is a MUST READ!.......2007-08-28

America is pretty screwed up with our birth practices, and this just shows exactly how much!! A MUST READ if you are involved with babies and birth at all!!

5 out of 5 stars Every OB, MW, CBE, doula and parent should own this book!.......2007-07-20

Childbirth professionals, educators and expecting parents should fully understand the U.S. maternity system, how it is broken, how to fix it and what this means to them! Childbirth is negatively affected everyday with the loss of the mother's life, loss of the baby's life, permanent or temporary damage to the baby or mother or bad emotional experiences as a result of a traumatic childbirth related to the unnecessary and overuse and overtreatment of laboring mothers and in-utereo babies with medical interventions, episiotomies and cesarean sections. Dr. Wagner captures the reader's attention from the start with his honesty and experience. It is very rare to have a glimpse into the world of medicine and obstetrics that is as truth-telling and eye-opening as this. I recommend everyone involved in childbirth to read this book!!

Do it for your patients, your sisters, your wives, your daughters, your friends...

I am a certified doula and attend homebirths and hospital births. I leave the hospital births often feeling sad, depressed and discouraged and worrying about the health of the mother and newborn. What I see happening to child-bearing women in hospitals is downright criminal, and Marsden Wagner exposes it all; this is not hype, I see it happening with almost every hospital birth; please, if you are considering birthing in a hospital, read this book, it is an eye-opening expose. And consider having a homebirth, it's very, very safe!

Book Description

From rock bottom to recovery—the son of veteran broadcaster Bill Moyers chronicles his life- shattering battle with addiction and the hard-won fight for recovery

William Cope Moyers has come a long, long way. In 1994, he lay on the floor of an Atlanta crack house. His father had put together a search party. His worried family waited at home where Moyers had left them when he embarked on yet another binge. From that lowly, drug-hazed night, Moyers went on to become an executive at the Hazelden Foundation and travels far and wide to talk about addiction and treatment.

Broken tells the story of what happened between then and now—from growing up the privileged son of Bill Moyers to his descent into alcoholism and drug addiction, his numerous stabs at getting clean, his many relapses, and how he managed to survive. Harrowing and wrenching, Broken paints a picture of a man with every advantage who nonetheless found himself spiraling into a dark and life-threatening abyss. But unlike other memoirs of its kind, Broken emerges into the clear light of Moyers's recovery as he dedicates his life to changing the politics of addiction. Beautifully written with a deep underlying spirituality, this is a missive of hope for the scores of Americans struggling with addiction—and an honest and inspiring account that proves the spiritual insight that we are strongest at the broken places.

And leave room for mystery - the truth that lies beyond our capacity to know...Be your self..." These are the words that Bill Moyers, nationally renowned adviser to Presidents, political genius and acclaimed author and journalist, writes to his son Cope at a critical juncture of the latter's life.

Cope Moyers initially loves growing up with a famous father and the privileges it seems to automatically confer. But as Cope reaches his teenage years, he begins to wonder who he is individually and what he will become. Thus begins the confusing, torturous, downward spiraling path that leads through cycles of drug addiction, attempted recovery, and temporary rebounding.

Cope has a flare for journalism of his own style but can't explore it while he is coping with a lack of faith in himself and God.

So what exactly marks this memoir as unique from all the other dysfunctional tales of hitting the bottom and recovery? Cope Moyers and his father as well come to terms with the true nature of addiction that clearly shows the ability to mercilessly plunge the depth of the addictive personality. The lies, delusions, distorted rationale and so much more are clearly explored and exposed in a fresh manner that will inspire both those living with this disease and those willing to accept the positive healing process that promises enduring recovery!

Very well done, interesting, shocking and mandatory reading for those willing to face the truth about the nature of being "broken."

Introduction: What begins as a rather insightful journey into the lives of the Moyers' family - through Cope's collection of original correspondence - explodes into a full-blown recruitment poster for Hazelden's 12-step, one-size-fits-all - very expensive - recovery program.
First observation: At the onset I truly believed his foundation VP position was merely a good fit considering his experience; half-way through I felt as severely beaten with its propaganda as James Frey was before boarding the plane to Minnesota.
Clinical assessment: While Mr Moyers, Jr keeps extensive recovery journals, not one sentence is devoted to his detox.
Conclusion: Spend your money on HBO's 'Addiction' series instead; it includes up-to-date information & a number of possible - working - solutions for the many faces of chemical dependency.

4 out of 5 stars A 14 hour Speaker Meeting!.......2007-08-02

I listened to the book on CD, and it was riveting on many levels. However, I believe the gaps of critical information detracted from the work as a whole. Let's remember, memoirs are not documentaries. They have come to be the equivalent of creative non-fiction, as in the vagaries of the phrase "based on a true story or true events." Watch for the escape hatch language!

How come we had to wait until the end of the book to learn that Allison (exotica from Bermuda) makes jewelry and is taking painting classes? IOW, since Cope picked her out of an AA meeting (or she picked him), what exactly was their status and class difference, if any. We learn precious little about her, other than an inference that she must have attended lots of Al-Anon meetings in addition to her own AA groups to stick with him through all that muck and mire.

Also, how is it that a person with fragile sobriety (3 relapses) of such short duration (1 year) lands an executive position with a high profile recovery program (Hazelden) he could not successfully complete? Could it be his last name? (Thanks, Dad!)And shame on Hazelden too, if the facts are as Moyers relates: he knew nothing about policy, but they gave him an interview anyway. Has that happened to you in your chosen field lately?

Admittedly, listening to the CDs makes one susceptible to the tone of the reader. I think Moyers should have read it himself, as I am sure his grandiosity would have been very helpful on this task.

Lastly, about the NY Penal Law. In 1980, the burglary he describes in the book is not a Class A felonly, unless he left out the part about killing someone, which obviously did not happen. And if he pled guilty to Disorderly Conduct, that was a mere Violation (not even a misdemeanor). Otherwise, we have fact-checking problems. A journalist would have been more sensitive to these legal details.

I am certainly glad Moyers is in recovery, his cancer was not malignant, and the family is healthy and wealthy. But how much of his success was truly earned is up to serious debate.

3 out of 5 stars A little annoying.......2007-05-30

While I am happy that Mr. Moyers finally beat his addiction and has done much to raise public awareness about addiction and recovery, I found his story to have a very strong undercurrent, even at the end, of "Poor me, poor me, my famous father, wah-wah-wah." He never seemed to really let go of blaming his father in some ways for his addiction. He even throws in at the end that his melanoma was his parents' fault because they didn't put sunscreen on him as a child.

I was reminded sometimes of "A Million Little Pieces" while reading this. Both authors seem to be almost bragging about their drug use at times and their brushing shoulders with shady characters. And Mr. Moyers is constantly pointing out how he was SO different from all the addicts he got high with, with his "polo shirt and neatly combed hair." Or how he would sweep in like some kind of White Knight into the ghetto and give a prostitute addict money and toothpaste, never wanting sex, just to be shown where the drugs were.

Interesting story, but I was annoyed with his attitude much of the time!

5 out of 5 stars Broken gave me hope........2007-05-14

Broken educated me about the addict, what living as an addict must really be like. As the parent of an addict, I read Broken with horror and frustration, but finished it with hope. Moyers' position on treatment and addiction as the misunderstood disease made me want to become an adovocate for helping change attitudes and stances about the disease of addiction in the medical and insurance arenas.

The quality of the printing is far from perfect. It smooches on several pages. Also, I read the French version first and the English one is, in my opinion, rather lame. A lot of work would need to be done to improve it.

5 out of 5 stars San Theodoros, Britain, Syldavia.......2006-11-17

"The Adventures of Tintin: Volume 2" contains three more adventure comics by Herge, in a handy sized hardcover book. Here, we get "The Broken Ear" (1937), an adventure in a civil-war torn part of South America, "The Black Island" (1938) a chase through Britain, and "King Ottokar's Sceptre" (1939), featuring a plot against a "Syldavian" king. A few well known Tintin characters first appear in these stories. General Alcazar first appears in "The Broken Ear", Dr Muller appears in "The Black Island" and Bianca Castifiore sings her first song to Tintin in "King Ottokar's Sceptere". They're all exciting, intriguing adventures, my favorite in this bunch being "The Black Island", mainly for the chase sequences and the island's "beast".

The text and pictures are a little smaller, but it's easy enough to read, and the detail of the pictures is maintained. It's really great value too. Here on amazon you could buy two or three of these for one normal sized hardcover Tintin. That's 5-8 more adventures for the same price!

Definitely worth picking up if you're interested.

4 out of 5 stars Immature Mother.......2006-11-10

I've always enjoyed reading the Adventures of Tintin. The 3-in-1 hardcover books are good on the budget but the dimensions are smaller than the individual paperback books. Some of the storylines are a little dated and the jokes do get somewhat repetative. The later stories tend to get "silly" with characters falling down and running into things more often than the older stories but I think that's what made my 9 year old daughter enjoy them since she doesn't really follow the stories very well. If you like Tintin, you'll want to buy all of the books and you will reread them.

5 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage.......2006-09-09

Volume 2: The Broken Ear (1937), The Black Island (1938), King Ottokar's Sceptre (1942). This is the second instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

The famous slogan, "for young readers 7 to 77", already validated by the previous three adventures, is further endorsed by what follows.

The Broken Ear takes us to the Amazon, in South America of course, where we meet the Arumbaya Indians, General Alcazar, and, well, just read it. I don't want to give spoilers. This adventure is another outstanding one, and very well translated. In the English version, the Indians' talk, apparently in some mysterious language, is understandable if read out loud. Already five continents visited in four stories!

The Black Island, which takes place in England and especially Scotland, is not up to the usual Tintin standards (one central theme is revisited and far better handled in a later adventure), but a Tintinophile would certainly not want to miss it.

King Ottokar's Sceptre, however, is a magnificent creation. We meet the Castafiore (= "chaste flower") for the first time, a soprano with an ego that would make Callas suffocate, the only major female character in the entire series, and a truly amazing personage. But the real achievement is the creation of an entire fictional kingdom (Syldavia, and a rival neighbouring nation, Borduria, also fictional) with a `reproduction' of a tapestry giving its history, and an adventure that would be meaningless without it. This is a huge achievement for a 62-page children's comic book.

5 out of 5 stars A trio of solid Tintin adventures from the late 1930s.......2005-09-09

Volume 2 of "The Adventures of Tintin" brings together a trio of stories by Hergé from the late 1930s, right before World War II. This is noteworthy because at this point Hergé is refining his attention to cultural detail in these stories, but also starting to get more fanciful and away from what is happening in the real world. You will still find allegorical elements in these stories, but none of the events ripped from the headlines that you saw in previous tales such as "The Blue Lotus."

"The Broken Ear" is from 1937 as our hero and his faithful companion Snowy go it alone through a series of perilous episodes, although there are brief appearances by the Thom(p)sons and Professor Calculus. The title defect belongs to an Arumbaya Fetish at the Museum of Ethnography which is stolen and then mysteriously returned. When Tintin notices the sacred tribal object now has two perfect ears and our hero is quickly in full Sherlock Holmes mode. However, Tintin is not the only one in search of the real fetish as his path starts crossing that of a pair of mysterious figures. After a series of incidents involving the search for a talking parrot, everyone finds themselves on a ship bound South American way for the Republic of San Theodoros, which happens to be where the Arumbaya tribe lives along the banks of the River Coliflor. There Tintin becomes involved in the political turmoil of San Theodoros and eventually gets around to traveling up the jungle river to find the Arumbayas. Meanwhile, poor Snowy finds that his tail becomes a sore point time and time again. In "The Broken Ear" the mystery takes something of a back seat to the repeated perils faced by Tintin. I went back and counted them up and on average Tintin faces death or severe physical harm once every three pages in this 64-page story, which might be a record for our intrepid reporter.

For the most part I do not like the early Tintin adventures where there is a lot of slapstick and every other page our intrepid reporter hero is either holding a gun or having somebody hold a gun on him as much as the latter adventures. However, "The Black Island" is certainly the epitome of this type of Tintin adventure and Hergé really pours it on pretty much from start to finish. This might be slapstick but it is nonstop slapstick from Tintin trying to stop the Thom(p)sons from arresting him to Snowy getting the better of a gorilla (but not a spider). Tintin might end up unconscious more often in this story than all of his other adventures combined. The beginning is simple enough as Tintin sees a plane land with engine trouble. Noticing it is an unregistered plane he offers to help and is immediately shot (do not worry, the bullet only grazes his ribs). Of course Tintin wants to get to the bottom of this mystery but it is hard to collect clues when people are trying to kill you and you have no clue why. Besides, in this one Tintin gets to wear a kilt, not to mention a bonnie bonnet as the titular piece of property happens to be in Scotland. All things considered "The Black Island" has got to be the funniest of Hergé stories.

In contrast "King Ottokar's Sceptre" is an adventure in which our intrepid hero gets to do a lot of deductive reasoning. Certainly there are more actual clues than Hergé usually includes in his mysteries, which means you really have to pay attention as you play along this time. Tintin encounters Professor Alembik, who studies seals (no, silly, not the friendly little animals but the things you stamp into wax on official papers). This seems a harmless career choice but Tintin finds that both he and the good professor are embroiled with secret agents and a plot against the King of Syldavia. It turns out there is a major loophole in the laws of the monarchy, for if H.M. King Muskar XII, the present ruler of Syldavia, were to lose possession of King Ottokar's sceptre, he would lose the right to rule and have to abdicate. This would work to the advantage of the bad guys across the border in Borduria, where everybody seems decided Eastern European and probably pro-Communist or at least very much into Socialism, so it is up to Tintin and Snowy to save the day. They are aided in this endeavor by Thomson and Thompson of the C.I.D.; to be precise, they endeavor to aid. There is also Tintin's first meeting with Bianca Castafiore in this very solid offering from Hergé. This is an actual mystery, where clues need to be solved and mysterious developments need to be explained.

Some of these early adventures of Tintin have engendered criticism because of the way Hergé draws a Negro in caricature and I certainly do not want to suggest that a white male European was not representative of the inherent racism of his culture, but I would point out that Hergé, like Edgar Rice Burroughs writing at roughly the same time, relied heavily on stereotypes for many of his characters and that you will find "good" and "bad" types for every race and ethnicity Tintin encounters. Certainly the South Americans Tintin encounters in San Theodoros, with their heavy accents, fiery tempers and tendency towards extreme violence, are central to any such critique. But Herge also displays some sensitivity towards the native tribes of the area that is rather enlightened. If Tintin engaged in slurs or derogatory comments towards anyone, that would be something different, but our hero only thinks in terms of "good" and "bad," not "white" and "black". Anyhow, you can read these stories and decide for yourself where you stand on this issue.

"Lucas Davenport confronts a living nightmare, in one of the scariest Prey novels yet from the number-one bestselling author. The ""Big Three"" are a trio of inmates locked up in the Minnesota Security Hospital over the years, each a particularly vicious serial killer, each with his own distinct style and propensities. Everybody feels much safer knowing that they're behind bars. Except . . . there's a new killer on the loose. And his handiwork bears a disturbing resemblance to some of the finer points practiced by the Big Three, details that never even made the papers. Davenport and his team quickly home in on a possible suspect, a man named Charlie Pope, who was released from the same hospital prison a few weeks earlier, and who now seems to have cut himself free from his court-imposed ankle bracelet and disappeared. But is he really the one? And why do the Big Three look so agitated? Brilliantly suspenseful, consistently surprising-once again, Sandford has outdone himself."

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Addition to the Prey Series.......2007-09-22

I wish I had been able to read this series in order. However, each book seems to do fine as a stand alone as well. The book keeps you guessing as to actually did it, the murderer was quite clever in covering his tracks. There is a lot of language in this book, as well as very graphic descriptions of pychosexual crimes. Definitely not for the faint at heart!

4 out of 5 stars Unbroken Page Thriller.......2007-08-27

Lucas Davenport is on the trail of another killer. The recently released Charlie Pope has gone on a murder spree -- or has he?

The family is overseas so the action is all about the mystery. I'll try to avoid spoilers, but there are a number of twists and turns. From reading the other reviews, you already know that the book is a bit "rough" -- there are a lot of killings and they are sexually oriented. Clearly if you are squeamish, this isn't the book for you -- but then you probably aren't in this genre if that bothers you.

4 out of 5 stars Broken Prey.......2007-08-18

I have read the entire series of John Sandford (The Prey series)books with increased interest and hope he continues to write more.

2 out of 5 stars A gal's review of "Broken Prey".......2007-07-29

A crime-mystery, but Jeffery Deaver has set the bar very high, and John Sandford doesn't quite measure up. The characters are flat and dull, and apparently they don't know that over 95% of male rapes are committed by HETEROsexual men, NOT homosexual ones. And this ****ing book can't seem to get off the "gay" thing after a male murder victim is found to have been raped before his death. $%^&* It just irritates the **** out of me. It's already hard enough to get male rape victims to come forward, and the whole "if you are a man and you got raped, you must be gay" doesn't help one bit. And as I said before, well over 90% of the RAPISTS are heterosexual. Rape is about power and domination, not about sex.

Do your homework next time, John Sandford.

Eventually, though very slowly, the book starts to redeem itself. But the characters are rather flat. I guess I'm spoiled on Jeffery Deaver's incredibly complex characters.

Not a terrible book, and I'm sure many people love it, but it's just not my cup of tea.

4 out of 5 stars Lucas Davenport is human, after all.......2007-07-23

Another fine crime novel by one of the masters of the genre. Is Sandford finally bringing Lucas Davenport down to earth, a bit? Our Hero unearths an important clue early on, but never follows up on it after the pool of suspects is narrowed, thereby allowing the killer to trigger the horrific shootout at the end. Still, it's a satisfying read. Secondary characters are well-drawn and the running schtick about his iPod and the 100 greatest rock songs provides periodic comic relief.

If you are a spiritual person this is NOT the book for you!!! Some suggestions include casual sex, smoking pot, acting as if you are someone else, wearing clevage showing clothes, putting Hustler and Playboy on the coffee table, watching Deep Throat, whispering "I feel like I'm being raped" in your lover's ear, you get the picture ! I found myself laughing out loud. They can't be serious. Get yourself a book on meditation instead !!!

2 out of 5 stars This is just terrible........2005-01-31

I suffered a break up exactly one week ago and was in the bookstore searching for some solace. I looked through this book and I am sorry to say it made me feel worse than I do right now, if that's even possible.

The book does an excellent job relating to how you feel after a terrible breakup--after the first week of course, I am pretty miserable--but besides that, the strategies offered are really awful and could possibly set you back. Among the bad ideas throughout the book:

(1) Call your ex. Excuse me?? I need to make a clean break here and get on with my life, not risk the possibility of being re-rejected or offered some false hopes.
(2) Go out and have sex. It should be self-explanatory why this one is not helpful.
(3) Have an "implosion" ceremony, where you take out ALL the remaining mementos of your ex (that you should have carefully saved, according to these authors), and surround yourself with them while you watch old home videos and/or listen to the songs you had together. Spend the entire day in mourning and don't do anything to improve your mood. Follow this day with a celebration of the ending of the relationship.
(4) An extensive checklist in the beginning of the book that labels your symptoms as "compulsive," "hysterical," "depressive" and other words that make you feel like you've really lost your mind.

Perhaps this book could be helpful, but ideas like these should best be carried out with the supervision of a therapist.

In this example filled guide to crucial confrontations - those times when holding someone accountable is critical to what is important to you - the authors present a relational model for what to do as you become aware of a gap between your expectations and what has or is happening in the specific situation.

The concept approaches the crucial confrontation in `before', `during', and `after' steps; requiring you to spend some `before' time deciding `what' is the specific issue to be addressed and `if' you should enter into the crucial confrontation - what do you desire out of the relationship is a key question to help identify the real issue. Also in the `before' phase, you are asked to master your emotions by considering not only `your story', but also by considering the other person's context and thus `their story' - are they really doing this because they want to fail with you? Probably not - they just have an entirely different perspective (their story) on the situation!

The `during' step requires that you confront with safety and stay with the facts; assuring the other party that mutual respect and mutual purpose are present. The `after' step requires agreement on an action plan and follow-up. Along the way, there are tools to avoid getting side-tracked, with ample examples of situations that may arise and suggestions for dealing with them. The book is recommended for anyone interested in improving any of their many relationships, business or personal.

5 out of 5 stars Crucial Confrontations.......2007-06-27

A must read for supervisors and managers. With outstanding proven approaches to knowing what you want from a conversaton, what the other wants, and watching out for the relationship. Found it useful at work as a reference book, plus a great read for personal relationship communications as well. Would suggest reading Crucial Conversations first to really get the full view.

5 out of 5 stars My Beautiful Broken Shell.......2007-09-05

Encouragement to get through grief, remembering what we still have to live for, and recalling that grief is a part of this life. It comes, but the intensity will lessen, and we will be able to remember our lost one with love, joy and hope.

I received this as a gift from a dear friend in a time of crisis--it was very healing!

5 out of 5 stars My Beautiful Broken Shell.......2007-06-27

I treasure this book from a dear friend. It is realy about how beautiful a sea shell broken or perfect can be. A comparison of life, none of us are perfect, but each one is a beautiful person just like a broken sea shell.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2006-02-20

This book was given to me when my husband passed away. I read it and was comforted. However, it was not until I re-read it a year later, that I really understood it! Needless to say, i ordered several copies for my sons and friends who have lost partners. This book made me realize that it was ok to "be a broken shell".

5 out of 5 stars A unique way to express compassion.......2005-09-29

There are few books or cards that adequately express compassion to people who have endured or are experiencing tragic loss. This small, beautiful book offers genuine words that express the honesty of heartbreak as well as the hope of healing. I received it as a gift when a loved one died suddenly, and I have purchased several for friends who are struggling with grief. This book would also be appropriate for someone who has any type of loss, such as shattered hopes or expectations.
