We know the shadow by many names: alter ego, lower self, the dark twin, repressed self, id. Carl Jung once said that the shadow "is the person you would rather not be." But even if you choose to hide your dark side, it will still cast a shadow, according to author Debbie Ford. Rather than reject the seemingly undesirable parts of ourselves, Ford offers advice on how to confront our shadows. Only by owning every aspect of yourself can you achieve harmony and "let your own light shine," she explains. "The purpose of doing shadow work, is to become whole. To end our suffering. To stop hiding ourselves from ourselves. Once we do this we can stop hiding ourselves from the rest of the world."

As threatening as shadow work may seem, it is often very effective in creating transformation. Ford's step-by-step guidebook is modeled on a highly successful course she developed about embracing the shadow. Ultimately, she helps readers illuminate the gifts and strengths that lie within the shadows. Although this works sound vague, clouded in dark metaphors, Ford manages to make it clear and specific. She has the writing gifts of a successful seminar leader--inspirational, trustworthy, and able to convey murky material with grace and ease. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Debbie Ford believes that we each hold within us a trace of every human characteristic that exists, the capacity for every human emotion. We are born with the ability to express this entire spectrum of characteristics. But, Ford points out, our families and our society send us strong messages about which ones are good and bad. So when certain impulses arise, we deny them instead of confronting them, giving them a healthy voice, then letting them go. It is to these feelings that Ford turns our attention, these parts of our selves that don't fit the personae we have created for the rest of the world. She shows us the effects of living in the dark, of keeping all our supposedly unsavory impulses under wraps. We find ourselves disproportionately frustrated and angry at the selfishness of friends, the laziness of colleagues, the arrogance of siblings. When we are unable to reconcile similar impulses in ourselves, Ford explains, we waste our own energy judging others instead of empathizing. But most important, we deny ourselves the power and freedom of living authentically. Through the stories and exercises in The Dark Side of the Light Chasers, Debbie Ford shows us not only how to recognize our hidden emotions, but also how to find the gifts they offer us. The very impulses we most fear may be the key to what is lacking in our lives.

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Side of the Light Chasers - Debbie Ford.......2007-05-26

This book will help you "find" yourself. A very useable aide in self-enlightenment. Does what it says it can.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-05-12

I've read hundreds of self help books. This one is straight forward, courageous and at times a bit brutal. I'll admit that sometimes she suggests things I didn't want to face in myself. I was especially taken with her open honesty about her prejudices, which she didn't believe she had. Out of all self-help books I've read, this is in my top 5 if you want to transform your life into something more whole and more powerful than anything you've known.

5 out of 5 stars Applicable from the first page.......2007-01-18

This book is a very practical guide to accepting yourself rather than trying to change yourself. It is very user friendly and easy to read and understand. You can either use it as a "handbook" for how to be "whole" or as a way to enhance your qualities in your spritual life. It can easily be read several times. There are exercises to do that you may want to do immediately or return to when you have a different level of understanding of the book. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing!.......2007-01-03

If you were allowed only one self help book, this is the one. Start this book with an open mind if you want to change your life for the better.
So many of my questions were answered with this book. Be aware of the big mirror that will appear before you and embrace it. This book will peel away layers of feelings and emotions you never knew you had. Follow this book and your life will change. I've read a lot of books in my day and this one really digs deep and leads you to a more peaceful and calm life.
You will find the power of forgiveness is really huge.

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK TO END IGNORANCE AND SPREAD ENLIGHTENMENT.......2007-01-03

This is the most helpful book l have ever read in my life. lt should be mandatory reading for every human. lt will make you see who you really are, not judge others and also look at things from others perspectives, heal any parts that need to be healed, and make you a stronger, better person- all around. lts the first step toward enlightenment. lt will change your life. lt can change people. l wouldnt be who l am today if someone hadnt gave me this book. lt will make you an authentic person who takes pride in who you are. lts the tool for reaching well being, which is a euphoric feeling, and makes a perfect gift for anyone who is feeling any discontent with their life, theirself, or others. ld also recommend 'finding your own north star' by martha beck.

I had long been attracted to the image of the cover of this book with the glowing flower and the butterfly. When it came I couldn't wait to read it and look at it. There are so many wonderful tips in this book, one especially is about how to use analogous colors to change colors from light to dark without using complements. This book is beautiful and very helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying........2007-08-24

I bought this book thinking it would be as good as Practical Poser 6. It isn't. At best this is an intro to Poser possibilities. It doesn't completely walk you through anything. It hints and suggests you might be able to do some things with Poser 7 but then directs you to free websites to actually learn how to do them. If you can use Google, then you don't need this book.

5 out of 5 stars Computer libraries won't want to miss this........2007-03-12

If you have the basics down with Poser and want to move to the next level, PRACTICAL POSER 7 is for you: the computer user who already has some grounding and wants to move up. It's an updated edition of a best-seller and covers all of Poser 7's capabilities, from saving custom faces in the Face Room and using the Hair Room to add hair to clothing to texturing, creating custom morphs, UV mapping and more. With black and white screen shot examples throughout, you can't go wrong - and many a graphics teacher will want to use PRACTICAL POSER 7 as a classroom text. Computer libraries won't want to miss this.

2 out of 5 stars Practical Poser 7.......2007-02-06

Authors should use Adobe Tutorials as a model. Practical Poser 7 is a text for reading, not a tutorial for doing. It is not self contained with all materials needed to do the tutorials. It is also obviously keyed to stimulate purchases from Content Paradise. Needs considerable improvement. Not intuitive.

5 out of 5 stars Intermediate to Advanced Level Book.......2007-02-01

This book is listed as a beginning to intermediate level book. I think it's actually a little higher than that. It presumes that you have at least reviewed the Reference Manual, and hopefully worked through the Tutorial Manual. This is a tutorial style book. It takes you through a series of steps that will teach you more about the design of a person than you imagined.

After going through this book, I'm not going to say that the people making the next Harry Potter movie will jump at the chance to hire you, but I will say that you'll know a hell of a lot more about the computer creation of characters than you did when you started.

The key is to make characters look real. And here the authors point out little things like what do the fingers do in the hand that isn't reaching for something. And how do you make the torso bend with the body so that it looks real.

All in all, quite an exceptional book that I highly recommend. These people know what they are doing and know how to write about it.

The CD supplied with the book has a wealth of material including:

All the files used in the book and all of the images
Numerous Poser figures from a variety of sources
UV Mapper Software (Classic version)
Additional material from previous versions of this book

2 out of 5 stars Draggy, unrealistic, boring romance, horrendous ending.......2007-09-07

I've heard that this book was written BEFORE all the others in the series, and considering how popular Dee Henderson's books seem to be, I'm pretty sure this wasn't a good place to start, I'll have to check out the other books in the series.

The story is pretty simple. A young rich woman meets a football star her age who wants something more from the women in his life. She's being pursued by a man who kidnapped her when she was a kid and killed her twin sister. She's constantly (like CONSTANTLY) under FBI surveillance in order to catch this bad guy at large. She falls in love with this football star and must decide if being with him and putting him in danger is worth it. Oh, she's really REALLY traumatized by this childhood experience to the point where it runs her life. Ok, whatever.

So what's so bad? Well, the writing drags on WAY too much once the "romance" gets started (I really don't need to know dumb little details, like that a person put down their drink), and the characters are VERY difficult for an average person to relate to. Just the fact that it seems the entire American FBI is securing this woman constantly shows how freaking rich she is, being the daughter of a wealthy ambassador I couldn't find myself relating to her pain. Oh, the pain. The pain, the pain, the CONSTANT reminders of how horrible she feels become so overused it's laughable. There are literally some chapters as to where NOTHING new happens, and I felt like so much stuff could've just been edited. Plus there were parts I had to reread because the author was obviously trying to go for the "read between the lines" style but ended up writing something that simply didn't make grammatical sense.
There isn't ANY characterization put into this bad guy who's taunting her and sending her packages, so you're simply reading just to see if there'll be some kind of a twist at the end. There isn't. And the final "confrontation" between her and mr. bad guy is SO UNBELIEVABLY CLICHED AND STUPID it makes you want to throw the book across the room. I was like "I paid 14 bucks for this?!"
This is not to also mention that the final "confrontation" is like a paragraph long. It's pathetic. Although the final note by the author makes it seem like she is SO in love with these characters. I want to ask "did you actually READ this after you wrote it?"
On top of this, the "Christian" themes feel so tacked on, they're like an afterthought, very much unlike a good Christian fiction author like Ted Dekker, who woves his Christian themes into the story and into each character very well, has good Biblical themes, makes it the basis for his stories and isn't afraid to use the word "Jesus." By the end I really knew nothing of either of these main characters even though I spent over 300 pages getting to supposedly know them.

All said and done, this really isn't a good book. In fact, I'd have to go on record and say it's one of the worst I've ever read. Still, I hold hope for this author, I'll definitely check out one of her other books. The writing in this one just doesn't GRAB you, ya know?

3 out of 5 stars Romance without much suspense, for Christian readers........2007-08-25

Sara is the daughter of a diplomat, and a successful author. As a child, she and her sister were kidnapped and her sister died. One of the kidnappers is still at large and Sara lives under constant protection. One day she meets Adam Black, a retired football player. They fall in love, but Sara's lifestyle may be too much of an obstacle for their relationship to work.

"Danger in the Shadows" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. But the focus is on the romance and unfortunately, there's not really much suspense at all. The few suspense sequences are over just as soon as they begin. Henderson has created a nice character in Sara, and her story is interesting, but I would have liked there to be more suspense. Christian readers may like the religious parts of the story, but personally I found them unnecessary, but still not too distracting.

I would recommend "Danger in the Shadows" to Christian romance readers. Suspense readers (Christian or not) may want to look for something else.

    5 out of 5 stars K. Baggatts .......2007-05-11

This book was very interesting. The story was well told and well written, very descriptive. I was able to imagine the story as if I were watching a movie. The details made it easy to imagine and follow along. Christian fiction with action, love, suspense...
I have never read a book like this and I didn't even know christian themed books existed but now I'm hooked. I am currently reading the O'Malley series and I am enjoying it very much. The story carries on throughout several books, thereby, letting you get to know the characters. I didn't know series books existed either. Brilliant!

3 out of 5 stars Love Dee Hendersen but was a little disappointed.......2007-03-14

The story is a good one. You will be captivated in the beginning of the book but after awhile it d r a g s o u t about Sara and her pain. I think explaining her pain and what she has to live out is important but I think it seemed to just fill in pages to make the story longer. Maybe it there were more flashbacks to things that happened as she grew up and how it affected her would have been more intriguing.

I read all the O'Malley books and True Honor, True Courage and love them all.

    5 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-03-10

2 out of 5 stars Not very useful except as a source for ideas.......2007-05-31

This book will not significantly improve your understanding of how light affects and creates shadows on form. However, I don't believe any book can do that. You can learn to draw a realistic face from your imagination, but the variations of how light will affect forms are infinite. Most artists who get good at "faking" it rely on a good understanding of form and perspective, backed by countless hours spent observing and drawing things under various lighting situations. They basically are always relying on observation, be it direct, photographic, or remembered. Try to think of an artist who could create truly convincing, consistent lighting for a scene from their head. I can't think of any. I guess my point is, let's not be too hard on old Burney, he was just trying to make a buck:)

If this book has a practical application, it's probably as a collection of creative ways to light your subjects to achieve particular dramatic affects. Fun to flip through, but just not all that useful.

4 out of 5 stars Light & Shade in Art.......2007-01-09

This book is good to illustrate the phenomena of light in a composition. It discusses the different kinds of light and their effect on the environment of the picture. Worth getting to use as reference material.

3 out of 5 stars Highly detailed teaching- analytical light & shade..........2006-06-05

...An intermediate-to-advanced, in-depth, analytical treatment- I really wanted to like this... yet...

Flipping quickly through this work, it's pretty obvious this isn't one of Hogarth's best. I'm specifically referring to drawing quality- the teaching & concepts here are very detailed, analytical, and sometimes even helpful. Filled with Hogarth's own artwork, as well as work by other artists, it sure seems like someone dropped the ball on image quality & content. The images here *teach principles* well enough; it's just that I can pretty much count on one hand the number of images that I actually *like* to look at. And that's a pretty big problem(!). The entire book is in black & white mixed-media, which is fine by me as long as the artwork is *inspirational*...

Still, the actual teaching here on light & shade is really pretty detailed. Check out this listing of 'light-types' explained & depicted: silhouette; minimal; single-source; double-source; flat-diffused; moonlight; sculptural; spatial; environmental; textural; transparent; fragmentation; radiant; and expressive (whew!). Who knew there were this many kinds of light? But again- the pictures don't do the words any justice when the pictures fail to excite & inspire. This confirms to me something I had already assumed: besides a few good art instruction books to help with getting started, the best way to learn to draw anything is by copying photos & artwork by our own favorite artists. This seems *especially* true in the case of light & shade.

Will some people love this book? Sure! It's nice to see the several Tarzan pictures here- at least for curiosity's sake. But I think most people, including Hogarth fans like myself, will pretty readily admit this book is about average at best- and not really helpful at all for beginners (not recommended!). It's certainly the weakest link in his 6-book Dynamic Drawing series. If it *continues* to stay in print, it'll likely be based mainly on the strength of Hogarth's famous name.

P.S. A better book for beginners? Walt Reed's The Figure! It contains somewhat brief but *excellent* tips on basic light & shade.

4 out of 5 stars these other reviewers must be crazy..........2006-05-23

This book is precise, and it's comprehensive. It may not take you by the hand and say "step 1, draw a circle..." but I don't think this is really a HOW-TO type of book. It's more of a WHY book. It explains to artists the fundamental reasons to use a wide range of specific lighting theories, and it describes these theories very well (Hogarth's explanations work for me, and probably for other people in the worlds of comics, animation, etc.).

This book doesn't aim to be your one-and-only reference on the subject of lighting (an extremely technical subject to be sure). It's primary focus is not on color, but on form, and it may not talk about lighting the way that 3D artists do. But I've learned a ton from this book, and I refer to it often.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent book of examples.......2006-05-04

If you're looking for explicit or step-by-step instruction on applying lighting and shadow to your drawing, this probably isn't the book for you. If, on the other hand, you're looking for real-world illustration examples of just about every type of lighting situation (even through fog and rain), be sure to pick this one up!

Burne Hogarth, with his immaculate drawing style, presents examples of everything from multi-point lighting to backlighting. I particularly enjoyed his examples of lighting the foreground, middle ground, and background differently. As always, the author's books are a joy just to look through.

    Book Description

Elena Baxter can work miracles with her hands. She can coax bones to knit, flesh to heal. She can mend the mind. She has been doing such work for almost all of her twenty-eight years. That is why she will be taken.

The media called it a rampage of terror, the recent murders. But fighting crime is why Artur Loginov joined Dirk & Steele. The international detective agency specializes in the impossible, and their creed is simple: Help those in need, no matter how difficult, and no matter what, keep the secret safe. For the agency helps its employees, too; people like Artur -- the gifted, the tormented. Dirk & Steele gave the Russian emigre purpose, protection, community...and refuge from his past, for who can trust a man who can start a fire with his mind, or shape-shift, or read others' thoughts as easily as drawing breath? For his similar talent, Artur will be taken.

Into the darkness Elena and Artur will be drawn, into the clutches of evil. Cornered, isolated, caged, they will fight for their very souls. But salvation awaits. it exists in a form least expected: a dream of a face, a brush of a mind, the hint of a kiss, and finally, at long last, a SHADOW TOUCH.

    4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-27

I thought I would give this a go when I saw it because she has written an X-Men novel. Some definite similarities, so she is pretty clearly a fan.

At the start, two people with superhuman mental abilities are kidnapped and subjected to nasty testing and imprisonment.

When they finally escape they discover a couple of shapeshifters held there, and the woman discovers the man has connections to an agency called Dirk and Steele that knows about this.

Mind controllers and killers are after them, and they have to escape through Russia and try and work out what is actually going on.

She discovers there are others, people who can disappear, electrokinetics, and all sorts of abilities at Dirk and Steele.

A pretty decent adventure, and light on the romance side of things, despite the cover.

Superfans shouldn't mind this one, and it is part of a series.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2007-08-15

This is Elana (healer) and Artur Loginov's story.

Both are captured by the "dark side" for their abilities.

This book introduces "us" to Rictor. I hope he gets his own story...

Rictor likes Elana--he was her guard of sorts, but he too was a captive (being controlled by the spider lady).

Artur and Elana were wonderful characters.

This was a fun read, entertaining and well written.

    3 out of 5 stars Relentless violence/nastiness.......2007-03-17

The writing is good, but the plot wore me out about halfway through the book. I feel bad about not liking it better; it just wasn't my teacup.

    5 out of 5 stars Exciting..........2006-11-06

This dark, action packed, paranormal romance adventure can be summed up in one word: M O R E

4 out of 5 stars A thrilling read! Hard to put down........2006-10-27

Artur, one of Dirk & Steele's investigators, is kidnapped from his home and taken to a secret location to be studied like a lab rat. His captors belong to a shadowy criminal organization, named the Consortium, headed by a powerful psychic named Beatrix.

The Consortium is collecting people with special psychic abilities to study, to recruit and to control. But they have special interest in Artur. He holds a secret that no one else knows, one that the Consortium will do what's necessary to get out of him.

Artur soon discovers others with similar special abilities and even shape shifters in the secret location he's being held. During his stay, he crosses paths with a beautiful woman who is also a captive. Elena has a powerful ability to heal people. Like Artur, the Consortium has a special interest in her. When Artur and Elena meet in the hallway, she heals his wounds and inadvertently establishes an unbreakable psychic link with him that helps join their psychic strengths as they fight their captors.

Artur and Elena eventually escape their captors with the help of a mysterious character who refuses to reveal who or what he is. It's not long after their escape that they discover Beatrix's evil plans. She is greedy for power and her plan is to use mind control to unite the mafia organizations in each country under her control.

With the help of other Dirk & Steele investigators, Artur and Elena try to thwart Beatrix's plans, but their attempts go awry when Artur is captured once again and the Consortium uses him as bait to lure Elena back into their clutches.

This was an exciting read; full of adventure and romance. I couldn't put it down. If, however, I had to compare it to another Dirk & Steele book, like The Tiger Eye, I'd say that it pales a bit in comparison. Despite that, I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-02-03

This is a romantic thriller. Because the bad guy was so vicious it was almost too scary for me. The bad guy framed good guy Connnor and no one believed him for a long time, which was frustrating for the reader. Because of this frustration, this was my least favorite of her books, but I still loved it. I also loved the way the three McCloud brothers talked to each other and interacted. I've read all five of her books. She is one of my favorite authors.

4 out of 5 stars Started off great..........2006-11-13

This book started off great. Connor and Erin were hot, with just enough longing and emotional buildup to make it very interesting. But then the plot just dragged and Connor was being setup to look crazy for hundreds of pages with no relief. I really think that about 100 out of the 470+ pages could have been edited out. The plot was just so obvious, I started skimming whole scenes, just to finish the darn thing. Regardless, if you are looking for a hot romance, Shannon McKenna is hard to beat (well maybe by Lori Foster), you may just have to suffer through a lame suspense plot to enjoy the romance though.

5 out of 5 stars Steamy and suspensful.........2006-06-12

I have just started reading Shannon Mckenna books and has become my all time favourite author! The way Shannon Mckenna writes is gritty, real and hot...I absolutley love her style.
The book has a great plot which does not take over the romance as many books do; when I pick up a romance book I want to read about romance! You get to know both the character well and can feel the suspense in the book.
I would recommend that you read the first book first "Behind Close Doors" and then this book followed by Out of Control. If you like Lori Foster's writing then you will like these books.

1 out of 5 stars Over use of profanity.......2006-06-05

The story line was very well written, however I cannot get past the over use of profanity in Ms. McKenna's writing. Her characters use the Lord's name in vain as if it is the catch phrase of the year. I was so taken aback by the use, I wrote Ms. McKenna concerning this unfortunate choice of expression and she said she was sorry, but would continue the use because the characters in her books are alive in her head. If her characters are so insolent....what does that say about her?

1 out of 5 stars A Perfect Waste of Time.......2006-05-06

What a dumb, empty novel. Neither of the principle characters, Connor McCloud and Erin Riggs, has a single personality trait that's attractive. McCloud is tortured to the point of psychosis, filled with self-pity and uncontrolled lusts. Erin, the object of his obsession, is a compulsive snot who plays on his emotions like a mandolin, is at one moment a totally dedicated business-woman and at the next a sexual wanton. What she sees as attractive in him is merely physical, and creepy physical at that. Otherwise, he's rude, coarse, ill-mannered, and slightly crazy. He wants to dominate her and she wants to manipulate him. You wouldn't want to go to lunch with either of them, even if they were buying.

5 out of 5 stars A book crammed with helpful guidance.......2002-02-22

Wonderful book!!! I collect watercolors and have one of Skip's. His is clearly my favorite of all of my many watercolors, aside from one by my son. I was especially excited to find and to read Skip's book. What a great teacher he is! The book is clear and easy to follow and apply. Incidentally, I have it as one of my coffee-table books, and find myself regularly re-thumbing through it. Many of its illustrations are very pleasing to the eye, and capture the essence of points he makes so well in the text. Oh, to have just a small fraction of his watercolor talent!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, essential!.......2001-08-28

Whether you're a painter who has worked for years, or a 'newbie' you will appreciate and be inspired by Skip Lawrence's fresh and candid approach to more powerful painting via the tools of light and shadow. This is not a 'paint-like-I-do" guide, it's an intelligent conversation with examples of his and other terrific artists, to show how color and light and design all work together to create compelling and meaningful art that truly expresses your vision as an artist. This is a most essential and useful addition to any painter's resources, and it's valuable for both watercolorists and painters of other media as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......1999-10-12

This book is much different than the usual technique books because it clearly stays with one goal - light. Everything in the book is organised around achieving the perception of light and shadow in your paintings. It is a wonderfully elegant and logical approach.
