Book Description
A text that offers clear, concise, and practical real world treatment of key financial management topics with the assumption readers have little knowledge of financial concepts. Advanced math is eliminated from the theory sections and everyday math is geared towards making the material useful yet understandable, supported by numerous worked-out examples and graphical and intuitive presentations of math where appropriate. Written by a former CFO, the book offers practical, real-world discussion of key topics, including cross-functional coverage of the agendas and biases decision-makers across the firm may bring to a financial proposal.

Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off, and Keep Moving Forward!.......2007-01-04
Was a tad surprised about the pot smoking incidents, but it took some hutsvah (spelling?) to put it down in the book. With that said, this is great reading from 1987. Obviously, Barry did NOT kill off any brain cells with the pot, or, if he did, he certainly had many extra ones to play with. I bought this book because I wanted to know more about my absolutely FAVORITE singer. It was hard to put it down at night but I HAD to sleep. Lemme start by saying that I do not generally care to read bios, but this was written by the big Mr. Barry himself, so it's not somebody making up stuff just to sell a book. The ONLY bios I have read have been that of Barry and of Chuck Norris. (I was impressed by Chuck and the values he attempted to portray on Walker, Texas Ranger.)
As is consistent with Barry, he begins the book thanking everyone who helped him for their brutal honesty (obviously in helping him remember details) and helping him in any way with this book-writing venture, which took him over 3 years. He states, "...I want to tell you the story of an average guy on the way to the rest of his life...". (and that about says it.)
The book is very well written, and is done in such a way that it makes you feel that you are sitting across the kitchen table chatting with him over a couple of pots of coffee. It's interesting, witty, simple, and if it's not brutally honest, then he's got me fooled. I found it far more interesting than I had anticipated. Like I said, hard to put down.
It begins with his simple childhood in Brooklyn and discusses his background, family, his failed marriage, beginnings of his career, girlfriends, struggles of the career, challenges, his work at the NYC Bathhouse, alone and with Bette Midler, and so on. He never planned to be a singer, but it sure must have been in the stars. Some of the past must have been painful to write about, but writing about it was probably a type of therapy in itself.
This is a story of determination and perseverence, of getting knocked down and getting back up and going on. It's about putting fears and insecurities aside and having the guts to go forward and keep going. It's about doing a little bullcrapping, too. It's also about having an "I CAN" attitude, which I greatly admire in anyone, along with perseverance. Barry enjoyed the music world and he threw himself into it and got more than he ever expected. This bio is an average man's climb from a poor kid to a superstar, but then, is Barry REALLY average? I think not. "Average" people give up. Average/normal is overrated.
I'm ready for the sequel anytime, Barry! This was FANTASTIC and well worth reading. I LOVED it!!!
Great Entertainer, Superb Musician.......2006-01-25
Wow, I cannot believe it's been 8 years since I read this great book and reviewed it online @ Amazon. I have since read and re-read this book so many times, I've practically memorised the words - but they remain as touching and inspiring as ever. I laugh and cry each time I read it. My respect for him as an entertainer and a person grows each time I read the book.
Barry's words have helped me in my affirmation of my own self worth during the low times and in celebration of the highs - just as all his songs have done all these years. Here's one true blue fan who is looking forward to the next autobiographical update from the man himself.
It's a wonder my book is still in mint condition!!! but I am determined to treasure this book for always. :-)
What a pleasure!.......2004-06-16
Mr. Manilow is a great inspiration.
I loved this book.
It's sincere, funny, interesting and sad all at the same time.
Not only does this man write beautiful music, he sure knows how to write a book too!
If your a fan I would say it's a MUST read.
Barry speaks his mind and i agree with him.......2004-04-28
in this book, which i finally NOW have, i was expecting to read a dark and gloomy rise to fame but there wasn't any. Manilow's fame came by accident and the pressures of the business and the reluctance to accept the fame, in the beginning, is a refreshing story. Barry talks about his early musical career in the '60s before being pushed into the spotlight by Clive Davis. all facets of Barry's career is talked about in here. there's a chapter called "Read 'Em and Weep", which was the title of his huge AC #1 hit in 1984. The story part of the book ends during the "Paradise Café" album in 1984 but the discography in the back includes his 1985 and 1986 material. the pictures contained in this book are rare...you see Barry with black hair, combed to the side, during his days with CBS prior to hooking up with Bette Middler. there's also a picture of Barry on a beach with no shirt on...there's another one where he has a small beard! if anything, this book helps paint the picture of Barry Manilow. It allows people who really never followed his career in-depth to know how the off-stage "barry" was always at odds with the on-stage "BARRY" throughout much of his biggest years. There's also chapters that talk about the commercial aspect of music and the heart-felt aspect of music and why Manilow's songs were poignant yet had a commercial "sound" to them. This is a complex story of a man living the life of a super-star. Being a writer, Barry was also stunned whenever a song he never co-wrote would become a hit for him. "I Write the Songs" wasn't written by Barry...but neither was a few other big songs like "Mandy", "Looks Like We Made It", or "Read 'Em and Weep"...Barry said that it took years before he could accept their success. Barry has changed a lot of his personal opinions since the mid '80s. Nowadays whenever he does a CD he's performing "outside songs", as he calls them, even more than his own material, which wouldn't have happened in his past. above all else, this book shows that "Barry Manilow" is a human and has feelings, too. no artist should ever have to go through what he went through; and all he ever wanted was to spread joy and happiness through his music and even today he's still causing happiness with his style of pop music.
Sweet Life.......2003-06-16
I enjoyed reading every page of Barry's Sweet Life book and all the pictures inside the book, are very good.
Until I started reading Barry's book for the very first time, I never knew about his pot smoking days(Bad Barry!). :-O
Otherwise, it's a very interesting book to read!

At the center of this dark and compelling tale is Rowan Mayfair, queen of the coven, who must flee from the darkly brutal, yet irresistable demon known as Lasher. With a dreamlike power, this wickedly seductive entity draws us through twilight paths, telling a chilling and hypnotic story of spiritual aspiration and passion.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Another heaping helping of Mayfair witches, spirits, and incest. Rowan has vanished, and a precocious teenaged Mayfair witch appears in this book. She goes after Rowan's husband, and Lasher kidnaps her and gets her pregnant multiple times, finally resulting in a child.
Some scientific investigating shows Rowan is a freak, so Lasher's plan to pump his seed into all the Mayfair witches may not do much, as the reason he was successful with Rowan was because of her mutant nature.
Not a lot of point to this, I think.
Consistent Great Writing.......2007-08-03
Another great book in the vampire series. Rice doesn't disappoint you. The story flows, the descriptions of the places and people are vivid in your imagination. No boring parts. What more could you want from a book? Very entertaining and highly recommended.
Splendid.......2007-05-10
This is my favorite book from the Mayfair series. I loved this book.
All right, but what was with the Bible thumping?.......2007-01-24
I loved The Witching Hour, the first book in the trilogy, so I had high expectations for this one. For the most part, they were met, but there were a few problems, the first and foremost being Lasher's story. He spends almost 100 pages promoting Catholocism, and defaming Protestants. I'm neither, but it still offended me that the author used her character as a mouthpiece for her own religious beliefs. Mona, the new character on the scene, was quite interesting (for the first half, I thought she was a sociopath). All in all, three stars.
Tedious. Rambling........2006-07-29
This book reads like a first draft in need of EXTENSIVE editing. I finally threw in the towel after 150 pages.
Book Description
All over the country, kids are picking up knitting needles and wildly colorful yarns to make really cool clothes and other fabulous stuff--from cozy chenille scarves to snuggly shawls, funky rag bags to furry tank tops, whimsical brimmed hats to classy cardigans. Whether on their own or together with friends in after-school clubs, recreation centers, or even yarn shops, these kids are discovering that knitting is more than learning basic stitches and following pattern directions.
Knitting is a way to get exactly what they want to own, and it is also a fun way to relax and hang out, a way to surprise a friend with a handmade sweet sixteen present, a way to discover the creative "me" in themselves.
Teen Knitting Club shows them how they can do it all--from learning the basics to forming knitting clubs of their own. Firsthand stories and tips from scores of teens both advise and encourage teens, while lively four-color photographs of their handiwork show what can be done with just a little practice.
Cool kids everywhere will be saying, "Move over, Grandma," and joining in this creative and rewarding pastime.

cute book.......2007-01-05
I bought this for my 12 year old niece. I honestly didn't know what to rate it because I didn't read through it extensively, but it did have lots of cute patterns. I noticed that there was a section too for shorter projects, great for long trips, etc. There was also a section about starting your own knitting club.
THE intro knitting book to own!.......2007-01-04
I teach a lot of kids and adults to knit and this is the first book I have found that has it all: clear, accurate how-to information; patterns for things you will actually WEAR after you knit them; well-designed format which makes the book easy to navigate. My favorite section is a list of the top 10 most common knitting mistakes and how to repair them. The only criticism I have of this book is the title. I recommend this book for every novice knitter, from eight years of age on up.
Great Basics.......2006-11-09
I liked this book, out of a lot of beginning knitting books, because it shows guys as well as girls knitting. And the hat patterns are the best. Simple, clear instructions, and directions on how to substitute yarns. I agree with the earlier poster about the lack of extended sizing but I don't think that the sweaters are the strength of this book - it's the hats and scarves!
One Of the Best!.......2006-06-20
I love this book! Unlike all the other knitting books I've read, this one doesn't claim to be easy, it actally is! I've never made a hat before because it's been too intimadating, but this book really simplafies all things. I believe it's good for beginers, but might be a little boaring for kniters who have been knitting for a long time.
You don't have to be a teen..........2006-02-17
This book is Great! It is easy to read and understand. It has some simple but trendy patterns, too. All the basics of knitting wrapped up in easy to use instructions. You don't have to be a teen to use it. I bought it for my granddaughter but am using myself, too.

Very Informative.......2007-01-10
Great book, really delves deep into the psyche of people with this disorder and how it is interlinked with borderline personality disorders and depression. This book also has a excellent diasgnostic survey for clients suspected of this disorder. Certain criteria have to be met and law enforcement notified before a diagnosis can be made, it is a very difficult disorder to diagnosis, but this book sheds some new light.
A reader from the Deep South.......2005-12-12
I was knowledgeable about Munchausen by proxy before I read this book, but it shed a whole new light on the subject for me. It is clearly the definitive reference in the field. It is readable and filled with summaries and charts that facilitate understanding and practical application. It is not to be missed for any professionals involved in the protection of children.
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.......2004-08-06
A distressing look into how far will some people go to get attention. Through detailed case studies and analysis, the authors take readers into the lives and minds of people whose obsessive craving for attention compels them to fake illness, sometimes to the point of death.

THEY REALLY DO TEACH YOU..........2006-10-25
I connected with this book. She describes her own feelings and emotional bonding that I too have felt. I was raised on a ranch with two grandparents whose ideas about animals conflicted so I saw both sides and can understand more than many about animal "energy" Their Energy is everywhere and we all feel it all of the time, most not paying attention to it because it is so common a feeling.
I grew up around more animals than humans and the encounter with kids that I went to school with made me withdraw from them. I was badly pigeon-toed from having my hips dislocated when I was born and the teasing was never ending so I avoided my classmates as much as possible, and I could not wait to get home each day to hug my dog who was always there for me. Even in the bitter cold of winter he was waiting at the school bus stop....
I am not telling this story to get sympathy, I do not need it. I just want you to understand why I am passionate about this book... This Is On The Cover:
" We can find in the eyes of an animal a whole new world. In their liquid depths lies the capacity to trust, be strong, to face fear, to heal and to find love. They see us at our best, without pretense or propriety. And in return for our love and Respect, they give us the gift of ourselves-the true reflection of our Souls..."
.... Each of my animals has taught me something that has stayed with me even after they had to move forward to another realm....
They have taught me that I can give love and it is returned without question. I have learned to be calm because anger hurts and causes fear. They have taught me deformities are something you can live with by my watching them and seeing that their lives go on.
...I have learned compassion does NOT come with a price. I have learned to accept myself as I am and not worry about it. I have learned about a love that goes deep and is non-judging.....
I HAVE SEEN SELF-sacrifice first hand when my little Rat Terrier stood between me and an aggressive much larger dog. He would have died to protect me if he had no other choice.
My Soul belongs to the Animal world.
This book made me realize that I am just an animal........1999-03-11
This book was wonderful and inspirational, a true example of how to live your life as a member of the animal kingdom!
Full of enlightening stories.......1998-08-10
Margot Lasher is a wonderful story teller and and like most good story tellers, she takes us from considering the personal and mundane to glimpsing a better understanding of the universal. This book reinforces the deep, enriching and enlightening connection we humans have - if we allow it - with all living creatures. It encourages us to recognize key experiences where animals have entered our lives to reach us, to heal us, maybe to ask for help from us. It is a very moving book which can send us into the world with heightened awareness of our fellow creatures.

I love you, Micah.......2002-07-01
I know its just a book, but there's no other way to explain what Micah does other than calling it magic. Just give the book a chance and I promise you will experience the same magic that I have felt through Micah's eloquent writing. However, while the majority of the tricks are simple and, to be honest, somewhat worthless, there is one that I found simply mind-altering. You can see for yourself, but the trick where you disappear and end up in the closet is truly astonishing. I still haven't left.
the best close-up magic book for a beginner.......2002-03-05
The tricks here, especially the card tricks, are very good and very classic, and (amazingly) to not require advanced manipulation techniques. A beginner can learn all of them in a few days by following Micah's step-by-step instructions. This is -not- one of the usual run of close-up magic books which seem to randomly mix trivial self-working tricks and professional-level slights, usually with far from sufficient explanation and no orderly plan for learning.
This book won't make you an expert, but is definitely the very best one to get if you'd like to learn the basics. I hope it stays in print forever!
Get It, it full of great stuff for beginners.......1999-10-07
I used this book all the time when I was starting out. This was a refreshing breath of air from all the crap books I had bought prior. Buy It, it's worth the read. It outlines and shows you many sleights and great tricks you can do with them in a perfect blend of pictures and simple text.
You NEED this book if you are a beginner........1999-08-27
This book teaches professional quality trick in easy, understandable directions. I have seen the author perform these trick to live audiences with impressive results. I f you only buy one magic book this should be it.
It's Excellent for a beginner.......1999-06-06
It was the first book about magic in my magic library. It is really perfect for beginners, specially the cards chapter.
