A very thorough account of the addiction field from it's first conception up the the conflicts in this area in the present day.
This book contains an excellent historical context which is useful to many addictions professionals.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Histories of Treatment in the U.S........1998-03-31

This is one of the most comprehensive historical books on the history of addiction treatment and recovery I have read. Not just a history of Alcoholics Anonymous, it covers the cures, the fakes, the trials and tribulations of attempting to treat alcoholism and other drug addiction in America.

It should be a "must read" for anyone interested in treatment and recovery. William L. White did a great service for the treatment field by writing this book

A boy and his dragon. A likely mutant of some sort dragon choose a boy to bond with. The dragon is white, and very small. The boy has to deal with the stigma of his runt dragon, and his own growing responsibilities as a member of the ruling class.

Taking part in Threadfall activities even if he shouldn't, he gets sick.

Taking time out to recover he learns about Pern's past and those there before them, because his mutant dragon has a very impressive time travel sense and skill.

5 out of 5 stars Great if you like Sci Fiction.......2007-05-13

The Pern series of books from Anne McCaffery are great. Better if you read them in order, (look online at her website for recommendations). This is futuristic science fiction, but if you liked Aregon, you would probably like this series too.

4 out of 5 stars The White Dragon.......2007-01-22

I've read this book before, years ago, and really enjoyed it. So I wanted
it for my library. I would rate it right up there with some of Asimov's
work. It is well written and it draws you into the story, real page
turner, hard to put down.I am going to add the other novels about Pern and
her Dragon Riders to my library also.
I think Anne McCaffrey really brings to life, Ruth,Jaxom,Menolly and of
course those pesky and annoing but always lovably fire lizards. Along
with the rest of the charactors of her book.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars, Really..........2006-08-15

Having read and loved both Dragonflight and Dragonquest before I picked up this one, I was assured ahead of time that this would be another McCaffrey masterpiece, a story of Pern where you could be tipped into the book and not want to resurface. I wasn't wrong- there is plenty on the old heroes Lessa and F'lar, and of course the amazing, enormous, telepathic dragons that fight the Thread of Pern. I read this book over three days and didn't want it to end.

Still, there were flaws in The White Dragon that weren't there in Dragonflight and Dragonquest. The biggest is the character of Jaxom, the new main character. McCaffrey didn't spend nearly enough time on him- like Dragonquest she pushed you right into the story without dwelling on his personality. It was fine in Dragonquest because you had already gotten to know the main characters in Dragonflight- but it's annoying in The White Dragon because I never really liked Jaxom. He wasn't a very likable character, and as one that the story focuses about and came out on top at the end he should have been. He ordered about his dragon- Ruth was a big, flying, talking pet more than Mnementh, Ramoth, Canth and the others ever were. His romances were annoying- he didn't care about Corana, his slowly developing relationship with Menolly screeched to a halt abruptly, and Sharra wasn't introduced early enough for you to care.

Robinton's narrative was much more satisfactory, and I liked his character and how he developed during the story. There are a lot more characters to remember in The White Dragon than there were in the other two novels- at some point I stopped checking back and just skipped over the names I didn't know. The story itself, still, is as engaging as any past novel of Pern- McCaffrey has a way of grabbing your interest, and every time it starts to ebb away she puts in something else that draws you back again. I loved this novel, despite Jaxom, and Pern will always be one of my favorite series.

5 out of 5 stars Fitting End to Great Trilogy.......2006-04-30

The white Dragon is the third book in Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern trilogy. In my opinion, the Pern books are McCaffery's best. In this book Jaxom, the son of the evil Lord Jax who invaded the kingom of Ruatha when Lessa was a young girl, is struggling with his own identity. He knows that one day he will be the Lord Holder of Ruatha, but the kingdom is right now under excellent stewardship and Jaxom just doesn't quite know what he's going to do with his life.

While visiting Benden Weyr, he accidentally impresses a dragon, Ruth, but Ruth is no ordinary dragon. He is pure white and is somewhat small for a dragon. Jaxom's impression of Ruth sets off a huge fuss among the holders-- how can Jaxom rule Ruatha and be a dragon rider at the same time? It also causes problems among the weyrleaders because they are not sure what should be done with such an unusual dragon.

The story of Jaxom and Ruth's drive for acceptance by both worlds is a great story, filled with friendship, love and some humor as well. With this book, McCaffery has written a stellar ending to her trilogy.

Book Description

Where the Shadows Grow Long

We live our days completely ignorant of the true terrors lurking around us. Only rarely do our experiences draw back the veil of shadows and reveal the horror in our midst. These glimpses into the supernatural can cause us to retreat into comforting lies -- "There are no such things as monsters" -- or stir our morbid curiosity. Only a few, however, can overcome their fear and dare to look deeper.

Abandon Hope All Who Enter

The World of Darkness Rulebook introduces a version of our contemporary world where the supernatural is real. Players join to tell tales of mystery and horror, where theme, mood and plot are more important to a character's experiences than his weapons or equipment. Inside are rules for character creation, task resolution, combat and any activity your character attempts as he delves into the shadows.

5 out of 5 stars This is INCREDIBLE.......2007-07-04

Just picked this up and Im so jazzed. It is probably the best rpg me and my group have played to date. This is the basic rule book for the other games, you need it in order to play vampire, werewolf or mage. Without thsi book you dont have the basic rules, like combat, characters merits and skills, so be sure to buy this book FIRST. In fact, its so good that you can just play mortals with this game without having any of the supernatural settings like vampire or mage. I researched this game alot before buying it and this game book has even won MAJOR game awards! Im a huge werewolf buff and my GM is running a great game for us.

This game ROCKS hands down!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent REBOOT to the World of Darkness.......2007-06-08

This book is essential in order to play one of the core setting books such as Vampire the Requiem, Werewolf the Forsaken and Mage the Awakening. This book provides all the core rules and mechanics for character creation, combat, actions and the World of Darkness setting, a fictional world much like ours where the supernatural exists. White Wolf has produced books for the World of Darkness, their core game setting for many years, but this version presents a new "reboot" or re-imagining of their game world. Many of the mechanics have been fixed, such as massive dice pools which resulted in having more chances for a botch. Additionally, the game makes use of the common everyday Joe mortal as the basic character. You begin as a mortal and then may acquire one of the supernatural templates such as vampire, werewolf or mage.

The introduction of virtures and vices adds an element of roleplaying that was missing in the previous version. To that add an extensive chapter on storytelling and setting building. One of the things I like most about this game is that you have so much development of the World of Darkness that you need never play a vampire or mage. Humans have as much devoted to them that it makes this a stand alone game if you decide not to purchase the vampire, werewolf or mage setting books.

I was a fan of the old World of Darkness, but with this version I have become an avid gamer like never before.

4 out of 5 stars Gift.......2006-11-05

I got this as a gift for my son and he (13 years old) has really been enjoying it - says it is a great game book.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Update.......2006-10-13

This is White Wolf's generic system book for its various product lines stuffed with system rules.

The system is much more solid then the previous storyteller system. Rolls are difficulty 8 with modifiers to the dice pool. Even when you shouldn't be able to go for something you can roll one die but risk dramatic failure. Borrowing from some systems there's also a 10-again re-roll rule.

Players familiar with DC Heroes will recognize the much more streamlined approach to abilities in the three catagories: power (attacking: intelligence, strength, presence), finese (agility: wits, dexterity, manipulation), and resistance (defense: resolve, stamina, composure). These are in mental, physical, and social columns, respectively. If you want a good looking character, (Previous Appearance ability) that's a Merit. Backgrounds are now called Merits too. A standard starting character begins with 7.

I like it. Alot. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is I feel it could have been thicker with what shows up in books such as Armory. Lowering the final cost-per-page for the buyer.

2 out of 5 stars Why?.......2006-09-20

Why make this book? The "Old" WoD was too widely distributed, so they had to create a new version to sell. The last time White Wolf did this, at least they didn't nuke the setting and have a do-over. If you look at this book, with it's vampires' blood potency that makes them go into torpor and therefore become weaker only to awaken and repeat the process, why be afraid of elders? You might as well be afraid of someone reincarnated as a butterfly!
What I think is funny is that when I talk to bookstore people, they try to sell this book as a revision. What it really amounts to is creating a market for more books.
Like the book? You should check out the old ones. The bottom line is that if it was so important to "streamline" parts of Vampire, Werewolf, etc, that could have been a pamphlet sized companion to the 3rd edition.

Book Description

By the author of In Legend BornIt is a time of vast changes in the island nation of Sileria. Oppressed for centuries by one conqueror after another, this land of fierce pride and ancient rivalries awaited the prophesied Firebringer, who would free them. Josarian, a mountain peasant, survived his leap into the volcano to become the Firebringer. He united the impoverished shallaheen, the magical fire-wielding Guardians, and the vastly powerful mages known as Waterlords in an unprecedented alliance that defeated the foreign Valdani who had ruled Sileria for too long. But now Josarian is dead, betrayed by the alliance and slain by the ice-dragon of Kiloran, the most powerful Waterlord in Sileria. Tansen, Josarian's second-in-command, has taken up the banner of independence, and leads the shallaheen and the Guardians against the Waterlords so that Sileria can be free of a tyranny far worse than Valdani rule. As the volcano goddess Dar rumbles her displeasure in earthquakes and lava flows, the forces of fate, prophecy, and magic combine to create new heroes--from the desolate mountains, from the water-starved cities, from the sea, and even from beneath the earth. Ancient forces join with unlikely allies to fulfill the prophecies that inspire revolt and excite religious fervor. But in Sileria, betrayal has long been a way of life, and it wears many faces as the ambitions of the high and the low ensnare the fates of people across the land, wreaking havoc among the faithful. With consummate narrative skill, Laura Resnick brings to life the excitement and adventure of this magical land in its epic struggle to find its true leaders, heal ancient wounds, and chart a path out of chaos to a new day of peace.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just remember-white dragons have NOTHING to do with this book.......2007-04-02

I have often wondered why most fantasy series come in trilogies. The answer is, of course, that the publishing companies, bookstores and authors want your money! So in this case, what was supposed to be a duology with the really cool titles of "In Legend Born" followed by "In Fire Forged" turned into a trilogy. So what is really the second book was split into two books because otherwise it would have been over a thousand pages (which is not so long for epic fantasy actually) and now we have to pay more (the author claims it was not her intention to squeeze her poor readers and because she is a great writer I will believe her and blame this on the crappy booksellers) for a book with the completely lame title of "The White Dragon". This title by the way has nothing to do with the events of this novel. Nothing at all.

Anyway, so this book starts out differently. We b begin with a clan of the sea-bound sea folk, who are bound never to set foot on land until the last Dragonish (something like a shark I think but I can't help picturing really large versions of the fish in Chinese restaurant fish tanks) is dead. Our third person narrator is a 14 or 15 year old boy named Zarien, who is about to have his first Dragonfish hunt, which will make him officially a man. Unfortunately, he gets killed by one of these fish, only to be brought back to life by one of the nine goddess of the sea, the only one without a consort. She tells him to go find her mate-the sea king and King of the sea born people-on land. Naturally he's appalled, because not only is this a little sacrilegious (the sea goddess wants a land man?) but if he sets foot on land he will shunned by everyone he knows forever. He resists, the goddess threatens him with returning to being dead, and he agrees.

So where does one start to look on land for the sea king? Well Zarien, being one cool kid, thinks, it must be the firebringer, our old pal Josarian from "In Legend Born" ( there is a flaw in this reasoning, Josarian is Dar, the Volcano Goddess's consort and she is really jealous) only, as we know, the firebringer is dead, eaten by the white dragon. So who's the next best contestant-well, Tansen!

Naturally Tansen doesn't believe this but pretty soon he's being followed everywhere by this kid, and it's an weird mirroring of his own meeting and bonding with his blood father, who he killed at the 15 to protect the country from the Waterlords.

But that's not the only thing going on. We have the Valdani actually leaving the country-for good on hopes after some "convincing" by an assassin, a new blood feud sworn by Tansen against the Waterlords, which means civil war since some of the country loves them (who knows why?) Meanwhile Mirabar is getting visions of a new leader while feuding with Tansen, and alternating flirting with him, about his refusal to kill Elelar for betraying Josarian in order to get the Valdani to leave (this is the feuding part, not the flirting) and Najdan, Mirabar assassin's guardian/father figure, who betrayed Kiloran to be by her side muses about matchmaking and how Tansen should go out and gather sheep (as a bride price for Mirabar but he just sort of says "maybe you should think about sheep" when they're planning life or death strategy, clearly leaving everyone going, "WTF? ). Also Cheylan the other demon eyes Guardian revels his true nature, Baran, Kiloran's worst Waterlord enemy, who hates him beyond all reason and is just a wee-bit insane, shows up and acts, well, insane (yet charming) and Tansen and Kiloran fight over who's side he'll take in the civil war, Tansen and some of his men have one hilarious fight in the mud at a Waterlords house, and Elelar's half Valdani husband, Ronall runs around the country getting very drunk indeed. Also we get flashbacks into Tansen's past, into the terrible dark days with his blood father, and the night he killed him. And Dar stars throwing tantrums in the forms of earthquakes, strange lights and clouds of Gas, and visions seen by all at the most sacred guardian stronghold....visions with a voice that say "He is coming!"

As the experienced ruthless Waterlords fight the peaceful guardians, who may be powerful but have no clue on how to fight, and Tansen desperately tries to hold together his Blood brothers rebellion to save the country from a worse slavery than the Valdani ever had it under, while attempting to do something with Zarien, and come to some resolution with Mirabar...well things happen. And those things are in this book. And you will just never guess how things turn out.

Read the damm book. Five stars. The sequel to this, which finishes of the two part "In Fire Forged" is "The Destroyer Goddess" just buy it now to save yourself time. Once you get to the end you'll need to start the next book right away.

4 out of 5 stars Slow, but has strengths.......2006-06-12

Resnick's follow up to In Legend Born continues the struggle for freedom of the island of Sileria.

Having dispensed with foriegn occupiers in the first volume, the rebels are now facing the more formidable opposition of the island's native Waterlord sorcerers, led by the talented and ruthless Kiloran. Being more powerful, it seems the Waterlords require two volumes to defeat.

Most of the characters from the first book are back. The principal new addition is Zarien, a boy from the sea-born people who violates his clan's taboos by going on land to search for a ruler for his people at the command of his goddess.

What I like about this book is the way she has built up the Silerian culture, which is fully realized , not just a few noblemen and a bunch of peasants. There are complex relations between rural and urban, as well as the classes in each group. She also does character well, with a wide variety of characters from different backgrounds who help create the society's feeling of believability.

The main problem in this book is that, as often in the middle volume of trilogies, there is a shortage of action. To see this, one need look no further than the title. In fact, there is no white dragon in this book. The cover art shows the confrontation of Kiloran's white dragon with Josarian the Firebringer, which was a climactic event of In Legend Born.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely engaging - Laura Resnick does it again!.......2006-06-10

Laura Resnick's THE WHITE DRAGON contains almost everything one could ask for in a historical fantasy, and she does it with such a polished, contemplative nature that she is almost retelling history, not fantasy. She brings to bear her full writing prowess to accomplish what few writers before her have - bringing to life a whole new land, with a believable history and fully encompassing vision, along with personable characters and even a romantic subplot. Resnick's engrossing dialogues and intricate politics keep her readers guessing at every word and turning every page. Her complex depictions of Sileria's people, including their religion, racism, and history, make the reader feel and believe that they are actually in Sileria. Resnick is able to incorporate as well more than just a brief glimpse of a completely fantastical facet of Sileria, with the many forms of magic discussed and beautifully described. Completely removed from the trouble that most fantasy writers face, that is, to come up with something completely original, Resnick's novel actually contains only one major flaw - her story completely drops off at the end of the novel. There is absolutely no conclusion. The novel is continued in the next book, THE DESTROYER GODDESS. This technique would be advantageous if used anywhere else in the novel, which Resnick does incorporate, but not at the end of the book. In the end, though, it doesn't really make a difference. Fantasy lovers across the world will ear up Laura Resnick's THE WHITE DRAGON, which is a truly original fantasy adventure as well as a remarkable read.

5 out of 5 stars Laura Resnick continues a compelling story arc........2005-08-23

After reading the first novel in the series, In Legend Born, I could hardly wait to tackle The White Dragon - Part one of In Fire Forged. Laura Resnick has created a fully formed continent of multiple nations, cultures, religions, societies and peoples with a fascinating history. Some writers excel at writing action sequences while others depict characters with depth and complexity. Laura Resnick is superb at both. She is unique in her ability to create both male and female characters with equal dexterity. In fact it is her portrayal of women that gives The White Dragon its outstanding appeal. More so than other authors of sword and sorcery she has created a universe in which women are much more than secondary characters. Intrigue and action are woven together in a profoundly exhilarating epic tale. The White Dragon is a continuation of the story that begins with In Legend Born, so I would encourage anyone to read it first. Great story, great writing, great reading.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but Average.......2004-08-13

WHY YOU SHOULD READ:

If you were one of those people who enjoyed In Legend Born and have been waiting to resolve the cliffhanger ending, then this is worth a read. Though be prepared to rehash a lot of old ground! Other than those individuals, we can't really recommend this book to anyone not already familiar with the story. It does not break new ground or provide any interesting concepts such to warrant an independent read of its own (in fact, it ends with yet another cliffhanger and the promise of yet another 500 page book). We suppose that those parties intensely interested in Hawaiian myth might be interested in the treatment of the goddess Dar. If you delight in seeing religion mixed with politics to the exclusion of other merits in a book then you might also be satisfied with the treatment of Tansen, Josarian, Zarien, and the dictates of their various deities.

wHY YOU SHOULD PASS:

Other writers have taken up these subjects and done them better. Certainly for the ultimate treatise on religion and politics you should take up Dune by Frank Herbert from which so much of this book is taken. Huge fans of Herbert should stay well away from this whole series lest cries of plagiarism arise and pollute the waters.

    Book Description

WHEN SUNRISE ELEMENTARY School advertised for a thick-skinned librarian with a burning love of books, Miss Lotta Scales knew she was perfect for the job. Who could guard books better than a REAL dragon? "She kept a fiery eye out to make sure no one removed any books from the shelves.... The very thought of sticky little fingerstouching and clutching, pawing and clawing, smearing and tearing her precious books just made her hot under the collar." The teachers, singed and scorched, formed a delegation. But not even sweet Miss Lemon could convince Miss Lotta Scales that "the library belongs to the children." Fortunately, nearsighted Molly rickmeyer stumbles into a copy of Snuff the Magic Dragon and reads the tale out loud. Her storytelling beckons the children back t the library and brings them face to face with the Library Dragon. Can an open book temper the flames of the school's hot-headed librarian?

5 out of 5 stars I TIP MY "SCALES" TO THIS CREATIVE AUTHOR! A MOST FASCINATING, ORIGINAL IDEA! I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2006-02-03

The first thing I look for when buying any book is "originality of the idea" ... and this one is THAT and more. This talented author is certainly her own woman ... the ideas are all her own, not a carbon copy of anyone else's.

I was excited to see what the Library Dragon, Miss Lotta Scales, was going to do next. Very interesting story with a happy ending that kids can relate to.

My "scales" are off to this very inventive writer!

5 out of 5 stars The Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy Review by [...].......2003-03-13

The main cahracter in this book, is Miss Lotta Scales. The two minor characters are Miss Lemon and Molly Brickmeyer. This story takes places in Sunrise Elementary School. Their only problem is that their new librarian is a dragon, who wouldn't let any of the children touch the books. She made sure that none of the students got close to the books, for fear that they would wreck them by getting their little, sticky fingers all over the pages of the books. She got rid of any book that made dragons sound horrible and mean. The children started to hate library day. The principal tried to compromise with her, But she wouldn't listen to him.
Miss Lemon, the kindergarten teacher, also tried to reason with Miss Lotta Scales. She told Miss Lotta Scales that the students miss storytime. Miss Lotta Scales just laughed and didn't really care about what the other teachers thought, especially sweet, Miss Lemon. That same day, Molly Brickmeyer found her way into the library on accident. She lost her glasses, and couldn't see anything without them, unless it was right under her nose. Molly ran into a bookshelf and a book fell off and landed in her hands. She opened it and began to read it out loud.
Soon all the children heard her reading the story, and gathered into the library. Everyone was listening to her, even Miss Lotta Scales. Miss Lotta Scales started to approach Molly and.... Read this excellent book to find out what happens to Molly and all the other children at Sunrise Elementary School. I thought this book was cute, and had great little side jokes if you look at the pictures. This book is something that the whole family can enjoy. It shows how some people can have a change in heart, with a little help from children.

5 out of 5 stars Library Dragon enthralls 4-year-old boy.......2002-10-18

For the first time, my 4-year-old nephew sat enthralled and enchanted by a book that was not about construction or train equipment. He talks about the Library Dragon and wants to read it every day. The illustrations are beautiful, and the prose is right on target for children just beginning to understand the library and its vital function in communities. Perhaps the best message of the book is the emphasis on taking care of books for others to enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2002-08-23

My preschooler and first grader love this book, but best of all, so do I! It's one of those books that is entertaining to readers of all ages. You really just have to read it to understand how fun it is.

    5 out of 5 stars A favorite read-aloud in our school library!.......2000-10-11

"The Library Dragon" is one of a handful of titles that I read EVERY YEAR in our elementary school library. It is read at the beginning of each school year to first, second and third graders (and they never get tired of it).

While it is delightful, spellbinding story, my motives go beyond entertaining the kids. This hilarious tale is an excellent way to discuss proper care of library books. After all, my students don't want to see me, their librarian, turn into a fire-breathing DRAGON!

By the time the students reach third grade, I have them begin to look for the puns and plays on words pertaining to fire, heat and smoke. Author/illustrator Carmen Agra Deedy got all "fired up" with her "burning" sense of humor. To introduce the concept of puns, we make comparisons to the Amelia Bedelia books, that they already know and love so well.

    Book Description

Chung Kuo VI: White Moon, Red Dragon sees the reign of the Seven T'ang in a time of great, bloody upheaval. The rebel leader DeVore, thought dead by his enemies, has returned and is readying a terrifying flotilla to fight against the T'ang, the dictators of Earth. On Mars, another rebel, the long-exiled Hans Ebert, is formulating an audacious plan to bring a lost African tribe home again, and on Earth, the continental mega-cities of the T'ang begin to crumble as war ripples across the planet.

It is a time of endings and beginnings, when the last of the T'ang, Li Yuan, will make a terrifying alliance...when chaos will strike in the form of human-looking androids programmed to kill...and when Emily Ascher, a woman dedicated to liberty for the billions the T'ang have kept in chains, will see her vision blossom in blood red.

2 out of 5 stars Fantastic serie, bad book.......2004-06-01

I love the Chung Cuo serie. Great sweaping concepts, detailed and vivid persons, super grip on technichal details and thrilling plots. And then I read "White Moon, Red Dragon".

The first 400 pages are the usual thrilling page turners and then it just starts falling apart. The development, which is normally harmonich and logical suddenly fails details and reasons are missing. Persons reacts illogical and against their established personallity. Plots are build and suddenly abandoned. Other are suddenly pulled in from the left without any plausable explanation. Psychic powers and supernatual phenomenas suddenly enters the game.

You constantly ask yourself; "But why?" and the answers never comes.

The books "climax" completes this trend; a sea is drained just so that an invinsable army can be landed by a space amada on the opposite side and marched through the now empty basin and (surprise, surprise) 8 indians from Mars without really doing anything creates a flood, saving the world while a 9th indian talks in tongues. How and why the book as so many other things completly fails to explain.

Maybe this is just a very clever plot, building to the ultimative climax in book 7... or the book is just bad. I tend to conclude the second.

I'm likely gona get no. 7 in the seris just to see if Wingrove gets his act together.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2003-04-18

Take the chance and embark on a long journey with David Wingrove. You will not be let down. Problem is, you will see nothing of your friends or family for the next three months.

But, that is what you are looking for in a book, isn't it?

4 out of 5 stars Picture living in a humongous crawlspace..........1999-11-09

...underneath a city almost the size of a continent, and you've got "the Clay". We learned in earlier volumes that this was scientist Kim Ward's homeland. But now, in this volume, we get a closer look at the place--much of this book is set there. This is an "underworld" with none of the romance of the Sewers Of Paris as depicted in "Les Miserables". Two hundred years of the Seven's rule have created an underclass of people in both a social and a geographic sense, and it's beginning to boil up into a conflagration we couldn't begin to imagine in present-day ghettos and barrios. Meanwhile, the rule of the Seven has been on the skids since the previous volume--the only T'ang who's still a viable ruler may be the most decent of the original Seven, but that fact doesn't help a bit. Arch revolutionary Howard Devore--a Stalinesque type who as a cure for tyranny is worse than the desease--has come back from his exile on Mars. In the words of James Baldwin, it's "the fire next time", and next time is right now.

4 out of 5 stars Wingrove's cycle builds to an impending climax........1998-11-23

Wingrove's Chung Kuo cycle has been compelling for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its believability. Despite his daring intent to combine politics, science, sexuality and history into one dangerous mix, his tale has never sunk into the category of easily-dismissable science fiction. He has done this by refusing to follow the lead of popular SF trends; he has, for the most part, eschewed the technical-laden side of SF storytelling, preferring to anchor his tale to the human element.

"White Moon, Red Dragon" departs somewhat from that formula, however, in its greater reliance on technology to progress plot and to solve problems, almost deus ex machina. But the masterpiece of the previous five books encourages me to expect a sublime and profound climax in Book 7, followed by an audible denouement that will bring Wingrove's vast vision to fruition.

This book is but a preliminary step to that greatness. Though paler than its predecessors, it nonetheless reflects their glory and brilliance.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!.......1998-01-16

Filled with fast pace intrigue ,that kept you glued to each page ,book 6 countiued with the all the emotions that were so wounderfully expressed in all the prievous novels ,love, war, loylty, honer which ultimately led up to the disaterous confrontation between what was left of a fairly stable socity ,against total barbaric anarcy .I thought this finale war should have ended the seris ,but it seems mr windgrove has other plans .The big but is that he seemed to have run out of ideas the ending was to sudden after getting to the point of the grand climax then it all spirled down ward I was totaly disappointed ,however trusting in mr windgrove`s never ceasing to amaze me imagination the next installment ,should (I hope)make up for the disappointing ending in a otherwise excellent scifi novel.

    Book Description

White Tiger, Green Dragon follows the spiritual, erotic and psychic evolution of Tu Ming, a Taoist monk in Old China. Tu is apprenticed in sequence to five female adepts in the discipline known as the “dual cultivation,” a kind of tantric yoga in which sexual techniques replicate states of spiritual progress. This practice culminates in the creation of a spiritual embryo at the moment of enlightenment. The five masters who instruct Tu run the gamut of Chinese folklore characters, including the gentle pillow girl, Mei Cha, the doughty herb gatherer, Su Ba, and Lekshe Tsogyel, an acrobatic aristocrat from Tibet. Tu advances not only in his practice, but also in his understanding of life and love as he falls under the spell of five unforgettable women unequaled in religious literature. In the exciting conclusion, he experiences an epiphany that redefines what it means to attain the highest knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Tale of the Taoist Inner Alchemy.......2004-10-28

White Tiger, Green Dragon is a fictional story about the spiritual evolution through Taoist alchemical "dual inner cultivation" (a sexual practice) of Tu Ming, a Taoist monk in Old China.

Tu Ming is assigned progressively to five different female taoist practitioners of dual cultivation, each one teaching him what she has mastered up to that point and then letting him move on to a higher teacher.

It is easy, fun, engaging and at times humorous story to read.

    5 out of 5 stars a beautiful book.......2001-01-13

This story reminds me of the best historical novels, and in some ways of MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, gently weaving fact and fiction. The author's knowledge of life in old China and Taoist philosophy is impressive, and her prose is artful. Her characters are so beautifully drawn! I loved the actual and spiritual journey of the main character, the women he meets along the way, and the delightful depictions of his adventures. A thoroughly enjoyable and poetic book.

      Book Description

Black Tortoise, Red Raven, the compelling sequel to the novel White Tiger, Green Dragon, continues to weave a captivating tale as it follows the courageous pilgrimage of a young woman scholar as she travels the length of the Yangtze River.

Scholar Li, the daughter of Tu Ming and Shen Tao, flees a revolution in eastern China and travels west with a caravan of rug merchants. A Taoist intellectual and master of the tantric arts, the teenager encounters spiritual masters from unfamiliar traditions during her 1,500-mile expedition toward the foothills of the Himalayas. As she journeys to the Red Raven Temple, her spiritual understanding grows and she learns important life lessons from yogis, “crazy Zen” practitioners, Muslims, Buddhists, and Jews. Just as she is about to reach her final destination, Li's life is forever changed when she encounters an extraordinary stranger who bears an uncanny resemblance to a historical figure.

Black Tortoise, Red Raven not only opens the doors to personal growth and spiritual understanding for Li; it will also lead anyone who has a receptive spirit, open mind, and loving heart on the same journey to finding their true purpose in life.
