Amazingly wonderful cards!!.......2007-10-10
Actually this is Darlene, Jeff's wife.
This is the first time I have ever ordered any kind of oracle cards from anyone. I don't know exactly what I expected, but on the very first reading I gave for myself, after shuffling the cards and turning up the three cards for the three-card spread, I was absolutely amazed at the accuracy of the messages on the cards, and how they pertained absolutely to the question/concern I was thinking about. And, to top that off, the very first card I turned over was Archangel Raphael, my very, very personal favorite archangel whom I feel especially close to, and to whom I "speak" to so often for help or protection or guidance... that alone just blew me away! So, I guess I must say... "Angels, you sure do have my attention now!!" I also received the Ascended Masters cards, and had another amazing response with them..... but that's for another review. :)
Excellent Work of Art with Angels' Influences/ visionary prophet daniel.......2007-09-28
I enjoyed Janet Boyer's review of this deck which has my agreement fully.I have 3 Angel decks by Dr. Doreen Virtue with good purposes professionally.I use the Healing for normal reversed cards bail-outs;Saints/Angels for those who I sense need Saints also; and Archangels when I need to import more strength to the readings of 78 card decks. This includes my use in Angel Readings as well. I will digress a moment: A professional reader(our Supervisor)gave us our First Angel Reading from which the angels divinations came perfectly true in reality! He gave us the deck to use in our readings ever since for my wife then(my soulmate is with them now!).,,,Rest your faith with the Angels' messages as they are your small, still voice within you telling you wisdom to follow your intuition. Acquire this deck for strength in your readings......Blessings....
Nice.......2007-08-10
Shuffled once, shuffled twice got the same cards, shuffled the next morning and got the same cards again...very accurate.
Wonderful Guidance with the Archangel Oracle Cards!.......2007-08-10
I highly recommend Doreen Virtue's cards. I recently purchased my fourth set of Archangel Oracle cards. I kept one for myself and gave the other three as gifts. These cards are right to the point and correct. They have been a big help in my life, an answer to many prayers for me. I was first introduced to "Messages from My Angels", also a Doreen Virtue issue as a gift from my dear friend. It is amazing as to the messages, whether you are asking about what path to follow with a loved one you are having difficulty with or even an everyday question. These are a must have and they are so true to life! You will know your Angels are guiding you! I start out my day using these cards!
Achangel Oracle Cards.......2007-05-13
Beautiful artwork and lovely colors. Great for when you are going through a stressful time. I always seem to draw just the "right" card when I need a lift. The upbeat nature of the cards and positive "take the high road" messages can be useful whether you "believe" or not. Coincidence or serendipity or angels...if it works, use it!
Book Description
Who is Saint-Germain? Kuan Yin? Which archangel or ascended master do I invoke for a specific problem? Can I work with goddess energies, along with the angels?
These are the types of questions that Doreen Virtue regularly receives from her readers and workshop attendees. Finding no comprehensive book that listed New Age and Old Age deities, Doreen knew that she needed to write one herself.
Archangels and Ascended Masters is a thoroughly researched book in a lively encyclopedia format, listing 77 divinities from Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Asian, Babylonian, Tibetan, Buddhist, Celtic, Theosophical, New Age, Catholic, Cabalistic, Jewish, and Christian roots. Doreen carefully studied and wrote about the history of each deity, what role they serve today, how they can help us with specific life problems, and how to call upon each one.
Doreen spent time in communication with each divinity to ensure that the being was reachable, and to discover the essence of his or her personality and current dealings with the worldand within these pages, she includes a channeled message or impression from each of the ascended masters and archangels. Many of her channelings were conducted at power points throughout the world, such as Stonehenge in England; the Irish coast; Kona, Hawaii; and the New Zealand rain forest.
A comprehensive chart lists a number of life situations, such as Addictions, Finding a Soulmate, Emergency Money, Healing Physical Illness, and various personal and family concerns. Beneath each topic is the list of whom to call upon when dealing with that particular challenge. Doreen also includes prayers to call upon multiple divinities for specific issues such as "increased clairvoyance" and "resolving conflict."

Great introductional book.......2007-10-08
A lot of respectable higher beings are presented in this book. Very brief introductions and prayers but still a good path to associating yourself with a new Master or Angel.
Welcome addition.......2007-09-10
This book is a welcome addition to my libary of spiritual books. I was glad to receive this one, with my growing curiosity about Jesus and all the other ascended masters. Doreen Virtue presents the information in the style of an encyclopedia, just not as clinical. For each ascended master and archangel, she discusses their history, other names they're known by, their area(s) of expertise, a channeled message from the divinity or diety and how to invoke (or invite) them into your situation.
At the back of the book, situations are listed with the appropriate ascended master or archangel listed. For example, under Meditation, she lists the ones who can help you with meditation. There's also a section on Prayers, where you can find a prayer that addresses a specific situation or request. I noticed that for Healing there was a prayer for healing yourself and a pet but there wasn't one for sending healing to another person. But I later I was glad to find under "Archangel Rafael" an invocation for sending healing to someone.
I do recommend this book for those interested in learning about and getting acquainted with the ascended masters and archangels. You never know. One of them may be at work in your life right now.
Beautiful.......2007-08-30
I found this book to be very imformative , Well written. But then again I love Doreen Virtue.
Enjoyable Reference Work.......2007-08-22
I picked up this book after having received Doreen Virtue's Goddess Oracle Cards, and the Ascended Master Oracle Cards. I loved them, but had never read anything that Ms. Virtue had written and wanted her perspectives. Seeing as how I had the Ascended Master cards, I figured this was a fitting accompanying text.
I really enjoyed it, although it was more an encyclopedic reference work than a "book" book. It did offer a refreshing way of looking at this rather New Age material, that didn't seem to light or watered down, but made it accessible to many people coming from many different paths. In fact Doreen made a conscious effort to not get into any one particular paradigm's vocabulary, so that anyone could understand where she was coming from and where she was going with the information. This was extremely helpful and made reading it enjoyable.
I especially enjoyed her entries on the Archangels, as they really brought these personalities into focus and made them seem very real and accessible. I do wish that more of the New Age Ascended Masters that she included in this book had made it to her Ascended Masters Oracle Cards - but I'm happy to have the information in any case.
I will definitely be getting more of her works in the future.
Who's Who of the Spiritual World.......2007-04-23
This is more like an encyclopedia of Who's Who in the spiritual world. As you've probably read, Doreen Virtue is a clairvoyant doctor of psychology who works with angels, archangels, ascended masters and the elementals. The book lists 77 of these and it is non-discriminatory. There are beings listed who are Christian, Jewish, New Age, Babylonia, Catholic, Celtic, etc.
So, let's say you heard about "Saint-Germain" in your readings and want to know just who he is. Page 153 to 156 explains all about him, including that he is NOT a saint in the Catholic sense and should not be confused with Saint Germaine Cousin or Saint Germanus, who ARE Catholic saints. Anyway, it tells you all abou him. It continues by giving a list of what he helps with (psychic protection, life purpose, courage, direction, etc.) Then it gives a suggested invocation/prayer.
Like said, there are 77 of these. A few at random are: Moses (Judeo-Christian), Sanat Kumara (Hindu, Vedic, New Age), Maat (Egypt), Merlin (Celtic), Melchizedek (Judaism, New Age), Sedna (Inuit/Eskimo), Archangel Uriel (Judeo-Christian), and many more. There are several indexes in the back to look up the way you want to. You can also look up "global peace" or "protection for musicians".

Excellent Series on the Archangels.......2007-02-23
I generally am not a big fan of Llewellyn publishing and all there books on Wicca, and Wiccanizing everything from Brujeria, Hoodoo, Santeria, and Curanderismo, which sadly they have done many times before, and have sold millions of copies to readers who don't know any better and believe any junk they read. But out of all the authors who publish under Llewellyn I give my respects to one of them, Mr. Richard Webster, although I do not like all his books, he has published some good ones.
In his new four book series on Communicating with the Archangels, as a person born and raised in the tradition of Brujeria and Espiritismo most of this knowledge was passed down and taught to me from early childhood, and was part as still is a part of daily life, as breathing and eating. Although most of the subjects on the book deal with Stories as re-told by the author, both personal and stories of others, and rituals, meditations and bringing these powerful forces into your life, I would have to highly recommend all four books, for anyone who is interested in learning and adapting these ancient powerful Supreme Beings into your life.. No matter if you practice Voodoo, Brujeria, Curanderismo, or don't practice any form of religion at all but are a spiritual person looking to bring these positive forces into your life, then read these books, you will not be disappointed. I have to actually say bravo to Llewellyn for publishing these books, and hopefully they keep publishing more books on other traditions without trying to Wiccanize everything.
To begin the series I would start with the book Spirit Guides & Angel Guardians: Contact Your Invisible Helpers, also published by Llewelyn and the author Richard Webster.
From then I would recommend going on to Michael: Communicating with the Archangel for Guidance & Protection.
The second book should be, Raphael: Communicating with the Archangel for Healing & Creativity. Traditionally the Angel of healing as in the Old Testiment there is the story of Raphael healing Sarah and Tobit as they travel to Tobias.
The third book in the series is Gabriel: Communicating with the Archangel for Inspiration & Reconciliation. Although many people will disagree with the order stating that the book on Rafael and Gabriel are mixed, this would depend on tradition. Traditionally Saint Gabriel was the Angel that visited Mary and foretold of her pregnancy with Jesus, as well as to the Shepard Joseph. The reason people will disagree with the order is because they say that Gabriel is the Angel that rules the element of Air, and Communication, which makes sense. But to many traditions he is seen as the Angel that rules Water, as he fortold of the pregnancy of Mary, The Holy Infant child Jesus being in the womb, which is associated with the element of Water. The books work fine in the order they are, but as one studies further, this tradition works well, or can be rearranged, with further study.
The final book in the series, which I have not read yet, is Uriel: Communicating with the Archangel for Transformation & Tranquility. But should also be included in the series. All the books go hand in hand.
Pretty good indeed........2005-02-19
I also was happy to see a book like this on the market. Im not a big fan of Llewyllyn publications finding most of their stuff kinda fluffy, but this book seemed to be about something so I bought it. Its nice to see a book about Michael out of the strictly christian context. This book contains wisdom about Michael which can be utalized by most anyone in any faith. Saint Micael is viewed as a powerfull Amparo, a protector in Curanderisimo and Latino Folk religion. Bringing this powerfull Santo to more people is a blessing. Check it out, its worth the cover price which I have to say is quite reasonable.
Hopefully the first of many!.......2004-12-17
I was so excited when I saw this title would be available. I'm not a traditional religious person, but I've been trained to call on archangels like Michael, Elijah, and Gabriel, and have done so for years when I am in trouble.
Even if your religions are alternative, or a mix of beliefs, I would strongly encourage this book as a reference. Michael is a sacred and powerful entity, or energy, and is said to help and protect us from many situations we can't seem to manage ourselves.
The first section I went to in the book, suggested writing a letter to Michael. I've been having huge personal problems for months, regarding a death, a breakup, so many unresolved and unexplained things. So I thought, "what the heck?" The book encourages you to write to Michael as her were a close friend, because he really is. You feel his presence while writing it, get it all on paper, seal and address the envolope, let it sit overnight, and then during a candle ritual, you read the letter out loud. If your requests start to eventually come true, you are reminded to do a thank you ritual to Michael as well.
Not to be confused with one of those odd newspaper ads, where St. "Whoever" will grant your wishes if you publish this 3 times...this is a way to be intimate and spiritual with Michael as your personal guide. Learn how to protect and forgive others, do a karma release, invoke Michael into your dreams as a teacher. Michael is the one to call upon when your car breaks down, or you need help for a friend.
Rumor has it, that coming soon is the Llewellyn release about archangel Gabriel, the angel of truth! I hope this is the beginning of a long series, the first book on Michael is a great start and very affordable.

Set in a society founded as an egalitarian utopia but now tainted with vices and inequity, Sharon Shinn's love story is plotty and calamitous. Rachel and Gabriel have nothing in common beyond wishing that the god Jovah had ordained they wed other people, yet they must cooperate in singing a mass to the god on the occasion of Gabriel's elevation to Archangel. Upright Gabriel has enemies among both mortal and angelic peoples who prefer to risk world destruction over his restoration of the old order.
Customer Reviews:
The first book to be written in the series-like all her novels it's pretty good.......2007-08-07
"Archangel" was the first to be written in Sharon Shinn's now famous Samaria series, in which a group of angels keep the peace on a planet that was populated by a God by using music to pray, ask for medicine and prove to the God that all are in harmony. This book shows the change of power from one Archangel to the next and a growing conflict over two ethnic groups, one of which believes it can enslave the other with impunity.
Having read several of Sharon Shinn's novels now, I can say with a degree of certainty that "Archangel" is pretty typical of her writing style. We have a scientific novel in which the background is never really explained, a hero and heroine who refuse to fall in love with each other until the last moment (and that's after very little exposure) and of course, our hero is undeniably noble.
That said this book is also typical of the author's writing style in that it is comforting somehow, has a relatively small cast of characters and is immensely likeable.
Like every book of hers I've read so far, four stars.
Childish, juvenile heroine to the MAX.......2007-07-21
My first and inevitably my last novel by Sharon Shinn, ARCHANGEL explores a girl's faith in a story with strong Christian overtones. A fantasy novel preaching about having faith, there's a lot of bickering (between hero & heroine) in ARCHANGEL. ARCHANGEL's world is a sort of a religious utopia, and its grand city of Luminaux represents the height of the Utopian principles in all aspects: economy, social position, politics, etc. Every man in Luminaux goes to the job he loves, there's no such thing as a menial job in Luminaux. Through the nomadic, yet persecuted, gypsy-like Edori, the Edori customs and ways represent the height of a free, giving race; the Edori are perfect, all of their people good and wholesome beyond belief.
ARCHANGEL views all rich merchants in a very evil light, summarily condemning all of them and religiously denouncing all of their capitalistic practices to gain wealth. Simplistically, beautiful people are either power-hunger mongrels (Raphael) or ditzy dolts (Judith), except for our handsome hero Gabriel of course. "Metaphorical and ethical speculation was wasted on the literal-minded (and beautiful) Judith," Gabriel notes at one point.
There's 3 provinces in ARCHANGEL's world, with 3 angels to lead each province and an archangel which oversees everyone (included as 1 of the 3 "leading" angels). The archangel term lasts 20 years and oracles deduce from God the next chosen Archangel and his Angelica (or Angelico). Like most fantasy novels written by authors interested in romance, you have some sort of a soul-mate storyline and also similar to other other novels, you have the hero accepting it and quickly embracing his soul-mate (angelica) while the heroine very reluctant for the majority of the novel. In ARCHANGEL in fact, the heroine Rachel is resistant until the very last page of this 390-page superior paperback. There really isn't any warring factions or violence in ARCHANGEL's world as everyone lives in awe and fear of the Almighty God. The angels' power? Basically they pray in hymns and song to entreat god to help effect weather changes. Rain for farmers during a drought, for instance. The hero Gabriel is the most competent of the singing angels. There's plenty of concerts in the novel if you haven't guessed already by the way.
I couldn't stand the story's religious preaching, I couldn't stand Rachel's character, and I couldn't stand anything about the other plots.
I had high hopes though. I liked how the heroine Rachel wasn't a virgin, I liked how she didn't swoon and melt at the hero's touch (only at his singing in this case), and I liked how Gabriel was very virtuous, and not the notorious libertine we find from historical romances. In case you're interested, there's no passionate scenes here, only goes as far as kissing.
Rachel acts pretty superior and childish throughout, it's as though she alone understands the trials and tribulations of the poor and underprivileged. Anyone with a modicum of wealth or ambitions for fortune in Sharon Shinn's world are shunned as evil and power hungry. Certainly, this generalization holds true everywhere. Rachel flaunts her Edori heritage as superior to everyone and everything else. She's very juvenile and frosty with her husband too. By my count, Gabriel apologized to her at least 4 times for things he didn't know or understand about her, and he always shows her kindness and affection. Rachel reacts in her obligatory I-art-holier-than-thou attitude. When Rachel walks in on Gabriel and Judith, she secures Gabriel's promise later on that he has never slept with and never will sleep with Judith. They had begun fighting for a while, but this promise seems to have placated her. Inexplicably, they transition into a more amiable conversation. The amiable transition didn't follow after a heated discussion where both accused the other of infidelities. The author felt the need for Gabriel to comfort Rachel and dispel her misgivings, but not the other way around.
And it's Rachel who flirts with Obadiah, and the Edori Isaac and Adam. It's Rachel who kisses Isaac and Adam. I actually wanted to see Rachel get busy with Isaac & Adam and reject Gabriel. At least then Gabriel would be free of her. Lord.
The immature adolescence Rachel so exuberantly sponsors ranges to levels far beyond my comprehension. Get this. At this end, she's beyond petty and vindictive. Gabriel is aware Rachel's most fervent "justice" is to see the entire city of Semerroh destroyed. When it's clear that just such a feat will come to fruition if she will not sing, she uses that knowledge to test Gabriel's love and devotion to her instead, spiting him for not believing in her. When she threatens the city and its people if Gabriel doesn't promise to leave her alone, Gabriel quickly acquiesces to her ludicrous demands. After, she cries thinking how she wanted Gabriel to risk destroying hundreds of people so he would say he would rather have her instead. Despite telling her before that the only angelica he would ever accept by his side would be Rachel, and that he wouldn't choose another angelica had she died. Despite telling her that he would always come back to her if he ever leaves. Despite comforting her and protecting her, despite sheltering her under his sensitive wings no one is supposed to touch.
Man, I've never seen a character so selfish, so childish, so juvenile, so immaturely spiteful as ARCHANGEL's Rachel. And she hates Gabriel for choosing to save hundreds of lives instead of be with her, an ultimatum she herself lays down. Are you serious? Is that even a choice? That's no choice at all, any likable hero would sacrifice himself and his beloved in a heartbeat if not doing so meant the death to thousands of other innocents. There is nothing romantic about this retarded "choice" Rachel tests Gabriel with.
After all this, Rachel stays away for months traveling with the Edori and then when she finally decides she wants Gabriel back, she tests him yet again. She makes Gabriel with his broad wings walk through iron stakes on the top of a mountain he can't land on. Yep. Childish. Juvenile. Petty. Vindictive. Adolescent.
It is the Will of Landru---oops, Jovah!.......2007-07-19
If you've watched the original Star Trek series episodes "The Return of the Archons" or "The Apple" then I think you'll pretty much get the plot of "Archangel" (I'm not giving the plot away since the first page of the book, underneath the blurbs, has a crisp summary of the planet Samaria's prehistory--which, by the way, is nowhere to be found in the actual novel.) I don't think that's what caused my deep sense of déjà vu while reading this novel, though. All the way through "Archangel" I kept thinking, "I've already read this." But I hadn't. The déjà vu was caused by a combination of all the romance novels I'd read over the years, plus the Star Trek episodes where Landru and Vaal reigned supreme over planets of stranded humans gone decadent and taken to running around in pilgrim outfits or too much white eye make-up and shouting, "It is the Will of Landru!" (or Vaal).
What kept me reading Sharon Shinn's novel was not the hackneyed plot, but the characters of Gabriel and Rachel, especially Rachel, who is strong but not at all lovable. In fact she is a virago. When she doesn't get her way, she screams and kicks and sometimes resorts to sarcasm. I really didn't understand why everybody loved Rachel, but they did. I did understand why she was the way she was. She had a hard life. Her parents were murdered. The tribe that rescued her was slaughtered a few years later. She was sold into slavery. Just when it seemed as though she might make a new life for herself, Rachel was forced into marriage with the new archangel-to-be, as decreed by the god, Jovah.
The archangel-to-be, Gabriel is a hunk with wings, who lacks only a sense of humor to be perfect. It is obvious to everyone that he is going to be a good ruler. His only enemies are the current archangel, Raphael and his evil minions, plus the merchants who grew rich on the slave trade and other unsavoury capitalistic practices that Raphael encouraged.
Why doesn't Jovah strike Raphael and the other evil-doers dead? Well, that's part of the plot plus Rachel's adventures in avoiding her new husband.
Sharon Shinn writes about a passionate, flawed woman who rises above the fate the demi-gods of her world planned for her. Although sometimes deploring Rachel's treatment of Gabriel, I read "Archangel" straight through to the end. This author conjures up a fascinating world. I can only hope that Gabriel is long dead and at peace by the time the inevitable sequel rolls around where the Samarians discover that 'Jovah' is really a spaceship and not a god.
Try it you might like it...........2007-06-02
Okay...the first book that I read was "The Angel Seeker". So I was definitely "out of order" when I started reading this series. All of the books in the Samaria series are pretty much the same. In my opinion the best one is "Angel Seeker". If you are going to try to read them since the same characters are not in every book but they are all set in the same location you should read "Angelica" first then "Archangel", "Angel Seeker", "Jovah's Angel", then "Alleluia" files. The stories stretch over 600 years of Samarian Angel history. You really don't realize that it is so much of a sci-fi series until "Jovah's Angel", where (not trying to spoil the thing for you) you find out that these people were actually space travelers who landed on the planet and populated it after leaving their dying planet. I did like that even though it is actually more of a romance book that it did not have any "gratuitous sex scenes" which made for a very nice change. But mostly the plots are the same...Angel loves mortal has trouble getting mortal to love them....Mortal loves Angel has trouble getting Angel to love them...really no tricky plot twists here. I think I will read some of Sharon Shinn's other books, also.
Good. If you like Chick Lit........2007-05-07
I generally steer clear of the NYT page-turners, but this one was a snoozer. In all, fairness, it is fairly well written, but it was not what I was looking for.
There were no plot twists. The plot was simple, sweet, straightforward, and fairly predictable.
While the book revolved around politics and religion, I didn't feel that the author really asked any thought provoking questions. Do you believe in God? yes or no.
The characters were beautifully developed if that what you seek in a book.
Basically, this is a love story of two people who didn't choose each other.
Nothing new.

Archangel is a remarkably literate novel--and simultaneously a gripping thriller--that explores the lingering presence of Stalin amidst the corruption of modern-day Russia. Robert Harris (whose previous works include Enigma and Fatherland) elevates his tale by choosing a narrator with an outsider's perspective but an insider's knowledge of Soviet history: Fluke Kelso, a middle-aged scholar of Soviet Communism with a special interest in the dark secrets of Joseph Stalin. For years, rumors have circulated about a notebook that the aging dictator kept in his final years. In a chance encounter in Moscow, Kelso meets Papu Rapava, a former NKVD guard who claims that he was at Stalin's deathbed and says that he assisted Politburo member Beria in hiding the black oilskin notebook just as Stalin was passing. Before Kelso can get more details, Rapava disappears, but the scholar is energized by the evidence Rapava has provided. As Kelso begins to pursue his historical prize, however, his investigation ensnares him in a living web of Stalinist terror and murder. It soon becomes clear that the notebook is the key to a doorway hiding many secrets, old and new.
Harris's understanding of Soviet and modern Russian is impressive. The novel rests on a seamless blend of fact and fiction that places real figures from Soviet history alongside Kelso and his fictional colleagues. Especially disturbing are the transcripts from interrogations and the excerpt from Kelso's lectures on Stalin; the documents provide chilling evidence to support Kelso's claim: "There can now be no doubt that it is Stalin rather than Hitler who is the most alarming figure of the twentieth century." --Patrick O'Kelley

A maelstrom of intrigue, murder, secrets and history.......2007-08-04
British author Harris' literary thriller is a compelling, suspenseful novel of contemporary Russia and its Stalinist legacy. The narrative rests on a dangerous foundation of shifting momentums; control of events slipping from one ruthless character to another, paralleling the fate of Russia itself.
As the novel opens Papu Rapava, one of brutal Beria's bodyguards, recounts the night of Stalin's fatal stroke to a foreigner who plies him with drink and who Rapava addresses as "boy." "By this time the girl had stopped screaming," Rapava recalls, noting that the call had come about 2 a.m. and he had been the sole guard as was customary "when there was a girl."
The interviewer, as drunk as Rapava, is "Fluke Kelso," middle-aged former Oxford professor of Soviet history, in Moscow for a conference of historians, desperate for a book to revive his stagnating reputation. His excitement grows as Rapava describes a macabre scene: he and Beria rifling Stalin's paralyzed but conscious body for keys to his private safe, seizing his secret papers, abandoning Stalin to his fate. In the pre-dawn hours Rapava, sweating at the prospect of his own death, digs a grave-like hole. But only Stalin's papers are buried and when Beria is executed several months later, Rapava keeps the secret, which he alone still holds.
Despite his mounting excitement, Kelso is sick in the bathroom and Rapava flees during his absence, leaving no proof of his story and only a discarded nightclub matchbook as a clue to his whereabouts. A set-up, one of Kelso's respected colleagues assures him. A set-up to extract money from the wealthy foreigner. But Kelso, in the grip of hangover as well as ambition, can't let it go.
The details of Rapava's story take Kelso to the Lenin Library, where tantalizing confirmations lead him to confront the murderous Mamantov, a former KGB officer and reactionary Stalinist. Heedlessly, typically, Kelso does not reflect on the possible repercussions of this meeting but simply blunders on.
While the historian stumbles feverishly through Beria's former residence, now an abandoned embassy, Mamantov escapes his official surveillance and disappears. When Kelso finds proof - a disturbed plot of dirt that matches Rapava's description of the burial place - his own inertia plunges him into the murk of Moscow nightlife where career women moonlight as prostitutes, salting away dollars, Rapava's daughter among them.
Kelso becomes a catalyst for events which spiral out of his control. His headlong yet skillful search ignites the fears and ambitions of various splintered Russian power groups - police, state security, the heart of government and the forces of revolution.
Harris' ("Enigma," "Fatherland") skillfully drawn characters appear real without being deeply complex. Kelso himself is a crafty, misanthropic, venal sort, but not unsympathetic. While you can't root for his success, you don't want him to die.
Combining the unexpected with the brutal and crafty to build a complex, atmospheric plot culminating in a surreal, heart-stopping chase through the frozen hinterlands, Harris constructs an equally surreal but convincing picture of the Stalinist fervor that lives on in Russia, a strange, creepy nostalgia for a dictator who killed between 45 and 66 million people.
And without letting it escape him, Harris manages to secure his plot in a maelstrom of murderers, mobs, the frightening power of unwitting international television, the sweep of historical forces and the harsh reality of post-soviet daily life. No simple feat.
The Cult of Stalin Redux.......2007-04-14
Robert Harris puts academic has-been Fluke Kelso at the center of a tall tale with a solid foundation in the 'wild west' days of post-Soviet Russia. Hookers, mafia, a publicity-mad newshound, former Soviet tough guys, and modern Russian cops all play roles in this page-turner that delves back to the cult of Stalin - and brings that cult into today. The scariest thing about this book is that it's based partially in the reality that Stalin remains a shockingly popular figure in Russia today, which also lends the book an uncomfortable veneer of plausibility.
I've read three of Harris's works now - Pompeii, Imperium, and Archangel. Contrary to some other reviewers, I enjoyed this book more than Pompeii and found it to be more of page-turner than Imperium (I thought Imperium was a bit more of a serious book - closer to literature than mass market paperback like Archangel).
I suppose the ending, criticized by others as implausible, does require one to perform a sizeable suspended disbelief, but if you pull that off, the ending hangs together. It's just a creepy lot of fun to see how Professor Kelso is going to get out of this mess and the crazy company he's keeping.
Highly recommended.
Stalinism and modern Russia.......2007-04-04
Good page turning novel, gripping mystery interspersed with historical fact and melded with some speculative fiction. Much like his first novel, Fatherland, the author is entirely literate on World War II era history. Fatherland speculates on German society had Hitler won, whereas Archangel speculates if Stalin had an heir.
Fluke Kelso is a downtrodden Russian history specialist ostracized for his unconventional views on Russian & Soviet history. While in modern Russia Fluke meets an old NKVD guard with intimate knowledge of Stalin's black oil skin notebook containing an explosive secret. For four days we follow Fluke along with an American reporter as they try to recover this notebook and unlock the secret.
Harris demonstrates the mixed feelings modern day Russians feel toward Stalin's reign of terror. Much of the country still embraces Communism and venerates the dictator to this day. The contrast between Stalin's era and the modern day Russia is an integral part of the story as Russia struggles to adapt to globalization and capitalism.
Surprisingly good: A story about a Soviet Messiah.......2007-03-25
After reading "Enigma" last year, I was surprised to see that Harris can actually write an interesting story. Some of the same flaws in Enigma are found here too in Archangel. The most obvious flaw is continuity. Rapava tells a story and sometimes it's hard to determine if the story is taking place in the present or in the past, on the night of Stalin's death. Fortunately, once the story continues after the Rapava's testimony, the story takes a more definite plot.
Russia is described as a depressing land, with despair and corruption overflowing the streets of Moscow. I think it's unfair to think of Moscow that way. After all, we Americans feared the Russians for decades, so now that the Cold War is over, there's no reason to deplore each other anymore.
Stalin's death has always been a mystery kept under the strictest secrecy just as Reagan's progressive madness during his prolonged presidency. Harris really committed himself to the story, and although depressing, it's also interesting. Kelso goes to great lengths to discover the mysteries written in a diary attributed to Stalin himself, and by doing that, he goes to Archangel and meets Stalin's son and successor. Now, that's good storytelling! A Soviet Messiah comes from he frozen Artic to save the Motherland and make her again the feared world power Stalin envisioned.
The storyline was well written although al little shaking at the beginning, excellent topic for a novel, and well crafted as a mystery novel. Next book, "Fatherland."
P.S. The color yellow appears repeatedly throughout the entire novel: yellow snow, yellow clouds, yellow river, yellowish sky, water and air. Does it have a meaning? Just curious.
Nowhere close to "Pompeii"..........2007-02-14
If you are considering this item because you have enjoyed the author's excellent "Pompeii: A Novel" - forget it. This book is not only quite inferior to "Pompeii" in terms of the quality of research and the breadth of the story, but also the "Archangel" is - simply put - rather boorish, dragged-out and disjoint. Considering the number of half-developed characters, the number of half-cooked sub-plots completely irrelevant to the story, and a rather illogical ending, a reader cannot shake the feeling that this book was supposed to be twice as long, but the author himself got completely bored of it all half along the way, retroactively inserted a dozen events to make a quick conclusion possible, and abandoned his work.
Book Description
JFK is in the Oval Office. "Love Me Do" is climbing the charts. And in West Berlin, a wealthy ex-black marketeer, the Dane, is offering a stolen spy satellite for sale. Nothing unusual there, except the asking price: half a billion dollars. Too much for any satellite—unless it's Hitler's legendary, long-lost Project Archangel.
Archangel, it's rumored, is a device capable of shifting the balance of the Cold War. To find it, Mallory and Morse fly to the Monaco Grand Prix and infiltrate the Dane's entourage: a pair of lovely and vicious blonde twins, a ravishing Polish giantess with a taste for movie magazines, and an American ex-mercenary with quiet eyes and hands like stone. The Dane is both a perfect host and a savage killer, and has already done one of the Consultancy's agents to death. But their greatest peril may come from the long-buried passions of the icily beautiful Laura Morse. . . .

'60's setting adds to story.......2007-07-17
Wow! I have not read a good 60's-type spy thriller since Ian Fleming died. Forest DeVoe Jr. (pen name for Max Phillips) has captured the flavor of the genre that brought us favorites like James Bond and Travis McGee.
The story is set in the early sixties. It find DeVoe's main protagonists Mallory and Morse in another sticky situation against a foe that has all the money and power that little- known, but nefarious covert operations possessed when the Cold War was at its height.
Mallory and Morse work for a shadowy group called the Consultancy that is on the side of good. It contracts with governments both friendly and adverse to the United States in keeping the world a safer place in those trying times of mutually assured destruction.
The story is expertly set around the Grand Prix racing season and its opening contest on the streets of Monaco. The world's rich and famous and bold and beautiful are gathered to watch the racers defy death on the narrow streets of Monaco. At the same time, Mallory and Morse play a deadly game of chicken with their foe, the eccentric figure of Arne Jespers, known in underworld arms dealing circles as "The Dane."
Through his worldwide network of contacts, Jespers has just offered for sale, at the price of $1 billion, a new satellite space technology first conceived by Hitler, stolen by Russia, and then stolen by Jespers. The technology will be sold to the highest bidder within a week. Mallory and Morse are contracted to recover the satellite and bring it into the hands of the West. If that can't be done, they are to destroy it at all cost to prevent it from falling into the hands of the bidders, all of whom would use the satellite to trump the nuclear arsenals of any country in the world.
Eye of the Archangel is an extremely engaging story that has a plausible scenario and is technically sound. Set in the days before cell phones, fax machines and the Internet, one wonders how the world's intelligence agencies actually got anything done!
Armchair Interviews says: Great vacation read. Pack this one with you wherever you plan to go.
Lousy proofreading spoils it for me.......2007-06-17
I'm a few chapters in, but I don't know if I can stand to continue, despite excellent detail in the first chapter, at least. The problem is the incompetent editing/proofreading. Three times already "lay" is printed where "laid" would be correct, as in "She lay her palms on his chest." Then a rendezvous is for 15:30 on p. 41 & for 03:30 on p. 43. The last straw (so far) is utter confusion in the matter of who gets which sandwich on p. 44. These signs of incompetence, with who knows how many more to come, make it almost impossible to suspend disbelief enough to enjoy the book.
Stylish Cold-War spy duo track Nazi superweapon .......2007-04-17
Following "Into the Volcano" (now in paperback), DeVoe (aka Max Phillips, author of "Fade to Blonde") sends his stylish, dangerous spy duo, Jack Mallory and the icily beautiful Laura Morse, to the Monaco Grand Prix to track a legendary superweapon.
It's 1963 and the Cold War has never been hotter. Employed by The Consultancy (though Laura has CIA ties), the pair make a splash among the superwealthy car-racing crowd, successfully attracting the notice of "The Dane," an evil, dissolute weapons dealer offering the Archangel satellite for a cool half billion.
Nobody quite knows what the Nazi-era Archangel project will do, but at that price it will undoubtedly shift the world balance of power. Mallory and Morse get themselves invited to the party - which includes lots of lewd and lethal women - and start snooping.
This homage to James Bond is snappy, campy and clever, though the middle is longer on style than substance. But Morse's lust for rare and fast cars is infectious and the Swiss Alps action scenes are breathlessly cinematic. A fun read.
Never stoops to the satirical silliness of Derek Flint or Austin Powers movies.......2007-04-10
The first half of Max Phillips' Eye of the Archangel (written under the Forrest DeVoe pseudonym) is impressive in its recreation of Monaco of 1963. Like the previous Mallory & Morse offering, Into the Volcano, the two halves of the book are set in different locales. The second half of Archangel is set in the "evil lair" of the villain in the Swiss Alps. If this makes the book sound like a 60s spy spoof, it is, but fear not, the book never stoops to the satirical silliness of Derek Flint or Austin Powers movies. In fact the villains in these first two novels are much more three-dimensional and less comic-book-like than even Ian Fleming's, though no less megalomaniacal. Mallory & Morse are like an American version of The Avengers and, in fact, the books are set during the same time period. There is also a little bit of Modesty Blaise in the character of Laura Morse and a little bit of Matt Helm in Jack Mallory. So, if you're a fan of the aforementioned characters of the 60s, I recommend this book. I enjoyed both of them every bit as much as anything that was actually written in the 60s.

The Message for Today!.......2007-05-19
I first read this book in the early '80s, and remeber how I was reassured of God's great Love for me. I passed it on to someone else, and lost track of it. Recently I rediscovered it, and I have been giving it to family and friends as gifts. Seems that everyone who reads it is amazed at the message of God's Love for us. Pastor Buck writes as if he were speaking directly to the reader. I am still amazed at the simplicity and yet great depth of this message.
Angels On Assignment.......2007-05-15
One of the most thrilling books I have ever read on Angels. Pastor Buck had to be a great pastor.
Inspirational.......2007-03-27
I was fortunate enough to hear Pastor Roland Buck in preson just weeks before he went to glory. He was just an ordinary man living his life for the Glory of God. He was used by God to reveal an extraordinary message.
Angels Look Out For the Worthy........2006-12-03
Angels are on the earth today. Roland Buck met the Angel Gabriel one early morning at 2 a.m. while out with his devoted Great Dane Queenie. My guardian angel seems to be on vacation. I sent her to Hawaii on the 9th to watch over Chuck, but she was missing in the early hour of 4:30 when a devil tried to strangle me in the laundry room. He's been here almost a year now and is allowed to carry a weapon (a walking stick with a saber hid) and has threatened others with it. Thank God, he did not bring it to the laundry when he assaulted me. My angel may have fallen in love with Chuck and adopted him to care for since I can't, but Lady Mercy was with me. I have three serious contusions and the police told me to buy a gun. But now we have mental people among us who would get off scott free if they killed an innocent person.
Angels come in many forms. I too met Gabriel named Glenn after the near-death who said he had been in the military (but looks to be a con man par excellence). The convict Caldwell put J. R. up to this attack and was asking people here if they had seen him as he needed to take care of some business. I'm just wondering how much he paid him to nearly kill me and was wanting his money back when he saw me standing there. He was worse than a bear or a wild Indian; he kept saying I will kill you. God was watching over me, that's for sure, but why didn't he send one of his male angels to deal with Boldwin. I fell on the bus and was injured badly, and now this. I need an angel to hover over me until I can get moved from this horrid place. "Heavenly Father, as a tired bird is lifted by an unexpected gust of wind and is raised to a higher altitude (Jonathan Livingstone Seagull) and soars on with new strength and energy to come and lift me in the same way. But not death! May your blessed strength surge through feelings that will energize and excite me this day. Thank You!"
There have been other accounts of angels coming to earth to save a person from his own destruction and from evil people, Ephesians 1:4-5 and Leviticus 16:6, 11-12. God has given us his word and his holy spirit because he wants the world to see us in the same way he sees us, which is looking like Jesus. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son.
Best Pro-Bible Angel "Expose" 2Date...........2005-12-27
I found nothing in Sr. Pastor Buck's accounts of angelic encounters to be in conflict with Scripture; and give his exciting look into God's military OP forces the highest recommendation; this revealing account of Michael and God's fighting forces; Gabriel and other "chief of staff" communicators, is indeed awesome and delightful; packed full of insights and life-enriching points and pointers. Pastor Buck also delves into God's throne room system including preplanning all details of all persons' lives; God's record-keeping system, etc., etc. No other book has as much inside info on angel activities; nor as wide a scope. God obviously set it all up so we eventually would pick up and use what Rev. Buck experienced to enrich our understanding of how much God loves people and recognize some of the depth of His love by peeking in on how much activity goes on behind the scenes to demonstrate his love and support for His highest level of creation: people. I believe an even far-larger audience is yet to be exposed to Rev. Buck's account; somehow this storyline is going to be multiplied exponentially in the near future to reach huge masses of people and encourage them to study and read God's ultimate message in the Holy Bible.
Like others I read the book years ago, and loaned and lost it; then when online www.shopping became possible, located another used copy here at Amazon and got back what I had lost; hanging on much tighter this time to a real keepsake item.
Get a copy if you haven't and check it out for yourself; a rare book indeed: a fascinating, exciting inside look at such things as the size, features, personality, and dress style of Michael, God's Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman of Military Operations; even including his own comments on how General Michael looks forward to arresting and "jailing" rebel Prince Lucifer at the takeover of the world system by CEO Jesus; Gabriel's communication operations to carry God's messages and instructions to people such as Daniel, Mary, Elizabeth, Paul, etc. There is so much good stuff between the covers that you never heard of before on the mechanics and details of angelic activity, that you won't want to put down the book until you learn everything Rev. Buck has to share on this most-interesting topic.

Product Description
Although there exists a vast body of scholarly work on St Michael the Archangel, this book is the first comprehensive study of the genesis and diffusion of the legends of the archangel in medieval England. Part I of this study identifies and analyses the concerns, conflicts, and roles with which St Michael is associated from scriptural and apocryphal literature through the homiletic literature of the medieval period. Part II begins with a discussion of the vernacular recensions of the popular account of the archangel's earthly interventions (BHL 5948). A close examination of the legendary accounts in Old English, Anglo-Norman, and Middle English of the archangel and his roles as guardian, intercessor, psychopomp, and warrior-angel follows. The Appendices contain the first English translation of the archangel's hagiographic foundation-myth (BHL 5948); an annotated bibliographical list and motif index of textual materials relating to the archangel; and an essay on! the iconographic representations of the archangel in medieval England.

Beautiful Book.......2007-07-01
To start with, I love the cover of Archangel Raphael, its colors, the softness of the way it was drawn, etc just beautiful.
As for the content, wow, talk about direct to the point. For a 150-page book, it packs a lot of info. And there are so many terrific exercises.
Well done, Richard Webster, well done.
Excellent Series on Archangels.......2007-02-23
Raphael is there for you.......2007-02-14
I began reading this book and was amazed at the information about the Archangel. A friend of mine recommended this book to me. I thought I knew alot about him. I like the way it is written in simple to understand language. I had a personal experience with Raphael while reading this book. I pray to him to help me pass a nursing exam, while I was taking the test there were questions I simply couldn't answer. I was feeling overwhelmed when I couldn't answer alot of the questions. I invoked him before and during my exam. I even worn his colors and had his prayer card with me. I couldn't believe that I did pass my exam. I am thankful and grateful to Raphael and God. He is excellent help to students and people in the medical profession. He helps with creativity, abundance, healing and more. Believe and you will receive too. Also get the other books written by this author, Michael, Gabriel and Uriel. Bring the angels into your life and you will see how blessed you really are. God Bless You!
A Gem for Both Christians and Pagans.......2006-08-09
This book is ideal for anyone who wishes to strengthen his or her connection to the spiritual realm. The writing is excellent. The exercises work. If your mind is clear and your intent is sincere, your heart pure, you will be blessed with the power and the presence of angels.
If you feel spiritually disconnected from whatever God you believe in, read this book. You will not regret it.
