According to authors Connie Zweig and Steve Wolf, each of us has shadows that hold forbidden feelings such as shame, jealousy, greed, lust, and rage. Left to their own devices these shadows will become destructive saboteurs--causing us to betray our loved ones as well as ourselves. It is not within our power to choose whether or not to have these shadows; however, Zweig and Wolf believe that it is within our power to take responsibility for our shadows and put them to productive use. Chapter by chapter Zweig and Wolf reveal the shadow side of love, parenthood, siblings, friendships, midlife, and work. Rather than deny or destroy these shadows, the authors show readers how to confront and "romance" them in order to access the energy, vitality, and creativity that usually lie dormant within our dark sides.
Book Description
Beneath the social mask we wear every day, we have a hidden shadow side: an impulsive, wounded, sad, or isolated part that we generally try to ignore, but which can erupt in hurtful ways. As therapists Connie Zweig and Steve Wolf show in this landmark book, the shadow can actually be a source of emotional richness and vitality, and acknowledging it can be a pathway to healing and an authentic life. "Romancing the shadow"--meeting your dark side, beginning to understand its unconscious messages, and learning to use its powerful energies in productive ways--is the challenging and exciting soul work that Zweig and Wolf offer in this practical, rewarding guide.
Drawing on the timeless teachings of Carl Jung and compelling stories from their clinical practices, Zweig and Wolf reveal how the shadow guides your choices in love, sex, marriage, friendship, work, and family life. With their innovative method, you can uncover the unique patterns and purpose of your shadow and learn to defuse negative emotions; reclaim forbidden or lost feelings; achieve greater self-acceptance; heal betrayal; reimagine and re-create relationships; cultivate compassion for others; renew creative expressions; and find purpose in your suffering.
The shadow knows why good people sometimes do bad things. Romancing the shadow and learning to read the messages it encodes in daily life can deepen your consciousness, imagination, and soul.

Romancing the Shadow.......2005-09-30
It is a wonderful book. It has helped me when many things. Thank you so much.
Interesting topic, ineffective writing.......2003-04-27
Having just started to read about Jungian psychology, and taken an interest in the concept of the shadow, I approached this book in anticipation after reading Robert A Johnson's 'Owning your shadow'.While Johnson's book was concise and to the point, and very enjoyable to read, this book has been a boring read after the first couple of chapters. The ideas presented are sometimes repetitive and at other times just do not gel. You feel that you've read a profusion of sentences with a sprinkling of punctuations in between but with very little new information or insight as you go from page to page. I don't think I've learnt much, in theory or in practice. Will go to Debbie Ford's "The Dark side of the Light Chasers" now and hopefully find a more satisfying read.
Not usually into psychology/self-help.......2002-06-21
I went through a phase of that when I was teen and never really recovered, but this book is different. I don't know if the term depth psychology applies, but it certainly brings the concept to mind. The author works in Jungian concepts of archetype and shadow and seems to assume familiarity with them. Like many books it has a number of examples, but I found them more detailed and better related to one another. By reading this book one spends some time with the concept that a relationship, with oneself, or a significant other, is continuously evolving and never fixed, but that it can be stable. Zweig gives us the idea of a the third person in a relationship who can be a threatening other or the unity created by the couple, but usually both. This combines with the artistic, rather than scientific, analysis of the Shadow, to create a useful tool which encourages the reader to pinpoint what it is they really want from a relationship, as opposed to what they think they want. It's very easy to be confused on that subject, especially in our society where there's no such thing as an emotional education. You have to do your own work though.
Useful for midlife reflection.......2000-06-09
Imagine yourself at a crowded conference table in a dark room. There are many present, but no role call. Each person is known only when he or she speaks, but you cannot speak. In fact, you sometimes cannot even hear. On the rare occassion that a light briefly shines, your eyes are usually closed. Every decision, reaction, thought and feeling in your life is determined by the voices at this conference. Usually the loudest and shrillest voice dominates. To the authors, this is a picture of your inner life.
The authors attempt to enlighten the reader so that he begins to bring the shadow people into the light. In essence the book is a call for conscious, intentional life. Instead of a mute observer and victim, the authors hope to strengthen the innermost Self so that the voices can be heard, not denied; heeded without dominating.
Like much written from a Jungian perspective, I found this book both frustrating and helpful. References to Greek myths multiply at an alarming rate, but I found that prior knowledge of the pregnant meaning of each myth name was not essential to benefit from this book.
The authors explore family of origin shadows, relationship shadows, shadows in the workplace and the midlife experience of shadow. Four primary defenses against self-awareness of the shadow occur as running themes: money, power, sex and addiction.
It is interesting that there is little or no reference to mortality, aging and legacy shadow issues. Perhaps the ages of the authors (at most 51 years?) has resulted in a less comprehensive view of shadow work. If so, I hope they will update this work in 20 years.
I recommend this work to others, like myself, who are consciously working through midlife questions. This book may open new vistas for these seekers. For those looking for a "how to" prspective, this book will be a disappointment, only nine pages provide practical advice.
A Waist of time!.......2000-01-30
I totally agree with the reviewer Timothy F. Mulligan who said that this book is disappointing.. When I read the title of the book, then the first few pages I was so excited.. I thought this is exactly what I was looking for..
Even while I was reading, I kept saying: "Ok I didn't understand my shadow yet but I'm sure I will do if I'll just be patient enough and read till the end (because it was also starting to get boring" But I was disappointed cause here! I finished the book and it really didn't help! It didn't help me read or see my shadow, talk about romancing it! Later on I read some other books that weren't really talking about this; neither were talking psychology, but helped more in understanding it..
Maybe I didn't read it slow enough! I will try reading again!

Book Description
"Gemmell . . . keeps the mythic currents crackling."
--Publishers Weekly
John Shannow, The Jerusalem Man, lived in a world that had toppled on its axis. Civilization had been replaced by ruthlessness and savagery. Relentless in his quest for peace, Shannow followed a path that led only to bloodshed and sorrow.
Abaddon, the Lord of the Pit, sought to plunge mankind into a new Satanic era. His Hellborn army spewed forth from the Plague Lands with an unholy force stemming from human sacrifice. For it was the blood of innocents that fueled the corrupted Sipstrassi Stones of Power--the source of Abaddon's might.
But the Hellborn made a fatal mistake--they took the woman who had stolen Shannow's heart. He would move Heaven and Earth to save her or he would die trying.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
The setting for this series is a post apocalyptic type old West, based on the premise that very bad things happened when the planet shifted its axis, causing devastation.
A satanic cult of Hellborn is out to rule, using bloodstone sacrifices and other nasty power tricks.
They shouldn't have sacrified Jon Shannow's woman, though, because now they have the deadliest of enemies : The Jerusalem Man.
Not bad and certainly not Gemmell's best.......2007-03-23
There are some series that leave you tired at the end from all the mental twists and turns that you have to do to follow the plot. The Jon Shannow series, which begins with this book, is like that. The way the series ends is enough to keep you awake for awhile. Gemmell was juuuust author enough at this point in his career to pull this series off. Had he waited a few more years for his skills to develop, this might have been an incredible series. As it is, it is good, and the plot twists really imaginative, but the writing is just up to the level needed. Gemmell's Rigante series is, IMHO, the best he wrote with the Drenai series a close, close second. In Shannow you can see the traits he would try to develop in Waylander and Skilgannon. Shannow is sort of a prototype for them, I think. Anyway, the series is good on its own and essential for Gemmell-ophiles, but if you have read other Gemmell books, don't expect the quality to be quite up to par.
Jon Shannow -- Mal Reynolds long displaced brother.......2006-11-16
This is the book where the Stones of Power series makes a shift from Fantasy to Sci-Fi. It's a fluid, smooth motion that Gemmell does perfectly. We're introduced to a future where the past doesn't exist (or does it?) giant fish bones clutter the desert like a misplaced dinosaur, and there's no wood in the ark.
Jon Shannow is to a novel what Captain Mal Reynolds (of Firefly) is to TV/DVD. Strong, mysterious, a little sexy and more than a little dangerous if crossed. His six shooters are always clean and ready to be fired (and often are!) He reigns the space around him with an unforgivable iron fist. He shows no hesitation. But like all good main characters, he's imperfect. He has scars. He bleeds, he becomes unconscious, he loves and loses and is a character you love to love. He provides thought that continues well after the last page is turned... for that reason alone, this is a book worth buying.
A heroic fantasy western done by one of the greats!.......2001-03-09
I became an instant David Gemmell fan after reading the last book in his 'Stones of Power' series, and have not looked back since. Every single book he has written has more or less been fantastic. None however overshadow this classic book which I highly suggest to all who read this.
'Wolf in Shadow' takes place in the far-flung future where an accident has toppled the earth, nearly destroying life and turning most of the world into a wastland. It has also released the magical Sipstraasi stones back into the world. Civilisation has worked it's way up to horse and buggies, but there exists a great evil who has built a satanic army thirsting for dominance.
There also exists The Jerusalem Man, a noble gunslinger who walks the world searching for the city of the Bible. This is Jon Shannow, one of Gemmell's greatest creations. He is a good man, but a hardened violent one who's morality is edged with a murderous quickdraw. And when he meets with Abaddon, lord of Hell and the mysterious gaurdians of the Sipstraasi, it creates one of sci-fi's under-appreciated jewel's.
Gemmel, as he is known to do, writes a strong adventure book but lines it with deep philosophical debates on the nature of evil and morality, one of those rare books that'll keep you turning pages and thinking as well.
Just a great novel from a great writer.

Jon Shannow, The Jerusalem Man, lived in a world that had toppled on its axis. Civilization had been replaced by ruthlessness and savagery. The vile Lord of the Pit, seeking to plunge mankind into a new satanic era, had unleashed his Hellborn army. But when they took the woman Shannow loved, he vowed to save her or die trying.
Gemmell is perfect again. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

bool review.......2005-02-12
In the northern woods of Minnesota, two friends, Seth and Matt love the outdoors. They enjoy going hunting when the annual deer season comes around. A few days before deer season Seth and Matt go out and set on their deer stand to scout for deer. As the last sliver of light disapears they climb down from their stand and head back for the house. As they're walking throuh the woods, they here a rustling in the brush. Seth has the feeling they're being watched by wolves. On opening day of deer season Seth and Matt spot a wolf. Seth hears a loud shot, Matt had shot the wolf.
Book Review - Wolf Shadows by Mary Casanova.......2004-01-13
The book I am reviewing is Wolf Shadows, written by Mary Casanova. This non-fiction story takes place in the Minnesota woods. The story talks about wolves and their natural territory. I would suggest this story to anyone who enjoys wildlife, and suspense. From beginning to end, this book is very exciting and moving.
The story begins with two kids named Matt and Seth. Matt enjoys hunting and lives on a farm with his mother, father and baby sister. Seth is Matt's best friend and lives with his family in the town. The two boys spend their time farming, and when the day's work is done, they go hunting for deer.
Mary Casanova writes using a third person, omniscient author style. She frequently uses words like he, she and they when telling the story. Mary Casanova uses metaphors and personification to make the story fascinating. Her simplistic approach, and realistic dialogue, helps the reader understand the story and keep interest.
I loved this book! This story was very enticing. I enjoy reading about animals and their habitat. Being that this story was based on how wolves survive, it was able to capture my interest right from the start. I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys wildlife and nature. The exceptional storyline teaches people how to survive in the woods with wolves, and how a strong friendship can overcome any obstacle.
Another great book.......2004-01-08
This book will grip you--weither you like wolves or not. For those who hate wolves, you might pick Matt's side and for those who love em, seth's.
This book is mainly short and can be read in a single sitting. Of course, after it is done you will re-read. This book is just awesome! It teaches you to make desisions from what is right and wrong and much more then that...
A must read! Just pick it up at the library or just buy it yourself!
Adam's opinion about Wolf Shadows.......2001-06-01
Wolf Shadows taught me that friendship is very fragile and no matter how close you are it can still break. Wolf Shadows is a good book about friendship and adveture. I really loved Wolf Shadows.

Walking in the Shadow of a Rainbow........2005-07-07
I have read many wolf books, but this one brings a feeling of bondage between Man and Wolf. But the story is not goody-goody. There are bounty hunters and trappers as there are in real life. This book refers to a map in the beginning of the book a lot, but you can manage to do without it, its not vital. Though this is a slightly shorter book it still has all the action and emotions as if you were really there. It is a really good buy and would recomend it to any wolf or animal lover.
Absolutely Incredible.......2003-10-25
Just finished reading this and it is truly the most powerful factual story I have ever read. It has a similar thread to a fiction novel by another Native American author, Ghost in the Rainbow. There is a ghost wolf Indian spirit in that story, and I couldn't read this story without referring back to that one. The Native Americans know something about wolves, and this book touches upon that something...are wolves spirit creatures? I am of the opinion, because of these two books, to believe wolves are a lot more than animals. I can only encourage people to read this story. You will never be the same.
"Shadow of a Rainbow": Silver Screen for the Silver Skin?.......2002-07-24
There are three non-religious books I read and re-read constantly. "In the Shadow of a Rainbow" is one of them. Man and wolf become alive before our eyes, with unexpected depth and dimension, as does the land of BC itself - and my life has become the richer.
I despair of ever seeing this story done properly on film, but there is one person who could do it justice - Hayao Miyazaki, master storyteller from Japan, known the US for "Totoro," "Kiki's Delivery Service," and "Princess Mononoke." (He could also do a worthy animated "Diary of Anne Frank." With the eye and heart of a spiritual magician, and artist's touch to match, I wait for him to bring Nahani alive on the screen. In the meantime, I'll just have to keep reading the book itself...
Connections.......2002-02-05
What a lovely book. Leslie has captured the remarkable story of a young Indian man, who is befriended by a wolf, in living color. Greg (the Indian) and Nahani (the white wolf) meet when Nahani brings her pack into the area where Greg is prospecting for gold . Thanks to Greg's willingness to watch and learn from the wolves, along with his inherent respect for their boundaries and ways of doing things, the leader of the pack (Nahani)gradually comes to trust him. Eventually she sits by his fire, allows him to scratch her back, and pull ticks from her skin. This mutually satisfying relationship ends when the first snows of winter arrive and Greg must return to town.
Back in civilization, Greg discovers that Nahani has earned a reputation as a killer. There is a large reward being offered to anyone who can kill her and bring in the skin. Greg is naturally upset by this, and tries to convince people that the wolf is not a threat. He is opposed by a trapper named Dan who does all he can to stop Greg from helping the wolf. Concerned for Nahani's safety, Greg embarks on a 3-year quest to locate the wolf and save her if he can.
The story of how Greg manages to locate and track Nahani through one of the remotest and most inaccessible regions of the country is as inspiring as it is fascinating. Better still is the story of what happens when Greg eventually locates the wolves.
This story, which ends on a very positive note, is said to be true. It was told to the author (Robert Franklin Leslie) by Greg himself. Aside from the few places where human motivations and emotions are attributed to the wolf, the story rings true. It is a real treat for anyone who believes in the interconnectedness of all living things.
One of the best that I've read!.......2001-01-09
I have read many books, both fictional and non-fictional, about wolves. This book was truly one of the best. It was refreshing to read a story about a wolf where it did not end up dead by the end of the story yet, the story is realistic. If you love wolves, you will be amazed at the friendship that is possible between a human and a pack of wolves. I will re-read this one!

Ogami Itto comes to a major fork on the Assassin's Road.......2002-11-03
Although it is too early to tell what it portends for this manga epic, the story of Lone Wolf and Cub moves into a new stage by the end of Volume 9 "Echo of the Assassin." Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima set up this shift by continuing to tell tales that tend to focus more on supporting characters than on Ogami Itto's journey on the assassin's road:
(45) "Wife of the Heart" refers to O-Chiyo, a young woman who endures all sorts of shames because of her respect and love for a samurai who bore a punishment in her stead. Now he dreams of building a bridge across the Omono, if only he can convice his lord to listen. Then Ogami Itto arrives and the story takes a couple of very interesting twists in what proves to be a rather touching little tale.
(46) "Wandering Samarai" is another one of these tales that deals with the concept of bushido as the title character, a rogue swordsman-for-hire, seeks not only a duel with Ogami Itto, but the ronin's judgment. The first two stories of this volume have in common the worthiness of Lone Wolf's opponents, an element that has become increasing prominent as the series continues.
(47) "Echo of the Assassin" offers another interesting variation on this theme as Lone Wolf meets up with a stranger who unnecessarily help him fend off assassins from the Kurokuwa ninja clan. The stranger argues with Lone Wolf about his chosen path and what he is doing to Daigoro (whose vocabulary expands by about ten words in this episode).
(48) "Naked Worms" is not the title story for this volume but it is the most important one despite a title that does not lend itself to being overly promoted. The title refers to the lowly river porters, the hadaka-mushi, who carry travelers across the Oi river. When Ogami Itto shows up and wants to join this band of ruffians, their boss suspects something, but is willing to see how it plays out. Of course, we know this has to be another one of Lone Wolf's cunning subterfuges and assume he is simply waiting for his next victim to come cross the river. However, what makes this one interesting is that we are wrong on that score and our expectations as to what will happen next in this epic is going to change radically at this point.
(49) "The Yagyu Letter: Prologue" is a short tale whose sole purpose is for the leader of the Yagyu to announce that Ogami's latest deed has violated their agreement, and they will now send the full power of their confederates and assassins to kill Lone Wolf and Cub.
Obviously, things will continue to get most interesting in the next couple of volumes. Clearly, what is past, is prologue to what is to come. I continue to read these stories at the rate of one and night in anticipation of the end of the tale sometime early next year.
Book Description
Freedom is not a vague mystical concept. True freedom needs to be fought for and attained. In Shadows of Wolf Fire Theun lifts the veils of myth as he takes us back to the roots of freedom buried within another time, another place.
Having gone back to the very beginning, Theun goes on to show what freedom means for the warrior today, and how, in practical terms, we can set about achieving it in our lives.
Customer Reviews:
many voices many ways.......2006-03-17
It is so refreshing to see the Totlec tradition embraced by some many and to hear another voice showing people the way toward freedom.
This book reminds me of the story of the Zen master pointing at the moon. The student is reminded to look at the moon and not focus on the master's finger that merely shows the way.
However you connect with your spirit, with the greatness of who and what you are - enjoy the process.
A very interesting read!
Finding the Heart.......2002-07-15
In the journey towards self-realization, SOWF serves as a springboard that catapults the reader to move beyond the "intellectual masturbation" and romanticism that many so-called spiritual books have regurgitated and repackaged. Within these pages are the tried and tested tools that are most practical and applicable to our daily lives.
How do we affect change to promote growth and evolution within ourselves so that, in turn, we may assist humanity in moving towards its own collective maturity? How does our own state of mind, when lost in chaos and confusion, affect the very interrelationship of life on a grander scale? How do we utilise our folly to gain a better understanding of the concept that life doesn't just happen, but instead should be lived and cherished as the most exhilarating adventure of all.
This book will make you remember.
Unfolding the Wings of Perception.......2002-06-13
Unlike many, my discovery of Theun Mares and the Toltec Teachings did not come through the Castaneda camp. In fact, to this day I still have not read straight through any one of Dr. Castaneda's books.
In any case, after I read "Return of the Warriors" by Theun I quickly ordered all of his books which up until that point did not include "Shadows of Wolf Fire."
It was with great anticipation that I began Theun's latest work on the Toltec Teachings: "Shadows of Wolf Fire." And I was never disappointed. In fact, moved to tears in many parts, puzzled and somewhat overwhelmed in others, I found in this work
answers to many of the questions raised within me from reading his earlier volumes of the Toltec Teachings.
In a world so riddled with strife, so fragmented by separative behavior and thinking and so very far from the potential magic inherent within each of us, Theun's newest book is a joy. It makes me glad to be alive and thankful for each day as I work to unfold the mystery which is me.
Life Changing.......2002-05-24
It is very difficult to say more than I highly recommend "Shadows Of Wolf Fire". I eagerly awaited this book for months after reading the others in the series three times each. So much so, I purchased a Limited Edition Leather Bound book. That should tell you something. This is not a book to be read without first reading the other three. My recomendation to any-one, would be to read Volume 1, "Return Of The Warriors". Personally, I don't see how anyone can read the first volume without eagerly consuming the other three. Anything else I could say seems to place me in a "catch 22" situation, which you can only understand after reading and begining to live the wonderful, mysterious teachings that flow through them. I have never met Theun Mares personally or participated in any of his workshops, but I am truly honored to be a recipient of his purpose. To recomend the book in some way seems futile for I know that all that will read it have all been already determined by fate. In that regard, all I have to say is "thank you so much Thuen Mares."

Shadows of Wolf Fire

Theun Mares
Reviewed by Anthony Gagliano
In his latest book, Shadows of Wolf Fire, Theun Mares adds another chapter to the unveiling of the Toltec Legacy, a task he first began seven years ago with the publication of Return of The Warriors and continued in Cry of The Eagle and The Mists of Dragon Lore. Readers of these works, as well as serious students of Carlos Castaneda, will find in Shadows of Wolf Fire a most important addition to their understanding of what it means to walk the warrior's path, and more importantly, The Path With A Heart. This fourth volume in the series examines many topics which will be of great interest, including the training of the three and four pronged nagal; the socerer's explanation; the relationship between the dreamer and the dreamed; and the role of gender in the evolution of awareness, as well as many others. Fans of Tales of Power will find themselves on the edge of their seats.
I recommend this book without reservation, as I have the first three volumes. I do so not only out respect for Mr. Mare's works, but as a long time student of the teachings of Don Juan as first introduced to the modern world by his most famous student. I believe that Mr. Mares represents the truest segue from the teachings of Don Juan as imparted to Dr. Castaneda, both of whom the author acknowledges in the preface of the book. Long ago, a reviewer of one of Castaneda's works wrote that the significance of what the writer had achieved could not be overestimated. I can, with all my heart, and with all the powers of discrimination available to me, say the same of Theun Mares and The Shadows of Wolf Fire.

Wow.......2006-07-11
This is the story of a young white girl, Alys, that rescues a young indian boy and his sister by means of some secret caves under her house. In return the young boy, Moon Wolf, wows to make her his wife when they are old enough if only she'll come with him to his tribe. She declines and years later, after having spent time back east learning how to be a lady, she returns to her mum at Fort Benton, only to learn that a rogue indian called Wolf Shadow harasses the bulltrains containing goods destined for his people. One day she spots blood on the ground after such an attack and follows it....right back to the secret caves of her childhood. She finds Wolf Shadow injured and heavily bleeding but takes on the task of nursing him back to health. During this time she comes to realize that Wolf Shadow and the young boy Moon Wolf with whom she was severely smitten as a young girl, is one and the same person. They rediscover the bond between them and mutual friendship, respect and in the end love blossoms even though Wolf Shadow has woved not to take a wife for as long as he is needed to interfere with the illegal trade of whiskey to his people.
I brought this book with me on holiday and it took me only two late in the evening sittings to finish it - I just couldn't put it down. Once more Karen Kay tops herself and has delievered a true keeper.
Nonexistent plot and bad writing.......2002-07-19
If you like cardboard characters, unnatural dialogue, and just plain bad writing, you'll love this turkey. Otherwise, don't waste your money.
A good book but it could have been better..........2001-09-23
This is a good story, but it could have been better...Mind you, I enjoyed reading all of Karen Kay's books..she is a great writer.. I am just waiting for her next one...her "Proud Wolf's woman", and "White Eagle's touch" are still my favourite among her books...
Moonwolf's love for Aly's.......2001-04-04
This is the first book that I have read by Karen Kay, I enjoyed the book very much. Moonwolf's love for Aly's and to teach her the warrior's way. I really enjoyed it.
Wolf Shadow's Promise.......2000-12-29
I have never wanted to read historical romance novels. (All the flowery words are too much!) This book was not like that. I am of indian heritage and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was a book I did not want to put down. I am awaiting her next book in the series of "The Legendary Warriors." I would recommend this book to anyone that likes romance as well as adventure. I am now hooked on Karen Kay.

Customer Reviews:
one rah, two blah...........2006-01-26
my review, short and sweet and to the point-The Krinard story was just interesting enough to be good, but I couldn't finish either the Lee or Vaughn story. Like another reviewer stated- both were boring and inplausible.
My suggestion-save your money and get it from the library, or just skip it.
3 stars for Krinard's story.
Great romance anthology!.......2005-08-25
This is the annual Harlequin Halloween romance anthology. The stories in the book are written by two of the top paranormal romance writers in the genre ( Evelyn Vaughn and Susan Krinard) and one is by fantasy writer Tanith Lee.
These are romances with paranormal themes. The emphasis in these novellas is on strong sexual tension in the midst of otherworldly happenings......
Susan Krinard's werewolf tale is fast, sexy and dangerous- the heroine is drawn to her dark lover even though she does not trust him. Great gothic elements make this one stay with you long after reading.
Tanith Lee introduces us to a man in stone who watches over his garden..... this one has a good suspense story mixed with supernatural hauntings and a ghostly mystery. The romance is complicated and the conflict not readily dismissed. Well written- I look forward to more in the new LUNA line by Ms. Lee!
Evelyn Vaughn has written an outrageous supernatural tale with all the elements of a good and cheesy horror movie! I love the portal to hell opening in her closet and how she asks the sexy super in her building to help her get rid of it! Together they track down the source of her problems and exterminate them- sharing an intense attraction and some steamy sex along the way.... This one is actually pretty tongue in cheek- flies by!
For more paranormal books- I recommend THE CIRCLE series by Evelyn Vaughn, The Immortal Witches series by Maggie SHayne ( don't miss the 4th in that series- you need to pick up OUT OF THIS WORLD another anthology to complete it!)Also recommended- The Vampire Viscount by Karen Harbaugh.
Super tedious .......2005-08-15
Looking for a cure for insomnia? Try this book. Works like a dream.
Seriously, I bought this book because I love romance and also enjoy some elements of the supernatural, such as vampires. The book seemed to offer the right sort of combination - or so I thought. I was wrong.
Susan Krinard's Kiss of the Wolf started vaguely promisingly, but I quickly found it increasingly difficult to turn the pages. LA plastic surgeon trying to find herself goes to the Louisiana bayou - well, naturally, where else would she go? - and stumbles into a mystery involving a dead distant relative to whom she bears an uncanny resemblance. Like you do. And, of course, she also encounters a couple of werewolves and a murdering thug in nice-guy clothing. Falls into bed with Werewolf 1 not long after, despite his surly behaviour, and promptly falls in love with him and realises how much she loves the bayou despite there being not a lot of need for plastic surgeons in deepest Louisiana. Yeah, right. Yawn.
Novella 2 appeared to offer a little more promise. Tanith Lee's Shadow Kissing was apparently about a haunted apartment, yet it wasn't really. Though there was a seemingly self-propelling statue, also bearing a striking resemblance to a character in the novella. Between irritating minor characters (including one with the unlikely name of Cinnamon) and a so-called hero who was a complete jerk, I don't know what there was to like about this. Plus, although Lee got some of the English nuances correct, there were several references that jarred given the setting was London and the characters English.
And finally - yes, finally I got close to the end! - there was Novella 3. The Devil She Knew, by Evelyn Vaughan. Mercy of mercies, this one was about 40 pages shorter than the other two. Woman finds a strange fire in her walk-in closet. Like you do. Woman figures out within about ten seconds that she's got a portal to hell in her bedroom. Of course! Naturally, that's the first conclusion one would jump to. And when she calls her friendly maintenance man - whom we progressively discover manages, and in fact owns, her building - he naturally jumps to the same conclusion. This one went on and on, despite being shorter. But once the author got over wasting pages and pages on irrelevant, boring stuff (such as lunch with the heroine's family) and they suddenly, by amazing coincidence, figure out who's behind it and go visit the guy (hey, did you curse me with the fires of hell? Um... maybe), everything is skimmed over so quickly that it's completely unclear what actually happened.
Don't waste your money. This one is going straight to the recycling pile, and all three authors are on my `forget it!' list!

Tanith Lee is just awesome.......2005-07-24
There are three stories here, all of which are self-contained. That's a rarity these days, for this kind of compendium.
I'm not a fan of werewolf books, so the Krinard, though lushly evokative of the Louisiana bayou, didn't intrigue me as much as the other two stories.
The Vaughn story was a little too silly for my taste. A portal to hell, and only the bad boy can save you from it? And a gorgeous landlord? Heavens, that IS fantasy. The story itself is very light, but quite fun.
The tale worth reading the book for, though is the Lee. Her writing brings the magic eerily alive. The heroine comes to life, and her situation and choices draw the reader in. The romance is also very differently written than most romance, and is a real breath of fresh air.
The other two stories, though, are just average. So I'm giving an average mark (would give 3.5 if I could).

Paranormal romance anthology.......2004-04-24
The first story by one of my favourite authors, Susan Krinard is by far the best of the three stories. Dana, a successful plastic surgeon from the West Coast travels to Big Marsh in Louisiana to escape her hectic life. There she meets Remy, a man clothed in mystery, avoided and feared by the locals, who lives on a boat out in the backwaters. Dana becomes embroiled in the search for the answers to the disappearance of her cousin. Can she trust Remy or is he a danger to her? The more time she spends with Remy, the more she becomes attracted to him. The atmosphere and the tension between Remy and Dana is electric. This is a good little story full of excitement and danger with romance thrown in aswell.
The second story is by Tanith Lee. Vivien agrees to look after her friends flat in London whilst the friend goes away on holiday. In the garden, Vivien sees the most beautiful man she have ever set her eyes on but he is a stone statue. The following day Vivien meets of the owner of the statue, Connor, a spitting image of the statue. The statue of the beautiful man is an ancestor of Connor. Strange things start happening in the flat, empty champagne flutes appear, roses with no petals are found in the kitchen. Are there paranormal happenings taking place in the flat and what is the connection with the statue or is there a more simple explanation? More of a mystery rather than romance but the story has charm.
The third story is by Evelyn Vaughn. Marcy opens the door to her a wardrobe and is greeted by flames, a portal to hell. She calls on the help of her gorgeous landlord, Tomas. Together they try to solve the problem of the wardrobe, calling the help of a priest who they lose in the portal and finally tracking down the culprit. This is an enjoyable saucy romp of a story, very fun and tongue in cheek but again but don't expect too much romance.

fine Indian romance.......2003-07-03
In Buffalo Springs, Chance McCloud is playing cards when Edward Bryant approaches him with an offer of $500 for twenty minutes of his time. Edward asks Chance to find his daughter stolen by the Sioux a decade ago. Chance tells the man that he is wasting his money, as his daughter is Indian. Edward's wife Rosalia appears pleading for Chance's help even as her husband increases the pot to $15,000. After seeing Rosalia, Chance is confident he knows where to find Teresa.
Chance visits the tribe that raised him as a half-breed to inform Blue Rain that her birth name is Teresa and her biological parents want her to come home. Blue Rain expects to wed a tribesman though she is attracted to Chance known among the tribe as Wolf Shadow, but tells him she is happy with her life. However, a Crow raid kills her future spouse and her Indian parents. She still does not want to leave so Chance takes her white parents to the tribe to see her even as he finds himself falling in love with her.
Known for her Indian romances, award winning Madeline Baker provides her readers with an exciting and insightful tale. The lead protagonists are a charming pair and the support cast adds depth to the novel. Though difficult choices are resolved rather easily through the death of the key players, fans will appreciate this warm Indian romance.
