Book Description
For kindergartners and first graders who need extra work on their early literacy skills, this proven plan for teaching phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence is a teacher's best friend. Expert researchers created this developmentally sequenced, 11-week program in order to give students repeated opportunities to practice and enhance their beginning reading and spelling abilities. Each of the 44, 15 to 20 minute lessons features a "say-it-and-move-it" activity, a letter name and sound instruction exercise, and phonological awareness practice.
Perfect for small groups or individual instruction, this program is easy for teachers to use and understand because detailed scripted instructions and reproducible materials - such as picture cards, letter cards, and games - are provided. And teachers have the flexibility to shorten or extend the amount of time it takes for a student to complete the program. With this all-in-one resource, educators will have everything they need to get their students off to a great start in reading.

The book cam quickly in the mail and was exactly as described. Thank you!
Great organized program.......2007-05-19
I am impressed by the organization of this phonological awareness program. I have just started using it with Kindergarten children who need more help developing PA. They love the game-like, quick exercises and are learning the difference between a sound and a letter name. I use a dolphin puppet for Fix-it which the children look forward to seeing every time we meet.
Crack the Code.......2006-03-12

Road to the Code.......2006-03-01
I think this is a great program for teaching phonemic awareness. It has almost everything that you need. I would recommend it to anyone working with young children or those with special needs that are struggling with reading readiness.
outstanding.......2006-02-28
Rode to the Code gave me a great program on how to help my struggling students with phonemic awareness. Over time, these students began to understand the big picture of what reading is all about. We are matching letters and sounds and recognizing rhyming words and rhyming word parts. Thank you Rode to the Code!

Another Excellent Story!.......2005-09-03
This isn't a big book - only 206 pages in the hardcover edition - but that doesn't matter at all. This is one of those stories that just grabs you from the start and sucks you right into the mythological world that Charles de Lint creates so well. It's not an action-packed book, nothing like that. Instead it follows the interactions of about seven individuals over the course of a few days. He makes the interactions between the "real" people and the people of myth totally believable. I never find myself saying, "Oh, how can that be?". Nope, I just go along happily for the ride.
After reading this book, I want to go and actually see the deserts of the Southwest. I want to learn more about the mythology of the region. That is one of the secrets to de Lint's writing, I think - it's very easy to visualize the settings, to become intrigued by the mysteries surrounding the characters. To want more.
I enjoyed the nod he gave to Terri Windling, and I would second the recommendation another reviewer gave about Windling's "The Wood Wife" - it's another excellent book. For those of you who may have read de Lint's "Forests of the Heart", there's a brief appearance of Bettina and one of her uncles in this book, which was a pleasant surprise.
Read this book.
A Delint Book? Why look any further?.......2005-03-14
Almost every De Lint book I have read has sucked me in instantly. All of his books are great but the Newford Series are my absolute favs. I would sugest starting with one of them, then getting into his other books. His horor novels are just that, the mental aspect will have you lieing awake at night.
I would sugest reading Forests of the Heart first before this novel, but you do not have to. All delint books stand on their own.
Medicine Road is good medicine.......2005-01-01
Medicine Road is what I've come to expect from De Lint. Wonder-full! Bess and Laurel Dillard are back. We first met them in Seven Wild Sisters. This time they are in Arizona giving concerts at local establishments. They fall or leap into a magical adventure depending on which sister's version you happen to be reading. Each sister has her own way of relating to magic and the everyday world and it colors their respective response to it. Each sister grows and changes in the "same but different" way of twins. This duality is paralleled by the characters Alice and Jim, formerly jack rabbit and coyote. They grow and change as they interact with the twins and play out their own stories. De Lint's story is reminiscent of Terri Windling's The Wood Wife, which you should check out as well. But De Lint's magic is all his own. Read this and all of his other work. You won't be disappointed.
Arizona adventure.......2004-12-24
I really enjoy a de Lint book. Nothing appears out of the ordinary, until you turn a corner or take one more step. Suddenly you're in a magical, more alive world. Ours, yet more so.
Medicine Road concerns Bess and Laurel, twin sisters traveling to Arizona for a series of concert appearances. Upon arrival in Tucson, they meet several people, threatening or otherwise. As in any de Lint book, no one is who they appear to be. His characters always reveal hidden potential. Character and reader both discover this potential as the story develops.
Their are six main actors, each of whom is at times the focus
of the action. Of these, the sisters' focal pieces are done first- person. A nice separation that draws the reader into their
viewpoint and how it affects the others around them.
The Charles Vess illustrations are light yet mysterious. I especially like the one inside the front cover. Charles de Lint is a modern-day storyteller with an old message: we are each more than we realize.
"We figure, if folks like our music, we've probably got something in common with them, and when you're far from home, this is pretty much the best way for us to meet like-minded folks."

Book Description
In August 1864, Cheyenne and Sioux warriors launched a series of raids on the "road ranches" along the California-Oregon Trail, in Nebraska Territory, killing, wounding, or capturing dozens of white settlers. Massacre along the Medicine Road details that violent summer, as seen through the eyes of the people who were the targets of the attacks. Ronald Becher spent more than seven years sifting through thousands of pages of documents, diaries and newspaper accounts from the period, to produce a fascinating and detailed snapshot of the people, events and their aftermath.

More information than I expected. WAAAAAY more........2007-09-12
For some reason, the impression this book description gives is that it only covers the Indian raids on the road ranches along the Little Blue River in August 1864. It certainly does that in exhaustive detail. But it covers SO much more. It basically covers ALL the Indian raid activity in Nebraska in the 1860-67 time frame including all along the Platte Valley as far as Julesburg. Biographies of all the major players are here too, no easy task considering most were simple pioneers that left a tough trail to follow.
The comprehensivness of this tome is incredible. The book is richly sourced and the footnotes highly informative. Maps are excellent, although throwing in one additional map showing all the rivers of Nebraska would have been nice.
This is a book so packed full of information that it needs to be read twice, because there's too much to digest the first time around.
Mr. Becher, my sincere congratulations. You've done a marvelous job. This was obviously a labor of love. Hard to believe this is your first book.
No history buff's bookshelf should be without this book........1999-05-29
I have been a "student" of the Indian raids along the Little Blue in Nebraska in 1864 and have written and lectured on the subject for the past 9 years. Even my own publication falls way short of this new book. The history of the raids has needed someone to present it using no frills, no embellishments - just hard, cold facts supported by good documentation. The author has done just that and with the flair of a storyteller, the fascinating account of the events leading to and after the conflict is flawlessly unveiled in the book. The real heart of this book though is in Part II, presented in a nearly blow by blow "you are there" view of each of the attacks on stage stations and road ranches by Cheyenne and Sioux warriors. No other accounts have told this story with the thorough and painstaking examination given it by the writer. Drawing upon a vast body of military records, manuscripts, government publications, newspapers, periodicals, books, and other documentation, he has sifted meticulously through half-truths, outright untruths, shaded truths, and filled in with factual material where none was available or had been omitted in previous accounts. The remarkable research has resulted in a work that sheds a new and delightfully comprehensive light upon this period of American history.
For those who know (or wish to learn about) the whys and wherefores of the white-Indian relations from the time of the colonists and through the final conflict at Wounded Knee in 1890, it is put into perspective with this work. The book is divided into four parts, followed with an epilogue and appendices. Part I gives an overview of the development of white-Indian relations and interactions, presided over by government intervention from the 1600s up to the 1860s and the eve of the raid or massacre along the Little Blue. Unfolded in Part II is an amazingly accurate and detailed description of each day of the raid and immediate aftermath taking place from August 7th through August 19th. Beginning on the 7th, Cheyenne and Sioux warriors attacked numerous road ranches along the Little Blue and vast amounts of property and goods were destroyed. Commerce and travel along the route west from Missouri and Kansas through Nebraska and Colorado came to a halt. Hundreds of people were affected, many lost their lives, several women and children were captured and held hostage - some for as long at nine months.
Part III describes the panic and some levelheaded preparation and fortification of their homes by people living in the outlying areas of the actual raids. Accounting of press coverage given to the events, military campaigns to seek out and punish the Indians is given by the author before chapters on the captives and their unplanned for journey against their will.
For those interested in the ordeal and aftermath of the captivity of those mentioned, the book is a goldmine of information. Of the known captives (Lucinda, Isabelle and Willie Eubank, Ambrose Asher, Laura Roper, Nancy Morton, Daniel Marble) all survived and were released to military authorities. All returned home to relatives except Daniel Marble and Isabelle Eubank, who lived for only a short time after reaching Denver where they were brought by Major Edward W. Wynkoop, the commander at Fort Lyon in Colorado Territory. Nancy Morton was held 6 months and finally reached Fort Laramie in Wyoming, as did Lucinda and Willie Eubank who were brought there by their captors in May of 1865. For those interested in the history of the Sand Creek Massacre and Black Kettle's role in the events of 1864, it may be a surprise to learn that he was one of those greatly responsible for negotiating the release of the captives to Major Wynkoop near Hackberry Creek in western Kansas in September of 1864. Colonel Chivington and the First Colorado Volunteers ultimately attacked him and his fellow tribesmen in late November 1864.
Part IV of the book describes the aftereffects of the raids with concluding stories about many of the individuals who had lived in the valley of the Little Blue as well as others who impacted the story. Summation is given the Lemmon, Roper, Martin, Eubank, Morton, Emery, Mudge, Comstock, Baker, Artist, Gilbert, Hunt, Palmer, Bainter, Uhlig, Metcalf, Morrow, McDonald, Gilman and Marble families. What became of those military and governmental officials like Colonel Summers, Generals Samuel Curtis and Robert Mitchell, John Evans, and John Milton Chivington is discussed. A concluding chapter describes one former captive's return to the site of her capture that had occurred 64 years before.
Appendix A lists the known casualties of the raid, including those killed, mortally wounded, wounded and captured. This list is incredibly valuable for those trying to make sense of all the names and dates. Appendix B is a list of the military troop dispositions of company units and commanding officers. The photographs and illustrations are fine and their clarity is very good. Although a few typos crop up here and there in the text and one map on page 174 erroneously lists Nuckotte County instead of Nuckolls County, there is nothing about the book that needs much improvement. I loved the book and learned a lot from it that even I, after nearly 10 years of studying this topic, did not know.
No bookshelf of individuals interested in American west history should be without this awesome piece of research and easy to read style of writing. I highly recommend the book and give it my highest endorsement.
Book Description
With prediabetes at epidemic levels, millions of people are being told by their doctor to take personal action now, before it's too late. Prediabetes Wake-Up Call provides the newly diagnosed patient with detailed information about the threat of type 2 diabetes while explaining the lifestyle changes that will lower the risk of prediabetes developing into diabetes.
Prediabetes Wake-Up Call describes the facts about diabetes and includes assessment checklists and charts to help readers identify areas of relative risk. Then the author details specific strategies to address each risk factor, including weight management, exercise, and food choices, plus less-obvious strategies such as formulating new attitudes towards healthy living. Written for a lay reader, Prediabetes Wake-Up Call offers guidance, sets goals, and provides the reassurance necessary for readers to start getting healthier today.

Informative but limited in its reach........2007-03-23
This book does have some good information, but in my opinion, it's only suitable for someone who knows absolutely nothing about diabetes or health in general, and who doesn't consider himself a "reader." The tone is a bit patronizing, as if the reader is in grade school, and the cars & travel analogy is distracting & overdone.
A must.......2006-09-24
What's the difference between 'prediabetes' and all-out diabetes? Can a diagnosis of 'prediabetes' be reversed? These and other questions are answered in a survey which includes an overview of diabetes risks and health factors but provides a welcome focus on the state of health which leads into diabetes. Chapters explain blood sugars, risk factors, and provide a plan to avoid developing diabetes. This should be a 'must' for any overweight person, or those with a family predisposition to diabetes.

too much information........2007-02-25
Pharmacology is tested more often on step 1 than immunology, however, the same book "road map pharmacology" actually has less pages than this book. This book definitely has too much information. Maybe it is good for the actual class, it is certainly not a good book for step 1 review.
I was going to rate it a 3. "apoptosis" rated it a 5, therefore, I had to rate this book a 2. I also have read the high yield immunology. At least that book is managable, you will go crazy if you want to study this book. It has listed some diseases which are not even mentioned on the brs pathology book, for example, do you know about the Job's symdrome or "systemic inflammatory response syndrome," selective IGG2 deficiency, selective IGA deficiency, etc. It has way too much detailed information. I bet, not even the author himself can remember everything he wrote in that book.
Quick, organized - high yield.......2006-11-16
Perfect for the KUMC Immunology course, a must have for any medical student
"Too much" is better than "not enough"!.......2006-10-03
I guess I have to write a new review on this book, as my answer to Preppy Jock.
First of all, I'd say, that too much info is always better than not enough, especially, if someone has managed to put all this info in a concise and readable way.
Comparing different books from the same series only by their page numbers isn't the very helpful method to judge about their quality - these books may be at the different level of reviewing - what is "Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology" or "Katzung and Trevor's Review of Pharmacology" (NOT "USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology"!) for pharmacology, the same is "USMLE Road Map: Immunology" for immunology - read my amazon review about "USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology", 2nd ed. and you'll understand what do I mean.
224 pages long review of immunology couldn't "make you crazy, because it's too detailed" - your only complaint is that you can find all the aspects of immunology in this tiny book, but this just means that the author has done an excellent job - you'll be able to answer every question about immunology on your step 1 exam, even the most difficult one!
Also, who said that "BRS Pathology" is the standard for the USMLE step 1 and only those diseases, which are mentioned in that book will be tested on the actual exam?
You may feel more comfortable reading "High-Yield Immunology" - that book is oversimplified and so, you'll be reading mostly the stuff you already know - you wouldn't need much effort, but I guess, this wouldn't make your performance on the USMLE step 1 better.

We have been through quite a journey so far with our newly adopted girls, 7,8. Many resources are ineffective that the special needs program gives you when you start. This book helps you understand and work through the special issues of neglected and abused children. I wish we had this book before we evedr adopted.

Customer Reviews:
Not Impressed.......2007-01-10
I was very excited when I first found this product because I thought it would really help me with my nursing concept maps but in the end I was very disappointed. The software is very user friendly when it comes to collecting the data, but the actual concept map was a nightmare. Customizing it was a joke. As a student we're required to enter scientific rationale for each intervention which is a lot of typing. This software does not let you resize your text boxes in no way. Therefore, all of my text would end up off the page. It was a mess. I ended up having to take a screenshot, pasting the picture in paint program and then cutting and pasting the text I needed to move. I then pasted that in word and printed my concept map. I've used other Mosby products and know that they could have done better. I think they were just making this product to be able to say that they had it and to make a little money. Don't waste your money.
It was ok.......2006-11-10
I purchased this to help with a class project. However I found that it did not meet my class specification, because they can vary by each instructors likes, more than care plans. So it did not help me at all. Also I found that my school text book had the exact program available for free on the internet with the web based study guide. so for me it was a redundant product. So to summerize, it was exactly what they claim, it works well, just not what I had hoped for. I have the care plan constructor from the same publisher and it was the best resorce I ever purchased for my nursing education.
Great Concept Map Builder.......2006-10-03
I feel this program is great for nursing students (myself being one). It quikly builds concept maps and lets you know what information to gather while doing an assesment. Your teacher will be impressed by the professional look. The other reveiw states that it is very difficult to learn how to use this program, however, it took me just a few minutes to be up and running, it's SIMPLE! Anyway I highly recommend it.
Save your money and do it yourself........2005-12-07
Although the thought that went into creating this item was useful, the item itself is not. The headings for content areas are there, but the learning curve is steep- it was for me, and for my nursing students. There is not adequate space to allow for text entry, and it basically makes your paper pretty by adding colors.
It took my students longer to figure out how to use the program than it did for them to create their own concept maps using a standard word processing program.
