Water Dragon.......2000-05-22
I thought this book was very helpful. It contained very important and reliable information. While the information was somewhat limited you should easily be able to find other information on the internet. The pictures were spectacular. They give you a feel of how a healthy Water Dragon should look and how a sickly Water Dragon should appear. If you are planning to purchase this book you might also have to look just a little for other more specific information. However if you want the basics on how to care for a Water Dragon I beleive that this book will be very helpful for you.
There are better water dragon care guidelines.......2000-03-30
The overall basic information in this book is correct, but given that there are 2 species of water dragon, 3 Basilisk, and one Sailfin Lizard species discussed on only 15 text pages, and the remaining 35 pages consisting of caging, diet and health topics for all 6 lizard types, with commercial products suggested for use scattered throughout this section, I find this book to be too minimal to really help anyone but the newest of lizard keepers - and these new lizard keepers just might be better off with a book that goes into more detail.
Philippe de Vosjoli's "The general care and maintenance of Green water dragons, Sailfin lizards, and Basilisks" or Bartlett & Bartlett's "Anoles, Basilisks, and Water Dragons" would be better books for a new lizard keeper to start out with.
This book has a lot of pictures in it - 70 +, and while some of the lizard photographs are beautiful, many show stressed or ill looking lizards with captions that describe the pics as being a normal appearing or healthy lizard.

A different path.......2007-04-07
If you're looking for a continuation of the Wrinkle series, you're not going to find it here. However, L"Engle writes as eloquently as always. The Arm of the Starfish comes before Dragons though and it would be good to read it first. Starfish, Dragons, and Lotus are definitely geared toward teen girls in my opinion and would be great for intelligent girls looking for the right answers in this confusing world.
Definetly a good read.......2006-03-16
Poly O'Keefe is pretty much the main character in this mystery. Unlike some of L'Engle's books, this does follow relations of her best known books, the Time Quartet (in which A Wrinkle in Time is found, amoung others), as Poly is the daughter of Meg Murry and Calvin O'Keefe. It is also definetly appropriate for the younger crowd. Yes, some of her books you may want to look at first, although all of them are beautiful and none are crude. She is simply a complex writer who doesn't sugar coat life.
Fantastic, Mysterious, and Thoughtful, but not Fantastical.......2005-01-15
Quite different than most of the books in the O'Keefe-Murray realm... But intriguing none theless.
A great mystery, and something that I couldn't put down.
It's geared towards younger readers, but I still appreciated it alot.
There's some beautiful wording in there, that only L'Engle can manage.
No dragon, no fire, decent story........2004-05-17
I didn't find any of the characters in this story really came to life. L'Engle told us what they were like, but didn't really show us, it seemed to me, so they remained undeveloped.
The basic plot is interesting, though as developed it tends to morander and jump, meander and jump. A young teenage boy, an orphan who lives with his old grandmother, is taken by a long-lost cousin on a voyage to Venezuala, where his ancestor lived with a mysterious tribe of healers, and his Indian lover. L'Engle manages to combine the "noble savage" tradition with a bit of "capitalist exploitation," without stereotyping too much on either side. One of L'Engle's strengths is her interest in science and the ecology of village life. The story goes at cruise-ship velocity at sea -- slowly, I mean -- and it would be helpful if the characters all wore name-cards, to keep them straight. All the elements for a good story are present, but fail somehow through lack of vivifying detail. Still, L'Engle does tend to see things differently, and that makes the story fairly interesting.
A little help??.......2002-12-02
No, i didn't read this book but i'd love to...if i understood the back a little more!! :) If anyone could write something however you want to do it and tell me (this may sound rediculis) if the O'Keef family is speaking of Meg and Calvin and all of them?? I want to read this if i just knew a little more...

Great story, but kinda hard to read.......2006-04-17
I am not exactly an expert on writing, but I have read my fair share of Fiction. I found the book to have a great storyline, that kept me reading well past the time I entended to go to bed, but found the parts told by N'Doch (which were told in present tense) slightly hard to read. I am usually open to all kinds of writing styles, but I found those parts a little disappointing, especially with the parts told by Erde being 3rd person.
Unlike many other people who read the book, and found N'Doch's Character disappointing, I didn't. One of the things that I enjoied most about the Dragon Quartet books was that Kellogg keeps it real, like with Rainar in The Book of Earth, N'Doch's character is more of what we actually find in life.
Overall I enjoied the book, and cannot wait to read the next in the series.
Book of Water .......2005-02-05
A very good series of books earth water and fire. If you like fantasy about dragon this is these are the book to read can't wait till the last one comes out just ordered it and am excited.
Much less engaging than the first entry in the series.......2004-06-30
The Book of Water, the second novel in the Dragon Quartet, is an exceedingly different novel than its predecessor The Book of Water. This is largely explained by the fact that the setting has changed from the Germanies of 913 to an African country in the year 2013. Admittedly, I was deeply rooted into the Middle Ages account of the first book and very much in harmony with young Erde and the Dragon Earth. So, so much seemed to happen in that novel. The Book of Water is exact same number of pages, but very little seemed to happen this time around. The new Dragon Guide we meet here is also very difficult to like, and that above all else diminished the impact of this novel for me personally. Erde went about everything with complete sincerity, but this new Guide, despite Erde's (not to mention two dragons') influences upon him, does not seem to have a sincere bone in his body.
When the world was created, four dragons (Earth, Water, Fire, and Air) were created to do the work, after which point they went to ground, to sleep until this world they had created ended. Now, the dragons are reawakening, answering a summons they do not yet understand and remembering only bits and pieces of their own history. Each of the four books in the series gives us a newly reawakened dragon and his/her Dragon Guide. Water is the older sister of Earth, and her special dragon ability is shape-shifting. Earth and Erde have responded to a summons and jumped from 913 to 2013 to join forces with Water and her guide. N'doch is Erde's exact opposite; there is always a culture clash when a baron's daughter from 913 meets up with a street-smart dreamer from an environmentally abused earth of 2013, but N'doch can never seem to get his head together. In the first several chapters (and this becomes increasingly annoying to the reader), he thinks his introduction to Erde and the two dragons is some kind of Candid Camera setup, and he oftentimes has the remarkable ability to forget, despite the proximity of his new companions, that dragons actually exist - and not just during those times that Water has shape-shifted herself into the image of a human. Each time you think he finally sees the light, he returns to the same selfish person interested only in his own future and dreams, never fully accepting his responsibilities as a dragon guide.
Very little actually happens here, and the action of the second half of the novel is just a little too far "out there" for my tastes. Erde was in constant danger and surrounded by incredibly important acts and events in the first novel, but our main characters here just seem to bumble around, oftentimes with no real sense of purpose, and hide on a few occasions. Without the steadying influence of Erde and Earth, this novel might have developed into a true free-or-all. The author made things a little worse than they could have been by choosing to present N'doch's story from a third person present tense. This seems an entirely unnecessary and sometimes clumsy way to distinguish between the remarkably different perspectives of N'doch and Erde. Thank goodness for Erde's dreams, I must add, as they retain for the reader a strong link to the events still going on in her own time of 913 - that is where the true action and suspense in this series lies - at least so far.
Somewhat thin..........2002-01-09
when compared to The Book of Earth and The Book of Fire (1st & 3rd in the series). I think she moved a bit out of her own element and too far into a cultural theme she wasn't entirely at ease with, based on her constant use of colloquialisms and what seemed to be a rather thin plot line. The Book of Fire, though, makes this one worth wading through in order to get further along in the series. Any idea on when The Book of Air should be coming out?
The dudeman's review on The Book of Water.......2001-12-01
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK!!! Marjorie B. Kellogg is always one to weave issues about our environment into her books. This book, part two of a four book series, is a perfect example. A boy in the year 2013 stumbles upon a dragon that comes out of the ocean. At the same time, a girl shows up with another dragon. They tell the boy he is destined to be by the water dragon's side and be his guide. They say they need to find the other 2 dragons. He resists at first, but comes to accept it and they embark on an adventure. These dragons created Earth and went to sleep, thinking they would wake up at worlds end. But they wake up too early because humans have strayed from natures call and are destroying Earth (with factories, pollution, etc.). I think that when all four dragons are united their powers will somehow save the world. I'll have to read the sequals.

Book Description
They were destined to meet, but were they destined to be together? Though her heart wanted something different, Nemu knew what had to be done. There was much more at stake than her own suffering or the life of one man. The encroaching Romans threatened many innocent lives. Watching the dark storm clouds gather over the mountains, she thought how odd it was that nature often reflected ones feelings. Would the sun ever appear for her again? She saw herself as a tree battered by the wind and sleet, her heart a frozen knot of roots being ripped out by the damaging winds. There was nothing she could do to escape. She would have to stay strong and hope the storm would lose its strength, leaving her heart intact and Ambiorix safe. Of Water and Dragons takes place on the mystical island of Britannia from the dark enchanted lochs of Scotland to the grand bathhouses of Roman Britain. The battle of Mons Graupius in AD 84 is one of the most profound battles in history when the Romans, though greatly outnumbered, defeat the Celtic tribes of ancient Scotland and furthered the expansion of the Roman Empire. Here, in this untamed land the Romans call Caledonia, lives Nemu (Nay-Moo), a half-human, half-water faery woman. Soon after the battle ends, she finds a wounded Roman soldier name Ambiorix. Despite her distrust of humans, she takes him in and heals his wounds. Though they are from different worlds, they are mysteriously drawn to each other, but unforeseen forces keep them apart until their worlds collide in a fury of fire, blood and darkness. Of Water and Dragons weaves together the Roman history and Celtic lore of ancient Britain to create an unforgettable story of love and sacrifice.

A poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and tragedy.......2005-12-10
Of Water and Dragons is a blend of historical fiction and fantasy. Set in the first century AD, when the expanding Roman empire swallowed up many civilizations and loomed over Celtic tribes of ancient Scotland. In the midst of an untamed land, a half-human, half-water faery woman Nemu encounters a wounded Roman soldier named Ambiorix. Despite her internal misgivings, she shelters him and heals his wounds. They are drawn together despite their roots in drastically different worlds, yet in a land awash with the fires and slaughter of conquest, is there any hope for them to be together? A poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and tragedy.

I really enjoyed this book and once started I did not put it down till the last page was read.
I have been reading fantasy for 27 years and I feel the author did a wonderful job of creating a interesting and exciting story and the character's are vivid and dynamic so it was easy to step into their world with one's imagination.
I am looking forward to book 2 of the series. Bring it on!
Great Book.......2005-05-25
Once I started reading this book, it was hard to put down. The Author pulls you into every scene with her life like descriptions. This is a great love story set in historic times.
A must read.

Worst pet care book I've ever read.......2004-07-05
I got this book along with receiving my new pair of green anoles and boy was I disappointed with the information! The title implies that this book is a "complete care guide", but that is far from the truth. There is no clear guidelines for exact temperatures, humidity or lighting. I was amazed at how they presented green anoles as a perfect "first pet" but then proceded to give little information for anything but an outdoor professional habitat inclosure. After reading this book I had no answers and only more puzzling questions.

Check out the section on Australian water dragons if you get this book. The photos are beautiful and the paper quality is great (glossy). Dick Bartlett is a good writer, having written not only several reptile manuals, but also many articles in Reptiles Magazine and the Vivarium. Please check out the Australian water dragons again. I have to find out where to get some because I want them...:-)

Brief and consise overview of dragon care.......2000-04-19
This book contains the 'basic'care and handling information necessary to take care of your water dragon, however, if you are interested in an in-depth look at these wonderous creatures, or more detailed information regarding their care and history, you may feel a little unsatisfied after this short read. It is accurate information, and does give you a 'general' (as the title states) idea of what it takes to care for a dragon.
