Gave me tingles in church again ;).......2007-07-11
My priest was recanting during mass a couple of months ago, about how the great divide in the church isn't Catholic versus Protestant or Baptist, etc but the great divide is those who truly believe in the Supernatural and those who don't. This book had me feeling the tingles on my arms again at mass last week. You might think this book has nothing to do with the church, but for me, it's got me believing again. Can you imagine all the things possile if you truly believed like the characters in this book do ;)
I've found Shalex Beckwith, the only thing I've found by her is Gods or Monsters a neat title considering her family, the Clan, who are descendants from the Drakon race, may be good or may be evil, and one young woman's journey to find out the truth, to find the lost Gospel of Light. They have "mental" abilities or powers that they are born with, but without practice won't mature. Blending into modern society, those that remember, those that teach their children, those that practice can do what they believe in. Some can throw a person across the room, or located another Drakon with their mind, even talk to each other with their minds, melt snow with the heat of their hand or foot, for example.
It makes an interesting background for the twists in this love story. They even attend mass! The twist is they also have a rituals passed down through generations to match each one of the Seven Sacraments! They have to attend confession and have the soul cleansed! There are great examples between the church and witchcraft (but not witchcraft) and were all the misunderstandings probably came from. The church might say this is someone trying to paganize religion, but hey I'm Catholic and I celebrate Jesus' birth as well as Santa Claus with my children, does that make me a pagan all of a sudden? NO it doesn't and neither do I think these characters are pagan either. They simply acknowledge what their ancestors did, such as you might participate in Thanksgiving dinner, Santa Claus and the Easter bunny, while keeping faithful to the church. Maybe if the Church welcomed differences instead of being so quick as to reject them as heretics, maybe so many people wouldn't have dried up!
Though this author is fresh out of the duck pond, mind you. There may be an error here or there, but I quite enjoyed the actual story. I hope the author does a revision, because a story like this that can potentially link "the supernatural" part of the church that people have forgotten, back, is potentially life changing! This book has really made me think...
Not bad at all ;).......2007-06-11
Well I don't know anything about the Merovingian people or the law of attraction, but this was a pretty good book.
I enjoyed reading about the main character, Samantha, who seems to have as many conflicts growing into adulthood as I did, though her's are of a more magikal nature ;) I like that this is written from Samantha's point of view. I have not read a book like this before, and it was neat to be in her shoe's. To feel her heart break as she had to choose between devotion to her family and the one true love of her life. It was refreshing to relize that not everybody has the answers or that you don't have to have the answers, just be true to you. By the end of the story, I was left hoping, begging almost for Samantha to be able to just be true to herself and !&*^% everyone else.
~~~~~Just Buy It~~~~~.......2007-05-23
Anyone interested in the Merovingian Kings, the Dragon Bloodlines, or the Gospel of Judas will appreciate this heritage story told as a paranormal drama. It is also written in first person feminine... so if you are a guy, you may not be able to handle it ;) The thoughts of the main character flucuated between first person as the character and as the narrator, I personally like this style of writing. It reminds me of Quinten Tarantino.
The grammer's not terrible but you do notice an error here or there. If you are not troubled by it, you will love this book!!!
More grammatical errors than storyline.......2007-05-13
While this is a fairly good story line, I can't get past all the grammatical errors in this book. The person that edited this story should be fired. I think I am up to almost 15 pages where there is at least one very noticeable error on a page, if not more. One or two I can understand but this many is just a joke.
*****Enchanting and Spellbinding*****.......2007-04-29
Shalex Beckwith truly commits herself to this enthralling fantasy of the Dragon bloodlines whose family origins date back to the time of Jesus -mind you not Jesus himself ' Talents are passed down through bloodline and strengthened through practice as children are taught from puberty, and in rare cases birth, to manifest the energy from within oneself into the extraordinary powers that each family member possesses. Two of the family bloodlines are out of the picture at this time, with the other three families: the Clan 'Red', the Council 'Blue', and the Class 'Gold', running against each other and time as they search for lost artifacts from what seems to have once been a unified culture in the past. Taught in secrecy, these people have blended into society and continue to honor and defend his or her family quests with or without consequence. It would seem that once you are an accepted member, not just of the family, but have initiated into what once was and still is... that you are in for life.
Good Start.......2007-06-23
This is first book of the Dragonback, where Jack Morgan becomes the symbiotic host for Draycos,the poet warrior of the K'da. The story is fun for young and old. As two creatures who couldn't be more different work together to help solve each others problems. One of the most amusing parts of the story is when Jack and Draycos hide on a balcony and end up performing a magic act at an alien wedding, and they get payed for it too.
Dragon and Thief.......2007-04-04
Dragon and Thief is a book by Timothy Zahn. It was printed in the year 2003. It is the first book of three in the Dragon back series.
The mian characters are Jack Morgan and Draycos. Jack is a human boy at the age of 14. He is good at lock picking and distractions. Draycos is a K'da. A K'da is an alien species from antother galaxy. They look like human sized dragons. Draycos is a warrior poet. He can write poems and beat people up.
The story is set in the Milky Way galaxy in the future. There is one rulling power in the galaxy but some other factions work in the outer borders. There are many alien species in the galaxy.
The book starts when Draycos crash lands on a planet where Jack is hiding. When Jack goes To investigate he finds Draycos. Draycos's race needs to have a host to live, and with Jack the only one around Draycos must bond wiith Jack.Then Jack and Draycos go out to find who was responsable for crashing of Draycos's ship and save two entire races of aliens.
I would suggest this book to anyone who likes sci-fi. It would be good for teen age group and higher. I don't suggest this this book for yougher kids because there is war in the book. There is also lots of action adventure and suspense.
What is it with orphaned boys?.......2006-10-11
I don't know why, but orphaned boys get under my skin. I always want to take care of them, all the while I'm admiring their independence. Jack is no different. He's exciting to be around, wild at heart, and just now realizing that his upbringing, while giving him major skills for a life of crime, has left him a bit short in the morals department.
Enter Draycos, a highly-sensitive, highly-evolved, very moral creature with the wisdom of ages of culture and a desperate need for help. He's a great foil for Jack, a loyal friend and a noble warrior all in one. They work well together--very well.
For me, it's all about the characters and how they impact each other on this long journey they're taking to save Draycos' people from extinction. The books only get more exciting from here.
Good series, good read.
It was a great short book with a few flaws..........2006-10-04
The Book Dragon and the Thief, by Timothy Zahn, is very exciting and at times slighty predictable. Also, some parts of the book feel like you are missing information about certain characters.
Jack Morgan is the main character along with a k'da poet warrior called Draycos. Jack meets up with Draycos after a big battle that only he survived. Then they try to escape from Draycos' enemies and try to prove that Jack was framed for stealing something from the most powerful person in the galaxy. They also have to stop Draycos'enemies from destroying the rest of his race that are leaving his galaxy because of a war. As they are trying to prove that Jack wasnt the one that stole the items, when they were captured. Then they were forced to steal something on a luxury ship from the main vault.
I didnt like this book because at some parts it felt way too played out. Jack and Draycos also seemed to run into trouble at every turn. Lastly, i didnt like how you didnt get to see a lot of Draycos' enemies in this book you only see their ships in the beginning fight scene.
I did like how Jack had to retrace his steps to every planet he visted since he got framed. I also liked how Jack and Draycos worked together. It seemed like they could complete most tasks when they were together.Overall, i think that this book was a good book but not like the book Eldest.
A Higher Purpose.......2006-07-11
Dragon and Thief (2003) is the first novel in the Dragonback Adventure series. The Shontine and K'da have been fleeing the Valahgua for years. A probeship has made contact with a native of a far region and the Havenseeker and three other freighters have brought the advance party to prepare their refuge. As they approached Iota Kletis, four other ships appear sending the correct recognition codes. Suddenly, those ships fire missiles at the freighters and then bath them in the Death beam.
In this novel, Jack Morgan is awakened by Uncle Virge, a virtual personality, at 4:57AM shiptime to watch four freighters come overhead. Then four Djinn-90 fighters show up. As Jack observes the skirmish from the surface of Iota Kletis, three freighters cease fighting and the last ship leaves orbit and crashes nearby.
After the fighters depart, Jack goes to checkout the wreckage. He finds only dead humanoids on the crashed ship until he discovers Draycos. He describes the body to Uncle Virge as a little dragon about the size of a tiger and covered with gold scales. As he leans over the body, Draycos leaps at him and then vanishes.
Draycos has lost Polphir, his Shontine host, during the crash. Once he has decided that Jack is not one of the attackers, he uses Jack as his new host. At the point of contact, his leap has turned into a merger with Jack's skin. Now Jack has a removable tattoo over much of his body.
Jack is very startled at first (actually he totally panics), but he gradually gets used to Draycos. The Shontine/K'da relationship is a true symbiosis, but the K'da can only remain separate from the host for less than six hours. They have to revert to the collapsed state for a time before resuming their normal bodies. In exchange for this service, the K'da provide companionship and protection.
After learning about the Shontine/K'da symbiosis, Jack shares his past life with Draycos. Before his uncle died, Jack had roamed the galaxy as a thief. Uncle Virgil was an accomplished safe cracker and con artist, while Jack specialized in burglaries.
Now that Uncle Virgil is dead, Jack is trying to stay away from the authorities who would put him in a group home. After all, fourteen year old boys are not capable of flying a spaceship around the galaxy. Of course, he has been doing just that for the past year.
Jack has been trying to go straight for some time now and had contracted with Braxton Universis to transport ten crates from Vagran to Cordolane. When they arrived, one of the boxes was empty. Since then he has been hiding out to avoid arrest, most recently on Iota Kletis.
Draycos persuades Jack to help look for the source of the Djinn-90 fighters. Someone has apparently learned the destination for the Shontine/K'da migration. Moreover, they have obtained at least four Valahgua Death weapons. Whoever ambushed the advance party must be located and stopped or else more people, including humans, will die.
This novel includes direct challenges of Jack's moral sense. Uncle Virgil didn't believe in giving an even break to anyone outside of his immediate family. Draycos believes in fairness to everyone until such time as they betray his trust. Of course, even Draycos realizes that armed confrontations require violent solutions, but he doesn't kill except as absolutely necessary in open conflict.
This is a short novel, but packed full of adventure. The story reads quite well, but the main characters are frustrated at every turn. They have only a short time to discover the identity of the ambushers, yet they don't get very far in this installment. Still, they do develop some useful hints.
Highly recommended for Zahn fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high adventure and exotic relationships.
Book Description
For centuries they’ve lived in secret among northern England’s green and misted hills. Creatures of extraordinary beauty, power, and sensuality, they possess the ability to shape-shift from human to dragon and back again. Now their secret–and their survival–is threatened by a temptation that will break every boundary....
Dubbed the Smoke Thief, a daring jewel thief is confounding the London police. His wealthy victims claim the master burglar can walk through walls and vanish into thin air. But Christoff, the charismatic Marquess of Langford, knows the truth: the thief is no ordinary human but a “runner” who’s fled Darkfrith without permission. As Alpha leader of the dra´kon, it’s Kit’s duty to capture the fugitive before the secrets of the tribe are revealed to mortals. But not even Kit suspects that the Smoke Thief could be a woman.
Clarissa Rue Hawthorne knew her dangerous exploits would attract the attention of the dra´kon. But she didn’t expect Christoff himself to come to London, dangling the tribe’s most valuable jewel–the Langford Diamond–as bait. For as long as she could remember, Rue had lived the life of a halfling–half dra´kon, half mortal–and an outcast in both worlds. She’d always loved the handsome and willful Kit from the only place it was safe: from afar. But now she was no longer the shy, timid girl she’d once been. She was the first woman capable of making the Turn in four generations. So why did she still feel the same dizzying sense of vulnerability whenever he was near?
From the moment he saw her, Kit knew that the alluring and powerful beauty was every bit his Alpha equal and destined to be his bride. And by the harsh laws of the dra´kon, Rue knew that she was the property of the marquess. But they will risk banishment and worse for a chance at something greater. For now Rue is his prisoner, the diamond has disappeared, and she’s made the kind of dangerous proposition a man like Kit cannot resist....In this bewitching novel, Shana Abé transports us into a world of exhilarating romance and magic.
A Love Story of Shape Shifting Dragons.......2007-09-27
Sorry I just blew the who pltt of the book. Simple, and at times too sappy. Wanted some excitement and maybe some swordplay, ended up with a romace between to dragons in a victorian setting... Yawn.
Bewitching dragons, smoke, urchins and responsibilities.......2007-09-27
I read this book after reading its follow-up, "the Dream Thief", so some aspects of the story were already familiar to me. Shana Abé's world is that of a race of people, the Drákon, who can turn into smoke or dragons. Originally from the Carpathian mountains they area now living in Darkfrith in the North of England with the Marquess of Langford as their Alpha. He remembers the young girl he dubbed 'Mouse' who drowned aged 17 after being teased by the other drákon young girls.
However the Council of Drákon are worried as a jewel thief has been identified as a member of the drákon race, and yet none are allowed to leave and those who escape, called 'runners', are hunted down and killed. The Marquess plans to capture the runner by taking his special diamond to London for a museum display and catching the thief in the act. However all does not go according to plan when he gets sidetracked by a female drákon, discovering that she is Clarisse Rue Hawthorne, the 'mouse' who drowned nine years before.
Rue and Kit set out to find the diamond but Kit has decided on Rue as his bride although she is unwilling. Their hunt for the diamond is hampered by the fact that the drákon must keep their existence secret but also because they don't know the identity of the real thief, the other 'runner', and by Rue's care for street urchin Zane (hero of 'The Dream Thief').
There are some exciting scenes in this book where they race around London as humans, as dragons and as smoke; Kit is trying to wear Rue down into becoming his wife and yet she fears the seclusion and restricted life in Darkfrith, plus she needs to bargain for Zane's life as a human who is aware of the drákon. The romance aspect of the book is subordinate to the fun of the hunt around the London of the 1750s and some of the detail of dress and of location are very well written. This was an enjoyable first book in the series with both hero and heroine flawed and yet engaging.
Enjoyed this one!.......2007-09-14
A wonderful story, great characters, and a depth protrayed between them that truely pulls at the emotions. The author lifts you up and drops you down, in a neat way. The unbelievable context worked for me (I love paranormal, sci-fi), but the complexity of the relationship, trust, healing, and heroism would have worked without the fantastic components. The subtext on female rights, I also liked a lot. I thought the writing style and descriptions were just great, (we could believe a man/woman could fly!). I hope there is more coming from this author.
Couldn't Find the Books Mood.......2007-09-07
Having enjoyed "Intimate Enemies" by Shana Abe, I looked forward to reading "The Smoke Thief". I was into the book about 100 pages and couldn't figure out exactly who was what, what was what, and where they were. That's not to say there weren't some good sections, but I actually had to read the other reviews to get a deeper sense of the story. So, given that, I'd say all in all, the main characters of Kit and Clarissa could have used more depth, the background of the Drakon should have been edited down and simplified, and the story more streamlined. Would have made a better book, and the mood of the book may have come alive, which for me, it didn't.
creative idea and a good read.......2007-08-21
I wasn't sure about this book as I couldn't finish even a quarter of one of her previous books, but the premise intrigued me so I gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the story. The characters have more life than any other book I've tried to read of hers. Usually she leeches her characters of as much emotion and humanism as possible and renders a reader unable to connect or care in any way about them. This book, I actually enjoyed and liked both characters. The introduction of the people of the drakon are interesting and something I haven't seen around. I would skim through the prologue as it was written in such vague terms that half the time you weren't sure what was going on. Once you got past that, the story picked up and was a nice adventure. Kit was a true alpha male, and Rue had intelligence and pluck. The one other criticism I had was how unrelenting and hard the drakon people are. There seems to be little kindness or even friendly camraderie between them. And, when the author brings up a character who had gone to great lengths to escape from a place that brought him no future and a lot of misery from those around him, I would have been happier if she'd allowed him to escape (and maybe made him a future hero in a book). After all, anyone willing to cut off their own hand to escape deserves to stay free (you don't read about the actually method of escape, by the way, only in passing so there's definitely no gory details or anything. THere's nothing like that in this book). Still, it had a satisfying ending and ended up on my keep pile to read again. As a warning, the same can't be said of the second book in this series. It was long, boring and she went back to writing characters who were little more than numb zombies. I had to force myself through it and ended feeling sadly disappointed given how much I liked the Smoke Theif. If you have to read the dream theif, rent it from the library. But, definitely get the Smoke Theif.
One of the finest guide books in the world!.......2001-09-28
If it is a single thief you want, or a whole thieves guild, this is the ONLY book you need! The character subclasses such as cutpurse give such a depth into the game. I have used this to develope a guide run city, with 150+ guide members, from all of the subclasses listed in the book. It gives such depth! As a thief user myself it is now indispensible. Even the new item lists are superb! Get it if you use thieves at all!!!
Awesome Complete Handbook.......2000-07-13
If you have ever played or have ever wanted to play a thief character you need this book. Before I got this handbook, no one really wanted to play the thief in the group and usually was just a second character for someone. Thieves just open locks and occasionally fire their bows right?
WRONG. This book opens up many faucets of the class that I had never thought of and expands on the rest. The kits in this book really give character to your thief characters. Ever wonder why thugs were always thieves class, well check out the bandit or thug kits. I have heard complaints about the kits not having a lot benefits\hindrances (and the majority don't), but what they do offer is flair and adjusts abilities (including thief abilities as well as proficiencies) to better fit the thief's many roles.
This is also the only handbook that has any good new proficiencies. I especially liked alertness, fast talking, intimidation, and observation. I also liked the new equipment section. WOW! It has all kinds of cool stuff that would make any thief character's mouth water and don't even unbalance game play. The book is worth it just for this and the kits.
But there is more. The book also gives new info on lock picking (advanced locks, modifying checks) and on poisons and antidotes. There is a great deal of info on thieves' guilds. A LOT. Probably even more than you would want to know, but that's okay. Use what you like skip what you don't. If thieves' guilds even show up in your campaigns, I highly recommend this for DMs. The book also gives useful info on running thief based campaigns that gave me lots of ideas on how to make life in the city a little more interesting. Ever want to run a campaign solely in Greyhawk City or Waterdeep, well try it.
All in all this is a great resource for players and DMs alike.
The Complete Thief's Handbook/Player's Handbook Rules Supple.......2000-05-02
If you are a big D&D player who is sick of always being a fighter and wants a chalange. This is the book for you, The thief is a very fun character to play as. I mean who wouldnt want to pick pockets, and loot giant mansions full of treasure and guards without even being touched. keep in mind all of what you have in your supplies and you can loot a house without anybody noticing.
if you have any questions on how to loot a house and sneak around email me at magictg00@hotmail.com
Best All-Around Class Handbook.......1999-12-02
This is by far my favorite "Complete _____'s Handbook." Nearly everything in here is essential if you want to have a real thief, and not just a bunch of stats. The kits are some of the best I've seen. Other Handbooks have outlandish or just downright worthless kits (for instance, take that Ranger kit that turns you into a tree!). In this one, however, every kit is unique, and yet believable and fun to play. For a long time, this handbook was the only information available on Thieves' Guilds. If that's what you're after, however, I'd recommend Den of Theieves, which fleshes it out even more and provides all sorts of adventure possibilities. Round this book out with new equipment and magic items, and you have a classic.
New equipment, new kits, new rules (optional).......1999-11-08
No longer a character class just limited to stealing and running. This book has a kit for all situations. New equipment, new items, and ideas for guilds, a nice spin on 1 of the basic 4 classes.
A Perfect Read-Aloud for Teachers.......2000-03-29
I used this title, The Dragon and the Thief, in my sixth grade language arts classroom this year. It was the perfect book to compliment the study of ancient Egypt which was going on in social studies classes. I read a chapter at a time and my students were begging me to continue when it came time to stop each day. The book is a wonderful adventure, with engaging characters and lots of hidden learning on Egyptian gods and social structures. I had one student who felt that Bradshaw's Prahotep & Hathor beat out Harry Potter! Too bad it's out of print - my students wrote the publisher because they wanted their own copies...
Hathor.......2000-03-20
I always rather liked this book when I was in the sixth grade. Hathor is a very interesting character. Anyways, the sequal is called "The Land of Gold" and if you wern't satisfied by the ending in this book, then you definetly will be in the next. Haharkay is the best new character in that one and I refuse to tell you who he is, but you can guess :)
Great storytelling!.......1999-11-19
I think this was a good book. I like mythological animals and stories and this is one of them. Gillian Bradshaw has a good imagination and is a good writer because I could see the things she described in my head. I want to read more of her books.
A very good story.......1999-06-20
I'm always on the lookout for novels containing either Egyptian themes or dragons. This book satisfies both of those themes, blending a nice storyline with the fanatical religious actions many cultures develop when magic is a strong force in the population. My only complaint is the rather sudden ending...but I won't go into that. I still strongly recommend this book to fans of mythological readings.
Great Adventure.......2000-04-02
Really Great adventure. It is hard to find 1 player adventures and this is really great. It makes a gread sleep over adventure that you can play with one of your buddies. It is a good adventure if you are a DM and you want to teach one of your players to thinlk for himself and not rely on the rest of the party.
