5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-24

I really enjoy this book because it really influences every part of a girl's life. You see, if you are ready for a book that challenges you in godly character in every part of your life, this is for you! I prefer books that cover a lot of ground!--and this is one of them. It is definitely an "All in One" book. I also appreciate how George wrote in many of the scriptures so you don't have to search around for a bible--makes it much more versatile--and you can feel like you can pick it up and start reading at any time. Very good. Blessings!

5 out of 5 stars This will Change your Life.......2006-02-26

This book is amazing. I learned so much more about God's word and praying even after being a christian for eleven years.

When i frist got this book in my girls youth group I didn't think i was going to like it but I was wrong. Once i started reading it I liked it more and more as the further i got into it.

Althrough it takes a while to get through a chapeter you could spilt it up through the day.

This book got me to want to have a closer realationship with God and it got me to want to spend time with God every day (not just beacuse it's the right thing to do)This book made me want to look for other teen devotion books.

3 out of 5 stars "Cool Mom's" review.......2005-12-09

I am reading through Woman After God's Own Heart, which I so wanted to share with my son's girlfriend, very new and unsure of her faith, with absolutely no spiritual support from her parents. But "Woman" is very mature and deals with women more my age. I saw "Young Woman" here when I ordered another copy of "Woman" for a close friend. I'm excited about the book... I know some of these teens reviews are mixed, and one actually very harsh. I will say this to the young ladies out there... it IS possible to live purely and holy before God as a teen. I did it with peer pressure and all... I saved myself for marriage and have had a wonderful life. It was not and still is not always easy - even adults have peer pressure. My husband and I talk to our kids about EVERYTHING and don't "flowerize" anything. It is hard out there - but God requires integrity from us. Remember, Elizabeth George was a teen at one time and she raised teen daughters... the way she speaks is out of a heart of love for you and for the Kingdom of God. Philippians 4:8 says Whatever things are pure, true, just, lovely and of good report with VIRTUE and PRAISE - think on THOSE things. When I read the book with my daughter I'll come back to give my final opinion. Blessings!

2 out of 5 stars Too rosy for me.......2005-12-07

The purpose of the book and the message is nice, but George's advice of how teenage girls should behave gave me the impression she expects them to be sweet, spotless little angels. Sorry, but we all know that's not possible, no matter how much some parents wish it is. George seems to have forgotten this fact, even though she herself had tough teen years and an obnoxious stage (hey, we all did!). I've been a Christian all my life and was never an out of control teenager, but when my own dear mother gave me this book, I could tell after just a few pages that it was not going to work for me. In fact, George's tone was so conservative, I nearly swore off Christian guidebooks forever. Don't get me wrong; it's not a bad book altogether and the messages about God's love were very uplifting. Unfortunetly, a lot of her advice on how to be a "proper" Christian girl was unrealistic.

The most startling part of the book was when she shared the dating rules her husband placed for their own daughters: No dating whatsoever until after high school. Once out of high school, they STILL couldn't date unless the boy asked the father first (this included long distance calls if necessary, even if the "date" consisted of nothing more than going out to get a coke!) This long-distance thing seems to imply that the girls weren't living at home anymore, and yet he still ran their social lives? Call me a hoodlum, but that's controlling, not protecting; we're talking about girls who were legally adults here. I half expected George to say that her husband also picked out his daughters' spouses for them. She almost gave the impression that her husband didn't trust their daughter's judgement.

Please don't get the wrong impression; I believe strongly that teens should be taught about Christ, I just don't think George did the best job of it in this case. She's not a bad writer, but she doesn't appear to realize that most people wouldn't appreciate reading a whole book written with a gently patronizing tone that seems more fit for small children than young adults. Try to keep in mind that being Christian alone doesn't qualify someone as a good adviser and just because some of you moms like George doesn't mean your daughters will. No matter how sweet George may be, she doesn't appear to understand modern teenagers enough and teens should not be advised by someone who doesn't understand them. For a more realistic view of teen life, I recommend "Teen Ink", any of the wonderful "Chicken Soup" books, "Queen Bees and Wannabes" (if you're a parent trying to help your daughter with teen issues), or the awesome "Chocolate for the Teen's Dreams". Blessings on your journey with Christ!

Fourteen-year-old Georgia Nicolson is back in British author Louise Rennison's irreverent, laugh-out-loud sequel to the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging. Written in diary form, these truly hilarious books chronicle the often minute-by-minute, very dramatic, and significant flip-flops of a teenager's psyche.

7:18 p.m.
My eyes are all swollen up like mice eyes from crying. Even my nose is swollen. It's not small at the best of times, but now it looks like I've got three cheeks. Marvelous. Thank you, God.

9:00 p.m.
I'll never get over this.

9:10 p.m.
Time goes very slowly when you're suicidal.

What tragedy has her so distraught? Her parents have told her she's moving to New Zealand just when she's managed to snog (kiss--look it up in the glossary) the SG (Sex God, a.k.a Robbie). This is of course not the only source of drama in Georgia's eventful life. Her half Scottish wildcat, Angus, who is the size of a small Labrador, herds the poodles next door and terrorizes the neighborhood. Her little sister, Libby, who is slightly mad, stores her "pooey knickers" and her scuba-diving Barbie doll in Georgia's bed. Her mother (from whom she inherited her orangutan eyebrow gene and possibly her "gigantic basoomas") is clearly inhabiting Earth solely to make her life miserable, and even her best friend Jas is "half girl, half turnip."

Despite the fact that she's spared from going to "Kiwi-a-gogo land," things don't get much better for Georgia. She's suspended for a childish prank right before her dad returns from New Zealand, she falls in love with the SG who dumps her for being too young, and Dave, the "red-herring" boyfriend she's using to make the SG jealous calls her a "heartless whatsit." And, she continues, "the spot on my bum is probably a boil. I wonder what Buddha would do now?" Rennison's comedic timing is brilliant. Adolescent angst ("I hope I am not driven to the brink of madness by grief") vanishes less than an hour later ("Angus can fetch sticks!!!") and sometimes even sooner. (Warning: Do not read this book while riding a train or bus unless you don't care what people think of intermittent explosive laughter. Seriously.) (Ages 12 and older) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Georgia Nicolson has started dating the Sex God (aka Robbie). So life should be perfect . . . except in Georgia's life, nothing is ever perfect. Her cat, Angus (the size of a small Labrador), is terrorizing the neighborhood. Her sister, Libby (who is slightly mad), hides her pooey knickers at the bottom of Georgia's bed.

Then the Sex God breaks it off because she's too young. It's time for a plan. It's time for a Red Herring. It's time for Georgia to become a "heartless boy magnet!"

5 out of 5 stars Commuting with Georgie.......2007-09-07

I loved it! I loved the fact that she is such a self absorbed teenager - the fact that her sister crawls into bed with all her toys including scuba diving Barbie - the fact that her legs go all gelloid - the fact that her friends are just like her - the fact that every adult has at least one fault - the fact that French toast means talking French while eating eggy toast, but best of all, the fact that I thought just like her when I was a teenager :-) The only bad part was laughing aloud when I was driving - and not wanting it to end when I pulled into my driveway.

5 out of 5 stars On the Brightside, I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God.......2007-06-13

How do you deal with the emotional rollercoaster of catching the Sex God, and then losing him? That's what the main character, Georgia Nicolson, has to try and get through. Georgia is a 14 year old girl living in England (in the present day). The book starts out with Georgia living out her perfect dream. She is he girlfriend of a SEX GOD. But soon, she loses him o her enemy, Wet Lindsey. In an effort to get him back, she starts dating one of the Sex God's friends, David the Laugh. Throughout the confusion of that she has to deal with her poodle attacking cat, her (married) mother flirting with Dr. "George Clooney", and some definitely air-headed friends.

This is my favorite book I have ever read. But, I do have a favorite part in particular. You have to understand though, I had been laid over in the Kansas City Airport for 6 hours and I was completely sleep deprived. Anyways, my favorite part is when Georgia described how her little sister was sitting on her lap and she "let off the smelliest, loudest fart known to humanity. It came out of her bum-oly with such force that she lifted off my knee. Like a hovercraft".

After reading this book, it is clear to see that the main idea of this book is just learning how to deal with growing up and moving past the obstacles that life throws at you. You have to make all the wrong choices to finally see why the good choice is the best choice.

I loved how the problems Georgia went through were not only hysterical, but could also be recognized by all. The only thing that I would change about the book would be the format. I don't really like the whole diary-entry format. I believe that girls between the ages of 11-17 should read this book. They would relate to the trials and triumphs of Georgia the best.

5 out of 5 stars On the Bright Side, I'm now the Girlfriend of a Sex God:further confessions of Georgia Nicolson.......2007-04-25

On the Bright Side, I'm now the Girlfriend of a Sex God:further confessions of Georgia Nicolson is a book about a teenager named Georgia Nicolson. This book is her diary in which she writes exactly how she feels. Georgia has a rather large cat, Angus, a bestfriend who overly obsesses over her boyfriend Tom, and a Sex God (a.k.a Robbie Tom's older brother). All in all Georgia lives an exciting life which makes for a terrific book.
My favorite part of this book is when Georgia is running out to the field and she just lets everything go. She wasn't worrying about how her nose looked or who could see her. I loved this part because she was finally just being herself. Also, she didn't care about what people thought about her anymore.
I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a good laugh. However, if you're looking to read a little at a time I wouldnt read this book. This book is the kind of book that once you start reading you can't stop. It is a hilarious teenager reality and no one can go wrong by choosing this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Teen Lit.......2007-04-25

Pretty much the same basic premiss as _Angus_ but spanning a shorter period of time. I do like how the books aren't just about Georgia and her SG (that's sex god to the rest of us) but shows how she deals with her friends and her family. I still hope I wasn't like her when I was growing up though.

4 out of 5 stars another fun bit of reading.......2007-04-25

Very enjoyable--picks up right after the first book, same problems are haunting our lovely heroine, Georgia: Robbie being difficult about her age, Jas being completely sucked into her boyfriend Tom, her parents being weird, her mad little sister and now Angus is love sick!

Too funny and too much fun--now if only the library would get the third one in so I could read it too. Still pretty tame language, etc. Suitable for a 14 year old (as that's hold old Georgia is) there is some teen related issues, but they are dealt with like a standard 14 year old--making fun of them.

Totally fun read.

Book Description

One of the most eagerly-anticipated graphic novels of the last several years: a lively, character-driven graphic narrative set in a sci-fi/fantasy milieu. While bearing a superficial resemblance to Marvel Comics' The Mighty Thor, a 1960s series by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the story and characters of Young GODS & Friends are sexy, ribald, politically incorrect, and outrageously funny. On the evening prior to a spectacular galaxy-spanning wedding, the reluctant groom, Prince Heros, son of Otan, Ruler of All-Worlds, needs one last adventure before succumbing to life in a marriage of convenience and political intrigue. With his boyhood friend and cousin Strangehands, Heros of All-Worlds sets off across the Abraxus Nebula for a night of innocent adventure, recreating their childhood passion for "dragon chasing." Amusing circumstances dictate that the royally gorgeous yet foul-mouthed spitfire Princess Adastra, older sister of the bride-to-be Celestra of Orgasma, shall be coming along for the dragon ride that, through the mysteries of time and space, lasts considerably longer than just one night. Thus begins this odyssey of three errant gods with entirely mismatched goals and personalities seeking fun across the universe.

This volume collects the entirety of the artist's Young GODS stories from the acclaimed Barry Windsor-Smith: STORYTELLER comic book series from the 1990s, including the hotly-anticipated, previously unpublished issues 10 and 11, plus new story material created especially for this edition. BWS: STORYTELLER presented Young GODS, The Paradoxman, and The Freebooters, three fresh, new comics series written and drawn by Windsor-Smith, in a novel format that rotated each monthly series into the lead feature. Widely regarding these entertaining and literate tales as the best comics work of the artist's career, Windsor-Smith's 30-year fan base was crushed when STORYTELLER's schedule came to an abrupt and premature halt with issue 9, in 1997, with BWS claiming lack of support and bad faith on the part of the original publisher. Beginning with Young GODS & Friends in 2003, Fantagraphics is collecting each of BWS:STORYTELLER's titles into separate full-color editions including all of the stories published in issues 1 through 9, and, in the case of Young GODS & Friends, many never-before-published pages, plus background information and behind-the-scenes art.

5 out of 5 stars What Barry Windsor-Smith is all about!.......2005-03-13

I have been a fan of Barry Windsor-Smith like most since his talent graced the pages of Conan The Barbarian. I followed him through his Gorblimey Press years, his on and off Marvel years, and Valiant, Image, and Malibu stints. I own and cherish most every print and portfolio Barry Windsor-Smith has ever produced and enjoy studying the art and meaning of them often. But I can honestly and sincerely say that there has been no better piece of art and storytelling to come from the mind and through the Esterbrook Falcon #048 of Barry Windsor-Smith than his Storyteller series. The YoungGods and Friends collection is one third of the proof to that statement. This book not only gives the reader great entertainment, humor, story, and art of the YoungGods series. It gives the reader a glimpse of how much the artist, the storyteller poured into it. It is truly heart and soul. Barry Windsor-Smith has again opened himself up a little bit further as he did in his Opus books to let his fans and his critics see what he goes through to bring fine stories to print. some will have a field day and some like me will enjoy. I believe that most will enjoy and learn from it. Those participating in the field day are stuck in the "KILLBANGBOOM" world of the Images and Marvels of the industry. This is truly an enjoyable book and I for one appreciate its publication. Thus the 5 stars. Oh! The other two thirds of the proof? Pick up the Freebooters collection in August of this year and the Paradoxman collection next year! Then the pudding will be complete.

1 out of 5 stars Ech........2004-09-20

I had heard good things about Mr. Windsor-Smith's work when I read this, but I was extremely disappointed.

Most of the editorials, instead of being funny or particularly interesting, are pages upon pages of the creator angsting about how horrible his publishers are.

The comics themselves, are difficult to understand until you've read it at least twice, and the humor, supposedly 'adult', instead of being more mature is just a lot of perverted sex jokes that don't get into the more mainstream comics very often.

4 out of 5 stars The complete uncompleted "Young GODS" by BWS.......2004-01-28

Barry Windsor-Smith is my favorite "comic book artist," but his style is such that you have to put those words in quotations because we are talking about somebody who's artistic inspirations are as much Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites as Jack Kirby. To reduce this story to a single cute sentence, "Young GODS and Friends" is about deities who owe as much to the stories of Olympians and Germanic god as they do Kirby's "New Gods," placed in a rather Shakespearean situation, and confronted with a female member, Adastra, who has been spending way too much time on Earth. As he announces near the end of Chapter 1, she is back among the gods because "My sister's getting hitched to some schmuck named Prince Hero." Actually, it is Prince Heros, and there begins the tale.

What you have collected in "Young GODS and Friends" are all of the chapters of the early stages of the saga that were published in "BWS: Storyteller," up to the point where BWS suddenly stopped working when the title was cancelled by Dark Horse Comics: the second to last page is almost completely inked, but not colored, and the final page is still mostly rough pencils. Also included are: "The Pizza Story," which serves as prelude introducing Adastra on Earth dealing with one of her worshippers while trying to deliver pizzas; a series of aborted attempts at reviving the Destiny story line; "The Party," a collection of vignettes; and assorted fragments, one of which would constitute an alternative version of a key scene in "The Pizza Story." The result is the complete uncompleted "Young GODS" (The "Adastra in Africa" story published separated was originally intended for Storm of the X-Men, so I count it separately).

I had the first six episodes of "BWS: Storyteller," so it was nice to see what I had missed in being unable to track down the rest of the published issues. Original fans of the series might be disappointed in that this collection does not complete the Young GODS saga, but this was the beginning of a much longer story and BWS was laying down the initial threads of the story (for example, look at the first dozen issues of "Cerebus" and see how you could ever have anticipated the "High Society" storyline). What we have here is the beginning of something and while it is getting interesting it is not yet to the point where we are clearly on to something great.

The idea of "BWS: Storyteller" is the most important one here, because Barry Windsor-Smith's emphasis is clearly on the writing. "BWS: Storyteller" featured "The Freebooters" and "The Paradoxman" in addition to the "Young GODS," and coming up with 32-pages each month was a bit of a strain at times. For those of us who remember being disappointed when the new issue of "Conan the Barbarian" was a reprint or drawn by Gil Kane because young Barry Smith had missed another deadline, there are some pages here that show us what things would have looked like if he had rushed. Of course, "rushed" BWS is still better than what most mere mortals can do, and there are some stunning panels, usually full-page or full-spread, that serve as reminders of what this guy can do as an artist. "Young GODS and Friends" gives us an idea of what he can do as a writer.

Of course, after reading this you have to wonder if companion volumes for "The Freebooters" and "The Paradoxman." Be aware that "Young GODS and Friends" is oversized, so the reproduced pages are the same size as "BWS: Storyteller," the difference being that this is a hardcover collection. So if they come up with companion volumes we can use them to sandwich our original "BWS: Storyteller" comics between.

3 out of 5 stars Three-And-A-Half Stars for Windsor-Smith.......2004-01-28

A few years ago, when I was still collecting comics, I was lucky enough to purchase most of the run of Barry Windsor-Smith: STORYTELLER. BWS: STORYTELLER presented The Young Gods, The Paradoxman, and The Freebooters, three original series written and drawn by Windsor-Smith. I had been a Windsor-Smith since his days as Barry Smith at Marvel comics. I once even owned his infamous debut in the Uncanny X-Men (let's just say his art has come a long, long way from those days).

BSW:STORYTELLER collected several ongoing series by Windsor-Smith, including one known as the "Young Gods." On it's surface it seemed highly derivative of Jack Kirby's "Thor" for Marvel, as well as his "New Gods" and "The Forever People of Supertown" for DC. But that was part of the trick to it all, at least I think it was. You were suppose to think Kirby and then watch as Windsor-Smith put his own little twists on the whole concept of beings who were considered gods.

These were gods who were, as one editorial put it: "sexy, ribald, politically incorrect, and outrageously funny."

The story begins on the eve of the wedding of Prince Heros, a somewhat reluctant groom, who decides he needs to go off carousing one more time before he is forced to settle down. He and his cousin, Strangehands, set out for a little adventure engaging in "dragon chasing." Also along for the ride is the lovely but foul-mouthed Princess Adastra, sister of the bride-to-be. Things don't go quite as planned, of course.

Unfortunately, the series was never completed in its original run. But, this volume collects issues one through 9 plus the previously unpublished issues 10 and 11. It also adds new material created for this edition. Windsor-Smith is not for everyone's tastes, but if you are a fan, this is a must have for your collection.

          Book Description

A star athlete at his high school, Bobby Franklin faces graduation with anything but certainty. Should he choose ministry over his beloved baseball? Should he earn a college degree-or skip school and try to make it in baseball-or marry his girlfriend, Ashley? As a Christian, he wonders how he can know specifically what God wants him to do.

Do you know any students like Bobby who have major decisions to make and would like to know God's will? Do you know what to tell them? Do you know how to help? During their search for God's will in their life, there is one thing for sure they could use, a "911 friend"-a friend who "…is always loyal and a brother [and sister who] is born to help in time of need" (Prov. 17:17).

Through the aid of a gripping true-to-life story, Josh McDowell along with Ed Stewart offers biblical insights and practical instruction on how to find God's specific will in one's life. But more importantly, you will learn how to become a true source of encouragement and guidance to someone wanting to know God's will. This book is designed for you to read first and then give to your friend.

And if you are that person facing some major issues in life, you will discover key scriptural principles to making tough personal decisions. But more than that, you will find that God really does care about the details of your life and wants what's best for you and so does your friend-most likely the person who gave you this book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for young teens!.......2002-02-12

I'm a college student who knows her way around the Bible, and I still found this study to be enlightening (not to mention more fun than all that dreary adult stuff). The focus is on developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Kevin Johnson has a rather unique style which is usually humorous (like a lesson titled "I Wanna Be a Sheep")but can get cloying (i.e. misspelling words to seem cooler). Behind the joking around, there's sound teaching which gets the reader into a Bible passage, complete with all the study notes, definitions, cultural explanations, etc. to understand and go deeper. There's also journaling and suggestions for life application, and stodgy youth pastors will like the discussion questions and pre-printed Bible verse memorization cards in the back, keyed to the lessons. I'd also recommend this to new believers who are still getting bogged down with all that symbolism and terminology, but don't want a hyper-serious doctrine course. I'm definitely going to order more books in this series.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-01-19

This is the ideal book if you want to show kids how great a relationship with Christ can be. I work at K-Life of Waco, TX and kids are excited every meeting because this book creates a fun way to learn about God. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Resource.......2001-07-29

I absolutely love this book. It doesn't give all of the commentary, but just a straight forward indexing of verses. I personalize my devotions by looking at verses that apply to what is going on in my life today. Since the book was given to me, I have found it to be an awesome resource for my walk with God. The version isn't the greatest, but it gives me a place to start looking for the verses on the particular topic that I want.
