Customer Reviews:
Ugh.......2007-07-10
I bought this book on a whim to see if it was really as bad as they say. While it does cover a lot of topics, most are glazed over. She also spends pages and pages writing about things unrelated to the subject. It seemed like every sentence had extra words added to it to take up more space. There several instances where for four pages + (this book is pretty large) she typed and typed but managed to say nothing useful at all.
I may be fairly new to this but I'm pretty sure glitter has no place in magick. The book does not talk about the gods and goddess save to provide a rather lame list of deities associated with each pantheon. Over and over again hiding your magickal activities is stressed. While the more important aspects, like being in touch with nature get misplaced behind Acne Removal spells.
This book is definitely meant for teens.
Her use of long repetitive phrases really bothers me because it seems like half the book is just filler. Not to mention the history being off and the almost total omission of deity.
Don't buy this book.
A "Victim".......2007-07-02
This is a review about all of Silver Ravenwolf's "To Ride a Silver Broomstick" and its sequels and her BOS-Encyclopedia book.
Until today, I never realized the ineffectiveness of Silver Ravenwolf's books. I am 16. I have read/owned her books since I was 11. When my (christian) aunt came into my room about one week ago when I was playing with my cousins, my immediate reaction was "Oh no, she's going to think I'm corrupting her children with what she thinks is a 'Satanic, evil' religion." When I reflected upon my reaction, I realized I was judging my aunt, and Christianity, and that I, I was the one who was being judgmental and persecuting her. Silver Ravenwolf's books do slam Christians. I totally bought into her slander. Who doesn't want to feel better than one third of the world, more enlightened than one third of the world? Everyone wants to feel like they know secrets that other people do not. Everyone wants to be "right." I was/am no exception. If you want tolerance, it is not in these books, although they preach tolerance.
I have also come away with a paranoid attitude toward Wicca/Witchcraft. I feel like it is forbidden, hated by society. Silver Ravenwolf encourages teens to hide their practice from people for fear of persecution. Maybe she is right, but I feel scared to even TALK about it. That is not an attitude that anyone should have about divinity or their chosen religion.
Also, if you asked me to define "Wicca" or "Witchcraft" I would give you a very vague answer. I do not know the difference - what have I been practicing?! I could tell you some stuff about paganism, but not Wicca.
Well, I have begun studying ceremonial magic out of "Modern Magic" by Donald Michael Kraig. I have not read any reviews of the book, but I feel like I finally have an idea what I am supposed to be feeling in the rituals I perform. Kraig is very clear about what is factual history and what is mythical "history." With Ravenwolf, spellcasting techniques were so vague that I felt I had no solid base to work from.
The only way to practice a religion is the way it is meant to be practiced, not any way you feel like it. Even Wicca, a new religion, does have core beliefs that need to be adhered to. You can't just study the occult in general and consider yourself Wiccan or a Witch.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER. YOU WILL ONLY GET WRONG AND VAGUE INFORMATION. I WAS MISLED BY HER BOOKS.
It's a helpfull book.......2007-06-30
I love the book.
Some people said that is complicate. But what in the live is not? Is more easy if you read the other book of the author
My firsth language is not english but I don't think that the vocabulary is too complicate.
Perfect for those who grew up with "Teen Witch" (like I did).......2007-06-20
I'm a big fan of Silver RavenWolf, even though many people really like to trash her style. So her historical information may not be completely, perfectly accurate, or she may not write what everyone wants or expects her to write. I can guarantee that no one's book on The Craft is perfect, and Ms Ravenwolf is no exception. But what she never fails to do is to encourage her reader to follow their heart. Although the information in _Solitary Witch_ is mainly aimed at the college-aged group (those who grew up with _Teen Witch_ and now are adults), the information and rituals in this tome are beneficial to practicioners of all ages. I highly enjoy this book, although I believe that it could have been organized a bit better. Overall, it is a perfect book for those who have progressed past _Teen Witch_ and are hungry for the next step up.
Solitary Witch: The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation.......2007-05-29
I admit to being a fan of Silver Raven Wolf. I am enjoying this one every bit as much as her others. There is a wealth of information that is simultaneously mystical and practical.

Great book in the Feist tradition.......2007-06-27
Great new series for Feist fans with great characters and secrets that are slowly told throughout the series.
A good read.... .......2007-04-27
As per the other reviews, if you've read Feist before, you easily slip back into this book and its characters, although not his best still very enjoyable .
So sit back relax and escape for a while.
A new part of Midkemia, familiar old characters, and new characters who are somehow also familiar.......2007-02-22
Without a doubt, Raymond E. Feist (RF) is one of the more prolific and successful authors of modern fantasy. He exploded onto the scene in the 1980's with his "RiftWar" trilogy (or quadrilogy, depending on who you talk to), deepened the mythology of his fantasy world of Midkemia with the next series (the "SerpentWar" quadrilogy), and further developed his universe with several peripheral books and a peripheral series which nevertheless still connected back to his primary works.
This author has unequalled skill in several literary techniques: the subgenre of horror-fantasy; breathless and exciting depictions of all aspects of medieval combat, especially swordplay and siege warfare; fantastic ability to believable write through the eyes of one downtrodden or through adolescent eyes; the creation of an aura of wonder and fear as he writes of who truly "pulls levers from behind the curtain"; the doublecross; and philosophical/spiritual ruminations of his main characters.
What RF does not do well: writing believable/unique female characters; writing more than one type of "warrior/hero/peasant upbringing" character; writing more than one type of "knave-with-sharp-wit-and-cunning-nature" character; and letting characters go.
*example/spoiler*
Tomas is Eric von Darkmoor is Talon, and not in the Valheru sense. Jimmy the Hand is Roo is Jimmy the 2nd. Peripheral female characters are essentially only used to "mature" a key male character (if you understand me). I'm a male reader and have always been somewhat dismayed by RF's cardboard depiction of most female characters.
*end example/spoiler*
So, in "Talon Silverhawk" we have the familiar RF device of orphaned boy destined for great things. In this case, Talon's primary goal is to avenge his clan's destruction. Along the way, Talon is scooped up by the Conclave of Shadows, a mysterious organization devoted to combatting a mighty, multidimensional evil. I will not divulge more of the story than that, but suffice it to say that RF "matures" this young man in predictable ways so as to prepare him for his (and the Conclave's) future missions. There is much action, travel to a previously unseen portion of Midkemia, some intrigue, and a new writing element in this RF work: character self-doubt and analysis. That last one almost threw me from my chair, and surprised me enough to grant the book 4 stars instead of 3.
For newcomers to RF who have the time: Start with the RiftWar saga, you'll be glad you did.
For newcomers to RF who don't have the time: Not a terrible place to start, but if you're not willing to see RF's universe for the stars, go watch TV instead.
For longtime RF fans: familiar stuff, with new characters who nevertheless seem old, but enough new plot stuff to satisfy. I mean, c'mon, Nakor's in the book!
Another Feist Winner.......2006-09-07
Having read as many Feist books as I can get my hands on, this one is one of the better series. A book full of revenge, action and battle it keeps you turning the pages.
Out for revenge, Talon seeks vengence on those who destroyed his village. Helped by a stranger in his time in need(who turns out to Pug) he sets out to not only pay back his friend for his help, but to set to right the wrong done his people.
Great Feist.
Good enough.......2006-07-17
This is the first book I have read by Feist.
In it, a boy is waiting in the mountains for a vision that will reveal his "man name" to him so that he can return to his people a man. He returns to find his village massacred and almost dies himself.
After that this book becomes revenge obsessed. Talon of the Silver Hawk (his man name) must take revenge for his people but is also indebted to the man that saved his life and must serve him.
Alright, enough plot summary, the rest you can find out by reading the book.
This was a pretty good book. I read it quickly and enjoyed it. However, it is nothing extraordinary and if you're bored: read it. If you don't read it, fine, you're not missing out on any thing very special.
My verdict: Good only if you have nothing else to read or do. Definatley get it from the library.
Oh and I just have to add that the relationships "Talon" gets into with females in this book seem really contrived. He must have been one good looking 15 year old to have women throwing themselves at him like that.

Customer Reviews:
Great Story.......2007-09-16
Elaine Cunningham does a wonderful job in this book as all the other reviewers before me have surely said. And it is a little late for me to review this book i guess you can say, but I must tell you that I have gotten a late start in reading forgotten realms novels, and I have caught up and am an avid reader of these novels as well.
Back to the reciew of Silver Shadows, this book shows the quest that Arilyn undertakes independently of Danilo Thann. If you are reading this book, you have surely read Elfsong, and that is the book that describes Danilo's quest for the harpers. Elaine is a great story teller and from first point on is able to apprehend your attention and take you through Arilyn's journey of her self and for the harpers and the elves of evermeet. In addition throughout this quest, you see the maturity of Arilyn as a person since Elfshadow.
Overall Elaine Cunningham is one of my favourite authors of the realms, and this book is one of the various Forgotten Realms books i would recommend.
Tour de force..........2007-03-26
After many boring and sometimes offensive perspectives of the Forgotten Realms, I finally come to Silver Shadows. It is one of the best fantasy tales I have ever read. Ms Cunningham has her hands on the pulse of Faerun as the story begins where her others left off. This one completely envelopes and compliments Elfsong and doesnt need to be read in sequence. The publisher like series or trilogies. This is both for marketing and in most cases, rewrites of Lord of the Rings. "There is gold in them dungeons!"
This book was the last big published effort by old TSR. A name that strikes fear and excitement in the publishing industry. Most of the time, pulp is the result. This author was the exception. While Ed Greenwood created the Forgotten Realms, he has some problems telling his stories! This is a wonderful setting with infinite possibilities. Most guest authors bring hack-saws to it. This title shines with a timeless appeal and original plot that is hard to beat.
Arilyn Moonblade was introduced in Elfshadow in 1991. Her temperment is not appealing as the story unfolds, yet her spirit makes her likeable. The adventure she undertakes is engrossing and highly imaginable. It seems to come beyond the Realms and into the very heart of the meaning of "fairy tale". Tolkien is left out of the picture, which seems to be a problem for other authors of this setting. Humor and Fun are highlights of this thrilling tale, that itself would make a great movie in the proper hands. The bad guys are loathesome and the Elves are a delight. Oh, I almost forgot a nice dragon thrown in.
Ms Cunningham has exceptional skills at creating a world that is filled with whimsy, light romance, laughter, and totally engrossing battle scenes! Now if only the rest of the authors could be this good!
A fine continuation of a noble series.......2006-11-10
Yet again Arylyn Moonblade is off to adventure, but this time at the behest of the Queen of Evermeet?! In this book we go from one suprise to yet another as Arylyn finds herself in trying times even as her associate (Danilo Thann) has his own adventure in the second book of the series. This really is a great book for anyone who loves stories involving elves and heroic selfless deeds. It is a good read and worth the money.
WELL DONE Elaine Cunningham-AGAIN!!!.......2004-06-19
Arilyn Moonblade is back! The half-elf Harper finds herself involved in another adventure in the lands of Tethyr this time, tying to save Green (Wild) elves from Zhentilar deserters.
The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Elaine Cunnigham has truly outdone herself once again and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
She has done a FANTASTIC job of keeping a balance between what is suitable to young readers and what to adults! Subtle hints such as "Omnivore" Ferret/Amulet of underwater Breathing in the Mistress Penelope's Baths and Garvanell's "payment" is exactly what many of us fans out there who are now in our 30's would like to see more of-something a bit more spicy than the usual. From the moment you pick up the book you have trouble putting it down and if that is not a clear sign of a fantastic writer/author and a great plot, I don't know what is!
Elves, Zhents, assassins, Duty, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about. A great trilogy indeed with Elfsong and Elfshadow and a "must read" along with Evermeet! One should seriously start thinking about maybe turning them into movies... DON'T MISS IT!!!
Wonderfully Written... Horribly Edited.......2003-08-20
This was an amazing book. Elaine Cunningham lets readers into Arilyn's complicated mind and the strange powers of the Moonblade become more apparent and it's demands worsen upon it's half-elven bearer. I enjoyed every page of this book, the plot, characters and setting were masterfully put on paper but...
You might wonder why I only gave 4 stars when this book's plot and characters are obviously 5-star material. While Elaine did an amazing job for this book whoever edited it did not. I am no english grammar whiz but still there were obvious mistakes that should never have been printed. For example, on one page a halflings name is Sandusk and on the next it is Suldusk. Also, the land which this tale takes place in is named Tethyr, it says so in the map in the front of the book but throughout the pages it is misspelled, one sentance it is Tethyr and on the next line (really!) it's spelled Tethir. I know these are just annoyances but that's it!
I enjoyed the premise and style of this book, I love the way Elaine Cunningham writes but I was thoroughly annoyed by the editorial mistakes.
A 5 star book
A 3 star editing job
Please overlook the bad editors and read what Elaine Cunningham is saying, it's a wonderful book, please read.

Illustrated with black-and-white archival prints, drawings, and photographs From the simple camera obscura of the 1500s to the 17th century's giant magic lanterns to the early films of Thomas Edison and the Lumire brothers in the late 1800s, here is an intriguing story of invention and showmanship. Many of the techniques adopted by Hollywood were worked out by tinkerers, lanternists, and magicians in front of shocked and amazed audiences long before the first flickering black-and-white film was ever shown. This fascinating book explains how today's moviesas well as photographs, special effects, and animationcame to be. Peppered with first-hand accounts and newspaper reports, excerpts from the notes of early inventors and filmmakers, and descriptions and diagrams of detailed optical gadgets, Before Hollywood provides a window into the world of entertainment before movies were invented. It offers an illustrated tour of the beginnings of technologies that we take for granted today. Sidebars, afterword, timeline, endnotes, bibliography, Internet resources, and index.
Book Description
Sean O'Casey Plays 2, introduced by Arthur Miller, documents O'Casey's transition from realism to his use of expressionism and symbolism.
The Shadow of the Gunman and The Plough with Stars, two installments in the Dublin Trilogy, give a realistic look at life in the slums of Dublin. Meanwhile, The Silver Tassie, originally rejected by William Bulter Yeats (director of the Abbey Threatre), is a tragicomedy based on the cruel horrors of World War I. It shows the price which the common people have to pay for the stupidities of war. Purple Dust and Hell and Healing are also included in this volume which show O'Casey's use of expressionism and symbolism.

Romance+mystery+the supernatural=a fun and exciting read.......1997-03-23
Kyra Kirtland returns to Park City, Utah, the city she was born in, to work on a restoration project. However, Kyra does not realize that her past has come back to haunt her in Park City. It is here that her biological mother gave her away to save her life from a deadly threat. It is here that she must come to grips with Mac Connor, her former fiance, who dumped her without providing her a good reason. Mac left her, just like her mother had done, to save her life. Mac's former partner blames him for the death of his own fiance and vows to kill Mac's loved ones. So though he loves Kyra, he will destroy that love before allowing any harm to fall to her. ...... Kyra also has to contend with the SILVER SHADOW, a supernatural entity who has vowedl to obtain eternal vengeance on all descendants of Hallie Stern, the individual who killed him. When the last of the "Sterns " is dead, the Shadow will regain his mortality. In the nearby mountain lies the souls of many people and a bitter soul-keeper. As Mac starts an environmental cleanup, it seems doubtful that the love between Kyra and Mac will be enough to survive the SILVER SHADOW. ....... Though a bit uneven due to too many sub-plots, THE SILVER SHADOW is an excellent supernatural romance that grips readers from the very first page to the very last sentence of the book. Kyra is a likable character and readers will embrace Mac even though he is a bit too noble. Sylvie Kurtz brings a freshness that will please fans of the sub-genre. .......Harriet Klausner

A family obsessed by old movies. At dinner they play clips of old movies to communicate with each other rather than speaking. They act out parts of movies, even using real swords to fight with. They own a huge collection of movies and they rarely leave the house. Their whole lives are the movies. Weird but interesting.
