The series continued with a sequel better than the first.......2007-07-11
Everything about the first book that made my son and I love it so much returns in this sequel.
The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, and help to craft a definite image of the world unfolding to your eyes through the lushly detailed text.
My absoulte favorite part of this book, the thing that matters most to me, are the characters. The cast of characters in Robert's writing are always amazing, and they grow even more in this book.
The plot is epic and entertaining, but doesnt try to be more deep than it is, and makes for great reading.
Both my son and I blazed through it, eagerly anticipating the next adventure awaiting us.
For a great fantasy series you can't do better than the Ruin Mist books by Robert Stanek.
The first one was great, this one is even better.......2007-07-10
One of the best things about the Ruin Mist series is that they keep gettin better and better, leading to some astounding conclusions (Kingdom's IV and Dragons IV).
The continuation of the previous book, this epic tale combines great characters, intruiging plot, and lush details and narrations- perfect ingredients for a great book. And a great book it is. Be sure to read all four of the kingdom's books, and the sequel series In the Service of Dragons.
A Wonderful Continuation To The Series!.......2007-04-22
I just couldn't put the darn book down! Like the first one, the story took hold of me from the first page and wouldnt let go until the final word. I found myself wondering what would happen next to the characters when I had to put the book down for any length of time. Thus I finished the book in only two days. Stanek is fast on his way to becoming one of the best Fantasy writers, on a par with Narnia and Harry Potter. Better than Eragon/Eldest. Those who love fast paced Fantasy novels will definitly not be dissapointed!
Beautifully written and illustrated.......2007-03-31
Robert Stanek's The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches has become a fantasy favorite and reading the four books in the series is like entering a fascinating new world of adventure where you never know what will be around the next corner. Robert's writing style has been called a wonderful cross between J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling and the books have been called the Star Wars of fantasy. To me, what this means is that the writing style is full of adventure, humor, and action, and the books have complexity and depth. Many people I've introduced to the amazing world of Ruin Mist have told me what they loved best about the books are the characters and the unique world, the fact each book in the series is better than the one before it, and that the second reading of the series is even better than the first.
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches (Keeper Martin's Tales Series, Book 1) - is where the story begins. Reading this story, you learn about the many wonders of the kingdoms of men and the reaches of the elves.
The Kingdoms & the Elves of the Reaches II (Keeper Martin's Tales, Book 2) - continues the story right where the first leaves off and brings the first story arc to its dramatic, edge-of-the-seat conclusion.
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches Book 3 (Keeper Martin's Tales, Book 3) - is where the story really takes flight and you are propelled into all the wonders Ruin Mist has to offer. This is where you first meet dragons, troants, and other creatures beyond the shapeshifting wolm and their evil queen.
The Kingdoms & The Elves of the Reaches IV (Keeper Martin's Tales, Book 4) (Keeper Martin's Tales (Paperback)) - is where prophecies become reality. You get to walk in the underworld and the dragon tower, join Valam in the trios, and journey to the corners of the lands.
If you are just starting the series, you should read book one first. The Kingdoms & the Elves of the Reaches has several excellent editions.
The Kingdoms & the Elves of the Reaches (Keeper Martin's Tales, Book 1)
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches (Keeper Martin's Tales, Book 1, Special Illustrated Edition)
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches II (Signature Illustrated Edition, Keeper Martin's Tales Book 1) (Keeper Martin's Tales)
The Kingdoms & the Elves of the Reaches II also has several excellent editions.
The Kingdoms & the Elves of the Reaches II (Keeper Martin's Tales, Book 2)
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches II (Keeper Martin's Tales, Book 2, Special Illustrated Edition)
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches II (Signature Illustrated Edition, Keeper Martin's Tales Book 2) (Keeper Martin's Tales)
Over all, I would personally rate this series above Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, and the like. The stories certainly approach the greatness of Tolkien in any event. I have purchased the original edition and the special illustrated edition. The many illustrations throughout the book editions are excellent. However, like the special illustrated edition of the first book, the special illustrated edition of this second book has an amazing cover with a full-size color illustration on the front and three color illustrations on the back! Since the book is 8 1/2 x 11 in size, the back cover illustrations are as large as cover illustrations on most paperbacks. The illustrated guide to the world at the end of the book is excellent too.
Don't miss this series... Worst case, hard-core Potter fans will like it much better than Artemis Fowl but not as much as Harry Potter. To me though, it is better than Harry Potter because it has more adventure and magic, plus I liked the characters better. In Harry Potter, I have one favorite character and a few characters I like okay to read about. In the Kingdoms books, I have five favorites (Xith, Vilmos, Emel, Adrina, Seth) and many other characters I love to read about (Erravane, Galan, Brodst, Myrial, Midori, Martin, Jacob, Cagan, Jarom, Sathar, Edward).
Excellent.......2007-03-01
I'm a fan of Harry Potter who just discovered this series, and I'm glad to have something to fill the "void" until the final Potter book comes out. Looking forward to continuing the saga with the third book.

Recommended reading--oh yeah!!!.......2007-04-28
I started reading The Kingdoms books since me brothers were reading them too. Adrina and Vilmos are my favorites. In my mind I see Adrina and Vilmos growing up like I imagined and they are very good friends to have on rainy days. I like these books but than all the Harry Potter books put together times 100. I like this one best as it is the one where Vilmos meets Edward the troant and its got the Dragon King!!! I love everything about the king's mate game and how edward is half troll and half giatn.
The Best Book!.......2007-02-16
This book was amazing. I was so involede in it that when I went to school all I could think of was Vilmos, Emel, Seth and Adrina. When I went to sleep I had dreams about them. This book is far better than Harry Potter , a real page turner. I reccomend this book to all.
Excellent series.......2007-01-15
It was a great book. It is perfect for Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings fans. It is very realistic and emmotional. Robert Stanek is a wonderful author who can write exactly what a reader likes. What I like so much about his writing is that he isn't overly descriptive, but he describes the scenery enough for the reader to envision what's before them, as well as use their own imagination. Because of this, the story is able to unfold at a much more fluid rate, and that's what makes this an instant hook. I can't wait to read the next book.
# 1 Page Turner.......2006-12-10
THIS BOOK WAS AWESOME!!! This book was pure genuis, a mix of all different books combined. There was magic like in Harry Potter, awesome battle parts like in the Lord of The Rings, and fantasy creatures like in Narnia.
The Best!!!.......2006-10-09
Adrina, Vilmos, Emel, and Seth have more adventures!!! As Adrina and Emel go back to Imtal, they soon find themselves in even more danger as they try to help the elves who have become their friends. Vilmos and Xith continue their travels and journey to many wondrous places like the Mouth of the World and the Free City of Solntse. It is magical and wonderful, and you can never quite guess what will happen next. Try this book!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Keeper Martin's Tale is a fantastic epic adventure story. Every fan of fantasy and adventure should read this at least once........2007-06-18
Keeper Martin's Tale, Robert Stanek's elegant entry into the world of fantasy, lays the groundwork for what promises to be a mesmerizing four-book series--the Ruin Mist Chronicles. Stanek spins his tale in a meticulously crafted fantasy realm on the brink of apocalyptic change. The Dark Lord Sathar has returned from the dark beyond. Dark agents and evil doers are afoot in the land, stirring war and edging an ancient prophecy closer to fulfillment. In destiny's path are a village boy, a headstrong princess, a mysterious shaman, an elven priest and the embattled (from within and without) Great Kingdom. Stanek masterfully intertwines intrigue and mystery with the personal quests of the protagonists who seek to unravel the secret of the apocalyptic changes before all is lost.
Although the main themes may emerge slowly, patient readers will find the rewards enormously worthwhile, especially as everything becomes clear in subsequent books. This is not quite the land of Faerie, although there is considerable backstory and mythology to the peoples and lands. Stanek brings his expertise as a military educated man to the intrigue, sword play and warfare.
Stanek mixes cultures, religions, institutions and languages with exceptional skill. This is excellent world building, applied with a dark, powerful touch that should convince fans of Berg, Brooks, Eddings, Feist, and others to become Stanek fans, too. To get the optimal experience, I recommend: Keeper Martin's Tale (Ruin Mist Chronicles, Book 1, Special Illustrated Edition) (Ruin Mist Chronicles).
Simply Stunning - no other word for it........2007-05-25
I get it that fans of other authors might not like a book that is such a strong competitor to their own faves. But this book is simply stunning. There's no other word for it. As a LotR, aSoIaF, and Potter reader, I found this to be an exquisite read. Robert Stanek has envisioned a world of many paths and many destinies -- and it is a magnificent world.
I love stories you can lose yourself in, and this is one. I love stories you that make you want to cheer for the good guys and jeer at the bad guys. Excellent story, with protagonists you can care about deeply and antagonists you can hate just as deeply. If you are considering this book, I recommend the Special Edition. I don't see how you could go wrong with that editoin of this book. I love it, and am working my way through the series now.
Inventive and original.......2007-05-22
Keeper Martin's Tale
by Robert Stanek
ISBN 157545047X
Taken as a whole this series clearly is exceptional. Well written and well imagined. Robert Stanek is wonderfully inventive, and exercises remarkable control over prose that is neither too dense nor too sparse. Taken separately, this book, Keeper Martin's Tale, is outstanding on many levels, with many moments of sheer brilliance.
The books are printed as high quality trade paperback editions. The interior text is crisp and the paper is a beautiful white. If there are any typos or such I haven't noticed them, though I have read the books start to finish multiple times now.
I first read Keeper Martin's Tale in 2005. I was enchanted absolutely by the rich world setting, the strong characters, and the sound pacing. It is a rare gift for an author to be able to create believable characters of both sexes, and Robert Stanek does so masterfully. The book reads at times like a thriller, pulling the reader from scene to scene. The book has mysteries with clues to unravel, plenty of action, and intense drama.
Robert Stanek turns the traditional path of the fantasy epic on its ear. Many fantasy epics begin with the characters adventures and lead to a great conflict on the final pages of the final book. Robert Stanek gives us a war in the first book and its aftermath in the subsequent books.
Stanek gives standard fantasy fare inventive twists to make them feel fresh and real. Sure the books have men and elves and dwarves and gnomes. But here are titans, giants, dragons, goblins, trolls, and demons too. There are fantastic creatures from shapeshifters to dark elves and beyond. In the books, men and elves are enemies. Gnomes are a line a dwarves who have magical powers. Titans and dragons were the rulers of old. There are many unique ideas on the periphery, magic is evil and its use is prohibited. Books are banned in many places except for nobles, village elders and the like.
Each book is about 400 pages. With four books in the completed series, this gives the reader nearly 1600 pages to immerse themselves in one of the most fantastic world settings I've come across in all my reading.
Comparing this book to other fantasies is an unfair mixing of apples and oranges. The Harry Potter books are nothing like the Song of Ice and Fire books. The Chronicles of Narnia are nothing like A Series of Unfortunate Events. Yet as an avid reader I've happily read all these series along with the Ruin Mist Chronicles. The Ruin Mist Chronicles stands on its own merits, and it is wrong for overzealous fans of one particular author or another to give this book low ratings just because it isn't like XYZ.
I was captivated by this series and wrote the publisher to be one of the first to get the Special Illustrated Edition, which was published March 2007. The book in this edition is without doubt incredible and beautifully packaged. On the Robert Stanek fan boards I learned this book has lost scenes and chapters restored and is the complete book as the author originally envisioned.
The special edition includes bonus extras at the end. A 25-page guide to the world. A 15-page guide to King's Mate, the game played by the characters. A 8-page history of the world and the author. I was impressed to learn the author is a former military man who earn an astonishing 29 career medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, in 11 years of military service. I was also impressed to learn he is former linguist who studied at the prestigious Defense Language Institute.
I have since learned the languages spoken in the books are based on actual languages spoken in our world today and studied by the author during his tenure as a linguist, including Germanic, Slavic, Far Eastern (Korean, Japanese, Chinese) and Native American Indian. The names used in the books all have origins in these languages as well.
Highly recommended.
A Well-written story, sure to inspire generations to come.......2007-05-14
Shame on the liars who have flooded this truly remarkable book with poor reviews. You have only to read a few passages of this book to see how remarkable it is.
The prose is as strong as any book I've read, and the story is truly remarkable. Robert Stanek has written a worthy fantasy, in a class on par with some of the best in any genre. I liked this book more than Harry Potter. I found it more accessible than Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and personally, I liked it more anything else I've read this year.
Great writing like this speaks for itself. George RR Martin fans need to go find a new whipping post--your anti-Robert Stanek antics are unfair and unwarranted. This book and its author deserve the many accolades.
There is nothing wrong with this BIG family-friendly fantasy epic. Fantasy does not need graphic violence and/or sex to be good. A good story is good on its own merits. I've never seen anyone knock Harry Potter or any other book because it is written in a family-friendly style.
This book deserves to be read by readers the world over. Bravo, Robert! You've created an exciting new fantasy world, and I can't wait to read the next installment.
A note on editions: I found several editions of this book. The 2005 deluxe edition was very well done, but the edition I decided on was the 2007 Special Illustrated Edition. This edition of the book is unquestionably an achievement for the genre. The full-color cover shows The Battle of Quashan'. The back cover has 3 separate full color illustrations. The inside of the book is chock full of illustrations.
A note on series: The reading order is #1 Keeper Martin's Tale, #2 Kingdom Alliance, #3 Fields of Honor, #4 Mark of the Dragon.
do not trust all these positive "reviews".......2007-05-09
This self published book is painful to read due to a cliché plot, stiff dialogue and hundreds of grammatical errors. Obviously no editor was hired here. This is not the next Tolkien, C.S. Lewis or Harry Potter like many of the bogus reviews claim. And no film is being made of this book as some of the gushing, more hilarious reviews below claim.
You can open this book at any page and find multiple examples of bad writing that will make wince, run away and take a shower. Here is a random passage to read at your own risk:
"Not quite what she wanted to tell him, she was slow to call out him. `Emel, Emel!' she yelled. She wanted to tell him that it wasn't his fault. She wanted to tell him what she felt for him in her heart. She wanted to tell him that she would miss him. Yet as he turned to look at her, she found her tongue growing limp."
Also - a warning to those thinking about buying multiple Robert Stanek books (although I would advise anyone not to buy any book by him) -- this book is repeated word for word in book in the first two books of his "other" series "The Kingdoms and Elves of the Reaches." It is just a repackaging of this series with different covers and titles. And if you read the negative reviews of his "Elf Queen" series you'll find similar criticism (a few new chapters but then whole chapters lifted from this book). However, there is no information about this on their Amazon products pages to inform the consumers. I suspect it was done just to make the author appear to be more prolific than he really is or trick people into buying more of his books.
Stay far away from this.

First time in hardcover! Best-selling author Robert Stanek delivers a story that is perfect for the young and the young at heart! The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches is a refreshingly unique fantastic adventure where its only limits are the limits of your imagination. Inside you'll discover the breathtaking world of Ruin Mist where the mystical and the magical abound. To heal the lands and restore the light, the great kings decreed that magic and all that is magical shall be cleansed to dust. The cleansing raged for so long that few could recall a time without it and it is in this time that the Dark Lord Sathar returned from the dark beyond. The one hope of the peoples of Ruin Mist was Queen Mother, the elf queen of old. She saw a way out of everlasting darkness, a path that required the union of the divided peoples.

Superb...Wonder-filled!.......2007-10-04
This is the first in a wonderful series of books that seem destined to become a classic. The Kingdoms are a magical place and a fantastic destination. There are no lovelier fantasy books for readers of all ages than the Kingdoms books. The best part about this book, other than the lovely story, beautiful imagery, and wonderful characters, is that its only the beginning of a grander tale. Adventure awaits! Happy reading!
I got to give it 5 of 5.......2007-09-29
Kids, adults. The Kingdoms & the Elves are great. I love the books and how they are presented. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. I have read this series 6 times! I know that isn't near as many as others, but it is a lot for me. This series of books are incredible to read, keep you locked in to the end of the last book, and make you want to reread them.
I find Stanek's characters lovable and relateable. There is a character for every reader to identify with in some way. He brings readers on a journey with Adrina, Seth & Vilmos, and what a journey it is. This is a great time to start reading (if you haven't already). This series is great literature, and is compulsively page turningly entertaining. I give them my highest recommendation.
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches are the real deal. This set is fantastic.......2007-09-16
I am totally pleased with this set of books. They are great and get better in the last books. If you're one of the few people who has not yet read this amazing series - or if you're on the fence about getting it for a child - DON'T HESITATE. This isn't half baked or over the top stuff.
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches is a phenomenon because Robert Stanek is an incredible writer. He brilliantly crafts a vivid alternate universe where magical creatures and magic are real. The plots of each book are a brilliant balance of coming of age stories, friendship, danger, and epic good against evil.
There are parallels to the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia. Stanek has a special affinity for action. With the exception of the first each of the books races and soars until a rip roaring conclusion.
What more can I say about The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and the fascinating world? It is absolutely amazing as you become engrossed into each book, each chapter, each page, each word. The books have helped me rediscover reading for the last few years. I read all 4 books in 2 weeks. I started the In the Service of Dragons on a Friday and finished all four by Monday afternoon! I recommend all of these books to children, teenagers, and adults alike. There are those out there that are hesitant about the books. I was a skeptic. I had heard great things about the books, but never considered them. Then one day I took a leap of faith and began reading and I've never looked back. Thank you Robert Stanek and I love The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and the world you created!
amateurish writing and an uninspired plot.......2007-08-27
This book is totally non-noteworthy. I normally wouldn't even bother to waste time writing a review about it, since it is just a self published book pretending to be greater than it is.
This book is not a "modern day fantasy classic". It is not "better than Harry Potter" or "Star Wars with elves". Robert Stanek is not "America's Tolkien". Where did all this over-the-top hype come from? One can only guess.
This book is a stale piece of prose. A short boring episode of what threatens to be some endless drawn out cliché (there are books 2, 3, 4 and then a "sequel series" (?) that goes on and on). This book is so unimaginative that there is even a "dark lord" and a "middle earth" thrown into the mix.
However, this book does have some unintentional funny bits. I had to laugh when I was told that "middle earth" was a realm between lower and upper earth. And the author clearly is confused about the meaning of many words, such as when a frightened princess speaks COYLY to a supernatural apparition.
Great story line.......2007-08-17
i just finished this book and plan to read the rest of the series. N ot on a par with "Potter" or "Lord of the Rings" or "Aslan", but a very engaging story with good characters...
Book Description
Here is the fourth volume in Robert Stanek's magnificent Keeper Martin's Tales -- the series fans have called "The Star Wars" of fantasy. Filled with mystery, intrigue, adventure, and magic the books transport us to a world unlike any other. Praised as an "instant" classic, Robert Stanek's outstanding series has quickly become a favorite. The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches IV To turn back the tides of war, Queen Mother sent her most trusted warriors on a perilous journey across the Great Sea. But the elves were betrayed by one of their own. Only a handful survived the ambush that followed, only two reached the far shores. But they did not find quick allies. They found a kingdom under siege and a shattered alliance. The elves proved themselves to the men that defended Quashan'. They along with the mysterious Xith, the would-be mage Vilmos, Princess Adrina and their friends helped turn the battle in Great Kingdom's favor. For their support, the elves were granted an audience with the king. Yet great deeds could not undo the past, or change the prejudice of men. Elves and men are enemies, as it has been through time. The Alder King had his own concerns. The kingdom alliance was shattered. An ally, and a great king was dead. War between the kingdoms seemed inevitable. If there was any hope of restoring the alliance, he must rid the kingdom of the enemy's spies. But was such a thing possible without the backing of those he needed the most?

Magical ---- Literally! And this fourth book is a real treat!.......2007-06-06
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches IV
ISBN: 15754550658
Magical ---- Literally!
I became intrigued by the phenomena of Ruin Mist awhile back, and this review is a long time readers perspective. In many respects, I'm probably the last person who would enjoy this book. I'm a cynic by nature, and my reading habits lean more toward more mature series and more literary works. Or at least I should say it used to before I discovered this wonderful series and learned how fun fun reads like this one could be.
As someone who grew up reading C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, I had a soft spot for a good fantasy tale when I was younger, and tended to read fantasy from time to time. This series however, has made a new fantasy lover out of me. Why?
Robert Stanek has created a delightful world of magic and mystery, with a compelling cast of characters you'll come to love (or hate) almost instantly. He captures the imagination with spare prose that draws his readers in. The concept of a elves and such isn't exactly new, but the ideas of parallel worlds of magic, alternating histories, elves and men as enemies, magic as evil, and more were breathes of fresh air.
There are times early in the series when it is obvious that this is the author's first major work of fiction. His other previous work (as an international bestselling nonfiction author) however, helps him writes tight prose, a balanced amount of detail with a story well-paced and well-plotted.
Overall, this is a very impressive series. Each character in the story as unique and real as their intertwining storylines. Plus, I like to think that some of the wonder and enjoyment I felt reading the pages of the early books came from the sense that the author was also experiencing this world and its characters for the first time while writing them.
The world of Ruin Mist has multiple levels of reality called UnderEarth, MiddleEarth, and OverEarth. UnderEarth is a place without sun, moon or stars. It has bloodred skies and is a dark place where many strange creatures dwell. MiddleEarth is the place of the kingdoms and reaches. It is where men and elves live. OverEarth is place of the skies. It exists above the clouds of the kingdoms and reaches.
The three main storylines provide glimpses into different parts of the world. Vilmos Tabborrath is an unassuming village boy who doesn't want to follow his father's path. He has a dark gift of magic and as magic is considered evil this puts him and his family in grave danger. He tries to hide his gift but one day it slips out when he is surprised by a bear and this is the beginning of the end of his life as a simple village boy.
Vilmos is intriguing becuase he is different from his peer group and mistreated by those around him. He recounts a story of getting beat up by an older boy and the harsh treatment by his father. Children often feel isolated and mistreated, as do adults, therefore most people can relate to this situation.
Adrina Alder is the youngest child of a king. She remains heartbroken over the death of her mother some years ago and longs for change. Her wish for change comes with dark visitors in the night but is not in any way what she hoped it would be.
Adrina is intriguing because she is someon just about anyone can identify with. She feels sad and alone in the world. She's bitter about not being able to do what she wants and longs for adventure. Children often feel sad and lonely, as do adults, therefore most people can relate to this situation too.
Brother Seth of the Red is an elven warrior and sworn queen's protector. He is old in human terms yet at the same time childlike in his ways as he is young for an elf. He doesn't understand what is happening or why he was chosen by Queen Elf to undertake a dangerous journey. His journey takes him to the land of men at a time when men and elves are the bitterest of enemies.
Seth is intruiging because he is so powerful yet so flawed. He is a trained fighting machine. It is all he's known and it is why he knows so little of anything else. He also has the urges of adolescence and finds his first love though he doesn't understand his feelings as he's been isolated from ordinary elves and the lives they live.
Other aspects of the writing itself are:
* The books are unique and readable.
* He takes time to set up the characters, plot, and scenes. He takes care in introducing Vilmos, Seth, and Adrina because of their hardships we know why they act the way they do when they leave their homes.
* He does not talk down to his audience of young adults.
* The same story elements that appeal to a child, appeal to an adult.
* His characters grow, change, and make decisions based on their own motives.
* Life is not simple. People get sick, people die.
* Good and evil exist, as they do in reality, and they have many guises.
* It is easy to read. The text flows naturally, even with strange words and unusual names.
* His creativity and descriptions bring life to the story. He creates mystery and keeps you wanting to know more.
For me, the real test of a book's strength is whether or not I want to read it again. Most books get read once and traded in. I've already read this series three times and have upgraded to the special editions as they've been published. And the best part is that the series gets progressively better with each new volume. As good as book 1 is, book 2 is even better, so if book 3, and book 4 is a real treat.
Younger readers certainly don't need me to point out something they already know, but hopefully this review will help persuade some like me who still cling to the notion that a children's book can't possibly be enjoyable to us adults. Stanek created a marvelous story that has captured readers from all age groups. His writing has been compared to JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling and CS Lewis. He deserves all the success he's achieved. I can't wait to see what he writes next.

Simply amazing.......2007-02-21
I loved this book!! I could really imagine what was going on! It was full of adventure and magic!
This would rank up there as one of the best books I have read. I would say that Stanek ranks up there with some of the best authors including: Jk Rowling, Jrr Tolkien, RA Salvatore, and Brian Jacques just to name a few of my favorites.
If you like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, you will LOVE this book! A 5 star winner!
Love it!!.......2007-02-10
This was a great book! It made me feel like I was experiencing the adventure. I liked the excitement and action. I was hooked on this book from the start. I can hardly wait for it to be made into a movie!
Love it!!!.......2006-11-10
This is the best book I have ever before read, everything you would want in a book is right here it is so good at painting a mental picture in your head it will have you yelling out loud throughout this entire book if I could give it more than 5 stars I would I say INFINITE STARS FOR THE KINGDOMS!!!!
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-17
When I started THE KINGDOMS #4, I couldn't put it down! It was so exciting! Full of suspense. A must read for anyone who loves fantasy. After finishing this set I look forward to more of his work and can't wait to start Service of the Dragons.

Don't miss any book in this series.......2007-10-05
I've been a mother for 16 years and I've never had all of my children read and fight over the same book before. But then my husband started reading the first book at the same time as my 12-year old who didn't want anyone else to read it while he was reading it. My 12-year old started hiding it under his pillow but his brother found it and was sneaking reads too. All three fought over who got to read when all the way to the end of the fourth book.
The Titans and Dragons emerge from the shadows!.......2007-09-29
In the Service of Dragons is the first book of the Dragon series. The book picks up after the historic decision of King Andrew to support the elves and begins to tell the story of how the men of the kingdoms work to save the elves of the reaches. It is in this book that you get a better sense of the fantastic world Robert Stanek has created and all the wonders it contains. This book is pure excitement from the opening to the end, and I enjoyed every moment of it.
If you have been resisting the Kingdoms and Dragons books because they sound like a Tolkien wannabe, don't-read it now. Although the parallels are obvious--a world of elves, men and fantastic creates--the author is not out to mimic Tolkien but to offer a vastly different vision of what a magical world would be like. In Tolkien's world, the alliances between peoples is what saves the day, in Stanek's world, the alliances of old have shattered, men and elves were more often foes than friends, and the world was once ruled by dragons and titans.
For all its darkness, author Robert Stanek has crafted an extremely well-paced and exciting book. From the first page on, you won't be able to put it down until you find out what is happening and whether Xith will be able successful in his attempt to save Vilmos from himself.
As this is the first volume of the quartet, surely there is more excitement to come.
no details and no plot.......2007-09-19
The writing style in this book is so sparse that every page is a struggle to visualize what is going on. There are no vivid character descriptions and details of important places are often just noted by colors such as the "grey castle" or a "red mountain". Also very frustrating is the lack of plot. I mistakenly ordered this thinking it was a part of a stand alone series - but there are 4 books before this one (the kingdom and elves series). You would think that surely something must be going on at this point, but nothing seems to be happening. Most of the book consists of boring dialog from characters who all sound alike. The lack of imagination with the titles of the sequels (In Service of Dragons Book 2, In Service of Dragons Book 3, etc.) gives a strong hint on how dull this book is.
Harry Potter eat your heart out!.......2007-05-25
It's not Harry Potter and it's not meant to be. Robert Stanek has created a marvelous story that has captured readers from all age groups. His writing has been compared to JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling and CS Lewis. He deserves all the success he's achieved. I've read all 4 Kingdoms books and couldn't wait to start the Dragon books.
You have only to read the first few scenes of this book to get a sense of the sweeping majestic scope of these stories. The author captivates the imagination with prose that draws his readers in like few others can. While the stories have some standard fantasy elements, the author uses them in fresh, innovative ways, and also introduces much that is new.
For me, the many characters are some of the best aspects of the story. In this one, I enjoyed getting to know some of the other characters better, especially the young prince. The world ofthe story seems a character. The world has multiple levels of reality called UnderEarth, MiddleEarth, and OverEarth.
This is most definitely a great read. Read the sample and see for yourself.

Read the sample judge for yourself.......2007-05-14
There is no doubt Robert Stanek is an excellent writer on par with some of the best in any genre. That is unquestionable - all you have to do is read the samples provided to see this. He has a strong voice, and a unique style. Read the sample judge for yourself.
As I read the opening scenes, I was drawn immediately into a bold new fantasy world of titans, giants, and men. I knew immediately this book was for me and could see why Tolkien and Rowling fans enjoy this author's writing. The author has a strong command of language. He paints scenes with a master's stroke and his books have many strong characters.

Very good book.......2006-12-25
This is a great book. I read all kinds of books and this one is very near the top. I would venture as far as to compare Robert Stanek to J.R.R. Tolkien.
Terrific sequel!!.......2006-11-05
In the Service of Dragons contains some of the most powerful scenes I've ever read, especially the sweeping, epic scenes. It swept me away, and this second book was no less powerful in its imagery. The author doesn't let you miss a moment of the action, and it only gets more intense as the story goes along.
The mighty titans and great eagles have returned from the ancient past and contineu to work to stop the darkness. Noman, the mysterious keeper of the City of the Sky, has seen the signs and he is gathering those who can stop the darkness. Meanwhile the Great Kingdom is in turmoil with the heir to the throne gone across the sea to battle a distant enemy when another enemy has returned closer to home.
I bought this book and then read it in print it is so great! The time starts flying, flying right from the start. If you like scifi/fantasy like I do you will love this book too. The best book for any Eragon, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings fan to read!! It's not Tolkien, but it is very good!!

This is a really good book READ IT!!!!!!.......2006-10-17
This book tells the story of the men of the kingdoms and elves of the reaches. It is the story of Vilmos who has a secret gift of magic, Adrina a princess from a dying land, and Seth a great warrior who is trying to save his people and the world. In this story, Prince Valam Alder has traveled to the lands of the elves to try to stop a war, but meanwhile war starts in his own lands, and everyone he cares about is caught in the middle. This book combines combat, suspense, magic, hidden love and more into an adventure-filled and exciting book.
WOW!!!.......2006-08-16
This is a terrific book. More along the lines of 'LORD of the Rings' than Harry Potter. Great characters from heroes like Prince Valam Alder and his men to the young wizard Vilmos to the mysterious Xith and the lovely Adrina and her sisters plus the dragon Tnavres. Great writing, terrific adventure, a MUST READ for any fastasy fan.
Read it!!!.......2006-06-11
This book in my eyes is so much more captivating then the LOTR trilogy. In the LOTR trilogy there were points where I had to put the book down, so far, in the "kingdoms and elves" and "service of dragons", I havent found a point where i wanted to. The author gave the reader a world to sink into, and characters with real personalities. Overall one of the better fantasy books I have read.

I couldn't put it down. What a great book. The plot will hold your attention, the characters are vivid and the action is compelling. In it's entirety, a very enjoyable book. I highly reccommend it and it's sequel.
This book is beyond fantastic... please read it!!!!!.......2006-10-17
The ends comes for the men of the kingdoms and the elves of the reaches. The wars they've all been trying to prevent have started, and there doesn't seem to be any hope left, but Prince Valam Alder, and his family are not about to give up. They are going to fight to the end, meanwhile Xith and Noman continue to build the mysterious company they believe can save everyone, and Adrina has a secret key she's told no one about. The dragon is with her and he's trying to hook his claws deeper. It is a great book you should buy it!!!!
Awesome!.......2006-08-19
I loved this book even more than the first two!! I could really imagine what was going on! It was full of adventure and magic and action! If you like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, you will LOVE this book! A 5 star winner!
A thrilling novel.......2006-06-11
The "service of dragons" are by far some of the best books I've ever read, and that's saying something. I'm currently re-reading the set for the second time and am enjoying it just like the first time. It is a MUST read for anybody who like dragons, magic, adventure and climatic endings. It keeps you hooked from the begenning to the end!!! i would give this book a million stars!! Praise to Robert Stanek, he's a master!!

The best book in the WORLD!.......2006-12-09
If you are ever bored, pick up this series, and start reading. Usually when I read books, I read in short segments. But when I picked up the first one, it was different. When I started, I couldn't stop until the end of the fourth one! It is action packed, and has so many adventures. Plus, it is suspenseful! I highly recomend this to EVERYONE!
I love In the Service of DRAGONS!.......2006-10-19
This book was amazing. I started reading this series because the kid across the street was already reading it. So then I picked up the first one and kept going and going It's like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars all rolled into one. It's really entertaining and I couldn't stop reading. I read all 4 in 2 weeks. I'd recommend this for anyone who likes fiction.
BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN.......2006-10-17
All 4 dragon books are filled with mystery, suspense, adventure and action, but this is by far my favorite. I've read the Kingdoms and Dragons books about 10 times each (I'm not exagerating). These books are better than Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings combined. I liked this more than Eragon and Eldest. I love all the battles and action but nothing prepared me for this one, HOLY CRP!!!! I was glued to the book the first time I read it and totally blown away!!! This book is amazing and everyone who I've talked to says its great too! Read it you won't be disappointed.
This WAS GRREEAATT!!!!!.......2006-08-19
This Book was Great AND the best of the series. I never read anything like it. On my favorite books list this ones on the top #1. If you love adventure and you've already read Potter and Lord of the Rings, give this book a try.
Totally amazing.......2006-07-07
