5 out of 5 stars Thank you so very much!.......2006-02-17

When I began looking for advice on training my son, I purchased a book that stated I could do it in one day. After reading this book, I decided that, although the theory behind the book was somewhat acceptable, some of the apparent mind sets were contrary to the way that my husband and I decided to raise our child. I have never been ashamed of my child because he was in diapers- he is two and half! I do not have multiple children, but this book helped me realize that my instincts (sp) are correct for my son. We chose this caring and loving method for helping our son. This experience was not filled with anxiety or fear for either of us! Thank you again!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book from another mom of triplets plus newborn.......2006-01-27

Maria's advice is fantastic and to the point. As a mother of triplets (just 2 years old) and a newborn, facing potty training is scary. Maria's book showed me it is possible and gave me choices as to how I might approach it. I loved the schedule of her day at the end of the book. It seemed so similar to my own day! I'm now feeling up to the challenge thanks to simple, no nonsense advice.

I also have Maria's book about 101 Indoor Activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers. We are going to be making the Purple People Eater soon!

Maria, Thanks for taking the time to document things that worked for you!

5 out of 5 stars Triple stars from this triplet mom!.......2005-09-05

This book is awesome! It's very easy to read, easy to follow, etc. Has great, practical tips to talk you thru the whole nightmare of potty training multiples. It helped me see that potty training is a relaxed process and not something I needed to stress over. I have 2 done and one more to go... thanks to the author!

This book is terrific. It's full of practical and creative ways to deal with potty training. I had a difficult experience with my first child - I wish this guide was available then.

Book Description

A thrilling, epic story from a major new international talent.

Mamo and LaMamo are twin brothers living in the small Nigerian village of Keti, where their domineering father controls their lives. With high hopes the twins attempt to flee from home, but only LaMamo escapes successfully and is able to live their dream of becoming a soldier who meets beautiful women. Mamo, the sickly, awkward twin, is doomed to remain in the village with his father. Gradually he comes out of his father's shadow and gains local fame as a historian, and, using Plutarch's Parallel Lives as his model, he embarks on the ambitious project of writing a "true" history of his people. But when the rains fail and famine rages, religious zealots incite the people to violence—and LaMamo returns to fight the enemy at home.

A novel of ardent loyalty, encroaching modernity, political desire, and personal liberation, Measuring Time is a heart-wrenching history of Nigeria, portrayed through the eyes of a single family.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Insight into Cultural Norms.......2007-07-26

A historical book in which the reader gets a good insight into the cultural norms of Keti.It is also in large part an account of how the protagonist of the story, Mamo, sets out to write the history of Keti. In other words it seems to be the author himself writing about writing this very book.
Mamo and LaMamo are twins whose mother died at their birth. Their father Lamang's sister - Aunt Marina - takes care of them. Mamo has sickle-cell anaemia and is constantly sick. LaMamo is the physically stonger of the two and is preferred by their father, although there is a palpable distance between father and sons.
LaMamo becomes a mercenary in the brutal civil war in Liberia and loses an eye. He plans to marry Bintou - a young woman that he had saved from being raped. Mamo stays in Keti and is commisioned through the Waziri to write the biography of the Mai.
Sometimes the book was humorous, sometimes sad and other times philosophical. Many excellent descriptions although sometimes I felt the story needed to pick up some steam. The well scam and Prince were helpful in this regard(302). I liked the discussion of tradition that Mamo had with his uncle Ilya, who states that behind most customs there is a "motive rigged to serve some elite, some self-styled custodian of our culture." He warns Mamo to be wary of exclusion, which is never the answer."It is what gives rise to facism and all sorts of racial and religious fundamentalism. We are pure, you are not; we are superior, you are inferior." Very well put!

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom and survival.......2007-06-21

"Measuring Time" is the story of twin brothers, their family and the people that shaped them. Living in rural Nigeria, village life and the natural environment add atmosphere and context. Habila's story-telling talent are evident in numerous ways. His own narrative of people and events is interwoven with those of his protagonist Mamo, who in later years writes about the people around him and thereby becomes a recorder of the local history. Giving Mamo the dual voice of the growing boy/young adult of the story time line and the retrospective commentary of the future biographer, the author creates an even richer portrayal of the main characters and the times they live in.

Mamo, the first born of the twins, inherited sickle cell anemia from his mother, who died in child birth. From an early age Mamo, fragile and prone to health crises, does not expect to grow into adulthood. This makes him reflective and withdrawn, always waiting for something to happen: first death, later on fame, fortune or something else. Expectations and dreams change over time. The younger twin, LaMamo, on the other hand, is a rambunctious youth who "acts before he thinks". Together they make a complete person, one balancing the other's character.

Among the many things uniting them, hatred for their father stands above all else. They are convinced that he made their mother's life so miserable that she died at a young age. Fortunately, they are taken to their uncle Ilya for the first few years of their lives. Then auntie Marina, their father's sister, comes to live with them, dedicating her life to the well being of the boys. Eventually, the young men plan their escape: there are wars being fought in neighbouring countries and they believe that they can make their fortune. However, Mamo has another fever attack brought on by his anemia and, at the designated time, only LaMamo can leave. Mamo remains behind and withdraws even more from his surroundings. His father ignores him, but fortunately uncle Iliya takes him under his intellectual and emotional wing. He encourages Mamo to continue his studies and, later on, to join his community school as a history teacher. There he crosses paths with his childhood friend, Zara. His life takes a new turn as a result, in more ways than one. Meanwhile, LaMamo's progress or lack thereof in fighting other people's wars is conveyed through long letters to his brother that arrive sporadically. Will they ever meet again?

This is not just the story of one family, although the individuals stand in the centre of events. Uncle Ilija, who fought in several wars, has turned all his energy into maintaining the village school and to bring understanding and wisdom to those around him. The twin's father, a wealthy businessman, attempts a political career with mixed results, allowing the author to expose the many problems of the political system in the recently turned independent state of Nigeria. Habila has not only created vivid characters that stay in the reader's mind, he has skilfully broadened and deepened the narrative to include a rich account of Nigerian tradition and customs as they have evolved in this part of the country. Keeping his story personal and centred on a group of distinct characters, he finds a sensitive balance between the intimate and the historical context. His evocative power of description, whether of landscapes or human beings, is complemented by his skill as a story teller in the rich African tradition. As a human interest story it reaches audiences beyond those interested in Africa. [Friederike Knabe]

5 out of 5 stars Another Dragonlance masterpeice!.......2007-10-06

Ever since my bf introduced me to Dragonlance I have been reading them non stop. These 3 books are awesome! They really are very action packed and make you sit back and go WOW. I didnt get sad with these 3 books at all I was more sucked in and sometimes got so outraged by the actions of some of the evil people (you know who Im talking about) These are a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Everything good fantasy should be.......2001-10-18

It is almost impossible to describe how wonderful this book is. There is nothing about it that is not absolutly perfect. It is absolutly incredible what Margaret Weis and Tracy HIckman have written. I wish I could sit here and type out the whole plot, but unfortunatly, I can't. But I will say this. The characters are beyond belife. Anybody who didn't worship Raistlin before will now. He is most definatly the greatest fantasy character ever written. Crysania is good too, especially in Test of the Twins. Dalamar Nightson, Raistlin's apprentice, is one of the better characters, and is part of why this trilogy is so incredible. No one has ever written anythig close to this. Everyone should read this book, it is so wonderful. Personnaly, I've read it so many time I can almost recite it, and it never gets worse. Please, for the love of Raistlin, BUY THIS BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Do not buy these books!.......2000-05-20

Off limits! Never buy these wonderful adventures. If you do, you will ever after be disappointed in everything else you read. It's truly sad to stumble through the rest of your life searching for a comparable read as lively and passionate as this series by the masters of adventure, Weis and Hickman. OK, you've been warned.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Novel!.......2000-03-14

By far, these are the best set of books that I have read in a VERY long time. I agree with some of the other people that the contents, especially the ending should NOT be reveiled in an email. I think that such a wonderful book should be read by the reader & not told to you by some goof. Experience the wonderful world of Krynn for yourself & you'll find you'll be back again & again & again.... :) Enjoy them all but start with Chronicles first! :)

5 out of 5 stars NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT!.......1999-06-18

If you are reading this and thinking about buying, STOP READING THIS AND DO IT. I really can't think of any better book to read (other than the Chronicles) to get you started on fantasy. These books are easier to read and understand than most Tolkien novels. Caramon and Raistlin show the true struggle between Good, Evil, Love and Hate. Tasslehoff Burrfoot, our friendly Kender, also plays a MAJOR role, which I am glad to say. Just one more word......AWESOME!

Book Description

A boxed set of three core titles from the Dragonlance saga.

This slip-covered gift set contains three key titles from the Dragonlance saga: Time of the Twins, War of the Twins, and Test of the Twins, all of which were authored by New York Times bestselling authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. These are three of the strongest-selling Dragonlance backlist titles.

In Time of the Twins, Tasslehoff, Raistlin, Caramon, and the priestess Crysania travel back in time to visit the city of Istar before the Cataclysm in an attempt to avert disaster, while Raistlin plots to seize the magical power of the ancient wizard Fistandantilus. In Test of the Twins, Raistlin casts a magical spell to open a Portal to the Abyss. At the same instant his brother Caramon operates a magical device that throws Caramon and Tasslehoff into an unexpected place. And in War of the Twins, Raistlin prepares to enter the Abyss and challenge the Dark Queen herself, only do discover that he is caught in a time loop from which there seems to be no escape.

5 out of 5 stars A good read!.......2007-09-25

I love Dragonlance a lot! This trilogy was not as interesting as the first one Cronicles. however it was very good. If you like Raislin and the story of him searching to gain more magical power than this is the trilogy for you. A must for Dragonlance fans.

5 out of 5 stars You'll love these books........2007-01-29

It doesn't matter what kind of books you like. Youll love the Chronicles and Legends trilogies.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY AMAZING.......2006-11-12

Margret Weis and Tracy Hickam simply wrote the best six books I've ever read. Cronicles and Legends are great for any reader who enjoys a world of adventure. Every theme that you can find in a movie are in these books. Currently deployed, I finished the books in about a week for each one. If you love fantasy novels, this is the way to go!

5 out of 5 stars Twins.......2006-11-10

My son could hardly put this set of books down. He read 5 of the the Dragonlance books in 3 months with is a seriously amazing thing for him!

5 out of 5 stars Dragonlance top 3.......2006-11-05

These books along with The Soulforge are by far the best in the Dragonlance saga. Maybe I am partial to Raistlin but I find that the character is one of the most interesting in all D&D novels and the work that Weiss puts into him really pays off.

worth reading, a great book for kids up to 14 years old. The next 1 is already out and the next one is out 2008 may.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Belongs in Your Library.......2007-03-06

The book: Ulysses Moore: The Lost Map was an excellent read and belongs on your book case. Its educational, exciting, and all about Egypt!
The story takes place in the land of punt: a forgotten Egyptian city lost in time. Ulysses Moore (the man who found this land before the children) is dead now and its up to recover the map of Kilmore Cove. It all starts when the kids walk into the chest and make a mess. Julia, and Rick are twins, and Jason is a young boy with a "devil tongue".

When they walk threw the door they find them selves in a humongous storage room. They hear tapping and all of the sudden the walls start crashing down and the boys are trapped in Punt, with there sister outside of the door! In the book before the children are trying to find a map and discover the secrets left behind by Ulysses. That book continued into this book. Now that the boys are in Punt they meet a young girl named Maruk. She will be there guide threw the Land of Punt. With only Mr. Moore's journal, they will find the map and hopefully return home safely.

I loved this book. If you like adventure, comedy, and even action this book is for you. The best thing about this book is that the author knows how to make the characters sound realistic and alive. Especially in the beginning they give us an "e-mail" from Michael Merryweather explaining that he found the second manuscript to the Ulysses Moore mystery. I find this amusing even though it isn't real, it makes you feel as if your becoming a detective yourself; solving the mystery, and watching as the children make there way through the Land of Punt.

I did not like this book because at the very end they continued to a different book. Honestly I would like to know the end of the story and if the bad guy gets away with it right now! I don't want to go out and buy the book and them read the whole thing just to see what happened!!!

I would recommend this book to anyone who is an aspiring Egyptologist, like me. I also would recommend this book to children over 10, because it has something that you might have to figure out in your head, or really think about it.

3 out of 5 stars Magic Treehouse for 6th Graders.......2007-09-15

I suppose I should have known that the book's target audience was under 12 since the main characters are 11, but I was hoping this book would be one of those that transcends age and manages to entertain parents as well. Unfortunately I was wrong.

Having picked this book up because of the fascinating sketch-like artwork on the inside cover, I found it was originally published in Italian and was translated to English. Because of this I was willing to overlook some of the awkward or bluntly short sentences. I was not, however, able to ignore the cheesiness of the plot, the number of times characters did exactly the right thing at the right time because the "felt" it would somehow turn out, etc. I was also puzzled at how Julia is introduced as only liking credit cards and expensive things but she never really acts that way at all (I think there was one thought that passed through her head).

In the end this is essentially a slightly older version of the Magic Treehouse books, and it entertained me about as much. Fortunately, though, I got it from a library and it only took a couple of hours to read. It isn't a bad book, but I certainly wouldn't encourage my kids to read it.

5 out of 5 stars The best mystery in the world!!!.......2007-05-30

This is a great book about two 11-year old twins that move to a big old house by the seashore. When they first see the house Jason feels a mysterious force coming from inside the house. Julia only wants to be back in the big city of London. They meet a boy named Rick and together they have to solve the mystery of Ulysses Moore and Argo Manor (the house). Jason is a boy who feels magic, Julia is a city girl, and Rick is a mystery solver and a risk taker.
I thought that this book was the best mystery in the world! It did not have that much suspense but it was a book I could not put down. I think you would like this book if you do not like a lot of suspense. If you like fantasy, ghosts, and secret tunnels though walls where puzzles answers decide your life, this is the perfect book for you.

4 out of 5 stars The Mystery Door.......2007-03-02

a)A person that would enjoy this book is a person who loves to explore and loves mystery.
b)I thought that the protagonist was very infantile. Jason acts before he think. He plays around with dangerous things and jumps in an unknown place.
c)I thought that the book was okay. It would been great if the book had more action. If it did, then I would have taken care of it like a new born baby.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun, Mystery, Action Packed Book for Kids.......2007-02-28

Twins Jason and Julia move into the magnificent Argo Manor and befriend Rick, a local. Together, they go on a journey to find more about Ulysses Moore and his ship, which he used in his travels around the world. Trouble lurks behind the magical door, with a sheet thrown over it to hide something. What could that something be?

This is a cute book that kids will love. It is an easy read, and has an excellent plot. Michael Merryweather has a great story.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyed but a little miffed.......2006-07-23

The adventure ends with you wanting to buy the next book. The next book "The Long-lost Map" has a number 2 on the spine, it would of been nice for them to have made it clearer that "The Door Of Time" is number 1 or a Part/Episode 1 of the adventures of the twins and Rick. They do make obscure references to further documents of Ulysses Moore in the email at the start and end. Still good read for the kids, and I love the cover art work and ones found through out the book. But I think a paperback version would be better value for money considering the length of the story and it ending when the story is really getting going. Nevertheless I will be buying the next book "The Long-lost Map" ASAP (and in hardback as they do look great)!!

    Book Description

Jimmy and Janet are twins, but that doesn't mean they are just alike.

When we first meet Jimmy, he wants to dig a real hole. He likes to use a real, grown-up shovel. While he's working, his sister, Janet, pretends to be a bird! She likes to use her imagination. But the twins both like silly jokes, brand- new boots, and talking to Mr. Lemon, the mailman.

As Beverly Cleary writes about Jimmy and Janet's doings, the unique understanding of children that she brings to all of her beloved books is coupled with a keen awareness of duo dynamics that comes from raising twins herself.

Originally published as four separate picture books ( The Real Hole, Two Dog Biscuits, The Growing-Up Feet, and Janet's Thingamajigs), these are stories that a Jimmy would like because they are so true-to-life, and that a Janet would love because they are so believable.

    Book Description

Sequestered in the blackness of the dreaded Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthas, surrounded by nameless creatures of evil, Raistlin Majere weaves a plan to conquer the darkness--to bring it under his control.

Crysania, a beautiful and devoted cleric of Paladine, tries to use her faith to lead Raistlin from the darkness. She is blind to his shadowed designs, and he draws her slowly into his neatly woven trap.

Made aware of Raistlin’s plan, a distraught Caramon travels back in time to the doomed city of Istar in the days before the Cataclysm. There, together with the ever-present kender Tasslehoff, Caramon will make his stand to save Raistlin’s soul.

    Or so he believes.

5 out of 5 stars WOW. Excellent book in a new trilogy.......2007-03-19

I just finished reading Time of the Twins for the first time, and I am honestly impressed by the story. It is very dark, but there is plenty of plot twists, character development and complex situations to satisfy any true fantasy lover. Raistlin is truly an amazing character, he shines in every page. I highly reccommend this book, and I'm looking forward to reading the next!

5 out of 5 stars The exciting start of a new trilogy!.......2006-07-14

Travel back in time to the reign of Kingpriest with Raistlin, Caramon, and Tas (along with the new heroine Crysiana). This story picks up after the ending of the Chronicles Trilogy, with Raistlin the most powerful mage in the land and his brother Caramon a pitiful drunk. Their adventures in Istar are exciting and the characters grow a lot (in the minds of the reader, and as people in the story). While the Chronicles were basically non-stop and somewhat predictable action, the Legends start with a more mature and emotional feel. The reader gets a deeper look into complicated dilemas going on within the characters, and you really don't know who to cheer for. You can't help liking Raistlin a lot, even though you know he is a heartless and basically evil person. While this book is a bit more sophisticated with the character interactions and feelings, there is still plenty of excitment (with Caramon becoming a gladiator and Tas's never-ending forays).

Many people say that they like the Legends trilogy even better than the Chronicles. Its a close call, but I do know that they are excellent fantasy and would be enjoyed by anyone.

    3 out of 5 stars Worth a Read.......2006-02-13

After having finished the Dragonlance Chronicles, I was eager to find out what happened to Raistlin after he took what I had assumed to be Fistandantilus's place as Master of the Tower. In Time of the Twins, I was not disappointed. The authors gave brief updates on what was happening in the lives of the companions after the war, and started up another tale involving the twins.

Tas was a welcome presence in this book, as he always is. However, I was looking for something new in the main character introduced in this series, Crysanthia, Revered Daughter of Paladine. The authors did an excellent job with each of the companions in the Dragonlance Chronicles. Readers could identify with and feel close to each of the characters. With Crysanthia, I get the feeling that she was just thrown in there to create something new and to add a bit of romance to the book. Whenever I'm reading something from her point of view, I feel so...detached. I feel like I'm looking down on her and watching her go through the actions, rather than walking right along beside her, going through the actions with her.

This book is more thought-provoking than the action-packed Dragonlance Chronicles. One moment, you're wondering if Cyrsanthia's love can "save" Raistlin. The next, you're thinking that what would "saving" Raistlin be? After all, he'd never be content to just...settle down. As long as he's alive, he'll constantly lust for power. And so while on one side, you want Raistlin to accomplish his task, on the other you wonder if his death will be the only thing to bring "peace" to Krynn. And then there's the whole good/evil balance thing...

I think that to enjoy this book to its fullest, it's an absolute MUST to read the Dragonlance Chronicles. While that made this book more enjoyable for me, unfortunately I consider this to be one of the book's failings, because it is a completely new series and should be easily followed by anyone deciding to pick it up. On Caramon's and Tas's part, there is continued character development that makes their characters more complex and interesting to read. However, Crysanthia is very predictable (you can probably guess from the prologue what will happen with her) and so I hardly consider any change on her part "character development." As for Raistlin, I hope things start going wrong for him soon, because it gets a little boring reading about his (nearly) ultimate power again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book, annoying character.......2006-01-25

I've read the Chronicles, the New Adventures, and the Second Generation when I started on the Legends series. This is a very good book, but I cannot stand Crysania. Too bad she's pretty much the second main character. Raistlin is awesome though, and continues his quest to gain even more power. Overall, I love it, but I just hate Crysania. The ever-lovable Tas, however, balances her out a bit.

5 out of 5 stars The start of a great series.......2006-01-06

I think this book is great! I was hooked by the spell of this book and it's words. Marvelously written probably because of Raistlin, the greatest mage of Krynn in his time. Raistlin is my favorite character of the whole series since he is full of mystery and power. The mage is an ambitious, strongwilled, and intellegent perfectionist who loves getting his way. He and his twin are as different as the sun and the moon which is so interesting. I think I like Raistlin because he is like me in many ways and that I can relate to him in many things. I also like the way Margaret Weis spun romance into the book that is intrancing in my point of view. I love the cover of the book and I think that it fits extremely well with the books. I hope the next book will be just as good as the first!

    Book Description

In first grade, twins Alexis and Adam wrote down what they wanted to be when they grew up and put it in their teacher’s time capsule. Now entering their senior year in high school, they are surprised to find out what they wrote: Alexis wanted to “help people” and Adam wanted to be a fireman. But that was before Adam got sick and their family fell apart. Adam’s leukemia is now in remission but, sadly, so is the twins’ family. Their mother and father are always working—not only don’t they have time for Alexis and Adam, they don’t have time for each other. Alexis can’t even convince them to take a weekend off for one last family vacation to Disney World.

No one is prepared when Adam gets sick again, but this time Alexis is not alone. Adam’s illness reunites the family. And Alexis discovers that the time capsule predictions weren’t so far off the mark.

I usually don't read this kind of a story line, but when I was at the book fair I was drawn to this book. When I started to read this book I counldn't put it down. At one point a was reading through tears. Both Alex and Alexis insipered me to never let down hope even though it might seem like there is no way you can get out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Read this very good, very sad book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-07

Time Capsule is about twins, Adam and Alexis, who are in their senior year of high school and get invited to a reunion were they went to kindergarten when they were little. When Adam was in kidagarten he wrote that he wanted to be a fireman and Alexis wanted to help people, they put these in A time capsule, which they opened at the reunion. Their family is falling apart because of Adam's leukemia, and never really see each other. It's even worse when Adam gets sick the second time! Read this book to find out what happend to Adam and how it affected his family and friends.

This is the best book I have ever read, even though it is very emotional and made me and my other friends that read it cry. It has a very good plot and it is very heartwarming. I would recommened this book to everyone.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Story.......2006-06-09

Time Capsule follows the Senior year of a set of twins, Alexis and Adam. Their lives are going as smoothly as possible, even though their mother is never home and Alexis suspects her father of having an affair, until Adam collapses from the leukemia that had plagued him in the past.

This was an interesting book, though not quite a "wow"er. I can't say the sad part was effective enough for me, since I didn't shed a tear (which is unusual for me). However, still a great book and I reccommend it.
