Book Description

In Through Wolf’s Eyes, Jane Lindskold introduced Firekeeper, the young girl raised by intelligent, language-using wolves. Abducted back into human society, Firekeeper found that, in the world of deadly human political intrigues, her training as a pack animal served her well.

Later, in Wolf Captured, Firekeeper and her lupine companion Blind Seer found themselves kidnapped and dragged overseas, to the unfamiliar land of Liglimon, where humans have a different relationship to intelligent animals. Now, still in Liglimon, Firekeeper and Blind Seer respond to a request for assistance from Truth, the soothsayer-jaguar.

Then, while helping Truth, Firekeeper and her companion come across evidence of elaborate investigations into kinds of ancient magics taboo in Liglimoshti culture. It appears more people in Liglimon are willing to flout this taboo than anyone cares to admit, and Firekeeper and Blind Seer decide their duty is to find out more.

But Truth knows more than she's telling. She can see and trace future timelines for particular individuals, which in the past has led her into madness. Since then, the Voice that guided her out of that madness has continued to speak to her, and it's not her friend.

Eventually Truth realizes that her Voice may well be a person the Liglimoshti call "The Meddler" -- a dangerous trickster figure. But Truth doesn’t own up to this until far too late…

Compellingly told, rich with real people and real animals, WOLF HUNTING is the latest and strongest in an increasingly and rewarding sequence of fantasy epics.

5 out of 5 stars A Voice Among the Possibilities.......2007-08-12

Wolf Hunting (2006) is the fifth fantasy novel of the Wolf series, following Wolf Captured. In the previous volume, Shivadtmon killed Wahn, but was captured and turned over to the u-Liall to tell the whole plot. The Wise Dolphins brought back Dantarahma's body and let it float ashore. Rahniseeta was selected as his replacement in the u-Liall, so her engagement to Derian was now socially and politically impossible. Derian and Barnet are later returned to the north to carry word to their monarchs and the families of the lost sailors.

Several of the maimalodalum died during the intrusion, including Questioner. Still, Questioner remained alive and awake long enough for Firekeeper to have a final conversation with him. Then she and Blind Seer ran out into the wilderness for a long while.

In this novel, the Wise Jaguar diviner Truth has been lost in the possibilities for over a year. She hears a mocking voice calling her and follows through the threads. Then she finds herself blocked by a door. She calls out for Firekeeper and the maimalodalum hear her.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer have been roaming the Misheemnekuru islands for a full year. They have been visiting various packs, helping where needed, and gaining reputations for courage and wisdom. They have even acquired a pack of their own, with Dark Death and the pregnant Moon Frost joining them. Then young Rascal comes to them and Moon Frost has two pups that live; the others die of the deformities common to the island inhabitants.

One day in the heat of the summer, Lovable the Wise Raven comes to the pack to summon Firekeeper and Blind Seer to the maimalodalum council. The summoned pair start off to Central Island immediately and the rest of the pack follows more slowly. Some days later, Firekeeper and Blind Seer climb the hill to the sacred buildings where the maimalodalum headquarters is located.

The council informs Firekeeper and Blind Seer of Truth's condition and recent words. Powerful Tenderness takes them to where Truth is confined in her madness and Firekeeper attracts the attention of the jaguar. Upon returning to reality, Truth tells them of the door and its placement within the house that is not a house. Blind Seer recognizes the setting and they return to the council to plan the excursion.

Firekeeper, Blind Seer, Powerful Tenderness and Plik locate the door, learn how to open it, and enter a small suite that has been occupied, but is currently empty. They rescue Truth from behind another door and search the rooms and contents. The main room contains a small library and Firekeeper finds six statues, two of which are broken, hidden within a pool of running water.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer recognize four of the statues. The two broken statues were of persons who had delved deeply into forbidden magic. After hearing Truth's experiences, the team decides to take back everything portable to Center Island.

In this story, the beast-souled maimalodalum search their own archives for information related to the recovered items and to Truth's story. One interesting bit of information concerns the identity of the voice that Truth has been hearing. The writings recovered from the hidden rooms had been defaced to remove all names, but the tales themselves were about someone who matched stories in the archives about the Meddler, a semi-divine entity who had originally been human.

The maimalodalum council cannot identify the two unknown statues. Although the clothing carved on the figures shows a Liglim influence, it does not quite match any illustrations in the archives. The council decides to solicit the assistance of the Liglimom in the search and sends Plik -- who can pass for human at a distance when clothed -- with Firekeeper, Blind Seer and Truth to talk to the u-Liall.

When Firekeeper returns to the mainland, she finds Derian has also come back. Now he is chief advisor to the Bright Haven ambassador. She swiftly brings him up to date.

The Liglim archives are also unable to identify the nationality of the unknown statues, but the clothing styles suggest that they probably come from a citystate south of their border. Derian, Harjeedian and the Wise Horse Eshinarvash join the party when they head south. Derian and Harjeedian make the initial contact with the leaders of these states, but firekeeper and the yarimaimalom are the main attractions in the temples along the way.

This story strongly involves magic. Firekeeper despises all magic, but has sufficient experience with the art -- particularly with blood magic -- to recognize certain patterns in its usage. Since she doesn't speak human languages all that well or often, she mostly demonstrates her ideas by actions rather than words.

The Meddler -- who prefers to think of himself as only one of many meddlers -- lives up to his cognomen by intervening at key points within the story. Although he tries to convince everyone that his actions are motivated by compassion, most suspect that he has ulterior motives. Nonetheless, he has proven useful so far.

Highly recommended for Lindskold fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of intelligent animals, strange magics, and mysterious entities.

3 out of 5 stars Not Lindskold's best, but may be worth the time..........2007-07-29

I, too, felt the need to slog through this dense novel instead of enjoy it. I didn't skip the parts with Derian and other characters - as another reviewer said here. Plik is a true delight! And Derian, well, you'll have to read the book. He and his struggles may be worth the price of admission, alone. I've read all the other Firekeeper books and I will read Wolf Blood, but perhaps not immediately. This book did seem to meander, as a book with an unknown quest, to an unknown place to find unknown people, with some unreliable information givers as sources might. But the whole thing left me a bit unsettled, unsure of what happened, a bit frustrated, when I finished the book.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly immersive world.......2007-06-12

I think I liked this as much as book 1. Maybe more because I already knew the main characters. I'm releaved about this, because I really didn't care much for the in-between books.

Still, Jane is one of the better fantasy authors at creating real worlds with believable, fully-fleshed characters. It's 2:30 AM, and I just finished reading -- even though my work will suffer, tomorrow. I really couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible tale with characters you know and love........2007-03-09

I got a 58 on an exam because of this book. I seriously could not put it down. Jane Lindskold writes in a way that absolutely captivates the reader, drawing them fully into the story, surrounding them in a world that holds a plethora of surprises. Her imagery is so keen that I see every little detail of her world in my mind's eye, from the colour of Derian Carter's hair to the wild battles that they must fight.

In this installment of the Firekeeper series Lindskold continues to develop the increasingly intriguing story arc that has been going on through each of her novels. Magic and the Old World, which were only mentioned with disgust in the first installment of the series, now begins to take an increasingly important role in the lives of Firekeeper and our friends. While the book can stand on its own, I would highly recommend reading the first four books so you can completely understand all of the undertones and references this one has.

Lindskold's characters are seamless and completely relatable, even though they may be a wolf, a feral child and a carter's son. At times I find myself more interested in the character development than the actual story, but that is not a bad thing in the least. Her characters are so well developed that they actually seem like real people, like one day I could wake up and Derian Carter would be walking down the street. If Lindskold suddenly decided to end her current plot and simply write about the characters lives, I could honestly say that I would not mind. In this installment, without giving too much away, we get a visit from a few old friends, a disease that threatens the life of our protagonists, and a transformation that will leave Lindskold's readers shocked.

The final installment of this series will be a bittersweet read for me. On the one hand I am incredibly anxious to see how she concludes her story arc and to witness the final developments of her characters. On the other hand, I will be devastated to know that it is the end of the line. Lindskold's plot and characters are so gripping that it will be like saying goodbye to good friends when I turn the final page.

Wolf Hunting has been one of my favourite installments of this incredible series and I would recommend it to anybody, even if you are not a fantasy lover.

4 out of 5 stars Far Afield Indeed.......2007-02-21

Someone mentioned that this installment of Firekeeper's story has gone far afield. I guess that's my biggest gripe with it. They go through a portal to another land and it's an almost totally new set of characters around them. Then with many of the new characters I wasn't satisfied with the level she developed them, such as the twins and the two wolves they freed. I really hope in the next book she brings Firekeeper and Blind Seer back to their original turf (Hawk Haven, I believe it's called). I had come to really like the character of Sapphire and I want to see how married life is treating her. :)

5 out of 5 stars Serious, scholarly work.......2005-12-30

This is a very informative, very well written, and very well researched book on the beast. But the current price ~ $750 is outrageously expensive. The other reviewers who say it is worth the price must have based their statements on the earlier, cheaper price of $125. I got access to it through an inter-library loan. If you can't afford the book and are interested in the story of the beast, try to get your local library to arrange an inter-library loan for you. This is a very factual, informative book on the subject. While it may not be worth the current $700 asking price, it is worth the time and effort to find and read a library edition.

5 out of 5 stars Best Account in English of the Beast's Career.......2004-07-26

Ever since encountering the story of the Beast of the Gevaudan in Montague Summers' The Werewolf in my younger years (2 decades ago), I have searched for a fuller account. Mr. Thompson's work far exceeded my expectations when I chanced upon it - he covers in great detail all the victims and traces the full drama of 1764 to 1767 as the Beast is hunted by Duhamel, Denneval, Antoine de Beauterne, and finally killed by Jean Chastel. After a death tally of 100+, just what was it? A wolf? Crossbred monster? Was there only one? Or two?

Thompson's scholarship is impeccable, and includes a bibliographic appendix listing all known records and studies of the Beast up until 1991 (when this tome was published). Although somewhat costly, I concur with the previous review - it is well worth the price if you want to know about the Beast. I have re-read this work three times to digest all the detail. Finally, scholarship doesn't have to be boring - Thompson has written in a style that strikes one as almost a novel. Before you know it, 50 pages have passed and you find a need to pause to catch your breath.

I give this one my highest recommendation - grab it before it goes out of print.

4 out of 5 stars IN THE END WORTH THE PRICE........2002-03-09

I stumbled across this book looking for anything I could find on the Beast of the Gevaudan after seeing the movie The Brotherhood of the Wolf. I was very interested to find out that this movie was based loosely on a real French legend.
Though the author tends to stray from the point sometimes this book has some INCREDIBLE facts about this true story. This alone for me made the book worth the price. The author goes through and accounts for all of the reported attacks that are documented. The accounts are very detailed and truly scary. Also he does a great job of telling how the Beast was finally killed.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in finding out about the The Beast of the Gevaudan.

4 out of 5 stars bool review.......2005-02-12

In the northern woods of Minnesota, two friends, Seth and Matt love the outdoors. They enjoy going hunting when the annual deer season comes around. A few days before deer season Seth and Matt go out and set on their deer stand to scout for deer. As the last sliver of light disapears they climb down from their stand and head back for the house. As they're walking throuh the woods, they here a rustling in the brush. Seth has the feeling they're being watched by wolves. On opening day of deer season Seth and Matt spot a wolf. Seth hears a loud shot, Matt had shot the wolf.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review - Wolf Shadows by Mary Casanova.......2004-01-13

The book I am reviewing is Wolf Shadows, written by Mary Casanova. This non-fiction story takes place in the Minnesota woods. The story talks about wolves and their natural territory. I would suggest this story to anyone who enjoys wildlife, and suspense. From beginning to end, this book is very exciting and moving.

The story begins with two kids named Matt and Seth. Matt enjoys hunting and lives on a farm with his mother, father and baby sister. Seth is Matt's best friend and lives with his family in the town. The two boys spend their time farming, and when the day's work is done, they go hunting for deer.

Mary Casanova writes using a third person, omniscient author style. She frequently uses words like he, she and they when telling the story. Mary Casanova uses metaphors and personification to make the story fascinating. Her simplistic approach, and realistic dialogue, helps the reader understand the story and keep interest.

I loved this book! This story was very enticing. I enjoy reading about animals and their habitat. Being that this story was based on how wolves survive, it was able to capture my interest right from the start. I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys wildlife and nature. The exceptional storyline teaches people how to survive in the woods with wolves, and how a strong friendship can overcome any obstacle.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book.......2004-01-08

This book will grip you--weither you like wolves or not. For those who hate wolves, you might pick Matt's side and for those who love em, seth's.

This book is mainly short and can be read in a single sitting. Of course, after it is done you will re-read. This book is just awesome! It teaches you to make desisions from what is right and wrong and much more then that...

A must read! Just pick it up at the library or just buy it yourself!

4 out of 5 stars Very practical, good information.......2000-10-16

As a journalism myself when I first buy this book I didnt expect the things I got at the end of it. Even that the book concentrates more in the cases of war correspondants, in the way the book is written we can use those examples in our careers even do that we're not working in the war zone by the time. The authors give the readers all the information he or she might need when they decide to break into freelancing. The book is very easy to read and when you finish with it you realize you do it rapidly and you dont get bored or even tired.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and informative.......1999-10-31

Goodman tackles a broad subject with a concise eye for the practical approach to becoming a freelance foreign correpondent. He also might make it sound a little too easy, but I think his heart is in the right place and most of the book is realistic about what steps you should take before making the leap into the correspondent ring. Though still a college student, I have used much of Goodman's advice toward my goal of becoming a foreign correspondent by preparing here on the home front before embarking after graduation. Goodman focus on this side of the issue, preparing relentlessly before you go, is probably the biggest factor in sucess or failure in making the freelance leap work. Easy to read, full of helpful info -- though I wish it could be longer, it goes a long way in what it has.

4 out of 5 stars HUNTING WITH THE WOLF.......2007-01-12

Romona Hilliger is a refreshing new voice in romance, and her Outback adventures bring a wonderful change to those who love contemporary romance. This is a story of a man on a mission of vengeance, and the woman who can finally set him free from his past.

Buck Daniel is in pursuit of the man who raped his wife before taking her life. Always one step behind the vicious murderer, Buck is traveling a route from Melbourne to Darwin and along the way runs into Megan Ducass and her friends who are taking the same route.

Megan's trip is two-fold. A chance to take photographs in the Outback for a magazine and thus secure the job of a lifetime, and to come to terms with the betrayal of her fiancé, whom her friend and traveling companion, insists wants her back. Does she really love the man who cheated on her so casually or is she falling in love with the maverick, Buck Daniel? These are the questions she has to answer before she can get her life back on track and Buck who is falling in love with Megan isn't sure he wants to marry again.

With her skill at portraying the vast Outback of Australia and it's characters, Romona transports you there, right into the middle of it all.

The two protagonists, Buck Daniel and Megan Ducass will steal your heart and I'd be surprised if you didn't read the book more than just once.

4 out of 5 stars Delight to read.......2006-06-19

Megan Ducass is on holiday with her best friend and her friend's husband. Meg gets the impression that Nat, her friend's husband, doesn't want her around. Meg doesn't say anything because she doesn't want to make waves for her friend, and besides, she needs a ride into Darwin. During the trip, Meg and her friends cross paths more than once with a longhaired man driving a Nissan Patrol. Finally meeting him, Meg is dismayed to find out that the man she has been secretly lusting after is wearing a wedding ring. Ring or not, two nights later Meg needs this man to get her out of town after her friend's husband tells Meg exactly how much he didn't want her on the trip. Begging for a ride from the longhaired stranger, Meg is relieved that he finally gives in.

Buck Daniel is on a mission to find the man that raped his now deceased wife. Hot on his trail, Buck doesn't need the distraction of a city girl like Megan Ducass. His toughness seems to melt away, however, when Meg begs for a ride and promises to stay out of his way. Meg also thinks that Buck is married and therefore off limits. Buck doesn't offer any explanation and they start on their journey.

Buck and Meg are going to travel in search of the man that harmed Buck's wife and Buck figures that Meg will eventually get tired of traveling. This doesn't happen and one thing leads to another and the two find themselves fighting their attraction. When danger strikes their campsite, things get pretty heated.

Hunting With The Wolf by Romona Hilliger is not the type of genre of book that I was expecting from the title. I was thinking werewolf and that is not what this book was about. Hunting With The Wolf deals with two very strong people trying to come to grips with events that happened in their lives that hurt them. It is about two people finding love while not even looking. I found myself immersed in the story and not coming up for air! I loved that Megan was able to reduce Buck to stammering goo. Buck is tough and loyal, but Megan is tougher. Knowing exactly what she wanted, she wasn't afraid to ask or even beg.

Hunting With The Wolf by Romona Hilliger was enjoyable. While not the genre I pictured, it was still a delight to read and I am glad that I did!

      5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2002-12-26

Melvin Burgess's first novel,The Cry of the Wolf is without a doubt my most favorite book I have ever read! It is a compelling story about the greediness of a deranged man, also known as the hunter. But if I left you with that you would not have truely understood this novel. The Cry of the Wolf is also about the strugle that last wolf in England is put throught to survive. Even if you do not like wolfs this book is still one that should be on every young readers shelf. Although there is some vilonce and crude nature, so I reccomend that children should be ten at the youngest when they read this book. I was 10, and now I'm almost 15 and still love it, and hopefully will for the rest of my life.

      5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2000-03-30

WoW! This has been one of my favorite books since I got it a few years ago. I've read it at least 10 times and lent it to most of my friends. It's billed as a children's book, but it's fairly violent, sometimes chillingly so. I would wait to give it to kids until they're 12 or so. Evil is personified as the Hunter, who is never given a name, only his Occupation to identify him. Grey Cub, on the other hand, is a wolf who seems at times almost human. Between the Hunter and his prey stands Ben Tilley, who loves the wolves, and doesn't realize that he's opening the door to their extinction when he tells a stranger that they exist.........

The Cry of the Wolf is my all time favourite book, I loved it! I thought it was really awesome, and have read it at least eight times! I totally recommend it, especially if you like wolves! It's really sad in some parts, but I think the ending was good. :)
