5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

this book Its great because anyone liked cartoon this book would like him

5 out of 5 stars Jack & Annie in China.......2006-04-25

When Jack and Annie found out that they were going to China, they went straight to the treehouse. They met Morgan there, and she told them that they had to save a library in China. The dragon king was going to burn all the books, because he didn't like them. Jack and Annie saw a huge map of the castle where the emporer lived and they used it to help them find the library. In the end, Jack and Annie saved the library and were heroes again.

I liked this book because of the Terra Cotta soldiers (we have one of these at home !), the Chinese hats that Jack and Annie wore, and the dragon kings clothes. And I think I'm a good judge of Chinese things, since I was born in China !

5 out of 5 stars the burning of the books.......2006-02-02

I hate the way the Dragen King wanted to burn all the books in China. But I am glad that Jack and Annie saved one. They escaped eveything.

5 out of 5 stars The Trip to China.......2005-04-13

This story take place on China in the 1970, the boy and the girl were ready to go to China and they go in to get the bamboo book that is on the city, and they find two Chinese people. They take them to the city and they see people selling fish, the boy told them if they can take them to the library to find the bamboo book that has all the secrets of China.
This book is mostly about two kids that go to China to look for the bamboo book that is in the city of China. They went to the library with the secret library card and finally they found the bamboo book.

In my opinion, I think its a very good book because, the trip to China and the Great Wall and the Dragon King's tomb.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Dragonlance book........2007-07-20

Unpopular setting in the timeline, coupled with a writing style that seems to be emulating Weis & Hickman but failing, make this entire trilogy overall unremarkable. Only worth reading to keep up with the setting storyline.

3 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2007-01-23

Rabe gets her groove finally during this book. The first one was very clunky with very little character development. The characters become more fleshed out during this book and the plot twists are surprising. I wasn't holding out much hope after the first, but this was actually pretty good. Would have given 3.5 stars, but didn't have the option for it.

2 out of 5 stars I hated it.......2004-10-06

I couldn't get past the first 150 pages of it. I just found myself lossing to much interest in the story to the point where I didn't care what happened to the characters or Krynn. You could skip this trilogy and completely understand what's going on on Krynn during the War of Souls. Rabes style of writing just isnt for me I guess. The first book of the series was good, but not really this one in my opinion.

If you have nothing better to read, then pick this up, other than that I dont think it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Picking up steam.......2004-05-04

This book was far better than the first. A lot of important things are now happening in the dragonlance world and everything is going at a break neck pace. I was very pleased to see that the characters from the first book are being given a lot more depth. New characters are entering in from different sources. This pick has a style very simaler to the Chronicles trilogy. There is a LOT that goes on.

4 out of 5 stars Day of The tempest.......2003-04-11

This book is likley to satasfy you even more than the one preceding it, The Dawning of a New Age, though not as good as the book following it ,The Eve of the Malestrom. I recomend this book highly and know any of the people reading this would enjoy every word.

4 out of 5 stars Knight for a day .......2005-10-04

Knight for a day was funny in small differnt parts. A famouse guy from DSA (dragon slayer academy) will come his name is sir lancelct. He came to show the DSA boys how a knight should dress up and, fight. Erica dosent like sir lancelct so when was running Erica put her foot out she tript him. He is also famous for his birthmark on his right heel that is shape like a sord. At the end they tell sir lancelot to leave.
I liked this book because it is a adveture, some comedy, and in there other Dragon Slayers Academy is more of action. In some way it is wierd because they have the wierdest names like wiglaf or baldrick. This was just book number five of ten.

5 out of 5 stars Son couldn't get enough of it........2004-05-12

This is a great book from a great series. My 9 year old son loves them. He took the books every time we went on a road trip, read them before bed, he was even reading them instead of watching afterschool cartoons! They are well written and funny.

5 out of 5 stars Knight for a day.......2004-02-26

Knight for a Day was a really good book , one of my favorite parts was the weapons class with Master X . I would recomend this book if you like humor.

4 out of 5 stars Tom's Review.......2001-11-26

I thought this was a great book! I especially enjoyed the part when Master X was going to cut off Knuckle and Squint Squeaky's heads!! Of course this did not really happen...

5 out of 5 stars Inspired a School to Read.......2001-10-30

My son and I discovered this whole series of books when he was a first grader...perfect for him to read as a second grader now. In the spirit of Harry Potter and the Hobbit but not so complex that kid's lose the story line. Full of jokes and adventure, I cannot recommend these any more strongly for the 7 to 10 age group (depending on reading ability). We've had two impressive endorsements:

When we first began reading about Wiglaf, it was on a plane to Colorado. As I read to my son, I realized that other children were tuning in to the story. Several parents asked for the book titles and the author when we landed.

Also, late last year I read books 1-3 for a first grade class and have since read to the second grade. The library has been unable to keep two full sets in stock and the teachers have purchased their own sets. It has taken reading by storm as boys and girls strive to finish the series.

Oh yeah, and adults will get a private chuckle out of the humor and wordplay from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent History.......2007-08-09

Excellent history of Dragons and a crucial epoch in Warcraft lore. Must reading for all Warcraft enthusiasts

5 out of 5 stars An AWESOME Book.......2007-03-25

This book is probably the best book I have ever read, and I have read a LOT. No other book has as much suspense or detail. Someone who hasn't played Warcraft or even World of Warcraft might have a little trouble understanding the content of it, but overall it is a wonderful book. Even after I read it, I became addicted, and started reading my favorite parts over and over again. There are lots of pleasant suprises that you will find inside, and if you're interested, a tiny hint of romance. If you want to find out more about Warcraft, or just find a nice fantasy book to read, this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Another generic by Knaak.......2007-01-10

Knaak is the most generic author of all-time. His characters are bland, and even though he's hand-fed the events that take place they still somehow manage to be less than exciting. He makes his own characters the stars of the tale when they didn't even exist in the real lore. Not only do they not belong there but they are some of the most boring and generic characters around.

4 out of 5 stars Dang this is a addicting book.......2006-11-30

This book is super addicting i spent like 6 hours a day reading this book. Richard A. Knaak makes the plot so suspenseful like when Rohnin (the main character) enters the dragonqueens prison and ends up getting himself a prisoner as well when he gets caught caught by Nekros the commander of the orcs. Also another suspenful moment was when the Rhonin and two other of his allies got stuck when the golem hit the roof and everything colapsed but i won't tell you how Rohnin saved him and his allies. So you have to read the book to see what its really about.

3 out of 5 stars Standard Novel.......2006-08-30

This is a good start for the Warcraft novels - and if you played the games, you will see little that reminds you of them, as it seems the world has been fleshed out alot more since Warcraft II ( the last I played ).

It is typical fantasy, but a few things are different, as in dwarfs do NOT hate elves. And there are dwarves that live in the mountains, as well as dwarves that fly the dragons ( a very odd thing going from most fantasy worlds, as dwarves are normally scared of heights)

But honestly if you ever played the game or enjoy fantasy this book should be on your reading list somewhere. And as for the story, it is still very standard of fantasy - but the author is well respected in the field and, from what I can tell has never written a book I did not enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Not a Set of Books!.......2007-01-10

I mistakenly thought these were books and as they were intended as a Christmas present, was terribly disappointed. You can't tell by the title that they are NOT books, but rather cassette tapes. I don't think my grandaughter even owns anything that would play cassettes in this day and age! Be careful what you are ordering!

Book Description

The Dragon Slayers' Academy is back-and it's bigger and better than ever! The books have new covers and are now 112 pages long. Expanded from the old 96-page format, they now feature a fun Dragon Slayers' Academy Yearbook at the end of each story, with funny profiles of the faculty, the staff, and, especially, the students of D.S.A. All the things kids want to know about their favorite characters are revealed: their silly nicknames, inner secrets, wildest dreams, and lofty plans for the future!

When a traveling minstrel foretells that he is to become a hero, Wiglaf sets out to fulfill his destiny: he signs up at the Dragon Slayers' Academy. But how can he ever hope to be a dragon slayer when he can't even stand the sight of blood?

Illustrated by Bill Basso.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's Ok.......2007-04-14

Like Harry Potter, Wiglaf starts off in a less than favorable existence with surrogate parents and gets the fortuitous chance to leave home for an unconventional medieval-like school. The humor mostly centers around the headmaster of this Dragonslayer's Academy being greedy and saving money by feeding the kids eels, the absentmindedness of a wizard that Wiglaf meets along the way, and Wiglaf's fear of dragons and violence in general. The plot is mostly Wiglaf trying to figure out the weakness of a dragon that Wiglaf has to fight, and the revelation at the end that the weakness is no magic item or weapon but something rather silly and midly amusing. The books are basically modern style weekly cartoons in written form, which might be a good thing to start out reluctant readers on who have not yet tackled chapter books. However, I found the illustrations a tad low quality for the amount of focus placed on them and the 9 to 12 age group is kind of stretching it. It's better suited to maybe the 6 to 10 crowd.

5 out of 5 stars It isn't a bad book........2007-01-24

No one slays a dragon in present. Where the heck is dragon, you might say. Wiglaf is a young timid future dragon slayer, but he faints when he sees a blood. Wiglaf, his princess friend Erica, and goodie lover Angus make a great trio in Kate McMullan's new try for fantasy book, Dragon Slayers' Academy, which won the Best Picture Book in The New York Times. Just because his parents want him to bring the gold, Wiglaf Accidentally slays two dragons, rescues the best knight of the world, goes field trip to dungeon and even meets a ghost.
With simple and kiddish, but new and fun story of McMullan can be weird. Kids' chants and easy story, and characters' antics are basically for the children. But new ideas always come up with new book is never boring. Bill Basso's freaky but funny illustrations greatly match the funny mood of D.S.A. Well, this book requires readers to take some sick jokes like crazy knock-knocks. Also short but thick subplots will make readers to naturally guess the next story, even they didn't want to.
Yet there are little problems within it. Sometimes too short and fast story might not be satisfying. But in some cases, this will be helpful, like for kids who can't read fat books like Harry Potter. Other one is that kiddish story wouldn't really fit for people over 13 years old.
Fun, freaky, and weird, this is a book for kid readers or readers who want to read "something odd". It might not fit to people who are fans of serious books, since D.S.A. is a book that is very far from serious.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Fun and exciting.......2006-10-15

I'm six and I enjoyed this book. This book was very funny in different types of ways. It was about 3 children who go through adventures in a school for young dragon slayers. It reminds me of how it feels to be a new student. My favorite character is Angus who is always hungry and only hates eel but thats what they are served usually. I also like the pig that speaks pig latin! This is the first in a series. I have read 10 of them and plan to read them all.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, thrilling, well-written, and full of colorful characters.......2005-12-13

I enjoy reading the volumes in this series almost as much as my 5-year-old son enjoys hearing them read. Kate McMullan is a talented writer who displays wonderful wit and skill but also a great deal of heart. The Dragon Slayers' Academy books are a mixture of Harry Potter, Roald Dahl, and even (dare I say it?) the old Harvard Lampoon parody, "Bored of the Rings".

I should warn that my son does occasionally have difficulty following some of the dialogue and narratives (at which points, I simply pause to offer quick explanations or glosses). Also, there have been a couple of spots where gore becomes a concern (for example, the executioner's song in book 3).

The lively illustrations as well as the humorous "DSA Yearbook" (including a "campus" map) are great bonuses.

I think that this book (and the series) is an excellent step along the path toward, say, Harry Potter or the Hobbit, but will also be treasured (and re-read) on its own right.

5 out of 5 stars The New Kid At School.......2005-10-08

Each year many of the students in our school are new, some coming from shelters while some simpy move around the city where our school is located. All of the students can relate to the main character. This is a fast read and the students love it. I can not keep this series on the bookshelves we have 2 and 3 compies of most of the titles. A great book that keeps the students wondering.

Creel, the heroine of Dragon Slippers is hardly a damsel-in-distress. After her aunt totes her out to the local dragon in desperation (with the hope that the local prince will rescue her from certain death and marry her), Creel refuses the haughty prince and finds friendship with the dragons, who set her on a journey to the center of the kingdom with a pretty pair of what only seem to be ordinary slippers. Along the way we discover Creel's enormous talent at embroidery, and you can't help but linger over the rich descriptions of her lovely tapestry-like gowns, which quickly make her the most sought-after dressmaker in the kingdom. But soon enough those mysterious slippers begin to wreak havoc, and it's up to Creel to save the kingdom from disaster and defend the dragons from certain doom. Creel's feisty spirit breathes fiery new life into this epic world at every turn, making this one of the most memorable and fun fantasy debuts to hit shelves since Cornelia Funke's Inkheart.

Read "The Brown Dragon of Carlieff," the first chapter of Jessica Day George's Dragon Slippers.

Five Questions for Jessica Day George

Amazon.com: In fantasy novels, dragons are typically fierce and fearsome. In Dragon Slippers however, Shardas and Feniul are peaceful, caring creatures who are dangerous only under the sway of human control. What was your inspiration for re-imagining this legendary species?

Jessica Day George: I had a number of imaginary friends growing up, all of them talking animals: a wolf, some horses, a tiger. And a dragon. Oh, I wanted a dragon for a friend so badly! (Still do!) There are books where the dragon is not the bad guy (Anne McCaffrey, Gordon Dickson), but I wanted still more. I wanted the dragons to have their own lives: friends, hobbies, food allergies. I saw no reason why large, magical, intelligent creatures couldn't be just like humans--only scaly and winged. If humans can be good or evil, vain or kind, why can't dragons?

Amazon.com: Your descriptions of Creel's "fancywork" are so rich with detail and color that I have to believe that you must be an expert sewer yourself. Are you? Can you tell us more about why you chose this particular talent for your heroine?

Jessica Day George: I can sew, although I doubt very much a duchess would hire me to make her a gown! Creel sprang into my head as a fully formed personality with her own talents and opinions firmly intact, I just knew that her name was Creel, she had freckles, and she wanted to be a dressmaker. The "fancywork" developed as a way for her to pay homage to her friend Shardas and his collection.

Amazon.com: Why do the dragons in Dragon Slippers hoard treasured human possessions like shoes and dogs instead of gold? Shardas' collection of beautiful stained glass is particularly unique--does this tell us anything about his true nature?

Jessica Day George: People collect all kinds of crazy things: spoons, stamps, books. I once lived next door to a woman with sixty (yep, 6-0) toy poodles. So why should dragons not all hoard the same thing? Why not tapestries or pets or shoes? And what makes Creel and Shardas such good friends, I think, is that they both have a good eye for color and form. They can both appreciate the way colors combine, the way light changes the look of things and plays off the colors.

Amazon.com: Of all the fantasy literature you've read, is there a particular author who inspired you to write your own novel? What would be your top five favorite books in the genre?

Jessica Day George: The first time I read Robin McKinley's Damar novels (The Hero and the Crown, The Blue Sword) I thought "Yes! This is what goes on in my head! I could do this!" If I had to narrow it down to five favorites (only five?!), I would say: Beauty by Robin McKinley, Tam Lin by Pamela Dean, The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams, His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik, and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. (Those all count as one big book, right?)

Amazon.com: What's next in store for Creel and Luka? Will they have more dragon adventures in your next book?

Jessica Day George: My next book is not connected to Dragon Slippers at all, but the one after that will be a sequel. I hate to spoil any surprises, but we will get to see what happens when a dragon turns evil (of its own free will). There are also two weddings, Marta gets a pet monkey, and Feniul falls in love.

Book Description

Many stories tell of damsels in distress, who are rescued from the clutches of fire-breathing dragons by knights in shining armor, and swept off to live happily ever after.

Unfortunately, this is not one of those stories.

True, when Creel’s aunt suggests sacrificing her to the local dragon, it is with the hope that the knight will marry Creel and that everyone (aunt and family included) will benefit handsomely. Yet it’s Creel who talks her way out of the dragon’s clutches. And it’s Creel who walks for days on end to seek her fortune in the king’s city with only a bit of embroidery thread and a strange pair of slippers in her possession.

But even Creel could not have guessed the outcome of this tale. For in a country on the verge of war, Creel unknowingly possesses not just any pair of shoes, but a tool that could be used to save her kingdom…or destroy it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-09-14

This book is written in a very original and entertaining manner. I'm 65 and loved it! I let my 9-year-old friend borrow it and she (in her words) loved, loved, loved it!! I loved the heroine being equal to the challenges presented to her. She also was mature enough to admit it when her goals changed.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2007-09-14

I loved this book. It arrived at 5:00 in the evening. I started reading it and could not put it down. I finished it that night and then started it all over again the next day. I would read this book to my children. I have recommended it to my library for the young adult area. It was wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Empowering.......2007-09-11

I enjoyed this book and when my daughter is a bit older I plan to read it to her. It's refreshing to have a fantasy genera book where the female is not the damsel in distress and really can be the hero.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-09-10

This book is very good for the kids into dragons and knights of old. Very well written and has a good flow to it. I was lucky I got this one before the kids got to it. Great for them and a good Sunday read for me. Well recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I LOOOOVE THIS BOOK!.......2007-08-20

Dragon Slippers has just the right amount of wit, action, and character strength to make it a more than outstanding book! I laughed several times outloud, and found myself very attached to both humans and dragons alike. My ten year old daughter will usually only read nonfiction books, but I had her start this novel after I finished and she couldn't put it down. She would even read in the car because she didn't want to stop reading. One time she yelled, "I LOVE this book!" It was a great moment for me as a mom because I'm an avid novel reader, and have never been able to get her into reading them (other than for school reports) until now. As soon as she finished, she asked if I had any other novels like this one. I gave her a whole stack. I'm so happy that Dragon Slippers did this for my daughter!
