Book Description

Former Chicago lawyer Ben Holiday was proud and happy. And why not? The Magic Kingdom of Landover, which he ruled as High Lord, was finally at peace, and he and his wife, the sylph Willow, could watch their daughter Mistaya grow.
And grow she did--shooting through infancy in months, learning to walk and to swim in the same week. Mistaya had been born a seedling, nourished by soils from Landover, Earth, and the fairy mists, come into being in the dank, misty deadness of the Deep Fell. With dazzling green eyes that cut to the soul, she was as lovely as her mother, and Ben wanted nothing more than to enjoy his daughter's childhood and his peaceful kingdom forever. But his idyll was interrupted when Rydall, a king of lands beyond the fairy mist, assembled armies on Landover's border and threatened to invade unless Ben was able to defeat Rydall's seven champions.
Some counseled the High Lord to refuse Rydall's challenge, but Holiday could not, for Mistaya had been snatched from her guardians by foul magic. And Rydall held the key to her fate...

Still good, but Terry Brooks starts being repetitive - you can figure out the plot in the first half

4 out of 5 stars Landover' Great.......2006-03-25

Ben Holiday continues to struggle with the Kingdom of Landover, always seems something's going on which requires his attention. Very well done and may be the best of the series to date. Good fantasy and a an easy, enjoyable read.

If you like books like this one, might I suggest another I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Lighthearted fantasy in keeping with Landover mystique.......2004-11-23

I was a big fan of Terry Brooks' Kingdom of Landover series when the original books came out. Because I was a member of the Science Fiction Book Club, receiving regular mailings, I always saw when the next one came out and made sure I would get it right away. At some point, however, either my subscription ended or I got the series before the final book, Witches' Brew came out in 1995.

I've never read Brooks' critically acclaimed and bestselling Shannara Series, though I did come across his The Word and the Void trilogy and was fascinated by those, but they ended a few years ago. It wasn't until I decided to sell my Sci-Fi Book Club edition of The Tangle Box on eBay that I discovered there was a fifth and final book to the Landover series.

The book was fantastic, to say the least, a very lighthearted fantasy in keeping with the earlier books. I was pleased and enchanted by the book, and it didn't take long for me to remember bits and pieces of the earlier novels as I went along.

The story was entertaining as well, as a stranger calling himself King Rydell of Marnhull comes to challenge Ben Holiday, King of Landover. Ben and his sylph wife, Willow, decide to send their magical daughter, Mistaya, away because of the danger, but the girl is abducted along the way.

Not much heavy reading here, but very much a story to enchant kids of all ages. I would be most grateful if Brooks were to follow it up, but maybe I'll just have to start reading the numerous books of the Shannara series.

4 out of 5 stars The second best Landover novel yet.......2002-01-18

Book 5 was especially creative and kept me interested; much better than the long-winded #4 in this series. Almost as good as the original Magic Kingdom for Sale! Holiday's daughter is an intriguing character and I liked following some of the story through her eyes. What now, Terry??

4 out of 5 stars actually it is 4.5.......2000-07-13

This one is almost as good as "The Tangle Box," if you can believe it. Nightshade's hatred seems a bit over the top, but I guess that is her character. Again, Ben is confounded by things he can't understand and he doesn't really know what to do, even though it is clear to the reader what is going on, down to Nightshade's sidekick. But the plot is well developed and the mud puppy bit is a great addition! Poor Abernathy. Enough said. Read this one. You really must.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book for Collectors of Witchlore!.......2001-07-31

The latest trip to New Orleans ended up with an assortment of pralines, hoodoo books, rosaries, and this wonderful little book of Good Spells for Healing by Brenda Knight aka Witch Bree. Knight is a poet and medieval scholar. This book shows her intelligence, her poetic strain, and her artistic view. It's a gem. The paper alone is worth the $10 bucks. It's a miniature, but it's lovely and packed with spells and information. I especially like the illustrations, the small details that make a book art and not just commercial fodder. This is art, and every witch and lover of witchlore ought to own it. Don't wait till it's out of print. It's a collector's item.

4 out of 5 stars Broad Overview of Pop and Classic Witch Literature.......2003-05-23

Witches' Brew is a dense literary anthology broken into three chapters. The first chapter Something Wicked This Way Comes: The Wicked Witch takes it name aptly from a line in a spell from Shakespeare's Macbeth. I was pleased to find this piece as the opening work in "Witches' Brew" but disappointed that this beautiful piece is abbreviated.

Something Wicked This Way Comes also contains W.B. Yeats, "The Sorcerer." Jocks identifies Yeats as a Ceremonial Magician in addition to the revered Irish poet and playwright that most know him to be. Yeats was a member of the Theosophical Society, Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. H.P. Blavatsky cofounder of this order, is included with a piece titled "Can the Double Murder" Cotton Mather, a staunch supporter of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials work provides an account that will chill the bones of most witches. Mather's short piece "Bridget Bishop" concerns a witch trial that depends on "spectral" evidence. On the lighter side, Benjamin Franklin's (yes, that Benjamin Franklin)short story is a tongue in cheek critique of the "scientific" approach used in witch trials. Franklin's contribution written in 1730 is a short essay called "A Witch Trial at Mount Holly." Oscar Wilde's mother, Lady Wilde's piece "The Horned Woman" is a legend about Irish witches. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, of Sherlock Holmes fame, is included with a dark look at magic in "The Leather Funnel."

Next, we find That's Witch with a "W": Witchcraft as Em-Power-ment. This chapter presents the powerful, omnipotent, witch and crone archetype. Beginning with a short poem by Emily Bronte, that uses nature as a metaphor for the spell that love casts. "Snatcher" by Dean Koontz is a compelling piece that makes a delightful read aloud piece on a dark and stormy night. This is a classic crone revenge story that includes a repulsive villain and a hideous monster. Doreen Valiente, one of the founders of the neopaganism movement is appropriately included in the anthology twice. Her poem "The Witch's Ballad," provides an insiders experience of a Sabbat. Erica Jong's "Figure of the Witch" truly embodies the theme of this chapter.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme: The Nature Witch is the last and my favorite chapter. Sandwiched between Doreen Valiente's basic course in witch craft "The Witches' Creed" poem and Erica Jong's potent warning against witch bias and anti-Semitism "Smoke," are wonderful pieces by the likes of Brothers Grimm and Emily Dickinson. A touching tale suitable to read to children "The Christmas Witch" by Rosemary Edgehill explains the significance of Yuletide. Evelyn Vaughn, (the pen name of the editor) contributes a lengthy story "Winter Solstice" that focuses on the semi-annual battle for dominance between the Oak King and Holly King.

It is pleasing that Native American voices are also included. Anita Endrezze's mythic tale, "The Humming of Stars and Bees and Waves," is an eerie Yaqui tale of a crone's epiphany after a retreat in a cave. Louise Erdrich, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, offers a haunting shape-shifter poem "The Strange People." If more diverse voices were included the anthology would be stronger still, afterall, witch and magic are global.

Yvonne Jocks' anthology provides a broad overview of popular and classic witch literature, crossing continents, cultures and approximately 400 years.

    Book Description

A Witch's Beverages and Brews shares the wonderful heritage of beverage making and consuming -- how drinks appeared on altars as gift to the gods, where toasts come from, and why we pass wine clockwise around the table. All this lore and superstition combines with modern magickal methods to help you design beverages that quench both physical and spiritual thirst completely while tantalizing your taste buds.

In the later half of the book, each chapter is devoted to a specific theme with a suggested component list, preparation ideas (timing), and a host of recipes for both consumption and spellcraft purposes. Some of the themes that are covered are "keeping love true," "prosperity potions," and "concocting a little luck." Whether you're creating a drink so you can internalize its qualities for daily living, or making it for a friend, there's something here for all occasions, needs, and tastes.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but Somewhat Fluffy, Not What I Expected.......2006-03-10

Another gift from my mother for Christmas. :) Until I had gotten this book, I had never heard of it, or the author, and I suspect this is one of those inexpensive Barnes and Noble finds that sometimes is snuck into the metaphysical section.

I'm not really sure how to define this book... It has recipes, but it's not precisely a recipe book. It has brewing and creation techniques, but I do not think that they are complete enough to define this is a "how to" potion book. It has a ingredient correspondence section, but not enough to define it as a book of correspondences. This book is a mish-mash of all those things, having basic information on various topics of interest, but not enough to make anybody proficient at potion making, and some of the information is of questionable accuracy.

The recipe section, which takes up more than ¾ of the book, has the various recipes divided by their intent (such as balance, banishment, communication, health, love and romance, protection, etc). Normally, for me this wouldn't be much of a problem, but without an index that cross-references all of the recipes, finding specific recipes for more specific intents becomes a challenge. For example, is the weight loss potion under health? Or beauty? Or banishment? Only skimming each chapter it could belong to will you be able to find it (if there is a potion like that even in the book). That makes the book very difficult to use. The potion recipes themselves are actually a combination of sodas, smoothies, teas, wines, and cocktails. This is neither a plus nor a negative to me, but for those looking for a more authentic, ritualistic idea to potion making, you'll be very disappointed. They will find the recipes (and consequently, most everything in the book from the "how to" to the correspondences) extremely "fluffy." For me, even though some of the recipes are of questionable... For example, many call for adding raw eggs, or combining two completely contradictory ingredients (one recipe I found asked for grapes, potatoes, rosemary, oranges, and an egg)... There are a few recipes in there that seem very good, very tasty, even if you separate it from it's supposed spiritual or magical significance.

To me, I think this is a fun, "for entertainment purposes" only book. The sort of thing to look at, maybe get a good recipe or two that may or may not be taken for a magical or spiritual purpose, but used mostly for nourishment and taste value. There are maybe one or two wine recipes that I would consider using ritualistically, but that is about it. A fun, fluffy book, not especially ritualistic or magical, that for $10 is worth a couple of good recipes and a fairly decent and useful correspondence chart.

5 out of 5 stars A Great How To of the Beverage World.......2003-06-10

This was my frist book about brewing. It was a wonderful read and an even greater kitchen companion. I love the simple recipies given in the first part of the book so that when you find a recipie with in the pages you are instructioned to death with the retellign of the basic steps. I would recomend this for any one who enjoys making and loving there own stuff. This is a great way to get in touch with the energies put into the beverages used for cerimonies also. wine was wine until I made it my self.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy, Thirst quenching & Diversified.......2001-12-12

It's amazing to see how many different beverages have had spiritual applications in history, and how many ingredients in even modern beverages have magickal applications. I can drink my magickal energy any time I wish now... great fun and good magick

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had in mind.......2001-11-09

The brewing instructions in this book were rudimentary at best, and the use of raw eggs in many of the drinks is questionable. Overall, I found that the book focussed far too much on recipes for sodapop, herbal teas, fruit-juices and Starbucks-like coffee recipes. The larger portion of the recipes in this books are Mz. Telesco's own concoctons. I was expecting more recipes for traditional drinks such as ale, mead, wine, etc... but, the recipes that they did give contained very brief, simplistic brewing instructions that had me a bit worried. This book was a bit dissappointing, really. If you like fanciful, sweet drinks and are not concerned with their religious and historical authenticity, then by all means, buy this book. Otherwise, save your money and get The Alaskan Bootlegger's Bible, a far more accurate and thorough guide.

5 out of 5 stars Join me for a drink???.......2001-02-20

Of all books that have recipes for "wiccan" beverages, this is the ULTIMATE guide. The recipes are set up so even the most novice of beverage makers can get right to it. There are recipes for all tastes-with or without "spirits" hot, cold, the list goes on. I want to try almost all of them!

I recently bought this book, and could try a couple of non-alchololic recipes in the weekend... They are delicious and very easy to prepare. However, preparing alcoholic drinks like mead, beer looks a little bit complicated and i am not quite sure where to find the beer yeast.

1 out of 5 stars More pointless mediocrity.......2007-04-11

As a Witch, I have no desire to read about biblical recipes or lore in a book billed as a Witch's Cookbook. Apart from this, the recipes are mediocre and written in a style best suited for the reader on prozac.

New age Wiccan practitioners just starting out will thus welcome Patricia Telesco's Kitchen Witch's Guide To Brews And Potions, which offers spice-infused recipes for all kinds of potions. Witch Bree's books are far above the usual offerings in this category. The introduction is concise yet touches on the essentials-- dealing more with your frame of mind as you continue on than a history lesson. These books are like good advice from a wise friend. I liked how the author presents the material seriously and treats it with respect, yet still remains accessible, light, and personable. Her books feel grounded, and based in traditional knowledge, while also managing to connect with the modern-day reader. Handy guide to resources, too. Oh, and did I mention the books are GORGEOUS?! The book artist and designer in me gives the visual presentation five stars as well. Highly recommended!

Very informative and helpful. Great source to help you identify manipulation and rebellion in the Body. Helps you to trace the problem to the source and deal with it. Great for pastors and laymen.

1 out of 5 stars Oh, for the love of Goddess..........2004-12-15

I have not, in fact, read this book, but in all honesty it sounds like one of stupidest things I've ever heard of. What a load of paranoid horse doody. We have better things to do with our time than curse people, like, for example, trying to make the world a better LESS bigoted place? If you want the TRUTH about witchcraft, try a book like the Spiral Dance, by Starhawk or What Witches Do, by the Farrars.

5 out of 5 stars Powerfully Whimsical and Feminine.......2001-06-06

This small book is powerfully whimsical, feminine and captivating. It is an enjoyable read of 88 pages that keeps you wanting more. Witch Bree uses ingredients that can easily be found in your kitchen or easily purchased at a health food store. Her chants and prayers are poetic and easy to memorize. Her book contains remedies for securing the home, staying healthy, spa like treatments using essentials oils and how to universally heal the earth. Also, there is a section on how to create a sacred workspace. It brings out the good witch in all of us. The only thing missing is the fairy dust.

Good Spells for Peace of Mind is such a treasure of a little book. The artwork is fantastic and beautiful, as is the entire book itself.

Witch Bree's writing style is fluid and poetic, which adds a gentle grace to the already beautiful book - making it a nice, calming read. There are many ideas and spells contained in this small whammy of a book that are sure to help you de-stress and enjoy life again.

I'm looking forward to getting Good Spells for Healing book next.

From the moment I layed eyes on this lil' magical book I was enchanted. This wonderful spell book is an easy yet enjoyable read. Including insights on witchcraft, spells, recipes, herbs and more. The real enjoyment comes not only from the information contained within, but it also tantalizes your senses of touch and feel. A Soft/Hard back book with incredible paper, illustrations and a ribbon tie. There are 6 total books in the series and everyone is well worth it. I find myself just walking by the bookcase and having to pick it up just so I can undo the ribbon and flip through the pages... The recipes are great the spells well versed. The only drawback is it leaves you wanting more... I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. CW
