Book Description
The end begins with a viral outbreak unlike anything mankind has ever encountered before. The infected are subject to delirium, fever, a dramatic increase in violent behavior, and a one-hundred percent mortality rate. Death. But it doesn't end there. The victims return from death to walk the earth. When a massive military operation fails to contain the plague of the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic. In one fell swoop, the necessities of life become much more basic. Gone are petty everyday concerns. Gone are the amenities of civilized life. Yet a single law of nature remains: Live, or die. Kill, or be killed. On one side of the world, a battle-hardened General surveys the remnants of his command: a young medic, a veteran photographer, a brash Private, and dozens of refugees, all are his responsibility-all thousands of miles from home. Back in the United States, an Army Colonel discovers the darker side of Morningstar virus and begins to collaborate with a well-known journalist to leak the information to the public... The Morningstar Saga has begun.

Not the worst, but close.......2007-10-02
I have a serious thing for zombies. If it is about the undead I will read it or watch it. Because of this I have read a whole lot of horrible books. While this is certainly not the worst of the genre it does come fairly close.
The novel is grammatically sound, sadly an unusual trait in most zombie books. This does help an awful lot, but it certainly isn't enough to overcome paper thin characters throughout the book. I mean it, there isn't one well developed character in the entire book. Transparent, poorly researched caricatures of people are all you get, and it is often enough to make you cringe. There's the gruff general who is a natural leader, the plucky red cross nurse, and enough soldiers stolen from various movies to fill a small stadium.
Another glaring problem is the lazy story development. This book is made up of long strings of ridiculously convenient plot devices that carry the story from A to B. It reads like the author had a an idea for the beginning and end of a story and decided to slap together enough filler to get you from one to the other.
I gave the novel two stars because I think this is the author's first book. Since his technical writing skills aren't too bad there is room for him to pull it together and learn how to write at least marginally interesting characters and plot lines. Considering how god awful much of this genre is, it is at least a bit refreshing to find a writer that knows the difference between 'there' 'their' and 'they're'.
Book.......2007-09-22
This is a strong book that always keeps yo guessing and on the edge of your seat. I think that this author writes some nice pieces of written masterpiece! I will be buying more!
Plague of the Dead review.......2007-09-04
If you enjoy Zombie stories like I do (guilty pleasure) then you will really enjoy this one. This book has all of the attributes of a world-wide zombie apocalypse. It incorporates a causative agent and the in-effective efforts of the military. The story centers on several different characters and their experiences. It is a complete story but could very well have another book following the surviving characters.
Lot of Action and Survival.......2007-08-24
The story takes the reader through Africa, the Middle-East and finally to the United States. The story becomes more compelling as the number of soldiers and civilian refugees dwindles and they are forced to find supplies where they can.
If only I could have been better convinced that the battle at Suez was truly un-winnable, then I would have given this book 5 stars. That wasn't even the key turning point in the story that it seemed to be; The world was lost before then.
The story is very good and I am glad I read it. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Good read.......2007-08-03
I quite enjoyed this book. I'm relatively new to zombie books, so I couldn't say which ideas were new and which aren't, but I liked the concept of having two different types of zombies. The parallels drawn between the Morningstar virus and other viruses also made sense to me.
I had a couple of minor issues with the book. There were a fair number of spelling/printing errors in my copy (such as Pacific Northwest not being capitalized). Not the fault of the author, nor did they detract from my enjoyment. But the copy editor needs to double check his work.
*Spoiler Warning*
The other issue is a pet peeve of mine. I grew up in northern California - five hours north of San Francisco. From where I lived, it was another hour and a half to two hours to the Oregon border. If the Ramage was headed to San Francisco, and they were dropped off a little north of the city - even 2 hundred miles north - they would have been crossing northern California, not Oregon. Not a major issue, but it seems like there's a lot of folks that forget that San Francisco is in the middle of the state. Like I said, pet peeve.
Still a good book, though, and I look forward to the sequel.

Great, easy to read book........2007-06-27
Does not get too bogged down in details and tells you what you need to know. at the same time, if you want to know the details, this book gives you a helping hand and points you to places where you can become even more knowledgable.
KHALID, from Kuwait.......2007-05-30
I have tried a lot of investing books but never been so lucky to have one of this kind. a very neat explanation and step by step guide for novel investors. I would recommend this book for any one who would like to step his or her first steps toward right investing career. a second step is always little easier than the first one, I would like you to read and understand what Pat Dorsey is trying to explain to you and then you may expand your knowledge with more in-depth finance/investing books.
Good luck for your investing.
good book.......2007-04-20
I bought this book because I wanted to understand every detail of fundamentals. Author did not describe all lines that are in income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow and he jumps around a little bit. I think book has useful reminders how to better read SEC filings and what to look for. Companies author mentions are in completely different place today and that gives us all reminder that things are not written in stone and changes comes quickly. Writting useful book on this topic is not an easy task, so I would recommend this book as supplemental reading. You might find here some useful information.
Excellent Book For People Comfortable With Math.......2007-04-03
Dorsey is one of the people behind the Morningstar system for evaluating mutual funds, stocks and electronically traded funds - the system that has made Morningstar one of the most respected names in investing.
Dorsey presents the nitty-gritty of investing in this book. Most of the book is very understandable, and is the perfect book for anyone wanting to learn how to invest effectively in the stock market. There is probably no better general introduction to investing on the market.
The only difficulty is the material from chapters 3 - 6, where Dorsey explains the math and concepts behind all of the letters you see when you look at market information (like P/E Ratio, P/S Ratio, ROI, ROE, etc.). It can be a bit intimidating, but (a) you can read the book and skip these chapters with no problem, and (b) it is worth the effort to at least look at the math, since Dorsey tells you what figures are helpful, what figures are not, what figures are very important in evaluating an investment, and what figures are misleading.
Before you invest $10 in the market, spend the money on this book. Your portfolio will love you for it.
Book that will give you basis for your decision.......2007-04-02
This is by far the best stock market book I read. I read a lot of good books, Intelligent Investor, One up on wall street. The Warren Buffett Way, The Essays of Warren Buffett, The little book that beats the market, and this is by far the most helpful ccause it guides you step by step and it really goes into details. Most of the books just narrates with generalities. I really like the part where it teaches you how to look look at the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow, how to compute the future cash flow and get its present value and how to compute the intrinsic value. After discusing the procedures, it completes it with real life example the goes tru step by step. After each chapter, theres a summary. Highly Recommended!

Great info to help you understand the fund you are considering for investment.......2007-09-25
While many people buy mutual funds because they find them easier than building their own portfolio of individual stocks, in fact buying into these funds is in some ways more complex than buying individual company stocks. How do you know what the fund in invested in (companies and sectors), fees, turnover, who the manager is, what their performance has been, how the fund has performed relative to its peers, and much more? It is not an easy task. This handy book provides you with loads of great information for 500 funds picked by Morningstar.
This isn't to say that you should necessarily buy the funds listed here. Morningstar also includes funds you should probably avoid (you have to make your own choices as to what is right for you). One of the interesting things I notices is that simply because something has a four or five star rating doesn't mean that you should buy the fund. This is due to the past performance versus future return probability. It might well be that a well performing fund is now trading at a high price and that the likely future return cannot justify the price. So, the analyst rating also has to be balanced.
The editors have packed a huge amount of information onto each of these pages. You get a snapshot of governance and management (with a stewardship score), a chart of performance, a graph with an historical profile, a star rating including risk for several periods, a portfolio analysis, and a few paragraphs providing Morningstar's take on the fund, and contact information. In the back of the book are several lists that slice and dice the various funds different ways according to specific criteria.
Since funds do not remain static for the entire year, another nice feature of the book is that you can download up to 50 fresh charts during the calendar year. One word of caution that I learned by hard experience is that if you block pop-ups, you need to make an exception for Morningstar. You will try to download the new chart, your count will decrement, but you won't get the chart because you browser will have blocked the pop-up containing the new chart! That was a tad frustrating.
Terrific and interesting information.

Customer Reviews:
This is a wonderful healthy cookbook.......2007-01-07
This cookbook really explains why foods affect people differently and shows how, with delicious recipes, to balance yourself with many healthy Indian style dishes. So far I have tried the 15 min veg curry, Plain indian rice, Veg Barley soup, sesame sweeties and curried parsnips and carrots. Every recipe has been delicious - my son 11 is a big curry fan now. Americans definitely don't know how to use spices!! This book will show you how. I highly recommend it.
The deeper side of cooking.......2005-10-17
This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!
Because of various health problems I was always advised to try different diets but never liked what I cooked. It was always the most boring task. This book has changed my attitude in the most profound ways, where I begin to perceive food not only as a source of nourishment but also a way to understand my own body's energetical needs and how to heal it. It is the most interesting fact to learn the connection between the food and my emotions. Through these quick, simple and most delicious recipes I am learning how to create foods which calm me when I need calming, ground me when I need grounding and cool or warm me depending on the season and the balance in my energy pattern. But it's not only that, I can even effect a positive emotional and digestive change in my husband through dishes that are meant for his type!
This book is slowly turning me from "cook hater" into "cook lover" and I cannot wait to try all of those recipes. The pumpkin or sweet potato halva recipe had us on our knees. It is sublime. The Indian tastes are simply like swimming in a deep ocean while the American cooking is more like swimming in a small and shallow pond. Why not jump in on the deeper side of life?
Great recipes!.......2005-10-06
This is a fantastic cookbook for experienced cooks wanting to explore both Indian cooking as well as Ayurvedic cooking. I've learned a lot about the appropriate use and balance of traditional Indian spices.
However, if you are relatively new to cooking, you may find the recipes to be a bit difficult. They are pared down for those who are more intuitive with cooking, but you will not have a step-by-step guide on how to do each task, like you might find in grocery store recipe magazines or Betty Crocker cookbooks. I have also run across occasional omissions of ingredients in the directions, and some of the grain recipes call for too much water (way too much).
On the whole, this book has a great net benefit. In fact, it's the only book I've been using for the last 3 weeks. Indian grocers sell incredibly affordable pantry items, and the food is simply wonderful. Please give this book a try!
Good Tastes, Love and Wisdom.......2005-07-20
This cookbook has been one of my favorites ever since it first came out in 1990. Now 15 years later, it is ripped, worn, bent, curry stained and I'm buying a new copy. The recipes taste great, have greatly enhanced my family's health and vitality and been enjoyed by many friends. But it's not just a cookbook. The authors bless us with an Ayurvedic perspective on diet, constitution, lifestyle and body/mind/spirit healing and also clarify contemporary health issues related to sugar, dairy products and soyfoods in the light of ancient wisdom. This book is beautifully written, intelligently conceived and vibrates with wisdom and love.
Cook book.......2004-12-28
If you have read Tibetan Ayurveda you will find a lot of similarities with this book. This book is Indian Ayurveda. The authors have made a small confusion between Neem leaves and curry leaves. This book will teach you about the ancient art of Ayurvedia and its benefits. You will have a nice understanding about various aspects of Indian Cooking, the ingredients and the way they make an extremely healthy food system, whether it is your breakfast, lunch or dinner. With all the additional information on Ayurveda, it will become extremely useful if you ever decide to do your own delicious cooking.
Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach. I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www.S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this.

Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners.......2006-07-10
I found this book disappointing, and much prefer her previous book.
Great Guide, OK recipes.......2004-06-02
This book is interesting to read and great help in deciding what to eat to balance your vikrities (imbalances). You start out learning some Ayurvedic basics and then you can test yourself to find out what your dosha (constitution) is. Then you learn what foods and tastes agrivate or calm that dosha. It tells you a little bit about what the symptoms of an imbalance might be, but I got more descriptive information about that on the Internet. One reason I like this book is because me and my fiance are different constitutions, and this book tells us which foods will calm/ balance us both. There are simple instructions on most recipes that explain how to modify the recipe so that it suits a person with a different constitution. It also has codes for what seasons to eat what food, and every chapter or so has interesting blurbs about different foods and philosophies. That part I enjoy. And from my experience, Ayurveda WORKS. Fast and precisely.
Feeling flighty, hyper, dried out and flaky? Balance your Vata. Feeling irritable, is your skin oily, have heartburn, or an infection? Balance your Pitta. Are you overweight, or sluggish? Balance your Kapha. Eating ayurvedicly will heal all/ any of those (and many other) ailments very quickly. I haven't been sick at all since I started paying attention to my ayurvedic needs, and I used to get sick all the time. I am a Pitta person, and by eating to calm pitta imbalances, I wiped out acne in a short time (a week) - something prescription creams and antibiotics didn't help with at all. In doing so, I also managed to become a less angry, irritable person. But remember that this is a continuous process. Balancing one dosha can offset another. That's why its such a fine art and requires years of training to become a certified practitioner. This (and other ayurveda books) have helped me become more in tune with my body and mind. I also notice a lot of other people's imbalances, and surprisingly I am now able to understand other people's mood changes, personalities, and tendencies by determining their dosha and their imbalances. Granted, I didn't get this way just from reading this book alone, but this is the one that sparked my interest to read more about ayurveda elsewhere. I'd definitely get this book with another book on Ayurvedic philosophy, signs and symptoms of imbalances, and other non-dietic ways to balance your dosha (like yoga, oil massage and pranayama). I'd recommend maybe one by Robert Svaboda or Deepak Chopra.
The recipes are all very easy to make. I've tried quite a few of them, everything from their fruit bowls to pasta sauces. Unfortunately, they're not all ones I enjoy eating... I eat them more for their healing aspects rather than for their tastiness. However, from what I've heard, tastier ayurvedic recipes exist.
I also found a few spelling errors, and a medical discrepency. This book says Pitta people should eat/ favor apricots while every other source says pitta people should avoid apricots. Of course, many ayurvedic professionals disagree with certain things, but I found this confusing and discreditting to the author.
Overall, I like the book but think it could offer more in terms of knowledge, and tastier recipes.
Helpful!.......2002-11-14
This was one of the cookbooks used as reference for a six hour introductory workshop on Ayurveda that I attended. I had a chance to leaf through it, along with three other cookbooks, and this one seemed to be the most useful with a good background included on the basic concepts of ayurveda. I have USED it! As anyone who has a cookbook collection will recognize, this is the ultimate recommendation!
There are better Ayurvedic cookbooks.......2002-02-21
I own this book (ACFW) and The Ayurvedic Cookbook (TAC) and I must say that I rarely open this one, while I use at least 3 recipes out of TAC every week. The problem is that while this book stays true to the principles of Ayurvedia, the recipes aren't as tasty as they could be. This book tends to follow the Western macrobiotic ideals of "steam some rice, steam some veggies, let's eat", where TAC uses a wide array of spices. Comparing side by side similiar recipes, TAC's carrots and parsnips has about a half dozen spices, while ACFW's carrots, parsnips and peas has none. Which do you want to eat? This comparison is valid for many other recipes as well, which is somewhat disturbing given the importance TAC places on spices as a part of Ayurvedia. This book seems aimed at the more political/masochistic Western vegetarian (there is a sidebar on being nice to meat-eaters) who sees bland food as some kind of right of passage. While there's good information on Ayurvedia, you can do better with The Ayurvedic Cookbook.
Excellent!.......2001-12-02
This cookbook provides a thorough explanation of Ayurvedic concepts, including the 5 elements and 3 constitutions or doshas. Each recipe comes with a -/+/0 to indicate that a certain dish can calm, aggravate, or have a neutral effect on each dosha. Living in a multi-dosha household, this feature alone makes the book one of my favorites! The recipes and ideas in this help meld ayurvedic principles with traditional American life.

Customer Reviews:
If you are interested in buying individual stocks, this is a good place to spend some of your research time and money.......2007-03-02
There is an old saying that people spend more time studying which refrigerator to buy than how they invest for their retirement. It is a sad saying because it is probably true in more cases than we would like to admit. There is also an awful lot of evidence that people are more often better off with a very low cost index fund than in picking stocks or even investing in mutual funds. Why? Because over the long haul, there aren't many who can consistently provide higher than market returns. And it is even more difficult to identify who those folks will be in advance.
Still, it is nice to look for the next Microsoft, or to figure out when it would be a good time to get into a good company. What too many people do is buy after the run has started and they end up providing capital gains possibilities for others. You may have heard of the greater fool theory. If not, feel free to email me and I can explain it to you.
While the web is full of information about companies, one has to do an awful lot of analysis and develop one's own perspectives about when to buy, when to hold, and when to sell. Again, during the learning curve one makes it possible for others to make money by taking your hard earned money away from you in transaction costs and in helping you buy high and sell low.
This terrific book has several virtues for the person wanting to buy some stock in companies that are likely to be good. However, the authors don't simply list 500 stocks and say, "Have at it." Far from it. They provide a very interesting page on each one of the companies and that page is crammed full of valuable information.
The obvious eye catcher are the star ratings. However, they do not say whether or not this is a sound company. Morningstar uses its star ratings to communicate the relative attractiveness of the company as an investment at its (then) current price given all the other aspects of its condition and position. I also appreciate the fair value price (the discounted cash flow value divided by the number of outstanding shares as Morningstar has evaluated their likely future cash flows). The last close, consider buy, consider sell, and yield are also interesting indicators for a person trying to understand that company.
Morningstar also provides a brief summary of the business, a rating of the stewardship of present management and why they gave that rating. There is also a good amount of historical financial information, ratios, competitors, comparisons of financial performance to those competitors, and about a third of a page "thesis" on the condition and prospects of that company as the named Morningstar analyst sees it on the date given for that article.
There are also about fifty pages of interesting short articles at the front of the book that explain these reports to the reader, the thinking behind some of their concepts like the competitive moat size. These pages also provide all the companies simply by name. Some are also singled out for being attractive and other for not being least attractive. The companies are also presented by sector and also the performance of various market sectors are also given. The back of the book has a helpful glossary.
Now, we all know that financial information becomes dated very quickly. So, Morningstar provides access to their online services that have more up to date information. When you buy this book you get access to fifty reports you can download at no additional cost before the end of December 2007. This is a very nice way to overcome the aging factor of the information in a book.
Still, this book is a wonderful study for anyone wanting to learn more about any of these 500 companies, business students, and prep work for folks getting ready to invest. It is quite interesting to compare what Morningstar thought months ago and what current markets have shown about those judgments.
A very useful and helpful book. Morningstar also offers other books in this series for bonds and mutual funds.
A great resource to supplement your research.......2006-12-21
It's best to do your own research first, but of course a second opinion can never hurt. That's how I used this book for most part, but also got some ideas. I used this book for an experiment; I made up a mock porfolio of stocks I had done research on, and then took 16 totally random companies that this pick had rated with 5 stars, which is the highest rating. 12 of the 16 companies made money, while 4 didn't. Over 9 months, I gained about 10.5%, which doesn't factor in dividends, or fees for that matter. On the other hand, the stocks that I had actually researched, did about the same, 10%.
Overall, the book gets a 4.5. They strike a good balance between information, and quantity of top stocks. A beginner may not enjoy this book off the bat, because there are no explanations of the numbers, but after you learn a few things, the rest falls into place. They have the basic numbers for all the companies listed, but certainly, by the time the book comes out, those numbers will have changed, and at years' end, they will most likely be quite different. The vital info is across the top, and makes for quick reference.
Do your own research, use this book for a second opinion. Morningstar is without a doubt one of the most trusted names in the business.
Excellent tool for the patient investor.......2006-03-09
This is without doubt an excellent starting point for investors (traders beware, this is of not much use to you!). By using traditional value analysis and their own business model analysis, Morningstar provides a "fair/intrisinc value" along with what it considers are "Buy below" and "Sell above" prices. In addition, the analysts assign a "moat" for the company reflecting its competitive advantage. Based on the current price and the fair value, the analysts provide star ratings for each stock. The book provides all this information and more for 500 stocks. The early parts of the book provide information on their methodology. The book also organizes their stocks into the sectors and according to different parameters such as price/earnings ratio, etc. While 500 stocks may be considered to be too big a sample for a "short list" for investments, it is still extremely valuable. For the price, no other source can provide such detailed, independent research. A must buy for any investor.
Let Experts pick the winners for you !.......2006-02-04
Morningstar grades the stocks in its universe with one to five stars. This book has one page overviews of the best 500 stocks in that universe, rated and discussed in some detail.
Morningstar uses a "value investor" approach to stock evaluation.
I use this book in conjunction with Morningstar's StockInvestor newsletter, and I am pleased with the results.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for Beginnners.......2007-08-26
I am new to stocks and mutual funds. I just read some basic online tutorials. I have no problems in understanding the concepts in the book. Very well Written. I should have bought this book years back.
Very comprehensive.......2007-01-10
The book reads somewhere between a text book and a general description of mutual funds and bonds. I found it to be very informative, well organized and believe I have a much better understanding of how mutual funds work. Also, Crhistine is pretty cute.
I'd give six stars if I could!.......2006-06-26
This book is clear, concise, and effective. I've read the first four chapters so far, and it has explained everything I've wanted to know about choosing mutual funds. I was absolutely ecstatic when I saw that the chapter on mutual fund management has an overview of the pros and cons of a number of the well-known fund companies.
One of the reviewers was complaining that this book relies too heavily on Morningstar research. Well, first of all, Morningstar is one of the premier analysis firms in the industry, and as such they have a wealth of great information. Secondly, I have yet to see a place in the book where they ask you to pay for anything. A good portion of the Morningstar website is free, and the book mentions a Morningstar mutual fund book you can get from public libraries. The reviewer also complains about the Morningstar 5-star rating system. The book explains that the star ratings can be used as a screening tool, and stresses the many other factors that should be considered when evaluating a fund. When used in conjunction with other objective criteria, the star rating is a powerful tool to evaluate past returns and volatility.
With all of this in mind, if you are absolutely new to investing, you should become familiar with certain basic investing terms and concepts before reading this book. I highly recommend either The Wall Street Journal's Complete Guide to Personal Finance or The WSJ's Complete Money and Investing Guidebook. For most people, I would say the Guide to Personal Finance would be a good primer.
Deserves "Analyst Pick" Status.......2006-03-01
Excellent book for learning all about mutual fund investing from the very best in the analysis business. It is a well written and organized guide that is easy to read and understand. All major aspects of investing in mutual funds are covered, including how to "buy low and sell high".
Good book, but I would recommend another........2006-02-12
This book provided a good broad-based overview of mutual funds and endorses modern portfolio theory. The idea being that a properly allocated portfolio of mutual funds with a focus towards long-term investing will work the best for most investors building their retirement savings. Properly balanced over the years, this style will work better than that of active investors trying to chase hot funds and time the market since very few active managers succeed over the long haul.
If you were to look at a "Top 10" performing mutual fund from 10 or 5 years ago, chances are it isn't a Top 10 fund anymore so you shouldn't buy into the hype of today's current "hot fund". If it were such a solid fund, shouldn't it be a solid fund 10 years later? But this book and similar ones feel that while an active investor and a hot fund may have one good year, they probably have bad years as well, and they probably can't keep up their above-average performance over 30 years.
I read this book along with "All About Asset Allocation" by Richard Ferri and "The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You'll Ever Need: The Way Smart Money Invests Today" by Larry Swedroe all of which cover similar ground (an overview of mutual funds, an overview of modern portfolio theory). My favorite is the Swedroe book because of it's straightforward reading style, and it goes a little more in-depth than the Morningstar book.
The Morningstar book only gets 3 stars because unfortunately Morningstar has a product to sell: namely, Morningstar itself. Morningstar makes money buy getting you to use their services (such as their web site) and rely on their ranking system and advice all of which comes through in this book. Morningstar's 5-Star ranking system can create some of the problems Hot Top 10 Funds lists create: they tempt everyone into thinking if it's a 5-star fund it HAS to be good so why not buy the hot 5-star fund that posted a 30% return last year? Why would anyone buy a 5-star fund with a 12% return? But not all of Morningstar's 5-star funds stay 5-star funds so you have to look past the hype when deciding for yourself if a fund is good for you for the next 5, 10, 20 years. The book was okay but be mindful of the Morningstar product placement. The Swedroe book gets my recommendation.

Book Description
From the pages of Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN comes the story of Lucifer Morningstar, the former Lord of Hell, who is unexpectedly called back into action after he is given amission from Heaven. This tenth volume in the series sees the war in Heaven reach its universe-shaking conclusion as Lucifer gathers together the forces of Heaven, Hell and everyone in between for a final battle.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing series... but not the end!.......2006-09-04
Carey's meditation on heaven, hell, will, creation, and responsibility reaches its conclusion -- but not its end -- as Lucifer fights in Heaven for a second time.
This is not the end of the series, however. There will be one more trade collecting the final issues 70-75, hopefully coming out soon.
Lucifer remains one of the finest works in comics, well worth checking out for those of you who enjoy deeply philosophical writing combined with tremendous storytelling and art.
CLIMACTIC END TO A BRILLIANT SERIES!.......2006-08-30
"Lucifer: Morningstar" is the latest trade paperback collection and brings the long-running series to its apocalyptic conclusion. The book collects issues #62 - 69 of the celebrated Vertigo comic series and the climax to the war in Heaven storyline that has been running over the course of the last few collections. When Lucifer first came out back in 2000 I was quite skeptical. DC had dealt with tales of Heaven & Hell with titles like Swamp Thing and Hellblazer before but here was Hell's ruler in his own title. Well darned if DC didn't pull it off and deliver a fallen angel who managed to gain the sympathy of the reader.
As the book opens, Lilith, the first woman, and the architect of Heaven, is leading her children, the Lilim against the forces of The Silver City. God has disappeared and Lilith means to destroy his throne, the Primum Mobile, to prevent God from returning home. Meanwhile Lucifer gathers his own forces that include Lilith's daughter Mazikeen, and the human woman Elaine, herself now a divine power and maker of her own form of creation.
Lucifer visits Hell's new ruler, Christopher Rudd, in the hopes of convincing him toaid Heaven in their battle with Lilith. This puts Rudd in a sticky situation. His own goal is to eliminate the division between Hell and Heaven and do away with this class system. Think of him as a 60's, hippie commune leader! Rudd wants change but he also doesn't want to see Heaven, and all creation destroyed as Lilith does.
One element I love is Mike Carey's inclusion of the Fenris Wolf as an ally of Lillith. The Fenris Wolf is a Norse myth and he, or it is included as the last remnant of a forgotten pantheon of Gods, who has survived by accident as a force of pure destruction. A clever mix of Christian and pagan beliefs!
The battle is of epic proportions...making things like Infinite Crisis seem like an afternoon tea party. This isn't a battle for the world, but for all creation. Carey's depiction of the Almighty is interesting and a bit humorous in a dry way. He's certainly no burning bush! The art is uniformly great throughout and features the talents of Colleen Doran, Peter Gross, Ryan Kelly, and Mike Kaluta. Kaluta's interlude piece is hilariously brilliant.
While the series does end the story doesn't. Many questions about the new order of Heaven, Hell, and the world itself are left unanswered for perhaps a later series. Carey's epic will remain one of the more talked about comics for many years to come and it will be interesting to see what he, or another writer, has in store for us in the future.

Good book on valuing stocks.......2007-06-16
The book is one of a series by Morningstar. This particular describes the various accounting sheets (balance, income, etc.) used. It has two quite worthwhile chapters on economic moats and management quality. This is a good reference for investors trying to determine quality and value in a company.
Some of the accounting sheets printed lightly, and with the small print, are hard to read. The only other recommendation would be to have an index.
Written by a person who has been there and done that........2006-01-31
Whatever it takes to survive in these turbulent times is what an investor had better do, and Mr. Larson offers some tried and true investment paths to place your hard-earned dollars on.
