Book Description

Discover the magic of The Malloreon–David Eddings’s acclaimed series, the sequel to his bestselling The Belgariad. Now the first three Malloreon books appear in a single volume, taking us on an epic quest across strange lands among gods, kings, sorcerers, and ordinary men. It is a gripping tale of two ancient warring destinies fighting a battle of good against evil.

Garion has slain the evil God Torak and is now the King of Riva. The prophecy has been fulfilled–or so it seems. For there is a dire warning, as a great evil brews in the East. Now Garion once again finds himself with the fate of the world resting on his shoulders. When Garion’s infant son is kidnapped by Zandramas, the Child of Dark, a great quest begins to rescue the child. Among those on the dangerous mission are Garion and his wife, Queen Ce’Nedra, and the immortal Belgarath the Sorcerer and his daughter, Polgara. They must make their way through the foul swamps of Nyissa, then into the lands of the Murgos. Along the way, they will face grave dangers–captivity, a horde of demons, a fatal plague–while Zandramas plots to use Garion’s son in a chilling ritual that will make the Dark Prophecy supreme. . .

Eddings writes mindless drivel, but it is ENTERTAINING mindless drivel - great for telling the world to go soak its head and just sitting back and having a good time.

5 out of 5 stars My most cherised series.......2007-07-26

Along with The Belgariad, the Malloreaon is probably my most beloved series of fantasy. I read all the books in the series over 10 years ago & to this day when I just need to escape, I find myself in this world. What David Eddings has crafted is every bit as beautiful as the Tolkien world, as magical as Harry Potter, and as rich as Anne Rice's history in the Vampire Chronicles. The characters are faceted & complex, the story line flows easily & I feel that I am a lucky reader to have found such a magical world!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-20

I've read alot of fantasy books from all kinds of authors. High fantasy and Epics and light fantasy. Usually in a series, the first 3 books are the best and if there are any after that they decline. I started out reading the Belgaraid knowing that this series was "light fantasy" and I didn't expect anything more than that. Then I get to the Mallorean and not only did it surprised me but it was actually better than the Belgaraid. Even the 3rd book in the Mallorean was better than the first. It seems that the author got better as he wrote and had a story to tell instead of stretching out a shorter story just to sell more books.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful series to read and reread.......2007-04-29

I first picked up Guardians of the West in the Library while I waited for my three children to finish their homework assignments. I couldn't put it down. Then I discovered there were five previous books. I immediately went and checked out Eddings first book The Pawn Of Prophecy and I was hooked. I was especially intrigued by their world and the numerous societies they developed to fill it. The background story was always intriguing. As Tolkin said about Bilbo's home, `There was always something more to discover'.
The landscape is rich in detail and their characters are warm and real. I enjoyed the surprises David and Leigh build into their stories. I was especially entertained by twist that the Murgo King and Silk were half brothers. While I love all the characters, I was fascinated by Polgara. I loved Beldin's character as a foil to Belgarath. I was surprised, happy, and saddened by his departure at the series finale. I have all the books in my collection and I have reread them many times. I go there to escape or find inspiration. This is truly one of the great works of fiction by a truly distinguished writing team.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Fantasy series since Tolkein!.......2007-03-31

In most cases, it seems, sequels tend to lose the punch and energy found in the origanal series. This is far from the truth when it comes to The Mallorean, by David Eddings. In his first series,The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit andThe Belgariad, Vol. 2 (Books 4 & 5): Castle of Wizardry, Enchanters' End Game Eddings spins a tale of good and evil that is worthy of J.R.R. Tolkein, without being a slavish copy of the masterwork of Fantasy fiction.

In The Mallorean, Eddings successfully creats a new story, resurecting most of the old characters. He creates a story that shows that even though everything seemed to come to a successfull conclusion, fate often needs to go full circle. His characters are immensely believable; the reluctant king of an island kingdom, Belgarion, who also is one of the world's most powerful wizards, to his Queen, headstrong and with a short-fused temper. Add in the Emperor of the largest land, who must forge a reluctant reliance with Belgarion to save his people, and the young child destined to take his place as the newest god. The story is wonderfully crafted to carry this tale. Add in the final bookThe Malloreon, Vol. 2 (Books 4 & 5): Sorceress of Darshiva, The Seeress of Kell to tie all the ends together and you have the perfect series in the world of Fantasy literature.

Every year or so, regardless of where I am in my reading list, I make the time to reread The Lord Of The Rings by Tolkein, Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorian, and the works of Raymond FeistMagician: Apprentice (Riftwar Saga), et al. These are, in my opinion, the benchmarks of all Fantasy. If you haven't read Eddings yet, do so at your earliest oppurtunity. You won't be dissappointed.

4 out of 5 stars The Saga Continues .. Or perhaps begins again........2006-11-22

Possible spoilers ahead

This book (and series) is the center of a lot of controversy among fantasy fans. The main issue hinges on whether this is a new and fresh series or if it's repetitious drek. The answer to this daunting question is... yes.

The problem here is that most people (I feel) don't get what Edding was trying to do here. In my reviews for the Belgariad books I said that these books resemble nothing so much as a fantasy Sitcom, or if not a sitcom, at least some kind of serialized TV. If you've ever watched a TV program in your life you will realize that ideas are recycled constantly, that's one of the reasons I picked a sitcom to compare it to. The fun comes not out of the plot but the characters' reactions to the plot and character is what Eddings does best.

Furthermore, Eddings made way for a second series in the Belgariad's last book by giving us ample signs. We met 'Zakath for the first time in the last quarter of the book for instance. There were also tantalizing hints as to Errand's identity. Enchanter's Endgame was clearly not meant to be the end of the story.

As to the repetition of ideas and settings and such, it should be said that even the characters are aware of the cyclical universe they are in more than (or just as much as) the reader is. They begin a conversation in this book that lasts through the whole series about things repeating. This awareness on the part of the characters adds a layer of what might be called metafiction, Not too much of course, this isn't Dhalgren or anything, but it's interesting that it's there.

As an individual book Guardians of the West has been criticised for its slow pacing. Those that close this book for that reason are missing out on an interesting concept. Think about this: We have Garion, the Godslayer, Lord of the West and all around megahero. We have followed him from birth to the killing of a god. Then we just leave him there.

I like the fact that we get to see this world in a state that we see very few fantasy worlds in: Peace. We get to see how the kingdom runs when there isn't a universe-ending crisis happening. This aspect of the novel hit me when my 10 year old cousin asked me what Darth Vader and the Emperor did in their spare time. I didn't even know how to answer that. That made me start thinking about whether fantasy worlds could actually function as a society during peace time or just fall apart. Now there IS a threat about in the land but it takes several years to manifest so we get a chance to stretch our legs a bit.

There is also the matter of Errand, he's going to become very important so we have to spend time with him and get to know him since, ut until now, hs's only said the word "Errand". While Errand is living with Polgara and Durnik in the vale Eddings gets to write more on one of his favorite themes which is family.

In short, read this book when you have time to take a book in at a leisurely pace. I will say that there's a bit too much Polgara and a bit too much C'Nedra in this book. I've said before that Eddings has trouble writing female characters and it stands out in this book a bit more than usual but that's my only criticism of the book.

Enjoy

I have found that you can't go wrong, when you read David
Ennings. I was caught up in the story from page 1. I just could not put it down, and when I finished I could not wait too read
the next book.

4 out of 5 stars Belgarion and Aldur.......2006-01-27

When Garion finds that his son was abducted, he was in a rage. He just solved his marriage problems but he now has to deal with another. Will he get his son back? Or will he have to wait? Read the series to find out. I would recommend the book to teenage fantasy lovers.

The first reason I would recommend this book is for its magical and mythical world. People can turn into animals. Not only that, they can cast very powerful spells and talk to animals. There are many different magical races. Each race have their own unique qualities.

The second reason I would recommend this book is for the different races and different lands. For example, Urgo's live in caves and their eyes are sensible to the sun. Another example is the Disciples of the God's. Each Disciple of Aldur has a tower but disciples of Torak get picked off one by one because they are descendants of an evil god.

The final reason I would recommend this book is because it has unique and cool names for people. One example of a unique name is Belgarath. Each name suits its character very well. They also tell you what they are. For example, Belgarion is a name fit for a king, and guess what, it is.

All teenage fantasy lovers will greatly enjoy this book. With each and every chapter, you get further interested and it gets harder to put the book down. I would also strongly recommend the rest of this wonderful series. Not only is this a series, it is a series in a series. These books keep their readers interested and faithful.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-01-05

This book is absolutely amazing! I would have to give it a five star rating (and that's rare). You keep the old characters, the old beginning, the old story, but you get a new destiny, a new destination, a new prophecy. You get to see people who you never saw in The Belgariad. You get to meat new characters that weren't in previous books. This book tells you a bit about Errand, and explains his thoughts and way of thinking. You'd be amazed how he thinks about things.
In the Belgariad, you had a prophecy. Either dark would triumph, of light would. Then they all thought it was over. But it wasn't. Light had won, but it had not triumphed. So now they need to find the Child of Dark, so (Bel)Garion, the Child of Light, can fight him. The prophecy said so.
In the Belgariad, Garion fought against Torak, one of the Gods. Torak was the Child of Dark. Now Zandramas is the Child of Dark, and Garion is going to have to fight him. But first he'll have to find him.
This time Garion has some idea of what he is supposed to do, but that isn't exactly helpful when some attempts to murder his wife, Ce'Nedra, when his son is kidnapped, or when he finds out that one of his companions will die on his journey.
I definitely recommend this book to fantasy lovers who don't like being over-loaded. I know that I loved this book and story from the moment I first opened it.

Eddings in the Malloreon shows again that he is one of fantasies greats!. The story is a ton of fun and I honestly cant think of anything wrong...well, I could have handled a tad more magic, but that's all.

The Malloreon isnt as good as the Belgareon, but it sure is worth it!

The Malloreon rates in my top 10 all time reads/series with the likes of Martin, Erikson and Tolkien.. Of course Eddings is much more fantasy "lite" than those guys, but he is a extremely fun author.

But then again - this is David Eddings, and this man IS the best! These books are absolutely fantastic - funny and well written. Everything David Eddings writes - Belgariad & Malloreon + prequels, Elinium and Tamuli - it's just perfect.

PS. I know I've written this once, but this time it'll link to my user-site.

5 out of 5 stars Typical Eddings: Awesome!.......1999-12-09

I have found myself reading and re-reading David Eddings work with great frequency. He writes about believable characters that bicker, pout, and get along much like my friends with whom I grew up. This is not Tolkein. The heroes aren't perfect. Belgarath is about as flawed as they come and is perfectly contrasted by his prudish daughter Polgara. Poor Belgarion is caught in the middle with the way he was raised and egged on by his little queen. This makes for a great comedy. The adventure is almost secondary to the story or as Alfred Hitchcock would put it, the McGuffin; a simple plot device.

David Eddings is one of the best writers there is.

5 out of 5 stars This is best!.......1999-12-03

This is better! then the 5 star Belgarion serie. The characters are so lively. It's more comedy than in a real comedy but also excitement. If you haven't read this do it!

But a tip read the Belgarion serie first. For you that have read the Belgarion I just want to say that this is more comedy and less excitement. But at my opinion it is better.

5 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Fantasy.......1999-11-08

If you enjoy Fantasy, you will love both the Belgariad and the Mallorian. I've read them so many times, I've lost count. So have both my kids. What makes Eddings' books so good is his ability to bring his characters to life. They become more than just fictional constructs - in fact, they become friends.

    Book Description

National parks are a distinctively American idea. But it takes people to make them happen. This unique, insider's account tells how Bay Area activists forged bipartisan local and national support for an unprecedented campaign to create a great new national park. In 1970, beginning with the former Army lands originally reserved to protect San Francisco Bay, the grassroots People for a Golden Gate National Recreation Area succeeded in preserving all of the spectacular land that frames the Golden Gate.
Spanning more than thirty eventful years, Amy Meyer tells the story of how dedicated citizens, including visionary conservationist Edgar Wayburn, master politician Phillip Burton, and a battalion of lesser-known but key allies made our democratic system work for the common good and won their fight to save these dramatic and historic lands for all of the American people. Pictures by noted California photographers capture the park's grandeur and new activities. New Guardians for the Golden Gate tells how a bold vision, dedicated citizens, and a variety of old and new conservation strategies saved these magnificent lands for all time.

4 out of 5 stars Taking it for granted .......2007-09-21

When we are at home in SF, our family has spent time in some part of Golden Gate National Park at LEAST once a week for many years. Amy and the others whose largely untold story this book recounts and who protected this remarkable place cannot be thanked adequately. It is a case study of citizen activism, told in an appropriately understated and detailed way (though it is less than the compelling read it would have been if it were morphed into the script of a Docudrama -I'm thinking maybe Kathleen Quinlan as Amy?). It seems that there was all kinds of serendipity but the underlying successes and the dedication of these folks, without whom it would NEVER have happened (including a class of politicians, looking out for the future, who I don't see in today's politics) is something to be admired, studied and recreated.
Bonus: Richard Nixon, visiting SF during his reelection campaign, took a short boat trip out into the Gate and declared his support for legislation that would establish the Park. There is a photo of him on the boat looking more relaxed and happy than in anything I have ever seen other than a family photo. I'd like to think it was the setting and the idea that helped him feel that way.
In any case, when I am on Thornton Beach with the dog (under voice command and ignoring the Snowy Plovers) or running in the Headlands (once the proposed site of a 30,000 resident planned community!) or hiking on Sweeny Ridge or at an event at the Presidio, I always try to remember the many years of hard work that I learned about from Ms. Myer and Mr. Delehanty.

        Book Description

Before becoming known worldwide as the notorious penitentiary and, more recently, a famous tourist attraction, the little island of Alcatraz in the middle of San Francisco Bay was controlled by the U.S. Army for nearly 90 years. This barren, guano-covered island surrounded by treacherous currents was ideally located to serve its dual purposes as military defense post and prison.

In FORTRESS ALCATRAZ, San Francisco historian John Arturo Martini explains the fascinating history of this landmark, from its discovery and seizure to its role during wartime; its tenure as a maximum-security federal prison; and finally to its present-day status as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Visit FORTRESS ALCATRAZ and learn all about the mysterious place called "the Rock."

5 out of 5 stars The Best Military History of Alcatraz *****.......2006-06-28

John Martini's Fortress Alcatraz is the best book you can buy to learn about the military history of Alcatraz. No other book offers more information on the military occupation. The book is packed with interesting photos and is useful as a tour aide when planning your trip to Alcatraz and walking the many paths of Alcatraz. I admit that this isn't my favorite facet of history when it comes to Alcatraz. Yet, after I located the book and started reading it, I was addicted. Martini has a simple but entertaining writing style and his book is one of the finest written on what is mostly a forgotten era of early Alcatraz history.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ADDING THIS BOOK TO YOUR ALCATRAZ LIBRARY.

        4 out of 5 stars Great photographs.......2000-12-01

A former park ranger stationed at Alcatraz and a military historian, Martini takes readers into the days before "the Rock" became a prison. Starting with the first mappings of San Francisco Bay by the Spanish and English through the modern day, Martini presents an amazing number of photographs of and stories about life on Alcatraz. Particularly interesting is how designs for the fort and its armaments changed over the years from the Mexican-American War through the Civil War and through to World War II. It's quite a different look at the island that the common focus on Al Capone, the Bird Man and other inhabitants of the federal prison.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work - very readable with fantastic photographs........1998-12-31

John Martini's well-thought-out work gives a very readable, historically accurate look at the "fort period" of Alcatraz Island. John brings the old fort to life, and gives a visitor to Alcatraz a new perspective on the historic site. A real treasure are the numerous photographs John was able to obtain through painstaking research - most were mislabled in the Archives! As a total package, the book is very enjoyable and informative - a very good read.

        5 out of 5 stars Simply great!.......1998-01-01

For the first time, the fascinating story of the U.S. Army's nearly 90 years on Alcatraz comes to life - coastal guns, Civil War and San Francisco, army family life on the island, and tales of the military prison. John Martini describes the Rock in a lively manner and gives us an exciting history, well-illustrated with rare 19th-century photographs." Erwin N. Thompson Historian
