Book Description

The problem with new-style churches isn't just that they're ugly - they actually distort the Faith and lead Catholics away from Catholicism.

So argues Michael S. Rose in these eye-opening pages, which banish forever the notion that lovers of traditional-style churches are motivated simply by taste or nostalgia. In terms that non-architects can understand (and modern architects can't dismiss!), Rose shows that far more is at stake: modern churches actually violate the three natural laws of church architecture and lead Catholics to worship, quite simply, a false god.

Not content to limit himself to theory, Rose in Ugly as Sin takes you on a revealing tour through a traditional church and a modern church. He shows conclusively how the traditional church communicates the Faith, while the modern one simply doesn't. In the process, he'll give you a renewed understanding, love, and gratitude for the gift of faith that is your traditional church - plus a keener sense of just what's wrong with modern churches that look like anything but churches. Rose provides you with solid arguments (as easy to explain as they are hard to refute!) and practical tools that you can use to reverse the dangerous trend toward desacralized churches - and to make our churches once again into magnificent Houses of God!

5 out of 5 stars If ugly saves your soul, I may end up believing in universal ssalvation after all.......2007-01-30

Rose is simply excellent. Most modern churches look like the exact same buildings I go to for business conferences. Will my children dispatch their encounter with God and His sacraments with reverence when it looks just like where they will likely work during the week? Why get up and go to Mass at all?

Even a pagan would appreciate Rose's criticisms, for you could probably substitute the words "church" for "temple" and still have a comprehensible document. But Rose's chief criticism is what the goals of a Christian Church are and how architecture should assist and inspire towards those goals.

So what is going on today? Well, Church architecture is "Cr*p-tastic" as David Letterman would say. Fully polluted with Bauhaus, meaninglessness, abstraction, and the ever-present demonic zeitgeist of "in the spirit of Vatican II," we've got churches where we might as well be served hotdogs and snow cones. As a "Roamin' Catholic" because of business travel, I often look around for the "1/2 price" table from the GAP in most vestibules, given the architecture. Lord knows where they put the Lord, usually tucked away in a forgotten box in a side "chapel" which is (and I have *never* found an example to the contrary) even *more*hideous* than the church it self, if you can imagine such a thing were possible. Rose walks us through why this all happened, and it is sickening work to read.

Buy a copy for your Bishop today. And the next time the Diocese starts to raise money for a parish plant in some newly constructed suburb, be sure that you get the names of all involved and send this book as a gift before the first sketch.

5 out of 5 stars Another Outstanding Expose' By Rose.......2006-03-05

In this book, Rose tackles the continuing de-emphasis of Catholicism within the liberal ranks of the Catholic Church. With photographs, Rose cannot be challenged in his assertion that in the past four decades, liberal bishops and priests have deliberately constructed edifices devoid of inspiration. Take the example of Holy Spirit Church in Montgomery, Alabama, built in 2001...A horrendous example of precisely what Rose exposes. Here is another of those bare-bones stone science labs, astounding in its total absence of the aura of spiriuality, to which all Catholic church architecture should aspire. Small wonder, then, that in the Sanctuary of this albatross, there is no room for something as "bothersome" as the tabernacle holding the Blessed Sacrament, as space MUST be given over to the choir, so they can sit in mock-concelebratory position and sing their Methodist ditties. The heartening news is that this architectural madness is slowly dying of its own worthlessness. Rome, alarmed at these church designs, and with a keen eye toward all manner of abuses in the Church as it exists in America, has issued a growing number of texts regarding elements of church architecture and interior setting. A new generation of more orthodox priests, along with a growing number of parishioners who have tired of this silliness, have become more vocal and there are plans for new churches which return to the architecture designed to inspire, to enhance solemnity and to be treasured as truly Catholic. We didn't get in this overnight, and we won't get out of it overnight. But, with perserverance, we can ensure that future generations will have churches which are truly Catholic.

5 out of 5 stars A Signal Book - Very Important.......2006-02-03

This is an important book for a number of reasons:

1. It can be counted among that group of books that signaled that something has gone terribly wrong with the post-Vatican II renewal. In 2006 we (thankfully) are finally seeing true reform. The seminaries are being reformed, the priesthood is being cleaned up, our Catholic Universities are being called to return to their roots, we have a new catechism and the faithful are finally being taught the faith, and many of the new churches and shrines being built are eschewing the modernist trends of the last 50 years and returning to design that is timeless and a faithful representation of the Faith. Indeed, we are seeing more and more Churches being restored (as opposed to renovated)- a sign that the changes imposed during the 70's and 80's were theologically and aesthetically wrong. This book is important because it was possibly the first to tackle the issue head on and call a spade a spade . . . a sin a sin.

2. From this work, and others like it, a movement has emerged of Church architects to defend and advance the Tradition of architecture. An organization was launched called the Instituted for Sacred Architecture (www.sacredarchitecture.org) and it publishes a journal and highlights best practice and critiques poorly designed new church buildings. Another website grew out of the book: www.dellachiesa.com - which too is about traditional sacred architecture.

3. The word is getting out. The laity is no longer sitting back and doing what they are told by psudo-experts who toute themselves as authoritative interpreters of Vatican II and then dismantle the tabernacle, move the altar and form the pews in a circle around the "family meal". Thankfully, the lay person can now say STOP! And have the supporting evidence to defend what is beautiful and sacred.

We are beginning to see the emergence of what Dr. Paul Vitz, PhD called a "Transmodernist" movement which is marked by a transcending of the modernist doctrines (which the Church has declared heresy) and recovering an authentic experience (and theology) of the Sacred.

Mr. Rose's book is important because it has signaled the fall of the old regime and the restoration of the sacred in Architecture. This is an excellet book for learning why this happened and why it was wrong. It is a hopeful book because it points out the direction of where things are headed for the Church which is marked by the John Paul II Generation!

Thank you Mr. Rose.

PS: If you look at the negative Amazon reviews of this book, they claim Mr. Rose is biased. But if you look at their other reviews, you can quickly surmise who carries the bias. The reality is that a minority of people have invested their identity and professional ethos on the kinds of buildings Mr. Rose legitimately tears apart and exposes to the light of common sense. That is why you will read ugly posts that tear apart Mr. Rose and his book. If you can't win based on ideas, you have to attack the bearer of the ideas himself.

1 out of 5 stars Uglier than Sin.......2005-12-03

This book is, quite frankly, trash. Someone needs to read the Bible. Are the examples carefully chosen to show ugly buildings? Yes, of course. But the theology of architecture is both biased, and sinful. Zero stars?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-19

This is one of the best "reality" books I have read in long time. It was time that abuses in the American Catholic Church be published and explained, besides the media sensationalism. Now if the Vatican can clean house, that would probably make a lot of American Catholics return to the Church.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Book.......2007-09-10

This has been my favorite book since I first read it about two years ago. I love the characters in the book, and how well they were developed. I was unaware of this part of history, and what had happened to the Acadians prior to this book, and I think this book really helps one to understand how hard that time must have been for those people. I have read the other books in the series, and think all of them deserve 5 stars. These books are definitely keepers! To comment on other reviews that keep comparing this book to other Oke books, it is good to keep in mind that this book was co-written with T. Davis Bunn. T. Davis Bunn also has written a continuation of this series with his wife. The writing style is much different than Oke's other books...but I personally think this one shines above the rest!

4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading.......2006-06-10

This book was worth reading but there was one downside. The beginning was really slow and I had a hard time getting through it. I almost stopped reading. Once you get through the beginning, however, it is a REALLY good book and definitely worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Original Store Line.......2006-03-30

I would highly recommend this book because of the original story line. The story was unlike any other that I had read. When I came to the end I had to have the next book to see what happened, and of course, I wanted to read the remaining ones. Janette provided some very good lessons with having faith, and how to handle decision making in our life with the help of God. It's a five-star book in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars "The Meeting Place" by Janette Oke and T. Davis Bunn, 5 stars.......2006-01-02

I rated "The Meeting Place" with five stars because it was a really good book, it shows how two young women from two different cultures and religions were able to come together in times of war and still have a really special friendship. I like how they both happen to be at the meadow at the same time and how they felt such a close tie even though they were complete strangeres to each oher, how they both got married on the same day, and how thye had their first child only a few days apart from each other, amazingly enough. I think its so sweet how, near the middle of the book, they become such great friends that they think of each others as sisters that neither of them ever had. I think that it was really selfless of Catherine to be willing to risk her social life and not be near her baby for weeks just to help Louise's baby recover from her illness!
I loved the morals and life lessons in this book, like when they had to trust in the Lord to bring them back together after they were seperated and how Catherine, Andrew, Louise, and Henri all become strong Christians. I think it is amazing how, in their time of need, they can always depend on each other for support and encouragement. I love how the men are bound together in their own bond of friendship just because of the womens friendship with each other, even when Catherines husband is a military captain and they should be sworn enemys. I think this book is just amazing and strongly encourage you to read it, even if it is historically innacurate it's still excellent. I though it was really interesting and can't wait to read the sequel too.

Some other books that I would recommend are A Walk to Remember, The Love Comes Softly Series, and The Elsie Dinsmore Series. I am a person who loves to read and whenever I read a book I get so into it that its like I'm there while its happening.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful & user friendly!.......2004-02-09

My sister found this book years ago when she was looking for sites for her wedding. I used it to help find a location for my companies 25th anniversary party. I had to buy a newer version when I was scouting locations for my own wedding! If found wonderful places I never heard of before. It saved me a lot of time and energy by eliminating contacting places that would not have been a good fit.

5 out of 5 stars Every bride needs this book!!.......2004-02-04

My husband and I are not from the DC area, but have settled here. We knew we wanted a DC area wedding, knew we wanted it outdoor, but didn't know where to go from there. This book breaks down sites by how many guests it can accomodate, and lets you know prices, rules, etc. This saved me hours of phone calls and pointless drives to sites that wouldn't have been right for us. If you know the DC area, this might not be the right book for you, but for us carpetbaggers, it was a lifesaver!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for planning a wedding and other events!.......2001-11-30

I used an earlier edition, but I would assume they won't differ too much. This was an invaluable resource for our initial wedding planning. We were able to find out ahead of time and w/o phone calls that some sites we were interested in were too small to accomodate our guests. And, then we used it to investigate locations we had never thought of, or knew existed.

I have also used the book as a resource when planning social events for a non-profit association. Again, we narrowed our selections based on size and found locations that we did not know of.

My event planning went much more smoothly because of this book, and I have loaned it to several friends who have also praised its resources.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New Under the (D.C) Sun.......2001-04-04

When our two daughters recently became engaged, I ran out to buy this new Unique Places book, written by local author Elise Ford. For the price,(around $20 including shipping. For our weddings, each around 120 guests for sit-down dinner, I found this book not helpful. Locally distributed free publications have more information, more sites, similar information on costs, and are more a propos for planning weddings. This book would be useful for an organization, or for planners of galas or huge corporate functions. Most of the interesting locations do not allow private parties, especially weddings. A small percentage of the locations would be suitable for 'small' parties of around 100. I will donate this book to a non-profit organization I belong to. Many sites are excellent for large non-profit gatherings. Other sites have their own food preparation on site so renter can't bring in one's own caterer. A few private clubs are included, but not enough. This book might be helpful to some people, but not to this family. I should have checked it out in the library first. Mea culpa! Fine for event planners... but not mothers of brides.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for GREAT party!.......2000-02-24

Absolutely wonderful reference book if you are looking for a place in the Washington, DC area to have a special party. Arranges different sites by size, area, type etc. Is very useful and convenient to use. Saves hours of phone calls!

Book Description

This book was written in response to the difficulties students have with the Course's Christian context and its emphasis on Jesus. It first discusses the principles of "A Course in Miracles," specifically focusing on the dynamics of the ego and the meaning of forgiveness. Next, the teachings of Christianity are presented in the light of these principles, with the person of Jesus also discussed in depth. Throughout, special attention is given to the application of the Course's principles to important areas in our lives such as injustice, anger, sickness, sexuality, and money.

5 out of 5 stars Peace at Last!.......2007-01-05

What a beautiful book. Mine is the sixth edition which means it is the latest update. Originally released in 1983 the book is clearly "timeless". As a fundamental Christian i became interested in Gnosticism. Then i was lead to ACIM. i took the Course. After reading "Love Does Not Condemn" (by the same author) i became aware of my desire to learn the "truths" of the Bible reinterpreted thru the use of the ACIM thought system. Wow! i am in awe. He covers the "ego" influences in the Bible and how they affected the prophets, disciples and apostles. Which is such a relief for me since the Bible for me is so contradictory to the point of frustration. i have never been disappointed with anything Dr. Wapnick has published. He remindes me of the "Christian's" version of the Apostle Paul. i enjoyed this book to the max!

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous book. Highly recommended........1999-10-12

The tradtional sacrificial model of Christianity where an angry God demands a pound of flesh (sacrifice of his beloved Jesus on the cross) before we are loved by and acceptable to Him at some deep level does not make any sense to me. Dr. Wapnicks explanation of Jesus' life and death based on A Course In Miracles is not only logical, it is beautiful. This view allows us to logically believe in a joyful, peacefilled, nonviolent Jesus and a God who never stops loving us. This book greatly changed my life. It started me on the path of wanting to love Jesus again and eliminating my fear of God and death.

The Companions brings the cast of the Dragonlance series together for their first adventure. Author Tina Daniell wrote the best-seller Dark Heart.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-07-03

I liked this book better than the other Dragonlance books (not written by Weis or Hickman). I felt more like it was a Dragonlance book, then someone trying to write a Dragonlance book. The plot was pretty good, if never overly exciting. Tas, however, made it worthwhile (as always). Overall, I would recommend this book to any Dragonlance fan.

5 out of 5 stars I love reading about my old friends!.......2005-07-26

Great storyline. I miss reading about the people I have come to know. Daniell brings it all back! Please write more! Thank you so much!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad...but not good.......2003-10-08

First off...I am in the process of reading sixty or so dragonlance novels so click on my name for reviews of previous books....i'm reading them in order...now to this book...the Companions...This book is an ok adventure...I don't like the new species added in prequels. There are also some timeline problems with Raistlin. It is a readable book, though. I would read it if you want to see the companions in an adventure, and it's right in the middle of the books I have read. Definately better than Huma and Elven nation trilogy...Three Stars...An ok read.

4 out of 5 stars Good book..yet rushed........2001-12-20

As i read this book, i was pulled into it like i am with most books. I couldnt really put it down, though it did have slow parts, and scenes that seemed to have been just cut from the final printing..maybe that is just me, but i felt that things should have been explained a lot better than they were. But it was altogether a good book, and i did enjoy reading it. The only thing that i didnt like about it, was that the climax of the book..that last 20 pages or so, seemed to go by to quickly, with major gaps in the storyline. Tina did a good job in writing the book, i would say that her only flaws were leaving out a little too much info here and there.. But i do recommend it to any dragonlance fan.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty disappointing!.......2001-10-05

It's almost like 2 people wrote this: a bad writer & a good one. Parts of it are explained very well & others are told rather than explained.

The outline of the story is great. The telling is not. Tina did well with Dark Heart but it seemed she was overwhelmed with too many characters in this one.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous book.......2000-06-03

This book is wonderful! I received it as a gift about a year ago and just rediscovered it. If you've ever been to England or have dreamed of going you should read this book. The author makes some very valid points about faith and living life that I had never thought about before. The chapters are short enough to read one every night before you go to bed (that's what I do). I would strongly encourage you to buy this book. It has been a true blessing to me.

5 out of 5 stars A reflective walk along an Cotswold path.......2000-02-18

This is an excellent for anyone who has ever dreamed on visiting the "not so beaten paths of England. In each nook and cranny, Mr. Smith not only describes the beauty of the surroundings, but also weaves a touching testimony of how God is in all things. Each chapter unfolds another thought provoking revelation of nature and of God.

    Book Description

Explores the idea of sacred ground (found in most cultures) and whether such sacredness is innate, or acquired over time through association with a particular event, person, tradition, or artwork. Thirty sites are profiled in color photos and essays. The sites are grouped in sections on monuments and landscapes that are considered holy because of their association with saints and spiritual teachers; burial places and shrines; structures built "to the glory of God"; and pilgrimage destinations. Includes maps and a gazetteer with information on visiting each site.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview and introduction........2000-06-30

John Lundquist has done some good work in the field of temple study and temple liturgy. This work, though well done, can best be seen as a good overview and introduction to temple liturgy and symbolism while not being boring. The included illustrations are well done.

Mr. Lundquist gives an overview of temple liturgy and thought through a variety of cultures and religions. He covers common areas of thought and symbolism (the Tree of Life, Living Water, the Celestial Mount and ascent, the axis mundi, etc.). A good, and short, overview and introduction to temple thought and history.

    Book Description

Prayer for the church is not a casual practice but communion between Christ and His body that is as intimate as communion between a husband and a wife. And for the church, corporate prayer is not an optional ritual but a commanded expectation. However, having an effective corporate experience of prayer-whether in a large congregational setting or a small group-depends on many factors. John Franklin highlights not only the theology behind powerful corporate prayer times but also the effective habits and practices of a praying church. Know why God especially requires corporate prayer.

Know what motivates God to move in power. God wants to reveal Himself to His people, to move them onto His agenda, and to minister to His people particularly through His people. A God-centered prayer format is central to having a "God experience" in the corporate church setting.

5 out of 5 stars Not your parents' prayer meeting.......2007-04-27

The Wednesday night prayer meeting used to be a regular fixture of many evangelical churches. Sadly, attendance at the prayer meeting has dropped drastically in recent decades. And I've noticed that when we do meet we often spend more time talking than praying.

John Franklin's book is a "how-to" for reinvigorating the church prayer meeting and making it an effective kingdom tool.

One of his most fundamental suggestions is to make sure the first part of every prayer meeting is devoted to kingdom issues. We have put this into practice in our church with great success.
