Book Description

In the tradition of Alfred Sloan's MY YEARS WITH GENERAL MOTORS and Thomas J. Watson, Jr.'s, FATHER, SON, AND CO., this is the story of America's most innovative developer and luxury retailing pioneer Malcolm Gladwell has called him one of the unrecognized giants of modern retailing, but he is more widely known as the billionaire who went to jail for his role in a price fixing scandal. Clearly Al Taubman has had an extraordinary life. A dyslexic Jewish kid who grew up in Depression–era Detroit, Taubman made several fortunes in businesses as varied as architecture, land speculation, mall development, luxury housing, chain restaurants, and, of course, the fine art auction business. THRESHOLD RESISTANCE reveals the theme that has run through each of these endeavors. In this memoir, Taubman explains his distinctive point of view about what makes shoppers buy and how the needs and habits of individuals shape the retail environment.

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure.......2007-07-02

This is an incredible book! It was fascinating, heart wrenching and motivational all at the same time. The hard work and determination of Mr. Taubman is inspiring. His description of his trial and prison stay was unnerving. But to see the influence he has had on America is truly inspirational. Everyone in the retail industry should read this book to see what a difference we make. Thank you Mr. Taubman.

5 out of 5 stars The rest of the story...........2007-04-17

Having just finished reading A. Alfred Taubman's new book, "Threshold Resistance", I am thoroughly intrigued and amazed with this story. With his entire life focused on doing the right and best things for as many people as possible, how could it be that he ended up on the wrong side of the Government and spent time in our prison system? As with any situation where the primary information comes from new sources, internet, or just word of mouth, this book reminds me as a reader that there is a second side to every story. I felt the sincerity in every word written by Mr. Taubman and I can only wish that the entire jury had been able to hear the whole story before convicting him; I believe the course would have changed. However, his own words of "Faith, along with friends and family, can get you through the most difficult of life's tests" truly confirms that he left prison a far richer man than when he entered.

5 out of 5 stars Great lessons in life and business.......2007-04-16

I found this book to be remarkable. Taubman writes with humor and humility. I would suggest that this be required reading in business school classes in entrepreneurship and ethics. His story is one of a Shakespearean drama - his rise from depression era poverty, funding his education through the selling of shoes, to being a young architect boldly suggesting to an industry icon that through design a better sales and profits would result. Then starting his own firm with $5,000 to becoming a billionaire who brought creativity to the business of selling art, root beer and charitable giving. Then as in any great drama the betrayal of a trusted person (Dede Brooks CEO of Sotheby's) and the revelation of his untold side of the trial including prosecutorial misconduct and a judge with more than questionable judgment.
Al Taubman has had an extraordinary career with a story of determination and redemption that will serve well those interested in family business, marketing, functional design, the history of real estate development, trial strategy, charitable giving, art history and personal accomplishment. 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Billionaire Claims Innocence.......2007-04-13

Finally, we get "his" side of the story. In this excellent memoir, Taubman reflects on his successes in the shopping mall and real estate world. The details are fascinating and his entree into the world of high finance and the art world are entertaining...we learn that perhaps selling art is not at all like selling root beer. When he stood trail for the Sotheby's/Christie's price fixing scandal in 2001, he went against his better judgement and intuition, and listened to his lawyers. He never defended himself on the stand! Sounds like his got terrible advice from his high priced advisors. I was left with more answers, but a feeling of a missed opportunity on his part. Why did such an intelligent and clever man fail to speak up and tell his version of the truth when it was obviously called for? If we believe his side of the story, the true criminals are still out there in the public - it is a scary tale- a miscarriage of justice and real life tale of greed and deceit. Glad I got my hand on this book! The lesson learned is this....ALWAYS trust your intuition!

Book Description

Author, Bill Harris, takes you on a fascinating journey of discovery through the structure and workings of the human mind. He then presents irrefutable, hard scientific evidence of the powerful benefits of meditation and explains how and why the human brain reacts the way it does.

Bill cites research from a host of highly acclaimed scientists (including two Nobel Laureates), from respected institutions such as Harvard Medical School, Princeton, MIT, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, University of California Medical School, UCLA, The Menninger Foundation, Marie Curie Cancer Memorial Foundation Research Department, and more.

But, more importantly, he presents this valuable information in an easy to understand, easy to apply manner, which allows even the casual reader to benefit significantly from this important new book.

Proving the scientific benefits of deep meditation is just the beginning. Harris then shows readers how they don't have to invest years or decades practicing traditional meditation before they reap any significant benefits. He goes on to describe how anyone can use Holosync®, a proprietary audio technology developed by Centerpointe Research Institute (of which he is Director), to immediately achieve a deeper meditative state than is typically reached by masters of the traditional practice. This leads to a dramatic acceleration of mental, emotional, and spiritual change.

In Thresholds of the Mind you will learn...

The true science showing how and why meditation is the ultimate personal growth technique...

Why traditional meditation is such a slow process, and how you can get the benefits of decades of deep meditation in a fraction of the time...

The scientific principles governing mental, emotional, and spiritual change, and how you can use this information to greatly accelerate your growth...

Nine Principles which, if mastered, can change your life forever, leading to increased success, lasting happiness, and inner peace...

How to allow positive--without resistance and discomfort...

2 out of 5 stars Some valuable information which you can find anywhere else.......2007-06-29

If you're new to meditation there are some valuable ideas about what to do but he gathered them from other sources as well. But the worst thing about this book is which it's named after. The idea of reorganization of your mind at higher level after you are in chaos and overwhelm is so simplistic, and to a degree dangerous either.

There's a much more important variable while going through overwhelm. Overwhelm is caused by your mind which tries to restlessly escape from feeling the emotional pain. So if you continue to listen to his Holosync product while you're in overwhelm, it's gonna be so disturbing that your mind will finally shut down all the incoming pain with supressing neurochemicals, thus quit the healing and probably further repress it. So what you have to do during this situaiton is to stop giving more input to the brain, and as he says in this book, just watch the feelings and sensations in your body. Reorganization at higher levels while pushed by stimuli may happen, like developing your muscles by workout, but if you push yourself while you're in overwhelm it's gonna screw your brain even further. The real healing comes through becoming aware of every sensation in your body.

So if you're new to meditation there are some useful tips here. Other than that he just explains how his technology works. But I don't think it's worth your money.

4 out of 5 stars Watch Your Wallet.......2007-05-19

Bill Harris is a very, very bright guy. Thresholds of the Mind is an interesting book, and at times his insights are quite profound. BUT watch out for your wallet. The guy is a master salesman. First, there are the introductory Holosync meditation CDs which are relatively expensive compared to other CDs using the same technology. Then there are more levels of the meditation CDs for more $$. And then there are the online courses, the retreats, etc ... He's always looking for a way to take your money and without a doubt he does it in a very professional manner. Just be aware that there is a high level of commitment required to complete the Centerpointe program, and the total cost is quite expensive. My advice is to not get involved unless you are really, really sure you are willing to commit.

In my opinion Bill Harris is doing a service to all of us by providing an unusual and productive perspective on life, but I feel that it is very important that people understand that they should not enter into the financial commitment to the Centerpointe program without realizing that they also have to make a commitment of their own time to make the end result successful.

By the way, this is a positive review ... just think before spending your money. I think Holosync is great!

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2007-02-08

I too received it free with the Holosync program. Maybe you need to have started the program in order to understand exactly what the book is about. I have been doing the program for a short period of time, maybe two weeks. The book is awesome in the amount of clear information and coping strategies it provides for dealing with life's stresses. I usual would read a book this size in a couple of days, but I spent about ten days with this because I was trying to make sure I grasped every detail. The program and the book have already helped me greatly in just two weeks. Mr. Harris has an excellent program,Holosync, and the book is clear and concise. I find so many spiritual books to be filled with mumbo-jumbo. This one is not.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-01-05

Is very good book, ease reading, it covers all almost all information in correlation between brainwaves and states of consciousness. I recommend this book

1 out of 5 stars Trying SO HARD to get through this book.......2006-04-12

It's not that it's boring. It's that it's an advertisement.
I recieved this book as a freebee with the holosync prologue. It's got some nice information which is why it's so annoying that the author has to mention how great his program is and why you should get it just about every 5 sentances. I'm up to chapter 3 and I just can't take anymore. If you have the patience to read the constant commercial I guess it's a good book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Anyone Sexually Abused .......2007-10-03

This is an excellant book. This book walks you thru the journey of giving youself a voice about the abuse. This book has many stories to relate too and are in a heartfelt way. The title of "On The Threshold of Hope" really says it all. A must read for any sexual abuse survivor. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Subject.......2007-08-04

This is a painfully realistic portrayal of the pain of sexual abuse. She compassionately addresses all of the deep hurts of the women and men assaulted especially in child-hood by their abusers. She is frank, especially about addressing the fact that much time may be involved in the recovery of a sexual abuse victim. Excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars On The Threshold of Hope Review.......2007-07-05

I'm a survivor of 18 years of childhood sexual abuse. I've read several books about abuse trying to understand and make sense of it and to help find a way to live a normal life despite the past.

"On The Threshold of Hope" was the first book I've read that made me feel like there was hope of healing from the painful aftereffects of childhood abuse. I started feeling that maybe God didn't desert me during those years but that He cried with me and He hated what was happening to me just as much or more than I did.

I felt like the author had reached inside my soul and written all the words that I couldn't articulate. Even down to the experiences of others that were so close to mine. I've experienced flashbacks and nightmares for the past two years. Before that, I thought I had pretty much gotten over the past and life was going relatively well. Then at 48 years old, the flashbacks and nightmares started out of know where. The intensity and realness of these flashbacks and nightmares was terrifying.

This book explains all that I've experienced. It outlines and guides you down a path to help you get through the pain and start real healing. As the book states, healing is a process and can take time. I'm in the process of that healing now with a good therapist that understands the issues of childhood sexual abuse and supportive friends who are standing by me to grab my hand when I can't hold on.

Thank you for sharing this amazing book...it has truly helped give me hope for a life that can be full of wonderful memories and experiences.

I've purchased copies to put in our church library and shipped copies off to friends that have family that have gone through similar situations.

5 out of 5 stars A real encounter with hope/healing.......2007-06-29

I cant say that i have read every book out the on sexual abuse but have been through several. This book definitely will transform your life cos it did mine. I am really lost for the right words to use to describe this book. But in my healing journey i have been searching for a book that will help me through my short-comings or 'issues' as some might say, but most books i found were just a bunch of stories without much depth. just stuff to make you feel better about yourself or tell you it's not your fault or just some butter and cream recipe to give you an appearance of hapiness. Dr. Langberg books is quite different. Thank you for sharing your insight.

5 out of 5 stars Hope.......2007-05-13

Extremely helpful for those who have been abused or for those counseling the abused. The freedom found in Christ Jesus gives hope and guidance to both parties.

Book Description

A great international bestseller, the book in which, on the eve of the millennium, Pope John Paul II brings to an accessible level the profoundest theological concerns of our lives. He goes to the heart of his personal beliefs and speaks with passion about the existence of God; about the dignity of man; about pain, suffering, and evil; about eternal life and the meaning of salvation; about hope; about the relationship of Christianity to other faits and that of Catholicism to other branches of the Christian faith. With the humility and generosity of spirit for which he is known, John Paul II speaks directly and forthrightly to all people. His message: Be not afraid!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2007-07-20

A monumental work for humanity and Salvation. Pope John Paul II answers the questions of an Italian journalist with alacrity and succinctness. He carefully expresses his opinions that lifts the shadows off the Truth, revealing it with philosophical expertise.

The Holy Spirit was surely using Pope John Paul II to spread the message of Jesus Christ and answer many of the questions that Christians and secularists may have concerning God, life and religion.

A major work of Faith defining the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole. The Pope shows his superior intellect at work. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars God Bless JPII.......2007-01-10

I have to say that I had much inspiration from this book. Not because I like JPII (RIP), but because of the way he approached religion and society. Every person has his own way of looking at the world, and it is illuminating to read what the leader of the Catholic Church has to say.

1 out of 5 stars Shows the convictions of the former pope during his life time.......2007-01-09

Many people believe that the former pope stood for the Word of God. If you read the book and honestly compare it's content with what the Bible says, you will find, that this was not true. Otherwise the book is a waist of time and it will be better spend if you read the Bible itself.

5 out of 5 stars Theology Made Easy.......2007-01-07

In this book, John Paul II has made a great effort to answer as efficiently all the questions presented in the book. Many of the theological concepts are explained in a simple fashion so that the average Catholic can easily understand the meaning of his words. If one has a good chunk of questions relating to the Church then this book is definitely worth being sought out.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy!.......2006-01-23

I have these stories in two separate books. I read the first one then looked for a sequel in hopes that there was one. I was pleasantly surprised to find it and that Elizabeth and Rue have their own story and meet again for one last time. I have reread and reread these stories. They are good escapes especially with what I have had to deal with. Makes one want to go back somewhere in time also.

4 out of 5 stars Miller writes some of the best time travel fiction!.......2003-07-11

It was nice to pick up a book with two time travel novels bundled together. Both were quick, fun reads. I loved that they were both connected. She builds in a real sense of urgency concerning the necklace that sends people back and forth in time. There's plenty of excitement in these two novels.

4 out of 5 stars If you love Linda..........2003-04-18

I have yet to be dissappointed by anything Ms. Miller composes, and if you're thinking a reading this book, I certainly do recommend it. I found it extremely enjoyable and it's maybe the tenth or so novel of Ms. Miller's I've read. As always, I laughed at loud at parts, especially when Rue thought she could never love, let alone be attracted to a man named Farley, but...well, I'll leave that to you. I hope you enjoy it.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The story of Modern Art.......2007-04-12

The art of the last century viewed through the eyes of one of its best critics. This book is lavishly illustrated, very easy to read, an invaluable introduction to modern and contemporary art (that is, until the early 1990's). Hughes is one of those few critics who know how to admit they can sometimes be wrong (see his mea culpa on Philip Guston's late works), but who is almost always right.
The book itself is divided into chapters which do not necessarily follow a chronology but rather distinguish different themes such as "the mechanical paradise" (Cézanne, cubism, futurism), "the faces of power" (expressionism, Dada, art under Communism or Fascism), or "the landscape of pleasure" (Monet, Gauguin, Matisse, Louis, Noland), etc...up to "the future that was" with insights on contemporary art and the art market.
A book that has already become a classic, almost like Gombrich's "the Story of Art".

5 out of 5 stars The rise and fall of modernism.......2002-07-13

This is based on the script for a BBC program. To be a good TV program, it should have a clear and plain storyline which could fit into limited timetable. You can identify such a feature in the form of book, though substantially enlarged. The author did his best to make a clear impression of what was modernism in the visual art on reader (and audience). The author begin the book with what modernist artists perceived as ¡®the new¡¯ in their time. They thought they lived in thoroughly distinct time from the tradition. The new age demanded the new art. Modernism is the logical upshot of their zeitgeist. To understand it, we should pay attention to the interaction between artists and the time.
In this regard, Hughes organized the book not in time order or changing styles but with keywords which summarize the zeitgeist of modernists like machine, power, pleasure, utopia, freedom, popular culture, or future, to endow the reader with the tangible vision to see into the deep question of modernism.

      2 out of 5 stars Not For a Beginner.......2002-05-21

This book is very wordy, the author tends to use French and Italian phrases without translation. The book's cryptic explanations and definitions must be tediously read and re-read, since they do not appear to follow any pattern. Hughes is a pretentious attention seeker. 2 out of 5 stars Difficult reading........2001-10-03

I have read some past reviews on this book, and i am shocked to find that college students have been using this book for learning. I am currently in high school and my teacher is making us read this book. I find this book very hard to understand. If anyone has any information or quick summaries of this book i would appreciate it. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars More than an art book, by more than an art critic.......2000-11-09

I bought and read the first edition of this book after seeing the 1979 PBS series Hughes hosted, and I heartily recommend both book (which I still have) and the TV show if you can find it anywhere. Hughes' special brilliance is his ability to show the revolution in art at the turn of the 20th century as reacting to the revolution in technology and living standards and the rapid changes in every part of society -- the "shock" of this race to "newnesss" that really starting picking up speed a hundred years ago. Also unique and priceless is Hughes' puckish sense of humor and willingness to express an opinion - even a negative opinion - about art and architectural movements.

This is art history for the intelligent nonartist -- you will greatly enjoy it!

I found this book, by way of a quick perusal, to be easy to understand about the use of teeth in telling a horses age. The written contents were easy to comprehend, as opposed to vet books and others that I read through, the depictions clear and concise.

EXACTLY what the average horseperson wants in this type of book. We have an agistment property and are in the business of re-educating horses and selling horses, so this book is a must for us.

We have always used veterinary text, which is rather hard to follow for the layman.

      Book Description

At midlife, Mary Rose O'Reilley reflects on her past and her hard-won sense of self. She is determined, now, not to sacrifice or waste her self. She has struggled for years along the paths set by her suburban childhood, her Catholic upbringing, her failed marriage, and the mute duties of daughterhood. Now, she is trying to see the world through the eyes of the deer that stop outside her window and look in at her. As a wildlife rehabilitator, she feels a closer connection to the natural world as experienced by animals. As an apprentice potter, she sees in a Japanese tea bowl the ultimate balance of action and contemplation. As a Quaker, she can both sit still and sing. And as a writer, O'Reilley can speak clearly to readers at midlife who are expected to know it all, but don't.

      5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book...........2007-06-03

and I am only about 100 pages into it. I heard the author interviewed on NPR and decided impulsively to buy the book. It is incredibly written -- funny, wise, deep, reflecting. I am reading it slowly, savoring the stories, and trying to embrace the wisdom of "living the life that I am". I have a copy for my spiritual director...and plan to buy another for one of my dearest friends. For all of us who seek the One that embraces us in Love and Beauty, I recommend this book. Prepare to laugh...at the stories...at yourself...and then settle into the deepest regions of the heart to contemplate what God calls you to be.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, poignant, wise observations about a life.......2006-10-25

O'Reilly is an excellent writer whose work exhibits the rare combination of sharp observation and deep kindness. She is a seeker, not content with received wisdom or easy answers; her thinking is lively and precise. She also knows how to tell a good story -- and she's very funny.

      5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read!.......2006-08-05

What a fascinating book! I would highly recommend this read. O'Reilley's way with words is mesmerizing. Her book makes you stop and think about your own history, your own family with all its quirks. Her sense of humor and deep reflection on her life make this book a true pleasure to read.
