Good Overview.......2004-07-28
Cheers to the author for coming up with the first world wide surf guide book. The book includes helpful info on forecasting, how waves are created, and of course worldwide wave hotspots. It will be interesting to see a second edition of it since there are mistakes in the book. For example, for some areas the charts for best time of year to surf are off, to mention one Puerto Rico's. Also breaks are referred to by the wrong name sometimes and even the by month temperatures seem off (i.e Californias). I was eager to buy the book but once I saw the mistakes I decided to wait for maybe a corrected second edition. I recommend to the author that he researches the "hot spots" a bit more carefully. Also just for the sake of adventure a section discussing the potential of discovery around the world would be interesting to see, say the potential around the South Pacific, or Africa for new waves to be discovered. The book may work as a good beginners guide to where the waves are, but for a specific surf trip a more descriptive and more accurate guide would be invaluable.
best guide to world spots.......2003-07-26
although its not as in depth as europe or NA stormrider guiders, The world stormrider guide part 1 gives you some valueble information including color maps, when to go . It even tells you the science of surfing, how swells and tides work. If you are curious about the spots that are around the world, i recommend you buy this book.

THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE AND INFORMATIVE GUIDE TO SURFING NORTH AMERICA .......2007-03-08
This is a must have book for beginning and experienced surfers alike. Basically everyone wants to know where and when to surf, and this book basically tells you exactly that and then some. I keep a copy in my car about a foot from my left arm at all times. It starts off by dedicating three pages to the formation of swell, storms, tides, and waves. Each chapter(Southern California has a detailed summary of surf culture, the seasons and hazards) which is fascinating. Each spot is identified with best tide, best wind, type of bottom, type of surfspot with a paragraph or so about what to expect. (Dangerous locals-Beware, Shark attack spot). This book could possibly save your life is you use it wisely. While this book doesn't cover in detail every spot in California, you will have to get a guide to California surf spots, it does an excellent job of covering the entire North American continent from Washington state, to Texas, Nova Scotia to Florida. Most well known spots are in this book, secret spots no. Hundreds of great full color photos of some epic waves. Buy this book and then start driving. Or better yet, just memorize the whole thing.

1st and only comprehensive guide to surfing North America.......2002-09-06
This book explains how waves are formed, provides information on forecasting surf conditions, and provides insider information into surf culture. It will help beginners get a clue on how things work in the water and provide those of us with experience the ability to travel outside of familiar territory to explore new spots. Ideal conditions are listed for every break in North America: ideal swell direction, wind direction, swell size, type of break (beach, reef, river mouth, point break, etc), and more.
A must have for surfers.

This is a great guide with specific details and great photos would reccomend to anyone.
Useful, but could be better.......2004-11-13
The first 'World Stormrider Guide' (Volume 1) to world surf spots was a little bit better than this one, primarily because both the pictures and quality of the surf breaks listed were consistently better.
In this edition, it seems some surf spots are listed to sell copies based on population, rather than surf quality (eg Texas, Perth-except Rottnest Island), or because of tourism (eg Venezuela -"waves are always small"), or because that is where the compilers thought they would like to have a holiday to research the information. And this leads to the second problem-some of the pictures are not up to the standard of a surf publication-many look like they were taken on a single day-stop on a surf trip, which were obviously not even close to the better days of surf at the spot. (Crumbling 2 foot beach breaks do not exactly make a publication). Everyone knows surf pictures are usually exceptional for a particular spot, but at least they know how good it can get.
The detail is as good or better than the first (ie water temperature, swell size, consistency, wind, costs, local stuff, spots highlighted in bold), but the pictures could definitely have been outsourced a bit more. (Hell, I've got better pictures on some spots on some of these-Lennox Head for example is rated as "one of the best right hand points in Australia" (in the top ten or so, along with the likes of Angourie, Burleigh, Kirra, Snapper, National Park Noosa, Winkipop, Bells, North Point, Mays)-yet the picture shows dribbly 3-4 footers-I've got pics which are better). And also, it isn't much value listing so MANY places which are at best average, or too inconsistent (eg like a number in the Carribean-obviously for the American market, the Seychelles-"very small", Northwest Phillippines and Vietnam-"always small"). A few average spots is ok, (or a really good spot but which is inconsistent), but there is too many spots which basically show you that it isn't worth going there (at least to surf, that is). Who wants to travel around the world to surf expensive 2 foot dribblers? (I can get that on an average day in Sydney). Quality, cheap, and uncrowded is what everyone wants-as well as the all-important consistency-ie often breaking!.(Hell, I know some spots in Australia that get absolutely epic, but only a couples of times a year!). In this respect a little more attention could be paid to details on consistency in general-it gives swell consistency/month, but a bit more detail here could be useful-something like actual number of good surf days/each month etc.
Particularly inviting were places like New Zealand (the place in general just gets better the more you look at it-like the first place shown after the inside cover-Mangamaunu Point-looks good), Peru/Lima area, Baja California (with the `seven sisters' stretch of pointbreaks), the `epic' Kumari Point in the Andamans (we'll have to their word for it, the pics look good, but not excellent), Rapa Nui, mainland Sumatra, Philip Island (I've seen better pics), Byron Bay (I've got better pics), Garden Route South Africa (poor quality pics, but there are some good waves on this coast), and the whole pacific side of Central America. Numerous other places like Madagascar, various Pacific Islands, Oman, Brazil, Venezeula, northwest Philippines, Vietnam, northern Spain, Angola, etc didn't exactly overwhelm with quality shots.
A final issue is that always difficult one, the "secret spot". I am one of those people who think the surf is for everyone, and you may as well show on the map where the spot or picture shown actually is. There are several spots described, some with pictures, but which are not shown on the accompanying maps (eg the Philippine Dream-pic looks good anyway, and "Secret Spot" South Africa). (They also say in Volume 1 that they are keeping some spots secret). There is also the annoying occasional picture which has no reference to where it is at all. Some people might like surfers to drive past `their' world-class spot, but it is pretty frustrating to go half way round the world, spend hard earned money, get home and find out you missed the best spot, and you can't go back. And there is always the paradox that others (eg businesses) might want the spot known. Who benefits from the secret? Not you, me or the local businesses-a small group of local surfers only. Also, the world is a big place, and more world-class spots might thin things out a bit, and moreover eventually they are going to find out anyway.
Hopefully the third edition will have some better pictures/surf spots- there are plenty around.

Download Description
Centuries ago, Connavar's triumphant battles against the invading army of Stone gained the Rigante their freedom, yet magic that once flourished has been all but snuffed out. The Varlish king and his barons have stolen Rigante lands and robbed the people of their culture and liberty. From the Rigante's former seat of power the black-hearted Moidart rules; only in the north are the clansmen free. There, in the Druagh mountains, the magic still reigns, strengthened by bold, brilliant victories of the outlaw leader known as Ravenheart.
One glorious spark, one moment of Rigante rebellion, has ignited a revolution and forged a legend. The conquered clans set about to rediscover their greatness -- yet theirs is not the only call to arms. In the south, civil war has drenched the land in blood, and the armies of destruction have begun creeping north. There the brooding Ravenheart waits, knowing the forces of the hated Moidart will come, led by the brutal ruler's only son, Stormrider.
Ravenheart and Stormrider: enemies of uncommon courage, are unaware that the fate of the world lies in their hands. Faced with this inexorable advance, deadly foes will be forced to unite, and a secret lost in the uncharted past will return to haunt these two warriors as they face the vengeance of an ancient evil. Immense armies of darkness advance on the highlanders, and it seems as if nothing will stop them. They crush their enemies with ease, until only a few thousand men stand before them, with no help in sight.
But these are not ordinary men they face. They are clansmen, and more than that, they are Rigante.
Spellbinding action and breathless adventure -- these are the realms of David Gemmell. His mythic characters represent the ultimates in good and evil, and everything in between. Brilliant warriors, they are heartbreakingly human in their ability to love, sacrifice, and summon extraordinary courage when all seems lost. With Stormrider, Gemmell continues his spectacular Rigante saga as the imperiled highland clan faces its deadliest threat... and calls for it's greatest hero.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best of Gemmells work.......2007-04-24
As a matter of fact the worst of it. Compared to Ravenheart the book is an utter disapoinment. It is the book Gemmell had to write because Ravenheart was just so damned good. The whole thing drags on through. I had a hard time getting attached to any of the characters with the exception of the Moidart. That's right the unspeakable villian from Ravenheart is the most likeable character in this book believe it or not. He was the only character that I found myself chuckling at whenever his point of view would come up. The end is OK at best. All in all you can't stop yourself from reading it just because Ravenheart was so good but be prepared to just sit down and get through it. Besides bringing closure to the series it won't do much else for you.
Solid book, but not breaking any new ground.......2007-04-05
This is the last (4th) book in Gemmel's Rigante series. It is also the fourth Gemmel book that I have read. It sticks pretty much to his style and delivers the same emotions and action that his others do. I was not bored by any means, but it was also not a stand-out work.
It's hard to find anything bad to say about the book. If you're looking for a light read while laying around the house, then pick this one up from the library.
I'm sorry, but it is actually a boring book........2007-01-10
This is the 4th book I've read by Gemmel and the first three were amongst the most rip-roaring heoric fantasy I've ever read.
This one was too slow, too convoluted and had too many different story threads with wildly unrelated characters to easily keep track of what was going on. Based on my past experiences with Gemmel, I expected something much crisper. The writing and characterisation are still great, but the plot and size and pace are deader than a really dead thing that's been killed, twice.
A Great Conclusion to the Rigante Series..........2006-03-13
David Gemmell, in Stormrider, has written another fun piece of fantasy and concluded the Rigante series quite nicely. It is packed with action, intrigue, and magic. I can't stop reading Gemmell's books and hope that he will write forever.
Kaelin has found the love of his life and fought for her, and the Rigante, to live free from the rule of the Varlish. But there is another evil lurking in the land and stealing the magic from it. Will the Rigante have to unite with the one person they hate in order to rid the lands of this new evil?
Gaise Macon has been training to become a leader in the Varlish military, but he always has to watch his back from people he thinks are on his side. He will make many tough decisions but their will be one that could lead to the death of many or the salvation of the Rigante.
Both the Drenai and the Rigante series by David Gemmell are excellent. Every novel stands on its own, but they come together to create some great reading. The Rigante series finishes with interestingly and leaves the reader satisfied but at the same time wanting more. Keep writing David Gemmell and I and everyone else will keep reading. Everyone enjoy the last book of the Rigante series!
Sorry, Mr. Gemmell, but We've Come To Expect Better From You.......2005-02-16
The Ravenheart, or Kaelin Ring, rides toward the conclusion of his destiny in STORMRIDER, Gemmell's sequel to his RAVENHEART. The whirlwind of Rigante revolution and independence widen as they carve a niche of freedom for themselves in the loosely held northern lands of Lord Moidart's rule. More troubles are on the way to the lands of Rigante heritage, however. The Varlish Empire itself churns with internal turmoil as the ancient, though newly awakened dark powers of the Knights of Sacrifice drive daggers into the very head of the Varlish Empire before turning malicious eyes to the northern lands of the Moidart and the Rigante.
Soon, if Lord Moidart and Gaise Macon, the Stormrider, would seek to protect their lands and life from the subverted Varlish Knights of Sacrifice and their allies, they must seek out unlikely allies among the Rigante themselves. If the Rigante and their land are to survive, Kaelin Ring must seek out his own destiny and cast aside ancient enmities in order to accept his new allies in a battle against a power older than time, a power that hates the Rigante more than even Kaelin Ring could hate the Varlish.
The action-based, heroic themes that fans of Gemmell have come to expect do not scan as well in this novel as they do in many of his other novels. The book seems to chop in a few places as the intertwined destinies of Ravenheart and the flip side to his coin, Stormrider, come to fruition. Those destinies also seem somewhat hackneyed and rushed as the book draws to a close. The self-sacrificing death scene in this book does not ring as true and heartfelt as that of Jaime Grymauch.
When all is said and done, STORMRIDER, while still a passable action fantasy, is not the phenomenal sequel I would have hoped for the beautifully heartrending tale found in RAVENHEART.

The Bible of Surfing Europe.......2001-03-10
This is the most awesome book on surfing Europe imaginable, covering all the best spots (and then some) from Scotland to Italy, from the Azores to Germany, and everywhere inbetween! Surf in Amsterdam? You betcha! It also includes Morocco. It is full of incredibly professional high-tech, accurate maps, pictures, write-ups, and gauges a variety of conditions for each spot- such as water temp, crowd factor, quality of wave, direction wave breaks, power of wave, ocean (break) bottom, what sort of rubber you'll need, etc. Since you'll notice that Amazon is often out of stock on this, or that it takes '3-5- weeks for delivery', I recommend surfing to Amazon.com's UK site (amazon.com.uk) and ordering directly from them in England- you'll pay a little more for shipping, but they usually have it in stock and you'll be sure to get your copy sooner. This is thee Surf Bible of Europe!
A Treasure Chest for the Travelling Surfer.......1999-12-14
This book proved to be a very valuable resource of valid and accurate information pertaining to surf spots I have visited last summer in Europe. I surfed northern denmark and germany, and even though these are not very common surf spots, the book had information about spots, and it was a great help. This book not only attempts to provide information on the surf-quality of the particular spot, it also gives a little bit of insight in the surf culture of the area and other information and tips that might not seen obvious at first glance but does prove to be very interesting and worth reading. Unlike atravel agent's brochure it is very unbiased and allows surfers to travel "their way". In Planning my surf trip to France nex summer, this book gave me a place for reference and also allowed me to "float" around in it, checking out this spot or another. The thousands of photographs give the spots a face, making the book not only informational but also very entertaining to read. It lets the reader dream of a perfect vacation and then proves a very valuable tool to realize that dream and turn it into a reality.
