- a world map showing locations of wizards around the globe
- tactile samples of a "fairy flag" with one wish remaining and a phoenix feather to aid in flying charms
- booklets explaining the proper use of spells, familiars, and potions
- a removable dragon pendant allowing the user to dowse for mythical beasts
- a pack of eight removable fortune-tellling cards
- a 48-page mini book of divination on the final spread

Awesome book!.......2007-08-02
These "Ologies" books are great! I even love to look at them. They're crammed full of interesting information and all the little pull out items and 3D trinkets are really cool and engaging. These books keep my kids occupied for good periods of time, and they'll go back and look at them again and again.
Excellent book, sure to capture the young imagination.......2007-07-21
If the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" is true for 90% of books out there, then Wizardology falls into the other 10%. Captivating from first sight and not letting up all the way to the end, this book is just right on so many levels. Consider:
1. Its rich graphics are anything but boring. Elaborate designs, drawings, old-style text font, and drawings make every page rich and colorful.
2. Almost every page has something to touch, pull, or feel. This book engages the kinesthetic learner very well.
3. The author clearly knows what kids like. Wizards, dragons, magic, spells--they're all here.
4. Topics for discussion are everywhere. What does it mean to say yes to Magic and no to Science? Can animals communicate with us in ways we can understand? That's just the tip of the iceberg.
The one caution is that this book contains a lot of big words. However, in my experience, children are so engaged by everything else going on that they really don't stumble over them. Even so, I'd recommend this to about the 4th grade and up. Younger kids might get confused and overwhelmed, which would be a loss, because the actual text is arguably Wizardology's strongest attribute. Also, as some have said, I wouldn't worry about this book convincing kids to start casting spells everywhere or actually believing that Science isn't a good thing. The book's style is clearly presented as fiction, and young people quickly pick up on this.
All in all, I highly recommend this book for the upper elementary student, whether you're a parent, tutor, teacher, or a kid yourself. And it's pretty fun for adults as well.
Great book like all of the other ones!.......2007-07-13
A must have for the fan of the "ology" series!!! My son loves this book and so do I!

The Merlin Trilogy is Mary Stewart's take on the Arthurian legend in three books: The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment. These books have Merlin, Arthur's wizard mentor, as their focal point, and the result is a charming, engrossing tale providing a unique perspective on a familiar tale. Her history is superb and richly detailed, her characterizations are masterful, and her plotting is perfect. You'll be entranced by this magical story.
Book Description
The Arthurian legend is one of the most enduring and powerful of myths, and Mary Stewart's classic
The Merlin Trilogy is one of its most beloved and acclaimed retellings. In prose that is as vividly, achingly real as it is poetic,
New York Times bestselling author Mary Stewart brings to life the man behind the myth: Myrddin Emrys ... Merlinus Ambrosius ... Merlin.
The Crystal Cave
The Hollow Hills
The Last Enchantment
Born the bastard son of a Welsh princess, Myrddin Emrys -- or, as he would later be known, Merlin -- leads a perilous childhood in
The Crystal Cave, haunted by portents and visions. But destiny has great plans for this no-man's-son, taking him from prophesying before the High King Vortigern to the crowning of UtherPendragon ... and the conception of Arthur -- king for once and always.
Keeping watch over the young Arthur Pendragon in
The Hollow Hills, the prince and prophet Merlin Ambrosius is haunted by dreams of the magical sword Caliburn, hidden for centuries. When Uther Pendragon is killed in battle, the time of destiny is at hand, and Arthur must claim the fabled sword to become the true High King of Britain.
In
The Last Enchantment, Arthur Pendragon is king at last. Unchallenged on the battlefield, he melds the country together in a time of promise as Merlin works to keep safe the once and future king. But sinister powers plot to destroy Camelot, and when the witch-queen Morgause -- Arthur's own half sister -- ensnares him in an incestuous liaison, a fatal web of love, betrayal, and bloody vengeance is woven.
Extensively researched and beautifully written,
The Merlin Trilogy is the epic culmination of an acclaimed career, a legend in and of itself.

A favorite to read over and over again,.......2007-07-18
I've worn out my second set of these classics, they're so re-readable after only a short recess. I love the historical accuracy combined with fantasy made believable. The thorough basis in research is comparable only to Dorothy Dunnett's great sagas. I also appreciated the larger size of the second generation of paperbacks. One of the things that always amused me about the original paperback series' cover art was that apparently the artist never read the books, with both Merlin and Authur depicted as stereotypical blond heros. Glad to see the second series corrected that.
All time favorite.......2007-05-15
An old song by Melanie pines "I wish I could find a good book to live in". This trilogy is that for me. I have been reading them at least once a year since they were published, have multiple copies at both my houses, have given many to friends and acquaintances who evinced the slightest interest. Of all the Arthurian books out there, from Mallory on, this rings true to me on so many levels. It is a joy from "I am an old man now" through to her description of Merlin, alone, listening to the music of the stars. Please, read these books.
You'll read it again and again..........2006-10-25
I believe the first time I read the Crystal Cave series was when my aunt suggested it to me in junior high school. Since then, I think I have read this series at least 10 times and I have recommended it to many of my friends. The story of Arthur and Merlin is one that has always captivated people - it is hard not to be pulled in by the epic nature of it, the magic, the drama, the intrigue, and the rise of these two powerful figures.
What I love so much about Mary Stewart's treatment of the well-known story is the way she grounds it in history and tells it as the story of people who, extraordinary though they may be, have faults, fears, insecurities, passions etc. These are figures that we can relate to in ways that I think more fantasy-based treatments make difficult. Prior to reading this series, Merlin and Arthur (and all the supporting characters) were only mythic, fairy-tale-like figures in my imagination. This series made them real to me and brought them alive for me in an entirely new way.
I loved that the story was told from Merlin's perspective and allowed us to follow him from his childhood through his struggles to understand and use his powers until he finally meets Arthur and his destiny. Every time I read this series I speed through them and read one right after the other. I think you'll find you do this same.
One note to mention - when I originially read this I didn't realize that the first three had been written as a trilogy and the fourth book was added later. I read them all together and I would recommend not missing The Wicked Day.
Good read.......2006-08-20
It's got to be a good 25-30 years since I read these three books, and were just as enjoyable now as they were then. Stuart has a lovely way of describing a scene, the land and the people. If you purchased the trilogy in one book, just remember that they were originally three separate books. I found that while I read it as one book this time, there were redundancies and/or things that I would have expected to be cut from one large novel, but necessary additions in three separate novels. I found myself skipping through those sections.
You won't find any great surprises in the story, if you are familiar with the legends of King Arthur. This story is mainly Merlin's from boyhood to old man and beloved cousin and counselor of Arthur. While I don't usually enjoy a book written in the first person -- as you lose so much from what the other characters are experiencing -- the author pulled this off well enough. With Merlin's visions, we were able to see happenings that were not personally witnessed by Merlin.
Of the books I have read so far on the Arthurian legends, my favorite is still The Road to Avalon, followed by Queen of Camelot. It's been so many years since I've read The Mists of Avalon I can't rate that amongst these until I've read it again.
All in all very enjoyable and I would recommend this for younger readers whose parents are trying to find well written books without the constant presence of bodice ripping.
A thumbs down to the publisher, I found many small typos that became a bit irritating after a while, i.e. women instead of woven, is instead of in, etc. You would think that after the first publication they would catch these and fix them for subsequent pulications.
Remembering.......2006-03-08
These stories are wonderfully absorbing. I have read and re-read all of them for many, many years, and as exciting as they were to my adolescent mind, they remain quite as engaging in (what passes for) maturity. I can still remember finding out, as a senior in high school, that the football hero also loved Mary Stewart's Arthurian saga, and had read the books more than once. (And what a delightful thing for the troublesome geeky girl to learn!)
To this day, I can remember the day I found these books. I can remember the weather, the town, the bookstore - and, of course, the experience of voraciously tearing into each story, consuming every passing page. To be able to pinpoint such a moment of discovery after twenty-four years ... this must say something fine about any book. It's the finest thing I can say for Mary Stewart's gifts to Arthuriana. That and, "Thank you."

Good, but not excellant..........2007-05-07
This pertains to the 4th edition (published 2005). The material is solid and informative, but the photos are all black and white. I find this unacceptable in the twenty first century. Additionally, many of the photos are of very poor quality.
solid intro to energy.......2000-04-25
Energy provides comprehensive information on basic energy principles, electricity, fossil energy resources, nuclear power, renewable energy resources, energy conservation, and the impacts of energy use on the environment. While it contains all the requisite equations and problem sets, the concise, clear coverage of the environmental and policy issues surrounding our energy use really distinguishes this book from other energy texts.
Book Description
Here, archaeologically documented,is the story of the religion of the Goddess. Under her, women’s roles were far more prominent than in patriarchal Judeo-Christian cultures. Stone describes this ancient system and, with its disintegration, the decline in women’s status. Index; maps and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Everyone shoud read this book. .......2007-08-26
I just finished "When God was a Woman" today. I generally have a hard time with non-fiction and it can take me months to get through one book. I read this book from cover to cover in less than a week. It does bog down in a few places, but the theories being discussed are pretty mind boggling. I support the author's decision to pack in as much evidence as she does.
This book makes the following claims (supported by archaeological evidence):
*the bible was not created in a vacuum: it was written by men as a response to the world they found themselves living in at the time.
*the subjugation of women in the bible had a definite purpose: to lessen the political and economic power women had 3000ish years ago.
*the story of Adam and Eve was specifically contrived to attack the existing Goddess religion. The serpent, the tree of knowledge, the fig leaf clothing, and the successful tempting of Eve were all aimed at commonly recognized aspects of that earlier religion.
Writing today and referring to the Web, or the GOP or Oprah may not be understood even 500 years from now, let alone 3000. The biggest plus of "When God was a Woman" (in my opinion) is that the author places the bible in context of the historical period in which it was written.
Understand, I am not particularly religious. But I know I live in a society that is based on Judeo-Christian morality. I live in one nation under God. I would swear on a bible in a court of law. I have a religious president. And women are not yet considered equal to men.
No, I don't want to go back to a Goddess religion. Humans had at least 7000 years of it, with at least some documented subjugation of men (killing of the king/queen's consort when he loses his potency, or his reverence to Her.) And now we have had at least 3000 years of God the Father religion that claims women must be controlled by men. Isn't it time we advanced?
This Book Is Tripe.......2007-06-22
Stones reliance upon disproved theories and twisted evidence as well as less than stellar, biased, references is a great disappointment as I am truly interested in discovering what few matriarchal societies exist and or existed throughout human history.
Stone does a disservice to her cause by manipulating truth to fit her agenda.
The loser is the uninformed reader who may actually believe there is truth top be found here.
Not a cliched religious experience..............2007-05-08
Although she does seem to have a tendency to go off on a tangent, for me, this book confirms what I've known and felt for years - underrepresented in most organized religions and totally out-of-place in Christianity, period. After reading this book, I think I'm ready to 'come out' and tell family and friends what I've known for several years - I'm Pagan as the day is long and secure in my beliefs and religion!
This is a BLISTERING critique of the Levite Priesthood.......2007-02-28
A better title of this book would read: "Before the Bible, God was a Woman." While I have a slight problem with this authors title of her work matching up her actual subject matter, never have I read anything so well describing the problems I have always had with the Judeo-Christian Bible.
While there were undisputed Indo-European invasions into southern lands for thousands of years, their influence on the conquered peoples' religions is not as easy to determine. Indeed, how can we really know how thought changed between 6000-4000 years ago in the ancient Middle and Near East? Marilyn Stone certainly has her very plausible theories about the consequences of these invasions. While this part of the book is enlightening it isn't as blistering a critique as later in the book. At least the Goddess, and women in general, retained some status and legal rights in cultures around Israeli occupied Canaan.
Once Ms Stone sets her sights on the biblical account of creation and of the subjugation of Canaan, she doesn't hold back. The amount of barbarous acts that the Bible documents against the native Canaanites is amazing. Read Joshua and Kings I and II if you don't believe Ms Stone. Why did this genocide take place? For the simple reason that the native people didn't believe in the "real" God. I felt no man-bashing, as some other reviewers read in her book. I only took away religious extremism at its worst, and women and the Goddess were the victims of this "young upstart" religion of only about 3000 years old called Judaism. This isn't Ms Stone making these numbers up, many biblical scholars believe the Pentateuch was only written between 1200 to 1000 BC.
The absolutely most interesting part of Ms Stones work was the deconstruction of the Genesis creation story. She cites not only how each and every event was carefully constructed to denounce the Goddess religion, and make its practitioners sin against God by every major rite of the old religion, but to also condemn women for all of history afterward to be men's "helpers."
If you ever wondered what bothered you about Patriarchial religion, this book captures the epitome of monotheisms' dark side.
****.......2006-04-05
There are a few errors historically speaking but the overall book is informative and insightful. P.S. Also, it's not for one moment just another 'feminist rant'. It's a scholarly piece of work.

Bat House Builder's Handbook.......2007-04-05
My grand daughter's are anxious to get started building! I bought this and the Stokes Guide to Bats. They love the books. Easy to use and with a little help 8 & 10 years-old understand the blueprints.
This Guide Is Worth Buying.......2007-03-14
I was a bit annoyed to open the package from Amazon and see this glorified pamphlet inside. "There goes ten bucks!" I thought. Don't let the size fool you, though. When I opened the booklet and started flipping through, I saw that it really is an excellent guide. It is far superior to anything else I have seen on the subject. I have seen bat houses for sale in my area that do not come close to meeting the well researched guidelines described in this book. Worth buying, definitely. I just wanted to combat the mosquitos in my neighborhood -- now I will likely join the Bat Conservancy and build houses for any friends who ask.
Bat House Builder's Book.......2006-11-06
Lots of good information in here. This book went into detail that I'd never even thought about. Definitely worth a buy if you want a good house that will attract bats.
Good houses, could use variety.......2004-09-28
Maybe I'm too sold on what's marketed as variety.
I agree with what other reviewers have said, that these are good bathouses and the instructions are easy to follow. I just wish there were a little more variety in terms of design.
The book, by the way, over and above the houses does have some reference information on bats including where to put the houses. That was helpful.
If you're into bats, and would like to make your own houses, this is the book I would recommend.
great tool for any bathouse builder.......2004-03-08
This is a very concise and thorough book on how to construct a successful bat house.

This Book Changed My Life.......2007-07-23
I was just now filling out a form to send to "Crossings", in answer to their request for me to tell them about the book that changed my life. I decided to see if Amazon had the book, for the correct spelling of the author's name. So, here I am posting a review. Before I read this book, all my prayers were about me, myself and I. My prayer time was a miserable time. A friend let me read her copy. My prayers went from being about me, to praising God for who he was, his goodness, his mercy, and his love in my life, and that of my family. My prayer time became a joyful time. I found myself praising God, regardless of the situation I was facing, knowing my heavenly Father was in complete control of my life. While I've never agreed with Merlin that God sent it all...the good AND the evil, I believe it could not have come my way unless God ALLOWED it. (I'll put it this way: I agree with Joseph, in the Bible. 'you meant it for my harm, but God meant it for my good.') I am not posting a review for the sake of arguing with anyone. I will not. I just want to say that this book definitely changed my prayer life, therefore, my entire life. I encourage anyone and everyone to read it, especially if your prayer life is boring, or frustrating. It could change YOUR prayer life!
Pleased as punch.......2007-05-14
Awesome book - was in just as good as condition as listed.
Disagree with Ron.......2007-01-27
All I have to say is that you can look at the Bible 100 times over and still have no idea what you are reading. Many truths of God come in prayer and in this case "praise". Ron's review a couple of posts down says that Merlin is preaching to us that we should praise God for the evil that has come. That is completely and wholly FALSE. Merlin is telling us to praise God for the good that he will work through the evil. God does NOT cause evil; the devil creates evil and sin. God works through the devil's horrific(horrific is an understatement) ways and brings dumbfounding presence of Himself to the situation.
So when Ron says,"But it is senseless to praise Him FOR sin or evil. God hates sin and evil, and the Bible is full of clear teaching about it," he is correct that God hates sin and evil, but we do NOT praise Him for sin and evil; we praise him for his wonderful plan fro us to work straight through that evil and fill us with everlasting love. I highly HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. So listen my brothers and sisters, if you want the true meaning to this life-changing book, pray and trust in the Lord!
Great inspiration and totally tested.......2007-01-23
This is a new way of looking at how to overcome challenges.
For all of us up against the wall, this is one way to bring the walls down!!
20 years later, I understand!.......2006-10-28
This book had a seminal impact on my life when I read it over 20 years ago. I knew that it captured deep truth and God's heart in some mysterious way. I also know that its principles have not failed me in my experience over all this time.
I say mysterious because for all these years I have also struggled with the conflict between the teachings in this book and teachings from the pulpit. Some aspects of this book go beyond "controversial" and approach "heretical". Read some of the comments in reviews below. But yet, I knew that it was, indeed, correct. I just did not understand how.
My purpose in writing this is that after all this time, God finally gave me understanding in a wonderful way - through 2 different sermons given in two different -unrelated- churches on the same day. They said, essentially, the same thing and directly addressed my long-standing concerns about the theology of this book.
One paster was from Pass Christian, Louisiana, and related how Katrina is re-shaping his world, up to and including opening doors for him to directly minister to the families of the Amish school shooting victims up here in our area.
Praise God for sin and for the works of Satan? Never! That is anathema to us.
Well, carefully consider this. Do we ever thank God for the crucifixion of his Son? Think about it.
From the standpoint of His disciples back then, there could be no clearer act of sin and Satan, yet we praise God for it.
This has been burning in my heart for a week now, so I went to Amazon to order a bunch of these books to give as gifts to my children and close friends, along with a cover letter that will be similar to this (my first) review here at Amazon to help them over the hump that held me for over 20 years. Read this book. It holds a foundational truth for our Christian walk.
Praise God!

Initially published nearly thirty years ago, Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave has been spellbinding readers and converting them into serious Arthurian buffs ever since. The first in a series of four books, this novel focuses on the early life of Merlin the magician, and the political developments of fifth-century Britain. Not for the fainthearted, this verbose text pays careful attention to historical details and methodical plot development.
Merlin's childhood is formed by the absence of his reticent, convent-bound mother and his unnamed and unknown father. As the bastard grandson of a local king, Merlin is the object of both envy and ridicule. His strange powers and predictions earn him greater status as a pariah, and he leaves home as a preadolescent. Returning years later as a young man--empowered by self-knowledge and magic--Merlin finds himself caught in the currents of the shifting kingdoms.
As an established classic in this genre, and the first in a popular series, The Crystal Cave introduces this familiar character with fresh sensitivity. While readers looking for the romance of First Knight will be disappointed, those happy with tight writing and a complex story line will be satisfied. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
An excellent book, Mary Stewart begins to tell the tale of a young
Merlin. Here, Merlin is a boy, son of a Welsh princess. A geeky type of
kid, with an interesting is learning, this marks him as odd. People
think liking this stuff is so odd they begin to talk about him as being
the offspring of a demon!
Demon geek, there you go. No one likes him, if other words, so he
has to leave. He ends up finding his father, Ambrosius, an ex-king, and
studying some more.
Then there is the whole thing with Ambrosius' brother Uther.
Nice first book in a series.......2007-07-23
Mary Stewart delivers a quick read that takes the reader to the beginning of the Arthur story. Merlin develops from a young, retreating boy to a self-assured (perhaps cocky?) man who can receive visions but cannot control them. The characters are real and well-drawn (I especially liked Ambrosius) and the machinations and battles for control of Britain are handled thoroughly, but from a distance. There is a sense of build-up that does not quite pay off, but will lead the reader nicely into the next book in the series.
Such a good read.......2007-06-18
Exactly what I was in the market for. A well written fantasy novel that is so convincing you'll think it really happened... I highly recommend this book and the other two in the series.
The first of four.......2007-05-14
The first in the four part Arthurian/Merlin Saga. Told by Merlin himself, the book introduces the reader to a divided Britain, and adds some realism to the Wizardry mythology.
The saga continues with The Hollow Hills (The Arthurian Saga, Book 2)
A new look at Merlin.......2007-05-04
This was a fun book to read. It was neat to see Merlin as a child and young man, rather than the wise old wizard you're so used to seeing him as. A very original story and a very talented author, make this one a great read!

My review.......2007-08-30
I found this book rather childish, mostly for children . I did not find it helpful. The book is beautiful to see , with beautiful pictures. I guess I am just to advanced to find it of any use.
Charm a whole new generation of aspiring wizards .......2007-06-05
"Those who study the art of wizardology must remember that all magic is an act of the imagination." So says the legendary Merlin in Dugald A. Steer's THE WIZARDOLOGY HANDBOOK: A Course for Apprentices. When we last heard from the Master conjuror, he had fashioned a journal --- known to magic enthusiasts as WIZARDOLOGY: The Book of the Secrets of Merlin --- from the trunk of a tree in which he'd been imprisoned, divulging centuries' worth of knowledge and insight on the mystical world, in hopes of finding his next great successor.
In this companion volume, scribbled on the remaining pieces of his wooden confines, he once again extends the invitation to wizards-in-training and supplements his already abundant lessons with even more fascinating facts, humorous anecdotes and spellbinding illustrations that focus on the natural world and seasons. This enchanting and in-depth course for Wizard apprenticeship describes everything a student of magic would need to follow in Merlin's footsteps --- from dealing with genies, fairies and elves, casting spells and harnessing weather, to making wands, using magical plants and interpreting the positions of stars.
Replete with a glossary of magical terms, stickers to decorate your workshop and a section for your own spells, this fantastical handbook will surely fire the imaginations of readers young and old, and charm a whole new generation of aspiring wizards worthy of the great Merlin himself.

Interesting......................2007-04-15
I am Wiccan, but I thought this book was interesting. Some of this book includes lots of real occult information like the elements and it talks of an athame, but at the same time, they have incorrect information regarding fairies, nature spirits, witches and that's only naming a few. This book would be a great gift for kids who are interested in spells or Wizardry, but not necessarily interested in real Wicca, but if you are trying to buy for a beginner Wiccan this book would only provide confusing or unhelpful. More advanced Wiccans may find this book amusing, despite the lack of correct information. All in all, this is an interesting volume and it was done quite creativley, so for that I grant it four stars.

Helpful...but.......2007-02-26
The book was helpful; but if you really want guidance from Mr. Coslick or anyone in his organization, all I can say is GOOD LUCK.
I felt ripped off.......2006-06-13
This book is an obvious effort to cash in on anxious beginners looking to start their own medical billing practice. Most of this book has copied forms from other companies that sell billing software and pages of glossary terms. There is very little meat here and little effort I believe to actually help the beginner. The object here I believe is, to make a quick buck.
Disapointing, Unless your 10 and starting a business.......2006-05-23
I was excited to locate a book that targeted exactly what I was trying to achieve. Medical Billing Marketing. Not just marketing, but Marketing for my business. So I ordered it, even paid the extra $10 to get it here STAT!
Once I got it it appeared to be an owners manual of some sort...but "dont judge a book by its cover"
Once I opened it, I began to read, many of the Only 33 pages on marketing. The information was redundant, and spent telling you how a doctoers office works??? Than not to follow up with prospects???? Than to just walk in drop a card, and hope that someone remebers its around if they are ever in the market????? That was the worst sales/marketing advice I have ever been given! Finally hitting home the newest concept of Electronic billing, which is not new in my neck of the woods. So also outdated!
The next 10 or so pages are a glossery of very basic terms we should all be aclimated with.
The final pages are them trying to sell you more informative products..
In short, go to your local bookstore and find the book, "Making Friends with Big Bird and the Sesame Street Gang" It will be more informative, and you can also share it wioth the kids!
He knows medical marketing.......2006-04-27
After being in the medical field over 5 years, and working for such doctors as Family Physicians, Orthopedic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, OB/GYN, and Nephrologists, I have come to know the mind of most doctors. Male, female, surgeon or family physician, doesn't matter because they really do have quite similar ways of thinking and functioning. Merl Coslick's books are right on the money. As I read the first one I thought, "wow he really knows how it is behind those clinic doors". I also think he hits very key points for general marketing. If you need to market to doctors, read his books.
An excellent and well written book!.......2002-06-25
