Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Really great series!.......2007-01-10

I really enjoyed this series. In fact, I miss it. The books are long, but very well done and the characters spring to life. The author writes setting beautifully and you really can get lost within the pages. I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys fantasy. You can't go wrong with this and you'll never regret reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Te best books I have ever read.......2007-01-03

After reading all the books by John Marco, in the series of Tyrants and King, and now the three books in this series, i have concluded that, fot me. John Marco, along with Robin Hobb are the best writers in this genre (I am looking forward to reading the books of George R. R. Martin when he finishes his series).
I was amazed by the way John Marco can create a world and a story, all his books have a story that is so interesting that you have to keep reading it until you finish it, its a amazing how he handles that many characters and doesn't lose you in the way, how he shows you so many places, each different from the rest, with their own rules and problems.
He does in one book what a lot of writers do in three or more, the story is always advancing and a lot happens in each book, so you are never bored.
If I could give more stars to this book i would(and to all his books, because I like almost all of them the same), I highly recomend all of John Marco`s books to everybody, no only science fiction / fantasy readers, you will enjoy them very much

4 out of 5 stars a bronze medal for the series finale [spoilers noted].......2006-11-06

"The Sword of Angels" concludes the adventures of Lukien, the anguished Bronze Knight of Liiria along with Gilwyn Toms and the fate of Baron Glass. The main plot does not flow easily amid fewer concerns and shocking character directions since the action appears forced and the dialogue uncomfortable. The battles involving the Devil's Armor contain fearsome magic but fall short in excitement compared with the predecessors.

Secondary characters such as King Lord the Wicked and Prince Aztar become more assertive and quite captivating yet advance the overall storyline minimally. New character Corvalos Chane captures the reader's attention as a roguish individual whose depth is ultimately unexplored. Sadly, some of these individuals may be the strongest figures but have the worst position in the story only as distraction material.

[minor spoiler]

At one point, Lukien willingly relinquishes the magic from the Eye of God and begins succumbing to his fatal injuries. During the period of pain, he still communicates to the foreigners surrounding him via the magical abilities previously provided by the Eye of God. The obvious oversight should not have occurred.

[end minor spoiler]

Lukien behaves immature towards his superiors many times by his actions and remarks. Whatever happens with Salina and Baralosus in addition to the Inhumans remains unresolved. The final battle between the Sword of Angels and the Devil's Armor and their respective Akari is rather anti-climatic. The frantic deaths feel like a quick and easy solution instead of integrating a character's progression into the series conclusion.

I found the few spelling errors in the book a mild nuisance. A detailed map of the significant terrains would have been useful.

Thank you.

2 out of 5 stars Writing is shallow and repetative.......2006-09-18

I was fairly engaged in the last two books. This last one in the trilogy was incredibly disappointing. The writing was shallow and unimpressive. The battle scenes and any that involved strategy of any kind were the worst. It is like the author had never actually read about a war or studied tactics at all. The stilted writing and dialogue were almost as if someone else had written the book. Perhaps Mr. Marco should spend a little more time on each book instead of trying to milk the meager money that his publishers front him. C-

5 out of 5 stars Truly a wonderful journey.......2005-11-07

I have to admit that this series is something you are happy to have been a part. This last installment does have by far the best piece of writing in the series. The characters are well developed and the ending is a twist that is welcome. I must honestly say that I did not expect the ending and for this I was appreciative. Some of the characters may be a bit sallow but I would have to say that I am glad that I read this series and would do so in a heartbeat.

5 out of 5 stars Worth seeking out. Great SF, great world, great storytelling.......2006-07-05

This book is CJ Cherryh at her best. Six hundred years ago, an alien race declared that a human colony was in *their* space and the humans needed to leave. But not all of them were willing to be evicted, and they endured the "Scouring" when the Sharrh came to finish the job. The planet itself added to the survivors' problems, with earthquakes and floods, so the cities -- particularly Merovingen, where the action takes place -- began to sink into the sea. The descendents cursed their ancestors for fools, ever since.

The story itself -- about a 17 year old "canal rat" who saves the life of a rich and gorgeous guy -- is one of her best love stories, and the action is non-stop. But it's her ability to create a believeable universe that awes me about the author. The world Cherryh created is absolutely real, and she brings it to life with its grittiness, poverty, and refusal to embrace despair. This is definitely SF, not simply a love story with space aliens on a blue screen in the background; Cherryh extrapolates the religions and economics that would result from the abandonment of the human colony.

Sometimes, an author will have a very clear picture of the world but deftly keep most of the details in her head, revealing them only as the need arises. In this case, the world-building details are clearly described, complete with appendices at the back of the book -- because Merovingen became the setting for one of the better Shared Worlds book series. (This is a whole, standalone novel, which you could read without feeling that you're committed to a lifestyle; the others in the series are short stories tied together with a Cherryh-written frame.)

I've had this book since it first came out, and I've re-read it several times. The spine is almost worn through, and my name is scribbled inside the front cover because I've loaned it out so often. It's truly a great SF novel: not in a life-changing Dune sort of way, but just a "Darnit, that's a good story!" sense. With so many Amazon sellers having inexpensive copies of this out-of-print title, it's silly *not* to get a copy.

5 out of 5 stars A good book from a great author........2004-08-19

Before I talk about the story, you need to know two things about the book.
First, the story is set in the universe of the Union-Alliance novels, yet you don't need those books to know what's going on. The book is a stand alone and has lots of information in the back with maps, chapters on history, fashion and even language.
Second, this was meant to be the first in a series of books, very much like the Thieves' World series, but instead of a walled city of the Middle-Ages filled with magic and crime, this was more like a city-state of Italy (during the Renaissance) filled with politics and, sometimes, guns.
And the series did go on as other authors added their own skill and stories to the books that followed.
Now, for the story. Like all of her books, C.J. Cherryh starts small, with a character we think of as normal and a daily event. Altair Jones, the main female character, rescues a man who is tossed into one of the canals. This is normal - bodies are always being tossed in by gangs. But he lived and happens to be a high-born. He also happens to be in the middle of something that seems to get bigger and bigger as the story moves along. By saving him Altair might have also gotten herself involved with a mess that could end up with HER in the canals.
The dangers increase as the knots in this plot are untied and we get close to the truth about what is going on and why. C.J. Cherryh is an artist, crafting the story carefully from start to finish, she never wastes a page, a word or a letter.
This is a must for any of her fans or a good book to start with for people who don't know her works.
I plan to find the rest to see how well the saga went!

5 out of 5 stars I'm 14 and I got the entire book!.......2001-06-07

ok alot of people didn't really get it, I did. I'm not sure if I just have good reading skills or what. I loved this book, after the first time I read it, I bought it. I love the characters, the descriptions of the scenes and the people were very precise and detailed, alot of books don't give me that clear of an image of the setting to which the author wanted to depict. this one did and it made the reading experience more enjoyable, the plot was difficult and thus made it more interesting and hard to follow, giving the reader more to think about and to keep guessing. I love books like these and I wish authors would write more like them.

4 out of 5 stars Ummmm? What was the main plot?.......2001-05-24

This book, though I gave it a good rating, was laking a few things. The first thing it was laking was complex characters. They were good or bad, beautiful or ugly, smart or stupid. Second, was that the descriptions of both the sceneries and the characters weren't believable. There were also thing that were over complicated. Like the plot. There couldn't just be a thing happening, or even a thing inside of a thing. No, it was a thing, inside of a thing, inside of a thing inside of a thing, et cetra. I meen, come on, do you really need all those plots and scheems to write an interesting story and keep a plot going? Other than that I loved this book. There were quite a few moments in the book where I wanted to [hit] one of the charcters on the head and scream at them "What were you thinking!..." There were also time when I felt sorry for them, were proud of them, and pleased that they had done something I wanted to happen. The plot, though complicated, was understandable, and you knew exactly what was happening, when it was happening, and whom it was happening to. Not to mention that you were yelling at all the characters at the time! I loved this book, for all that I hated it, I think everyone who loves fantasy should read this marvelous book!

5 out of 5 stars C.J. Cherryh builds worlds..within worlds..within worlds.......2000-09-08

Ignore any bad reviews of this book. Ignore the off the wall numbering system. Any book that kicks off a series like Merovingen Nights is a really good book. so who needs a really strange but coherent socio-political-religious system that evolved to meet an identifiable, reasonable problem and makes sense of everything that happens? Most science fiction books do. Only some of them have it-like this one. Who needs a lecture to get it straight? most of them, but not this one. who needs starcrossed teenage lovers who act just like teenagers? well, Shakespeare did, so did Cherryh. They got them. Altair Jones is a star-struck, insecure, inconsistent teenage orphan who talks real tough; Thomas Mondragon is a smooth young aristocrat, a cynical, idealistic rebel-turned- adventurer who's out of his element and in a lot of trouble. They need each other, and they'll turn the whole town upside down. this is the story Shakespeare might have written if Juliet had had a backbone and a boat, and Romeo's whole faction had just been wiped out. The plot is rich: the villains are deadly, the bystanders are nervous, the politics are dizzying, the action is intense, but for Altair Jones, self-centered teenager, every thing is just one thing- Mondragon and her. It's funny, it's fast, it's exciting..it's exceptional. Read this book- you won't see many like it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Tale of Knights, Kings, & Justice Stolen/Regained!.......2004-08-28

In the middle of the 9th century, a young girl lives in the royal castle in medieval Europe with her mother, the queen, and her dastardly father, Markold. The throne must pass through Queen Ingunn of Roderick's bloodline. Because she has had no sons, her only child, Ragny, is the last descendant of the line. "Queen Ingunn had made a mistake, and paid for it all her life, but now, with her life gone, she saw a way to make amends" (p. 1). The queen lies on her deathbed. Her last wish in order to make amends is to see her estranged daughter-and to proclaim Ragny rightful heir to the throne as the new queen of Spain. Unfortunately, it is not to be for Markold holds sway over the soldiers and servants of the household. Though Markold does not keep Ingunn from giving Ragny a key piece of information, before the queen dies, he does prevent the proclamation of a new queen. Instead, he intends to marry Ragny, his daughter, and force her to bear a son of the Roderick line.

Ragny is young, slender, almost boyish. She hasn't fully bloomed to womanhood, and already she is facing dilemmas of the worst kind. She cannot stay with Markold and claim her rightful place and to flee is a risky proposition, but she chooses the latter course. With the king's men hot on her trail, she begins a journey to Francia disguised as a young man named Roderick the Beardless. Little does she realize at first that she has allies her foes cannot even imagine. Despite her youth and inexperience, within Ragny beats the heart of a champion, a lover, and a just person, capable of inspiring others so long as she is attired as a man. What will happen if she drops the disguise?

I read the first few pages of this historical drama/romance in the bookstore, was utterly hooked on this epic tale, and could hardly wait to get home and read more about this warrior princess with strange powers on her side. The twists and turns the story takes kept me reading long into the night. The cast of characters-priests, the French king, the Viking invaders, Frankish knights, and Seffrid, the sergeant charged by Markold to track down Ragny-are all well-drawn as are the battles and conflicts. Ragny's journey, both external and internal, was illuminated with grace and power by an author clearly comfortable with bringing history to life. I loved this book! I'd have paid a lot closer attention to medieval history in college if it had been this mesmerizing. Highly recommended to anyone who loves a tale well told about knights and kings, lost princesses, and justice stolen and regained. ~Lori L. 1 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its worst.......2002-10-27

Its hard to believe that Ms. Holland has written over 20 historical novels. After reading The Angel and the Sword it's hard to believe she's written 20 novels. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Holland, and it maybe the last. The writing was simplistic and the characters were uninteresting. The plot dragged on until I could no longer endure it and I put the book down. There are good historical novels out there, but this is not one of them. I am shocked and confused to see this book received such high ratings. If you are determined to read this book I would suggest borrowing it from your local library.

    5 out of 5 stars A story of courage.......2001-12-12

Cecelia Holland's Angel And The Sword tells of a young woman who takes the guise of warrior Roderick the Beardless in order to save her people. Holland brings history to life in a retelling of her story of courage.

    4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2001-11-07

I thought this was a very good book--maybe not quite 5 stars good--but still good. Ragny, on finding out her father's plan to marry her (to himself), runs away. Seffrin, her father's man (or so it seems) chases after her on her father's order. Soon, he realizes that something protects her from harm, and allows her to accomplish her goals. They go to France & meet the King, save the kingdom, marry the princess.....you get the picture.

The plot is pretty typical--about the only twist is the force protecting Ragny--she never seems to be aware of it consciously. Others see it at times, but they discount it to sunlight.

I thought this was a good book because it was well written and mingled fact and fiction seamlessly. The book, if it had been any longer, would have been boring and too drawn out. It is just the right length for the story Ms. Holland was trying to present. I would recommend it for a quick read.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting at first... then sort of goes flat.......2001-08-25

I initially picked up this book because I had heard a lot of good things about the author. Unfortunately... I was somewhat disappointed. At first, the characters and the story are fairly interesting, but it quickly deteriorates from there. After the first few chapters, it was hard for me to continue reading because the story and characters no longer held any interest for me. The uninspired writing did nothing to help alleviate any of this. While I did eventually finish this novel, I cannot find anything positive to say about "The Angel and the Sword".
