Three Silly Chicks Review.......2007-10-02
Reviewed by Three Silly Chicks -- Readers, Writers, and Reviewers of funny books for kids.
Emily Brown loves Stanley and Stanley loves Emily Brown. Emily is a little girl and Stanley is an old gray rabbit. They are best friends. Best adventurers. Best EVERYTHING. Life is great for this pair until the Queen "kindly" notices Stanley and decides she must have him for her own. She tries to bribe Emily Brown with a teddy bear, talking dolls, rocking horses, and all the toys Emily could ever desire. Emily will have none of it and when that spoiled, greedy Queen goes too far and kidnaps Stanley, Emily marches right back to the castle to get him back. Nobody steals Stanley and gets away with it!
Layton combines a mix of art styles using childlike illustrations and photos of the jungle, sea and sky to bring us into Emily and Stanley's world. Emily's fierce devotion and loyalty to Stanley in this delightful book will ring true with anyone who ever had a rabbit (or teddy bear or stuffed cat or . . .) of their own.
My classroom loves it!.......2007-09-01
I teach preschool and my classroom loves this book! It keeps them captivated throughout every page! The light repetition lets them know what's coming next and invites them to read along but isn't overbearing and boring.
for a child with a very special stuffed animal.......2007-06-18
This is a wonderful story for a child who has a very special stuffed animal. She won't give it up to the queen despite offers of new toys, etc. In the end she shares her knowledge so the queen can make her own toy "special"

Missing Chimes.......2007-07-28
I love the read along books for my pre-reader, but this one doesn't have the chimes telling her to turn the page. She needs help every couple of minutes finding what page the recording is on.
Needs more variety of voices.......2007-05-12
While my kids enjoy listening to the stories that they know so well, they get bored easily since with the voice never changing. They don't use the various character voices in telling the story as they do in other disney CDs that we have. The songs and poems that are on the CD sound silly even to my kids who always ask me to skip those--they should have used a song from the movie if they wanted to include music on the CD. I'd recommend the Disney read-along CDs over this as those use character voices and are more interesting/dramatic to listen to.
Disney cd.......2007-03-08
Great book with CD. My grandaughter love it. She can pick her story. Real Disney storyline.
I love it and my kids love it!.......2006-08-11
I have bought all of the CD Storybooks and they have all been well worth the money. I will continue to buy them as they become available. However the one thing that I wish they would get back to is having the stories read by the actual characters themselves. The first Winnie the Pook storybook and the storybook with Bugs Life, Monsters Inc and Toys Story 1 & 2 all were read with the voices of the actual characters. It was great! Then when I bought the new ones it's a womans voice for every character and the narrator. Guess we are just spoiled. It's still worth the money and I would recommend them to anyone who wants a little peace and quiet in the car! tee hee
My son LOVES it!.......2005-09-11
I felt compelled to review this, because unlike two of the other reviewers, I LIKE that there is no indication to "turn the page." The book is good, but the audio CD is even better. My son got one of these (actually slightly different, it has the "Nemo" story on it and one other that is different) for his 3rd birthday, and wants to listen to it EVERY night while he is falling asleep. I was looking on amazon to buy another one (with different stories). The woman's voice who is the narrator is very pleasant. I think it would be very annoying if there was a "beep" or "turn the page" indicator on the CD, especially for those children, like my son, who like to listen to it as a bedtime story.

Customer Reviews:
Wow! Definitely a surprise.......2004-03-04
Alright to explain the title of my review. This book was a surprise for me because it is one of the few books that have a main political twist to it that I still actually enjoyed reading. The characters in this are great especially some of the ones that are hardly even in it. I don't want to give away to much but the title basically speaks for itself. Gilthas is a young elf being manipulated by Rashas an evil qualinesti senator.
Niles definitely knows how to develop his villains. I mean I actually ended up really hating Rashas and the silvanesti general. Even though this book may deal a lot with the political aspect of the elvish society there is still plenty of action. And not all of the politics are boring either. Niles is definitely one of the better authors in Dragonlance and this book is definitely worth the money/time spent on it.
Chaos strikes Qualinesti!!.......2002-10-13
While the title leaves much to be desired - and in fact makes you weary of the book - this is a good book, detailing the time surrounding The Chaos War in Qualinest.
This novel has it all: treachery, plotical intrique & plenty of action but it isn't neccessarily about Porthios vs Gilthas has the review leads you to believe. Give this one a read. BTW, it ends with a twist. I'd still like to know what events transpired in Silvanesti.
A rich and exciting read..........2002-06-04
"The Puppet King" but Douglas Niles is a book full of action, politics, exitement, and everything else you could possibly want in a Dragonlance novel. This book is strangely set up, being that it is told like a story, but that doesnt take away from the read. The story itself follows many different points of view. It follows the exiled elf, Porthios. It follows the young and troubled Speaker of the Suns, Gilthas. And even follows the thoughts of a massive green dragon.
This book is full of Dragonlance goodness. Not only is the story an exciting read, but the characters are nicely developed. This book is set during the Chaos War, The same time as Margeret Wies'and Tracy Hickman's great book "Dragons of Summer Flame." It is nice to see the inner workings of the elven society, and see heroes rise up from unlikely places. This book is a must for any Dragonlance fan to read and enjoy.
For a book that is not about Raistlin, it's really good.......2001-10-18
To be honest, wasn't expecting much from this book. I only read it because I was hoping for more info about how Qualinesti handeled the Choas War. I was really inpressed. The plot is excellent, and apparently, I was the only one who liked the characters. Gilthnas was surprisingly well written, but I would have liked to see more emotion in him. I really like the parts about Gilthnas and his Kagonesti wife. I reccommend this book to everyone.
Hold the Horses.......2001-08-12
Whoa, Whoa, Whoa. Correct me if I'm wrong here but I don't believe this book holds true to Dragons of a Fallen Sun. I am going to ruin the ending right here so if you are planning to read this book continue to a different review. At the end we see Porthios fall off his gryphon and his face becomes dissfigured by the Chaos Dragons flame. Then he is taken to the wilderness by the wilder elves never to be seen again. In the new WOS series by the great W&H the exiled king has now grown a new face and he is communicating to his wife Alahna. Please if i am wrong someone inform me of my mistake, but if I happen to be correct please in the future can the writers of Dragonlance keep their stories straight.
Book Description
A paper princess once lived happily with the little girl who made her. But now the girl has grown up and left the princess under a paperweight. It's safe there, but the paper princess longs to grow and change, too. The princess must choose: safety or unknown adventure? Kleven's luminous collage art offers perfect visual storytelling for this many-faceted, transforming journey.

Great Book!!!.......2007-06-07
My child and I loved this book, It inspired her so much she wanted to make her own paper doll just like the paper princess! we did. Highly recommended!!!!
Wonderful interweaving of nature and fantasy.......2005-04-13
My children and I were enchanted by this book. We love the author's ability to blend imaginary elements -- talking paper dolls, toys and animals -- with real and inspiring facts from nature, namely the migration of Monarch butterflies. The passages which show the paper princess abandoned in the discarded Christmas tree, enduring the harsh winter, awakening in spring, and finally being rescued by the Monarchs "one late summer day...when the leaves are flying like tiny kites" are especially moving. This tale both feeds our imaginations and stimulates our awe for the animal kingdom. Sharing this beautiful and unique book would be a great way to introduce Monarchs in the classroom.
Wonderful and Inspiring!!.......2003-11-06
The Paper Princess Finds Her Way is an absolutely wonderful and inspiring book. Even though "It can be a hard world for small fragile things," the paper princess knows she must change because the world around her has changed. She boldly takes on the challenges of the hard world and finds adventure, beauty and newness. Elisa's writing is wonderfully illustrative; I could clearly imagine the cat who "smiled a sharp cat smile" or the butterflies that "travelled, a magic carpet of sunlit wings." The story made me laugh, smile and think about the beauty in life and the beauty of change. This book is not just for children. However, my eight year old was just as enthralled as I.
"Wait! I want to look at the picture," he urged, not wanting to be rushed before he read the page. The illustrations in The Paper Princess Finds Her Way are intimate and full of details that tell their own stories such as birthday parties or a child
cooking with her grandma. As with Elisa's other books, studying the pictures is much of the fun and I'd become absorbed in the small village or living room on the page. I highly recommend this book for children's libraries, home libraries and all elementary school classrooms.
Another Magical Kleven Tale.......2003-10-22
AT LAST! More adventures about the brave and friendly, soulful paper princess making her way from her (now grown up) creator to the hand of another artistic child in Mexico. What a wonderful antidote to the mass consumer society we live in today. It is definitely a story to cherish and the illustrations are beyond this world! Kleven's illustrations of the Monarch butterflies in flight are mystical and left me hoping for more. Hooray for our brave princess and may her own creator, Elisa Kleven, bless us with more delightful and heartfelt stories!!

Precious, whimsical story!.......2006-10-05
The Paper Princess loves a little girl named Lucy who is good to the princess and her dog. When they find out that there is to be a fiesta later in the day, they set out to do something nice for Lucy. As the princess and her dog fly on the wind in search of the perfect gift, they encounter many adventures and only by a stroke of good fortune are returned to their little girl. Though they weren't able to bring her much in the way of a physical gift, the princess and her dog gave Lucy what she loves best of all: their adventure story.
The Paper Princess Flies Again (with Her Dog) is a precious, whimsical story. The colorful and lively illustrations blend seamlessly with the text to produce a wonderful tale. I also enjoyed that this story is set outside of the American cultural norm. This is not the first of the Paper Princess tales, but that fact doesn't detract from the story. It only leaves me and my children hoping to pick up the other Paper Princess titles.
Armchair Interviews says: A delightful, entertaining read.
The paper princess (and her dog) seek a present for their girl Lucy.......2006-01-06
Elisa Kleven explains on the back flap of "The Paper Princess Flies Again (with her Dog!)" than when she finished reading "The Paper Princess Finds Her way" to a group of children they asked her what would happened next to the princess and her new paper dog. She wrote and illustrated this third story in the series to find out and to "inspire children to draw their own paper characters and to give those characters stories and worlds." After reading this book I have little doubt that Kleven has succeeded in her objective.
This enchanting story is set in Mexico, where a girl named Lucy loves a paper princess who is not thicker than a leaf but who is full of stories. Although the paper princess has traveled far from the girl who first drew her and the boy who gave her wings, she now has a dress like the sky and a dog. Lucy agrees he is a good dog, but since he looks a little plain she decides to paint him a colorful jacket. The dog does not think he needs a jacket given his warm brown coat, but then Lucy explains he needs it because they are going to have a fiesta that night. In appreciation for the coming party, the princess and her dog decide they should find something nice for Lucy. But when they find a red paper flag that they imagine to be a flying carpet, it whisks them up into the air and off into a new adventure.
Traveling on a kite, a tumbleweed, and a sailboat, the paper princess and her dog end up in a surprising place to make Lucy's fiesta quite memorable. Kleven's artwork consists of beautiful multi-media collages that bring alive her characters. "The Paper Princess Flies Again (with her Dog!)" represents both the desire of children to venture out and discover the world as well as the joy of returning to a warm and loving home (especially when there is a new dress and a crown or a new jacket involved). Granted, in the 21st century the idea of making a paper princess or anything else you can think of seems rather quaint, but that is probably why this book is so charming. Kleven works in so many varied textures, shapes and colors into her artwork (look at all the details in the two-page spread of the desert and the ocean) that you cannot imagine her young readers not being inspired to follow suit.
I love this book!.......2005-10-31
This is the latest in the adventures of the paper princess and it's as wonderful as the other two. I love the character of the dog and how the princess' cheerful and brave optimism plays against his more timid nature. It's a great book to read aloud and my kids were totally taken in by the story and cheered at the ending. We also love the two earlier books and they've become favorites that we read over and over again (my two year old now "reads" them to himself). Each of the three books has a very distinctive plot so they don't suffer from being bland imitations of each other. It's a rare author who can take a character and expand her world as successfully as Elisa Kleven does. We can't wait for the princess' next adventure!
Third Grade girl.......2005-09-17
I like all Elisa's Kleven's books. They are great stories. I really like this one because there is a dog in it.

A history lesson wrapped in a great book.......2005-02-13
I ordered this book from my daughters book order form, it was just great. It was a great way to tell her about a time she knew nothing about and how mistreated these people were. She felt so sorry for them. Telling it through the dolls perception was a great tool to utilize... just excellent would recommend to all...
Sally's tale.......2005-01-01
"Almost to Freedom," by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson, is illustrated by Colin Bootman. The story is set during the era of American slavery. The book's narrator is Sally, a black rag doll owned by Lindy, a slave girl on a Virginia plantation. Through Sally's eyes we see the odyssey of Lindy and her family.
The story is told in vernacular English; for example, Sally declares, "Bein' Lindy's doll baby is a right important job." The atmospheric, colorful illustrations effectively enhance the emotions of the story.
Particularly interesting is an "Author's Note" at the end of the book in which Nelson explains how she was inspired to write this story. Telling the story from the doll's point of view is a memorable and effective device which contributes greatly to the success of this moving and beautifully illustrated book. "Almost to Freedom" is a powerful use of African-American history in a children's book.
Telling a story honestly and with verve.......2004-02-07
Some stories have to be told over and over, every which way possible, in order to drill their history home. Vaunda Micheaux Nelson has penned an exciting tale of escape and freedom, set before the Civil War. Children's picture books that follow the lives of slaves always run the risk of watering down their material. It is exceedingly difficult to tell a story about slavery to little kids without making light of the nasty aspects of it. In this book, however, Nelson has adeptly told a story of escape through the eyes of a rag doll owned by a little runaway slave girl. She has done this without compromising any of the uglier aspects of the time, while softening the point of view to that of an inanimate object.
Matching Nelson's sure-footed storytelling come the illustrations of Colin Bootman. His painting style uses thick oils and paints that somehow manage to convey emotion and depth. And just for the record, the father of the little girl who owns the doll is probably one of the hottest men ever to grace the pages of a picture book. I'm not kidding. Go out, find this book, look at her dad, and tell me he's not absolutely drop dead gorgeous. Wowzer.
In and of itself, this book is well-made but not extraordinary. However, Nelson has included a couple instructional tidbits at the back of the book for further contemplation and understanding. In an author's note, she tells how she came up with the idea of the story. Kids can see a photograph of a real black rag doll form the 1800s. Then Nelson explains what the Underground Railroad was and how it worked. Finally, a glossary of terms that kids might not be familiar with (dear = expensive) is included for a final considerate touch. It is not a book that will necessarily blow you away, but "Almost to Freedom" accomplishes the difficult task of telling a fearful story in a manner appropriate for the young. No small task.
Wonderful story!.......2003-09-12
This story will bring many a tear to your eye. It is a wonderful story that shows children what it was like to run away from slavery. Good story and great illustrations!
Excellent readaloud picture book.......2003-09-02
Nelson, an accomplished storyteller, brings young readers and listeners an exceptional story of the Underground Railroad. Sally is a rag doll belonging to Lindy, a slave child. She has a "right important job" as comfort and companion to Lindy throught the hardships of slavery and her family's flight to freedom. Sally is lost on the trip, and after a lonely, weary time, she becomes comfort and companion to another slave child. The illustrations by Colin Bootman are stunning, capturing the warmth and drama of the story. Another fine tale adding to Nelson's award-winning work.

An awesome book!.......2005-04-29
Ventriloquism Made Easy, by Kolby King, is a well written book, which "covers it all"! This is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who is seriously considering taking up ventriloquism! Kolby takes you through the basics of ventriloquism, in a well written, fun-filled book, that is WELL WORTH READING!!
Save Your Money, Folks!.......2004-10-15
This book teaches ventriloquism about as well as a three-page pamphlet teaches nuclear physics. Sure, you will learn a trick or two, but I'd hate to perform with only this knowledge under my belt!
And why, WHY do some authors insist on injecting their personal religious beliefs into what are supposed to be secular works? Evangelize in a book written to that purpose, please! About 2000 years ago someone said something about praying quietly and privately in one's own room . . .
If you want to be a ventriloquist, there are plenty of sources far superior to this pap. Look for them.
not worth it.......2004-02-17
Has only a tiny section on the really important stuff about the hard letters. The rest is padding. I'm going to look for something more serious.
Great.......2003-01-29
I think that this book is great for beginers because it teaches basic stuff to advanced stuff. If there was anyone that was interested in becoming a ventriloquist this is the right book for you.
Great book for The Absolute Beginner.......2002-07-26
Cheery and breezy, this well written, easy to understand book takes you from your first exercises on how to talk without moving your lips, to dealing with the "problem letters" (W, P, B, M, and F) to advanced techniquies such as the distant voice and echoed voice, to writing your own scripts and preparing for performance. Along the way. Mr. King provides you with several routines that you can use to sharpen and refine your skills as well as advice on giving your best when performing. Highly recommended, indeed!
