Book Description

Consisting of a number of well-known open source products, JBoss is more a family of interrelated services than a single monolithic application. But, as with any tool that's as feature-rich as JBoss, there are number of pitfalls and complexities, too.

Most developers struggle with the same issues when deploying J2EE applications on JBoss: they have trouble getting the many J2EE and JBoss deployment descriptors to work together; they have difficulty finding out how to get started; their projects don't have a packaging and deployment strategy that grows with the application; or, they find the Class Loaders confusing and don't know how to use them, which can cause problems.

JBoss at Work: A Practical Guide helps developers overcome these challenges. As you work through the book, you'll build a project using extensive code examples. You'll delve into all the major facets of J2EE application deployment on JBoss, including JSPs, Servlets, EJBs, JMS, JNDI, web services, JavaMail, JDBC, and Hibernate. With the help of this book, you'll:

Written for Java developers who want to use JBoss on their projects, the book covers the gamut of deploying J2EE technologies on JBoss, providing a brief survey of each subject aimed at the working professional with limited time.

If you're one of the legions of developers who have decided to give JBoss a try, then JBoss at Work: A Practical Guide is your next logical purchase. It'll show you in plain language how to use the fastest growing open source tool in the industry today. If you've worked with JBoss before, this book will get you up to speed on JBoss 4, JBoss WS (web services), and Hibernate 3.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Developer book for starters to JBOSS.......2007-08-15

Its a great book if you have just started your development with JBOSS 4. It is easy to read from a developer/deployment perspective and also delves into how to automate the deployment descriptors and deploy into JBOSS. Covers most of the common J2ee/Web applications using hibernate and Ant. Probably needs upgrading to JBOSS 5 but is great if your current development is in JBOSS 4.

4 out of 5 stars Great learning tool.......2007-06-27

I am most of the way through this book and so far, it's been extremely helpful and informative. It breaks all the steps down one by one and takes you from a simple Hello-World type app, to a more complicated enterprise application. A great read all-around.

4 out of 5 stars Good ground up walkthru.......2007-03-23

I found JBoss at Work to be a great guide that takes you through the basic JBoss setup and configuration. Its perfect for someone who wants to get an overview of the process and understanding of how JBoss works, but doesnt want to take the time to become an expert. It serves well as a guide on understanding J2EE general development and also highlights the JBoss specifics when appropriate.
The only downside for me was the tedious review of the J2EE XML configs. I would have preferred to see just the XDoclet code and not the additional XML that it generates. Use that time to focus on WHAT config files are necessary opposed to what actually gets generated and goes into them. Its beyond the scope of the book to go into all the XML syntax in the configs so its not worthwhile to try and make the reader understand this. Again, a little extra is not so bad, but it does fill a good portion of the book with something I believe could have been left out or supplemented with a better review of what each config file does and when to use them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Peer into JBoss and J2EE.......2007-03-22

As many O'Reilly publications, this book provides an excellent, easy read for the topic being covered. Examples are simple enough for a "let's just get it working" for the core technologies (as stated as the goal of the book) while still providing a fairly thorough insight into each of the J2EE technologies/concepts covered.

Highly recommended for anyone who has a base understanding of JBoss/J2EE and wants to start exposing themselves to new things as well as beginners just starting out with the JBoss/J2EE world.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of a broad spectrum of products.......2007-03-19

"JBoss at Work" is a great overview of a broad spectrum of product technologies. It spends enough time on each to get them working and to provide a feel for their value, customizability, and flexibility. Examples are well-presented and contain discussion about how they work and are configured for multiple populare application environments, where appropriate. It has excellent background and history for each technology, popular alternatives, and a discussion about why the author preferred this particular technology. In other words, the authors provide more than just the bare mention included in many "survey" books. There is enough to get all of them working, and working together as a cohesive set. It does not, however, provide a lot of detail on each one.

This was perfect for my needs -- to provide a strong enough introduction for me to understand into which technologies I wanted to delve deeper, and enough contact with each of them to allow me to evaluate competing technologies in their space.

Book Description

The search for clean, renewable energy sources has yielded enormous growth and new developments in these technologies in a few short years, driving down costs and encouraging utilities in many nations, both developed and developing, to add and expand wind and solar power capacity. The first, best-selling edition of Wind and Solar Power Systems provided the most complete and modern treatment of renewable energy. This second edition continues the tradition by offering updated and expanded coverage of this growing field. The book begins with individual sections devoted to wind power and solar photovoltaic technologies, their engineering fundamentals, conversion characteristics, operational considerations to maximize output, and emerging trends. The discussion of wind power includes the theory of induction machine performance and operation as well as generator speed control, while the solar PV section includes array design, environmental variables, and sun-tracking methods. This edition includes two chapters devoted to new and specialized technologies. The third section explores large-scale energy storage technologies, overall electrical system performance, and total plant economy while the final section explores ancillary power systems derived from the sun. Focusing on the complete system rather than on a single component, Wind and Solar Power Systems: Design, Analysis, and Operation, Second Edition offers the most comprehensive reference to all aspects of modern renewable energy systems.

Book Description

Although researchers have long been aware that the species-typical architecture of the human mind is the product of our evolutionary history, it has only been in the last three decades that advances in such fields as evolutionary biology, cognitive psychology, and paleoanthropology have made the fact of our evolution illuminating. Converging findings from a variety of disciplines are leading to the emergence of a fundamentally new view of the human mind, and with it a new framework for the behavioral and social sciences. First, with the advent of the cognitive revolution, human nature can finally be defined precisely as the set of universal, species-typical information-processing programs that operate beneath the surface of expressed cultural variability. Second, this collection of cognitive programs evolved in the Pleistocene to solve the adaptive problems regularly faced by our hunter-gatherer ancestors--problems such as mate selection, language acquisition, cooperation, and sexual infidelity. Consequently, the traditional view of the mind as a general-purpose computer, tabula rasa, or passive recipient of culture is being replaced by the view that the mind resembles an intricate network of functionally specialized computers, each of which imposes contentful structure on human mental organization and culture. The Adapted Mind explores this new approach--evolutionary psychology--and its implications for a new view of culture.

4 out of 5 stars An important introduction to evolutionary psychology.......2007-03-17

This is one of the earliest texts in the field called Evolutionary Psychology (EP). This specialization evolved from what Edward O. Wilson termed "Sociobiology" in the mid-1970s. EP applies the logic of sociobiology to human psychology. That is, how has natural selection shaped how humans think and make decisions? As editors Leda Cosmides, John Tooby, and Jerome Barkow put it (page 7): "Evolutionary psychology is psychology informed by the fact that the inherited architecture of the human mind is the product of the evolutionary process." The book, in their conceptualization, has two goals (page 3): "The first is to introduce the newly crystallizing field of evolutionary psychology to a wider audience. . .The second goal of this volume is to clarify how this new field. . .supplies the necessary connection between evolutionary biology and the complex, irreducible social and cultural phenomena studied by anthropologists, economists, and historians."

They locate their perspective by juxtaposing evolutionary psychology with what the term "the standard social scientific model." The chapter by Tooby and Cosmides (Chapter 1) outlines this model in much more detail.
As we know, the SSSM insists that, for all practical purposes, human nature - and thus human behavior - is shaped by culture. Put less laconically, the SSSM rests on three cardinal tenets - two of them explicit, the third usually implicit. These are: (1) that humans have no innate behavioral tendencies; (2) that, consequently, human nature is solely the product of learning and socialization (in short, of "nurture"); from which it follows (3) that human nature (and consequently human behavior) is essentially quite malleable (my rendering of the perspective). Of course, evolutionary psychology moves in a different direction, emphasizing the effects of the evolutionary process on human behavior and thinking.

This edited volume includes a series of chapters exploring different aspects of human behavior. The section titles illustrate the variety of topics covered: Section II focuses on cooperation and social exchange, noting that these have evolutionary bases; III examines the psychology of mating and sex; IV looks at parental care and children; V considers perception and language as evolutionary adaptations; VI takes a look at environmental aesthetics (such as evolved responses to landscapes); VII has only one chapter--looking at the evolution of psychodynamic mechanisms. The volume closes with an essay by Jerome Barkow.

Not all readers will be convinced by the arguments raised in this volume. However, it serves an important purpose by unapologetically claiming that we cannot understand much of human psychology (and other social behaviors) without considering human evolution. Indeed, it is hard to complain about this overarching perspective. However, readers may well dispute specific applications of the perspective. In the end, this is a rich volume and will prod the reader to think differently about "human nature."

5 out of 5 stars Evolution from Several Vantages.......2002-06-10

This book is a massive tome on evolutionary factors that influence human behavior. It begins with clarification of the kind of Darwinism the authors appeal to, so that everyone is on the same page, and considers the general psychological foundations of Darwinism on culture.

The book then moves on to discuss cognitive adaptations for social exchange, citing human and non-human examples. The book also includes the evolutionary psychology of mating and sex, examining preferences for mate selection and competition, mechanisms for sexual attraction, and the evolutionary use of women as chattel (something any Old Testament and Quran reader can relate to).

A significant portion of the book is devoted to parental care and children, examining how pregnancy sickness, patterns between twins, maternal-infant vocalizations, and child play in the form of chasing each other are all evolutionary mechanisms that continue to be featured.

Steven Pinker adds an essay on natural language and natural selection; Roger Shepard contributes an essay on the man's perceptual adaptation to the natural world; both of which demonstrate the interconnectedness between perception, language, and adaptation.

The book concludes with some of its most esoteric issues: environmental aesthetics, intrapsychic processes, and the theoretical implications of culural phenomena.

The whole book, while not necessarily over-academic, is ultimately dense reading. Most of the concepts and conceptualizations require mental work to apprehend, while the statistics and empirical evidence are clearly described. While drawing from many disparate areas of evolutionary biology, all the essays find their ultimate significance in how the mind, in particular, has adapted to environmental forces. A demanding, but facinating, read.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh start.......2000-04-26

The argument - and it is an argument - is that human behaviour is strongly influenced by evolved psychological mechanisms, and that those mechanisms are numerous and specific, rather than just one general learning mechanism - ie a human baby comes with an installed operating system and quite a lot of free software, and is definitely not a blank slate. What makes the argument persuasive is the attempt to import the scientific method - hypotheses falsifiable by experiment - to an area previously characterised by mumbojumbo and pseudoscience. Not all the attempts are successful, but as they say it's a start. 100 years late (for psychology) it is saying (a) the brain is an organ so it must have evolved too - let's think about it in a Darwinian fashion and (b) let's try to make pyschology a science not a humanity. It is potentially very offensive to existing psychology practitioners, because it implies that most existing psychologists are witch doctors. It is also very offensive to large bodies of public policy wonks (let's not beat about the bush here - in American speak this book is very offensive to liberal Democrats), essentially saying that most of the "science" behind social and educational policy has no foundation. And because it is polemical - it is shooting at a century of vested interests after all - it overstates its case in some places, although the writers are usually very careful to stress that while behavioural programmes may be partly pre installed, behaviour itself is not hardwired.

It was the start for me of looking at the way we think in a completely different light and led me to later, more detailed, more balanced statements of the case.

It is pretty hard going in places, particularly as they do rather tiresomely go out of their way trying to avoid giving direct offence, but they're not fooling anyone (not mss67 for a start.)But in reality they are yelling that the Emperor ("learning/nurture is all") has no clothes. For all its faults it's the book that has most influenced my thinking in the last 10 years, and definitely a five star performance.

5 out of 5 stars Great work.......2000-03-22

Finally, a branch of psychology which does not use the standard psycho-babble which distorted our views of human-kind in the 20th century.

4 out of 5 stars More Tooby & Cosmides, please.......2000-02-07

I was prompted to respond by the review from the individual in Virginia. He or she didn't like the Tooby & Cosmides chapters whereas I feel they were by far the most interesting chapters in the book. Reading their long essay (Chapter 2)is one of the best favors psychologists can do for themselves. Being a psychology major, I know that I was often confused about psychology before reading it, but their combination of cognitive psychology with evolutionary biology finally gave me an idea of where psychology should be going in the future. If only social psychologists and domain-general cognitive psychologists would read it, their research and approach might not be so sterile and boring. My only regret is that the book contained some chapters that were not as strong as the early chapters, but the importance of the good chapters greatly outweighs any weaknesses in the other ones.

3 out of 5 stars excellent starting point, but use with care.......2004-07-16

Fuel cells is a very difficult topic to write about because of the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. I am using the book to learn about Fuel Cells myself and my feelings are mixed. While this book is an excellent starting point, there are some over simplifications and errors. As a Mechanical engineer, some descriptions in the text made me cringe. Watch out for errors in some equations.

Excellent resource for someone with a technical background and general interest in fuel cells. For more serious users, recommend using in conjunction with maybe the DOE fuel cell handbook available from NETL or from OSTI.GOV

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2003-02-04

When I read this book, I read it to find out and explore this new idea of fuel cells. I was amazed by how it told me all of its benfits and how much more efficient the fuel cell powered cars truly are, and how much more environmentally friendly they are. This book explained the enitre concept of fuel cells to me, without confusing me. It explained every new term and if there is anyone who is interested in fuel cells, tis is definitely the book to read!

5 out of 5 stars A great starting point.......2001-12-19

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wide breadth of subject........2007-01-20

This text covers the many aspects of distribution planning with which engineers are faced. The text will be very helpful to engineers new to distribution planning as well as to those who have been working in the field for some time. The author helps the engineer understand how to quantify many of the variables which influence load growth, system upgrades, and customer expectations.

This book however, is not for the weak hearted. This is a HUGE text and will take some time for even the most diligent reader to complete. But, having looked at earlier versions by the author under the ABB publications in the mid-90's, this version is improved.

5 out of 5 stars Should be called the "Distribution Planning Bible".......2002-05-24

Amazingly, this book succeeds in covering all of the major topics related to distribution planning: demand, criteria, relia iblity, economics, equipment sizing, feeder layout, substations, service level, forecasting, tools, and much more. It even ties all of these subjects together in three ways with chapters on the overall T&D system, the distribution planning process, and industry paridigms.

There is so much to learn from this book. In addition serving as a self-instruction guide, it is also filled with reference material, tons of practical advise, and innumerable insights that challenge common assumptions. This book will become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on a Difficult Subject.......2000-04-21

Although titled "Distribution" this book really refers to the entire transmission-substation-distribution system. This book is extremely well organized and serves as both a reference book and a tutorial for self study. As a reference, it has a lengthy index and good sensible organization of topics, so it is easy to jump right to the item desired. As a tutorial it really shines due to its organization and a simple, direct style of writing. The book's first few chapters review basics such as electric load, equipment, economics, reliability, and so forth. Each such chapter builds rather linearly in detail, and shows how its topics interrelate to the others. Examples are given frequently, using real-world problems and numbers. The rest of the book then examines power delivery systems in a bottom up approach. the author begins with line segments and transformer economics and selection, and shows progressively how element are combined into feeder circuits, into groups of feeders, into sets of groups to form a substation area, and so forth, up to the entire system. At each level, the various tradeoffs in design and cost are examined, and it is shown how the system is optimized and how that optimization impacts other levels of the system. The explanations of feeder layout and configuration tradeoffs, and how to maximize benefit and use flexibility of options in design, are by far the most thorough I've ever seen. There are many case studies and solved problems shown, all of which use real utility system situations and make excellent learning examples. The book is relatively easy to read considering the depth of coverage, but there is a tremendous number of factors and issues that are covered, making it slow learning. However, nowhere else have I seen distribution covered in nearly as much detail or so broadly with respect to performance and cost. Overall, this the most useful book I have seen on distribution planning or systems design.

1 out of 5 stars The Unreal Thing.......2006-11-23

David Horowitz and Peter Collier would love for the people that read this book to consider nothing outside of their loathsome view of the 60's. And if judged by the reader reviews they have found their partisans.

The New Left as archfiend to Democracy is employed as a synecdoche in H&C's tireless effort to deconstruct the era. Readers that impute H&C's subjective views are in lockstep with present day efforts by the neo con's to annul the extraordinary social achievements of the 60's generation.

This book's transparent viewpoint is another lop sided, subjective hack job by Horowitz who is still trying to prove to his parents that they were wrong and he is right (pun intended).

5 out of 5 stars Reconciliation With Myself.......2006-02-28

I graduated HS in '64 and attended college during the late 60s. I sood on the side lines in awe of the convulsions in the country. You could not be a 60s product without having some reverence for the committment of the radicals even if you had reservations about their cause.
I saw great things coming by the upheavel in the area of civil rights behind ML King, so I became disposed to believe that other revolutionaries probably possessed the same admirable goals and ambitions for the country. Yet when I looked around I didn't see anything really bad. I saw democracy and open debate, and an unpopular war. (Can any war really be popular even if it is necessary?) I was made to feel guilty about my lack of committment to upheavel and revolution even when my friends were going off to war.
This book, especially because it was written by insiders in the radical movement, has finely lifted that guilt. Had the radicals really achieved their goals, a book such as this would have never been written, and to me that is the strength of our democratic society.
This book will head my gift list for a long time to my friends and family. Yesterday I had to purchase a book for a family friend who was heading overseas to fight the war in Afganistan. I had to find it in the Politics section. Clearly this deserves the status of History. I'm sure this book will inspire him with the knowledge of what he is really fighting for and how vigilant we all must be, whether at home or abroad, all the time, not just during times of open assult on our country.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-09-29

I was growing up in California while this was all going on and somehow I was pretty much oblivious. David Horowitz and Peter Collier are remarkable authors and I am so glad to have had the opportunity to read this book. Why isn't it used as a history text in highschools? The drivel that's out there dispensed in all it's liberal bias glory is perverse in it's politically correctness. I just hate it when history is distorted so that we can pretend things happened to acommodate feminist or liberal rhetoric. After reading this book (and others by these authors)I have a deeper understanding of modern US history and appreciate the candor with which the books are written.

5 out of 5 stars The Dissillusionment of the Flower child.......2004-09-08

So many people from that generation have taught in our Universities and Public Schools "the 60's was an era when Peace not war was the goal". This book clearly details how that notion was blown adrift by the radical, hostile, and hedonistic lifestyles many people "in the Revolution" led during that time. After they tore down our institutions (belief in God) and tried to trash our culture(Democracy), they faded into the background. And even now as they reach their twilight years of old age, even now, they look back on what they did and say, "Hmmm maybe that time was a little excessive"(Jane Fonda). Read this book and it will fill in the "blanks" for you as to why the 70's happened and we as a people began to doubt ourselves. And why finally in 1980, Ronald Reagan was swept into office amidst a political backlash against the radical left not seen in this country since the 1950's.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Sixties........2004-07-29

These essays are priceless and they tell a tale that many have never heard. We are presented with the personal impacts of radicalism on human relationships and also on communities that sponsor it. Progressivism and its sympathizers practically imploded the city of Berkeley and still exert a noxious influence upon that locality today. The life of Fay Stender, a lawyer/groupie of the Black Panthers, teaches the reader just how much ideological blindness can bring a person down. The Weatherman Underground is given its own (pathetic) chapter length treatment. Believe me, you'll be horrified by the specifics of their pseudo-struggle and laugh when you discover that they viewed sex as being an ideological statement. The anti-Americanism of the New Left has long been denied but Horowitz and Collier reveal much about them that has been hidden by the sixties. If you're appalled by what the country's become, read this back and learn the causation of our cultural decline.

Book Description

Years have passed since the end of the War of the Lance. The people of Ansalon have rebuilt their lives, their houses, their families. The Companions of the Lance, too, have returned to their homes, raising children and putting the days of their heroic deeds behind them.

But peace on Krynn comes at a price. The forces of darkness are ever vigilant, searching for ways to erode the balance of power and take control. When subtle changes begin to permeate the fragile peace, new lives are drawn into the web of fate woven around all the races. The time has come to pass the sword -- or the staff -- to the children of the Lance.

They are the Second Generation.

An all-new repackaged paperback edition of a classic Dragonlance novel.

This book of five novellas bridges the gap between the Chronicles and Legends trilogies and Dragons of Summer Flame. While detailing their adventures, The Second Generation also sets up key events and characters in future Dragonlance novels.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Dragonlance fans!.......2007-09-25

Ive read many of Weis and Hickman Dragonlance novels. I fell in love with the world of Kryn instantly. Although this book is made up of short stories about the the hero's of the lance children, each story is well written. Some stories do have a some what abrupt end which leads you to wonder what will become of the characters in the future books, but thats all part of Weis and Hickmans massive plot weaving style. The focus of the stories seem to be around Caramons kids, but there are 2 others that were quite a shock to me....sorry no spoiler here...
This book should NOT be read as a first introduction into the world of Dragonlance but a must for DL readers and fans.

3 out of 5 stars Good for new readers to the DL setting who want to limit their spending........2007-07-20

Nearly all of the stories here are reprinted from the "Tales" and "Tales II" trilogies. As these have recently been reprinted (together as a six-book series instead of 2 trilogies) the only reason to get this book is to get the key stories that are pivotal to the core storyline.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly different.......2007-01-05

A bunch of short stories based on the Dragonlance characters of MW and TH. Some were surprising and they filled in a good deal of gaps.

4 out of 5 stars Ah.. the wonders of Krynn.......2005-10-06

If you liked the Core books set before this one - then there is no doubt you will enjoy it. It is set as 'short stories' to just get a few new points across. I enjoyed every part of it - and was breathed a sigh of relief after being away from Krynn for as long as I have. Although Tas does not appear in this book - he does in the next, but the book is certainly not hurting without my fav. character doing everything he can do to 'mess' things up.

I definetly recommend it to anyone who has started this series and found it as wonderful as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Second Generation.......2005-08-13

The book was as good as the first 2 trilogies. The seller was very fast with delivery, especially because it was overseas. Great service, wonderful book!!

    Book Description

Millions thrilled to Kenneth Johnson's hugely popular mini-series "V," an action filled drama of alien invasion, a TV event that was also a number one bestselling novel. Now, in a new novel based on the sequel miniseries currently being developed for TV, the tension between The Visitors and Earth's human inhabitants has reached a boiling point.

The reptilian Visitors, who cleverly portray themselves as Earth's protectors, are anything but. Our oceans are being drained in order to fuel the aliens' motherships, and our scientists are treated like wanted criminals. And they have pods of preserved humans destined for even more sinister purposes.

But hope is not lost. A small, yet resourceful Resistance risks everything to undermine the Visitors' stranglehold on Earth's people. Despite their heroic efforts, without more help they will be crushed by the Visitors and their human militia. Just when Earth's doom seems inevitable, agents of an alien civilization from another planet arrive in answer to humanity's desperate call for help. But can these other aliens be trusted? Or might we defeat one alien overlord, only to be delivered into the hands of another, equally as oppressive?

Time is running out for the Resistance, for when the Visitors' Leader arrives, the aliens will complete their mission on Earth, with devastating consequences for all life on the planet.
