Book Description
Originally written by M. Night Shyamalan as a bedtime story for his own children, the story of the Lady in the Water is an imaginative reading experience that inspires readers to observe the world around them and consider their purpose on earth. Like all of Shyamalans work, this story offers a dark mystery with surprising twists, a touch of magic, and a powerful message at the end.

SSSOkay.......2007-10-10
Since I'm not a child and our own child is in mid-30's, I'll have to stay middle on this rating. It is OK, I think, but if/when a parent attempts to read this story to a child, there is a need for "fill"... so the parent will need to be adequate story teller and not just a reader, depending upon the book to do the parental work. In that setting, I rate it 5 stars, but in the real world, where parents desire more help, it's a 3.
Original & Wonderful.......2007-04-22
A truly original and wonderful children's story. It's the first one in a long time I've read that I didn't guess the entire plot and how it develops within the first couple of pages.
Enchanting .......2007-04-10
This book is a beautiful story and the illistrations are visual masterpieces. A must for everyone to read. I enjoyed the movie as well, a great companion set for every age.
------"Just keep an eye out for signs of things in your yard."-----.......2007-03-26
Lady In The Water is an intriguing story about a creature called a narf. Her home is under your swimming pool! She has a purpose! "She is swimming in the pool to be seen by someone in your house." She is a sea nymph and a good creature. Of course, to give some balance to the story, there is also another creature. Something that is called a scrunt and he is not so nice. He lives in the grass and would like to catch the gentle narf.
I find this to be a wonderful and very imaginative story; however, I think this is too scary for young children. I believe it's best for the parents to read it first before purchasing it for their child. Every child is different and parents are best at determining if the subject matter is appropriate for their own children.
I understand the film does not exactly follow the little book, but I'm really looking forward to seeing it. I'm a fan of M. Night Shyamalan's and loved The Village.

Review for Lady in the Water: Book.......2007-03-09
This book is really amazing. But I think I would have liked it more if I would have read it first compared to watching the movie first. It also could have elaborated on the story more. But I also don't regret buying it.
Customer Reviews:
Illustrations are wonderful.......2007-08-28
This is a very good book full of information, and stories, I most captivated by the illustrations. A wonderful book to add to your collection.
Beautifully illustrated mythology.......2004-12-09
This book is one in Time Life Books' The Enchanted World series. Each of these books covers a different aspect of folklore and mythology, and they are an excellent set. They tell stories in a similar format and complement each other well without repeating the content. Each is about 140 pages.
This is a beautifully illustrated well printed volume. Artists include Matt Mahurin, John Collier, John Jude Palencar, Marshall Arisman, John Howe, Kunio Hagio, Michael Paraskevas, Brian McCall, Gary Kelly, Willi Glasauer, Yvonne Gilbert and Sam Bayer. Older depictions of night creatures are mixed in, including Henry Fuseli's Nightmare.
Stories are retold in a style that makes for a good read. These stories come from all over the world. Often there will be smaller illustrations and captions in the margins to the main story. These tell variations of the story and related stories from other cultures.
This is a beautifully bound and printed book. The binding is just cloth to collectors, but it is printed to look like a wizard's book. The cover shows a dragon holding a picture of a spooky night creature (I think its a vampire). I think it was the cover that got me reading this when I was child (this would be for older children because of the spooky nature).
Chapters include:
Perilous Paths through the Dark: A reckoning with Fianna's ancient bane
Visitations from the Realm of the Shadow: Charting the kingdom of dreams
Blood Feasts of the Da__ed: Nightstalker of Croglin Grange
The Way of the Werebeast: The fox maiden
This is a well researched nicely produced series. For me one book in the series (I think it was Fairies) had me hooked. If you are interested in mythology and all things magic then it is definitely worth trying out the series. High school and middle school libraries should consider the series. Some books might cause issues since they are about the occult, but some like The Legend of Camelot book will be completely Kosher.
Great way of knowing what people used to think of the night........2002-11-09
Excellent book, with beautiful pictures representing the stories. This book describes everyones hidden fears of what goes bump in the night all the way back to the beginning of recorded history.

Book Description
When Larry becomes a night guard at New York’s Museum of Natural History, he expects to have an easy job. But on his first night, he dozes off, then wakes up to the most amazing vanishing act in the museum’s history. The museum’s entire collection of dinosaur skeletons has disappeared! In a panic, Larry rushes from one room to the next—then dashes outside into Central Park, and next door into the planetarium. Where did the skeletons go? Who is the dinosaur thief? —And how in the world can Larry get those dinosaur bones back again? Originally published by Barron’s in 1993, this mystery-comedy for kids returns in print as a complement to the major motion picture that it has inspired. Night at the Museum, scheduled for release by Twentieth Century Fox Studios in December ’06, promises to be one of the year’s biggest film hits for family audiences. The book features the author’s original funny, full-color illustrations on every page.

Interesting Source Material for a Superior Motion Picture.......2007-03-20
I took my son to see the film Night at the Museum recently. The film was excellent, clean and original entertainment and my son couldn't stop talking about it. I noticed in the opening credits that the film is based on a children's book so I thought I would pick it up for him to tide him over until this movie appeared on DVD.
When the book arrived, I was pleasantly surprised that the basic premise and overall feel of the film is captured in this book. The illustrations are colorful and playful throughout. The book was written many years before the film came about but most of the main elements of the film are in there including playful dino skeletons, tricky security guards and of course the monkey.
If you enjoyed the movie then this book is a great companion piece to an outstanding family film (which is unfortunately a rare beast these days :(
Different from Movie but Really Good.......2007-02-06
This picture book is a great addition to those who may have seen the recent movie with Ben Stiller. The book, which the movie was LOOSELY based on, describes a newly hired night watchman's experience in a natural science museum on his first night. All the exhibits come to life!
This is a great story for the kids -- the drawings are goofy enough not to scare and the story is one of persevering and finishing the job.
A great book for your shelves.
The Night at the Museum.......2007-01-20
I thought the book was appropriate for a young adult. I ended up giving it to my neighbors three year old son because it was more of a toddlers picture book. I felt the book was misrepresented online.
Night at the Museum --a good read for all ages.......2007-01-09
This book has become a family favorite. A brilliant story by Milan Trenc. We read this story to our children before and after we go to the museum. We never get tired of telling the story--its not the normal kids book. The author does not dumb down his story --very refreshing. It really brings the museum to life. I'd love to purchase other books by this author.

"Doo-bop-a-loo-bop!" In this rollicking romp through a prehistoric weekend, dinosaurs frolic and caper the night away. After some initial early evening shuffling shyness, these party animals are ready to get down, doing the Triassic Twist and the Brontosaurus Bump, the Raptor Rap and Jurassic Jump. With all this rhythm and rhyme, it's no wonder romance is soon afoot: "Tarchia winked at a stegosaur she liked. They danced together, spike to spike." This outrageous book provides a much more appealing theory behind the disappearance of dinosaurs, and hints at the possibility of another Dinosaur Stomp someday in the future. Scott Nash's wonderfully friendly bopping beasts radiate a contagious exuberance with their smiling, simple faces and bright colors and patterns. Carol Diggory Shields couldn't have found a better match for her rocking, rolling, twirling, tromping, "scientifically accurate (more or less)" dinosaurs. A guaranteed favorite that will have young children gleefully chanting "Boomalacka boomalacka! Whack! Whack! WHACK!" (Click to see a sample spread. Text ©1997 by Carol Diggery Shields. Illustrations ©1997 by Scott Nash. Permission by Candlewick Press.) (Ages 4 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Dancing dinosaurs! Reading aloud has never been so much fun!
What did the dinosaurs do for fun? What really happened when the Jurassic gang wanted to let off some steam? They danced, of course! They rocked and rolled; they twirled and tromped! They had themselves a Dinosaur Stomp! With illustrations by Scott Nash that leap off the page like a raptor doing the fandango, Carol Diggory Shields tells dinosaur devotees all about reptilian revelry with a foot-tapping, tail-whacking beat.

Had to have our own.......2007-08-01
We first found this book at the library and found ourselves checking it out time and time again. My daughter is two and a half, though she first fell in love with this book right around the time she turned two. After months of checking it out, I decided it was time to buy our own copy.
It's full of clever rhymes and ideas about dinosaurs and lots of dinosaur identification in a fun way. The pictures are great and the words are even better. Boys and girls alike would enjoy this. My daughter knows all the words to it now, but I still enjoy reading it to her frequently.
We love it!.......2006-08-19
My 5 yr. old son bought this book with his allowance as one of the "recommendations" from Amazon. I love reading it to him as much as he loves having it read to him. He's a HUGE dinosaur fan and loves to rhyme so this book is right up his alley. We highly recommend it!!
Beautiful book!.......2006-02-28
This book is amazing. The pop-ups are incredible, I can't believe how great it really is!
My 4 yr old daughter is really into dinosaurs, so this was one of her B-day presents. She loves to look at the pop-ups. But the T-rex scared her the first time she saw it. Now she loves it.
Great book!.......2006-02-28
My 4 yr old loves this book. It has great rhymes, and nice pictures. It's just a really fun book!
The tape makes it even better.......2005-06-28
My toddler's teacher told us how much she and all the other kids love the tape that goes with this book. After many searching, I found out the tape is only sold through Scholastic. You can't get it online or in a bookstore. For those who are interested, call 1-800-SCHOLASTIC (1-800-724-6527).

Fun and Funny Book.......2001-01-21
We found this at the library and my two year old loves it so much that I came online to order it. We've only had the library version for 4 days and my daughter can already finish many of the lines from the book. The rhymes are charming, even if they aren't always perfect (or maybe it's my pronunciation of the dinosaur names that isn't perfect). There is a wonderful rhythm and repetition to the book that young children love, and the complicated names keep the adults on their toes. Just the right length before naptime. There are fun words for the little ones to practice like 'ooze', and we've already identified Jupiter and Mars. We have a planetarium in our dinosaur museum and this book brings home elements we have seen there.
Bravo, Dinosaurs.......2000-06-06
The imaginative story of Dinosaurs' bedtime rituals (neverbefore discovered), simultaneously introduces dinosaur names and theintricacies of poetry, backdropped by lullabies of soothing cadence.
Entertaining for pre-schoolers to college professors, "Good night, Dinosaurs" is a unique celebration of language and rhythm, matched with delightful illustrations by Victoria Chess.
This book has a wonderful complexity comprised of humorous couplets, alliteration and assonance, and changing patterns.
The colorfully detailed and textured pictures depict the fanciful and comical images that create a superior children's book--a pleasure for both the child and the adult.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting presentation of accurate information........1999-10-01
Bats:Creatures of the Night, is an excellent book which presents very accurate information in an entertaining manner. It also adds some good words, such as "creature", to your child's reading vocabulary.
The book points out that bats are not to be feared as they are not dangerous as described by myth; however, the book fails to warn children that bats do carry disease and downed bats should never be picked up. Although some downed bats are fallen young, others may be sick with Rabies.
Teachers/Parents: The danger myths about bats is a good introduction to the topic of myths in general.

Book Description
Newly rewritten by Gaiman for this graphic novel, these two ominous stories from the author's award-winning prose, Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fictions and Illusions, feature animals and people not being quite what they seem. In "The Price," a black cat like a small panther arrives at a country home and is soon beset by mysterious and vicious wounds. What is he fighting every night that could do this, and why does he persist? "The Daughter of Owls" recounts an eerie old tale of a foundling girl who was left - with an owl pellet - as a newborn on the steps of the Dymton Church. She was soon cloistered away in a local convent, but by her fourteenth year word of her beauty had spread - and those who would prey upon her faced unforeseen consequences.

Requested by my niece..........2007-08-04
...so I don't really know anything about the book, but my niece had it on her Wish List and all I know is that she really likes it.
Not as interesing as Gaiman's novels.......2006-04-08
I am a big fan of Gaiman's novels and have never read the Sandman series. This is the first graphic novel I have ever read and was only moderately intrigued. "The Price" was an interesting short story and the graphics helped, however, "The Daughter of Owls" was less impressive and I didn't care for he illustrations. This made me long for another Gaiman novel, the shortness of this was too disappointing. Not a bad thing to pickup at the library but if you are more of a novel person, don't buy it.
A Beautiful Book for Gaiman/Zulli Collectors.......2005-09-28
If you've never read Neil Gaiman before, this is not the place to start. These are illustrated adaptations of two of his stories collected in Smoke and Mirrors. If you're more interested in his comic work, read Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes. If you like novels, start with American Gods.
If you just read Gaiman but aren't a collector, as I've said, these are in Smoke and Mirrors. On the other hand, if you love the beautiful art of Michael Zulli (whom I've loved since the days of Puma Blues) and want to see him adapt two of Gaiman's stories, you won't be disappointed.
To see more adaptations of Gaiman's stories, check out Murder Mysteries and Harlequin Valentine.
A Beguiling Glimpse Into The Twilight. .......2005-05-19
Able to spin great tales from the endless realms of
human dream and natural wonder, Neil Gaiman is among
the very finest of writers around today. Touching
the bonds between the mundane and the marvelous, with
a flair for language and character which can touch
gently and brusquely arouse, often at the same time,
Gaiman's scope unflinchingly draws our particpation
in some of the most illustrious tales ever told.
Those who've experienced his gripping work in novels
such as AMERICAN GODS, haunting teleplays such as
BABYLON 5's "Day Of The Dead", or Sequential landmarks
such as THE SANDMAN and the playfully-beckoning 1602,
know full well what a Grandmaster of Literature Neil
Gaiman is.
Yet, an area which Gaiman is drawing renewed attention
is the area of the illustrated narrative. Fresh ground
was broken when Gaiman and the superb illustrator Charles
Vess redefined Faerie lore with the award-winning STARDUST.
Now, with the visual depth and engraver's genius of
illustrator Michael Zulli, Gaiman strikes deep with Dark
Horse Comics' CREATURES OF THE NIGHT.
The handsome hardcover offers a pair of tantalizing
vignettes which unveil elusive tableaus of what we cannot
see, or often refuse to face. With word balloons absent
from all but two strategially-placed pages, the result
is a daring read for the attentive spirit, and curious soul.
In "The Price", a black cat's steadfast ordeal is the
window into a deeper mystery as old as Time itself. "The
Daughter Of Owls" peers vividly into essential places
where the wayward and lustful dare not go. Each tale
is delivered with a seamless intimacy which belies
the looming, often terrifying issues at stake.
An artist whose work spans across entire idioms, Neil
Gaiman is a cunning storyteller with much to tell. Those
who think Gaiman's gifts are fit only for any one title,
or should be limited to any one field, do the author -and
themselves- a grave injustice.
Enter evening, reading slowly, mindful of all paths......
Must have for your Gaiman library..........2005-01-11
Granted this book is short (note: 48 pages) and consists only of two stories. But they are new and they are good stories. Gaiman does what he does so well- weaves a tale so well that you're captivated until the end (no matter how long or short the story is).
If you're an avid reader of his online journal, you may recognize the black cat in the first story- which has a shocker near the end. I had a, "Whoaaa... No way, man" moment. And the second reads a lot like an old Grimm fairy tale- the kind that doesn't necessarily end "happily ever after" for everyone. And Zulli's artwork is wonderful in both stories.
I collect all of Gaiman's work, so this was a no brainer purchase for me. If you're new to his work, maybe try Murder Mysteries or Stardust or definitely the Sandman series first. You'll get hooked, I promise. I gave this 4 out of 5 stars strictly because it was so short. I wouldn't have minded waiting for a hardcover with at least five stories of the same length as these two. Because then the book would have lasted longer than half an hour!

This beautifully illustrated rhyming tale allows them to associate playful, fun characters with the sounds and noises they hear. Bedtime Favorite.......2007-03-28
Written in rhyme, this colorful picture book will soon become your child's favorite bedtime story. Creatures of the Night will explain the often scary sounds heard at night, shedding light on the creatures that come out to play.
The little "masked bandit" raccoon wears his clever disguise. The cute little field mice run, jump, and play. Perhaps one of the most prominent nighttime noises is the melody chirped by the crickets. They are pictured as happy smiling little critters. The frogs and toads join in the serenade, as the lightening bugs dance along. The coyote calls his friends to come and play. They walk and jump and run. They dance and sing their serenades until the night is done.
Written for children ages three to seven, it is also a book an older child will enjoy reading to a sibling. Creatures of the Night is colorfully illustrated by Rodger B. Wilson, who is the recipient of many awards for graphic design and illustrations. Author, Stephen J. Brooks has written several children's books. He has served as a Federal Agent for over a decade and writes to comfort children.
Mayra Calvani -- TCM REVIEWS.......2006-12-03
Has your young child ever wondered about those noises in the night, or about those creatures that come out to play only at night?
Creatures of the Night is a lovely rhyming story about those nocturnal creatures that "Come out to run and play," like "The sly and wily old raccoon,/With a mask around its eyes,/Sneaks about in search of food/in his ever so clever disguise."
Other creatures of the night mentioned in the book include the owl, field mice, crickets, frogs, fireflies, coyote, opossum, and muskrats.
The rhymes are delightful and the illustrations beautiful, with a serene, peaceful quality to them, bringing to life the magic of the night and its creatures. It is the kind of book young children will want to listen to in bed at night many times, if only to look at the lovely images of the animals.
A book that both teaches and stimulates young children's imagination, Creatures of the Night is a keeper, and well-worth its hardcover price.
Perfect Bedtime Story!!.......2006-04-22
This is my daughters favorite night time story. She loves the gentle images of the animals and the wonderful rhyming text.
Creatures of the Night.......2006-04-08
This is an awesome book for your children to read! It's a fun storyline with cute illustrations of nocturnal animals. It's nice to have a book that exposes kids to animals and a fun outdoor environment.
A children's picturebook about the various creatures of the night.......2006-03-13
Creatures Of The Night is a children's picturebook about the various creatures of the night, who come out under the cover of dark to forage for food, and hoot, howl or serenade. The rhyming verse and endearing color artwork of animals under a black night sky make Creatures of the Night an ideal read-aloud story to young children, especially just before bedtime. "Returning home to open arms, / Are the creatures of the day, / As the creatures of the night / Come out to run and play."

Excellent primer on the enduring myth of vampires........2004-06-04
This small, well organized, and beautifully illustrated book is an unexpectedly thorough and complete reference on vampire lore in Western culture.
Succinctly written and carefully researched, it presents an entertaining and informative account on the mythical and religious origins of vampires, citing innumerable traditional, historical and literary sources, from the earliest civilizations to the present day. It also includes a discussion on the evolution and permanence of vampires in our culture through literature and films, featuring an exhaustive filmography of the most often dramatized of all fictional characters.
For those interested in pursuing a deeper study of the subject, the bibliographical reference titled Further Reading and the List of Illustrations, both located in the back of the book, will prove to be invaluable resources.

Very Good and Colorful.......1999-07-16
I thought that this book was good, however it isn't in depth and is short. I liked looking at the pictures but the information were just summaries. The book was colorful and interesting, yet it was a lot of show and not enough information. I think that it is a very good "beginners" book for first time Vampire readers. I think that all who read will most likely enjoy it.
Informative but not an indepth look at the vampire legend........1999-05-14
Vampires: Restless Creatures of the Night is a brief and concise history of the vampire legend. Well researched and richly illustrated, this book is most valuable for its collection of literary and artistic references which can be found within its' pages. It is clearly a very modern book in that it skims the surface of a great deal of information without committing itself to any kind of opinion. It is however, an entertaining and informative read.
Vampires in Film and In Real Life (History).......1999-02-10
This book is great if you're into Vampire Films, Stoker's Dracula novels, or if you're into the Masquerade. This colorful book gives you the history of Real Life Vampires from where it started. Not alot of people realize that vampires are this real. Stoker actually based his books on such real life mortal vampires as Elizabeth Bathory and Vlad the Impaler. It also gives you a timeline of vampire movies. With also summaries of the movies and pictures. Including my personal favorite: Nosferatu. So check this book out, it's colorful and its great if you have any interests in vampires, Vampire Movies, or Stoker's books.

Great wealth of info.......2005-02-13
I really like the fact that the transparencies actually lead to mystery (in the book on lions you mostly have pictures of lions starting to move and on the other page they arrived to their goal; this book is different). The facts about owls and bats are all shown, and the most important species are represented. I like how they managed to choose the most important things and not swamp the reader with too many technical details.
