Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-10-02

Not only is the author a great writer, but he possesses an insight that is rare in our day and age. I also liken this book to "A Step into Deliverance," by Toni Pugh. He deals skillfully and autobiographically about his struggle and victory over the spirit of Jezebel. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars material for mature christian.......2007-09-10

This is an excellent book on spiritual warfare as a mature christian desiring to go to next level in Christ.
It will give you insight into spiritual realm and also allow you to see where you are needing deliverance, what deception you are living in.
Lies are exposed in this book and awesome truth is revealed for the believer.
Knowledge applied = Wisdom You will get this in this book!

4 out of 5 stars Change of Pace from Traditional Christian Reading.......2007-08-25

I really liked the stark, in-your-face style. Too many Christian books seem vague, ambiguous, and isolated from the "real world". This was a great wake up call to the "real" spiritual war we're waging.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching.......2007-07-13

Clear, precise and indepth teaching on spiritual warfare. I have bought several copies for others and continue to reread this profound book to keep these truths in the forefront of my mind and daily Christian living.

5 out of 5 stars The Three Battlegrounds.......2007-07-08

This book is an EYE OPENER on spiritual warfare. I purchased three copies and am sharing it some of the members of my church. They all say they will be purchasing a copy of this amazing book for their own library. In Sister Jeannette's words, "This is a must have in my bookcase".

The author uses scripture to support each claim made in the book. A MUST HAVE for sure.

God Bless,
Vivian

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-29

This is a great arena book with work plans to help the rider plan lessons etc. easy to understand and well displayed for while you are riding in you arena. hang it up and you can refer to it with ease. Great way of planning you lessons and helpful ideas to extend your riding.

5 out of 5 stars Great horse exercise book .......2007-01-11

this is a great book for learning all the little things you need to know or for working on all those things you should know
what a great book awesome diagrams and simple explanations any one can use this book would be a great tool for instructors

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the Intermediate rider working at home........2006-07-13

This book is great for riders who can easily walk trot and lope/canter and depart on a correct lead.

This is somewhat of a "crossover" book--dressage and western with exercises that are great for horse and rider, but which my not be popular with di-hard dressage or western only trainers. The exercises would be difficult in many cases for the rider using a true forward seat hunt saddle unless the stirrups were legthened A LOT.

Very handy for a rider working at home without regular lessons.

2 out of 5 stars In an enlightened age, Cherry is still old school.......2005-02-10

Cherry Hill has come up with some neat little exercise books to offer you training ideas. But she has some outdated ideas on horse training. Compare the advice you get in her book "The Formative Years" with some of the more enlightened trainers published in the last 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to your equestrian library........2004-01-12

The number of excellent reviews for this book reflect the application to riders of all levels and disciplines. The most valuable aspect of this book is that it encourages the rider to formulate a plan for their schooling sessions and make a conscious decision not to do the same thing day in day out - something we are all guilty of on occasion. Make your schooling sessions more fun for you and your horse with this informative guide.

Book Description

The first edition of this book was the first text to be written on the Arena software, which is a very popular simulation modeling software. What makes this text the authoritative source on Arena is that it was written by the creators of Arena themselves.

The new third edition follows in the tradition of the successful first and second editions in its tutorial style (via a sequence of carefully crafted examples) and an accessible writing style. The updates include thorough coverage of the new version of the Arena software (Arena 7.01), enhanced support for Excel and Access, and updated examples to reflect the new version of software.

The CD-ROM that accompanies the book contains the Academic version of the Arena software. The software features new capabilities such as model documentation, enhanced plots, file reading and writing, printing and animation symbols.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Poorly Written.......2006-10-25

The book is way too wordy. Who has the time to read on and on to figure out even smallest of the issues like errors after running the compiler to execute the file. I do not know if there are alternatives. I did not have one as my prof highly recommended it for course proceedings. It is a stupid's giude explaining all abc's unnecessarily. This book is a absolute hassle for mini course takers in this subject or learner's on the fly.

1 out of 5 stars Tough to Read - literally.......2005-02-07

While this book does have some useful content from the couple chapters I have read, the material is overshadowed by a serious problem - this is almost not readable in the literal sense.

There is something about the small font size and presentation that makes reading the book tough on the eyes, even with a bright light. I read a lot and this is one of the worst presentations I have seen. The other students in the class who I talked with about this textbook also had the same comment. For a book that charges over $100, this is inexcusable.

Unless you want to wind up with a pair of glasses sooner than you think or get a stronger prescription than you have now, avoid this book.

3 out of 5 stars No Surprises.......2004-11-30

This book achieves its objective. I had not done simulations for years, and this book walks you through the process of learning Arena. It starts out simple--even without actual computer models, just a manual process. It moves through simple high-level, pre-coded models, and then adds complexity. All told, if you work your way through the book, you will understand Arena, a widely used programming language. Note, however, that the student version of the software in this book can only manipulate 15 entities. That's okay for learning, but for real production simulations to answer real questions, then you would need the professional version. That, of course, costs thousands of dollars. Your company would buy this. So, you see where I'm going: if you don't work in an environment that uses Area professionally, all the stuff you learned that is Arena-specific is, well, like memorizing baseball statistics. A nice hobby, but...

3 out of 5 stars This book is better than nothing........2004-10-11

Overall this is a good book, if a bit overpriced and wordy. Let me put it this way, I guess I really wouldn't want to be without this book. On the other hand, I found it frustrating to use when I needed quick answers, as these authors love getting right into the details. For example, when I wanted to add a conveyor to a process I was modeling, there wasn't a simple introduction at the beginning of the conveyer section to provide a quick, adequate overview. The book doesn't use effective formatting to help one quickly find specific things needed (i.e., Entities Entering Along Conveyor; Entity Proceeds if There is Space; Power and Free Conveyor; Synchronous Movement of Entities; Basic Accumulating; Basic Nonaccumulating; Processing on a Conveyor; Selecting Based on Inspection; Varying Entity Sizes on Accumulating; Failures for Conveyors; Two Merging to One; Choosing Alternate Conveyors; Merging Conveyors; Shrinking Parts on a Conveyor; etc.). Though I recommend this book, you may want to supplement it with another one (i.e., such as a "Dummy" type book) for those times when you need simple, fast answers.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book to get started.......2004-01-15

This is a nice book aimed at begineers with lot of nice examples.
The user can start modelling confidently after reading this book and is indispensable for the beginners.A novice can grasp the concepts easily but for an advance learner who is more intrested in integrating VB code less help is available. More emphasis should be laid on the advanced concepts and a short review of commands of SIMAN /CINEMA coupled with some examples would have made this bok truely exceptional.

4 out of 5 stars Closed Barn Doors.......2007-01-09

Growing up on a farm, I knew some of the information contained in this book. However, it did a great job of explaining why things are done to make a barn both practical and successful. My family and I had many ideas of how we were to design our barn, but reading this book has allowed us to avoid several of what we now recognize as design pitfalls. With good explanations of each aspect of equine facilities (i.e. necessary facilities, additional facilities, designing techniques, etc.) and great pictorial content, my family and I were able to choose the designs which were perfect for us and our farm.

The only complaint I have about this book is that it disagreed with my original plans... and I was so hurt that someone found a flaw within my perfect self.

A job well done.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect book!!!.......2006-11-01

This book should be ones first purchase. If it does not satisfy all questions then buy another book -but I doubt it will be necessary. I bought all the less expensive books first and wasted my money and valuable time....reading them. I eventually found this book...I wish I had bought ONLY this book. It is fantastic for architects, contractors and simpler folks wanting to design their own structure...anyone considering re-building or starting from scratch will find this is the book that will have saved you thousands of dollars and heartache and then some. No kidding, I second the opinion it is worth every penny. I bought a second copy as a gift for a friend.....I didn't dare loose my copy and besides the author really did deserve every penny for every copy sold on this lovely, lovely book.

5 out of 5 stars Actually worth the money !.......2006-07-05

I really hesitated before I bought this book. I thought "how good could this POSSIBLY be for $150.00." All of my doubts were erased once I opened the cover. I am planning to build a large indoor arena with stable. Every single one of my questions were answered thoroughly and clearly in this book. Beyond that hundreds of details I had never even considered were brought to light in Eileen Wheelers book.

The detail of construction was extensive and comprehensive. This book is defenitely the Bible of stable and Arena Design!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Comprehensive!.......2006-03-15

This book is worth every penny. Anyone wanting to build a great barn or arena should consider this book...especially appreciated the formulas and suggestions for figuring needs for heat, arena floor materials, lighting, etc. The author seemed to think of everything!

Book Description

This fourth edition of Simulation with Arena has the same goal as the first three editions: to provide a comprehensive treatment of simulation concepts in general and the Arena simulation software in particular. It starts by having the reader develop simple, well-animated, high-level models, and then progresses to advanced modeling and analysis. Statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments is integrated with the modeling chapters, reflecting the joint nature of these activities in good simulation studies. The objective is to help the reader carry out effective simulation modeling, analysis, and projects using the Arena simulation system. An informal, tutorial writing style is used to aid the beginner in fully understanding the ideas and topics presented. Included is a CD containing the current version of the Arena academic software and the examples referenced throughout the text.

Starting with an introduction to simulation concepts, the book progresses through an overview of the Arena software, basic model development, input analysis, additional modeling constructs, output analysis, and advanced modeling. It also includes chapters on integrating Arena simulation models with other applications, specialized statistical issues, continuous simulation, and conducting a successful simulation study. It is intended primarily to be a text in a first course on simulation or for self-study. However, the later chapters could be incorporated into an advanced or graduate-level course.

Building on the success of the first three editions, published in 1998, 2002, and 2004, this edition retains the basic outline and tutorial style, built around a sequence of successively more complicated examples. All the examples and discussion, however, have been modified and updated to be consistent with the current version of the Arena software, and additional examples have been developed, along with more exercises. As before, a password-protected website for instructors provides support in terms of downloadable lecture slides and solutions to end-of-chapter exercises.

The book draws heavily on the experience and expertise of the authors, a professor at the University of Cincinnati specializing in simulation, and two seasoned members of Rockwell Software (formerly Systems Modeling), the developers of Arena, who are active in product design and development, training, consulting, and applications.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A bit too messy.......2007-02-12

This book has been co-authored by a university professor and two Rockwell people. It neither serves its purpose as a "theory" book nor an "applied" book.
It leads you through the process of creating a simulation by using examples.
I would have preferred this to be more of a reference book answering questions such as "If I want to do this what modules should I use?". Instead, when faced with a minor question (e.g. how to count exiting entities with different attributes?) I end up reading half the book and still not find a suitable answer.
The occasionnal jokes are quite funny though!

    Book Description

After World War II the United States faced two preeminent challenges: how to administer its responsibilities abroad as the world's strongest power, and how to manage the rising movement at home for racial justice and civil rights. The effort to contain the growing influence of the Soviet Union resulted in the Cold War, a conflict that emphasized the American commitment to freedom. The absence of that freedom for nonwhite American citizens confronted the nation's leaders with an embarrassing contradiction.

Racial discrimination after 1945 was a foreign as well as a domestic problem. World War II opened the door to both the U.S. civil rights movement and the struggle of Asians and Africans abroad for independence from colonial rule. America's closest allies against the Soviet Union, however, were colonial powers whose interests had to be balanced against those of the emerging independent Third World in a multiracial, anticommunist alliance. At the same time, U.S. racial reform was essential to preserve the domestic consensus needed to sustain the Cold War struggle.

The Cold War and the Color Line is the first comprehensive examination of how the Cold War intersected with the final destruction of global white supremacy. Thomas Borstelmann pays close attention to the two Souths--Southern Africa and the American South--as the primary sites of white authority's last stand. He reveals America's efforts to contain the racial polarization that threatened to unravel the anticommunist western alliance. In so doing, he recasts the history of American race relations in its true international context, one that is meaningful and relevant for our own era of globalization.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Race Relations - A Global Perspective.......2007-04-12

"The Cold War and the Color Line" by Thomas Borstlemann was a textbook in one of my stepson's history classes at Southeastern Louisiana University. He thought I might enjoy it and I did. The focus is on the presidencies of Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson during the U.S. civil rights era. Borstlemann describes how America's practice of racial segregation (and support of European colonial powers, and the segregationist regime in South Africa) hampered it in the minds of third world countries as these mostly non-white countries chose between capitalist and democratic systems and the Communist model. An interesting observation of Bortlesmann's is that the presidents that did the most in support of civil rights for racial minorities were those who grew up in the South--Truman (Missouri) desegregated the military; Johnson (Texas) got the Voting Rights Act passed, and both Carter (Georgia) and Clinton (Arkansas) took a strong interest in the rights of both African-Americans and blacks in Africa. On the other hand, the presidents raised outside the South (Eisenhower in Kansas, Kennedy in Massachusetts, Nixon in California, Reagan in Illinois and Bush in Connecticut) viewed racial equality as a secondary issue at best, or in some cases even worked to reverse past gains. As a "50-something", I lived through most of this era (albeit in central New York state, not the deep South), and found Borstlemann's work to be very illuminating. Since I've lived in the south (South Carolina, Virginia and Louisiana) for the last 30 years, I appreciated the book from the "new South" perspective as well. Highly recommended to students of history and race relations.

4 out of 5 stars The Cold War and Race Relations out of their Vacuums.......2002-07-25

In The Cold War and the Color Line, Borstelmann evaluates how US domestic and international race relations shaped the Cold War and how the Cold war shaped the domestic and international race relations. From my studies, and I imagine the studies of the majority of average Americans, the civil rights movement, de-colonization, and the Cold War happened in individual vacuums - separate from each other, only linked by common abstract dates. Borstelmann shows these happenings are all highly connected - at times acting as catalysts for another. "There was no greater weakness for the United States in waging the Cold War than inequality and discrimination," Borstelmann asserts. The United States had to confront racial segregation and discrimination within its own borders as well as regimes around the world to develop a multiracial global coalition against Soviet Communism. The US had to inspire the newly de-colonized non-white nations to sway towards the "free world." But how was the US to inspire a world, the majority non-white when Jim Crow was still firmly implanted in American society? Borstelmann follows the developments of these issues through the Presidencies that were tempered by the Cold War. I found the book a pleasant surprise. The book went beyond what I expected - being the race situations during the Cold War. Borstelmann took his work beyond that to a living political environment - domestic and international as one - where de-colonization, the Cold war environment, and the Civil Rights movement were taken out of their individual vacuums and thrown into a perspective that understands the complexities of that no so long ago reality. I am positive that anyone interested in race relations will embrace this book. Also I believe for a complete perspective of the Cold War or for any interested in the momentous events that transpired in the 20th century, this well researched book will make an excellent read.

      4 out of 5 stars A decent chemistry book.......2006-03-29

If you are looking at a text book then it is one of those books which you can refer to during your high school days. But I felt that it could have been more elaborate which the description claims as no nonsense and direct approach. I think myself to be a dummy in chemistry so for a dummy embellishments and elaborations help. But the price is low and it helps.

5 out of 5 stars Thank heavens for a decent college chem book!.......2005-04-15

I got asked to teach chemistry very spur of the moment at our local community college. First class was a chemistry lab, for which I didn't need a chemistry book. Then two weeks later they asked me to take a chemistry class for nursing majors and handed me this absolutely awful textbook. Not only was it not well-written, the set-up for the chapters was screwy, and both the students and I found numerous mistakes in the problems and I found more on the CD-rom they gave me for testing. Geez...proofreaders needed badly!

I asked around the campus from the other chemistry professors and this book was the one most highly recommended. I could not ask the students to purchase a new book in the middle of the semester, but I can assure you I am using this book to double-check and back-up everything in the other chemistry book.

As a deaf person who is perfectly capable of teaching hearing students, and someone who has done a lot of research into learning per se...I find it a bit ludicrous that textbook writers don't seem to understand some very basic concepts. Number 1, it's been shown that deaf students do much better with visual input of any kind (not text, pictures, graphs, photos, etc.). It's also been found that hearing students do much better when given that same visual information, rather than merely lecture or text. Now why would that be any different for older students? My students in both classrooms prefer to have visual representations of what they are being taught. That's one great thing about this book...lots of great pictures. And what they don't have, I can certainly find on the Internet.

For example, the other textbook talked in text about nicotine. It wasn't very interesting. So I went and got more info about nicotine as a chemical off of the Internet, including very gross pictures of what nicotine does to the lungs. That certainly got the attention of these students who are going into nursing or other medical endeavors. I also told them about there being two types of receptors in neurons (my specialty); nicotinic and muscarinic, and explained what hitting the nicotinic receptors constantly with smoking or second-hand smoke would do.

The sciences do not exist in a vaccuum. Chemistry applies to almost all other sciences, and chemistry does not need to be boring. This book by Hein and Arena is certainly not boring, and a much better book than the one I was originally given. I have been asked back to teach again, and this will be the book I recommend.

As much as I appreciate the intent of their book, social workers have no place in the political process -- and, other than as citizens, they shouldn't. Social work is not a profession. Social workers have sold their souls to becomes second-rate psychotherapists. Their advocacy days are long over. Schools of social work pay lip service to social justice issues (in fact, social work organizations have not been able to define the word "justice," much to their collective embarrassment. Social workers should just get back to case management and leave the other work they attempt to lawyers, policy analysts, and well-educated psychologists. (Of course, I'm a Columbia U. Schl. of Social Wk. grad, the most unjust school imaginable, so I'm knowledgeable and bitter)
