Book Description
An all-new anthology of stories featuring THE ORIGINAL VAMPIRE HUNTER.
Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of the most famous novels in history. Both Dracula and Van Helsing have become icons: the vampire and the vampire hunter. Yet while the character of Dracula has been endlessly examined, Van Helsing is arguably one of the most well-known yet least explored characters in literature.
Now, Van Helsing gets his due as the stellar masters of horror and fantasy contribute their own unique take on the original vampire hunter.
The tentative list of original stories featured in this unique anthology include such authors as:
Katherine Dunn
Christopher Golden
Elizabeth Hand
Brian Hodge
Nina Kiriki Hoffman
Graham Joyce
Kathe Koja
Tanith Lee
Gregory Maguire
Kristine Katherine Rusch
Steve Rasnic Tem & Melanie Tem
Thomas Tessier
F. Paul Wilson

A wide variety of takes on one mysterious man.......2005-11-05
When purchasing this book, I was interested to see so many different author's takes on one of the most elusive and interesting characters in vampire fiction. There is a wide range of takes on the character, with a great many centering around one of two women: either his insane wife (the vast majority) or Mina Harker (two or three). This son is also the focal point of quite a few, but by far my favorite story in the entire anthology is the first one, the Screaming by J.A. Knrath. It is a very delicious little tale and highly recommended.
A complete list of the stories follows-
*** The Screaming by J.A. Knrath *** Poison in the Darkness by Rita Oakes *** Infestation in the Walls by Thomas Tessier *** Anna Lee by Kathe Koja *** Venus and Mars by Christopher Golden *** The Power of Waking by Nina Kiriki Hoffman *** The Life Imprisoned by William D. Carl *** The Tomb of Fog and Flowers by C. Dean Anderson *** So Far From Us in All Ways by Chris Roberson *** Sideshow by Thomas F. Monteleone *** Hero Dust by Kristine Kathryn Rusch *** Remember Me by Tanith Lee *** A Letter From the Asylum by Kris Dikeman *** My Dear Madame Mina by Lois Tilton *** Ardelis by Sarah Kelderman *** Abraham's Boys by Joe Hill *** The Black Wallpaper by Kim Antieau *** Brushed in Blackest Silence by Brian Hodge *** Empty Morning by Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem *** Fantasy Room by Adam-Troy Castro *** Origin of Species by A.M. Dellamonica
Over all, the only thing I didn't like is that all the stories are about Van Helsing the man. No adventures, really, and so many of them focus on his wife and child, leaving other ground uncovered.
Still for fans of Dracula or anthology lovers, highly recommended.
Good read!.......2004-10-23
As with any collection of short stories, I liked some more than others. But it was a good collection with lots of variety & a great subject. I really enjoyed it.
A Clever Concept . . . well exceuted.......2004-07-01
ALmost all of the stories fell within the theme of the book. Very few were just standard vampire hunters, and some like Chris Golden's and Joe Hill's were very much outside the box. While more traditional than some of the others, the Monteleone story very much captured the turn of the century sense of wonder and other-worldly aspect of Van Helsing's mission--and had a GREAT twist at the end.
This is a fun book. Get it.
Excellent concept, and what an anthology ought to be!.......2004-04-25
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the stories in this intriguing book. What a pleasant surprise it should be to many readers to find an anthology like this these days, one that is NOT a shared world series based on a game or TV/Movie media tie-in. As such, this more "traditional" anthology might at first glance confuse some readers who are not used to having stories in an anthology sometimes contradict one another. But this is just the kind of anthology a great many readers should relish, presenting stories as it does with a variety of viewpoints from a variety of writers, each with a different take on the character created by Bram Stoker in DRACULA over one hundred years ago, Professor Abraham Van Helsing. For example, about all Stoker told us of Van Helsing's private life was that his wife was insane and his son dead. One of the stories in the anthology, "The Tomb of Fog and Flowers" by C. Dean Andersson, explores that theme and presents Van Helsing's first encounter with a supernatural force, but refreshingly, there are no Vampires and no Dracula present in Andersson's tale, which may surprise some who are aware of his "first person" Vampire novel, I AM DRACULA. Maybe someone will ask him to now do I AM VAN HELSING! However, other stories in this anthology do deal with events in Dracula, or with different kinds of Vampires. One even presents Van Helsing as a Vampire himself! All in all, I highly recommend this anthology. After all, the editor, Jeanne Cavelos, created and edited the excellent Abyss horror line at Dell Books a few years back, and anyone who read any of the Abyss novels should have a high regard for anything to which the Cavelos name is connected. In other words, I highly recommend this book!
A disappointment.......2004-04-21
While there are some standout stories (Thomas Tessier, Nina Hoffman, Joe Hill), there are also some clunkers. One author appears to think that "Van" is Van Helsing's first name, and many others appear to have little to do with Van Helsing other than having his name appended (a few don't even bother with that, and merely present generic vampire hunter stories).
Extremely uneven.
Book Description
Deep in the mountains of nineteenth-century Carpathia lies the mysterious and mythic land of Transylvania, a world where evil is ever-present, where danger rises as the sun sets, and where monsters such as Count Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's Monster take form and inhabit man's deepest nightmares -- terrifying legends who outlive generations, defying repeated attacks from the doomed brave souls that challenge them in their never-ending war upon the human race.
On order of a secret society, only a lone force of good stands against them -- the legendary monster hunter Van Helsing, a man revered by some and feared by many. In his ongoing battle to rid the earth of these fiendish beings, Van Helsing must now travel to Transylvania to bring down the lethally seductive, enigmatically powerful Count Dracula, and joins forces with the fearless Anna Valerious, a woman out to rid her family of a generations-old curse by defeating the vampire. But unknown to all, the immortal Dracula will stop at nothing to unleash his master plan of subverting human civilization and ruling over a world of havoc, fear, and darkness...

Super Reader.......2007-08-31
Movie novelisation, and Ryan certainly has revelled in some parts of the bad monsterness. "IT'S ALIIVVE..." etc., so he had fun with those parts. Some of the humour does come through, as well, but he is a little hampered by the source material not being so great. Still, not that bad a job otherwise.
One of the few good film novelizations.......2006-10-13
When I first heard about the movie i thought it would be very good. Then I heard about the novelization, i instantly wanted to read it. It took forever to find the book, and when i did, a great sigh of completion came over me. That night, I read the first half of the book.
The author brings the movie's scenes into a perfect translation. The additional parts that was cut from the film brought more depth to the story.
This is a great addition to any book collection.
PARTY ON, DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Technical errors make for pet peeve irritation........2005-04-07
Well, I'll have to agree with most people; the book was better than the movie over all. The storyline was far improved compared to the movie, but that's to be expected simply because it's a book.
My main dislike for the book came from some of the technical errors in the details and the writing of the book. Such as, I counted a few typos and being as this is a book based on the movie, the details should stick to the movie. Granted, I can understand if you want to change some details about the character for the purpose of extending the plot, but this was not the case. In the book there are small alterations that don't do anything for the story except to annoy and confuse the fans of the movie. An example of this would be that in the book, Dracula has a finger missing, however it's quite clear in the movie that he definately has all of his fingers.
I did however like some things about the book such as how the author wrote flashbacks which made you futher understand the complex feelings of the characters later in the story. The character development was definately improved compared to the movie as well as the character backround. I enjoyed how the characters of Victor Frankinstein and his "monster" were played out far more so in the book than in the movie as well.
Overall, I liked the book, but it could have been much better had all of the details and technical aspects lined up correctly.
Van Helsing an Action-Packed Vampire Hunt.......2005-04-01
van Helsing is the best book a vampire-hunter fan could read! I personally enjoyed every word of this book and I am extatic that such a book was published! If you love reading about vampires and the gallant people who hunt them then it is a requirement that you read this book!
The best book .......2005-03-24
dude:The book was better than the movie because i couldn't mentaly picture what was going on. the movie had more action but it still had alot of confusion in it. the book was awesome i would rate it 5 stars the movie i8 would rate 6 star.

Amusing and Charming .......2007-02-17
This book is not attempting to be the next War and Peace, in fact it's not even attempting to be a historical romance novel, all it's attempting is to give you a light hearted read, and it completely succeeds!
I picked this book up, amused by the premise, and found it to be very enjoyable. No it's not breaking any new roads into literature and no it's not really that exact on dates and such, but it's a book about VAMPIRES how historically accurate can it really be? I loved it! I couldn't wait to keep reading it. I found the jokes amusing and the situations full of comic relief, and it just fueled my passion for tall dark vampires.
Reluctant to read.......2006-12-07
This book reminded me of the Cheshire cat, it is laughing so hard at its own jokes that it disappears without a trace. Yes, this book is so taken up with its own exquisite humour that it is not funny, not even enjoyable.
The reluctant miss of the title, is Ethel Jane Van Helsing, who belongs to a certain family of vampire hunters.
Alas, the poor girl is not following in the family footsteps well, in a word - she's hopeless. Given a new chance to prove herself in nabbling the Earl of Wolverton, she lands herself in fresh pickles and prat falls. The tale follows a steady course, poking fun at both Regency and vampire tales.
It just doesn't work, despite hitting the occasional humorous mark. This is not simply due to the woeful historical inaccuracies with which it bristles.
No, a parody must actually be genuinely funny and not just telling you it's funny by hitting the reader over the head with gags and giggles.
It depends what you're in the mood for..........2006-07-14
If you want your historical romance books to be completely on target in the history department- I would not suggest this book to you. Some historical references are inaccurately made and made simply to add humor. If that's something that bothers you- stay away from the book. However, if you're more into the humor aspect and a play on popular culture, give the book a shot. For instance, one of the chapters is named "Waking Neil Devine" (a play on the movie Waking Ned Devine), which I found to be rather humorous. This isn't the type of book you would read to stimulate your mind, just a quick beach read. Personally, I enjoyed the novel for the paranormal aspects and was amused by the popular culture aspects. However, some popular culture references were unnecessary and, even I (one who doesn't pay to much attention to historical accuracy), think the author should have been a tad more selective in her choices. On the other hand, the heroine in the novel, after struggling with her own identity- as opposed to simply being a "Van Helsing" (sorry if I spelled that wrong)- finds her own inner strength.
In the end, if it's what you're looking for, this book is a fun, airy read.
a wonderful 2nd book.......2006-07-04
I love a book that makes me laugh. if you want a fun read this is it. and it gets quite romantic at the end, when he realizes how much he does love her.
goes for farce, falls short of good genre fiction.......2006-05-15
I read vampire novels (you can see my reviews of dozens of them). I read Regency romances (and have reviewed a few). So you'd think that something that purports to be about a Regency-ish vampire hunter would be right up my alley, right? Well, it would be, if it were well done. But I'm picky about "well-done." I insist on at least the basics of characterization and plot, and a bit of historical accuracy in my historical romances, and dialogue that's witty. This book fails on all those counts.
It falls most seriously short on historical accuracy and period atmosphere. Some of that is deliberate; the author is trying so hard to get in sly puns and allusions to 20th-21st century pop culture that she deliberately stretches the way the characters talk. But other anachronisms are accidental and annoying - references to going to Plan B if Plan A doesn't work; references to someone's ego (I notice that one in many historical romances; people seem to space over the fact that we didn't start using that terminology until Freud laid it out at the turn of the 20th century...) Incidentally, the book is allegedly set in 1828, which is technically post-Regency, but not yet Victorian. There's a reference to Dr. Jekyll, even though Stevenson didn't write "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" until 1885. And so on.
Some of the plot devices were so predictable as to be passe - our heroine is carrying a flask of brandy and a vial of holy water in the same pocket; of COURSE she's going to accidentally throw the brandy instead of the holy water. (Let's never mind how our heroine has a liquor flask in the pocket of a light muslin gown; let's never mind that gowns of the period did not have pockets as we know them...)
And many of the allusions to pop culture were not worth making - the version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," for example, was (a) stupid; (b) not very well done as to imitating meter and rhyme, and (c) totally pointless with regard to the plot.
There are also the usual typos, grammatical errors, and word misusages that one finds in all too many mass market paperbacks these days; publishers don't seem to employ copy editors any longer.
To give the book its due, it's not totally unreadable. For a few pages, the allusions to pop culture are fun; if they came at about 1 every 10 pages, instead of being smushed together in run-on fashion, it would be a very funny style. I suspect that someone who isn't a dedicated Regency reader would be far less annoyed by the anachronisms than I am, and might therefore enjoy the book more. And if your only previous exposure to vampire fiction has been recent work that's more or less romance - Betsy the Vampire Queen, for instance - and has not included the serious authors such as Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, then you probably wouldn't be as bothered by the haphazard treatment of vampire powers and weaknesses, or the mixing of vampire and other supernatural cultures, as I am. So, if all you're looking for is a light read, not holding out for an actual good Regency or intense vampire experience, then this might be acceptable.

Movie is better but this is still good.......2004-05-17
Van Helsing the junior novel is very good because of what it was based on. It switches around a couple of the scenes only because it's a junior novel. They took out Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because of that too. The Van Helsing book that isn't a junior novel is better and the movie is the best. I thought it was an excellent story.

In Van Helsing, Sommers infuses these screen legends with dimension, characterization and technological wonder in a way that honors their legacy and propels them into the next generation of cinema.

A Splendid Companion to "Van Helsing".......2004-08-31
There are a number of things that one could single out for complaint regarding Stephen Sommers' summer tribute to the classic Universal monster films, but one of its strengths is its rich art direction. For fans of this film the art direction, and how it came about, is well pictured and documented in "Van Helsing: The Making of the Thrilling Monster Movie." It is a fun compaion to the film and a tribute to Sommers' work in creating a visually stunning summer treat. Shortly, after the realease of the film, the "Salt Lake Tribune" complained that "Van Helsing" lacked "atmosphere." This was a bizarre comment given one of the most atmospheric treatments of this genre since the best of the Hammer films. Much of this is caught in "The Making of." The phenomenal sets and backdrops are well preserved here. The book also contains a full working screenplay which may not stand up to more literal scripts, but it works here and is again fun to have in print.
Sensational Photo Book.......2004-08-21
Van Helsing: The Making of the Legend is a gorgeous book full of beautiful scenes with glamorous vampires and adventurous monster hunters. It's too bad Dracula's brides were killed because I wanted to ask them where they shop. The only person without magnificent tresses is Frankenstein's monster, and he's so sympathetic I couldn't help but love him despite his monstrosity.
I had to laugh at this understatement from the writer/director on page 8 of the book, "There are no monsters in this movie, there are only people with very bad problems."
Richard Roxborough's Dracula stole the show with his seductive portrayal of evil's attempt to defy God (with predictable consequences), so I would have liked to see more of him in the book. However, Van Helsing: The Making of the Legend thoroughly documents the creation of the characters and filming of the stunning scenery. If you loved the movie I would highly recommend this book.
A highly recommended accompaniment to the new film.......2004-07-16
Also available in a hardcover edition (1557046298, $29.95), Van Helsing: The Making Of The Legend is a highly recommended accompaniment to the new film Universal starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, written and directed by Stephen Sommers, and produced by Stephen Sommers and Bob Ducsay. This marvelous work showcases more than 140 film stills, concept sketches, line drawings, set designs, monster make-up, and spectacular special effects. Of this original treatment of the character first made famous in Bram Stoker's 19th century novel Dracula, has been revised and revisited as a legendary monster hunter as a renegade outlaw confronted not only by Dracula and his three brides, but Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolf Man, and a legion of other icons drawn form the archive of classic Universal film studio monsters.
The art alone is worth it!.......2004-07-05
Despite the rather silly premise of the movie itself, I bought this book for the art alone. I am a fan of monster designs and I have to say that the creature designs on this book (the Hellbeast and Werewolf)are worth every penny of it. The costumes, sets, and creatures' transformation are magnificent. I have only one dislike about the look of the Frankenstein monster which seems to be lifted out of the Munsters. If you're into dark creatures and monsters, you'll like this book.
Loved the book, liked the movie.......2004-06-02
My husband and the nine-year-old boy in his heart really liked the movie. I like Hugh Jackman and I was mildly amused by the movie (never really scared thank goodness).
But this book is quite wonderful for people interested in films and how they come about. "Van Helsing" is a movie you have to respect for its production values, even if you aren't blown away by its monsterness. Tampering with the old images may just have made me a little unhappy.
The editor, Linda Sunshine, can be justly proud of making this material so very entertaining to a reader and a book person. And I shouldn't be surprised if the script gets a good work out at a lot of school plays for years to come.
Book Description
Professor Abraham Van Helsing was the fictional creation of Bram Stoker for his dark work of fantasy Dracula ...or was he?Fragments of a recently discovered journal suggest otherwise. For the first time, in his own words, the legendary vampire hunter tells his own story his background and early years his research in Rumania and the Mideast his medical work...and most importantly his discovery of perhaps the greatest threat to man's dominion on earth, vampires.Filled with data to inform, and tips to educate, the journal is more than a study of vampirism. It is also the story of a man's obsession with eradicating the world of its greatest scourge, a dark evil that claimed his wife in its thrall. Working with the textural fragments he inherited from his grandfather, Professor Allen Conrad Kupfer, has managed to piece together the story behind the story that did not begin and end with Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Abraham Van Helsing r2/p2 Dilabio.......2007-04-23
This book is weird none the less good. it's about a doctor,Van helsing, in Europe during the 1880's. He leads a normal life till he hears a session from Dr. Borescu about vampires. It immediately sparked an interest, and he is sucked into the horror of vampirism. During a visit to Dr. Borescu's house he experiences then witnesses the despair of vampires in action when his friend Dr. borescu is killed.
After that bad luck and vampires seem to follow him all the time. the epedemic is spreading through Europe. Even Van Helsing's wife was bitten then later died. He has to find a cure but that means going to the core.
Follow the story through his journal entries. This is recommended for people who like gore, action, and some sort of mystery. Warning:When someone gets infected they get beheaded, get their heart chopped up, and then get covered in garlic. This is to make sure they are dead. If blood or garlic makes you queasy, beware.

The Journal of Professor Abraham Van Helsing by Charlie P2-R2.......2007-04-21
The story goes like this: The first chapter teels how Professor Allen C. Kupfer found a Journal in his mother's attic. The author then states that in the book his grandfather, Daniel Kupfer, and himself wrote notes in it as they each read it. Then all the next chapters are the journal itself notes included.
The next few chapters talk about how Prof. Van Helsing listened to a speech about vampires announced by Dr.Borescu. They also talked about how Dr. Borescu invited Van Helsing to his house in Romania.
There were alot of run-ins with vampires in the book and ..... you will find out when you read the book.
I really liked this book(you can tell from my 5 stars). If you like a thriller packed with fright, mystery, interest, and educational stuff then this is the book for you.

Book Description
Nigerian Scam Artists bilk American, Canadian, Australian, European and Asian victims out of a reported FIFTEEN BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR! Their newest and most dangerous scam is Romance Scamming. Using dating sites as their weapon of choice, these scammers win the hearts of unsuspecting men and women (even promising and/or proposing marriage to them). Once they have won the hearts of these people, the scams begin. They first make direct appeals for money. Then they use other schemes to bilk their victims out of considerable amounts of money.
Cyber Love's Illusions is the story of the broken-hearted victims who have often lost everything in pursuit of love; the cold scammers who will do anything and say anything to win the hearts of the unsuspecting; and our "deep throat" connection who gives us an inside look into the Nigerian Cyber Cafes, the sweat shops, and the people who work them.
Learn how to identify the scammers, how readers can avoid losing their money to the scammers, and how to take action against the scammers. Cyber Love's Illusions is one of those few books that can really change the Internet.

Excellent Read.......2006-03-28
This is an excellent book, for anyone who is using an online dating site, chat room and any other online public group or forum. Online safety and awareness of these types of scams are vital in today's tech world we live in. I have purchased this book for myself and my teenage daughter in the hopes her friends and herself will not fall victim to these scams. This book is an easy read to understanding the history of 419 Nigerian Scams, and how these Romance Scams work. The stories are real, personal and truly heartbreaking on how these scams have touched many innocent people. I am amazed at the detailed information this book has to offer along with the resources to keep your friends and family safe from these online predators. Romance Scams.......2006-03-28
Excellent read, a must for everyone that utilizes online dating sites or chat rooms! The stories are true-life experiences from members of the Yahoo group Romancescams, complete with verification by our Nigerian "deep throat". This problem is more widespread than most people realize and this book does an outstanding job of describing the booming business of scamming, how much money is being lost to foreign scammers, how dangerous this "game" is and how certain dating sites are choosing to react. Definitely an educational tool...learn how to spot the scammers, learn the ins and outs of how they operate, learn where to go for help and what you can do to spread the word. You will truly be amazed! Moderator Rhonda http://groups.yahoo.com/group/romancescams/

The demon within you will thank you for buying this.......2007-08-13
Demons. The subject has always provoked fear into the human race while also begging to question our comfort levels in general. This is a great book that takes a less intense turn on such creatures. The art is fantastic, the text is easy to read and the imagination put into this book is just as noteworthy. One of my favorite fantasy "handbook" type books.
