As a clinical person both in mental health and addiction medicine I can say without reservation that this is the most complete and interesting books on the topic. You won't be sorry you bought this one and will keep in you libray for life.
Slaying The Dragon.......2001-09-20
A very thorough account of the addiction field from it's first conception up the the conflicts in this area in the present day.
This book contains an excellent historical context which is useful to many addictions professionals.
One of the BEST Histories of Treatment in the U.S........1998-03-31
This is one of the most comprehensive historical books on the history of addiction treatment and recovery I have read. Not just a history of Alcoholics Anonymous, it covers the cures, the fakes, the trials and tribulations of attempting to treat alcoholism and other drug addiction in America.
It should be a "must read" for anyone interested in treatment and recovery. William L. White did a great service for the treatment field by writing this book

As it flexes its diplomatic and military muscles, China is becoming an increasingly powerful player on the world stage. Richard Bernstein and Ross Munro's flawed but important The Coming Conflict with China analyzed the implications for American policymakers. Edward Timperlake and William Triplett also believe that a confrontation between China and the U.S. is inevitable. In Red Dragon Rising, they describe a series of worst-case scenarios, such as a bloody invasion of Taiwan. If the situation is as dangerous as they indicate, however, they have done America a disservice by the extreme political spin they give their arguments. They attempt to associate the Clinton administration with every evil of which China's unsavory Communist regime is capable. Photographs of Clinton and Gore talking with Chinese leaders are illustrated to prove their complicity with butchers--but what should we make of photos of Bush doing the same? A reference to Chinese New Year as Tet, a purely Vietnamese term, suggests the parameters of the authors' experience. In a disclaimer on the cover, they state that their details of the Tiananmen massacre are necessary to show the true nature of Communist China's government, but their lurid descriptions are gratuitous. This work is not balanced analysis or serious contemporary history but party-political poison. Red Dragon Rising is a cheap book, full of cheap shots (it is simplistic to hold China, for all its faults, responsible for "two million Cambodians killed"), whose political bias cheapens its important subject. Right-wing conspiracy theorists will love this book; others will not. --John Stevenson

Insight to China's plans for their perceived enemies........2007-05-08
This book spells out the known weapons China has, as well as what destruction they can reap. It is frightening in what China has armed know enemies of the US with. It does indeed credit Russia with selling the weapons to China. It points out how naive people are in this nation. Any one who reads this book should be ready to fight to keep his weapon least he become like the people in Tiananmen Square.

Let's see, nearly a decade after the first edition of this book was published and narry a missile fired between the U.S. and China. In fact, the two nations have only become more cooperative with each other, i.e. Korea, currency revaluation, the war on terror, etc.
Can we just ignore these "so-and-so is a 'coming threat' to America" paranoid delusions? I think there are more important, and more real enemies to America that would need to be dealt with, rather than muddy the waters with paranoid speculations.

I bought this book to see China's potential growth in every respect. I am very disappointed after reading the book. At the introduction of the book author gives his solution as "Double the military and double again if needed be. Build more B-2 ,F-22 , F/A 18 airplanes. Mobilize the industry for munitions production. Go forward for ballistic missile systems". Also he curses Clinton Administration countless times for its foreign policy and promotes Bush presidency. He claims that Clinton got campaign money from China and favors them. What about Bush-Saudý-9/11 connections? Not even a word.
He also trying to show Chinese Regime brutality like selling weapons to both sides at Iraq-Iran war (no word from Senior Bush, and Oliver North), Selling guns to 3rd world countries and make money (No Saudi-US gun Trade mentioned), no respect to UN decisions (What Mr. Bush did in Iraq?) Selling missile systems to Pakistan while US forcing sanctions (Mr. Bush lifted the sanctions after 9/11 to non-Democratic Pakistan regime).
He insists that's why US must declare war against China, not strategic partnership like Clinton did. Strategic partnership gives China open ýtself to the world and influenced by democratic system. On the long run, Chinese people will select democracy and bury the old communist regime like East Europe did.
There are many right points in the book like Týananmen Square Massacre, but the these accurate points fades due to being Clinton hater.
If you want to learn something about China, this one sided, extreme rightist book is not the one. Do not buy it and do not read it.
A Bill of Indictment against the Clinton Administration.......2005-02-21
And you believed in the myth of China's peaceful rise? You do so at your peril. China has a long history of aggression and threatening its neighbors. Today, it has a greater capacity to wreck havok than it has at any point in its Communist history, and we to a large extent have Clinton to blame for it. There is plenty of evidence provided from reputable sources regarding the manner in which the Chinese government infultrated the Clinton Administration, as well as the ever present threat that China presents not only to the United States, but also its Asian neighbors like Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and most of all Taiwan.
Works like this are ignored at our peril. For a long time, people have seemed to believe the in best possibility for Communist China, always to have been shown for ignorance in the end. Those who adulate over China today run the same risk. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Unfortunately, there are too many people who have a lack of knowledge of China's history to know the true nature of the threat. This book will go some of the way to alleviating that ignorance.
The Red Chinese Threat to U.S. National Security.......2004-08-31
In the news, I recently heard a People's Liberation Army strategist, Liu Jiangjia, stated brusquely: "War is not far from us now. A new arms race has started to develop." First published in 1999, during the twilight of the Clinton Administration, this Regnery classic has made light of Clinton overtures to Beijing and the startling developments in Red China's military industrial complex. Red China is well on its way to becoming a hegemonic military superpower as her economic liberalization and foreign trade continues to buoy her GDP. Moreover, her military insiders often speak of the U.S. as an "enemy" and a "threat." Red China is embracing what the CIA calls a social market economy. Essentially, kleptocrat communist party bosses are taking the helm in controlling the vibrant military-industrial consortiums with foreign investors. China's economy is developing rapidly. Western expertise and investment from aerospace American companies like Boeing, for example, may prove to be a huge national security risk. (Frankly, American companies in the absence of firm U.S. government controls have proven willingness to compromise American security for profit.) The Clinton Administration presided over an immense relaxation of technology transfer controls and has turned a blind eye to Chinese espionage. Ethnic Chinese have seized economic and/or political control over nations throughout the Pacific Rim. However, one should realize many ethnic Chinese don't have sympathy with the Red regime in Beijing like the Taiwanese. The Chinese have been actively expanding their reach throughout Pacific Rim and are even getting strong Latin American connections. For example, a PLA-affiliated company has seized control of the Panama Canal and has built a transshipment facility in the Bahamas. China could feasibly use Panama as strategic chokepoint cutting off U.S. trade. Obviously this economic jugular vein can be a useful blackmail chip in power politics games. Books like _Red Cocaine_ have demonstrated a considerable Sino-Soviet involvement in the drug trade and no doubt Chinese shipping industry carries opium bound for the Americas. Red China's connection with radical Islamist countries in arms dealings is alarming. If China ever wanted to subject the giant Gulliver to a campaign of terrorism, it's conceivable she could do so covertly by arming and assisting efforts of radical Islamist terrorists. China has demonstrated a willingness to work with radical Islamist regimes and Muslim nations to enhance their military and nuclear programs. Some of the more dangerous technology transfers of U.S. knowledge to Red China may be through intermediaries like Israel. The authors have pointed out that Israel - America's professed ally - is selling weapons and sensitive technology to Red China. They have assisted in the development of a Chinese fighter based on the F-16. What is more alarming is that Israel is usually the first to get America's latest and greatest hi-tech weaponry once it goes into production. The strategic technological lead that the new JSF and F-22 weapons programs gives the U.S. could be egregiously compromised if Israel as a participant leaks sensitive technology to Red China for profit. As an addendum to this book's findings, I would add careful news analysis reveals that the Bush Administration frankly has waffled on Taiwan and has made more concessions to China and even hinted at support for unification with the mainland. This is something that the defend the GOP come hell or high water crowd simply ignores. Moreover, he has likely failed to sufficiently address the economic and security threats China poses. Obviously, the administration has failed to rein in on the openness with China and the loosening of technology transfer controls that his predecessor Clinton initiated. Timperlake and Triplett are to be commended for their research in profiling the national security threat posed by Red China. Though, I think more substantive in-depth research could have been done. (I give it a 3.5/5.0 rating.)

Here There Be Magic.......2004-08-21
Yolen is one of my favorite authors, and I find it hard not to gush while describing her work. Hence, the complete and utter lack of other Yolen reviews in my repertoire (gushers can be tiresome, after all). Here There Be Dragons is one of a series of three books (the other two being Here There Be Unicorns and Here There Be Witches). In it Yolen has collected some of her best stories and poems regarding dragons, both real and imagined, good and bad, friendly and frightful. Brief but fascinating blurbs offer insight into Yolen's inspirations and the thought processes that went on as she created each tale.
David Wilgus illustrates all three books in the series, showcasing a wit, insight, and creative genius that perfectly complements Yolens own literary style. (One of the best examples of Wilgus's work is right on the cover -- look at the eye). I hope to see more of his work.
My only regret is that the collection is so short. Yolen's works are so clearly and neatly structured, and so original and accessible, and yet so very deep and complex, that I wish the stories will go on and on and on, and I am often startled and a little shocked when I reach the end of one of her books, and the story does not continue unfolding beyond the covers (unlike the shining silver road in one of her tales, which continues unwinding as long as the hero or heroine stays on it).
Here There Be Dragons is no different.
DESTINED TO BECOME A CLASSIC.......2004-04-22
Jane Yolen's great creative gifts come to the fore in this enchanting volume, which is a marvelous companion to "Here There Be Unicorns."
Both of these collections of stories and poems are superbly illustrated by duotone pencil drawings by David Wilgus. His detailed pictures are true compliments to what are destined to become classics in children's literature.
Here there be dragons aplenty.......2002-06-28
Jane Yolen produces more great poetry and fiction in "Here There Be Dragons," part of her short story series focusing on ghosts, angels, witches, dragons, and so forth.
It starts off with "Why Dragons?", a poem about St. George, and proceeds to the highly original "Great-Grandfather Dragon's Tale," a story from the point of view of the dragons rather than the humans. There are two evocative little drabbles (stories under a hundred words), the saddening "Dragon Woke and Stretched" and the spellbinding "Sorry the Old Man Said." "Cockfight" is what later became the Pit Dragon trilogy, a story about a young boy on a poor planet which has dragons fighting for money. "Dragon Night" is a sweet little poem, a sort of dragon lullaby. "Dragonfield" is a slightly less interesting story about an unheroic young man and a healer's daughter (and a dragon, of course).
"The King's Dragon" is the story of a member of the King's Dragoons, who has a slight problem when people keep hearing "dragoon" as "dragon." "Into the Wood" is pretty, if a little hard to understand. "Dragon's Boy," which later became a short children's novel, tells the story of the adolescent King Arthur and how he learned wisdom from a "dragon." "The Making of Dragons" is a thoroughly entertaining poem about how to construct a dragon. "One Ox, Two Ox, Three Ox, and the Dragon King" is the story of three boys called One Ox, Two Ox, Three Ox (I think their father had a screw loose), in a story partly influenced by Chinese legends. The collection ends with the wistful "Here There Be Dragons," a poem which harkens back to old maps with those words on them.
As in all of these books, Yolen includes comments and insights to the beginning of each story and poem, what caused her to write them and how they were influenced. David Wilgus's pencil drawings are realistic and soft-edged, very nice to look at and very appropriate to the contents.
A nice little collection for the dragon fanciers, much better than most story collections. Fans of Yolen's "Dragon's Boy" and "Pit Dragon" trilogy will undoubtedly enjoy this.
Great Book.......2000-04-06
This is an interesting collection of short stories and peotry by Jane Yolen, who has done a lot of her work about dragons. I love the poems about St. George, types of dragons, and Here There Be Dragons (which the title comes from). The pencil drawings by the illustrator are excellent. The short stories are good, but not really masterpeices. Overall, this is a great book, as are the unicorn, witch, and angel books in this series.

Even better Than I Hoped.......2002-07-18
Although this book bears the legend `The Rise And Fall Of The KKK In Middle America' it's really the story of the rise and fall of charismatic Grand Dragon David Stephanson and the Klan of Indiana. Of course, that is not a bad thing, because the story is quite fascinating, and as the author deftly points out, still relevant today.
Stephenson, something of a near do well, finds success and almost unlimited power through the newly reborn KKK of the twenties. Although he seemed to have little use for the philosophy that drove the organization he still was able to use it to propel him to a position of prominence similar to political bosses like Tweed or like minded populists like Huey Long. He even dreamed of one day becoming President, and according to some accounts, a strong man in the style of Mussolini.
The Klan of the twenties had little relation to either its predecessors or it's ancestors of today, except for the ceremonies, the hood and the hatred. In fact, they had more in common with Christian right groups like The Moral Majority. The Klan of the twenties, modern sympathizers may want to note, was more concerned with the dangers of papists than of blacks. Indeed, the anti-catholic nature of the Klan was the probably the predominate feature of the organization, and one of the reasons they opposed Democratic President aspirant Al Smith. The other reason of course was `demon rum'. We tend to forget the importance of wets and drys in the era of prohibition, but the KKK of the 20s were as much about moral crusading and nationalism as Catholic bashing. Made up of WASPs of the fundamentalist persuasion, they attempted to impose their moral values on everyone, much like right wingers today, and much like right wing groups today, their leader failed to live up to the diktat's he wished to impose on others.
Stephenson, himself a drunk and slut, fell from grace after causing the demise of a young girl whom he desired. He kidnapped her, he raped her, he bit her viciously and did not bother to get her help when she took poison in response to his amorous attentions. Stephenson's minions mostly abandoned him at this point, except those that denied it ever took place. Indeed, despite his overt threats, even the politicians that he owned were willing to be exposed rather than defend him. One might think that moral crusaders of our own time could learn a lesson from this true-life parable, but that is perhaps asking too much.

"The Dragon In The Lake".......2005-04-25
I fought with my husband as to whom was going to get to read "The Dragon In the Lake first!"
It is an exciting book about pre-columbian finds in a lake called Rock Lake in Wisconsin. The author, Eschborn walks you through a process of discovery making the book a real page turner!
Not only is it exciting, it is informative and superbly written.
I couldn't put it down! This book would make an excellent movie.
After reading it, As a diver I am now compelled to visit this Lake and attempt to do some cold water diving with my husband, a Dive Instructor.
Dragon in the Lake Best Yet!.......2005-03-02
I've just finished The Dragon in the Lake, the story of the "structures" under and near Rock Lake, Wisconsin. This story has fascinated me ever since acquiring property on Rock Lake about nine years ago. Having read Frank Joseph's books: "The Lost Pyramids of Rock Lake" and "Atlantis in Wisconsin"as well as hearing and meeting Dr. James Scherz, this book by Archie Eschborn is the best explanation yet of the ancient structures which lie beneath Rock Lake. It is very readable, understandable, and "connects the dots" for me. Finally, we are presented with actual evidence that other works have lacked regarding Rock Lake's ties with Mesoamerica, the early Aztecs, and the archeological history of an ancient Pre-Columbian era.
Now, it becomes the job of the Wisconsin Historical Society to follow the evidence where it leads and PROTECT Rock Lake as the archeological wonder that it is. To do any less is a travesty.
Mr. Eschborn has written a remarkable, concise and accurate book which, for me, takes the guesswork out of understanding. It is with the greatest privledge that I highly recommend reading The Dragon in the Lake as one of the most fascinating reads ofmy lifetime. It's magnificent.

Local History Lesson.......2005-01-11
This is an indepth research work on Rock Lake Wiscinson that is easy for the layman to read and understand. It is clear that Archie Eschborn has a passion for the preservation of this major site and it is equally clear that he has identified his major antagonist in his goal to attain this preservation. The work is a chronicle of his adventure and you can sense his dedication as you turn the pages. If you have an interest in the history of Wisconsin and have respect for the culture of the earliest inhabitants of this area, this is a MUST READ!!!! It debunks the pre-concevied notions of the "powers that be" and ends with an interesting turn of events. The book will impress you with Archie's depth of knowledge of Rock Lake.

Interesting concept.......2006-07-13
It's a decent read, with Resnick's usual bantering conversations between interesting characters, in this case including historical people. There are some glaring editorial/plot errors. For example, earlier in the book Tall Mountain is clearly described as too large to ride a Blue Nimble, so he has to ride a Landwagon instead; yet later in the book there he is riding a Blue Nimble. And there are a couple of inconsistencies in the military side of things as well. These are things that a good editor would have caught--I'm not familiar with this publisher (Phobos Impact). So these were distractions that made me stop in the middle of the story and say "Wait a minute" and flip back to reread what came before. But aside from that, the story itself was well done, the concept interesting, and overall an enjoyable read from one of my favorite authors, albeit more on the light side.
wonderful alternate history fantasy.......2005-09-08
George Washington sends Daniel Boone to the Ohio wilderness where the frontiersman is to seek his adopted father Chief Blackfish to enlist the Shawnee to the American cause against the British. However, Blackfish is irate with his "son" for escorting settlers onto Shawnee lands; in fact Daniel is banned from the tribal lands. Still the brave frontiersman feels he must make the effort and accompanied by only his minuscule dragon Banshee ventures onto Shawnee territory.
When Daniel arrives at Blackfish's camp, he finds British colonial loyalist Simon Ginty advising the chief. Daniel requests a thousand warriors, but a reluctant Blackfish offers a couple of hundred. Instead his son Gray Eagle provides Daniel with a counter suggestion that they head further west to the land of the giant dragons and tame these potential weapons of mass destruction to use against Cornwallis' army. Boone agrees and the two men accompanied by escaped Indian slave Pompey journey to the land of the giant dragons.
The structure of the wonderful alternate history DRAGON AMERICA is actually four interrelated novellas that flow brilliantly together to enable the audience to feel events including believing mythical creatures are genuine. The above paragraphs only relate the beginning of the book of Daniel, but are followed by fabulous entries starring George Washington, Pompey's book and Ephram Eakins (working on training a different dragon breed). Mike Resnick shows why he is one of the best fantasists writing today as he adds dragons to the Revolutionary War and makes his book seem like a thrilling historical fiction as much as a fantasy.

a multi-cultural children's book.......1999-10-24
I added this book to my project for multi-cultural children's book in the class for children's literature. The text shows how chinese people get ready for New Year and it, inviting poeple home with a lot of food, putting read papaer in the house, or putting on a new clothe. It is so fun to see what they do looking at the colorful pictures. It does not contain historical background in detail;however, it is a good children's book to introduce children to other culture and evoke their interest.

In 1975, she left on one of the last military planes accompanied by her four children and entered a new life as a refugee in the U.S. She ultimately resettled in Western Massachusetts. She then went back to school and obtained her Ph.D. in Francophone literature. After seeing to her children's education she began her academic career and started to teach French in the Five College academic community. She has fulfilled the "American dream" as have her children. In the process she has rediscovered her cultural roots and has helped others to negotiate the same path.

A Dragon Child: Reflections of a Daughter of Annam in America is the story of a Vietnamese Catholic raised within the structure of the French colonial system. Her upbringing was somewhat privileged as the daughter of a provincial administrator in the central highlands of Vietnam. As a child, and later as a young woman, she embraced French culture and aspired to French ideals. She was educated at a French boarding school for the children of the elite. Subsequently she received a degree in French teaching from the University of Saigon and became a lycee teacher and administrator.
