Book Description

The Dragon Slayers' Academy is back-and it's bigger and better than ever! The books have new covers and are now 112 pages long. Expanded from the old 96-page format, they now feature a fun Dragon Slayers' Academy Yearbook at the end of each story, with funny profiles of the faculty, the staff, and, especially, the students of D.S.A. All the things kids want to know about their favorite characters are revealed: their silly nicknames, inner secrets, wildest dreams, and lofty plans for the future!

Is a wizard's spell for courage enough to save Wiglaf when the "Mother of all Dragons" (or at least of 3,684 of them) comes looking for the lad who slayed son number 92?

Illustrated by Bill Basso.

More jokes about eels for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, more clumsy spells of wizards, more greed from the Headmaster, and a smelly female dragon that is awfully mad at Wiglaf for killing her son. Probably a bit too predictably for nine to twelve year olds, this dragon's weakness is a bath. Basically a saturday morning cartoon episode set to prose, this might be good for reluctant readers just getting started on chapter books or six to nine year olds who devour up anything medieval, but the 9 to 12 tag is pushing it a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Rollicking fun twist after book 1.......2001-10-30

My son and I discovered this whole series of books when he was a first grader...perfect for him to read as a second grader now. In the spirit of Harry Potter and the Hobbit but not so complex that kid's lose the story line. Full of jokes and adventure, I cannot recommend these any more strongly for the 7 to 10 age group (depending on reading ability). We've had two impressive endorsements:

When we first began reading about Wiglaf, it was on a plane to Colorado. As I read to my son, I realized that other children were tuning in to the story. Several parents asked for the book titles and the author when we landed.

Also, late last year I read books 1-3 for a first grade class and have since read to the second grade. The library has been unable to keep two full sets in stock and the teachers have purchased their own sets. It has taken reading by storm as boys and girls strive to finish the series.

Oh yeah, and adults will get a private chuckle out of the humor and wordplay from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars TOTALLY EXCELLENT.......2000-07-21

This book was great! I got it for my 9 year old son, because it was recommended by Amazon as similar to Harry Potter. It has many similarities, including humor, peril and awful relatives. The main difference is the length of the books. At under 100 pages, my son finds this book much less intimidating. I definately recommend this book for anyone who enjoys wordplay, adventure, and likes seeing the little guy win every once in a while.

The Strongbow Saga, Book Two: Dragons from the Sea
by Judson Roberts
Historical Fiction *****
This story is about a young man named Halfdan. He has a large past that is very painful for him. When he just turned 15, He and his half brother set off to show him his new inheritance, his own little bit of land. But only at the first night of being there, Toke, his half brother turns up wanting revenge for inheriting nothing. Toke is a berserk (someone who is crazy about killing) very mean and evil. Late at night he attacked the land and killed the innocent people of it while promising their safe exit, he wanted no one to tell of his treachery. Halfdan managed to get away with the sacrifice of his brother while making a path to let him escape. They needed someone to escape, so he could avenge them all. Now he is looking for a ship to serve in a port called Hedeby. He finds a Jarl who he impresses with his bow skills. The Jarl normally doesn't just anyone join his crew of vikings but he believes that the norns (the gods that weave everybody's life line)have sent the boy as a sign to him. Halfdan joins the crew that soon after leaves to the call of the king of the Danes. The king declares that they shall all go to war against the Franks, who had done the same thing to them many centuries ago. So with little experience at all Halfdan ventures to war.
This book sort of relates to this book that I read called Hatchet. It was a story about a boy who was 13 and he got lost in the wilderness with only his hatchet, and his will to live. It is actually a very powerful story because this boy is just doing well when all the sudden, something terrible happens to him and his new way of life, he had to start all over, just like Halfdan. So i guess they are sort of similar.
The author is a very talented writer for all I'm concerned. He really knows how to describe something without boring me to sleep. I loved his first strongbow saga book as well. He really brings the words alive and paint pictures in my mind. He is also very good at leaving you hanging at the end of the first and second of these books. Almost everyday for about a month I would ask my mom if this book had arrived in the mail. So about two days ago it actually did come, I've been reading 24/7 since then. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!! ******************************** !!!!!!KOOB SITH EVOL

4 out of 5 stars Well written.......2007-08-28

This book was well written and had an exceptional storyline. The problems: the book was 300 pages and the margins were so small that only 5 words could fit on a line.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-08-20

The year is 845 A.D. and fifteen-year-old Halfdan Hroriksson vows to find and kill the man who murdered his brother, Harald. He travels to the fortress, Hedeby, where he hopes to join the crew of a Viking longship and go i-viking.

The fierce, epic STRONGBOW SAGA continues with this exciting sequel (The Strongbow Saga, Book One: Viking Warrior (The Strongbow Saga)), following the adventures of a young man learning the ways of the Viking warriors.

Halfdan is ready for action, armed with an amazing longbow that he made himself, and an axe that he took from a man that he killed. Halfdan's skill as an archer gains him acceptance into the crew of the Viking ship, The Gull, as it embarks on a quest to conquer the Franks. The large armada of Viking ships sail to make war on the Franks, the followers of the white Christ, and their sworn enemies. The electrifying battles and dialogue that fits the era feel realistic -- it's a can't-put-down chronicle with fast action and a multi-level plot.

Judson Roberts' extensive research is evident in this thrilling Viking yarn with compelling characters. Halfdan's honor and loyalty make him likable and sympathetic even when his violence is intense, frightening, and explicit, as it sometimes is in the fierce battles depicted in this provocative story.

The back of the book has a complete list of the characters, along with the part they play in the story, and a glossary of Viking terms, which I found very helpful. I greatly enjoyed this novel and I'm looking forward to the next volume in this electrifying saga. I'm definitely hooked on this series, and impatient for more.

I read the first book to the Strongbow Saga, Viking Warrior and it is definetly one of my favorite books I've read in quite a while. "Dragons from the Sea" is not as good as the previous book but it is a great read and anybody that loves the history on vikings, action, and other things packed in between will adore this novel and will want to complete the entire series!

Halfdan hasn't caried much with him. One thing he is carying right now is a promise that must be fulfilled. He is after the man that killed his brother and his people. The mans name is Toke. He's an evil murderor, striving to take over all he can. Halfdan's path leads him to be in a ship's crew on the GULL. His wonderful skills as an archer lead him on a ship that only has warriors that are specially picked and assigned. As Halfdan goes on his adventure many things happen and they all lead...to the next book. It's a cliffhanger folks!

Please try out this book and hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I have!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Science Fiction in a world of Fantasy.......2007-07-05

This is a great book, this trilogy was good in general. Three brothers find themselves on a unexplored planet and bond with the beings of the planet and the planet itself. Finding their long lost sister and trying to get along with her on the opposite side of the law, with an enemy that doesn't want to die and can take over anyone's body, making good with the space police stranded on the planet, and helping the dragons deal with their cousins. But theres also the middle brother's son, trying to find his father, the sister trying to find her place, and the natives understanding their new "Gods".
Best way to describe this series is to take a Space Ship and its crews with their technology, and throw them onto a planet with Magic. Then see how the interact.

4 out of 5 stars good, but not perfect.......2007-01-03

the book is a good fit for the series, but in the final pages, it felt rushed, and didn't really give a sense of closure for some of the major characters.

5 out of 5 stars exciting and action packed Stargod tale.......2005-11-02

The three O'Hara brothers (Kim, Konner, and Loki) are wanted criminals by the Galactic Terran Empire and the Terran Imperial Military Police (IMP's) were chasing their ship when it went through an unknown jump-point and landed on a world where magic works and dragons exist. The brothers became known as the Stargods to the primitive humans because of their ability to cure a bioengineered plague. Kim and Konner married local women but their way of life is endangered when a group of IMPs land.

The O'Hare siblings disable their enemy's ship, forcing them to work with the natives if they want to survive. Their sister Kat, who wants to bring her brothers to justice for abandoning her twenty years ago, gets used to this strange world and when her protégées are in trouble, she saves them and destroys her own career with the IMP. Konner is determined to get off planet and find his son Martin who is with his mother, an amoral criminal. He doesn't realize Martin has escaped her control and is coming to him until they have to fight Hanassa, the dragon who has taken over the human body and mind of the leader of the IMPs; a being who hates dragons and humans so much that he plans to destroy the planet. Martin and the O'Hare siblings, including Kat, fight to stop him.

The third book in the Stargod series is just as exciting and action packed as the other two books in the series. The focus of this novel is on Kat who goes from hating her family to understanding how she got separated from them two decades ago. The planet she first thought strange now hold a place in her heart and if she has any say in the matter, she will one day retire there. The brothers feel like they have a new home on the planet and plan to keep "civilization" away. Irene Radford shows readers once again why her books are so popular.

5 out of 5 stars Alys & Selendrile.......2007-08-22

I first read this book when I was 12. Years later, the characters and plot are still very alive in my mind. This is something to mention, due to my attention span (not really what you'd associate with a temperament of endurance).

I like books that are fast-paced, and that do not bog the reader down with too many unnecessary details. The way the romance played out in this book was done with much skill and taste. The author engages readers of all ages, which is both admirable and inspiring.

I found myself going back to Dragon's Bait, and many other books by Vivian Vande Velde, throughout my teenage years. That hasn't really changed now that I'm older. Her books lack yawn-worthy pretentious prose which I find all too abundant in many other books for Young Adults, which is of course just in my opinion, but also why I give this delightful book five stars.

5 out of 5 stars A lifelong favourite........2001-05-14

I got this book at the age of 13 when it was first released. Since then, I have found a second copy at a used book store and have kept both copies in my home ever since. These days, I read them aloud to my children.

While I was one of the many kids who loved the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books as a child, this book was the rare title that followed the same formula and bettered it so much that it alone was enough to make you want to toss all the others into the garbage. Sadly, it was the only one of the "Endless Quest" books that was this good, but the one good one was a powerhouse.

As the young wizard apprentice Jaimie, you and your two best friends, a talking fox and a talking owl (simply named Fox and Owl) have come with wizard Pentegarn to settle a problem with the three wizards currently ruling in the now-tattered rainbow castle. But you have been tricked, so while Pentergarn fights for his life you, Fox and Owl have been sent to another area entirely. It's up to you to get back to Pentegarn and help him.

Rose Estes is a natural for this sort of storytelling. She has a strong, mature style in her manner and handles the layout of the entire book with lots of intelligent planning, yet keeps the slightest suggestion of a child's fairy tale present just enough to keep it lighthearted (she eases the dark mystery of the cloud castle's tempting table by presenting its food and drink as "cookies, cakes, ice cream and candy", for example). And there are some genuinely humorous moments both clever and refreshingly original for this sort of book, such as the antics of Fox and Owl in the enchanted library. And Harry Quinn's illustrations are among the best I've seen in fantasy literature.

If you stumble across this one, trust me--you will adore it and will read it again and again as much as any of the fairy tales you loved as a child.

4 out of 5 stars Good for young readers.......1999-10-10

Like the other endless quests books, it is up to you to decide the hero's fate and the plot. It was my favorite endless quest book as a child, mostly because I love dragons. It's fun to read and different from the other books in Sci-fic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Beginner Adventures you can get!.......2003-02-06

Getting a D&D game going is never easy, and if you are like me and have limited time and use published adventures in you game, then this is a great buy. If you are not familiar with the KoK Campaign World, have no fear, with slight modifications a DM could fit this adventure into any campaign. What I think sets this adventure apart though, is the main plot. It's not a journey to the center of the dungeon and kill the boss monster. There is a more involved story then that, with elements of mystery, strong chances for role playing, and adventuring in town, wilderness and dungeon settings.

Plus the DM has a lot of props. There are player handouts and pictures to show the players. As well for each NPC there is a small picture for the DM to see so you get an idea of what they look like, this enables the DM to be descriptive.

Another great thing about this adventure is it's a great launch point for any campaign. And if the players play their cards right, in the end they will have a nice village to use as their base of operations and some substantial ties with nobility.

I say buy it and enjoy.

          Book Description

          SECRET WEAPON

Ten years ago, a terrible virus swept the globe. It turned its victims into bloodthirsty monsters called Dracules, and the only cure is death. Now, with humankind on the brink of extinction, only the elite warriors of the Vius Squad stand between chaos and civilization. New recruit Leila Mikami is one of the squad’s most promising young warriors, but she has another agenda: Her parents were killed by a Dracule, and she’s determined to take revenge. To do this, she has to find the Dragon Eye–a magic weapon that will make her the most powerful warrior in the world.
